Os black pellets foram avaliados quanto à análise química imediata, composição elementar, teor de umidade, tamanho, densidade aparente, poder calorífico e densidade energética. A adição de água não afetou o teor de voláteis, cinzas e carbono fixo, enquanto o tratamento com adição de 20% de água e quatro horas de secagem apresentou maior teor de umidade (3,34%). A adição de água permitiu melhor condução de calor e disposição das partículas, produzindo pellets com durabilidade superior a 98%. A melhor disposição promovida pela adição de 20% de água também aumentou a densidade dos pellets, resultando em maior densidade energética. Os black pellets podem ser considerados uma boa alternativa para aquecimento residencial, com tratamento T3 (20% de umidade - 4h de secagem) apresentando elevada densidade energética e melhor desempenho em termos de propriedades desejáveis para utilização e comercialização de acordo com a norma EN 14961-6.

ABSTRACT Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality indicators for wood and charcoal from the Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis hybrid (Clone GG 100) in different planting spacings. The study was conducted with the hybrid using the spacings of 2×1, 2×2, 3×2, and 3×3 m. The chemical properties of wood and charcoal were analyzed, and dry wood mass and energy per hectare were estimated. The data were subjected to the t test for comparison of means. Moreover, principal component analysis was conducted to assess the relationships between wood and charcoal indicators as a function of spacing. Results: The 2×2 m spacing showed the highest values for dry wood mass, lignin mass, mass of charcoal, and energy. ABSTRACT Background: The use of X-rays non-destructive technique in color scale in 2D and 3D needs further studies to understand variations in the apparent density of wood stored under natural conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate, by digital X-ray images and to test the rainbow scale in digital X-ray images in 2D and 3D, the apparent density of eucalyptus wood after storage in the field during 365 days. Trees of two diametric classes were randomly distributed at three heights in a pile in direct contact with the soil. The apparent density of the wood and its diametric profiles in the radial direction were determined using digital X-ray images in gray scale, and converted to a rainbow scale and the density variations plotted on a 3D surface. Results: The wood density decreased as the storage period increased. The density of the samples at 0 days of storage evaluated with the 3D images was homogeneous, while an intense attack by xylophagous organisms due to the exposure to the environmental conditions was observed in those collected at 365 days of storage. Diante disso, o reaproveitamento dos gases da carbonização como fonte de energia térmica se torna uma alternativa em potencial para redução do teor de umidade de forma rápida e viável. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a secagem artificial de toras utilizando gases do sistema de carbonização de um forno e uma câmara de secagem. A avaliação da secagem foi realizada em duplicata utilizando um secador quadrado de metal galvanizado de 35 m³ e um forno com capacidade volumétrica útil de 16,8 m³. ABSTRACT The wood carbonization with high moisture content reduces the yield, prolongs the carbonization time and results in charcoal with low mechanical strength. Considering this, the reuse of carbonization gases as a source of thermal energy becomes a potential alternative for reducing moisture content quickly and feasibly. The objective of this study was to evaluate the artificial drying of logs using gases from the carbonization system of a furnace and a drying chamber. The drying evaluation was conducted in duplicate using a 35 m³ galvanized metal square dryer and a furnace with a useful volume capacity of 16.8 m³. The average gas intake temperature for drying was 150°C. The eucalyptus logs were divided into three diameter classes (8-14 cm; 14-22 cm; 8-22 cm). The electricity consumption of the dryer was approximately 49.4 kW per ton of wood (dry mass). The highest thermal efficiency was achieved in the drying of 814 cm diameter class logs. RESUMO Cenários de instabilidade econômica e redução do consumo de carvão vegetal, como as ocorridas em 2009 e 2016, afetam a produção deste insumo, resultando na manutenção das florestas de eucalipto e aumento da idade de corte. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade da madeira de quatro clones de Eucalyptus (clones 1, 2, 3 e 4) com idades entre 108 e 120 meses e do carvão vegetal produzido em forno retangular. Para caracterização da madeira, foram avaliadas a relação cerne/alburno, densidade básica, massa seca por hectare.ano e composição química. As carbonizações foram realizadas em forno retangular, com capacidade de 210 m³ de madeira, e determinaram-se o rendimento gravimétrico e as propriedades do carvão vegetal: densidade do carvão vegetal, granulometria e porcentagem de finos, índice de friabilidade, análise imediata, além da massa de carvão produzida por hectare.ano. Verificou-se efeito significativo dos clones na densidade básica e massa seca, com valores de 494 a 589 kg m-3 e 12,47 a 23,34 ton.ha-1, respectivamente. ABSTRACT Economic instability scenarios and reduction in charcoal consumption, such as those that occurred in 2009 and 2016, affect production and result in the maintenance of eucalyptus forests and an increase in the rotation age. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of wood from four Eucalyptus clones (clones 1, 2, 3, and 4) at the ages of 108 and 120 months and the charcoal produced in a rectangular kiln. We evaluated the heart/sapwood ratio, basic density, dry mass per hectare.year, and chemical composition . The carbonizations were performed in a rectangular kiln (210 m³ of wood). We determined the gravimetric yield and the charcoal properties: density, particle size and percentage of fines, friability index, proximate analysis, and mass of charcoal produced per hectare.year. RESUMO A madeira oriunda de florestas plantadas é o insumo principal na cadeia produtiva do carvão vegetal. No entanto, a heterogeneidade do carvão vegetal, em termos de suas propriedades físicas, químicas e mecânicas e o baixo rendimento nos processos de produção, está entre os principais problemas enfrentados pelas indústrias. Visando selecionar os melhores clones para a produção de carvão vegetal para uso siderúrgico, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades da madeira, além do rendimento e qualidade do carvão vegetal provenientes de diferentes genótipos de Eucalyptus e Corymbia. Foram estudados cinco clones de Eucalyptus spp., com idade de 8 anos e um de Corymbia torelliana x Corymbia citriodora, com idade de 4 anos. Na madeira, determinou-se a densidade básica, composição química estrutural, análise termogravimética (TG/DTG), índice de cristalinidade e poder calorífico superior. Foram realizadas carbonizações em forno mufla, com tempo total de 270 minutos, iniciando em 150°C e finalizando em 450°C. Determinou-se o rendimento gravimétrico, a densidade aparente, o poder calorífico superior e a composição química imediata do carvão vegetal. A densidade básica da madeira variou entre 477 e 652 kg/m3, sendo que o maior valor foi observado para o clone de Eucalyptus cloeziana. Este clone também apresentou o maior teor de lignina total (32,6%), maior rendimento em carvão vegetal (36,3%) e carvão vegetal com maior densidade aparente (466 kg/m3). Os dois clones de Eucalyptus urophylla apresentaram maior poder calorífico superior para o carvão vegetal, cuja média foi 7545 kcal/kg. ABSTRACT Wood from planted forests is the main input in the charcoal production chain. However, the heterogeneity of charcoal, in terms of its physical, chemical and mechanical properties, and the low yield in production processes is among the main problems faced by industries. To select the best clones for the production of charcoal for steelmaking, the objective of this work was to evaluate the properties of wood, in addition to the yield and quality of charcoal from different genotypes of Eucalyptus and Corymbia. Five clones of Eucalyptus spp., 8 years old and one of Corymbia torelliana x Corymbia citriodora, 4 years old were studied. In the wood were determined the basic density, structural chemical composition, thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), crystallinity index and higher heating value. Carbonizations were carried out in a muffle oven, with a total time of 270 minutes, starting at 150°C and ending at 450°C. ABSTRACT Background: The wood heat treatment results in the partial degradation of its chemical constituents, mainly cellulose and hemicellulose, reducing the hygroscopicity of the material. This process improves the dimensional stability and resistance to biodeterioration and worsens the mechanical resistance. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on the physical, anatomical, chemical, and mechanical properties of Fraxinus excelsior wood. In untreated and heat-treated wood, the pH, buffering capacity, basic density, equilibrium moisture content, shrinkage, wood anatomy, thermogravimetric behavior, and chemistry by conventional and FTIR methods were determined. Results: Heat treated wood had lower pH (5.50), equilibrium moisture content (6.26%), shrinkage (7,29%), holocellulose contents (55,96%) and higher buffering capacity (0,479 mmol/L), extractives (8,25%), and lignin contents (35,78%). Heat treatment reduced the pH and increased the buffering capacity of the wood, reduced the holocellulose content, and increased the lignin content, leaving the wood less hygroscopic and reducing its volumetric and linear variation. The process did not change the basic density and fiber length, but it reduced their width, lumen diameter, and wall thickness. The FTIR analysis confirmed the degradation of holocellulose and division of aliphatic side chains in lignin. The maximum dredging range of untreated and heat-treated wood occurred at 350 ºC, and the heat-treated wood had a higher residual mass when subjected to 500 ºC. Foram determinadas as propriedades da madeira e do carvão vegetal para todos os materiais genéticos, além do rendimento gravimétrico. Os dados foram submetidos ao algoritmo de agrupamento hierárquico Scott-Knott, como análise univariada. Para a realização da abordagem multivariada, utilizou-se uma combinação entre as análises de componentes principais e a análise de agrupamentos hierárquicos. Ambas as análises se mostraram eficientes na seleção de materiais genéticos para a produção de carvão vegetal. De acordo com o teste de Scott-Knott, os materiais genéticos 9 e 21 foram os mais indicados para a produção de carvão vegetal. Por meio das análises multivariadas, os mais indicados foram o 9, 10 e 21. O teste de Scott-Knott permitiu a visualização dos resultados de cada parâmetro de qualidade de forma independente, por outro lado, as ferramentas multivariadas possibilitaram a observação das relações entre as propriedades da madeira e do carvão vegetal.

Abstract The aim of this study was to select superior materials of Eucalyptus spp. using univariate and multivariate statistical analyzes. Twenty-five genetic materials from Eucalyptus spp. collected in Itamarandiba, Minas Gerais were used. The properties of wood and charcoal were determined for all genetic materials, in addition to the gravimetric yield. Data were submitted to Scott-Knott hierarchical clustering algorithm as univariate analysis. For the multivariate approach, a combination between principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis was used. Both analyzes were efficient in the selection of genetic materials for charcoal production. According to the Scott-Knott test, genetic materials 9 and 21 were the most suitable to produce charcoal. By means of the multivariate analyzes the most indicated were 9, 10 and 21. The Scott-Knott test allowed the visualization of the results of each quality parameter independently. On the other hand, the multivariate tools enabled the observation of the relation between the properties of wood and charcoal.

RESUMO A previsão de biomassa de madeira e estoque de carbono em florestas plantadas pode variar devido a limitações associadas à medição de parâmetros. Portanto, reduzir possíveis erros gerados na quantificação de biomassa e estoque de carbono é um passo importante na obtenção de dados confiáveis. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar o uso de metodologias destrutivas e não destrutivas para a previsão de biomassa e estoque de carbono em uma floresta plantada de eucalipto. As análises foram realizadas em 21 árvores e 3 metodologias para estimativa de estoque de carbono foram comparadas. Para a metodologia 1, uma amostra controle foi colhida, seccionada, pesada em campo e o estoque de carbono calculado com base nesses dados. A metodologia 2 também foi destrutiva, pois as árvores foram cortadas, cubadas e o estoque de carbono previsto com base nesses dados. A metodologia 3 foi não destrutiva, pois as árvores foram cubadas com auxílio de um equipamento e o estoque de carbono estimado foi baseado nesses dados. A biomassa e o estoque de carbono foram comparados pelo Teste F e nenhuma diferença estatística foi observada. Os dados foram separados de acordo com as classes diamétricas e comparados pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov, e novamente não foi observada diferença significativa. Além disso, três equações foram geradas com base no modelo de Schumacher & Hall e comparadas pelo modelo de teste de identidade e não foram observadas diferenças entre as metodologias. Assim, tanto as metodologias não destrutivas quanto as destrutivas aqui avaliadas foram eficazes e apresentaram resultados iguais à amostra controle. Além disso, o uso da metodologia não destrutiva reduz o tempo e o custo destinados à previsão de biomassa e estoque de carbono.

ABSTRACT Predicting wood biomass and carbon stock contents in planted forests can vary due to limitations associated with the measurement of parameters. Therefore, reducing possible errors generated over biomass and carbon stock quantification is an important step in obtaining reliable data. The study aimed to compare the use of destructive and non-destructive methodologies for predicting biomass and carbon stock in a planted Eucalyptus forest. Scaling was performed on 21 trees and 3 methodologies for carbon stock estimation were compared. For methodology 1, a control sample was harvested, sectioned, weighted in the field, and the carbon stock calculated based on these data. Methodology 2 was also destructive, as trees were harvested, scaled and the carbon stock predicted based on these data. Methodology 3 was non-destructive, as trees were scaled upright with the aid of equipment and the predicted carbon stock was based on these data. Biomass and carbon stock were compared by Test F and no statistical difference was observed. The data were separated according to diametric classes and compared by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and again no significant difference was observed. Furthermore, three equations were generated based on the Schumacher & Hall model and compared by the identity test model and no differences between the methodologies were observed. Thus, both nondestructive and destructive methodologies herein evaluated were effective and showed equal results to the control sample. Moreover, the use of the non-destructive methodology reduces time and cost destined to predicting biomass and carbon stock.

ABSTRACT Background: The fibres dimensions vary along a tree trunk, and these variations are related to the apical meristem and vascular cambium activities; understanding these variations would guide the best use of wood. There have been studies on the pattern of fibres dimensions variation along the tree trunk in the radial and longitudinal directions; however, the vast majority do not take into account the structure of the annual growth rings. Hence, this study aimed to obtain the pattern of fibres dimensions variation and their quality indexes along the tree trunk take into account the structure of the annual growth rings. Two Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis hybrid clones were used in the study. Ten-year-old trees were selected and discs were removed from 13 longitudinal positions. The disks were prepared and the growth rings were subsequently identified and the samples used for maceration were collected. Twenty fibres were measured in the annual growth rings present in each longitudinal position. Results: In the longitudinal direction, within the annual growth rings, the fibre dimensions and their quality indices did not show a well-defined pattern of variation. In the radial direction, the length, cell wall thickness, wall fraction, and Runkel ratio of the fibres tended to increase following the pith-bark direction, while the lumen diameter and flexibility coefficient decreased. Conclusion: Nevertheless, the fibre width and fibre slenderness index did not present a well-defined pattern of variation in the radial direction.

Abstract: This paper aims to evaluate the implications of Eucalyptus woodchip utilization as an alternative solid fuel for thermal power plants, highlighting its energy properties, power generation expenses and unit variable costs. Woodchip samples were collected from different sources and a proximate analysis was carried out in order to determine their moisture content, basic and bulk densities, ash content and higher heating value. Then, with these properties, empirical indices of a 10-megawatt thermal power plant were used to simulate the potential woodchip consumption, the forest area needed and the unit variable cost (US$·MWh−1) for each sample. The results indicate that woodchip samples with lower moisture content and improved higher heating value presented: reduced woodchip consumption for the same power generation, decreased generation expenses, reduced unit variable costs and smaller Eucalyptus plantations area needed to supply the woodchip consumption. Greater energy density may result in lower transportation and storage expenses, however, does not indicate better generation performance, since it is influenced by biomass field conditions. All samples obtained satisfactory levels of ash content, which may result in lower emissions of pollutants and superior operational efficiency. Finally, all samples presented unit variable costs below the limit established by the government for participation in the regulated energy market, which might be an economic attraction for this kind of project. Therefore, Eucalyptus woodchip moisture content, higher heating value and energy density are key issues in sustainable thermal power generation and should be managed by Eucalyptus power plants in order to reach better generation performance and reduced expenses.

Abstract: The differentiation between the charcoal produced from (Eucalyptus) plantations and native forests is essential to control, commercialization, and supervision of its production in Brazil. The main contribution of this study is to identify the charcoal origin using macroscopic images and Deep Learning Algorithm. We applied a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using VGG-16 architecture, with preprocessing based on contrast enhancement and data augmentation with rotation over the training set images. on the performance of the CNN with fine-tuning using 360 macroscopic charcoal images from the plantation and native forests. The results pointed out that our method provides new perspectives to identify the charcoal origin, achieving results upper 95 % of mean accuracy to classify charcoal from native forests for all compared preprocessing strategies.

RESUMO Os métodos tradicionais de avaliação econômica de projetos de produção de madeira e carvão vegetal são baseados na análise de indicadores, porém, estão sujeitas a variações de mercado e incertezas. O estudo foiconduzido no município de Lamim-MG, para avaliação da viabilidade econômica na produção de madeira e carvão vegetal com o uso do sistema forno-fornalha, devido à necessidade de se conhecer a viabilidade econômica desse novo sistema produtivo. A análise de sensibilidade utilizando a técnica de Monte Carlo foirealizada nos custos e receitas. O fluxo de caixa para a produção de madeira e de carvão vegetal foielaborado e os seguintes critérios foram utilizados na análise econômica: Valor Presente Líquido (VPL), Razão Benefício Custo (B/C), Valor Periódico Equivalente (VPE) e Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR). A análise de sensibilidade na produção de madeira e da produção de carvão vegetal foirealizada com o auxílio do software @RISK, de acordo com o parâmetro VPE, que permite comparar projetos com durações diferentes. A produção de madeira foiviável economicamente, com VPL de R$212,68 ha-1 e VPE de R$88,74 ha-1, com custo médio de produção de R$71,37 m3 madeira-1. O valor médio do VPE encontrado na análise de sensibilidade foide R$ 96,82 ha-1. A produção de carvão vegetal foiviável economicamente, com VPL de R$23,41 mdc carvão vegetal-1 e VPE de R$18,57 mdc carvão vegetal-1. O valor médio do VPE encontrado na análise de risco foide R$51,78 mdc carvão vegetal-1. Foi possível concluir que a produção de madeira de eucalipto e de carvão vegetal são viáveis economicamente na região.

ABSTRACT Traditional methods of economic evaluation of wood and charcoal production projects are based on indicators analysis, however, they are subject to market variations and uncertainties. The study was carried out in the city of Lamim, Minas Gerais State, to evaluate the economic viability of wood and charcoal production using the kiln-furnace system, due to the need to know the economic viability of this new production system. Sensitivity analysis using the Monte Carlo technique was performed on costs and revenues. The wood and charcoal production cash flow was elaborated and the following criteria were used in the economic analysis: Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR), Equivalent Periodic Value (EPV), and Internal Return Rate (IRR). The wood and charcoal production sensitivity analysis was carried out using the software @RISK, according to the VPE parameter, which allows comparing projects with different durations. Wood production was economically viable, with NPV of $40.26 ha-1 and EPV of $ 16.80 ha-1, with an average production cost of $13.51 m3 wood-1. The EPV mean value found in the sensitivity analysis was $18.33 ha-1. The charcoal production was economically viable, with NPV of $4.43 mdc charcoal-1 and EPV of $3.52 mdc charcoal-1. The EPV mean value found in the sensitivity analysis was $9.80 mdc charcoal-1. It was possible to conclude that the wood and charcoal production are economically viable in the region.

RESUMO O entendimento das relações entre as propriedades da madeira e do carvão vegetal possibilita a melhoria da produção de carvão. Sendo assim, neste estudo utilizou-se o algoritmo random forest para análise da influência de propriedades da madeira de eucalipto sobre a qualidade do carvão vegetal, bem como avaliou-se a acurácia dos valores preditos em relação às estimativas do support vector regression e da regressão linear múltipla. Foram mensuradas seis propriedades da madeira e seis do carvão do híbrido Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla e de doze clones de Corymbia torelliana x Corymbia critriodora com sete anos de idade. Nas análises, foi utilizado a medida de redução média da impureza do nó (soma de quadrados residual) do random forest e a correlação de cópulas para avaliar a relação entre propriedades da madeira e do carvão. O random forest foi comparado ao support vector regression e à regressão linear múltipla por meio do coeficiente de determinação, correlação linear entre valores observados e preditos, erro médio absoluto e raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio. A acurácia do random forest foi maior que a do support vector regression e da regressão linear múltipla, principalmente em termos de coeficiente de determinação e correlação linear entre valores observados e preditos. O rendimento e qualidade do carvão vegetal dos clones foram influenciados, principalmente, pelo teor de holocelulose, relação cerne/alburno e densidade básica da madeira. A densidade relativa aparente do carvão foi a variável em que o random forest atingiu o melhor nível de explicação da variabilidade em função das propriedades da madeira, enquanto para o teor de carbono fixo o algoritmo forneceu predições com menor erro.

ABSTRACT The understanding of the relationship between the properties of wood and charcoal makes it possible to improve the production of charcoal. Therefore, the random forest algorithm was used in this study to analyze the influence of eucalyptus wood properties on the quality of charcoal as well as the accuracy of the predicted values concerning the results estimated by support vector regression and multiple linear regression. Six properties of wood and six properties of charcoal obtained from the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla and from twelve clones of Corymbia torelliana x Corymbia critriodora at the age of seven were measured. In the analysis, the measure of mean decrease in node impurity (residual sum of squares) calculated with the random forest and the copula correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between properties of wood and charcoal. The random forest was compared to the support vector regression and multiple linear regression through the coefficient of determination, linear correlation between observed and predicted values, mean absolute error and root mean squared error. The accuracy of the random forest was greater than that obtained with the support vector regression and multiple linear regression, mainly in terms of the coefficient of determination and the linear correlation between observed and predicted values. The yield and quality of the charcoal produced from clones were mainly influenced by the holocellulose content, heartwood/sapwood ratio, and basic wood density. The apparent relative density of charcoal was the variable in which the random forest algorithm reached the best level of explanation of the variability as a function of the properties of wood, while the minor error was observed for the fixed carbon content.
