RESUMO: Descreve-se o primeiro caso de pitiose rinofacial com disseminação em um equino adulto no Uruguai. O animal apresentava uma massa parcialmente circunscrita medindo 30 x 23 x 9 cm acometendo o lado direito da face e com envolvimento dos tecidos cutâneo, subcutâneo e muscular, cavidade nasal direita e estruturas adjacentes. Os principais achados patológicos incluem a formação de kunkers microscopicamente caracterizados por dermatite piogranulomatosa e eosinofilica, reação de Splendore-Hoeppli, e numerosas hifas intralesionais imunomarcadas com anticorpo policlonal anti-Pythium insidiosum. Lesões semelhantes foram observadas no pulmão e nos linfonodos submandibulares. O diagnóstico foi baseado nas lesões histológicas características e imunomarcação com anticorpo anti-P. insidiosum. ABSTRACT: We described the first case of rhinofacial pythiosis with dissemination in an adult horse in Uruguay. The affected horse presented a partially circumscribed mass measuring 30 x 23 x 9 cm affecting the right side of the face with involvement of cutaneous, subcutaneous, and muscular tissues, the right nasal cavity, and adjacent structures. At postmortem examination, the main lesions were “kunkers” characterized by pyogranulomatous and eosinophilic dermatitis, Splendore-Hoeppli reaction and numerous intralesional hyphae immunolabeling with polyclonal anti-Pythium insidiosum antibody. Similar lesions were observed in the lung and submandibular lymph nodes. The diagnosis was made by the characteristic histological lesions and the strong immunolabelling by anti-P. insidiosum antibody. ABSTRACT The recent global health crisis highlighted the fundamental role of family farming and public procurement policies in guaranteeing the human right to adequate food. This documentary analysis compares public procurement experiences (2019 to 2022) in a region of Brazil and another in Colombia, focusing on family farming from a gender perspective to identify challenges and best practices. Among the findings, it is noteworthy that although structured policies for public procurement already exist in Brazil, regional realities pointed to challenges during the period. Advances in Colombia were noted with the issuance of Law 2046 of 2020. In both countries, the low role of women in the ownership of rural properties and decision-making was evident, despite their participation in the rural family productive workforce.

RESUMEN La pasada crisis sanitaria mundial evidenció el papel fundamental de la agricultura familiar y las políticas de compras pública para garantizar el derecho humano a la alimentación adecuada. En este análisis documental, se compararon las experiencias de compras públicas (2019 a 2022), en una región de Brasil y otra de Colombia, de la agricultura familiar, desde una perspectiva de género, con el objetivo de identificar desafíos y buenas prácticas. Entre los hallazgos, se destaca que, aunque ya existen políticas estructuradas para las compras públicas en Brasil, la realidad regional señaló desafíos en el período. Se señalaron los avances en Colombia, con la expedición de la Ley 2046 de 2020. En ambos países se evidenció el bajo rol de la mujer en la titulación de las propiedades rurales y en la toma de decisiones, aunque se evidencia su participación en la fuerza productiva rural familiar.

Resumen La mucormicosis es una infección fúngica poco frecuente causada por hongos del orden Mucorales, la cual se presenta en individuos inmunocomprometidos o con pérdida de la integridad de la barrera de piel o mucosas. Se reportan cuatro casos de mucormicosis rinocerebral atendidos en un hospital de tercer nivel de Cali (Colombia) durante un periodo de tres años. Los cuatro pacientes presentaron diferentes cuadros clínicos y tiempos de evolución. Todos tenían diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus de tipo 2, de novo o previo, con una hemoglobina glucosilada de ingreso mayor del 10 % y en todos se descartaron otras enfermedades que explicaran su compromiso inmunitario. La mucormicosis se diagnosticó por la visualización directa de hifas hialinas sincitiales (coenocytic) en las biopsias tomadas. El pilar del tratamiento fue la anfotericina B liposómica junto con el desbridamiento quirúrgico. Dos pacientes presentaron coinfección bacteriana. De los cuatro, uno firmó su egreso voluntario sin completar el tratamiento y otro falleció. Los dos pacientes restantes han asistido a los controles y han mostrado una adecuada evolución.

Abstract Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by fungi of the Mucorales order that occurs in immunocompromised individuals or with loss of skin or mucosa barrier integrity. This report presents four cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis attended at a third-level hospital in Cali (Colombia) during a period of three years. All patients had different case histories and times of evolution. All four had a previous or de novo diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus, with glycated hemoglobin higher than 10% on admission. We ruled out other possible pathologies that could explain their immunocompromised condition. Mucormycosis diagnosis was made with direct visualization of hyaline coenocytic hyphae on biopsies. The basis of treatment was liposomal amphotericin B and surgical debridement. Two patients presented bacterial coinfection. One asked for voluntary discharge without having completed the treatment, and another one died. The remaining two have attended controls and had an adequate evolution.

Resumen Introducción: Este artículo de carácter reflexivo busca formular una matriz teórica de abordaje de los procesos colectivos que permita recuperar el conocimiento, la reflexión, la articulación de las vivencias y saberes esenciales para producir -o conservar- condiciones para la reproducción de la vida. Objetivo: Para dar cuenta de los objetivos, se reflexiona sobre los procesos iniciados en ollas populares y merenderos vecinales, como respuesta a la inseguridad alimentaria acentuada por la pandemia en el Departamento de Maldonado, Uruguay entre 2020 y 2021. Estos procesos deben ser observados en el contexto de políticas públicas implementadas a nivel nacional y departamental, con enfoques y asignaciones presupuestales deficitarias. Método y técnica: Para ello, se optó por un encuadre metodológico de análisis, reflexión y sistematización de información secundaria de diversos artículos e información actualizada al respecto. Resultados: Algunos resultados del artículo refieren a la construcción de un marco referencial que permitió ilustrar vacíos y nodos teóricos que posibilitan mecanismos de reflexividad en relación con las «nuevas necesidades», sentidos y significaciones de las comunidades y organizaciones de la sociedad civil enfocadas a la seguridad alimentaria en el Departamento de Maldonado. Conclusiones: Este abordaje resulta estratégico para el análisis de las prácticas que propendan al fortalecimiento de derechos, la solidaridad, el cuidado comunitario y las potencialidades de construcción de «lo común», sus tensiones, contradicciones y desafíos. En este sentido, resulta una aproximación pertinente para dar cuenta de las contingencias y dinamismo que posee el objeto de estudio desde un punto de vista experiencial.

Abstract Introduction: This reflective article seeks to formulate a theoretical matrix to approach collective processes that allows recovering knowledge, reflection, and the articulation of experiences and essential knowledge to produce -or preserve- conditions for the reproduction of life. Objective: It reflects on the processes initiated in popular pots and merenders as a response to food insecurity, accentuated by the pandemic and the mitigation measures that were initiatives of neighbors or groups of neighbors implemented in the Department of Maldonado, Uruguay, between 2020 and 2021. These processes must be observed in the context of public policies implemented at the national and departmental levels, with deficit apprhes and budgy otros locations. Method and technique: The methodological framework of analysis, reflection and systematization of secondary information was chosen, taking into account various articles and updated information in this regard. Results: Some of the results of the article refer to the construction of a referential framework that made it possible to illustrate gaps and theoretical nodes that enable mechanisms of reflexivity in relation to the «new needs», senses and meanings of communities and civil society organizations focused on food security in the Department of Maldonado. Conclusions: This approach is strategic for the analysis of practices aimed at strengthening rights, solidarity, community care and the potential of building «the common«, its tensions, contradictions and challenges. In this sense, it is a pertinent approach to account for the contingencies and dynamism of the object of study from an experiential point of view.

RESUMEN: Introducción: Las enfermedades periodontales tienen efectos locales y sistémicos sobre algunas enfermedades sistémicas. Propósito: Identificar cambios después de una jornada informativa preventiva sobre la relación de las EP y las enfermedades sistémicas en un ambiente universitario de carreras del área de la salud. Materiales y métodos: Estudio transversal no analítico cuyo objeto de estudio fue el cambio de la información obtenida por los participantes de una jornada de educación en salud en una muestra no aleatoria de 264 individuos de facultades de salud diferentes a odontología quienes recibieron encuestas “antes y después”. Las variables de los cambios en los conocimientos se evaluaron mediante una escala Likert. Resultados: Antes de la estrategia, el 51,6% consideraban poco importante o que podría ser importante la salud oral como estilo de vida saludable vs un 99.2% al final. El 67.8 % de los sujetos, consideraban que la enfermedad periodontal no compartía factores de riesgo con condiciones sistémicas vs un 92.9%. Se incrementó de un 67.75% a 93.2% el reconocimiento del control del riesgo periodontal como estrategia para incidir en las enfermedades sistémicas. Conclusión: Una estrategia educativa sensibilizar positivamente sobre la importancia de la prevención de las enfermedades periodontales y las condiciones sistémicas.

ABSTRACT: Introduction: Periodontal diseases have local and systemic effects on some systemic diseases. Purpose: Identify changes after a preventive information session on the relationship between PD and systemic diseases in health faculties. Materials and methods: Non-analytical cross-sectional study whose object was the change in the information obtained by the participants of a health education session in a non-random sample of 264 individuals from health faculties other than dentistry who received “before and after” surveys. The variables were evaluated using a Likert scale. Results: Before the strategy, 51.6% considered oral health to be important for a healthy lifestyle vs. 99.2% at the end of the session. 67.8% of the subjects considered that periodontal disease shared risk factors with systemic conditions before the session vs. 92.9% after it. The recognition of periodontal risk control as a strategy to influence systemic diseases increased from 67.75% to 93.2%. Conclusion: An educational strategy raises a positive awareness of the importance of preventing periodontal diseases and systemic conditions.

Resumo O objetivo do artigo é estimar a prevalência de transtornos relacionados ao uso de álcool (TRA) e fatores associados entre indivíduos da população brasileira que reportaram doenças crônicas não-transmissíveis (DCNT), transtornos mentais (TM) e doenças infeciosas (DI). Análise secundária do III Levantamento Nacional sobre o Uso de Drogas pela População Brasileira, cujo desfecho principal foi a presença de TRA. A prevalência de TRA foi estimada para três subgrupos: indivíduos que reportaram DCNT, TM e DI. Os fatores associados a TRA dentro de cada grupo foram analisados utilizando modelos de regressão logística. Dos 15.645 adultos entrevistados, 30,5% (IC95%: 29,4-31,5) reportaram DCNT, 17,6% (IC95%: 16,5-18,7) TM e 1,6% (IC95%: 1,2-1,9) DI. Considerando as comorbidades, a amostra analítica foi de 6.612. Não foi encontrada diferença estatisticamente significativa na prevalência de TRA entre indivíduos com DCNT (7,5% [IC95% 6,1-8,7]), TM (8,4% [IC95% 6,7-10,2]) e DI (12,4% [IC95% 7,0-17,8]). Os principais fatores associados a TRA, em todos os grupos, foram ser do sexo masculino e jovem. Prevalence of AUD was estimated for three subgroups: individuals that reported NCDs, MDs, and IDs. Factors associated with AUD in each group were analyzed using logistic regression models. Of the 15,645 adults interviewed, 30.5% (95%CI: 29.4-31.5) reported NCDs, 17.6% (95%CI: 16.5-18.7) MDs, and 1.6% (95%CI: 1.2-1.9) IDs. Considering comorbidities, the analytical sample was 6,612. No statistically significant difference was found in the prevalence of AUD between individuals with NCDs (7.5% [95%CI: 6.1- 8.7]), MDs (8.4% [95%CI: 6.7-10.2]), and IDs (12.4% [95%CI: 7.0-17.8]). The main factors associated with AUD in all the groups were male sex and young adult age. Considering the high prevalence of AUD in all the groups, systematic screening of AUD is necessary in health services that treat NCDs, MDs, and IDs.

Abstract The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining two injectable progesterone (iP4) formulas for estrous synchronization in ewes and to compare it with traditional intravaginal progesterone devices. Additionally, the study assessed whether the inclusion of GnRH enhances the reproductive outcomes of the iP4 treatment. Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, 20 Santa Inês ewes were divided into two groups: one group received intravaginal progesterone devices, and the other received combined long-acting and short-acting iP4. In the second experiment, 30 Corriedale ewes were divided into two groups: one received the combined iP4 with GnRH, and the other without GnRH. Estrous, ovulation, follicular populations, and progesterone concentrations were monitored. The combined iP4 treatment induced an artificial luteal phase and produced reproductive responses similar to those obtained with intravaginal devices. In the first experiment, the iP4 treatment tended to result in more synchronized ovulation compared to the control (P=0.095). In the second experiment, adding GnRH enhanced the quality of the corpus luteum, as indicated by increased diameter and vascularization on Day 23 (P=0.047 and P=0.02, respectively). The combined administration of long-acting and short-acting iP4 effectively synchronized estrous in ewes and showed similar efficacy to traditional intravaginal devices. The inclusion of GnRH improved luteal quality, suggesting potential benefits for reproductive management in ewes. In recent years, studies investigating psychological states such as happiness in individuals’ health have increased. Aim This study investigated a possible association between self-perceived oral health and happiness in university students. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed in a cohort of university students who entered in the 2016 academic year at the Federal University of Pelotas, located in southern Brazil. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, including demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, psychosocial traits, and oral health-related questions. Happiness was measured through a question accompanied by the Faces Scale of Andrews and Whitey. Poisson regression models with robust variance were used to assess the association between the exposure variables (oral health measures) and the outcome (happiness). Results The prevalence of happiness was 48.6%. A significant association between happiness and oral health, including satisfaction with dental appearance (PR 1.86; 95% CI 1.73-2.01), oral health-related to quality of life (PR 1.19; 95% CI 1.09-1.31), and halitosis (PR 1.10; 95% CI 1.01-1.20), was found. Abstract This study aimed to identify and characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of bacteria found in primary endodontic infections in the teeth of patients treated at the Dental Clinic of the University of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. From September to December 2019, samples were obtained from 21 patients with primary endodontic infections. The collections were carried out in triplicate using paper cones placed close to the total length of the root canal. Bacterial isolation was performed in Brain Heart Infusion agar, Blood agar, and other selective culture media cultured at 37°C for up to 48 h under aerobiosis and microaerophilic conditions. The bacterial species were identified using the Vitek 2 automated system. The disk diffusion method on agar Müeller–Hinton was used to assess antimicrobial susceptibility with the recommended antimicrobials for each identified bacterial species. A total of 49 antibiotics were evaluated. Fifteen of the 21 samples collected showed bacterial growth, and 17 bacterial isolates were found. There were 10 different bacterial species identified: Enterococcus faecalis (four isolates), Streptococcus mitis/oralis (three isolates), Streptococcus anginosus (three isolates) being the most common, followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus alactolyticus, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella variicola, and Providencia rettgeri (one isolate of each species). The analysis demonstrated significant susceptibility to most of the tested antibiotics. However, some Enterococcus isolates resisted the antibiotic’s erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline. A Staphylococcus epidermidis isolate was characterized as multidrug-resistant. Five Streptococcus isolates were non-susceptible to all antibiotics tested. Abstract Objective To review key evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral facial palsy in children and adults. Methods Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on peripheral facial palsy were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results The topics were divided into 2 main parts: (1) Evaluation and diagnosis of facial palsy: electrophysiologic tests, idiopathic facial palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, traumatic peripheral facial palsy, recurrent peripheral facial palsy, facial nerve tumors, and peripheral facial palsy in children; and (2) Rehabilitation procedures: surgical decompression of the facial nerve, facial nerve grafting, surgical treatment of long-term peripheral facial palsy, and non-surgical rehabilitation of the facial nerve. RESUMO Contexto: Associações específicas entre cirrose hepática ou transplante de fígado e piores desfechos na COVID-19 ainda não estão completamente claras. Objetivo: Nosso objetivo foi avaliar as características e desfechos clínicos de pacientes com COVID-19 grave e cirrose ou transplante de fígado em São Paulo, Brasil. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo observacional retrospectivo em um hospital quaternário. Foram selecionados pacientes com COVID-19 e cirrose hepática ou transplante de fígado. As características clínicas e demográficas, bem como os desfechos, foram avaliados por meio de prontuários eletrônicos. Resultados: Um total de 46 pacientes com COVID-19 e problemas hepáticos foram incluídos no estudo. Pacientes com cirrose hepática tiveram significativamente mais intubação endotraqueal e maior risco relativo de morte do que pacientes transplantados. Pacientes com pontuações MELD-Na mais altas apresentaram taxas de mortalidade aumentadas e menor probabilidade e tempo de sobrevivência. Conclusão: Pacientes com cirrose hepática, especialmente aqueles com escores MELD-Na mais elevados, tiveram piores desfechos na COVID-19. ABSTRACT Background: Specific associations between liver cirrhosis and liver transplant with poorer outcomes in COVID-19 are still not completely clear. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with severe COVID-19 and cirrhosis or liver transplant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in a quaternary hospital. Patients with COVID-19 and liver cirrhosis or liver transplant were selected. The clinical and demographic characteristics, as well as the outcomes, were assessed using electronic records. Results: A total of 46 patients with COVID-19 and liver condition were included in the study. Patients with liver cirrhosis had significantly more endotracheal intubation and a higher relative risk of death than liver transplant recipients. Patients with higher MELD-Na scores had increased death rates and lower survival probability and survival time. Conclusion: Patients with liver cirrhosis, especially those with higher MELD-Na scores, had poorer outcomes in COVID-19. Liver transplant recipients do not seem to be linked to poorer COVID-19 outcomes. The main objective of this paper is to produce an anodic layer of TiO2 rich in calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium using the anodizing technique known as micro-arc oxidation (MAO) on the Ti-25Ta alloy together with the incorporation of silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) metallic ions using different electrolytes. The structural changes and microstructures on the MAO surfaces were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical composition to verify whether silver, copper, and zinc were incorporated via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and surface characteristics such as wettability and hardness of the coatings were also investigated. From the EDS mapping results, it is observed that the MAO process was effective in incorporating the ions present in the electrolyte. Regarding X-ray diffraction patterns, the TiO2 phases formed in the Ti-25Ta alloy has a mixture of anatase and rutile, making the MAO surface hydrophilic. The Ag element surface is thicker than the films containing Cu and Zn, as the Ag ions have high electrical conductivity, accelerating the oxidation process during surface treatment. Regarding hardness, coating containing Cu have a higher hardness value. Abstract Chagas is an infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Nowadays, in Argentina vertical transmission is the main source of infection, which makes opportunistic diagnosis mandatory. The aim of this study was to analyse the epidemiological characteristics and follow-up of patients with suspected acute Chagas infection. An observational, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out. Medical records of patients with parasitemia test solicitude in the period between 2015 and 2022 were analysed, and results were registered, along with epidemiological background and if diagnosis algorithm were completed; 254 patients were analysed with a median age of 6 months: 22 patients were diagnosed with Chagas, 17 of whom had a vertical transmission, 1 was vertical/transplant transmission and there were 4 cases of vertical/vectorial transmission. Infection was ruled out in 126 patients, while in 99 children algorithm diagnosis was not completed. Seven patients were excluded from this study. Chagas was diagnosed in 8.7% of the patients studied and there was loss in follow-up in 36.2% of patients.

Abstract This paper proposes the verification of the model about author productivity proposed by Lotka, in its generalized form, for researchers of the National University of Asuncion who published between 2015 and 2020 in Paraguayan journals, collected in SciELO, in the areas of Medical and Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. A total of 627 documents included in 15 journal titles were collected. In the four areas studied, the adjustment of the authors’ production to Lotka’s postulate was verified, with a significant proportion of sporadic authors. The study demonstrates the possibility of testing the model in different scientific areas in a period of less than 10 years.

Resumen Este trabajo plantea la comprobación del modelo sobre productividad de los autores propuesto por Lotka. En su forma generalizada, para los investigadores de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción que publicaron entre los años 2015 y 2020 en revistas paraguayas recogidas en SciELO particularmente en las áreas de Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud, Ciencias Sociales, Ciencias Veterinarias y Agrícolas. Se recuperaron un total de 627 documentos incluidos en 15 títulos de revista. En las cuatro áreas de estudio se comprueba el ajuste de la producción de los autores al postulado de Lotka con una importante proporción de autores esporádicos. El análisis demuestra la posibilidad de comprobación del modelo en distintas áreas científicas en un periodo inferior a los 10 años.
