Resumo Objetivo Identificar os fatores clínico-funcionais associados ao risco de quedas, avaliado pelo Mini-BESTest, em idosos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2). Método Trata-se de um estudo transversal. Um total de 145 idosos com idade =60 anos foram avaliados por meio das variáveis sociodemográficas (sexo, faixa etária, estado civil, nível de educação e percepção geral da saúde, audição e visão) Mini-BESTest, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (GDS-15) e o teste Timed Up and Go (TUG) (dupla tarefa). Foi utilizado um modelo de regressão logística múltipla. Resultados O domínio de orientação sensorial apresentou a pontuação média mais elevada, seguido pelos domínios estabilidade na marcha, ajustes posturais antecipatórios e respostas posturais. Os fatores associados ao risco de quedas em idosos foram: percepção visual ruim/muito ruim OR 3.40 (1,50-7,72); presença de doenças respiratórias OR 8.00 (1,32-48,46); sensação de tontura OR 2.53 (1,10-5,80); e tempo do teste Timed Up and Go (TUG) (dupla tarefa) igual ou superior a 13,5 segundos OR 3.31 (1,03-10,64). Conclusão Os idosos deste estudo apresentaram um equilíbrio postural comprometido, principalmente no domínio das respostas posturais. O conhecimento dos fatores associados ao risco de quedas em idosos com DM2 permite uma orientação mais eficaz na avaliação, prevenção e intervenção, visando minimizar a ocorrência de quedas e preservar ou otimizar o equilíbrio postural. Abstract Objective Identify clinical-functional factors associated to the risk of falls, assessed by Mini-BESTest in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Method This cross-sectional study. A total of 145 older adults aged ≥60 years were evaluated through sociodemographic variables (sex, age group, married, education level, general health status hearing and vision), Mini-BESTest, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and dual-task Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) Multiple logistic regression model was used. Results The sensory orientation domain presented the highest average score, followed by the gait stability, anticipatory postural adjustments and postural responses domains. Factors associated to the risk of falls in older adults are: poor/very poor visual perception OR 3.40 (1.50-7.72); have respiratory diseases OR 8.00 (1.32-48.46); feeling dizzy OR 2.53 (1.10-5.80); and TUGT (dual task) time equal to or greater than 13.5 seconds OR 3.31 (1.03-10.64). Conclusion Older adults in this study presented impaired postural balance, mainly in the postural responses domain. The knowledge of the factors associated with the risk of falls in older adults with T2DM allows for better guidance in prevention, assessment and intervention, in order to minimize the occurrence of falls and maintain or optimize postural balance. Resumo Objetivo: determinar os fatores sociodemográficos e clínico-funcionais relacionados com o baixo nível de atividade física (BNAF) em idosos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) pré-frágeis e frágeis. Método: trata-se de estudo observacional, analítico, de caráter transversal. A amostra foi composta por idosos com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos e com diagnóstico clínico de DM2 atendidos no Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes (HUOL). Foram avaliados dados sociodemográficos e clínico-funcionais com os seguintes instrumentos: Timed Up and Go (TUG), Mini Exame do Estado Mental (MEEM), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) de 15 itens, Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física (IPAQ) e fenótipo de fragilidade. Foram utilizados os testes de Qui-quadrado e Mann Whitney para análise dos dados. Resultados: a amostra do estudo foi composta por 113 indivíduos classificados como pré-frágeis (52,2%) e frágeis (47,8%). O BNAF foi verificado em 79,6% da amostra. As variáveis que apresentaram diferença estatística significante com o BNAF foram: anos de escolaridade (p=0,02), participação social (p=0,005), insulinoterapia (p=0,02), dor em membros inferiores (p=0,03) e sintomas depressivos (p=0,04). Também, foram encontradas diferenças significantes entre o BNAF e idade (p=0,04) e anos de escolaridade (p=0,05). Conclusões: O BNAF está associado a alguns fatores sociodemográficos e clínico-funcionais, sendo alguns destes modificáveis e, identificá-los é relevante para elaboração de intervenções em saúde adequadas para prevenção e tratamento tanto do DM2 quanto da Síndrome da Fragilidade (SF).

Abstract Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical-functional factors related to low levels of physical activity in pre-frail and frail older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Method: an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was performed. The sample consisted of older adults aged 60 years or over with a clinical diagnosis of DM2 who were treated at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (or HUOL). Sociodemographic and clinical-functional data were evaluated with the following instruments: the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the frailty phenotype. The Chi-square and Mann Whitney tests were used for data analysis. Results: the study sample consisted of 113 individuals classified as pre-frail (52.2%) and frail (47.8%). Low levels of physical activity were verified in 79.6% of the sample. The most closely related variables that showed a statistically significant difference with low levels of physical activity were: years of schooling (p=0.02), social participation (p=0.005), insulin therapy (p=0.02), pain in the lower limbs (p=0.03) and depressive symptoms (p=0.04). Also, significant differences were found between low levels of physical activity and age (p=0.04) and years of schooling (p=0.05). Conclusions: Low levels of physical activity are associated with certain sociodemographic and clinical-functional factors, some of which are modifiable. Identifying these is important for the development of appropriate health interventions for the prevention and treatment of both DM2 and the Frailty Syndrome (FS).

Resumo Objetivo: Comparar os fatores clínico-funcionais entre os grupos relacionados ao perfil do fenótipo da síndrome da fragilidade (pré-frágil e frágil) em idosos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM 2). Método: Estudo descritivo, analítico, de caráter transversal, com abordagem quantitativa. Foram avaliados 113 idosos diabéticos de ambos os sexos em relação aos dados pessoais, sociodemográficos, clínico-funcionais, função mental, cognitiva e fenótipo de fragilidade. Foi utilizado o teste de qui-quadrado e um modelo de regressão logística. Resultados: A média etária foi 68,66±6,62 anos, maioria feminina (61,9%), analfabeto ou fundamental I incompleto (60,2%), pré-frágil (52,2%), sedentários (79,6%) e diagnosticados com DM2 há mais de 5 anos (58,3%). Houve associação significativa entre os grupos pré-frágil e frágil e escolaridade (p=0,004), participação social (p=0,004), percepção subjetiva da visão (p=0,004), hemoglobina glicada (p=0,036), dor em membros inferiores (p<0,001), quedas (p=0,012), sintomas depressivos (p=0,002) e mobilidade (p=0,004). O modelo de regressão logística apresentou acurácia de 93,6% e as variáveis significantes foram: escolaridade (p=0,039), dor em membros inferiores (p=0,025) e risco de quedas (p=0,033). Conclusão: Dentre todos os fatores relacionados com os grupos do fenótipo de fragilidade pré-frágil e frágil, escolaridade, dor em membros inferiores e mobilidade foram os que mais se relacionaram com a piora da síndrome e seu avançar.

Abstract Objective: To compare clinical-functional factors among groups in relation to the frailty syndrome (pre-frail and frail) phenotype profile in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM 2). Methods: A descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was performed. A total of 113 diabetic older adults of both sexes were evaluated in terms of their personal, socio-demographic, clinical-functional, mental, cognitive and fragility phenotype data. The Chi-square test and a logistic regression model were used. Results: The mean age was 68.66±6.62 years, and the sample was mostly female (61.9%), illiterate or with an incomplete primary education (60.2%), pre-frail (52.2%), sedentary (79.6%), and had been diagnosed with DM2 for more than 5 years (58.3%). There was a significant association between “pre-frail and frail” individuals and schooling (p=0.004), social participation (p=0.004), a subjective perception of vision (p=0.004), glycated hemoglobin (p=0.036), limb pain (p=0.012), depressive symptoms (p=0.002) and mobility (p=0.004). The logistic regression model showed an accuracy of 93.6% and the significant variables were education (p=0.039), pain in the lower limbs (p=0.025) and risk of falls (p=0.033). Conclusion: among all the factors related to the “pre-frail” and “frail” phenotype, schooling, pain in the lower limbs and mobility were most related to the worsening of the syndrome and its progress.

Resumo Objetivo: analisar os fatores biopsicossociais associados à queixa de tontura em idosos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2). Método: trata-se de estudo transversal, descritivo e com amostra selecionada por conveniência, realizado em um hospital universitário. Participaram indivíduos com idade igual ou maior a 60 anos diagnosticados com DM2. Os pacientes foram avaliados a partir de um inquérito multidimensional, contendo dados sociodemográficos, clínico-funcionais e psicológicos e cognitivos, além disso, utilizou-se os instrumentos: Mini-Mental State Exam, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) e Timed Up and Go Test para rastreio de deficit cognitivo e de sintomas depressivos e análise da mobilidade, respectivamente. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio dos testes qui-quadrado e Mann-Whitney. Resultados: a amostra consistiu em 157 pessoas idosas, destes 45,22% apresentaram queixa de tontura. Essa queixa apresentou associação estatisticamente significativa com as variáveis: sexo feminino, estado civil sem vida conjugal, baixa escolaridade, autopercepção negativa de saúde geral e da visão, queixa de dor em membros inferiores, medo de quedas, tendência a quedas, alteração cognitiva e sintomas psicológicos. Conclusão: o conhecimento dos fatores associados à queixa de tontura nas pessoas idosas com DM2 permite melhorar o direcionamento das intervenções de prevenção, avaliação e intervenção, de forma a minimizar as ocorrências de quedas, manter ou otimizar a capacidade funcional e habilidades cognitivas, proporcionando assim, melhora na qualidade de vida.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the biopsychosocial factors associated with complaints of dizziness in older adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study with a sample selected for convenience was performed in a university hospital. The participants were individuals aged 60 years or older diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Patients were assessed using a multidimensional survey, containing sociodemographic, clinical-functional, psycho-psychological and cognitive data. The Mini-Mental State Exam and the Short Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) were used to screen for cognitive deficits and depressive symptoms, respectively, and the Timed Up and Go Test was used to assess mobility. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The sample consisted of 157 older adults of whom 45.22% complained of dizziness. There was a statistically significant association between dizziness and the variables: female sex, being unmarried, a low level of education, a negative self-perception of general health and vision, complaints of pain in the lower limbs, a fear of falling, a tendency to fall, cognitive impairment and psychological symptoms. Conclusion: Knowledge of the factors associated with the complaint of dizziness in older adults with DM2 allows improved targeting of prevention, assessment and intervention actions, in order to minimize the occurrence of falls, maintain or optimize functional capacity and cognitive skills, and thus improve quality of life.

The aim of this work was to prepare hollow fiber membrane changing the composition of polyethersulfone, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and clay, through the phase inversion technique, evaluating the influence of these constituents on the viscosity and distinct morphologies. Flat membranes were produced and their contact angles were determined and showed difference when clay was added and/or PVP. For the hollow fiber membranes, the +addition of these constituents, PVP and/or clay in the solution, can change significantly the viscosity and effect the membrane formation. From the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, it was identified the influence on morphology with the compositional variation of each additive, with the PVP promoting shorter precipitation time, favoring the formation of pores of the “fingers” type and increasing the presence of macrovoids. The addition of clay favored the formation of spherical pores, reducing the presence of macropores.

Resumo Introdução: Uma consequência importante do envelhecimento das pessoas com DM 2 é a incapacidade física, particularmente a perda de mobilidade. Objetivo: Determinar os fatores sociodemográficos, clínico-funcionais e psico-cognitivos relacionados à redução da força de preensão palmar (FPP) em idosos com Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM 2) e verificar a relação entre FPP e fragilidade. Método: Trata-se de um estudo observacional, transversal, com 156 idosos de 60 anos ou mais, com diagnóstico de DM 2, masculino e feminino. Os sujeitos foram avaliados segundo dados sociodemográficos, clínicos, funcionais, psicocognitivos e de mobilidade funcional. A FPP foi avaliada por meio do Dinamômetro Manual. Foram realizados os testes de Mann-Whitney ou Kruskal-Wallis e Qui-quadrado. O nível de significância foi estabelecido em 5% (p < 0,05). Resultados: Houve relação significante entre FPP e as variáveis: carga de fragilidade (p < 0,001), sexo (p < 0,001), faixa etária (p = 0,04), estado civil (p = 0,004), atividade física (p = 0,06), número de patologias (p = 0,002), uso de insulinoterapia (p = 0,03), queixa de dor em membros inferiores (p < 0,001), queda no último ano (p = 0,004), medo de cair (p = 0,003), MMSE (p = 0,01), GDS (p = 0,008), fenótipo de fragilidade (p < 0,001). Conclusão: A FPP é reduzida em idosas com DM 2 sem vida conjugal, com cinco ou mais doenças diagnosticadas, com uso de insulinoterapia, não praticantes de atividade física regular, que se queixaram de dor nos membros inferiores, com história de duas ou mais quedas no último ano, medo de cair, com déficit cognitivo, que apresentava sintomas depressivos e eram frágeis

Abstract Introduction: An important consequence of the aging of people with DM2 is physical disability, particularly the loss of mobility. Objective: To determine sociodemographic, clinical-functional, and psycho-cognitive factors related to the reduction in hand grip strength (HGS) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and to verify the relationship between HGS and fragility. Method: This is an observational cross-sectional study with 156 elderly individuals aged 60 years and over, both male and female, diagnosed with DM2. The participants were assessed according to sociodemographic, clinical-functional, psycho-cognitive, and functional mobility data. HGS was evaluated using a manual dynamometer. The tests performed were: Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis, and Chi-square. The level of significance was set at 5% (p < 0.05). Results: A significant relationship was observed between HGS and each of the following: sex (p < 0.001), age range (p = 0.04), marital status (p = 0.004), physical activity (p = 0.06), number of conditions diagnosed (p = 0.002), use of insulin therapy (p = 0.03), complaint of pain in lower limb power (p < 0.001), falls in the last year (p = 0.004), fear of falling (p = 0.003), Mini-Mental State Examination (p = 0.01), Geriatric Depression Scale (p = 0.008), fragility phenotype (p < 0.001). Conclusion: HGS was reduced in elderly women with DM2, those who did not have a marital life had five or more diseases diagnosed with insulin therapy, did not engage in regular physical activity, complained of lower limb pain, had a history of two or more falls in the last year, had a fear of falling, had a cognitive deficit, had depressive symptoms, and were fragile.

Objetivo: Determinar los factores sociodemográficos, clínico-funcionales y psico-cognitivos relacionados a la reducción de la fuerza de asimiento palmar (FPP) en ancianos con Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM 2) e verificar la relación entre FPP y fragilidad. Método: Estudio observacional, transversal, con 156 ancianos de 60 años o más, con DM 2, masculino y femenino. Los sujetos fueron evaluados según datos sociodemográficos, clínicos, funcionales, psicocognitivos y de movilidad funcional. La FPP fue evaluada por medio del Dinamómetro Manual. Se realizaron las pruebas de Mann-Whitney o Kruskal-Wallis y Qui-cuadrado, p < 0,05. Resumo Introdução: Estima-se que a população idosa está associada a distúrbios do equilíbrio, limitação nas atividades e isolamento social. Objetivo: Avaliar o equilíbrio corporal de idosos longevos. Método: Estudo transversal, analítico, em idosos com idade igual ou superior a 80 anos, dos sexos masculino e feminino, avaliados clinicamente e através dos testes: Escala de Equilíbrio de Berg (EEB), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), teste Timed Up and Go (TUG) e Teste de Sentar-Levantar. Análises descritivas simples e os testes de Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis, pós teste de Dunn e coeficiente de alpha de Spearman < 0,05. Resultados: Houve associação significante entre BBS e as variáveis: medo de cair (p = 0,029), uso de dispositivo de auxílio à marcha (p = 0,001), atividade física (p < 0,001), episódio de AVC (p = 0,007), doenças musculoesqueléticas (p = 0,027) e dor (p = 0,045). Houve correlação significativa entre EEB e as variáveis, como idade (ρ = - 0,316, p < 0,001), número de doenças (ρ = -0,26663, p = 0,0062), número de quedas (ρ = -0,214, p = 0,0279), DGI (ρ = 0,713, p < 0,0001), Teste de Sentar-Levantar (ρ = -0,418, p < 0,001) e TUG (ρ = -0,658, p < 0,001). Conclusão: O equilíbrio corporal em idosos fica mais comprometido com a idade, maior número de doenças, mais quedas, pior desempenho da marcha, diminuição na força de membros inferiores e mobilidade, presença de AVC e as doenças do sistema musculoesquelético, queixa de dor, uso de dispositivo de auxílio à marcha, medo de cair e não realização de atividade física.

Abstract Introduction: It is estimated that the elderly life is related to disturbances of balance, freedom in activities and social isolation. Objective: Measures to balance the body in the long-lived elderly. Method: An analytical cross-sectional study was performed on patients aged 80 and over, male and female. Patients underwent clinical assessment and physical-medical tests: Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and sit to stand test. Conclusion: Body balance in the elderly gets more compromised with age, higher number of diseases, more falls, worse gait performance, decreased strength in the lower limb and mobility, stroke and musculoskeletal disorders, presence of complaints, use of marching support, fear of falling and not doing physical activity.

Resumen Introducción: Se estima que la población anciana está vinculada a alteraciones del equilibrio, limitaciones en las actividades y aislamiento social. Objetivo: Evaluar el equilibrio corporal de ancianos longevos. Método: Se realizó un estudio analítico en pacientes de 80 años o más, hombres y mujeres, que se sometieron a una evaluación clínica por medio de las pruebas: Escala de equilibrio de Berg (BBS), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test y la prueba de sentarse y levantar. Los análisis descriptivos individuales y la prueba de Mann-Whitney y Kruskal-Wallis, tras la prueba de Dunn y el coeficiente alfa de Spearman < 0,05. Resultados: Hubo una asociación significativa entre BBS y las siguientes variables: miedo a caerse (p = 0,029), uso de mecanismo de apoyo para la marcha (p = 0,001), actividad física (p < 0,001), episodio de accidente cerebrovascular (p = 0,007), enfermedades musculoesqueléticas (p = 0,027) y dolor (p = 0,045). Hubo correlaciones significativas entre BBS y las variables: edad (ρ = -0,316, p < 0,001), el número de enfermedades (ρ = -0,26663, p = 0,0062), el número de caídas (ρ = -0,214, p = 0,0279), DGI (ρ = 0,713, p < 0,0001), la prueba de sentarse y levantar (ρ = -0,418, p < 0,001), y TUG (ρ = -0,658, p < 0,001). Conclusión: El equilibrio corporal en los ancianos está más comprometido con la edad, mayor número de enfermedades, más caídas, peor rendimiento de la marcha, reducción de la fuerza de las extremidades inferiores y movilidad, presencia de accidentes cerebrovasculares y de trastornos musculoesqueléticos, quejas de dolor, uso de mecanismo de apoyo para la marcha, temor a caerse y no hacer actividad física.

Abstract Marine algae have been the focus of important studies over the past fifty years, with a considerable number of components important to chemists and taxonomists having been isolated and characterized. The scientific data available on Sargassum polyceratium are extremely limited. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of an ethanol extract of S. polyceratium and to isolate its components. Intraperitoneal treatment with ethanol extract of S. polyceratium reduced the number of acetic acid-induced writhes and the amount of time spent in paw-licking in the second phase of the formalin test. Ethanol extract of S. polyceratium also reduced the amount of time spent in paw-licking in the glutamate test; however, there was no difference in the reaction time in the hot plate test at any of the doses tested. The chemical components isolated from ethanol extract of S. polyceratium were identified using one- and two-dimensional spectroscopic methods such as infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The analytical results were also compared with data obtained in the literature. The following porphyrin derivatives were isolated from S. polyceratium: 132-hydroxy-(132-R)-pheophytin-a, 132-hydroxy-(132-S)-pheophytin-a, pheophytin-a, and the steroid fucosterol. The present results indicate that the ethanol extract of S. polyceratium has antinociceptive activity. In addition, four new substances were isolated from the species evaluated.
