Iron is an important ion that regulates many metabolic functions in the human body, and its deficiency or overload can cause serious health problems. In view of this, the development of tools that can quantify iron in aqueous media is quite valuable. A new material based on a metal-organic framework (MOF) and a calixarene derivative (CALIX), here named CALIX@UiO-66-NH2, was successfully prepared and used as a luminescent sensor for iron ions in a water matrix containing various metal ions. The post-synthetic modification was demonstrated to be efficient on the MOF (UiO-66-NH2) modification, leading to a hybrid platform. The effect of the combination of both components (MOF and CALIX) led to a platform more sensitive to iron detection than the independent compounds. The CALIX@UiO-66-NH2 sensor shows a linear response toward Fe3+ ions with satisfactory linearity (R2 = 0.994) within the concentration range of 6.74 × 10−6−1.72 × 10−5 mol L−1. The limit of detection was determined to be as low as 1.6 mg L−1. The antifouling booster biocides are frequently studied for toxic effects on the aquatic ecosystems. The present investigation proposes passive silicone rubber samplers as a collection method for biocides, once these methods can concentrate substances in aqueous matrices at very low levels. Through the passive sampler-water partition coefficient (Ksw) and the analyte chemical nature, we can optimize their extraction from the membrane to apply in the sample medium. We used the co-solvent method to determine the Ksw of three third-generation antifouling biocides, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, and dichlorooctylisothiazolinone (DCOIT), with log Ksw = 2.24, 4.01, and 2.38, respectively. Improving extraction also led to a recovery range higher than 70%, determinations were carried out by gas chromatography with an electron capture detector. APPLICATION OF MASS SPECTROMETRY WITH PAPER SPRAY IONIZATION AND THE OPLS-DA CHEMOMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF PROSTATE CANCER BY ANALYSIS OF URINE SAMPLES. In this study, paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PSI-MS) allied to orthogonal projections on the latent structure-discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) was employed to differentiate urine samples from patients with prostate cancer and control individuals (without prostate cancer). The parameters of sensitivity, specificity, efficiency and Matthew’s correlation coefficient determined to analyze the efficiency and quality of the OPLS-DA model obtained a value equal to 1, which means, respectively, that the model has a good performance to correctly classify true positive samples and true negatives. These results showed 100% correct classification of the samples from the training and test set, demonstrating a high efficiency of the OPLS-DA model when classifying all samples considered as belonging to the class of interest (urine from control patient) into class 1 and all samples considered as belonging to the non-interest class (urine from patients with prostate cancer) in class 0. This efficiency resulting from the application of this model suggests that the PSI-MS combined to OPLS-DA is a promisor approach for a rapid diagnosis of prostate cancer, via chemical fingerprints of urine samples. RESUMO O quiabeiro (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) é uma cultura pouco estudada, quando comparada a outras espécies da família Malvaceae, por isso apresenta grande potencial para estudos, principalmente, na área de melhoramento genético. A caracterização morfológica é uma etapa de pré-melhoramento que pode ser realizada através de descritores quantitativos e/ou qualitativos. Sendo assim, esse trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar morfologicamente acessos comerciais de quiabeiro para delimitar um programa de melhoramento para a cultura. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental do Instituto Federal de Alagoas - Campus Piranhas, utilizando o delineamento em blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos em cinco repetições. As plantas e os frutos foram caracterizados através dos descritores qualitativos. Foi utilizada a técnica de agrupamento hierárquico baseado na média não ponderada dos pares de acessos (UPGMA) para agrupar os acessos. A maior distância genética foi visualizada entre os acessos Santa Cruz-47 e Clemson Americano 80 e a menor entre os acessos Cariri e Apuim. Houve a formação de dois grupos pelo método de agrupamento UPGMA, sendo o grupo I formado pelos acessos Clemson Americano 80 e Canindé, e o grupo II dos demais acessos (Cariri, Apuim e Santa Cruz-47). Híbridos viáveis podem ser obtidos a partir de cruzamentos entre acessos do grupo I e do grupo II. ABSTRACT Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) has been less studied compared to other crop species of the family Malvaceae, thus presenting high potential for research, mainly in genetic improvement. Morphological characterization is a pre-breeding step that can be conducted using quantitative and qualitative descriptors. Thus, the objective of this study was to morphologically characterize commercial okra accessions to provide a foundation for breeding programs in this crop species. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Federal Institute of Alagoas, Piranhas, AL, Brazil, using a randomized block design with five treatments and five replications. Okra plants and fruits were characterized through qualitative descriptors, using a hierarchical clustering of accessions based on Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA). The greatest genetic distance was found between the Santa Cruz-47 and Clemson Americano-80 accessions, whereas the lowest distance was found between the Cariri and Apuim accessions. The UPGMA analysis resulted in two accession groups: group I consisting of Clemson Americano-80 and Canindé accessions, and group II consisting of Cariri, Apuim, and Santa Cruz-47 accessions. Viable hybrids can be obtained from crossings between accessions of group I and group II. Abstract Background: The Myrtaceae family represents one of the most diverse groups in South America. Yet, there are few studies on their reproductive characteristics. Among the species with limited information on their reproductive behavior are Myrceugenia euosma (O. Berg) D. Legrand and Siphoneugena reitzii D. Legrand. Questions: What are the floral attractions and resources of M. euosma and S. reitzii for pollinators? Who are the pollinators of these species? What is the predominant reproductive system in both species? Studied species: M. euosma and S. reitzii, two sympatric Myrtaceae from southern Brazil. Study site and dates: Urubici, Painel, and Rio Rufino, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. November 2021 - February 2022. Methods: Information was obtained on morphological aspects, anthesis time, stigmatic viability, floral resources, structures attractive to visitors, olfactory testing, observation and identification of floral visitors, and reproductive system testing. Results: The flowers of M. euosma opens between 11 am and 17 pm (- 20 pm), with full opening occurring mostly at night; S. reitzii flowers open between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., with a highest peak by 8 a.m. Flowers of both species have receptive stigmas until senescence. Pollen is the primary floral reward and the scent coming from the anthers combined with the floral display attract native bees and Apis mellifera, legitimate pollinators of both species. The lack of fruit development in the self-pollination tests support cross reproduction in both taxa. Conclusions: Both species exhibit traits consistent with melittophily syndrome and potential self-incompatibility. These results are essential for conservation efforts.

Resumen Antecedentes: La familia Myrtaceae es una de las más diversas en América del Sur, pero sus características reproductivas están poco estudiadas. Myrceugenia euosma (O. Berg) D. Legrand y Siphoneugena reitzii D. Legrand son dos especies con información limitada sobre su comportamiento reproductivo. Preguntas: ¿Cuáles son las atracciones florales y los recursos de M. euosma y S. reitzii para los polinizadores? ¿Quiénes son los polinizadores de estas especies? ¿Cuál es el sistema reproductivo predominante en ambas especies? Especies estudiadas: M. euosma y S. reitzii, dos Myrtaceae simpátricas del sur de Brasil. Sitio y años de estudio: Urubici, Painel y Río Rufino, Santa Catarina, Sur de Brasil. Noviembre de 2021 - febrero de 2022. Métodos: Se analizaron aspectos morfológicos, tiempo de antesis, viabilidad estigmática, recursos florales, estructuras atractivas para visitantes florales, pruebas olfativas, identificación de visitantes florales y ensayos del sistema reproductivo. Resultados: Las flores de M. euosma se abren entre las 11 am y las 5 pm (completamente durante la noche), y las de S. reitzii entre las 4 am y las 8 am. Ambas especies tienen estigmas receptivos hasta la senescencia. El polen es la principal recompensa floral, y el aroma de las anteras, junto con la visualización floral, atrae a abejas nativas y Apis mellifera, sus polinizadores legítimos. La autopolinización no resultó en frutos, lo que sugiere la predominancia de la reproducción cruzada en ambas especies. Conclusiones: M. euosma y S. reitzii muestran características de melitofilia y potencial autoincompatibilidad, lo que es crucial para su conservación.

RESUMO A correlação canônica é usada para correlacionar grupos de variáveis distintas. O objetivo deste estudo foi utilizar análise de correlação canônica para avaliar a interação entre atributos de qualidade da água causadores de entupimento e o desempenho hidráulico de gotejadores não autocompensantes operando com diluições de efluente de aquicultura em água de poço. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com três repetições, com cinco diluições nas parcelas (Diluição 1: 100% de efluente de aquicultura; Diluição 2: 75% de efluente de aquicultura + 25% de água de poço; Diluição 3 : 50% efluente de aquicultura + 50% água de poço; Diluição 4: 25% efluente de aquicultura + 75% água de poço; e Diluição 5: 100% água de poço), três emissores nas subparcelas (ST (1,6 L h-1) , SL (1,6 L h-1) e NJ (1,7 L h-1)), e três tempos de operação nas subsubparcelas (início do experimento, 80 e 160 horas, em que 0 horas de operação significa o início das avaliações). As análises estatísticas realizadas foram matriz de correlação e análise canônica. A análise de correlação canônica indicou que quando as concentrações dos atributos aumentam, o desempenho hidráulico dos gotejadores diminui. A interação desse grupo de atributos indica que o entupimento dos gotejadores que operam com as cinco diluições de efluente de aquicultura em água de poço ocorre pela ação combinada de agentes físicos, químicos e biológicos. ABSTRACT The canonical correlation is used to correlate groups of distinct variables. The objective of this study was to use canonical correlation analysis to evaluate the interaction between water quality attributes clogging-causing and the hydraulic performance of non-pressure compensating drippers operating with dilutions of aquaculture effluent in well water. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate whether bacterial inoculation improves the fermentative, microbiological, and chemical characteristics of silages of the elephant grass cv. BRS Capiaçu on different regrowth days. The experimental design was completely randomized and set up in a 3x2 factorial arrangement (three regrowth days, with and without inoculant), with four replications. There was a significant interaction between the regrowth days and inoculant on the pH, ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), and effluent losses (EL) of the silages. Inoculation decreased the EL with the advance of regrowth days and increased the dry matter recovery index compared to the silages without inoculant. The population of molds and yeasts decreased when inoculation was adopted to the forage harvested after 85 d. There was a significant interaction between the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) contents of the silages. Inoculation in the grass harvested after 85 d increased the DM contents of the silage. The highest CP contents were observed in the silages after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the grasses harvested after 110 and 135 d were higher than those of the grass harvested after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the silages without inoculant increased with the harvest age. The BRS Capiaçu forage silage harvested at 110 d demonstrated favorable performance for silage production. However, the influence of inoculant use was low for the characteristics evaluated.

Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar si la inoculación bacteriana mejora las características fermentativas, microbiológicas y químicas de los ensilados del pasto elefante cv. BRS Capiaçu en diferentes días de rebrote. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar y se estableció en un arreglo factorial 3x2 (tres días de rebrote, con y sin inoculante), con cuatro repeticiones. Hubo una interacción significativa entre los días de rebrote y el inoculante sobre el pH, el nitrógeno amoniacal (N-NH3) y las pérdidas por efluentes (PE) de los ensilados. La inoculación disminuyó la PE con el avance de los días de rebrote y aumentó la tasa de recuperación de materia seca en comparación con los ensilados sin inoculante. La población de mohos y levaduras disminuyó cuando se adoptó la inoculación al forraje cosechado después de 85 d. Hubo una interacción significativa entre la materia seca (MS), la proteína cruda (PC) y la fibra detergente neutro corregida por los contenidos de cenizas y proteína (FDNcp) de los ensilados. La inoculación en el pasto cosechado después de 85 días aumentó el contenido de MS del ensilado. Los mayores contenidos de PC se observaron en los ensilados después de 85 días. Los contenidos de FDNcp de los pastos cosechados después de 110 y 135 días fueron mayores que el del pasto cosechado después de 85 días. El contenido de FDNcp de los ensilados sin inoculante aumentó con la edad de cosecha. El ensilado de forraje de BRS Capiaçu cosechado a los 110 días demostró un desempeño favorable para la producción de ensilado. Sin embargo, la influencia del uso de inoculantes fue baja para las características evaluadas.

Abstract Weeds negatively affect the sustainability of farming systems in the European Union (EU), the management of which relies heavily on herbicides. The EU's farm-to-fork strategy aims to promote agroecology and the transition to sustainable and resilient farming systems, including the reduction of herbicide use. GOOD is a 4-year project that takes a multidisciplinary approach and aims to create and evaluate agroecological weed management (AWM) systems, and demonstrate that the adoption of such a system will improve the sustainability and resilience of farming systems across Europe and beyond. This objective will be achieved through the development, evaluation and demonstration of innovative combinations of AWM using cover crops, beneficial microorganisms and digital tools. This will be carried out in living-labs, co-created with stakeholders in 6 different EU pedoclimatic regions, including annual and perennial crops and conventional, organic and mixed cropping systems. The combination of innovative and socio-economically validated sustainable agroecological practices will generate social, economic and environmental benefits through the reduction or elimination of chemical inputs and optimized use of natural resources GOOD will create an Agroecological Weed Management Network (AWMN), inviting agroecology practitioners from all continents to dialogue and exchange knowledge and best practices towards diversified agroecology-based farming systems.

Resumen Las hierbas adventicias afectan negativamente a la sostenibilidad de los sistemas agrícolas de la Unión Europea (UE), cuya gestión depende en gran medida de los herbicidas. La estrategia "de la granja a la mesa" de la UE tiene como objetivo promover la agroecología y la transición hacia sistemas agrícolas sostenibles y resilientes, incluyendo la reducción del uso de herbicidas. GOOD es un proyecto de 4 años de duración que adopta un enfoque multidisciplinar y aspira a crear y evaluar sistemas de gestión agroecológica de las malas hierbas (AWM, por sus siglas en inglés), y demostrar que la adopción de dicho sistema mejorará la sostenibilidad y la resiliencia de los sistemas de cultivo en toda Europa y fuera de ella. Este objetivo se logrará mediante el desarrollo, la evaluación y la demostración de combinaciones innovadoras de AWM utilizando cubiertas vegetales, microorganismos beneficiosos y herramientas digitales. Esto se llevará a cabo en living-labs, co-creados con las partes interesadas en 6 diferentes regiones pedoclimáticas de la UE, incluyendo cultivos anuales y perennes y sistemas de cultivo convencionales, ecológicos y mixtos. La combinación de prácticas agroecológicas sostenibles innovadoras y validadas socioeconómicamente generará beneficios sociales, económicos y medioambientales mediante la reducción o eliminación de insumos químicos y el uso optimizado de los recursos naturales. GOOD creará una Red de Gestión Agroecológica de las Malas Hierbas (AWMN), invitando a profesionales de la agroecología de todos los continentes al diálogo y al intercambio de conocimientos y mejores prácticas hacia sistemas agrícolas diversificados basados en la agroecología.

Chagas disease is a relevant public health threat that affects over 6 million people worldwide, resulting in devastating social and economic consequences. Moreover, the therapeutic options are limited, highlighting the urgency in searching for novel active antitrypanosomal molecules. Compounds with either thiazole or biaryl units have been described as possessing anti Trypanosoma cruzi activities. Therefore, here, we describe the synthesis of nine arylated and diarylated thiazole derivatives and the evaluation of their in vitro toxicity on mammalian cells as well as their anti T. cruzi activity. The compounds were prepared in straightforward synthetic routes, using Hantzsch thiazole synthesis and cross-coupling reactions as key steps. A pyridyl-phenyl-thiazole (PPT) derivative (4c) presented 76% of T. cruzi growth inhibition in preliminary tests using a fixed concentration of 20 µM. This compound was used as a scaffold for the synthesis of two novel PPT analogs (4g and 4h). Dose-response assays on intracellular forms of T. cruzi demonstrated that these three compounds presented high antiparasitic potency (half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values ranging from 1.15 to 2.38 μM) and low toxic profile against L929 cell lines. RESUMO: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a resposta sorológica induzida após vacinação com quatro formulações comerciais contendo o BVDV-1, BVDV-2 e BoHV-1 em novilhas jovens com títulos de anticorpos maternos circulantes, assim como analisar uma possível resposta anamnéstica em vacinações, após a completa metabolização dos anticorpos maternais aos seis meses de idade. Foram selecionadas 87 novilhas Holandesas, distribuídas aleatoriamente em quatro grupos experimentais de acordo com as vacinas: vacina A (n = 22), vacina B (n = 22), vacina C (n = 24) e vacina D (n = 19), aplicadas aos dias 60, 90 e 180 de vida. Testes de vírus-neutralização (VN) foram realizados no momento basal (D60) e 30 dias após a aplicação da 2ª dose (D120) e 3ª dose (D210). Observou-se efeito do grupo (P ≤ 0,001), dia da vacinação (P ≤ 0,001), e interação grupo versus dia (P ≤ 0,001) para os títulos de anticorpos produzidos contra o BVDV-1, BVDV-2 e BoHV-1, por meio do comando PROC MIXED (Statistical Analysis System, versão 9,4). Os títulos de anticorpos contra o BVDV-1, BVDV-2 e BoHV-1 eram semelhantes no momento basal aos 60 dias de vida. Os títulos médios de anticorpos foram constantes e persistentes contra o BVDV-1 nas novilhas imunizadas com as vacinas A e C, porém apenas a vacina A teve este mesmo perfil contra o BVDV-2. Em relação ao BoHV-1, os grupos B, C e D apresentaram queda nos títulos de anticorpos do D60 ao D210, enquanto as novilhas do grupo A apresentaram queda do D60 ao D120, com aumento intenso dos títulos no D210. A frequência de animais com títulos acima dos protetores contra o BVDV-1, BVDV-2 e BoHV-1 foram muito baixos ou nulos após as vacinações nos animais imunizados com as formulações B, C e D. Sugere-se que a imunidade passiva interferiu negativamente na indução de anticorpos pelas vacinas, observando-se indicadores de resposta anamnéstica apenas para as novilhas vacinadas com a formulação A. ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the vaccine-induced serological response after administering four commercial formulations containing Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) type-1, BVDV-2, and Bovine Herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) to young heifers with circulating maternal antibody titers. The study also determined the anamnestic response to vaccinations after the complete metabolization of maternal antibodies when the calves reached six months. Eighty-seven Holstein heifers were selected and randomly distributed into four experimental groups based on the vaccine administered. The four vaccine-based experimental groups were as follows: vaccine A (n = 22), vaccine B (n = 22), vaccine C (n = 24), and vaccine D (n = 19), given on the 60th, 90th, and 180th day of life, respectively. Virus-neutralization (VN) tests were performed at baseline (day 60) and 30 days after administering the second (day 120) and third doses (day 210). We analyzed the effect of vaccine group (P ≤ 0.001), day of vaccination (P ≤ 0.001), and group versus vaccine day interaction (P ≤ 0.001) for antibody titers produced against BVDV-1, BVDV-2, and BoHV-1 using the PROC MIXED method (Statistical Analysis System -SAS 9.4). Antibody titers against BVDV-1, BVDV-2, and BoHV-1 were similar at baseline and on day 60 of life. The mean antibody titers were constant and persisted against BVDV-1 in heifers immunized with vaccines A and C. Heifers immunized with vaccine A alone had a similar effect against BVDV-2. Regarding BoHV-1, the antibody titers decreased between days 60 and 210 in groups B, C, and D. The antibody titer for heifers in group A also decreased between days 60 and day 120, and an intense increase in titers was observed on day 210. After being immunized with formulations B, C, and D, the frequency of animals with titers above protective levels for BVDV-1, BVDV-2, and BoHV-1 was very low or null. Indicators of anamnestic response were observed in heifers vaccinated with formulation A only. Therefore, it can be concluded that passive immunity negatively interferes with antibody production after vaccination. Resumo A melhoria da germinação de plantas é fundamental para garantia de mudas de melhor qualidade. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar se o condicionamento de sementes com qualidade de luz (light quality - LIQ) e extrato aquoso de tubérculos de Cyperus rotundus (AEC) modula a germinação e o crescimento inicial de plântulas de Moringa oleifera. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4x4, sendo quatro condições de LIQ (luz branca, azul, vermelha e vermelho distante) e quatro concentrações de AEC (0, 25, 50 e 100%). O condicionamento de sementes com luz vermelha reduziu o tempo médio de emergência, enquanto que as luzes azul, vermelha e vermelho extremo associadas a 50% de extrato aquoso de C. rotundus aumentaram o comprimento inicial da parte aérea e o acúmulo de pigmentos fotossintéticos. Condicionamento de sementes com luz azul induziu a formação de plântulas com menor comprimento final da parte aérea, no entanto, a aplicação de 100% de extrato aquoso de C. rotundus reverteu o menor crescimento. A luz branca associada às concentrações de 50 e 100% de fitormônios promoveu maior taxa de crescimento relativo da parte aérea de plântulas. Nossa pesquisa mostra que o condicionamento de sementes com radiação espectral de luz e extrato aquoso de tubérculos de Cyperus rotundus modula a germinação e o crescimento inicial de plântulas de Moringa oleifera. Mais trabalhos precisam ser feitos para determinar os compostos do AEC responsáveis que que atuam como fitormônios e são responsáveis pelo crescimento inicial.

Abstract Improving plant germination is essential to guarantee better quality seedlings. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate whether the seed priming with light quality (LIQ) and the aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus (AEC) tuber could modulate the germination and initial growth of Moringa oleifera L. seedlings. The experimental design was a completely randomized in the 4x4 factorial scheme, composed of four LIQ conditions (white, blue, red, and distant red light) and four AEC concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 100%). Seed priming with red light reduced the average emergence time, while blue, red, and extreme red lights associated with 50% of aqueous extract of C. rotundus increased shoot initial length and photosynthetic pigment accumulation. Seed priming with blue light resulted in seedlings with a shorter final shoot length. However, application of 100% of aqueous extract of C. rotundus reversed this. The white light in combination with concentrations of 50 and 100% of AEC promoted a higher relative shoot growth rate of seedlings. The research revealed that seed priming with light quality and aqueous extracts of C. rotundus tubers modulates the germination and initial growth of M. oleifera seedlings. More work needs to be done to determine the responsible compounds in AEC that is responsible for priming growth as phytohormones.

Resumo O conteúdo de dopamina nas estruturas cerebrais tem sido relacionado à excitabilidade neuronal e várias abordagens têm sido utilizadas para estudar este fenômeno durante o período de vulnerabilidade às crises. No presente trabalho, descrevemos os efeitos da depleção de dopamina após a administração de 6-hidroxidopamina (6-OHDA) na região pars compacta da substância negra de ratos submetidos ao modelo de epilepsia com pilocarpina. A susceptibilidade ao estado de mal epiléptico induzido pela pilocarpina, bem como a frequência de crises espontâneas e recorrentes durante o período crônico do modelo foi determinada. Sendo o hipocampo uma das principais estruturas afetadas no desenvolvimento desse modelo experimental de epilepsia, os níveis de dopamina nessa região foram determinados após a administração da droga. No primeiro experimento, 62% (15/24) dos ratos pré-tratados com 6-OHDA e 45% (11/24) daqueles que receberam ácido ascórbico como solução controle evoluíram para crises límbicas motoras e para o estado de mal epiléptico, após a administração de pilocarpina. A gravidade das crises durante o período agudo do modelo foi significativamente maior nos ratos epilépticos experimentais (56,52%) do que nos ratos controle (4,16%). No segundo experimento, não houve diferença significante entre os grupos quanto à frequência de crises na fase crônica do modelo. Nossos dados mostraram que a dopamina pode desempenhar um papel importante na gravidade das crises na fase aguda da pilo, o que parece ser exercido por sua ação inibitória da dopamina sobre a expressão motora das crises.

Abstract The dopamine content in cerebral structures has been related to neuronal excitability and several approaches have been used to study this phenomenon during seizure vulnerability period. In the present work, we describe the effects of dopamine depletion after the administration of 6-hidroxidopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta of male rats submitted to the pilocarpine model of epilepsy. Susceptibility to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE), as well as spontaneous and recurrent seizures (SRSs) frequency during the chronic period of the model were determined. Since the hippocampus is one of main structures in the development of this experimental model of epilepsy, the dopamine levels in this region were also determined after drug administration. In the first experiment, 62% (15/24) of 6-OHDA pre-treated rats and 45% (11/24) of those receiving ascorbic acid as control solution progressed to motor limbic seizures evolving to SE, after the administration of pilocarpine. Severeness of seizures during the model´s the acute period, was significantly higher in epileptic experimental rats (56.52%), than in controls (4.16%). In the second experiment, the frequency of seizures in the model’s chronic phase did not significantly change between groups. Our data show that dopamine may play an important role on seizure severity in the pilo’s model acute period, which seems to be due to dopamine inhibitory action on motor expression of seizure.

Resumo A leishmaniose visceral é uma doença tropical negligenciada. Foram avaliadas a distribuição espacial dos casos de leishmaniose visceral no estado de Alagoas. Todos os casos de LV, registrados pela secretaria de saúde, foram analisados e georreferenciados. Entre 2008 e 2017, 97,1% dos municípios apresentaram classificação esporádica de transmissão. Com a evolução temporal, a incidência de casos de leishmaniose visceral se concentrou na maioria dos municípios da microrregião de Santana do Ipanema-AL. A análise espaço-tempo, se considerada, pode promover o aprimoramento das ações de vigilância e controle da leishmaniose visceral.

Abstract Visceral leishmaniosis is a neglected tropical disease. We evaluated the spatial distribution of cases of visceral leishmaniosis in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. All cases of VL, registered by the health department, were analyzed and georeferenced. Results: Between 2008 and 2017, 97.1% of the municipalities presented sporadic classification of transmission. With temporal evolution, the incidence of cases of visceral leishmaniosis was concentrated in most municipalities in the microregion of Santana do Ipanema-AL. Space-time analysis, if considered, may promote the improvement of surveillance and control actions of visceral leishmaniosis.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a cobertura vacinal segundo estrato social, em crianças até 24 meses de vida, residentes no município de Londrina (PR). Métodos Inquérito de base populacional, realizado entre em 2021 e 2022, em que se avaliou a cobertura vacinal e os aspectos sociodemográficos das mães e das famílias, através do teste qui-quadrado de Pearson. Resultados Em uma amostra de 456 crianças, a cobertura vacinal completa variou de acordo com o estrato social, sendo no estrato A de 36,0% (IC95% 26,8;57,8); no estrato B, de 59,5% (IC95% 26,1;86); no estrato C, de 66,2% (IC95% 51,7;78,1); e no estrato D, de 70,0% (IC95% 56,1;81,0). Conclusão A análise da cobertura vacinal indicou o estrato social A como o de maior risco para doenças prevenidas por vacinas.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze vaccination coverage according to social strata in children up to 24 months old, living in the municipality of Londrina (PR), Brazil. Methods This was a population-based survey conducted between 2021 and 2022, in which vaccination coverage and sociodemographic aspects of mothers and families were evaluated using Pearson’s chi-square test.
