Two poly(acrylic acid-b-acrylamide) copolymers, and a poly(acrylic acid) homopolymer were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and tested for nickel removal from aqueous media. RAFT was used for better interchain composition homogeneity and to facilitate the synthesis of the block copolymers. Liquid-phase polymer-based retention (LPR) was used to compare the nickel binding capacity. Uptake tests were carried out at pH 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0. Nickel adsorption isotherms in the range of 1 to 7 mmol L−1 were achieved and the Langmuir adsorption model was applied. Maximum binding capacity (Qm) of Ni2+ at 298 K depended on the composition of the copolymers and pH. The polyacid block (PAA) was the major structural feature responsible for high values of nickel binding. All materials presented better uptake at higher pH, probably due to polyacid deprotonation and the increase in the electrostatic interactions. Up to approximately 100 mg of nickel per gram of homopolymer could be retained at pH = 5.0. This study analyzed federal government management of the National Policy for Comprehensive Men's Health Care (PNAISH) from a critical historical perspective. We analyzed documents addressing the policy implementation process between 2009 and 2024 contained in the archives of the National Office for the Coordination of Men’s Healthcare (COSAH). The content analysis resulted in the following thematic categories: COSAH organization and management; the PNAISH review process; and challenges and key strategic areas for implementing the PNAISH. We found weaknesses in the institutionalization of coordination, in addition to a policy review in 2021 marked by neoconservative discourse excluding gender and sexual and reproductive rights. These epistemological principles of the PNAISH were revisited in 2023, stemming from actions to improve the quality of primary care addressing the effects of machismo and patriarchy on men’s, women’s and children’s health. Abstract The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the preference index (IP) and synchrony (IS) of forage species from Baja California Sur. Samples of the 23 forage species of trees and shrubs were obtained to perform in situ digestibility analyzes using four Creole-Nubian goats. Collections were carried out in winter and spring of 2004, and summer and autumn of 2005. The extent of degradation per hour and total of 24 h was calculated from the amount of OM and PC degraded per hour; these data were used to calculate the IS. The seasonal PI data set was obtained from previously published information. A logistic regression model was used to explain the probability of occurrence of the IP with the IS. The regression model to explain the IP from the IS was significant and predictive for six species, being positive for Adelia virgata, Amaratus palmeri, Haematoxilon brasiletto, Lippia palmeri and Prosopis sp., and negative for Bursera microphyla. For other tree species and legumes in general, the model was significant, but not predictive, therefore, it is necessary to include other factors to fit the model.

Resumen El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la relación existente entre el índice de preferencia (IP) y sincronía (IS) de especies forrajeras de Baja California Sur. Se obtuvieron muestras de las 23 especies forrajeras de árboles y arbustos para realizar análisis de digestibilidad in situ utilizando para ello cuatro cabras con encaste de criollas-Nubio. Se llevaron a cabo colecciones en invierno y primavera del 2004 y verano y otoño de 2005. La extensión de degradación por hora y total de 24 h se calculó a partir de la cantidad de MO y PC degradados por hora; estos datos se utilizaron para calcular el IS. El conjunto de datos del IP estacional se obtuvo de información publicada previamente. Se utilizó un modelo de regresión logística para explicar la probabilidad de ocurrencia del IP con el IS. El modelo de regresión para explicar el IP a partir del IS fue significativo y predictivo para seis especies, siendo positiva para Adelia virgata, Amaratus palmeri, Haematoxilon brasiletto, Lippia palmeri y Prosopis sp., y negativa para Bursera microphyla. Para otras especies arbóreas y las leguminosas en general, el modelo fue significativo, pero no predictivo, por lo tanto, es necesaria incluir otros factores para ajustar el modelo.

Abstract In this work we present the first results of prospective and stratigraphic studies in a new archaeological locality located in Paso Gregores (lower basin of the Deseado River, province of Santa Cruz). It is an intermediate space between the sea coast and the interior plateaus of the Deseado Massif. Various archaeological contexts were recorded, among which the rock shelters with the presence of rock art stand out. The locality has an interesting interpretative potential regarding discussions related to the initial settlement and the breadth of the ranges of action of the human groups that occupied the area during the middle and late Holocene. The new evidence of occupation recorded about 50 km from the Atlantic coast, near the limit of the marine influence of the Deseado estuary, is framed in a scenario suitable for discussing the implications of the coast-inland connections and vice versa. The survey of rock paintings, with similar characteristics to sites located to the west, added to their absence on the marine coast, suggests that the occupations in the Paso Gregores Locality would have been structured around ranges of mobility associated with the interior territory, in relationship with the exploitation of guanacos and local raw materials.

Resumen En este trabajo presentamos los primeros resultados de estudios prospectivos y estratigráficos en una nueva localidad arqueológica emplazada en Paso Gregores (cuenca inferior del río Deseado, provincia de Santa Cruz). Se trata de un espacio intermedio entre el litoral marino y las mesetas interiores del Macizo del Deseado. Se registraron variados contextos arqueológicos, entre los que se destacan los abrigos rocosos con presencia de arte rupestre. La localidad posee un interesante potencial interpretativo respecto de discusiones relacionadas con el poblamiento inicial y la amplitud de los rangos de acción de los grupos humanos que ocuparon el área durante el Holoceno medio y tardío. Las nuevas evidencias de ocupación registradas a unos 50 km de la costa atlántica, en cercanías del límite de la influencia marina de la ría Deseado, se enmarcan en un escenario apto para discutir las implicancias de las conexiones costa-interior y viceversa. El relevamiento de pinturas rupestres, con características similares respecto de sitios emplazados hacia el oeste, sumado a su ausencia en el litoral marino, sugiere que las ocupaciones en la Localidad Paso Gregores se habrían estructurado en torno a rangos de movilidad asociados al territorio interior, en relación con la explotación de guanacos y materias primas locales.

ABSTRACT. Oreochromis niloticus is the most important aquacultural species worldwide. Several countries are interested in repopulating natural or artificial reservoirs with the fry of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) to develop new fisheries or to enhance the existing ones. However, as tilapia is considered an invasive species, it is essential to check the existence of the species in the place before releasing any fry. Characterization of tilapia species with meristic is unreliable because of existing morphological similarities among species. In this work, the composition of the tilapia species of Laguna El Mastranzo (LEM), Nayarit, Mexico, was explored for the first time through a molecular method using the mitochondrial DNA control region. Three tilapia species (Oreochromis niloticus, O. aureus, and O. urolepis) were found in LEM, and it was confirmed that the two commercial strains (Aquamol and Spring) intended for repopulation were O. niloticus. Seven haplotypes of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were obtained: three in LEM, three in Aquamol, and one in Spring strains. Before repopulating any reservoir, a molecular verification strategy is recommended to avoid spreading the species. The results of this work represent a glimpse into the genetic material of LEM, Nayarit, Mexico.

Resumo Introdução: Nonagenários constituem um percentual de pacientes internados em ascensão, sendo a injúria renal aguda (IRA) frequente nesses pacientes. Sendo assim, é importante analisar as características clínicas dessa população e seu impacto na mortalidade. Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo de pacientes nonagenários com IRA entre 2013 e 2022 em um hospital terciário. Apenas o último internamento foi considerado e pacientes com dados incompletos foram excluídos. Uma análise por regressão logística foi realizada para definir fatores de risco para mortalidade. Um valor de p < 0,05 foi considerado significativo. Resultados: Foram incluídos 150 pacientes com mediana de idade 93,0 anos (91,2–95,0) e sexo masculino em 42,7%. Sepse foi a causa mais comum de IRA (53,3%), seguida de desidratação/hipovolemia (17,7%) e insuficiência cardíaca (17,7%). Admissão na UTI ocorreu em 39,3% dos pacientes, ventilação mecânica em 14,7%, uso de vasopressores em 22,7% e realização de terapia renal substitutiva (TRS) em 6,7%. Óbito ocorreu em 56,7% dos pacientes. Desidratação/hipovolemia como etiologia da IRA foi associado a menor risco de mortalidade (OR 0,18; IC 95% 0,04–0,77, p = 0,020). Abstract Introduction: Nonagenarians constitute a rising percentage of inpatients, with acute kidney injury (AKI) being frequent in this population. Thus, it is important to analyze the clinical characteristics of this demographic and their impact on mortality. Methods: Retrospective study of nonagenarian patients with AKI at a tertiary hospital between 2013 and 2022. Only the latest hospital admission was considered, and patients with incomplete data were excluded. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to define risk factors for mortality. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 150 patients were included, with a median age of 93.0 years (91.2–95.0), and males accounting for 42.7% of the sample. Sepsis was the most common cause of AKI (53.3%), followed by dehydration/hypovolemia (17.7%), and heart failure (17.7%). ICU admission occurred in 39.3% of patients, mechanical ventilation in 14.7%, vasopressors use in 22.7% and renal replacement therapy (RRT) in 6.7%. Death occurred in 56.7% of patients. Dehydration/hypovolemia as an etiology of AKI was associated with a lower risk of mortality (OR 0.18; 95% CI 0.04–0.77, p = 0.020). KDIGO stage 3 (OR 3.15; 95% CI 1.17–8.47, p = 0.023), ICU admission (OR 12.27; 95% CI 3.03–49.74, p < 0.001), and oliguria (OR 5.77; 95% CI 1.98–16.85, p = 0.001) were associated with mortality. Abstract Background: Utricularia jamesoniana, a small epiphytic plant found in wet tropical forests, stands out for its carnivorous habit, intricate trap system, and small but beautiful and complex flowers. This species remains relatively understudied despite its wide geographical distribution and curious adaptations. Questions: Our aim is to elucidate the composition of bacterial and fungal communities inhabiting both the bladders and leaves of Utricularia jamesoniana, facilitating the comprehension of the physiology and ecological dynamics of this carnivorous species. Methods: In this study, we employed 16S rRNA and ITS sequencing to compare the prokaryotic and fungal communities within leaves and traps of U. jamesoniana. Results: The analysis of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) unveiled notable differences in community composition depending on the plant tissue and type of microorganism. Prokaryotic communities predominantly comprised Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota, featuring genera such as Acidocella, Bradyrhizobium, Ferritrophicum, and Ferrovum. Fungal communities were dominated by Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, encompassing representatives of Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, and Agaricomycetes, as well as ASVs related to Mycosphaerellaceae, Colletotrichum, Aspergillus, and Thanatephorus. We determined that the prokaryotic diversity was higher in the bladders with respect to the leaves. Fungal communities, in turn, were more diverse in leaves than in bladders. Conclusions: This study sheds light on the microbial communities associated with this carnivorous epiphyte and provides valuable insights into the intricate relationships between the plant and its microbial inhabitants across different tissues.

Resumen Antecedentes: Utricularia jamesoniana es una pequeña planta epífita que se encuentra en bosques tropicales húmedos. Destaca por su hábito carnívoro, su intrincado sistema de trampas y sus pequeñas pero complejas flores. A pesar de su amplia distribución geográfica y sus curiosas adaptaciones, esta especie sigue estando relativamente poco estudiada. Objetivo: Nuestro objetivo es dilucidar la composición de las comunidades bacterianas y fúngicas asociadas tanto en los utrículos como en las hojas de Utricularia jamesoniana, facilitando la comprensión de la fisiología y la dinámica ecológica de esta especie carnívora. Métodos: Empleamos la secuenciación de los marcadores 16S ARNr e ITS para comparar las comunidades procariotas y fúngicas dentro de hojas y trampas de U. jamesoniana. Resultados: El análisis de las variantes de secuencia de amplicones (ASVs) reveló notables diferencias en la composición de la comunidad dependiendo del tejido vegetal y del tipo de microorganismo. Las comunidades procariotas estaban compuestas predominantemente por Proteobacteria y Actinobacteriota, incluyendo los géneros Acidocella, Bradyrhizobium, Ferritrophicum y Ferrovum. Abstract (Introduction): The productive capacity of a forest plantation depends mainly on the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, as well as the necessary silvicultural management for optimal tree development. (Objective): The objective of this research was the evaluation of the effect of fertilization on clonal forest plantations of Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm. 3 years old, in the North and South Pacific of Costa Rica. (Methodology): The study was carried out in 2 experimental trials of the Forestry Research and Services Institute located in La Esperanza, Cóbano (trial 1) and in Rancho Quemado, Drake Bay (trial 2). Five complete blocks were established at random with four fertilization treatments with the fertilizer 19-4-19-2-0.1(B)-1.8(S)-.1(Zn). An analysis of variance and comparison of means of the mean annual increments of DBH, height and total volume of the trees was carried out, using the Tukey test. (Results): The results show that the site with the highest natural fertility presents a greater growth of the trees, however, there are no statistically significant differences between all the treatments applied. The site with the lowest natural fertility is located in Bahía Drake and it did present statistically significant differences in some treatments in terms of total volume. (Conclusions): Continuous fertilization have a positive impact on the dasometric growth in G. arborea plantations that present low calcium contents (< 4.5 cmol L-1), low values of effective cation exchange capacity (<7.8 cmol L-1) and high acidity saturation (> 19.4 %).

Resumen (Introducción): La capacidad productiva de una plantación forestal depende principalmente de las características fisicoquímicas del suelo, así como del manejo silvicultural necesario para un óptimo desarrollo de los árboles. (Objetivo): El objetivo de esta investigación fue la evaluación del efecto de la fertilización sobre plantaciones forestales clonales de Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm., de tres años, en el Pacífico Norte y Sur de Costa Rica. (Metodología): El estudio se realizó en 2 ensayos experimentales del Instituto de Investigación y Servicios Forestales ubicados en La Esperanza, Cóbano (ensayo 1) y en Rancho Quemado, Bahía Drake (ensayo 2). Se establecieron 5 bloques completos, al azar, con 4 tratamientos de fertilización con el abono 19-4-19-2-0,1(B)-1,8(S)-,1(Zn). Se realizó un análisis de varianza y comparación de medias de los incrementos medios anuales del DAP, la altura y el volumen total de los árboles utilizando la prueba de Tukey. (Resultados): Los resultados muestran que el sitio con mayor fertilidad natural presenta aumento en el crecimiento de los árboles; sin embargo, no existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre todos los tratamientos aplicados. El sitio de menor fertilidad natural se ubica en Bahía Drake y presentó diferencias estadísticamente significativas en algunos tratamientos en términos de volumen total. (Conclusiones): La fertilización continua tienen un impacto positivo en el crecimiento dasométrico en plantaciones de G. arborea que presenten bajos contenidos de calcio (< 4.5 cmol L-1), valores bajos en capacidad de intercambio catiónico efectiva (< 7.8 cmol L-1) y alta saturación de acidez (> 19.4 %).

RESUMO Processo de salinização do solo afeta negativamente o crescimento e o rendimento de culturas economicamente valiosas, como a soja. Com o objetivo de minimizar os danos causados pelo estresse salino e melhorar o desempenho das culturas, novas tecnologias estão sendo desenvolvidas. Neste contexto, o uso de bioestimulantes na agricultura pode oferecer uma alternativa para mitigar os efeitos deletérios da salinidade. O extrato da alga Ascophyllum nodosum e substâncias húmicas (ácidos fúlvicos) são comumente empregados. Portanto, o estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ação de um bioestimulante composto pelo extrato da alga marinha A. nodosum e ácidos fúlvicos aplicados em diferentes estádios fenológicos sobre parâmetros biométricos, bioquímicos e fisiológicos da soja (Glycine max) submetida à irrigação com água salina. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3 x 2 + 2, referente a três aplicações do bioestimulante em diferentes estádios fenológicos da soja: V3, V3R1 e V3R1R4, dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa): 0,5 (S0) e 5,0 dS m-1 (S1), dois controles adicionais, um com controle positivo (PC) e outro com controle negativo (NC). O experimento contou com cinco repetições e uma planta por parcela. ABSTRACT Soil salinization negatively affects the growth and yield of economically valuable crops such as soybeans. New technologies are being developed to minimize the damage caused by saline stress and improve crop performance. Therefore, the use of biostimulants in agriculture may offer an alternative method to mitigate the deleterious effects of salinity. Extracts of the seaweed, Ascophyllum nodosum and humic substances (fulvic acids) are commonly used. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the action of a biostimulant composed of A. nodosum seaweed extract and fulvic acid applied at different phenological stages on the biometric, biochemical, and physiological parameters of soybeans (Glycine max) subjected to irrigation with saline water. RESUMO Materiais híbridos formados entre polianilina e hidróxidos duplos lamelares de Zn e Al (Pani/ZnAlHDL) foram obtidos adicionando a Polianilina (Pani) previamente preparada ao meio reacional da síntese dos HDLs e também HDLs modificado com os surfactantes aniônicos dodecilsulfato de sódio e dodecilbenzenosulfato de sódio. Os compósitos apresentaram cor azul que é característica da fase base esmeraldina da Pani. Os difratogramas de raios X destes compostos apresentaram deslocamento dos picos (003) e (006) do ZnAlHDL para menores valores de 2θ, indicando a presença das duas fases nos compósitos. Além disso, foi constatado também que os surfactantes aniônicos também exercem influência nas características estruturais dos compósitos. Os espectros de FTIR corroboram os resultados do DRX. Os compósitos obtidos com os surfactantes foram submetidos à testes de sensor colorimétrico para HCl. ABSTRACT Hybrid materials formed between polyaniline and layered double hydroxides of Zn and Al (Pani/ZnAlHDL) were obtained by adding previously prepared polyaniline (Pani) to the reaction medium during the synthesis of the HDLs, including HDLs modified with the anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate. The composites exhibited a blue color characteristic of the emeraldine base phase of Pani. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of these compounds showed a shift of the peaks (003) and (006) of ZnAlHDL to lower 2θ values, indicating the presence of both phases in the composites. Additionally, it was observed that the anionic surfactants also influence the structural characteristics of the composites. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra support the XRD results. Composites obtained with surfactants were subjected to colorimetric sensor tests for HCl. After only 5 minutes of exposure to HCl vapors, the materials changed their color from blue to green, indicating the formation of the Pani emeraldine salt phase. Resumo A região sul do Brasil é rica em recursos hídricos e biogeográficos, contribuindo para a formação de nichos ictiofaunísticos distintos facilitando o isolamento de algumas espécies. Apesar da grande importância ecológica, existem poucos estudos citogenéticos e moleculares sobre a ictiofauna dessas bacias. Por isso, espécimes de Ancistrus abilhoai e Hemiancistrus fuliginosus foram analisados através da combinação de marcadores citogenéticos e mitocondriais. A análise citogenética revelou um número diploide de 2n = 48 para A. abilhoai e 2n = 56 para H. fuliginosus e foram identificados sítios de DNAr (por hibridização in situ fluorescente-FISH) com sondas 18S e 5S, em sintonia no par 16 de A. abilhoai, enquanto em H. fuliginosus estes sítios estão localizados em pares separados. Abstract The southern region of Brazil is rich in hydric and biogeographic resources, contributing to the formation of distinct ichthyofaunistic niches and facilitating the isolation of some species. Despite the great ecological importance, there are few cytogenetic and molecular studies on the ichthyofauna of these basins. Therefore, specimens of Ancistrus abilhoai and Hemiancistrus fuliginosus were analyzed by combining cytogenetic and mitochondrial markers. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a diploid number of 2n = 48 for A. abilhoai and 2n = 56 for H. fuliginosus and Sites rDNA (by fluorescent in situ hybridization-FISH) were identified with 18S and 5S probes in synteny in pair 16 of A. abilhoai. At the same time in H. fuliginosus, these sites are located in separate pairs. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar as taxas de aleitamento materno exclusivo e o crescimento dos recém-nascidos (RN) pré-termo e/ou de baixo peso ao nascer à alta da terceira etapa do Método Canguru (TEMC). Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo realizado em maternidade pública de referência entre janeiro/2014 e dezembro/2017, que incluiu os RN pré-termo (<37 semanas) e/ou de baixo peso (<2.500 g). As informações foram coletadas de prontuários médicos e analisadas pelo programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Resultados: Foram seguidos 482 RN, com mediana da idade gestacional de 33 semanas (variação: 24–39 sem) e peso ao nascer 1.715 g (variação: 455–2.830 g). O aleitamento materno exclusivo (AME) ocorreu em 336 (70,1%) RN à alta hospitalar e em 291 (60,4%) à alta da TEMC. Cada dia a mais de permanência hospitalar aumentou a chance do uso de fórmula infantil em 9,3% à alta hospitalar e em 10,3% à alta da TEMC. Permanecer na Unidade de Cuidados Intermediários Canguru (UCINCA) favoreceu o AME à alta hospitalar e da TEMC (p<0,001). Não realizar a Posição Canguru aumentou em 11% a chance de o RN utilizar fórmula infantil à alta hospitalar. O ganho de peso e crescimento do perímetro cefálico foram maiores nos RN em uso de fórmula infantil (p<0,001). Objective: To evaluate the rates of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and growth of preterm and/or low birth weight newborns during the third stage of the Kangaroo Method (TSKM), at discharge. Methods: Retrospective study in a reference public maternity hospital between Jan/2014 and Dec/2017, including the preterm (less than 37 weeks) and/or low birth weight (less than 2500 g) newborn infants. Information was collected from medical records. Statistics analysis was done in SPSS software. Results: 482 infants were included and followed up at the TSKM ambulatory. The average gestational age was 33 weeks (variation: 24-39 weeks) and birth weight, 1715g (variation: 455–2830 g). EBF occurred in 336 (70.1%) infants at hospital discharge, and in 291 (60.4%) at TSKM discharge. Each additional day of hospital stay increased the chance of infant formula (IF) use by 9.3% at hospital discharge and by 10.3% at TSKM discharge. Staying in the Kangaroo Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (KNICU) favored EBF at hospital discharge and TSKM discharge (p<0.001). Not performing the kangaroo position increased the chance formula administration to the newborn infant at hospital discharge by 11%. ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the economic viability of the implementation of a mechanized harvesting of broilers where the activity is carried out entirely manually. The viability indicators used were net present value (NPV), net future value (NFV), net uniform value (NUV), discounted payback (DP), and internal rate of return (IRR). Scenario analysis, sensitivity, and Monte Carlo simulation were performed in the present study. The results showed that the initial investment was US$ 1,868,302.76. The average price paid by the slaughterhouse to third-party manual harvesting companies was US$ 18.17 per thousand broilers, which was converted into revenue in the cash flow of the project. The cash flow result was positive at US$ 22,256.14 over the entire study period considering a daily catch of 144 thousand broilers. The results of the economic viability analysis were NPV of US$ 64,786.23, NFV of US$ 333,382.11, NUV of US$ 735.19, DP of 13.82 years, IRR of 0.965 monthly, and modified IRR of 0.933 monthly. These values prove the economic viability of implementing the project considering the market conditions at the time of the study. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência de miopia em crianças de escolas públicas da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre (RS, Brasil). Métodos: Estudo transversal prospectivo, com amostra de 330 estudantes de escolas públicas da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre entre 5 e 20 anos de idade. Os escolares foram submetidos à avaliação oftalmológica completa, incluindo acuidade visual com e sem correção, autorrefração dinâmica e estática, refração subjetiva dinâmica e estática sob cicloplegia e medida do diâmetro axial. Um questionário sobre tempo de uso de telas diário foi aplicado. Os desfechos foram prevalência de miopia, alta miopia e baixa miopia. O teste do qui-quadrado de Pearson foi utilizado para avaliar a relação da prevalência com a variável contemplada no questionário. Resultados: A prevalência de miopia foi de 17,4% (IC95% 13,8-21,7%). Baixa e alta miopia corresponderam a 15,2% (IC95% 11,9-19,3%) e 2,1% (IC95% 1,1-4,1%), respectivamente. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess myopia prevalence in children from public schools of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul. Methods: It is a prospective cross-sectional study with a sample of 330 children from public schools of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, from 5 to 20 years old. The students were submitted to an ophthalmological evaluation including auto-refractor measurements, best corrected and uncorrected visual acuity, subjective refraction under cycloplegia and axial length. The outcomes were prevalence of myopia, high myopia, and low myopia. Pearson's chi-squared test was used to assess the relationship between prevalence and the variable contemplated in the questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of myopia was 17.4% (CI 13.8 – 21.7%). Low and high myopia corresponded to 15.2% (CI 11.9 – 19.3%) and 2.1% (CI 1.1 – 4.1%), respectively. Conclusion: This is the highest prevalence of myopia under cycloplegia found in Brazil to date. RESUMO Este estudo investiga a calibração do coeficiente de decaimento de cloro nas paredes das tubulações (Kw), um parâmetro essencial para garantir a precisão dos modelos de qualidade da água em redes de distribuição. A metodologia desenvolvida aplica dois métodos baseados em redes neurais artificiais (RNAs): um que calibra Kw para grupos de tubulações semelhantes (RNA-G) e outro que realiza a calibração individualmente para cada trecho (RNA-T). Esses métodos foram testados e validados em diferentes cenários, variando tanto na quantidade de dados observados quanto na faixa de variação do parâmetro usada para a geração dos dados de treinamento e teste dos modelos. Os resultados indicaram que o RNA-G apresentou menor erro em cenários com dados observados limitados, destacando-se como uma solução eficiente para calibração em contextos de baixa disponibilidade de dados. Em contrapartida, a abordagem de calibração por trecho demonstrou maior potencial em cenários em que o modelador tem uma ampla gama de informações sobre as tubulações e as concentrações de cloro nos nós da rede. ABSTRACT This study investigates the calibration of the chlorine wall decay coefficient (Kw) in pipelines, a crucial parameter for ensuring the accuracy of water quality models in distribution networks. The developed methodology applies two methods based on artificial neural networks (ANNs): one that calibrates Kw for groups of similar pipelines (group-based ANN (G-ANN)) and another that performs individual calibration for each segment (segment-based ANN). These methods were tested and validated in different scenarios, varying both in the amount of observed data and in the parameter variation range used for generating the training and testing data. The results indicated that G-ANN presented lower error in scenarios with limited observed data, emerging as an efficient solution for calibration in contexts with low data availability. In contrast, the segment-based calibration approach showed greater potential in scenarios where the modeler has a wide range of information about the pipelines and chlorine concentrations at network nodes.
