Resumo Neste artigo, apresentamos cinco cartas escritas pela Câmara de São Luís do Maranhão ao antigo governador do Estado do Maranhão e Grão-Pará, em finais do século XVII. Por meio dessa correspondência, os camaristas buscavam obter o favor do antigo governador, Gomes Freire de Andrade, junto à Coroa, sobre assuntos atinentes ao governo local, como a questão da mão de obra e problemas fiscais. As cartas revelam a importância da comunicação política e das relações construídas entre autoridades locais e indivíduos de prestígio na Corte para negociar com o poder real.

Abstract In this article, we introduce five letters written, in the late seventeenth century, by the municipal Council of São Luís do Maranhão, in colonial northern Brazil, to a former governor of the region. Through their correspondence, the councillors strove to gain the governor’s favour to intervene in the Court on issues related to the local government, such as the question of labour force and fiscal problems. The letters make clear the importance of political communication and the relationship established between local authorities and influential individuals in the Court to negotiate with royal power.

Resumo Durante a maior parte do século XVII, a comunicação entre o Estado do Maranhão e o Estado do Brasil foi limitada pela inexistência de um caminho estável por via terrestre. Nas últimas duas décadas desse século, os governadores do Maranhão trataram de melhorar essa comunicação com a exploração das regiões interiores e a abertura de um caminho baseado no conhecimento dos povos indígenas que ali moravam. Com esse fim, organizaram-se expedições de reconhecimento e ativaram-se diferentes estratégias para o controle do território, tais como o descimento dos indígenas e o uso da guerra justa. Este artigo estuda esses projetos a partir da documentação colonial. Leva em conta a influência dos índios na transformação das fronteiras coloniais e as motivações que os administradores tiveram para esse empreendimento, até a virada do século XVIII.

Abstract Communication between the State of Maranhão and the State of Brazil was limited for most of the seventeenth century by the inexistence of a road by land. In the last two decades of this century, the governors of Maranhão tried to improve this communication by exploring the interior regions and by opening a path based on the knowledge of the indigenous peoples that lived there. For such purpose, expeditions were organized and different strategies for territorial control were activated, such as the descent of indigenous peoples and war. Based on colonial documentation, this article studies these projects, addressing questions about the influence of Indians on the transformation of colonial boundaries and the motivations that authorities had for this endeavor, up to the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Resumo Este artigo tem por tema a questão da terra e os índios na Amazônia, de meados do século XVII a meados do século XVIII. O objetivo é discutir os processos de expropriação ensejados pela conquista europeia, pensados no tempo e no espaço, e refletir como, para além desta perspectiva, é preciso entender de que maneira os índios coloniais buscaram construir espaços de autonomia por meio da agricultura. Trata-se de mostrar que, se a colonização implicou um processo de apagamento dos espaços e das práticas agrícolas indígenas, os índios conseguiram construir novas práticas ou legitimar novos espaços de produção agrícola, no interior do próprio mundo colonial.

Abstract This article addresses the question of land and the Indians in the Amazon region, during the colonial period spanning the mid-seventeenth century to the mid-eighteenth century. The objective is to discuss the processes of expropriation derived from the European conquest, considered in terms of time and space, and also to reflect on how, beyond the perspective of expropriation, one must understand how the colonial Indians sought to carve out spaces of autonomy through agriculture. Here we show that while colonization eliminated indigenous agricultural spaces and practices, the Indians developed new practices and legitimized new spaces of agricultural production within the colonial world.

Este artigo examina o processo de expansão portuguesa pelos sertões orientais da capitania do Maranhão e pela capitania do Piauí nas primeiras décadas do século XVIII, procurando explicar as conexões entre as guerras contra os índios daquela região, a expansão do gado e os interesses principalmente dos governadores do Estado do Maranhão e Pará.

This article examines the Portuguese expansion towards the eastern hinterlands of the captaincies of Maranhão and Piauí, in eighteenth-century Portuguese America. It focuses on the relationship between the many wars against the Indians of this region, the spread of cattle ranching and the personal and political interests of the governors of the State of Maranhão and Pará.

Este artigo apresenta uma discussão sobre a organização da força de trabalho indígena livre na Amazônia colônia do século XVII a meados do século XVIII. O texto argumenta que, para além do rígido controle exercido pelas ordens religiosas sobre a população indígena livre estabelecida nas aldeias, não só a coroa vislumbrou alternativas quanto ao uso de trabalhadores indígenas, mas também os moradores se aproveitaram dessas alternativas para ter acesso aos trabalhadores indígenas, principalmente em momentos críticos de carência de mão-de-obra. Por outro lado, trata-se de compreender como a ação dos próprios grupos indígenas influenciou a política e legislação indigenistas implementadas pela Coroa para a região.

This article analyses the organization of Indian free labour in the Portuguese Amazon region, during the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth century. It argues that, besides the tight control that the religious orders exerted over the Indian free population established in the aldeias, not only the Crown advanced alternatives to the use of free Indian labour, but also the Portuguese settlers took advantage of these legal options to gain access to Indian workers, especially when they experienced shortage of labourers. It also asserts that Indian agency was crucial to understand how a policy and legislation towards the Indian nations were implemented in the region.

Analisa em que medida epidemias de varíola e de sarampo ensejaram transformações nas formas de aquisição e uso de força de trabalho na Amazônia colonial, de meados do século XVII a meados do século XVIII, com o incremento de descimentos privados de índios e a tentativa de organização de uma rota de tráfico negreiro para a região. Trata igualmente de entender como a mortandade de indígenas significou, no fim do século XVII, uma preocupação com a defesa da região e motivou o recrutamento de soldados da Madeira.

The text analyzes the extent to which smallpox and measles epidemics provoked transformations in the ways in which workforces were acquired and used in colonial Amazonia from the mid-seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century, with an increase in slave raids on the indigenous population and the attempt to organize a trade route in African slaves to the region. It also explores how indigenous mortality rates at the end of the seventeenth century led to a concern with the region's defence and prompted the recruitment of soldiers from the Madeira islands.

Este artigo analisa as características peculiares do tráfico negreiro para a Amazônia (Estado do Maranhão) do século XVII e início do século XVIII. Para isso destaca três elementos que permitem entender a organização e o estabelecimento de uma rota escrava para o Estado do Maranhão: as epidemias, a delicada situação da Fazenda real e os problemas decorrentes do uso de trabalhadores indígenas.

This article analyses the specific features of the slave trade to the Amazon region (State of Maranhão) in the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth centuries. In order to understand the organization and establishment of slave trade routes to the State of Maranhão, it stresses the role played by three key elements: the epidemics of smallpox, the delicate financial situation of the royal Treasury and the extensive use of Indian labour force in the region.
