ABSTRACT: The study was conducted on a 3-year-old female Santa Inês sheep from a property located in the municipality of Santo Antônio de Tauá, west of Pará. The affected animal had a history of exophthalmos in the left eye, nasal discharge, and breathing difficulty for more than three months. On physical examination, the animal had a low body score, apathy, unilateral facial asymmetry, moderate unilateral left exophthalmos, mixed dyspnea and unilateral profuse serosanguinous nasal discharge. At necropsy, a large nasal mass was observed, predominantly yellowish-white with blackish-red areas, with an irregular, finely granular, moist, and friable surface. The mass invaded from the mucocutaneous junction of the left nostril to the choanae, infiltrated the frontal sinuses, the cribiform plate, and reached the meninges and the frontal portion of the brain. Microscopy of the surface of the nasal epithelium showed severe destruction of the turbinates and epithelia, evidenced by extensive areas of necrosis with a large amount of cellular debris, ulceration, and secondary bacterial infection. In the central nervous system there was pyogranulomatous meningitis with marked vessel congestion, as well as foci of necrosis and granulomatous inflammation. Immunohistochemistry showed intense staining of numerous intralesional hyphae for antibodies against Conidiobolus lamprauges. The diagnosis of granulomatous rhinitis of mycotic origin associated with the Conidiobolus lamprauges was based on epidemiological, clinical-pathological, and immunohistochemical data. RESUMO: O estudo foi realizado em um ovino, fêmea, de três anos de idade, da raça santa inês, procedente de uma propriedade localizada do município de Santo Antônio de Tauá, oeste do Pará. O animal acometido tinha histórico de exoftalmia no olho esquerdo, secreção nasal e dificuldade respiratória há mais de três meses. Resumen Los modelos de socialización de la niñez narrados en cuentos costarricenses del siglo XX posibilitan mostrar patrones culturales de socialización y su historicidad. La reflexión se orienta hacia la interrogante sobre cómo representa la narrativa costarricense nociones de niñez y modelos de socialización de la niñez en cuentos costarricenses de las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Con base en el análisis desde la Hermenéutica Profunda, se identificaron patrones de socialización, sobre todo de la niñez femenina, como recurso para intensificar el dramatismo de procesos sociales en boga durante la época que cubren. Los hallazgos se contrastan con premisas teóricas derivadas de estudios que tratan la historicidad de la niñez y los procesos socioculturales subyacentes. Los resultados develan una niñez ajena a procesos protagónicos en sus entornos de interacción sujeta a un control vertical ejercido por figuras de autoridad. Se tienden a sobrevalorar características deseables como la sumisión y la obediencia infantil y sobresale la carencia de la caracterización de un lugar social de la niñez con identidad propia. La noción de niñez es una metonimia que representa la calamidad y la decadencia, sin un auténtico cuestionamiento de su lugar sociofamiliar.

Abstract The models of childhood socialization narrated in Costa Rican tales of the 20th century make it possible to depict cultural patterns of socialization and their historicity. The reflection is oriented on the question of how the Costa Rican narrative represents notions of childhood and models of childhood socialization, in Costa Rican tales of the 20th century. The analysis from the in-depth Hermeneutics identified patterns of socialization, especially of female childhood, as a resource to intensify the drama of social processes in vogue during the time they cover. The findings are contrasted with theoretical premises derived from studies dealing with the historicity of childhood and the underlying sociocultural processes. The results reveal a childhood alien to leading processes in their interaction environments; subject to vertical control exercised by authority figures. Desirable characteristics such as child submission and obedience tend to be overestimated, and the lack of characterization of a social place in childhood with its own identity stands out. The notion of childhood is a metonymy that represents calamity and decadence, without a genuine questioning of its socio-familiar place.

ABSTRACT Despite being subject to lower AIDS-related mortality rates and having a higher life expectancy, patients with HIV are more prone to develop non-AIDS events. A low CD4+/CD8+ ratio during antiretroviral therapy identifies people with heightened immune senescence and increased risk of mortality. In clinical practice, finding determinants of a low CD4+/CD8+ ratio may be useful for identifying patients who require close monitoring due to an increased risk of comorbidities and death. We performed a prospective study on the evolution of the CD4+/CD8+ ratio in 60 patients infected with HIV (80% males), who were subjected to two different antiretroviral regimens: early and deferred therapy. The initial CD4+/CD8+ ratio was ≤1 for 70% of the patients in both groups. Older age, CD4+ cell count at inclusion, Nadir CD8+T-cell count, and Initial CD4+/CD8+ ratio ≤ 1 were risk factors for lack of ratio recovery. In the multivariate analysis, a CD4+/CD8+ ratio > 1 at the start of the treatment was found to be a determinant factor in maintaining a CD4+/CD8+ ratio > 1. The nadir CD4+T-cell count was lower in the deferred therapy group (p=0.004), and the last CD4+/CD8+ ratio ≤1 was not associated with comorbidities. Ratio recovery was not associated with the duration of HIV infection, time without therapy, or absence of AIDS incidence. A greater improvement was observed in patients treated early (p=0.003). In contrast, the slope of increase was slower in patients who deferred treatment. In conclusion, the increase in the CD4+/CD8+ ratio occurred mostly for patients undergoing early strategy treatment and its extension did not seem to be related to previous HIV-related factors. Abstract Salinity is a recurring abiotic stress in arid and semi-arid regions, which negatively affects the establishment and growth of plants, however, the cultivation of ornamental species such as celosia argentea can tolerate saline conditions. The objective of this work was to evaluate the emergence and seedling growth of Celosia argentea cultivated under different electrical conductivities of irrigation water. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in the month of July 2021. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replications. The treatments were five electrical conductivities of irrigation water (ECw), being: 0.5; 1.5; 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1. They were analysed the emergence variables (percentage of emergence, average emergence time, average emergence velocity and emergence velocity index) and the growth variables (seedling height, number of leaves, stem diameter, primary root length, shoot dry weight and root dry weight) at seedling start. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a emergência e o crescimento de plântulas de Celosia argentea cultivada sob diferentes condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no mês de julho de 2021. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. ABSTRACT Purpose: to map and synthesize scientific evidence on language functioning in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder Autism Spectrum Disorder. Methods: this scoping review aimed at mapping and synthesizing scientific evidence on language functioning in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A research question, article selection, and compilation of results were used as research strategies. The selection criteria were studies with samples of children and adolescents, addressing Autism Spectrum Disorder, speech-language-hearing therapy, communication, language, and functioning. After independent evaluators read the titles, keywords, abstracts, and full texts, they recorded the following data for the review: year of publication, type of study, country of origin, sample size, age of participants, instruments used, language subsystems assessed, and results. Literature review: the search found 1,056 articles, of which 536 were read in full, and 16 were included. There was great variability in assessment instruments and few studies involving adolescents. RESUMO Objetivo: mapear e sintetizar evidências científicas sobre a funcionalidade da linguagem em crianças e adolescentes com Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo. Métodos: trata-se de revisão de escopo com objetivo de mapear e sintetizar evidências científicas sobre a funcionalidade da linguagem em crianças e adolescentes com Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo. Como estratégia de pesquisa, utilizaram-se a pergunta norteadora, a seleção de artigos e compilação dos resultados. Os critérios de seleção foram: estudos com amostras de crianças e adolescentes que abordavam Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo, Fonoaudiologia, comunicação, linguagem e funcionalidade. Após leitura dos títulos, descritores e resumos por avaliadores independentes e leitura dos artigos na íntegra, os dados registrados para a revisão foram: ano de publicação, tipo de estudo, país de origem, tamanho amostral, idade dos participantes, instrumentos utilizados, subsistemas de linguagem avaliados e resultados. ABSTRACT Insects of the Ephemeroptera order have been used as bioindicators of water quality as they respond to countless anthropic impacts. In this study, we assessed the use of Ephemeroptera as bioindicators of streams impacted by agricultural activities. We collected Ephemeroptera nymphs in six streams with different uses and soil cover in their drainage areas located in the northern region of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Based on soil use and cover analysis, we categorized the streams as ‘natural’ (drainage area with >42% native arboreal vegetation) and ‘agricultural’ (drainage area with >72% agricultural use). We collected a total of 2,767 organisms, distributed into four families and eleven genera. We observed greater abundance (68%) and taxonomic richness (11 genera) of Ephemeroptera in the agricultural streams. The natural streams comprise 32% of the fauna collected, with eight genera. That pattern was especially determined by the Baetidae and Leptohyphidae families. The genera Caenis, Cloeodes, and Tricorythopsis were abundant in the agricultural streams. In this study, we observed that genera of Ephemeroptera are tolerant to environmental changes, particularly those caused by agricultural activities. RESUMO Insetos da ordem Ephemeroptera tem sido utilizado como bioindicadores de qualidade de água por responderem a inúmeros impactos antrópicos. Neste estudo avaliamos o uso dos Ephemeroptera como bioindicadores de riachos influenciados por atividades agrícolas. Coletamos ninfas de Ephemeroptera em seis riachos com diferentes usos e cobertura do solo em sua área de drenagem localizados na região norte do Rio Grande do Sul. A partir da análise do uso e cobertura do solo, categorizamos os riachos em ‘naturais’ (área de drenagem com >42% de vegetação arbórea nativa) e ‘agrícolas’ (área de drenagem com >72% de uso agrícola na área de drenagem). Coletamos um total de 2767 organismos, distribuídos em quatro famílias e 11 gêneros. Observamos maior abundância (68%) e riqueza taxonômica (11 gêneros) de Ephemeroptera nos riachos agrícolas. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Addressing secondary headaches in SARS-CoV-2 infection is crucial for effective management and care optimization. This review aims to synthesize data on headache characteristics and the impact of pre-existing headache conditions on these symptoms in SARS-CoV-2 infection. CONTENTS: A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Collaboration, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, Embase, Open Grey, and Google Scholar, to identify studies on headache characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2. The search focused on headache symptoms, characteristics, onset, duration, and response to treatment during and post-infection. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. Approximately 42.1% of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 reported headaches, resembling tension-type headaches and migraines. These headaches often manifested within the first three days of infection and could persist for up to four months. The data suggest that trigeminovascular activation and pro-inflammatory mediators play a significant role in headache pathogenesis, with pre-existing headache conditions exacerbating the symptoms. The importance of effective pain management strategies must be emphasized. CONCLUSION: Headache is a prevalent symptom among SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals, with significant implications for patient care. Esta revisão tem como objetivo sintetizar os dados sobre as características da cefaleia e o impacto das condições pré-existentes de cefaleia sobre esses sintomas na infecção pela SARS-CoV-2. Abstract Background: Tele-cardiology tools are valuable strategies to improve risk stratification. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of tele-electrocardiography (ECG) to predict abnormalities in screening echocardiography (echo) in primary care (PC). Methods: In 17 months, 6 health providers at 16 PC units were trained on simplified handheld echo protocols. Tele-ECGs were recorded for final diagnosis by a cardiologist. Consented patients with major ECG abnormalities by the Minnesota code, and a 1:5 sample of normal individuals underwent clinical questionnaire and screening echo interpreted remotely. Major heart disease was defined as moderate/severe valve disease, ventricular dysfunction/hypertrophy, pericardial effusion, or wall-motion abnormalities. Association between major ECG and echo abnormalities was assessed by logistic regression as follows: 1) unadjusted model; 2) model 1 adjusted for age/sex; 3) model 2 plus risk factors (hypertension/diabetes); 4) model 3 plus history of cardiovascular disease (Chagas/rheumatic heart disease/ischemic heart disease/stroke/heart failure). P-values < 0.05 were considered significant. Results: A total 1,411 patients underwent echo; 1,149 (81%) had major ECG abnormalities. Median age was 67 (IQR 60 to 74) years, and 51.4% were male. Major ECG abnormalities were associated with a 2.4-fold chance of major heart disease on echo in bivariate analysis (OR = 2.42 [95% CI 1.76 to 3.39]), and remained significant after adjustments in models (p < 0.001) 2 (OR = 2.57 [95% CI 1.84 to 3.65]), model 3 (OR = 2.52 [95% CI 1.80 to3.58]), and model 4 (OR = 2.23 [95%CI 1.59 to 3.19]). Métodos: Em 17 meses, 6 profissionais de saúde em 16 unidades de atenção primária foram treinados em protocolos simplificados de ecocardiografia portátil. Tele-ECGs foram registrados para diagnóstico final por um cardiologista. Pacientes consentidos com anormalidades maiores no ECG pelo código de Minnesota e uma amostra 1:5 de indivíduos normais foram submetidos a um questionário clínico e ecocardiograma de rastreamento interpretado remotamente. A doença cardíaca grave foi definida como doença valvular moderada/grave, disfunção/hipertrofia ventricular, derrame pericárdico ou anormalidade da motilidade. A associação entre alterações maiores do ECG e anormalidades ecocardiográficas foi avaliada por regressão logística da seguinte forma: 1) modelo não ajustado; 2) modelo 1 ajustado por idade/sexo; 3) modelo 2 mais fatores de risco (hipertensão/diabetes); 4) modelo 3 mais história de doença cardiovascular (Chagas/cardiopatia reumática/cardiopatia isquêmica/AVC/insuficiência cardíaca). Foram considerados significativos valores de p < 0,05. Resultados: No total, 1.411 pacientes realizaram ecocardiograma, sendo 1.149 (81%) com anormalidades maiores no ECG. A idade mediana foi de 67 anos (intervalo interquartil de 60 a 74) e 51,4% eram do sexo masculino. As anormalidades maiores no ECG se associaram a uma chance 2,4 vezes maior de doença cardíaca grave no ecocardiograma de rastreamento na análise bivariada (OR = 2,42 [IC 95% 1,76 a 3,39]) e permaneceram significativas (p < 0,001) após ajustes no modelo 2 (OR = 2,57 [IC 95% 1,84 a 3,65]), modelo 3 (OR = 2,52 [IC 95% 1,80 a 3,58]) e modelo 4 (OR = 2,23 [IC 95% 1,59 a 3,19]). Idade, sexo masculino, insuficiência cardíaca e doença cardíaca isquêmica também foram preditores independentes de doença cardíaca grave no ecocardiograma. Conclusões: As anormalidades do tele-ECG aumentaram a probabilidade de doença cardíaca grave no ecocardiograma de rastreamento, mesmo após ajustes para variáveis demográficas e clínicas. RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: O tipo de questionário que pretende captar a percepção/visão de um paciente sobre um aspecto a ser medido (ex: intensidade da dor) é chamado de Instrumento de Medida Baseado no Relato do Paciente (Patient Reported Outcome Measure - PROM). Um dos maiores desafios que clínicos e pesquisadores costumam enfrentar é quanto a tomar uma decisão sobre qual PROM utilizar para a avaliação de seu paciente com dor, especialmente devido à falta do letramento científico necessário para entender os critérios e termos empregados na área de propriedades de medida. Assim, os objetivos deste estudo (parte I) foram: (I) introduzir conceitos básicos sobre PROMs com enfoque na terminologia e critérios definidos através do COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN), e (2) descrever as propriedades de medida do domínio confiabilidade. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The type of questionnaire that aims to capture a patient’s perception/view of an aspect to be measured (e.g. pain intensity) is called Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM). One of the biggest challenges that clinicians and researchers often face is making a decision about which PROM to use for the assessment of their patient with pain, especially due to the lack of scientific literacy needed to understand the criteria and terms used in the field of measurement properties. Thus, the objectives of this narrative review (part I) were: (I) to introduce basic concepts about PROMs with a focus on the terminology and criteria defined through the COnsensus- based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN), and (2) to describe the measurement properties of the reliability domain. METHODS: This study was produced using a search for articles from the COSMIN initiative. As the subject is very extensive, the authors divided the text into two parts. Resumo Objetivo: Verificar a relação entre a presença de proteinúria como marcador de lesão renal em idosos sem histórico de hipertensão arterial sistêmica e doenças cardiovasculares. Um estudo transversal foi desenvolvido de Janeiro de 2014 a Dezembro de 2019, por meio de campanhas de prevenção a doenças renais promovidas pela Universidade Federal do Ceará, na cidade de Fortaleza. Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 417 idosos. Um questionário foi usado para caracterizar indivíduos e avaliar doenças prévias, e foram utilizadas tiras reagentes de urinálise para avaliar proteinúria. Resultados: Diferenças estatisticamente significativas (p < 0,05) e tamanhos de efeito moderados foram encontrados para níveis de pressão arterial (IC 0,53-0,93), pressão arterial sistólica e pressão arterial diastólica (IC 0,21-0,61). Também foram encontradas diferenças significativas na glicemia capilar entre grupos (p = 0,033), mas com um tamanho de efeito baixo (0,02–0,42). O grupo com comorbidades apresentou 2,94 vezes mais probabilidade de ter proteinúria do que aqueles sem comorbidades (OR 2,94; IC 1,55-4,01; p < 0,05). No grupo sem doença cardiovascular/hipertensão, foi encontrada uma associação estatisticamente significativa para diabetes anterior e proteinúria (p = 0,037), apresentando risco 2,68 vezes maior de proteinúria naqueles com diabetes mellitus (OR 2,68; IC 1,05-6,85). Também foi encontrada uma associação significativa entre faixas etárias, com o grupo mais velho apresentando risco 2,69 vezes maior de desenvolver proteinúria (75 a 90 em comparação com 60 a 74 anos) (IC 1,01-7,16; p = 0,045). ABSTRACT Objective: To verify the relationship between the presence of proteinuria as a renal injury marker in elderly without history of systemic arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. A cross-sectional study was developed from January 2014 to December 2019, through kidney disease prevention campaigns promoted by the Federal University of Ceará in the city of Fortaleza. Methods: The sample consisted of 417 elderlies. A questionnaire was used to characterize individuals and assess previous diseases, and urinalysis reagent strips were used to assess proteinuria. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) and moderate effect sizes were found for blood pressure levels (CI 0.53-0.93), systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure (CI 0.21-0.61). Significant differences in capillary glycemia were also found between groups (p = 0.033), but with a low effect size (0.02–0.42). The group with comorbidities was 2.94 times more likely to have proteinuria than those without comorbidities (OR 2.94, CI 1.55-4.01; p < 0.05). In the group without cardiovascular disease/high blood pressure, a statistically significant association was found for previous diabetes and proteinuria (p = 0.037), presenting 2.68 times higher risk of proteinuria in those with diabetes mellitus (OR 2.68, CI 1.05-6.85). Significant association was also found between age groups, with the older group having 2.69 times higher risk of developing proteinuria (75 to 90 compared to 60 to 74 years) (CI 1.01-7.16; p = 0.045). Conclusion: Even without systemic arterial hypertension or cardiovascular disease, diabetes and older age can be considered high risk factors for proteinuria. RESUMO A afasia progressiva primária (APP) é um distúrbio progressivo da linguagem associado à atrofia de regiões frontotemporais predominantemente do hemisfério esquerdo do cérebro. De modo geral, a APP afeta as capacidades compreensivas e expressivas da linguagem. O diagnóstico depende de profissionais com profundo conhecimento das funções da linguagem, neurologia e neuropsicologia. A fonoaudiologia tem papel essencial no diagnóstico e reabilitação da APP, e a ausência de fonoaudiólogos nesses processos pode refletir na qualidade do cuidado das pessoas com APP. Objetivo: Identificar as características sociodemográficas, educacionais e de atuação profissional de fonoaudiólogos que atuam com APP no Brasil. Métodos: Foi distribuído um questionário em formato online para fonoaudiólogos de todo o Brasil. O questionário coletou informações sobre aspectos sociodemográficos, de formação, atuação profissional (tempo, local de atuação, tipo de serviço oferecido) e fontes de encaminhamento. Resultados: O estudo incluiu 71 participantes (95,8% mulheres). O nível educacional mais frequente foi a especialização, e as regiões demográficas com maior incidência de profissionais que atendiam APP foram as Regiões Sudeste e Sul do país. Os neurologistas foram os profissionais que mais encaminhavam pacientes com APP para os fonoaudiólogos. Por fim, os fonoaudiólogos atuavam, principalmente, em homecare e realizando, em sua maioria, terapia individual. ABSTRACT Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a progressive language disorder associated with frontotemporal impairment and mainly affects the left hemisphere of the brain. In general, this condition compromises abilities related to comprehension and expression of language. The diagnosis of PPA depends on in-depth knowledge regarding functions of language, neurology, and neuropsychology. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) have a pivotal role in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of PPA. The absence of these professionals involved in the diagnosis and rehabilitation may reflect on the quality of care of people with PPA. Objective: To identify the sociodemographic, educational, and professional practice characteristics of SLTs who work with people with PPA in Brazil. Methods: An online questionnaire was disseminated to reach SLTs across Brazil. The questionnaire collected information regarding sociodemographics, training and education, practice (time, setting, service provision), and sources of referral. Results: The study included 71 participants (95.8% women). Specialization was the most frequent educational level followed by master’s degree, and participants where mainly from the Southeast and South regions of Brazil. Neurologists were the professionals who most referred patients with PPA to SLTs. Finally, SLTs worked primarily in homecare settings and provided mainly individual therapy services. Conclusion: SLTs who work with PPA in Brazil can be characterized mainly as professionals with postgraduate degrees, relatively young, and from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. RESUMO Estudos sobre o uso de óleo essencial de Piper aduncum L. (OEPA) como sinérgico em pragas de grãos armazenados ainda são incipientes. Objetivou-se determinar a toxicidade de deltametrina e OEPA, bem como estudar o efeito da mistura binária de OEPA + deltametrina, em cinco populações brasileiras de Sitophilus zeamais. A toxicidade foi investigada com base em dados de concentração-mortalidade de deltametrina e OEPA em treze populações de S. zeamais. A população padrão de suscetibilidade de ¼ CL20 foi utilizada com as combinações de deltametrina para gerar concentrações letais capazes de causar mortalidade de 50 e 95 % (CL50 e CL95). Uma mistura binária de OEPA x deltametrina também foi testada em cinco populações de S. zeamais para detectar o efeito sinérgico com a deltametrina. As curvas concentração-mortalidade foram geradas e os valores de toxicidade residual após 24 h de exposição variaram 0,003-0,08 µL cm-2 para deltametrina, 0,04-2,038 µL cm-2 para OEPA e 0,0016-0,014 µL cm-2 para a mistura binária. As populações de S. zeamais apresentaram toxicidade desigual em resposta à deltametrina. ABSTRACT Researches on the use of essential oil of Piper aduncum L. (EOPA) as a synergist in stored grain pests are still incipient. This study aimed to determine the toxicity of deltamethrin and EOPA, as well as to study the effect of the binary mixture of EOPA + deltamethrin, on five Sitophilus zeamais Brazilian populations. The toxicity was investigated based on concentration-mortality data from deltamethrin and EOPA in thirteen S. zeamais populations. The standard susceptibility population of ¼ LC20 was used with the deltamethrin combinations to generate lethal concentrations capable of causing 50 and 95 % of mortality (LC50 and LC95). A binary mixture of EOPA x deltamethrin was also tested in five S. zeamais populations to detect the synergistic effect with the deltamethrin. The concentration-mortality curves were generated, and the residual toxicity values after 24 h of exposure ranged 0.003-0.08 µL cm-2 for deltamethrin, 0.04-2.038 µL cm-2 for EOPA and 0.0016-0.014 µL cm-2 for the binary mixture. The S. zeamais populations showed an uneven toxicity in response to the deltamethrin. The Jacarezinho (Paraná state) population showed resistance, with toxicity ratios for LC50 increasing by 3.06 and 4.13 times, when compared to susceptible populations, for EOPA and deltamethrin, respectively. The Barbacena (Minas Gerais state) population was considered as the susceptibility standard in the EOPA toxicity bioassays. The mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana, Linn.) is a tropical fruit cultivated in the tropical forests of Southeast Asian countries. It is recognized as the queen of fruits due to its unique color, aroma, and flavor. It has been used for centuries in Southeastern Asian traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. Many functional molecules with high medicinal value are obtained from the pericarp of mangosteen fruit, whose major constituent is xanthone α-mangostin. Several studies have been carried out over the last decades to further investigate and understand the pharmacological properties associated with the plant and its main chemical constituents, belonging to the class of xanthones. In addition, numerous in vitro and in vivo studies related to mangosteen have been published, indicating its importance and its potential application in medicinal chemistry. ABSTRACT Background: Leprosy is a neglected chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, that is curable. The magnitude of the disease and severity of the debilitation it causes renders leprosy a public health problem. This study aimed to analyze the endemic profile of leprosy in the Murrupula district and evaluate the socioeconomic, clinical, and serological profiles of leprosy contacts. Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients with leprosy diagnosed between 2013 and 2017 and their household and community contacts was conducted in Murrupula District, Nampula Province, Mozambique. Interviews, simplified dermatoneurological examinations, Mycobacterium leprae flow (ML Flow) tests, and Mitsuda tests were performed. Results: Most of the leprosy cases were multibacillary. The patients had some degree of physical disability. ML Flow positivity was more common in household contacts of the patients diagnosed with leprosy and in community individuals who spontaneously presented for testing. In total, 17 patients were diagnosed with leprosy. Conclusions: This study revealed an active chain of transmission, hidden prevalence, and operational deficiencies in leprosy surveillance and care. The results suggest that the implementation of a public health policy for leprosy prevention and control in Nampula Province is necessary. In future, the possibility of expanding the policy to the entire country should be considered.
