Abstract This study aimed to assess the influence of smoking on the subgingival metatranscriptomic profile of young patients affected by stage III/IV and generalized periodontal disease. Methodology In total, six young patients, both smokers and non-smokers (n=3/group), who were affected by periodontitis were chosen. The STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines for case-control reporting were followed. Periodontal clinical measurements and subgingival biofilm samples were collected. RNA was extracted from the biofilm and sequenced via Illumina HiSeq. Differential expression analysis used Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment, and differentially expressed genes were identified using the Sleuth package in R, with a statistical cutoff of ≤0.05. Results This study found 3351 KEGGs in the subgingival biofilm of both groups. Smoking habits altered the functional behavior of subgingival biofilm, resulting in 304 differentially expressed KEGGs between groups. Moreover, seven pathways were modulated: glycan degradation, galactose metabolism, glycosaminoglycan degradation, oxidative phosphorylation, peptidoglycan biosynthesis, butanoate metabolism, and glycosphingolipid biosynthesis. Smoking also altered antibiotic resistance gene levels in subgingival biofilm by significantly overexpressing genes related to beta-lactamase, permeability, antibiotic efflux pumps, and antibiotic-resistant synthetases. Conclusion Due to the limitations of a small sample size, our data suggest that smoking may influence the functional behavior of subgingival biofilm, modifying pathways that negatively impact the behavior of subgingival biofilm, which may lead to a more virulent community. Resumo Contexto Ainda são incomuns os estudos de prevalência de aneurismas viscerais raros, e os poucos estudos que focalizaram esses aneurismas observam taxas de prevalência em grupos de pacientes com aneurismas viscerais, mas pouco se conhece sobre a sua prevalência na população geral. Objetivos Avaliar a prevalência de aneurismas viscerais raros em angiotomografias realizadas para diagnóstico e seguimento de pacientes com diferentes patologias vasculares. Métodos Este estudo transversal partiu do acesso a todos os laudos de angiotomografias realizadas entre janeiro de 2005 e julho de 2021 em hospital privado de excelência situado na cidade de São Paulo. Foi utilizado um programa de mecanismo de busca de laudos pré-indexados, cuja base de dados é o Sistema de Informação Radiológica (RIS), para acesso aos laudos de pacientes com aneurismas intra-abdominais. Resultados Foram acessados laudos de angiotomografias de 92.883 pacientes, dos quais 2.597 (2,795%) apresentavam aneurismas intra-abdominais, sendo 937 (1,063%) viscerais, incluindo 158 (0,171%) aneurismas viscerais raros, mais frequente entre homens e nos seguintes segmentos: tronco celíaco (0,098%), artéria mesentérica superior (0,033%), artéria gástrica esquerda (0,010%), artéria pancreático-duodenal (0,009%), artéria gastroduodenal (0,005%) e arco pancreático (0,004%). Prevalências menores foram encontradas em outros diferentes segmentos. Achados adicionais revelaram taxa de concomitância de aneurismas viscerais raros com outros aneurismas intra-abdominais entre 11,11% e 66,67%. Abstract Background Studies on the prevalence of rare visceral aneurysms are still scarce and the few studies that have focused on these aneurysms present prevalence rates in groups of patients with visceral aneurysms, but little is known about their prevalence in the general population. Objectives To assess the prevalence of rare visceral aneurysms on CAT scans performed for diagnosis and follow-up of patients with other vascular pathologies. Methods This cross-sectional study began by accessing all reports from CAT scans performed between January 2005 and July 2021 at a private hospital of excellence located in the city of São Paulo. A software program for pre-indexed reports was used to search the Radiological Information System (RIS) database to identify reports of patients with intra-abdominal aneurysms. Results CAT scan reports from 92,883 patients were accessed. Of these, 2,597 (2.795%) showed intra-abdominal aneurysms, 937 (1.063%) of which were visceral, including 158 (0.171%) rare visceral aneurysms, which were more frequent among male patients and in the following segments: celiac trunk (0.098%), superior mesenteric (0.033%), left gastric (0.010%), pancreatic-duodenal (0.009%), and gastroduodenal arteries (0.005%) and the pancreatic arch (0.004%). Lower prevalence was found in other segments. Additional findings revealed concomitance of rare visceral aneurysms with other intra-abdominal aneurysms ranging from 11.11% to 66.67%. Abstract Although periodontal disease is common during pregnancy, little is known about socioeconomic, behavioral, or biological determinants related to clinically assessed periodontal condition during this period. We assessed the prevalence of periodontal disease and associated factors in pregnant women. This population-based survey used data used from the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study, Brazil. Pregnant women expected to give birth between December 2014 and May 2016 were interviewed and clinically examined by trained dentist, with periodontal measures collected in all teeth, six sites per tooth. Outcomes were periodontitis (using the 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology criteria) and gingivitis (by the 2018 European Federation of Periodontology/ American Academy of Periodontology classification). Multivariate hierarchical Poisson regression was used to assess the associations between socioeconomic, systemic, and clinical oral factors and periodontal disease. A total of 2,474 pregnant women participated in the study. Prevalence of periodontitis and gingivitis was 14.63% and 21.67%, respectively. Lower educational level and calculus were associated with higher prevalence periodontitis and gingivitis (P<0.05). Smoking was also associated with periodontitis (P=0.05), and lower frequency of toothbrushing (P=0.005) with gingivitis. Abstract Introduction Cleft lip and cleft palate can result in impairments in communication, specifically in hearing, making the use of technological resources such as blogs a fundamental guideline for health professionals. Objective The aim of this study was to prepare and analyze the access to a blog about cleft lip and cleft palate and hearing as a pedagogical tool for health professionals. Methods The first stage for the development of the blogwas the selection of the content that would be addressed and the respective illustrations. The second stage was making the blog available through theWordPress platform, and the third stage included the evaluation of the blog, of the access to theWordPress statistical features, and of the quality of the blog through the Emory questionnaire, which was answered by 75 professionals. Results The blog, titled “Fissure and Hearing”, was developed with the architecture of a digital information environment containing a system of organization, navigation, labeling and search (first stage). The address hosting the blog was: http://fissuraeaudicao. wordpress.com (second stage). The result of the third stage included 56,269 views of the blog from different countries, and Brazil was the country with the highest viewing. Regarding the assessment by the Emory questionnaire, we found that for most of the major issues, the percentages obtained were or equal to 90%, while the analysis of the scales, navigation and structure presented the lowest scores. Conclusion The blog was developed and enabled greater access to information available on the web about cleft lip and cleft palate and hearing.

This study aimed to investigate nurses' understanding regarding leadership, as well as the strategies used for facilitating its exercising in the hospital environment. It is research with a qualitative approach of the descriptive type, in which the case study was used as the investigative strategy. The participants were 25 nurses who worked in hospitals in Florianópolis, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The information were obtained between May and December 2010, through semi-structured interviews and dialogic workshops, and were analyzed using Thematic Analysis, with two themes emerging: 'The nurses' understanding regarding leadership', and 'Strategies which facilitate the exercising of leadership'. The results indicate that leadership is a relational skill which contributes to the management of the care, the team, and the hospital environment, being strengthened by dialogue as the main strategy facilitating and strengthening the exercising of the nurse's leadership.

Se objetivó conocer la comprensión de los enfermeros sobre liderazgo, así como las estrategias utilizadas que facilitan su ejercicio en el ambiente hospitalar. Se trata de una investigación de abordaje cualitativo del tipo descriptivo, en la cual fue usado el estudio de caso como estrategia de investigación. Participaron 25 enfermeros que trabajan en hospitales de Florianópolis, SC, Brasil. Las informaciones fueron obtenidas de mayo a diciembre de 2010, por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas y oficinas dialógicas, y analizadas por medio del Análisis Temático, resultando en dos temas: Comprensión de los enfermeros sobre liderazgo y Estrategias que facilitan el ejercicio de liderazgo. Los resultados apuntan que el liderazgo es una habilidad relacional que contribuyó para la gestión del cuidado, del equipo y del ambiente hospitalar, siendo potencializada por el diálogo como principal estrategia que facilita y fortalece el ejrcicio del liderazgo del enfermero.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa do tipo descritiva, na qual foi usado o estudo de caso como estratégia de investigação. Participaram 25 enfermeiros que trabalham em hospitais de Florianópolis-SC-Brasil. As informações foram obtidas de maio a dezembro de 2010, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturada e oficinas dialógicas, e analisadas por meio da Análise Temática, emergindo dois temas: Compreensão dos enfermeiros sobre liderança e Estratégias que facilitam o exercício da liderança. Os resultados sinalizam que a liderança é uma habilidade relacional que contribui para o gerenciamento do cuidado, da equipe e do ambiente hospitalar, sendo potencializada pelo diálogo enquanto principal estratégia que facilita e fortalece o exercício da liderança do enfermeiro.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a capacidade de concentração plaquetária e sua correlação com os níveis do fator de crescimento TGF-B1, a presença de leucócitos e de hemácias nos diferentes protocolos utilizados na obtenção do plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) de equinos, através do método manual. Dez equinos, sadios, com idade média de 7 anos (±2,39), pesando em média 500kg (±67,1) foram utilizados neste estudo. Os protocolos testados variaram na velocidade e no tempo nas duas centrifugações. As variáveis analisadas nas amostras de PRP foram: concentração de plaquetas, presença de leucócitos e hemácias, e níveis de TGF-β1 quantificados pelo teste ELISA. Os protocolos testados não diferiram na capacidade de concentração de plaquetas e nos níveis de TGF-β1. Entretanto, houve diferença significava entre o protocolo I e os demais por este apresentar maior número de hemácias e leucócitos nas amostras de PRP, sendo por esse motivo considerado um protocolo inadequado para processamento do volume de sangue utilizado. Os demais protocolos podem ser utilizados para obtenção de PRP terapêutico em equinos.

PRP is plasma that contains a high numbers of platelets and growth factors in a small volume. The aim of this study was to evaluate seven different protocols to obtain PRP by the manual method according to their capacity to concentrate platelets, leukocyte and erythrocyte contamination and correlation between platelet count and TGF-β1 growth factor levels in PRP samples. Ten healthy horses with a mean age of 7 years (±2.39), weighing on average 500 kg (±67.1) were used in this study. The protocols tested varied according to the speed and time used at the two centrifugations. PRP samples were analyzed regarding platelet concentration, leukocyte and erythrocyte contamination and TGF-β1 levels quantified by ELISA. No significant differences among protocols were observed regarding the ability to concentrate platelets and TGF-β1. However, protocol I showed significantly higher erythrocyte and leukocyte counts in PRP samples than the other protocols, reason why it was considered inadequate for the volume of blood processed in this experiment. The remaining protocols are suitable for extracting PRP.
