Summary: The fraction of vegetation cover (FVC) and the Leaf Area Index (LAI) are biophysical variables closely related to the evapotranspiration rate of crops and their biomass production. Despite their importance, they are usually not measured directly due to their time-consuming and costly nature; however, they can be estimated on a large scale and near-real-time using spectral information captured in satellite images, although this requires prior validation at the field level. Simple linear regression models were developed and validated using 13 vegetation indices (VI) related to LAI and FCV in alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Three spectral information sources were used: (i) reflectance to derive the VI; (ii) digital photographs processed with the Canopeo application to estimate FVC; and (iii) direct LAI measurements using a ceptometer. Six field samples were taken between March and June, 2020 in four alfalfa plots located in Palmar de Bravo, Puebla, Mexico. To evaluate each VI, the determination coefficient (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) were used. We found that the most suitable VI for estimating FVC was the VIgreen (Green Vegetation Index, R2 =0.987 and RMSE = 0.093). For the LAI, the VI that performed best was the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, R2 = 0.935 and RMSE = 0.746). The results showed the suitability and practical utility of spectral information for estimating biophysical variables in alfalfa cultivation and their monitoring.

Resumen: La fracción de cobertura vegetal (FCV) y el índice de área foliar (IAF) son variables biofísicas relacionadas estrechamente con la tasa de evapotranspiración de los cultivos y su producción de biomasa. A pesar de su importancia, usualmente no se miden de manera directa debido al tiempo invertido y costo; sin embargo, se pueden estimar a gran escala y en tiempo casi real mediante información espectral captada en imágenes de satélite, pero esto requiere de su validación a nivel de campo. Se desarrollaron y validaron modelos de regresión lineal simple utilizando 13 índices de vegetación (IV) relacionados con el IAF y la FCV en alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Se usaron tres fuentes de información espectral: (i) La reflectancia para derivar los IV; (ii) fotografías digitales procesadas con Canopeo para estimar la FCV; y (iii) mediciones del IAF utilizando un ceptómetro. Se realizaron seis muestreos de campo entre marzo y junio de 2020, en cuatro parcelas de alfalfa situadas en Palmar de Bravo, Puebla, México. Para evaluar cada IV, se utilizó el coeficiente de determinación (R2) y la raíz del cuadrado medio del error (RCME). Se encontró que el IV más apropiado para estimar la FCV fue el VIgreen (Green Vegetation Index, R2 = 0.987 y RCME = 0.093). En el caso del IAF, el IV que presentó el mejor desempeño fue el Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), R2 = 0.935 y RCME = 0.746). Los resultados mostraron la aptitud y utilidad práctica de la información espectral para estimar las variables biofísicas en el cultivo de alfalfa y su monitoreo.

Summary: In recent decades, water scarcity has increased considerably in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua - the most important apple-growing region of Mexico. Thus, the objective of this research is focused on evaluating growth and development responses in apple rootstocks graf ted with Golden Delicious subjected to four drought cycles, comparing them with the continuous irrigation treatment. Ten rootstocks were evaluated (B.9, M.9Nic29, G.41, G.202, G.890, G.210, G.30, M.7, MM.111 and MM.109) used in the commercial apple orchards in the area, where all the rootstocks were obtained during the 2020 growing season. The planting was carried out in 20-L pots in March 2020 and a substrate composed of compost, soil and sand was used in a ratio of 1:1:1. The recorded variables measured were moisture percentage in the soil, the leading branch growth, leaf water potential, total biomass, and ef ficient water use. The rootstocks B.9 and M.9 Nic29 showed good results in most of the variables studied. Rootstocks with good recovery of leaf water potential af ter recovery irrigation were found. These rootstocks were; B.9, M.9Nic29, MM.111 and G.210. The total biomass was statistically the same in G.30, G.41, MM.111, MM.109, G.202 and B.9. In conclusion, rootstocks tolerate a certain degree of drought and can contribute to improving water use, highlighting B.9.

Resumen: La escasez de agua en la región manzanera más importante de México; Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, se ha incrementado considerablemente en las últimas décadas. El objetivo de esta investigación se concentró en evaluar la respuesta en crecimiento y desarrollo de portainjertos de manzano injertados con Golden Delicious, sometidos a cuatro ciclos de sequía, comparándolos con el tratamiento de riego continuo. Se evaluaron 10 portainjertos (B.9, M.9Nic29, G.41, G.202, G.890, G.210, G.30, M.7, MM.111 y MM.109), los cuales son utilizados en las huertas comerciales de manzano de la zona de Cuauhtémoc. Todos los portainjertos se obtuvieron de viveros comerciales durante la estación de crecimiento 2019. La plantación se realizó en macetas de 20 L en el mes de marzo de 2020 y se utilizó un sustrato compuesto por composta, suelo y arena en proporción 1:1:1. Las variables registradas fueron; porcentaje de humedad en el suelo, crecimiento de la rama líder, potencial hídrico de la hoja, biomasa total, y uso eficiente del agua. Los portainjertos B.9 y M.9Nic29 mostraron buenos resultados en la mayoría de las variables estudiadas. Los portainjertos B.9, M.9Nic29, MM.111 y G.210 mostraron buena recuperación del potencial hídrico de la hoja después del riego de recuperación. La biomasa total fue estadísticamente igual en G.30, G.41, MM.111, MM.109, G.202 y B.9. Se concluye que existen portainjertos que toleran cierto grado de sequía y que pueden contribuir a mejorar el uso del agua, destacando B.9.

ABSTRACT In response to global concerns over food scarcity, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its rich composition of carbohydrates (starch), protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This study aims to assess the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional content of different sweet potato landraces cultivated in Yucatan, Mexico. The study involved the evaluation of eight landraces of sweet potato cultivated in traditional farming systems, assessing both physicochemical and proximate composition variables, and determining the starch yield, starch color, protein content, swelling degree, and starch solubility index. The sweet potato landraces showed values ranging from acidic to slightly neutral pH (6-6.4). The yellow sweet potato II, purple sweet potato, and pink sweet potato landraces displayed high levels of total soluble solids with a range of 12.5 to 14.33 °Brix. Significant differences were observed in both peel and root pulp coloration. The pink, yellow, purple I, mamey, yellow II, and purple sweet potato landraces, presented elevated percentages of carbohydrates (85.0% to 89.0%), fats (1.1% to 1.5%), protein (3.5% to 5.1%), fiber (4.0% to 5.0%), and ash (3.5% to 4.0%). The mamey sweet potato and pink sweet potato landraces showed higher starch yields. Swelling power and starch solubility index peaked at a temperature of 90 °C. These results highlight the significance of sweet potato landraces cultivated in Yucatan as a valuable genetic resource with nutritional potential, which can be included in the diet of people, genetic improvement and species conservation programs.

Resumen En este trabajo se evalúa la eficiencia técnica (TE) en la producción de riego de tres cultivos: maíz, alfalfa, sorgo y plátano. Se analiza esa eficiencia en tres subregiones hidrológicas de México: Río San Juan (norte), Valle de México (centro) y Valle Bajo de Grijalva (Sur). La medición se realizó por ciclo agrícola (primavera-verano, otoño-invierno y perenne), y por tamaño de parcela. Se utilizó el análisis de frontera estocástica para probar si las habilidades del agricultor favorecen la eficiencia, con una función de producción que relaciona la tierra irrigada como elemento básico y un conjunto de variables explicativas socioeconómicas. Pese a limitaciones en los datos, los resultados contribuyen al conocimiento de TE en la agricultura de México. Indirectamente se reconoce la contribución de las áreas de riego, por lo que identificar su relevancia en términos económicos podría ayudar a definir estrategias para mejorar la producción agrícola y apoyar la gestión del agua en la agricultura.

Abstract This work assesses the technical efficiency (TE) in agricultural production under irrigation of corn, alfalfa, sorghum, and plantain; the analysis is conducted for three hydrological subregions of Mexico: Río San Juan (north), Valley of Mexico (center) and Valle Bajo de Grijalva (South). The measurement was carried out by agricultural cycle (spring-summer, autumn-winter and perennial), and by land size. We use stochastic frontier analysis to corroborate whether the farmer’s skills favor efficiency, with a production function that relates irrigated land as a basic element, and a set of explanatory socioeconomic variables. Despite limitations in the data, the results contribute to the knowledge of TE in Mexican agriculture. Indirectly, the contribution of irrigation is recognized, so identifying their economic relevance could help define strategies to improve agricultural production and support water management in agriculture.

ABSTRACT Forage soybean (Neonotonia wightii) is a legume frequently used as a cover crop in field crops. However, as a species of the Phaseoloideae subfamily, it is characterized by the physical latency of the seed, which makes it difficult to obtain a high, homogeneous, and rapid germination. The aim of the present study was to determine which method of scarification stimulates the germination process to a greater extent. The following immersion times were evaluated: 5 to 20 minutes in 98% sulfuric acid, 24 hours in 5.4% sodium hypochlorite, water, and gibberellic acid [100 ppm], 15 minutes of treatment with sandpaper and the combination of these last two. They were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, where eight treatments and a control were evaluated, with three replicates each and 200 seeds as experimental units, subjected to controlled conditions (germination chambers at constant temperatures and a relative humidity of 27 °C and 70%, respectively) during the spring of 2022. The results were favorable, a high germination percentage was obtained from seeds subjected to a 20-minute immersion time in sulfuric acid (90% germination and an average of six germinated seeds per day) and this was significantly higher than the rest, making it an effective method to break the physical latency of the seeds, as it removes the impermeable cover allowing inhibition and consequently the activation of the seed's metabolism.

RESUMEN La soja forrajera (Neonotonia wightii) es una leguminosa frecuentemente utilizada como cubierta en cultivos de campo. Sin embargo, al ser una especie de la subfamilia Phaseoloideae, se caracteriza por la latencia física de la semilla, lo que dificulta obtener una germinación alta, homogénea y rápida. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar cuál método de escarificación estimula en mayor medida el proceso de germinación, se evaluaron tiempos de inmersión desde los 5 hasta los 20 minutos en ácido sulfúrico (98%), 24 horas en inmersión en hipoclorito de sodio (5,4%), agua y ácido giberélico [100 ppm], 15 minutos con lija y el combinado de estas dos últimas, las cuales fueron distribuidas en un diseño experimental completamente al azar, donde se evaluaron ocho tratamientos y un testigo, tres repeticiones cada uno y 200 semillas como unidades experimentales, sometidas en condiciones controladas (cámaras de germinación a temperaturas y humedad relativa constantes de 27 °C y 70%, respectivamente) durante la primavera del 2022. Los resultados fueron favorables, un alto porcentaje de germinación se obtuvo de las semillas sometidas a un tiempo de inmersión de 20 minutos en ácido sulfúrico (90% de germinación y un promedio de germinación de seis semillas germinadas por día) y fue significativamente mayor que el resto. Este método resulta efectivo para romper la latencia física de las semillas, debido a la remoción de la cubierta impermeable, permitiendo la inhibición en agua y consecuentemente la activación del metabolismo de la semilla.

Resumen Las orquídeas son un grupo diverso de plantas, manifestado además en su gran diversidad de flores. A pesar de esto, las orquídeas son polinizadas ya sea mediante autogamia o alogamia (geitonogamia y xenogamia). Si bien existen algunas orquídeas autógamas, la mayoría son alógamas, principalmente polinizadas por xenogamia, ya que presentan barreras físicas o genéticas que evitan la autopolinización. Además, las orquídeas son conocidas por su capacidad de polinización interespecífica, la cual podría influenciar la producción de frutos (metaxenia) y de semillas (xenia). Su capacidad de hibridación representa una oportunidad para producir organismos tolerantes a estrés biótico o abiótico, además de exhibir nuevas formas, colores y fragancias; esto sería importante en horticultura, donde la selección adecuada de los parentales proporciona esas ventajas a los híbridos descendientes. En esta revisión se abordan las características de cada tipo de sistema de reproducción en orquídeas, así como sus ventajas y desventajas. A su vez, se propone el estudio del efecto de inducción de metaxenia y xenia en esta familia. Finalmente, se contextualiza la producción de híbridos de orquídeas, y las oportunidades de este enfoque en el futuro próximo.

Abstract Orchids are a diverse group of plants, also manifested in their great diversity of flowers. Despite this, orchids are pollinated either through autogamy or allogamy (geitonogamy and xenogamy). Although there are some autogamous orchids, the majority are allogamous, mainly pollinated by xenogamy since they present physical or genetic barriers that prevent self-pollination. In addition, orchids are known for their capacity for interspecific pollination, which could influence fruits (metaxenia) and seeds (xenia) production. Its capacity for hybridization represents an opportunity to produce organisms tolerant to biotic or abiotic stress, in addition to exhibiting new shapes, colors and fragrances; this would be important in horticulture, where the proper selection of parents provides those advantages to the descendant hybrids. This review addresses the characteristics of each type of reproduction systems in orchids, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. At the same time, the study of the induction effect of metaxenia and xenia in this family is proposed. Finally, the production of orchid hybrids is contextualized and the opportunities of this approach in the near future.

Abstract Introduction. The objective of this study was to compare the short-term outcomes of laparoscopic gastrectomy in adults vs. older patients with locally advanced gastric cancer from a Western country cohort. Methods. Prospective cohort study in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy for locally advanced gastric cancer at the Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz, de Cúcuta, Colombia, between November 2014 and December 2018. Descriptive, group comparison and bivariate analysis was performed. Results. Of a total of 116 patients, 51 patients (44%) were 65 years or older and 63 patients (54%) were men. No statistically significant difference was found when comparing patients under 65 years of age with those 65 years of age or older. The median operating time was 240 minutes in both groups (p>0.05), the median macroscopic resection margins were 6 cm vs. 5 cm (p>0.05), the median number of lymph nodes dissected was 25 vs. 19 (p>0.05), the median number of positive lymph nodes was 4 vs. 3 (p>0.05), the median stay was 7 days in both groups (p>0.05). The overall rate of postoperative complications did not differ significantly between adults (7%) and older adults (11%) (p>0.05) and no significant differences were observed in the rates of minor (Clavien-Dindo grade II; 3-5% vs. 6-12%; p>0.05) and severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIa; 3-5% vs. 4-8%; p>0.05). Conclusions. No statistically differences were found in short-term outcomes between adult and older patients with locally advanced gastric cancer treated with laparoscopic gastrectomy. This technique is safe in the elderly.

Resumen Introducción. El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar los desenlaces a corto plazo de la gastrectomía laparoscópica en adultos vs. adultos mayores con cáncer gástrico localmente avanzado en una cohorte de un país occidental. Métodos. Estudio de cohorte prospectivo en pacientes sometidos a gastrectomía laparoscópica por cáncer gástrico localmente avanzado, en el Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz, de Cúcuta, Colombia, entre noviembre de 2014 y diciembre de 2018. Se realizó análisis descriptivo, de comparación de grupos y bivariado. Resultados. De un total de 116 pacientes, 51 pacientes (44 %) tenían 65 años o más y 63 pacientes (54 %) eran hombres. No se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa al comparar los pacientes menores de 65 años con los de 65 años o más. La mediana del tiempo operatorio fue de 240 minutos en ambos grupos (p>0,05), la mediana de los márgenes de resección macroscópica fue 6 cm vs. 5 cm (p>0,05), la mediana de los ganglios linfáticos disecados fue 25 vs. 19 (p>0,05), la mediana de ganglios linfáticos positivos fue 4 vs. 3 (p>0,05), la mediana de estancia fue de 7 días en ambos grupos (p>0,05). La tasa general de complicaciones posoperatorias no difirió significativamente entre adultos (7%) y adultos mayores (11 %) (p>0,05) y no se observaron diferencias significativas en las tasas de complicaciones menores (Clavien-Dindo grado II; 3-5 % vs. 6-12 %; p>0,05) y graves (Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIa; 3-5 % vs. 4-8 %; p>0,05). Conclusiones. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los resultados a corto plazo entre los pacientes adultos y adultos mayores con cáncer gástrico localmente avanzado tratados con gastrectomía laparoscópica. Esta técnica es segura en ancianos.

Resumen Las organizaciones están integrando cada vez más cuestiones ambientales en sus planes estratégicos. Así, esta investigación analiza cómo la estrategia de negocios sustentable (GBS, por sus siglas en inglés) y la responsabilidad social corporativa (CSR, por sus siglas en inglés) impactan en el rendimiento financiero (FP, por sus siglas en inglés). Además, se analiza el rol mediador de la CSR en la relación entre la GBS y el FP. El estudio empírico utiliza el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales en una muestra de 300 empresas manufactureras de México. Los resultados muestran relaciones positivas y significativas entre la GBS, la CSR y el FP, mientras que también se verificó el papel mediador significativamente positivo de la CSR. Por lo tanto, los objetivos ambientales establecidos por la GBS contribuyen al FP de las empresas manufactureras mexicanas. La CSR también colabora en este sentido, pero solo parcialmente al mediar la relación entre la GBS y el FP. Los hallazgos respaldan la importancia de incorporar cuestiones ambientales en la planeación estratégica de las empresas para garantizar no solo beneficios económicos, sino también sociales a través de las actividades de GBS y CSR.

Abstract Organizations are increasingly integrating environmental concerns in their strategic plans. This research analyzes how green business strategy (GBS) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) impact financial performance (FP). In addition, we analyze the mediating role of CSR in the relationship between GBS and FP. The empirical application uses structural equation modeling on a sample of 300 manufacturing firms from Mexico. The results show positive and significant relationships between GBS, CSR and FP, while the significantly positive mediating role of CSR was also verified. Thus, the environmental objectives set by the GBS contribute to the FP of Mexican manufacturing firms. CSR also collaborates to this end but only partially by mediating the relationship between GBS and FP. The findings support the importance of incorporating environmental concerns in businesses' strategic planning in order to ensure not only economic but also social benefits through GBS and CSR activities.

Abstract The city of Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila is characterized by having criollo avocado trees with different morphological properties. However, very little information is available on their fruit nutritional and sensory characteristics. The objective of this work was to perform the bromatological, mineral, phytochemical and sensory characterization of 7 avocado landraces. The proximal analysis was carried out using standardized tests by the AOAC (2019), while the phytochemical content was determined using HPLC/MS equipment. Subsequently, the samples were evaluated using a hedonic test. The bromatological analysis showed significant differences in the total of the samples for the different response variables, which indicates the great genetic diversity among the sampled trees. The mineral that were determined in the highest concentration were Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium. Thirty-eight different phytochemical compounds were identified in the fruits, with a greater presence of flavones. While the sensory analysis showed a significant difference among the avocado landraces for the evaluated attributes. The flavor and texture attributes were the most important for the consumer preference. Different environmental factors (soil, climate, altitude, latitude, maturity) modify the nutritional composition of the avocado and its organoleptic characteristics. The results of this work may help propagation, fruit diversification and development of companies focused on this fruit in Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila.

Resumen La ciudad de Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila, se caracteriza por tener árboles de aguacate criollo con diferentes propiedades morfológicas. Sin embargo, es muy poca la información que se tiene sobre las características nutrimentales y sensoriales de los frutos de estos árboles. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar bromatológica, mineral, fitoquímica y sensorial 7 aguacates criollos, obtenidos de diferentes árboles. El análisis proximal se realizó mediante pruebas estandarizadas por la AOAC (2019), mientras que el contenido de fitoquímicos se determinó en un equipo HPLC/MS. Posteriormente, las muestras se evaluaron mediante una prueba hedónica. El análisis bromatológico arrojó diferencias significativas en el total de las muestras para las diferentes variables de respuesta, lo que indica la gran diversidad genética entre los árboles muestreados. Los minerales que se determinaron en mayor concentración fueron Potasio, Magnesio y Calcio. Se identificaron 38 compuestos fitoquímicos diferentes en los frutos, con mayor presencia de flavonas, mientras que el análisis sensorial arrojó una diferencia significativa entre los criollos en las variables evaluadas. Los atributos de sabor y textura resultaron los más importantes para la preferencia del consumidor. Diferentes factores ambientales (suelo, clima, altitud, latitud, madurez) modifican la composición nutrimental del aguacate y sus características organolépticas. Los resultados de este trabajo pudieran ayudar a la propagación, diversificación frutícola y desarrollo de empresas enfocadas en este fruto en Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila.

ABSTRACT Calla lily (Zantedeschia spp.) is an herbaceous flowering plant that belongs to the Araceae family, with worldwide distribution. Native to the swampy or mountainous regions of South Africa, it is valued as an ornamental plant due to its extraordinary spathe and decorative leaves. However, its production has decreased due to the presence of diseases. In vitro culture of plant cells and tissues has been successfully applied to precisely diagnose and control diseases to produce disease-free plants. This study analyzes information from in vitro techniques applied to this crop, highlighting phytopathological aspects. It considers the different stages of in vitro culture and the process of obtaining and propagating healthy or pathogen-free plants. In vitro culture has proven to be an effective tool for rapid clonal propagation and multiplication of Zantedeschia spp. Sanitary management before the in vitro culture is recommended.

RESUMEN La cala lily (Zantedeschia spp.) es una planta herbácea con flores que pertenece a la familia Araceae, con distribución mundial. Originaria de las regiones pantanosas o montañosas de Sudáfrica, es valorada como planta ornamental por su extraordinaria espata y hojas decorativas. Sin embargo, su producción ha disminuido por la presencia de enfermedades. El cultivo in vitro de células y tejidos vegetales se ha aplicado con éxito para diagnósticar y controlar enfermedades con precisión y producir plantas libres de enfermedades. Este estudio analiza información de las técnicas in vitro aplicadas a este cultivo, destacando aspectos fitopatológicos. Considera las diferentes etapas del cultivo in vitro y el proceso de obtención y propagación de plantas sanas o libre de patógenos. El cultivo in vitro ha demostrado ser una herramienta eficaz para la rápida propagación clonal y multiplicación de Zantedeschia spp. Se recomienda manejo sanitario antes del cultivo in vitro.

RESUMEN Introducción: La ceguera constituye un problema de salud a escala mundial; su causa principal es el glaucoma. El paciente con esta entidad clínica tiene un riesgo 3 veces mayor de presentar discapacidad visual bilateral grave. Objetivo: Describir algunos aspectos epidemiológicos y clínicos de pacientes con glaucoma primario de ángulo cerrado. Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal y prospectivo de 20 personas mayores de 40 años de edad con glaucoma primario de ángulo cerrado, quienes acudieron al Cuerpo de Guardia del Hospital General Docente Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso de Santiago de Cuba, desde septiembre del 2020 hasta igual periodo del 2022. Resultados: En la serie predominaron el grupo etario de 60-69 años (45,0 %) y las féminas (75 %). La mitad de los pacientes (50,0 %) presentaron agudeza visual en el rango menor de 0,1 y excavación papilar mayor de 0,7. Conclusiones: El glaucoma primario de ángulo cerrado agudo sigue siendo un problema de salud; sus graves consecuencias, como la disminución brusca de la visión que puede provocar daño irreversible al nervio óptico por la hipertensión ocular severa, imponen un verdadero reto para el oftalmólogo en su quehacer diario. El tratamiento oportuno y adecuado de estos pacientes evitará el deterioro de la función visual.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Blindness constitutes a health problem worldwide; its main cause is glaucoma. The patient with this clinical entity has a 3 times higher risk of presenting serious bilateral visual disability. Objective: To describe some epidemiologic and clinical aspects of patients with primary closed-angle glaucoma. Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out with 20 people over 40 years with primary closed-angle glaucoma who went to the emergency room of Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from September, 2020 to the same period in 2022. Results: In the series there was a prevalence of the 60-69 age group (45.0 %) and females (75 %). Half of the patients (50.0 %) presented visual acuteness in the range lower than 0.1 and papillary excavation higher than 0.7. Conclusions: Primary closed-angle glaucoma is still a health problem; its serious consequences, like the abrupt decrease of vision that can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve due to the severe ocular hypertension, impose a true challenge for the ophthalmologist in his daily work. The opportune and appropriate treatment of these patients will avoid the deterioration of visual function.

Resumen Introducción : Actualmente se define al paciente como adulto mayor (AM) si su edad es al menos de 60 años. Dada la expectativa de vida prolongada resulta intere sante evaluar si todos los AM con infarto agudo de mio cardio (IAM) son iguales. Los objetivos fueron conocer la prevalencia de AM en el IAM y dentro de ellos, la de los ≥75 años y analizar características, tratamientos de reperfusión y mortalidad intrahospitalaria de acuerdo a si son < o ≥ 75 años. Métodos : Se analizaron los pacientes AM ingresados en el Registro Nacional de Infarto con supra desnivel del segmento ST (ARGEN-IAM-ST). Se los dividió en grupo 1: 60-74 años y grupo 2: ≥ 75 años y se compararon entre sí. Resultados : AM 3626, 75.92% del Grupo 1, el resto del Grupo 2. En el grupo 2 hubo más mujeres, hipertensos y con antecedentes coronarios. Hubo similar porcentaje de diabetes y dislipidemia, pero menos de tabaquistas. En el Grupo 2 se empleó menos tratamiento de reperfusión (aunque más angioplastia primaria), con similar tiempo puerta-balón. Los pacientes del Grupo 2 recibieron me nos medicamentos de probada eficacia y en la evolución hospitalaria, más sangrado (aunque no mayor), más insuficiencia cardíaca y más mortalidad: 18.3% vs 9.4%, p<0.001. La edad ≥75 años fue predictor independiente de mortalidad. Conclusiones : Uno de cada cuatro AM con IAM tiene más de 75 años; estos pacientes reciben menos reper fusión, presentan más insuficiencia cardíaca y sangrado y tienen el doble de mortalidad que los pacientes de entre 60 y 74 años.

Abstract Introduction : Currently the patient is defined as an older adult (OA) when the age is at least 60 years. Given the long life expectancy, it is interesting to evaluate whether all OAs with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are equal. The objectives were to know the prevalence of OA in AMI and within them, that of those ≥75 years of age and to analyze characteristics, reperfusion treat ments and in-hospital mortality according to whether they are < or ≥ 75 years of age. Methods : OA patients admitted to the National Reg istry of Infarction with ST segment elevation (ARGEN-IAM-ST) were analyzed. They were divided into group 1: 60-74 years old and group 2: ≥ 75 years old and compared with each other. Results : 3626 AM, 75.9% from Group 1, the rest from Group 2. In group 2 there were more women, hyperten sive and with a history of coronary arteries. There was a similar percentage of diabetes and dyslipidemia, but fewer of smokers. In Group 2, less reperfusion treat ment was used (although more primary angioplasty), with similar door-to-balloon time. Patients in Group 2 received fewer medications of proven efficacy and in the hospital course, they had more bleeding (although not major), more heart failure and more mortality: 18.3% vs. 9.4%, p<0.001. Age ≥75 years was an independent predictor of mortality. Conclusions : one in four patients with AMI is over 75 years old; they receive less reperfusion, have more heart failure, bleeding and twice the mortality rate than patients between 60 and 74 years.

Abstract Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It has been demonstrated that the risk of recurrent acute myocardial infarction is related to modifiable risk factors. Despite management and prevention guidelines, adherence to established goals remains unsatisfactory. Objective: To understand the impact of cardiovascular risk factors on complications and changes in the quality of life of the patients. Materials and method: Prospective cohort study involving 49 patients with acute myocardial infarction between December 2020 and March 2021. Follow-ups were conducted at three and six months. Subsequently, univariate, bivariate, and binomial logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association between variables and the presence of cardiovascular complications. Results: 47% of the included patients had acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation, and 26.5% had acute myocardial infarction without ST-segment elevation and unstable angina. At the three-month follow-up, three deaths were recorded (6.1%), two of which were caused by a new cardiovascular event. The higher risk of cardiovascular complications at the six-month follow-up was observed among patients with NYHA functional class II (RR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.28-1.65) and those not engaging in physical activity (RR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.37-1.81). These two factors were the most significant in explaining the presence of cardiovascular complications. Conclusions: Lack of physical activity and functional class are factors with proven evidence to consider. Physical activity, as a modifiable factor, must be emphasized during both hospitalization and ambulatory care to achieve favorable short and long-term clinical outcomes.

Resumen Introducción: La enfermedad cardiovascular es una de las principales causas de morbimortalidad en el mundo. Se ha demostrado que el riesgo de recurrencia de infarto agudo de miocardio está relacionado con factores de riesgo modificables. A pesar de las guías de manejo y prevención, la adherencia a las metas trazadas sigue siendo insatisfactoria. Objetivo: Comprender el impacto de los factores de riesgo cardiovascular relacionados con las complicaciones y los cambios en la calidad de vida de los pacientes. Materiales y método: Cohorte de tipo prospectivo, conformada por 49 pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio y estudiada en el periodo comprendido entre diciembre de 2020 y marzo de 2021, con seguimiento a tres y seis meses. Posteriormente, se realizó un análisis univariado, bivariado y regresión logística binomial, para determinar la asociación entre las variables y la presencia de complicaciones cardiovasculares. Resultados: El 47% de los pacientes incluidos en el estudio presentó infarto agudo de miocardio con elevación del segmento ST y el 26.5% infarto agudo de miocardio sin elevación del segmento ST y angina inestable. Al tercer mes de seguimiento se registraron tres muertes (6.1%), dos de ellas causadas por un nuevo evento cardiovascular. El mayor riesgo de complicaciones cardiovasculares al sexto mes de seguimiento se dio entre los pacientes con clase funcional II de la Asociación del Corazón de Nueva York (NYHA, su sigla en inglés) (RR 1.34; IC 95%: 1.28-1.65) y el no hacer actividad física (RR: 1.44; IC 95%: 1.37-1.81). Estos dos fueron los factores que mejor explicaron la presencia de complicaciones cardiovasculares. Conclusiones: La falta de actividad física y la clase funcional son factores a tener en cuenta con evidencia demostrada. En el caso de la actividad física, al ser un factor modificable, requiere énfasis tanto en la hospitalización como en el manejo ambulatorio del paciente para lograr resultados clínicos favorables a corto y largo plazo.

Abstract Essential oils are one of the most important products in the agricultural and food industry, as they are obtained from aromatic plants using various extraction techniques, such as steam distillation or hydrodistillation. However, these methods present challenges, such as low efficiency, limited selectivity, extensive use of solvents and long extraction times. Moreover, the quality of the oils obtained can be affected by hydrolysis or oxidation due to the duration and amount of water used in the process. This review updates the information on Clevenger-type hydrodistillation extraction of four high-value commercial plant species: Matricaria chamomilla, Rosmarinus officinalis, Origanum vulgare, and Eucalyptus spp. The aim is to evaluate the results of original articles, considering the origin and characteristics of the plant material, extraction conditions, yield and metabolites. The search covered a 10-year period (2013-2023) in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using keywords such as species names and terms “essential oils” and “hydrodistillation”, with Boolean connectors such as OR, AND or NOT. The results show that quality and yield are influenced by factors such as geographical regions of origin, plant part used, drying techniques or extraction conditions (plant material/water ratio, extraction temperature, extraction time, etc.). In future research, the conditions associated with the plant material and the extraction process need to be optimized in obtaining high quality essential oils.

RESUMEN Introducción: la incidencia y prevalencia de la catarata como complicación asociada a uveítis, ha sido un tema poco abordado en Cuba y en especial en la provincia Santiago de Cuba. Objetivo: caracterizar a pacientes operados de catarata posuveítis de acuerdo con variables clínicas y epidemiológicas. Métodos: estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal, en una población de 22 pacientes (22 ojos) operados de catarata posuveítis, centro oftalmológico Hospital General “Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso”, Santiago de Cuba, período enero de 2017 a febrero de 2020. Variables como la edad, sexo, etiología de la uveítis, complicaciones trans y postoperatorias, así como dilatación pupilar lograda en el acto quirúrgico fueron analizadas. La media, desviación estándar y el porcentaje se emplearon como medidas de resumen. Coeficientes de correlación no paramétricos c de Pearson, U de Theil, Tau-c de Kendall y Rho de Spearman, fueron utilizados para determinar posible asociación entre variables objeto de estudio. Resultados: el mayor número de pacientes intervenidos de catarata eran mujeres de 60 y más años con etiología no infecciosa de uveítis. Fueron mínimas las complicaciones transoperatorias y prevaleció la ruptura de cápsula posterior. Las complicaciones postoperatorias inmediatas constituyeron las más frecuentes e incluyeron inflamación ligera y edema corneal de diferentes grados. La edad y la agudeza visual mejor corregida postquirúrgica no estuvieron asociadas en la población estudiada. Conclusiones: la catarata posuveítis es una causa importante de disminución de la agudeza visual con alta incidencia y prevalencia mundial.

ABSTRACT Introduction: the incidence and prevalence of cataract as a complication associated to uveitis has been a subject little approached in Cuba and especially in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Objective: to characterize post-uveitis cataract patients according to clinical and epidemiological variables. Methods: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study, in a population of 22 patients (22 eyes) operated of postuveitis cataract, ophthalmologic center General Hospital "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso", Santiago de Cuba, period January 2017 to February 2020. Variables such as age, sex, etiology of uveitis, trans and postoperative complications, as well as pupillary dilation achieved in the surgical act were analyzed. Mean, standard deviation and percentage were used as summary measures. Non-parametric correlation coefficients Pearson's c, Theil's U, Kendall's Tau-c and Spearman's Rho were used to determine possible association between variables under study. Results: the greatest number of patients who underwent cataract surgery were women 60 years of age and older with non-infectious etiology of uveitis. Transoperative complications were minimal and posterior capsule rupture prevailed. Immediate postoperative complications were the most frequent and included mild swelling and corneal edema of varying degrees. Age and postoperative best corrected visual acuity were not associated in the studied population. Conclusions: post-uveitis cataract is an important cause of decreased visual acuity with high incidence and prevalence worldwide.
