Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a estabilidade de implante e a microarquitetura óssea em duas técnicas de fresagem, comparando a técnica convencional (CT) e a osseodensificação (OD) (Versah Burs - Jackson - Mississippi - EUA). O torque de inserção do implante (IT), quociente de estabilidade primária (ISQ) e a estrutura trabecular peri-implantar foram avaliados em fragmentos ósseos obtidos de tíbia de porco (n=12), divididos entre CT (n=6) e OD (n=6). Após o procedimento de fresagem, foram instalados implantes (3,5x8,5 mm, Epikut - SIN - São Paulo - Brasil). O IT e o ISQ foram aferidos por meio de um torquimetro digital e análise de frequência de ressonância. Em seguida, os fragmentos ósseos contendo os implantes foram removidos com trefina e analisados por microtomografia computadorizada (µCT, 8,0 µm). A comparação entre os grupos foi realizada por meio do teste-t não-pareado (α=0.05). Os resultados revelaram que a OD promove maior torque de inserção (CT: 7,67 ± 2,44º Ncm; OD: 19,78 ± 5,26 Ncm) (p=0,0005), embora a estabilidade primária não tenha sido diferente (CT: 61.33 ± 4.66; OD:63.25 ± 4.58) (p=0,48). Houve um aumento significativo no volume ósseo peri-implantar (CT: 23,17±3,39 mm3; OD: 32,01±5,75 mm3) (p=0,0089) e parâmetros trabeculares: separação (CT: 0,4357 ± 0,03 mm; OD: 0,3865 ± 0,04 mm) (p=0,0449), número (CT: 1,626 ± 0,18 1/mm; OD: 1,946 ± 0,13 1/mm) (p=0,007) e espessura (CT: 0,1130 ± 0,009 mm; OD: 0,1328 ± 0,015 mm) (p=0,02) O índice de modelo estrutural (SMI) não demostrou diferença estatisticamente significativa (p=0.1228). Abstract: The aim was to evaluate primary implant stability and bone microarchitecture in two drilling situations, by comparing the conventional technique (CT) and osseodensification (OD) (Versah Burs - Jackson - Mississippi - USA). The implant insertion torque (IT), implant stability quotient (ISQ), and the peri-implant trabecular microstructure were assessed on bone fragments obtained from pig’s tibia (n=12), divided between CT (n=6) and OD (n=6). After the drilling procedure, the implants were installed (3.5x8.5 mm, Epikut - SIN - São Paulo - Brazil). The IT and ISQ were measured using a digital torque wrench and resonance frequency analysis. Then, the bone fragments containing the implants were removed with a trephine and analyzed by Microtomography (µCT, 8.0 µm). The comparison between groups was performed using the unpaired t-test (α=0.05). The results revealed that OD promotes a higher insertion torque (CT: 7.67±2.44 Ncm; OD: 19.78±5.26 Ncm) (p=0.0005), although ISQ was not different (CT: 61.33±4.66; OD: 63.25±4.58) (p=0.48). RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A mensuração da dor é complexa devido aos seus vários componentes, incluindo o aspecto subjetivo. É extremamente importante estabelecer um método eficaz e seguro para avaliar a dor orofacial (DOF). O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão sistemática para verificar se a termografia infravermelha (TI) pode ser usada como substituta de outros métodos de avaliação da intensidade da DOF neuropática ou musculoesquelética. CONTEÚDO: Foram pesquisados cinco bancos de dados: Pubmed, Scielo, Web of Science, Scopus e Cochrane. A questão PECO foi usada para orientar a definição dos critérios de elegibilidade usados para selecionar os artigos. O risco de viés foi analisado usando a escala Joanna Briggs. Cinco estudos atenderam aos critérios de elegibilidade. Dos cinco estudos elegíveis, quatro relataram uma associação entre a intensidade da DOF e a temperatura. Desses, um artigo mostrou que os pacientes com distúrbios temporomandibulares (DTM) e dor apresentaram um aumento na temperatura quando comparados com indivíduos sem dor. Os outros três artigos mostraram uma diminuição da temperatura com o aumento da intensidade da dor. Em apenas um estudo a intensidade da dor não foi significativamente associada à temperatura. CONCLUSÃO: A TI não substitui outros métodos de avaliação da intensidade da dor, mas é um importante aliado para complementar os procedimentos diagnósticos. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Measuring pain is complex due to its various components, including the subjective aspect. Establishing an effective and safe method for assessing orofacial pain (OFP) is extremely important. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review to verify whether Infrared Thermography (IT) can be used as a substitute for other methods of evaluating the intensity of neuropathic or musculoskeletal OFP. CONTENTS: Five databases were searched: Pubmed, Scielo, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane. The PECO question was used to guide the definition of eligibility criteria used to select the articles. The risk of bias was analyzed using the Joanna Briggs scale. Five studies met the eligibility criteria. Of the five eligible studies, four reported an association between orofacial pain intensity and temperature. Of these, one article showed that patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and pain showed an increase in temperature when compared with individuals without pain. The other three articles showed a decrease in temperature with increasing pain intensity. In only one study pain intensity was not significantly associated with temperature. CONCLUSION: IT does not replace other pain intensity assessment methods, but it is an important ally for complementing diagnostic procedures. Additional investigations are necessary to find a standardized method for obtaining and analyzing orofacial infrared images. Abstract This review aimed to assess the association between overweight/obesity and dental caries in Brazilian children/adolescents. Searches were performed in the Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, PubMed, Embase and SciELO, Lilacs and Open Grey literature databases up to June 2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies, the checklist for cohort studies, and the checklist for case-control studies were used. A total of 41 publications were included, and 15 meta-analyses were performed. The authors analyzed the differences in weighted mean difference (MD) and odds ratios (OR), and their corresponding confidence intervals (CI) (95%) for dental caries among eutrophic and obese and/or overweight children/adolescents. Meta-analyses showed that there was no association between overweight and/or obesity and dental caries in Brazilian children/adolescents for most anthropometric reference curves using BMI (Body Mass Index). A greater experience of dental caries was associated with well-nourished adolescents in permanent dentition, compared with obese individuals in the same dentition, as classified by the CDC 2000 curve (OR = 2.53, 95% CI;1.49–4.29; p = 0.0006; I2 = 0%) in dichotomous outcome studies, and (MD = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.08–1.15; p = 0.02; I2 = 0%) in continuous studies. RESUMO Objetivos: Identificar as foraminas linguais em uma população brasileira de 210 indivíduos, por meio de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico, a fim de orientar a instalação de implantes dentários em região de sínfise mentual. Métodos: Após identificação das foraminas linguais em corte parasagital, foram realizadas quatro medidas: distância até à crista alveolar, distância até à borda inferior da mandíbula, distância até o limite da cortical vestibular e ângulo de inclinação do rebordo alveolar. As medidas foram comparadas em relação ao sexo pelo teste Mann-Whitney. A comparação entre os sexos e o número de foraminas foi feito pelo teste qui-quadrado. A correlação de Pearson analisou a relação linear entre idade e número de foraminas. Resultados: As foraminas linguais estão presentes em 99,6% dos indivíduos. No sentido súpero-inferior, nota-se uma distância média até à crista alveolar de 21,4 mm, enquanto a distância média até à borda inferior da mandíbula foi de 13,1 mm. No sentido vestíbulo-lingual, nota-se uma distância média da foramina lingual até a cortical vestibular de 15,2 mm. O ângulo de inclinação do rebordo alveolar apresentou uma média de 25,4º. Em relação ao sexo, o teste só não foi significativo para a distância até a cortical vestibular. Conclusão: As foraminas linguais apresentam um trajeto descendente em 100% dos casos, posicionando-se, principalmente, nos terços médios (66,5%) e terços inferiores (32,7%) da altura do rebordo mandibular. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the lingual foramina in a Brazilian population of 210 individuals through Cone-Beam Computed Tomography images, in order to guide the installation of dental implants in the region of the mental symphysis. Methods: After identifying the lingual foramina on a parasagittal section, four measurements were taken: distance to the alveolar ridge, distance to the mandibular lower border, distance to the limit of the vestibular cortical, and alveolar ridge inclination angle. The measurements were compared in relation to gender by the Mann-Whitney test. The association between gender and the number of foramina was done by the chi-square test. Pearson’s correlation analyzed the linear relationship between age and number of foramina. Results: Lingual foramina are present in 99.6% of the research participants. In the upper-inferior direction, a mean distance to the alveolar ridge of 21.4 mm was noted, while the mean distance to the lower mandibular border was 13.1 mm. In the bucco-lingual direction, a mean distance from the lingual foramina to the vestibular cortical of 15.2 mm is noted. The inclination angle of the alveolar ridge had a mean of 25.4º. Regarding gender, the test was not significant only for the distance to the vestibular cortical. Conclusion: The lingual foramina had a descending way in 100% of cases, being positioned mainly in the middle thirds (66.5%) and lower thirds (32.7%) of the mandibular ridge height. The use of dental implants up to 13 mm in length and up to 4 mm in diameter in the region of the symphysis mentualis is recommended. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os microdanos ósseos em locais preparados para a instalação de implantes utilizando um modelo ex vivo acessando três velocidades de rotação de perfuração. Métodos: Fragmentos ósseos de costela bovina foram utilizados para a criação de 18 sítios de osteotomia em diferentes velocidades de rotação: 1200 rpm, 800 rpm e 400 rpm. As amostras foram coradas com Alaranjado de Xilenol e preparadas para análise microscópica em fluorescência e luz polarizada. Os microdanos ósseos foram avaliados em número e calibrados com base na área total óssea: densidade de microfraturas (Fr.D = n/mm2), morfologia (difusa ou linear) e densidade de microtrincas (Cr.D = n / mm2) e presença de espículas ósseas. Para complementar a análise, microtrincas lineares foram avaliadas por meio de microscopia confocal para visualização tridimensional. Resultados: Os microdanos ósseos incluíram microtrincas, danos difusos, microfraturas e formação de espículas. Houve uma associação entre MO e localização em osso esponjoso (p=0,0016), bem como uma correlação positiva entre Fr.D e Cr.D (p=0,05, r = 0,54). A ocorrência de microdanos ósseos não foi diferente entre as três velocidades de rotação utilizadas. Em 3D, a profundidade maior da microfissura atingiu 60,81 µm. Conclusão: Microdanos ósseos ocorrem durante a osteotomia e podem ser acessados em um modelo ex vivo na condução de experimentos em biomecânica. Sugere-se que a presença de microdanos não é influenciada pela velocidade de rotação durante a perfuração.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate bone microdamage in sites prepared for implant placement by using an ex vivo model with three drilling rotation speeds. Methods: Bovine bone ribs were used for the creation of 18 osteotomy sites at different rotation speeds: 1200 rpm, 800 rpm, and 400 rpm. Specimens were stained with xylenol orange and prepared for histological analysis by using fluorescence and polarized light microscopies. Bone microdamage was evaluated by number and based on total bone area, as follows: microfracture density (Fr.D = n/mm2), microcrack morphology (diffuse or linear), and density (Cr.D = n/mm2), and presence of bone chips. To complement the analysis, linear microcracks were assessed by using confocal microscopy for three-dimensional visualization. Results: Bone microdamage on the osteotomy sites included microcracks, diffuse damages, microfracture, and bone chip formation. There was an association between bone microdamage and cancellous bone (p 0.0016), as well as a positive correlation between Fr.D and Cr.D (p 0.05, r 0.54). BM occurrence was not different between the three rotation speeds. In 3D, the height of the microcrack depth was 60.81 µm. Conclusion: Bone microdamage occurs during osteotomy, and the ex vivo model used was effective for the assessment of these biomechanical parameters. In addition, microdamage was not influenced by the drilling rotation speed in this experimental condition.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the association between dental caries experience, severe dental caries experience and socioeconomic determinants on oral health-related quality of life among children and their families. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study whose sample was composed of children aged 4-12 years, who sought dental care in a dentistry school clinic, and their parents/caregivers. Dental caries experience and severe dental caries experience were assessed according to the DMF-T/dmf-t indexes. Parents/caregivers answered the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ), the Family Impact Scale (FIS) and a questionnaire on socioeconomic and demographic conditions. Data analysis included the chi-square test and Poisson regression (PR). Results: The sample was composed of 105 children and their parents/caregivers. Severe dental caries experience in children was determinant for negative perception of children's OHRQoL by parents/caregivers (PR = 1.22; CI = 1.05-1.41). Negative impact on OHRQoL perceived by family members was determined by severe dental caries experience in children (PR = 1.22; CI = 1.05-1.42) and family income <5 minimum wage (PR = 1.32; CI = 1.08-1.61). Conclusion: Severe dental caries experience was associated with a negative impact on OHRQoL perceived by children and their families. Low family income was associated with a negative impact on the OHRQoL perceived by children and their families.

Resumo Introdução Devido às suas propriedades biológicas e físico-químicas, o MTA tem sido indicado para diferentes situações clínicas na Endodontia. Objetivo O objetivo foi analisar a composição química dos cimentos MTA Angelus branco, cinza, e Repair HP. Material e método Foram confeccionados cinco corpos de prova de cada tipo de cimento estudado, com diâmetro de 4 mm e altura de 1 mm, utilizando fita condutora de carbono dupla face. Em seguida, as amostras foram analisadas com auxílio de um microscópio eletrônico de varredura acoplado ao aparelho de espectrometria de energia dispersiva. Posteriormente, foram submetidos ao teste estatístico Kolmogorov-Smirnov para verificar a normalidade. Os elementos químicos que apresentaram distribuição normal (média de 5%) foram submetidos ao teste ANOVA e o teste Kruskal-Wallis foi aplicado naqueles com distribuição assimétrica. Resultado Após a análise dos elementos químicos, foram observados para o MTA branco: O, Na, K, Mg, Al, Si, Ca e Bi; para o MTA cinza: O, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Bi, Fe e S, e para o Repair HP: O, Al, Mg, Si, Ca, Fe, Sr, C, Rb e W. Foram identificados 14 elementos químicos nas amostras analisadas (O, Na, Al, Mg, Si, S, K, Ca, Fe, Sr, Bi, C, Rb e W). Destes, cinco foram encontrados em todos os cimentos estudados: O, Al, Mg, Si e Ca. Conclusão Os elementos Rb, W e C foram encontrados somente na nova formulação de MTA da Angelus, o Repair HP. Nas amostras analisadas, o Ca e o O foram os que se apresentaram em maior quantidade.

Abstract Introduction Due to its biological and physicochemical properties, MTA has been indicated for different clinical situations in Endodontics. Objective The objective was to analyze the chemical composition of MTA Angelus white, gray and Repair HP cements. Material and method Five specimens of each type of cement studied were made, with 4mm diameter and 1mm height, using double-sided carbon conductive tape. Then, the samples were analyzed with the aid of a scanning electron microscope coupled to the dispersive energy spectrometry apparatus. They were later submitted to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistical test to verify normality. The chemical elements that presented normal distribution (average of 5%) were submitted to the ANOVA test and the Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to those with asymmetric distribution. Result After the analysis of the chemical elements, it was observed for the white MTA: O, Na, K, Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Bi; for gray MTA: O, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Bi, Fe and S; and for HP Repair: O, Al, Mg, Si, Ca, Fe, Sr, C, Rb and W. 14 chemical elements were identified in the samples analyzed (O, Na, Al, Mg, Si, S, K, Ca (Fe, Sr, Bi, C, Rb and W). Of these, 5 were found in all cements studied: O, Al, Mg, Si and Ca. Conclusion The elements Rb, W and C were found only in Angelus' new MTA formulation, Repair HP. In the samples analyzed, Ca and O were the ones that presented the largest amount.

Resumo Introdução A pneumatização do seio maxilar pode impossibilitar a instalação direta de implantes na região posterior da maxila, e a solução nesses casos é submeter o paciente a uma cirurgia de levantamento do assoalho do seio maxilar. A complicação mais comum dessa cirurgia é a perfuração da membrana sinusal. Variações anatômicas no interior do seio como, por exemplo, os septos ósseos, podem dificultar ainda mais o descolamento dessa membrana. Objetivo Avaliar a prevalência e as características dos septos sinusais em pacientes da Zona da Mata Mineira (Minas Gerais, Brasil), oferecendo informações relevantes para um planejamento mais seguro das cirurgias envolvendo essa região. Material e método Um total de 240 seios (120 pacientes) foram analisados, por meio de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC), verificando-se a presença de septos sinusais e classificando-os quanto ao tamanho e à localização anteroposterior. Resultado Dos 120 pacientes analisados, 45 (37,50%) apresentaram septos sinusais, sendo 66 septos no total. Destes, 33 (50%) estavam presentes na região média do seio maxilar e o tamanho médio dos septos foi de 7,23 mm. Não existiu diferença significativa no tamanho dos septos entre os sexos ou entre os lados direito e esquerdo. Conclusão As elevadas taxas de incidência dos septos sinusais justificam o seu estudo, que deve ser baseado principalmente em exames acurados, como a TCFC, uma vez que representam uma das variações anatômicas mais relevantes para os casos de cirurgias de levantamentos de seio.

Abstract Introduction Pneumatization of the maxillary sinus may make it impossible to insert implants directly in the posterior region of the maxilla, and in these cases, the solution is to submit the patient to maxillary sinus floor augmentation surgery. The most common complication of this surgery is sinus membrane perforation. Anatomical variations of the internal space of the sinus, such as the bone septa, may further hamper detachment of this membrane. Objective To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of sinus septa in patients from the Zona da Mata Mineira (Minas Gerais, Brazil), to offer relevant information for a safer planning of surgeries involving this region. Material and method A total of 120 patients (240 sinuses) were analyzed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, verifying the presence of sinus septa and classifying them for size and anteroposterior location. Result Of the 120 patients analyzed, 45 (37.50%) had sinus septa, 66 septa in total. Of these, 33 (50%) were present in the middle region of the maxillary sinus and the mean septum size was 7.23 mm. There was no significant difference in the septum size between the genders or between the right and left sides. Conclusion The high rates of incidence of sinus septa justify their study, which should be based mainly on accurate exams, such as CBCT, since they represent one of the most relevant anatomical variations for the cases of sinus surgeries.

Introduction: as part of endodontic treatment, root canals are cleaned and shaped, since shavings of dentin and organic materials, such as microorganisms, resulting from the action of instrumentation, create the so-called dental smear. Objective: carry out an in vitro evaluation of smear layer removal and dentinal tubule density reduction using chelating irrigation solutions. Methods: an experimental study was conducted for which 30 single-rooted human teeth were selected after initial radiographic examination to verify the presence of a single canal, absence of calcification, internal resorption and endodontic treatment either completed or underway. Next, instrumentation was performed with three different irrigation solutions: 17 % ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 10% citric acid and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (control group). Each instrumented tooth was then evaluated radiographically using a density scale made of aluminum with different density markers. Scanning electron microscope analysis was performed on three teeth from each group, which were treated with different irrigation solutions. Seven teeth from each group were infiltrated with methylene blue to determine marginal infiltration under the stereomicroscope. The teeth were evaluated on their three thirds: cervical, middle and apical. Results: radiographs did not reveal any statistically significant difference between the mean densities of the different groups of teeth in all thirds. Scanning electron microscopy showed a statistically significant difference between the three groups of irrigation substances (p < 0,001), with greater smear layer removal from the cervical third. Optical microscopy showed that infiltration was greatest in the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid group, followed by the citric acid group, and lowest in the control group. Conclusion: analysis of radiographic and microscopic density revealed that except for the control group, chelating agents were efficient in removing dental smear. None of the substances showed any alteration in the radiographic density of dentinal tubules.

Introducción: el tratamiento endodóntico realiza la limpieza y conformación del sistema de conductos radiculares, ya que virutas de dentina y materiales orgánicos, como los microorganismos, creadas por la acción de la instrumentación, forman el llamado barro dentinario. Objetivo: evaluar in vitro la remoción del barro dentinario y la disminución de la densidad de túbulos dentinarios, con soluciones irrigadoras quelantes. Métodos: se trata de un estudio experimental para el cual fueron seleccionados 30 dientes unirradiculares de humanos después del examen radiográfico inicial, y en el que se constató la presencia de canal único, ausencia de calcificación, reabsorción interna y tratamiento endodóntico concluido o en proceso. Luego se procedió a la instrumentación con tres diferentes soluciones irrigadoras: ácido etilenodiaminetetracético 17 %, ácido cítrico 10 % e hipoclorito de sodio 5,25 % (grupo control). Posteriormente se evaluó radiográficamente cada diente instrumentado con el uso de una escala de densidad que fue confeccionada de aluminio con diferentes marcadores de densidades. Para el análisis por microscopio electrónico de barrido se utilizaron tres dientes de cada grupo, tratados con diferentes soluciones irrigadoras. Siete dientes de cada grupo se infiltraron con azul de metileno para la lectura de la infiltración marginal en el microscopio estereoscópico. Los dientes fueron evaluados en sus tres tercios: cervical, medio y apical. Resultados: se encontró que radiográficamente no hubo diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los promedios de las densidades de los grupos de dientes en todos los tercios. Por microscopio electrónico de barrido se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los tres grupos de sustancias irrigadoras (p < 0,001), en el tercio cervical la remoción del barro dentinario fue mayor. Y por microscopio óptico se observó una mayor infiltración en el grupo de ácido etilenodiaminetetracético seguido del grupo ácido cítrico y por último el grupo control. Conclusión: el análisis de la densidad radiográfica y microscópica mostró que las sustancias quelantes fueron eficientes en la remoción del barro dentinario, excepto en el grupo control. Ninguna de las sustancias demostró alteraciones de densidad radiográfica de los túbulos dentinarios.

The dentigerous cyst is one of the most frequently found in the jaws. They present themselves radiographically as radiolucent images and more commonly unilocular. They are usually observed at routine checkups or when investigating the presence of unerupted teeth. The dentigerous cyst occurs mainly in the first three decades of life, their growth is slow and asymptomatic. The third molars, as well as supernumerary teeth may be involved with the formation of a dentigerous cyst, but its pathogenesis is still not fully known. Decompression, marsupialization and enucleation are the main forms of treatment, but some criteria must be considered for the treatment plan, such as cyst size, age, proximity to noble anatomical structures and clinical importance of the tooth involved.In order to establish a correct diagnosis and treatment plan is essential to make use of complementary exams and now a days the cone beam computed tomography is the most complete and accurate method in diagnostic imaging used in these situations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to highlight, through the presentation of a clinical case, the importance of cone beam computed tomography in the diagnosis and treatment planning of a dentigerous cyst.

El quiste dentígero es una de las patologías óseas que más frecuentes en el maxilar y la mandíbula. Se evidencia radiográficamente como una imagen radiolúcida y unilocular en la mayoría de los casos. Generalmente es detectado en exámenes de rutina o cuando se investiga la presencia de dientes no erupcionados. El quiste dentígero aparece principalmente en las tres primeras décadas de vida, con crecimiento lento y asintomático. Los terceros molares,así como dientes supernumerarios, pueden estar relacionados con su formación, sin embargo, su etiopatología no es totalmente conocida. La descompresión, marsupialización y la enucleación son las principales formas de tratamiento, pero algunos criterios deben ser considerados, como tamaño del quiste, edad del paciente, proximidad con estructuras anatómicas nobles e importancia clínica del diente involucrado. Para que se establezca un correcto diagnóstico y plan de tratamiento es esencial la utilización de exámenes complementarios de calidad, siendo, actualmente, la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico el más completo y preciso método de diagnóstico por imagen empleado en estas lesiones. El objetivo de este estudio fue resaltar, por medio de la presentación de un caso clínico, la importancia de la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico en el diagnóstico y planeamiento quirúrgico de un quiste dentígero asociado a un diente no erupcionado.

OBJETIVOS: Todos os materiais adicionados aos dentes deveriam apresentar uma adequada radiopacidade para permitir a detecção de cáries secundárias. Geralmente em cavidades extensas, materiais de base, como o cimento de hidróxido de cálcio, são usados com a função de proteger a polpa. Na tentativa de melhorar a eficiência na detecção radiográfica deste material, este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de determinar a radiopacidade de três cimentos de hidróxido de cálcio e comparar a radiopacidade destes materiais com a da dentina e do esmalte. MATERIAIS E MÉTODO: Foram radiografados corpos de prova de 1 mm de espessura de três cimentos de hidróxido de cálcio: Hydro-C, Dycal e Life, uma escala de densidade de alumínio, uma lâmina de chumbo e um corte de dente humano de 1 mm de espessura. As densidades ópticas foram obtidas após o processamento radiográfico. Os valores de radiopacidade dos cimentos de hidróxido de cálcio, dentina e esmalte foram expressos em espessuras equivalentes de alumínio. RESULTADOS: A análise de variância indicou diferença estatisticamente significativa apenas para o cimento Life que apresentou a menor radiopacidade quando comparado aos outros cimentos. Entretanto, todos os cimentos e o esmalte possuíram uma radiopacidade equivalente a 2 mm de Al, enquanto a dentina apresentava radiopacidade equivalente a 1 mm de Al. CONCLUSÃO: Todos os cimentos testados apresentaram radiopacidades semelhantes à do esmalte, estando de acordo com as especificações da ISO 4049.

AIMS: All materials added to teeth should present an adequate radiopacity to allow the detection of secondary caries. Usually, in extensive cavities, base materials like calcium hydroxide cement are used for the purpose of protecting the pulp. In an attempt to improve the efficiency of radiographic detection of this material, this study aimed to determine the radiopacity of three calcium hydroxide cements and to compare the radiopacity of these materials with dentin and enamel. METHODS: Radiographs were taken of 1-mm thick specimens of three calcium hydroxide cements: Hydro-C, Dycal and Life, an aluminium stepwedge, a lead foil, and one 1-mm thick human tooth slice. Densitometric measurements were obtained after radiographic processing. The radiopacity values of the calcium hydroxide cements, dentin and enamel were expressed in terms of the equivalent thickness of aluminium. RESULTS: The analysis of variance indicated statistically significant difference only for Life, which presented the lowest radiopacity when compared to the other cements. However, all cements and enamel possessed a radiopacity equivalent to 2mm Al, while dentin presented a radiopacity equivalent to 1mm Al. CONCLUSION: All tested cements presented a similar radiopacity to that of enamel and they meet the ISO 4049 specifications.
