Resume Cet article analyse la relation entre religion et tabagisme chez les fonctionnaires des campi universitaires de Rio de Janeiro et les participants à l’Étude Pró-Saúde des vagues 1 (1999, n=4030) et 4 (2012-13, n=2933) . Des questionnaires auto-administrés ont été utilisés; les associations transversales et longitudinales entre les variables indépendantes (religion) et dépendantes (fumeur/non-fumeur) ont été estimées via des rapports de cotes dans des modèles de régression logistique ajustés en fonction de l’âge, du sexe, de la race/couleur, de l’état matrimonial, de la fréquence religieuse et de l’éducation. Il a été identifié que les répondants évangéliques pentecôtistes, contrairement à ceux des religions afro-brésiliennes, étaient moins susceptibles de fumer et de commencer à consommer du tabac entre les deux vagues d’enquête. Resumen Este trabajo analiza la relación entre la religión y el uso del tabaco en funcionarios públicos de campus universitarios en Rio de Janeiro y participantes del Estudio Pró-Saúde en sus versiones 1 (1999, n=4030) y 4 (2012-13, n=2933). Abstract This study examines the relationship between religion and tobacco use among university civil servants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that participated in waves 1 (1999, n = 4030) and 4 (2012-13, n = 2933) of the Pro-Saúde Study. We employed self-administered questionnaires and logistic regression models to estimate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the independent (religion) and dependent (smoking/non-smoking) variables adjusted for age, sex, race/color, marital status, religious attendance, and schooling. Our results show that Pentecostal evangelical respondents, for example, were less likely to smoke and initiate tobacco use between the two survey waves than those of Afro-Brazilian religions. This study contributes to understanding the relationship between religion and health by including longitudinal data on the transition to smoking and its stopping. It also indicates the importance of investigating the topic in relation to other health habits and conditions. Abstract This study evaluated the median lethal concentration of silver nanoparticles and their effects in fish tambaqui Colossoma macropomum. Therefore, an acute toxicity assay was carried out in completely randomized design evaluating six different concentrations of silver nanoparticles on blood parameters of tambaqui. The silver nanoparticles were produced by chemical reduction with polyvinyl alcohol (AgNP-PVA). The lethal concentration 50% (LC50) was estimated using probit regression. The blood was collected, analyzed and the data were submitted to T-test (dying x surviving fish) and Tukey test (surviving fish). An increase in glucose, hematocrit, total plasma protein, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils as well as reduced MCV (mean corpuscular volume) in dying fish compared to surviving fish were observed. Survived fish exposed to 187.5 µg/L showed an increase in hematocrit, MCV, and MCH and a reduction in erythrocytes, total numbers of leukocyte, thrombocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil. The fish exposed to concentrations below 125 µg/L, had returned the blood parameter to baselines compared to control. The estimated LC50 was 165.09 µg/L and was classified as highly toxic for the fish tambaqui. Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the association between breastfeeding and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children and adolescents. Methods: this is a case-control study carried out in the north of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, which included 248 children and adolescents diagnosed with ASD (case group) and 886 children and adolescents without a diagnosis of ASD (control group).Interviews were conducted with the mothers of children and adolescents and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. For data analysis, a multiple logistic regression model was adopted. The magnitude of associations was estimated by the odds ratio (OR). Three multiple models were fitted: Model 1: presence or absence of breastfeeding; Model 2: duration of breastfeeding; Model 3: duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Resumo Objetivos: avaliar a associação entre aleitamento materno e Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) em crianças e adolescentes. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo caso-controle realizado no norte de Minas Gerais, Brasil, que incluiu 248 crianças e adolescentes com diagnóstico de TEA (grupo caso) e 886 crianças e adolescentes sem diagnóstico de TEA (grupo controle). Foram realizadas entrevistas com as mães das crianças e adolescentes e utilizado um questionário semiestruturado para coleta dos dados. Para análise dos dados foi adotado modelo de regressão logística múltipla. A magnitude das associações foi estimada pela Odds Ratio (OR). Abstract The main objective of this study was to optimize the fermentation process using Serratia sp. BR13816, a bacterial isolate from Amazonian soil, and to evaluate the formation of nanoemulsions. Submerged fermentation was carried out with different carbon and nitrogen sources. Based on the emulsification index and surface tension results, we selected a hydrophobic (corn oil) and a hydrophilic (glycerol) carbon source, and a nitrogen one (urea). For fermentation using corn oil/urea greater emulsification indexes and lower surface tensions were verified at pH 8, 25 °C, and 48 h, whereas for glycerol/urea-supplemented medium the best conditions were attained at pH 7, 30 °C, and 96 h. These pre-selected factors (pH, temperature, and time) were used in a central composite rotatable design (CCRD) for an additional fermentation optimization of the two carbon/nitrogen mediums, corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea. The two best nutritional systems based on corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea were selected using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The mathematical models using the response surface methodology showed adequate adjustment. The best run of the experimental design for corn oil/urea (6.00% /0.60%) and glycerol/urea (3.00% /1.40%) systems presented surface tension values of 35.70 mN/m and 37.10 mN/m, respectively. ABSTRACT Introduction: Heart transplantation is the gold standard for advanced heart failure treatment. This study examines the survival rates and risk factors for early mortality in adult heart transplant recipients at a Brazilian center. Methods: This retrospective cohort study involved 255 adult heart transplant patients from a single center in Brazil. Data were collected from medical records and databases including three defined periods (2012-2015, 2016-2019, and 2020-2022). Statistical analysis employed Kaplan-Meier survival curves, Cox proportional hazards analysis for 30-day mortality risk factors, and Log-rank tests. Results: The recipients were mostly male (74.9%), and the mean age was 46.6 years. Main causes of heart failure were idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (33.9%), Chagas cardiomyopathy (18%), and ischemic cardiomyopathy (14.3%). The study revealed an overall survival of 68.1% at one year, 58% at five years, and 40.8% at 10 years after heart transplantation. Survivalimproved significantly over time, combining the most recent periods (2016 to 2022) it was 73.2% in the first year and 63% in five years. The main risk factors for 30-day mortality were longer time on cardiopulmonary bypass, the initial period of transplants (2012 to 2015), older age of the donor, and nutritional status of the donor (overweight or obese). The main causes of death within 30 days post-transplant were infection and primary graft dysfunction. Conclusion: The survival analysis by period demonstrated that the increased surgical volume, coupled with the team’s experience and modifications to the immunosuppression protocol, contributed to the improved early and mid-term outcomes. Abstract The occurrence of fires can lead to accidents with high potential, and vertical fire compartmentation is a measure to reduce these incidents. Increasingly, computational numerical analyses play a crucial role in studying fire behavior for control and mitigation. The computational tool Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is one of the main programs aimed at numerically analyzing fire spread. By using the FDS program, this research aims to numerically analyze the effectiveness of using horizontal projection and the combination of horizontal and vertical projections simultaneously, as specified in the Technical Instruction of the Fire Department of the State of São Paulo in combating the propagation of external vertical fire to the facade. Temperature measurements on the compartment facade were used to compare temperatures on the upper floor with the autoignition of material values commonly found in facades. Abstract Studies on Brazil’s helminthological fauna began in the early 20th century, and since then several zoologists from different parts of the country have focused on parasitology. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of helminthological biodiversity in the Amazon region, especially in fish, which is essential for the Amazonian economy. This study aimed to inventory the platyhelminth fauna Cuniculus paca (paca). The viscera of 30 pacas were analyzed, and 60 specimens of platyhelminths were identified, including 52 cestodes and 8 trematodes. Cestodes belonging to the family Davaneidae, identified as Raillietina spp., with an occurrence of 26.67% (n = 8), mean abundance 1.83 and mean intensity of 6.5, were found in the small intestine. The trematodes found in the large intestine were identified as Stichorchis spp., with an occurrence of 6.6% (n = 2), mean abudance 0.32 and a mean intensity of four. To the genus Raillietina, we provide new insights into the helminth fauna of this game rodent in the Western Amazon. The discovery of a new site of occurrence for the genus Stichorchis highlights the gap in knowledge regarding the parasitic diversity of consumed animals in the extreme western Amazon region, emphasizing the need for more in-depth scientific investigations in this area. Resumo Os estudos sobre a fauna helmintológica do Brasil começaram no início do século 20 e, desde então, vários zoólogos de diversas partes do país têm se concentrado na parasitologia. Estudos recentes avançaram na compreensão da biodiversidade helmintológica na região amazônica, especialmente em peixes, essenciais para a economia amazônica. Este estudo teve como objetivo inventariar a fauna de platelmintos em Cuniculus paca (paca). Foram analisadas as vísceras de 30 pacas e identificados 60 espécimes de platelmintos, sendo 52 cestódeos e 8 trematódeos. Os cestódeos, pertencentes à família Davaneidae, foram identificados como Raillietina spp., com ocorrência de 26,67% (n = 8), abundância média de 1,83 e intensidade média de 6,5, encontrados no intestino delgado. Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the incidence and factors associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infantsdischarged from Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Methods: retrospective cohort study with premature infants discharged from the NICU. The sampling process was random, considering premature infants being followed up at a high-risk outpatient clinic registered in a NICU from 2014 to 2018. The collection was carried out from medical records and interviews with mothers or guardians, with information regarding complications during pregnancy, conditions of birth, care and morbidities in the NICU. BPD was measured for premature neonates using oxygen therapy for a period equal to or greater than 28 days or 36 weeks of corrected gestational age. After bivariate analyses, binary logistic regression analysis was followed. For the final model, a significance level of 5% (p<0.05) was defined, with registration of the respective Odds Ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Results: data from 293 preterm infants, predominantly male (55.6%) with gestational age from 32 to 36 weeks, were evaluated. BPD was recorded for 63 children (21.5%). The variables that remained statistically associated with BPD were: birth weight, gestational age and late sepsis. Conclusions: there was a high incidence of BPD. Resumo Objetivos: avaliar a incidência e fatores associados à displasia broncopulmonar (DBP) em egressos de Unidades de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal (UTIN). Métodos: estudo de coorte retrospectivo com prematuros egressos de UTIN. O processo amostral foi aleatório, considerando crianças em seguimento em ambulatório de alto risco com registro em UTIN no período de 2014 a 2018. A coleta foi realizada a partir de prontuários e entrevistas com as mães ou responsáveis, com informações referentes às intercorrências durante a gestação, condições de nascimento, cuidados e morbidades na UTIN. A DBP foi aferida para neonatos com utilização de oxigenioterapia por períodoigual ou superior a 28 dias ou 36 semanas de idade gestacional corrigida. Após análises bivariadas, seguiu-se análise de regressão logística binária. Para o modelo final definiu-se nível de significância de 5% (p<0,05), com registro das respectivas Odds Ratio e intervalos de confiança de 95%. ABSTRACT Brazil stands out as one of the largest mineral producers in the world. However, this economically important activity also causes significant damage to the environment. The disposal of mining waste in dams gained great repercussions after the disasters in Mariana, in 2015, and Brumadinho, in 2019, that the need to find a new use for these materials arose. The main objective of the research was to evaluate the addition of iron ore waste to materials used in the base and sub-base layers of road pavements. The results of the mechanical tests demonstrated that it is technically feasible to introduce iron ore waste into the soil-cement mixtures used in the base and sub-base layers. It was found that a minimum of 6% cement in soil-cement mixtures for the base layer, and 5% and 4% for the sub-base layer, are sufficient for the addition of waste. This indicates that waste can be an excellent alternative to reduce cement consumption. RESUMO O Brasil se destaca como um dos maiores produtores de minérios do mundo. No entanto, essa atividade tão importante economicamente também acarreta danos significativos ao meio ambiente. O problema da disposição dos rejeitos de mineração em barragens ganhou grande repercussão após os desastres em Mariana, em 2015, e Brumadinho, em 2019, que evidenciou a necessidade de encontrar um novo uso para esses materiais. A pesquisa teve como principal objetivo avaliar a adição de rejeitos de minério de ferro em materiais utilizados nas camadas de pavimentos rodoviários, na produção de solo-cimento. Os resultados dos ensaios mecânicos mostraram que é tecnicamente viável adicionar rejeito de minério de ferro nas misturas de solo-cimento, sendo que, para camada de base, foi encontrado o teor mínimo de 6% de cimento, e de 5% e 4% para a camada de sub-base. ABSTRACT Objective: Abdominal ultrasonography is widely used to evaluate suspected cases of appendicitis. Objective descriptions of the direct and indirect signs of appendicitis result in varied assessments of its likelihood. This study introduces the Appendix Imaging Reporting and Data System (APENDIC-RADS) to standardize the reporting of appendix ultrasound findings. Methods: This single-center retrospective study included consecutive patients of all ages who underwent abdominal ultrasonography for the investigation of acute appendicitis. The primary outcome was histopathological confirmation of acute appendicitis post-surgery. The imaging findings were classified into five categories: APENDIC-RADS 0, where the appendix cannot be visualized; APENDIC-RADS 1, indicating a normal appendix; APENDIC-RADS 2, describing an appendix that is likely normal but only partially visualized; APENDIC-RADS 3, appendicitis cannot be ruled out due to uncertain features and APENDIC-RADS 4, acute appendicitis. Results: A total of 747 patients were assessed for suspected acute appendicitis using ultrasonography. Of the diagnosed patients, 52% were male, primarily exhibiting symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting (60%), right iliac fossa pain (54%), and sudden decompression in the right iliac fossa (24%). Stratification into APENDIC-RADS categories revealed a significant variation in the incidence of acute appendicitis, with incidence rates of 4.5% for category 0 and 0.7%, 2.2%, 11.5%, and 93.5% for categories 1 to 4, respectively (p<0.001). The APENDIC-RADS showed excellent discriminative ability, evidenced by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.950 (95%CI=0.899-1). Abstract The aim of this study was to verify the biomodifying action of 6.5% grape seed extract solutions, with different pH, when applied on dentin collagen. Dentin bars (1.7 mm x 6.0 mm x 0.5 mm) were demineralized for 5 hours in 10% phosphoric acid, and distributed into the following groups: acid solution (pH=4.42); neutral (pH=6.96); alkaline (pH=11.92) and distilled water (pH=6.75). Three-point flexural test (n=10) and mass variation (n=10) were assessed at different periods (baseline, after biomodification, 7 and 14 days of remineralizing solution storage). For qualitative analysis, similar dentin bars were prepared and analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman Spectroscopy (FT-Raman) before and after 1 hour of immersion in biomodifying solution with different pH. Data were subjected to Shapiro-Wilk normality tests, followed by two-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey's post-test (p<0.05). Alkaline solution was effective in increasing the modulus of elasticity, showing a decrease after 7 days and subsequent stabilization after 14 days of storage. Acid solution group showed a greater increase in the modulus of elasticity immediately after biomodification, but it was not stable over storage. Regarding mass variation, only the acid solution showed an increase in mass after biomodification and 14 days of storage. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a ação biomodificadora de soluções de extrato de semente de uva a 6,5%, com diferentes pHs, quando aplicadas no colágeno dentinário. Barras de dentina (1,7 mm x 6 mm x0,5 mm) foram desmineralizadas por 5 horas em ácido fosfórico a 10% e distribuídas nos seguintes grupos: solução ácida (pH=4,42); neutra (pH=6,96); alcalina (pH=11,92) e água destilada (pH=6,75). O teste de flexão de três pontos (n=10) e a variação de massa (n=10) foram avaliados em diferentes períodos (baseline, após biomodificação, 7 e 14 dias de armazenamento em solução remineralizante). Para a análise qualitativa, barras de dentina similares foram preparadas e analisadas, antes e após 1 hora de imersão nas soluções de biomodificação, através dos testes de Espectroscopia de infravermelho por transformada de Fourier (FT-IR) e espectroscopia Raman (FT-Raman) . Abstract Despite being an important component of the freshwater ecosystems and an important factor controlling wild fish populations, Amazonian fish parasites have been poorly studied. Here, we analyzed the fauna of metazoan parasites from 10 detritivorous and omnivorous fish species from Amapá Lake in the western Amazon. Of 159 fish specimens examined, 73.6% were parasitized by one or more species of metazoan parasites. A total of 5,260 parasites (24 Monogenea, 14 Nematoda, 10 Digenea, 2 Acanthocephala, and 6 Crustacea) were identified. Aggregated dispersion pattern of parasites was observed. There was a predominance of endohelminth species that presented a similar pattern regarding the level of component communities (i.e., a low species number, low diversity and dominance of a single species, mainly the digeneans and nematodes in their larval stages). Five species of parasites presented correlation with the body size of the hosts. In the fish community, the presence of endoparasites in the larval and adult stages suggests that these are intermediate, paratenic and definitive hosts, reflecting their detritivorous or omnivorous feeding habits. Resumo Apesar de ser um importante componente dos ecossistemas de água doce e um importante fator controlador das populações naturais de peixes, os parasitos de peixes amazônicos ainda são pouco estudados. Foi analisada a fauna de parasitos metazoários em 10 espécies de peixes detritívoros e onívoros do Lago Amapá na Amazônia ocidental. Dos 159 espécimes de peixes examinados, 73,6% estavam parasitados por uma ou mais espécies de parasitos metazoários. Um total de 5.260 parasitos (24 Monogenea, 14 Nematoda, 10 Digenea, 2 Acanthocephala e 6 Crustacea) foram identificados. Houve um padrão de dispersão agregado de parasitos. Houve predominância de espécies de endohelmintos que apresentaram padrão semelhante quanto ao nível de comunidades componentes, ou seja, baixo número de espécies, baixa diversidade e dominância de uma única espécie, principalmente os digenéticos e nematoides em estágio larval. RESUMO O zinco é um micronutriente de importância essencial para o metabolismo vegetal, é estudado para diversas culturas de interesse econômico, porém sem evidências de estudo para a cultura do coqueiro. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a influência da fertilização com doses de zinco via foliar em mudas de coqueiro anão verde, por meio do estado nutricional, atributos de crescimento e trocas gasosas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, e os tratamentos foram constituídos por doses de zinco (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25 g por planta), com cinco repetições. As mudas foram influenciadas positivamente pelas doses de zinco principalmente nas variáveis de crescimento e nas trocas gasosas. No estado nutricional afetou de maneira decrescente o ferro e o manganês e aumentou o zinco no tecido foliar. O zinco proporcionou incrementos na área foliar, altura de plantas, massa seca da parte aérea e massa seca total. ABSTRACT Zinc is an essential micronutrient for plant metabolism and has been studied in several crops of economic interest. However, there is no evidence of its use in coconut crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of foliar zinc fertilization with doses of zinc on dwarf green coconut seedlings based on their nutritional status, growth attributes, and gas exchange. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, and the treatments consisted of different zinc doses (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g per plant) with five replicates. Seedlings were positively influenced by zinc dose, mainly in terms of growth variables and gas exchange. Zinc fertilization reduced iron and manganese content and increased zinc concentrations in the leaf tissue. ABSTRACT Oil palm production is strategic in the Amazon with high productive potential, but information on its fertilization is still relatively scarce for the region. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium fertilizations on oil palm production in different years in the state of Pará, Brazil. The study was conducted in Tailândia, Northeastern of Pará, Eastern Amazon, Brazil. A randomized block design was used in a 4 x 2 x 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with four levels of phosphorus, two sources of phosphorus, three levels of potassium and two levels of magnesium. Oil palm production responded positively to the increase in phosphorus levels, and until the eighth year of age of the plants, there was greater production when triple superphosphate was applied. Considerando que o manejo da irrigação afeta a fisiologia, a produção e a qualidade dos frutos, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as trocas gasosas nas folhas e a qualidade dos frutos da mangueira ‘Kent’ submetida a déficit hídrico controlado no Semiárido. O experimento foi conduzido em Petrolina-PE, semiárido do Vale do São Francisco. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial triplo, com quatro lâminas de irrigação (40; 60; 80 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc), três estádios fenológicos (F1 - floração, F2 - crescimento de frutos e F3 -maturação de frutos) e dois ciclos produtivos (2018 e 2019), com quatro repetições. Durante os estádios fenológicos, foram avaliados os parâmetros fisiológicos de trocas gasosas. Após a colheita, foram avaliados: teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, pH, firmeza e coloração da casca. A irrigação com lâmina entre 79,5 e 83,6% da ETc durante as fases avaliadas proporcionou maiores trocas gasosas nas folhas, maior firmeza e acidez nos frutos. ABSTRACT Brazil is the seventh largest producer of mangoes in the world, and the São Francisco Valley is the main producing region, with ‘Kent’ as one of the main cultivars. Considering that irrigation management affects physiological events, production and fruit quality, the objective of this work was to evaluate the gas exchange in the leaves and fruit quality of ‘Kent’ mango subjected to controlled water deficit in the semi-arid region. The experiment was carried out in Petrolina-PE, semi-arid region of the São Francisco Valley. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a triple factorial scheme, with four irrigation depths (40, 60, 80 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc), three phenological stages (F1 - flowering, F2 - fruit growth, F3 - fruit maturation) and two production cycles (2018 and 2019), with four replicates. During the phenological stages, the physiological parameters of gas exchange were evaluated. After harvesting, the following parameters were evaluated: soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, firmness and peel color.
