RESUMO As microcistinas (MC), que estão entre as cianotoxinas mais encontradas em florações de cianobactérias, não são eficientemente removidas pelas tecnologias do ciclo completo de tratamento de água. Como barreira adicional para sua remoção, destaca-se o processo de adsorção com carvão ativado granular (CAG). Esta pesquisa comparou a eficiência de remoção de MC-LR por sete CAG produzidos a partir de diferentes matérias-primas, analisando as propriedades das amostras: umidade, teor de cinzas, pH e características texturais. Inicialmente, os resultados indicaram que as propriedades dos CAG foram influenciadas pelo material de origem, assim como pelo método de produção. Nos ensaios de adsorção, o modelo de Langmuir indicou que, em quatro horas, com dosagem de 100 mg.L-1, o CAG de linhito (CGLIN) apresentou a maior capacidade de remoção (97,2%) de MC-LR (Co: 115,1 µg.L-1), com qe,máx de 10,6 mg.g-1. O volume de mesoporos influenciou significativamente a capacidade adsortiva de MC dos carvões avaliados (r=0,98, Pearson). Esses resultados podem oferecer subsídios para a aplicação do processo de adsorção de MC-LR em estações de tratamento de água (ETA) para a minimização de intoxicações por água contaminada.

ABSTRACT Microcystins (MC), which are among the cyanotoxins more commonly found in cyanobacterial blooms, are not efficiently removed by full-cycle water treatment technologies. As an additional barrier, there is the adsorption process with granular activated carbon (GAC). This research compared the efficiency of MC-LR removal by seven GACs produced from different raw materials, analyzing these samples’ properties: moisture, ash content, pH and textural characteristics. Initially, the results indicated that the GAC properties were influenced by the source material, as well as by the production method. In the adsorption assays, the Langmuir model indicated that in 4h, with 100 mg.L-1 dosage, the granular activated carbon of lignite (CGLIN) had the highest MC-LR (Co: 115.1 µg.L-1) removal capacity (97.2%), with qe,max of 10.6 mg.g-1. The volume of mesopores significantly influenced the adsorption capacity of microcystin by the evaluated GACs (r=0.98, Pearson). These results can support the application of the MC-LR adsorption process in water treatment plants to minimize intoxication with contaminated water.

ABSTRACT: The focus of this study is to evaluate the effect of carboxyl and amino functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on the mechanical property of the epoxy resin filled with modified carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes were treated with sulfuric and nitric acids and also with hexamethylenediamine. The presence of acid and amine chemical groups on the carbon nanotube surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The composites were produced with epoxy resin and modified carbon nanotubes. Vickers hardness tests were carried out on the composites and neat resin. The results showed an increase of hardness in the composite prepared with functionalized carbon nanotubes. This phenomenon is due to the fact that the chemical interaction between modified carbon nanotube and epoxy resin is much stronger than between pristine carbon nanotube and epoxy resin. This stronger interaction is related to the presence of functionalized carbon nanotubes.

Niobium (Nb) was initially applied in the industry in 1933 to stabilize stainless steels against intergranular corrosion. Around 1970, niobium started to be used in many technological applications, especially in heat treatments at high temperatures, in the form of superalloys and, over the past four decades, Nb has been employed on an industrial scale. During recent years, applications of niobium have increased steadily in various segments such as: micro-alloyed steels, super alloys, thin films, medical implants, titanium and aluminum alloys, superconductors and copper alloys, electrolytic and ceramic capacitors. The worldwide demand for Nb grew at an annual rate of 10% between the years 2000-2010, were the sectors of energy, automotive and construction of the largest consumers FeNb. In 2000 the brazilian production was 35,458 t of Nb and, in 2007, reached 82,000 t of concentrate Nb. Brazil has the world's largest reserves of Nb (98.53%), which totaled 842.4 million t. So, in this paper is made a study on the evolution of the production of niobium in Brazil and its main industrial and technological applications.

Natural fibers from macadamia nut shell, dried coconut shell endocarp, unripe coconut mesocarp, sugarcane bagasse and pine wood residue were used to prepare activated carbon fibers (ACF) with potential application for removing microcystins. The ACF from pine wood and sugar cane bagasse were used to remove [D-Leucine¹]MCYST-LR from water. After 10 minutes of contact time, more than 98% of toxin was removed by the ACF. The microcystin adsorption monolayer, q m, in the ACF recovered 200 and 161 µg.mg-1, with the Langmuir adsorption constant, K L, of 2.33 and 1.23 L.mg-1. Adsorption of [D-Leucine¹]MCYST-LR in continuous process was studied for a fixed-bed ACF prepared from coconut shell and sugar cane bagasse and for two commercial activated carbon samples from treatment water plants of two Brazilian hemodialysis centers. Saturation of the beds occurred after 80 to 320 minutes, and the adsorption capacity for that toxin varied from 4.11 to 12.82 µg.mg-1.

The ever growing focus on environmental issues has raised concerns about scrap tires, whose major component - vulcanized rubber - does not degrade easily. When burned, tires release toxic gases containing substantial amounts of sulfur and ammonia in addition to other pollutants. Dumped on empty city lots, tires are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Many proposals have been put forward to handle the disposal of scrap tires, but none of them have proved to offer a definitive solution. The study reported here investigated the production of fuel oil and activated carbon from the pyrolysis of scrap tires. The initial mass of rubber yielded approximately 46% of oil, 40% of activated carbon and 14% of gases. The resulting activated carbon displayed a specific surface area of 200 m².g-1.
