Aim The main purpose of this study was to conduct a narrative review investigating the possible relationship between permanent maxillary anterior teeth and anthropometric facial parameters in different populations. Methods Searches were performed in the PubMed, BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) and SciELO databases to identify relevant scientific articles using the following search terms: “maxillary anterior teeth”, “facial measurements” and “anthropometry”, in such a way that 218 publications were found. After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 publications remained for full-text reading. Results All studies involved male and female samples and it was notorious that male measurements were unanimously higher than those obtained in the opposite sex. The age of the analyzed participants ranged from 17 to 60 years; however, a mean age of 18 to 25 years was the most investigated in literature. In addition, facial measurements including the bizygomatic width, interpupillary distance, intercanthal distance, interalar width and intercommissural width have been proposed to help determine the correct size of anterior teeth. Conclusion It was concluded that despite the limited number of studies, some factors that influence dental and facial dimensions, such as sex and age, can be identified. Abstract Background: There is a lack of information on the role of chronic use of hydroxychloroquine during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. Our aim was to compare the occurrence of COVID-19 between rheumatic disease patients on hydroxychloroquine with individuals from the same household not taking the drug during the first 8 weeks of community viral transmission in Brazil. Methods: This baseline cross-sectional analysis is part of a 24-week observational multi-center study involving 22 Brazilian academic outpatient centers. All information regarding COVID-19 symptoms, epidemiological, clinical, and demographic data were recorded on a specific web-based platform using telephone calls from physicians and medical students. COVID-19 was defined according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health (BMH) criteria. Mann-Whitney, Chi-square and Exact Fisher tests were used for statistical analysis and two binary Final Logistic Regression Model by Wald test were developed using a backward-stepwise method for the presence of COVID-19. Results: From March 29th to May 17st, 2020, a total of 10,443 participants were enrolled, including 5166 (53.9%) rheumatic disease patients, of whom 82.5% had systemic erythematosus lupus, 7.8% rheumatoid arthritis, 3.7% Sjögren’s syndrome and 0.8% systemic sclerosis. In total, 1822 (19.1%) participants reported flu symptoms within the 30 days prior to enrollment, of which 3.1% fulfilled the BMH criteria, but with no significant difference between rheumatic disease patients (4.03%) and controls (3.25%). After adjustments for multiple confounders, the main risk factor significantly associated with a COVID-19 diagnosis was lung disease (OR 1.63; 95% CI 1.03-2.58); and for rheumatic disease patients were diagnosis of systemic sclerosis (OR 2.8; 95% CI 1.19-6.63) and glucocorticoids above 10 mg/ day (OR 2.05; 95% CI 1.31-3.19). In addition, a recent influenza vaccination had a protective effect (OR 0.674; 95% CI 0.46-0.98). Conclusion: Patients with rheumatic disease on hydroxychloroquine presented a similar occurrence of COVID-19 to household cohabitants, suggesting a lack of any protective role against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Resumo Objetivo identificar fatores associados ao enfrentamento da pandemia da COVID-19 por pessoas idosas com e sem comorbidades. Método estudo descritivo, transversal, com pessoas idosas (n=569), entre 60 e 80 anos, com ou sem comorbidades, nas cinco regiões do Brasil. Coleta de dados com questionário virtual e análise com base na estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados os resultados mostram que 351, (61,68%), referem comorbidade. Houve associação significativa entre os grupos nas variáveis: faixa etária (p=0,017), realizar alguma atividade laboral (p≤0,001), pensamento da possibilidade de ser infectado pelo novo coronavírus (p≤0,001), concordar com medidas de prevenção adotadas para o distanciamento social (p≤0,001), se informar por outro meio de comunicação além da televisão (p≤0,001). Conclusão e implicações para a prática os idosos com comorbidades pensam na possibilidade de ser infectado pelo novo coronavírus, concordam mais com as medidas de distanciamento social e se informam mais. Nesse sentido, indica-se a realização de pesquisas com ênfase nos idosos sem comorbidade, para direcionar melhor os cuidados de saúde em tempos de pandemias.

Abstract Objective to identify factors associated to coping with the COVID-19 pandemic by older adults with and without comorbidities. There was a significant association between the groups in the following variables: age group (p=0.017), performing some work activity (p≤0.001), thinking about the possibility of being infected by the new coronavirus (p≤0.001), agreeing with prevention measures adopted for social distancing (p≤0.001), informing yourself by other means of communication besides television (p≤0.001). Conclusion and implications for the practice the older adults with comorbidities think about the possibility of being infected by the new coronavirus, agree more with the social distancing measures and get more information. To such an effect, it is recommended to carry out research studies with an emphasis on the older adult without comorbidity, to better target health care in pandemic times.

La recolección de datos se realizó con cuestionario virtual y el análisis mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados los resultados muestran que 351 personas, (61,68%), refieren a comorbilidades. Hubo asociación significativa entre grupos en las variables: grupo de edad (p=0,017), realizar alguna actividad laboral (p≤0,001), pensar en la posibilidad de estar infectado por el nuevo coronavirus (p≤0,001), acuerdo con las medidas preventivas adoptadas para el distanciamiento social (p≤0.001), informarse por otros medios de comunicación además de la televisión (p≤0.001). Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica los adultos mayores con comorbilidades piensan en la posibilidad de estar contagiados por el nuevo coronavirus, están más de acuerdo con las medidas de distanciamiento social y obtienen más información. En este sentido, se recomienda realizar una investigación con énfasis en los adultos mayores sin comorbilidades, para orientar mejor la atención sanitaria en tiempos de pandemia.

Abstract The study of dental development in individuals born with cleft lip and palate (CLP) serves to determine when orthodontic intervention should start. Objective To evaluate the permanent second molar development in children born with cleft lip and palate according to Demirjian’s and Nolla’s methods. Methodology Out of a total of 513 digital panoramic radiographs, 113 pairs of children aged 3 to 16 years were selected. The exams were from children born with or without cleft lip and palate, of the same sex, with an age difference of up to 30 days. The images were analyzed by three examiners and reliability was checked through intra-examiner agreement by the Kappa test. The data were analyzed by Wilcoxon's and Mann-Whitney tests according to each dataset. Results The findings indicated delayed development of the permanent second molars in children with CLP (P<0.001). The development of the right permanent second molar was delayed compared to the left molar in children with CLP. Moreover, mandibular teeth showed significantly earlier development than maxillary teeth in both the case and control groups. There was no significant difference in the development of permanent second molars between sexes. Conclusion Children with CLP presented delay in the development of permanent second molars.

RESUMO Introdução: A disfunção temporomandibular apresenta etiologia multifatorial, enquadrando-se nesses fatores etiológicos condições psicológicas como a ansiedade. Objetivo: Identificar a prevalência da disfunção temporomandibular, ansiedade e seus respectivos graus nos graduandos. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo do tipo transversal, observacional, com abordagem indutiva, adotando como estratégia de coleta de dados o Índice Anamnésico de Fonseca e o Inventário de Ansiedade Traço-Estado em uma amostra de 185 estudantes de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Patos, Brasil. Os dados foram trabalhados pela estatística descritiva e submetidos ao teste estatístico Qui-quadrado e Exato de Fisher considerado significativo ao nível de 5%. Resultados: Os resultados indicam que a maioria da amostra é composta pelo sexo feminino (67 %) com idade média de 21,4 anos. Além disso, 79 % dos alunos apresentou algum grau da disfunção, tendo a maior parte (72 %) se encaixado no grau leve. A ansiedade estado e a ansiedade traço foram mais prevalentes no grau moderado com 79 % e 72 %, respectivamente. Não foi identificada associação estatística significativa entre a presença e ausência de Disfunção Temporomandibular e ansiedade, seja ela traço ou estado, na amostra estudada com p= 0,484 e p= 0,297, respectivamente. Conclusão: Conclui-se que houve uma alta prevalência de Disfunção Temporomandibular e ansiedade nos graduandos de Odontologia, destacando-se, assim, a importância da busca detalhada desses sinais e sintomas durante o exame clínico.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The etiology of temporomandibular dysfunction is multifactorial, and causal factors include psychological conditions such as anxiety. Objective: Identify the prevalence of temporomandibular dysfunction and anxiety as well as their levels among dental students from the Federal University of Campina Grande. Methods: An inductive cross-sectional observational study was conducted of a sample of 185 dental students from the Federal University of Campina Grande. Data collection was based on Fonseca's anamnesis index and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and subjected to the chi-square statistical test and Fisher's exact test, with a significance level of 5 %. Results: Results show that most of the sample was female (67 %) with a mean age of 21.4 years. On the other hand, 79 % of the students had some degree of dysfunction, which was mild in most (72 %). Anxiety state and anxiety trait were more prevalent on the moderate level with 79 % and 72 % respectively. No significant statistical association was identified in the study sample between the presence and absence of temporomandibular dysfunction and anxiety, be it trait or state, with values of p= 0.484 and p= 0.297 respectively. Conclusions: High statistical prevalence was found of temporomandibular dysfunction and anxiety among dental students, hence the importance of a detailed search for those signs and symptoms during clinical examination.

RESUMEN Introducción: La disfunción temporomandibular presenta una causa multifactorial, incluyéndose en estos factores causales condiciones psicológicas como la ansiedad. Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia de la disfunción temporomandibular y la ansiedad y sus respectivos niveles en estudiantes. Métodos: Se trata de un estudio del tipo transversal, observacional y con enfoque inductivo. Se adoptó como estrategia de recolección de datos el índice de anamnesis de Fonseca y el inventario de ansiedad rasgo-estado en una muestra de 185 estudiantes de Odontología de la Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. Los datos fueron trabajados por la estadística descriptiva y sometidos a la prueba estadística de chi cuadrado y exacta de Fisher, considerado significativo al nivel de 5 %. Resultados: Los resultados indican que la mayoría de la muestra eran del sexo femenino (67 %) con una edad promedio de 21,4 años. Además, 79 % de los alumnos presentaron algún nivel de disfunción, y la mayor parte (72 %) se encuadró en el nivel leve. La ansiedad estado y la ansiedad rasgo fueron más prevalentes en el nivel moderado con 79 % y 72 %, respectivamente. No se identificó ninguna asociación estadística significativa entre la presencia y ausencia de disfunción temporomandibular y la ansiedad, sea rasgo o estado, en la muestra investigada, con los respectivos valores de p= 0,484 y p= 0,297. Conclusiones: Hubo una alta prevalencia estadística de disfunción temporomandibular y ansiedad en los estudiantes de Odontología, así que se destaca la importancia de la búsqueda detallada de estos signos y síntomas en el examen clínico.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o desenvolvimento dos caninos permanentes de crianças da Paraíba com fissura labiopalatina utilizando os métodos de Nolla e Demirjian. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado utilizando uma abordagem indutiva com procedimento estatístico comparativo e técnica de pesquisa por documentação direta. O universo consistiu de todas as crianças atendidas no serviço de ortodontia da Associação Brasileira de Odontologia - Secção Paraíba. A amostra foi composta por 72 pares de radiografias panorâmicas de crianças com e sem fissura labiopalatina, de mesmo gênero e com diferença de idade de até 30 dias, na faixa etária dos 5 aos 13 anos. Assim, foi avaliado o desenvolvimento de 576 dentes caninos. Todas as imagens foram avaliadas por três examinadores devidamente calibrados, ao mesmo tempo, e os estágios de calcificação foram determinados mediante consenso. Nas radiografias panorâmicas foram avaliados os graus de calcificação dos dentes caninos de acordo com a classificação de Nolla e Demirjian. Resultados: As médias dos estágios de calcificação foram correspondentemente mais elevadas no grupo caso do que no grupo controle, mostrando atraso de desenvolvimento dos dentes caninos nos pacientes fissurados. Os caninos inferiores apresentaram-se significativamente mais adiantados em relação aos superiores (p < 0,001). Não foram registradas diferenças significativas entre os lados. O desenvolvimento dentário ocorreu precocemente no sexo feminino, mas sem diferença significativa. Conclusão: Desta forma, o presente estudo vem colaborar para o aprimoramento dos conhecimentos acerca do desenvolvimento morfológico dos caninos permanentes nos pacientes fissurados. É consolidada a importância da individualização no planejamento ortodôntico, considerando a grande variação e importância do dente canino, tanto no aspecto funcional, como estético.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluating the development of the permanent cuspids in children from Paraíba with cleft lip and palate applying the Nolla and the Demirjian methods. Methods: A cross-sectional study using an inductive approach and applying a comparative statistical procedure and direct documentation research technique. The universe of the study consisted of children assisted at the orthodontic practice of the Brazilian Association of Dentistry - Paraíba Section. The sample comprised 72 pairs of panoramic radiographs of children with and without cleft lip and palate from the same gender and, age difference of up to 30 days, ranging from 5 to 13 years of age. The study has evaluated the development of 576 cuspids. The images were evaluated by three duly calibrated examiners concomitantly, and the calcification stages were determined by a consensus. The stages of the cuspids calcification were evaluated in the panoramic radiographs according to Nolla and Demirjian classifications. Results: The average of the calcification stage of teeth was correspondingly higher in the control group than in the case group, showing a development delay of the cuspid teeth in the cleft lip and palate patients. The lower cuspids were significantly more developed than the upper cuspids (p <0.001). There were no significant differences between the sides. There was early tooth development in females but without significant difference. Conclusion: It was possible to note that patients with cleft lip and palate presented a delay in the development of the permanent cuspids when compared to non-cleft lip and palate patients, thus, reinforcing the importance of the individualization of the orthodontic planning.

Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 200 crianças com idade média de 8,5 anos que frequentaram a Clínica-Escola de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande e as Unidades Básicas de Saúde da Família do município de Patos-PB entre junho de 2015 e maio de 2016. A ansiedade foi avaliada utilizando a Dental Anxiety Scale e o Venham Picture Test. O teste Qui-Quadrado e Exato de Fisher foram usados para explorar o nível de significância das associações entre as variáveis. Resultados: A ansiedade foi observada na maioria das crianças (Dental Anxiety Scale - 89% e Venham Picture Test - 70,5%) e os níveis predominantes foram baixo e moderado. A faixa etária da criança foi associada significativamente à ansiedade (p=0,014) através do teste Venham Picture Test, ao passo que o gênero não apresentou essa correlação. A ansiedade sofreu influência de todos os fatores estudados: marcação da consulta, sala de espera, caneta odontológica e raspagem periodontal. Conclusão: A maioria das crianças apresentou ansiedade e os fatores desencadeadores marcação da consulta, sala de espera, caneta odontológica e raspagem periodontal atuaram consideravelmente para o seu desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the profile of children from 6 to 12 years of age, in relation to anxiety towards dental treatment and evaluate the main factors that trigger anxiety in this population. Methods: The sample was composed of 200 children with an average age of 8.5 years who attended the Clinic of the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Campina Grande and the Basic Healthcare Units of the municipality of Patos, Paraíba, Brazil between June 2015 and May 2016. Anxiety was assessed using the Dental Anxiety Scale and the Venham Picture Test. The Chi-Square test and Fisher’s exact test were used to explore the level of significance of the associations between the variables Results: Anxiety was observed in the majority of children (Dental Anxiety Scale - 89% and Venham Picture Test - 70.5%) and the predominant levels were low to moderate. The child´s age group was significantly associated with anxiety (p=0.014) by the Venham Picture Test, while gender did not present this correlation. Anxiety was influenced by all the factors studied: making the appointment, waiting room, rotary instrument and periodontal scaling. Conclusion: The majority of children presented anxiety and the trigger factors: making the appointment, waiting room, rotary instrument and periodontal scaling contributed considerably to its development.

RESUMO Objetivo: estudar os dados epidemiológicos de pacientes vítimas de traumas bucomaxilofaciais atendidos em um hospital de referência da Paraíba. Métodos: estudo transversal de abordagem indutiva com procedimento estatístico comparativo e técnica de pesquisa por documentação direta em campo. O universo foi constituído dos prontuários hospitalares obtidos de janeiro de 2016 a dezembro de 2017 de pacientes atendidos pelo Serviço de Cirurgia e Traumatologia Bucomaxilofacial desse hospital. A amostra foi composta por 332 pacientes de acordo com os critérios de elegibilidade do estudo. A coleta de dados foi realizada por dois examinadores previamente calibrados e os dados foram analisados descritiva e inferencialmente. Resultados: os pacientes do sexo masculino foram mais acometidos por trauma facial (83,1%), principalmente na terceira década de vida (32,2%). Acidentes motociclísticos foram a etiologia mais comum de trauma para ambos os sexos. Em relação à estatística inferencial com margem de erro fixada em 5%, não foi observada associação significativa (p>0,05) entre os sexos e os fatores etiológicos do trauma. Os ossos do nariz (38,2%) foram os ossos mais afetados e a lesão mais frequente de partes moles foi o edema, em 50,9% dos casos. Apenas 20,8% dos pacientes com fraturas ósseas foram politraumatizados. Conclusão: as vítimas de traumatismo bucomaxilofacial atendidas em nosso hospital são predominantemente homens na terceira década de vida, envolvidos em acidentes motociclísticos e com lesões em ossos do nariz.

ABSTRACT Objective: to study the epidemiological data of patients suffering from buccomaxillofacial trauma treated at a referral hospital in the State of Paraíba. Methods: we conducted a cross-sectional study of inductive approach, with a comparative statistical procedure and research technique by field direct documentation. The sample comprised hospital records obtained from January 2016 to December 2017 of patients attended by the Service of Buccomaxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology of this hospital, and consisted of 332 patients according to the study’s eligibility criteria. Two previously calibrated examiners collected and analyzed the data, both descriptively and inferentially. Results: males sustained the majority of facial trauma (83.1%), mainly in the third decade of life (32.2%). Motorcycle accidents were the most common etiology of trauma for both genders. In relation to inferential statistics with a margin of error of 5%, there was no significant association (p>0.05) between the genders and the trauma etiological factors. The bones of the nose (38.2%) were the most affected bones and the most frequent soft tissue injury was edema, in 50.9% of cases. Only 20.8% of the patients with bone fractures were polytraumatized. Conclusion: the victims of oral and maxillofacial trauma attended at our hospital are predominantly men in the third decade of life, involved in motorcycle accidents and sustaining lesions in the nose bones nose.

Resumo O estudo teve por objetivo compreender a percepção de estudantes do curso de Odontologia da Universidade Federal da Paraíba sobre a utilização do portfólio como um dos métodos de avaliação. Os dados referentes a 16 estudantes foram coletados em 2011 por meio da técnica do grupo focal e submetidos à análise de conteúdo. Definiram-se, então, as categorias temáticas: conceituação, papel do discente-docente, metodologias ativas, dificuldades na elaboração do portfólio e sugestões. Os estudantes compreendem o portfólio como instrumento de diálogo entre docentes e discentes, por meio dos relatos das vivências em grupo nos equipamentos sociais e reflexões individuais na construção de conceitos e aprofundamento teórico. Conclui-se que os estudantes percebem o portfólio como ferramenta potente e inovadora para a formação profissional, constituindo-se instrumento de acompanhamento do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, por ser dialógico, interativo, oportunizando uma aprendizagem ativa.

Abstract The study aimed to understand the perception Dentistry students at the Federal University of Paraíba have of the use of portfolios as one of the evaluation methods. Data were collected from 16 students in 2011 by means of the focus group technique and were analyzed based on content analysis. The themes were then defined: conceptualization, student-professor role, active methods, difficulties in preparing portfolios and suggestions. Students see portfolios as an instrument of dialog between professors and students through accounts of group experiences in the social equipment and individual reflections in the construction of concepts and theoretical deepening. It was concluded that students perceive the portfolio as a powerful, innovative tool for vocational training, serving to monitor the teaching-learning process for being dialogical, interactive, and providing opportunities for active learning.

Resumen Resumen El estudio tuvo por objetivo comprender la percepción de estudiantes del curso de Odontología de la Universidad Federal de Paraíba sobre la utilización del portafolio como uno de los métodos de evaluación. Los datos referentes a 16 estudiantes fueron recolectados en 2011 mediante la técnica del grupo focal y se estudiaron por análisis de contenido. Se delimitaron entonces las categorías temáticas: definición, papel del discente-docente, metodologías activas, dificultades en la preparación del portafolio y sugerencias. Los estudiantes entienden al portafolio como un instrumento de diálogo entre docentes y discentes, por medio de los relatos de las vivencias en grupo en los equipos sociales y reflexiones individuales, en la construcción de conceptos y profundización teórica. Se concluye que los estudiantes observan al portafolio como una herramienta potente e innovadora para la formación profesional, siendo un instrumento de seguimiento del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, por ser dialógico, interactivo, y brindar una oportunidad de aprendizaje activo.

Os defeitos de esmalte estão entre as alterações que acometem os indivíduos portadores de fissuras labiopalatinas. O propósito do presente estudo foi descrever a prevalência de defeitos de esmalte em indivíduos portadores de fissuras, bem como a sua distribuição quanto ao tipo de fissura e lado fissurado, nos pacientes que procuraram o serviço de referência em ortodontia no atendimento de fissurados da Paraíba, Brasil. Para tanto, este estudo caracterizou-se por ser do tipo transversal e observacional, adotando como estratégia de coleta de dados o exame clínico em 76 indivíduos portadores de fissuras pós e transforame incisivo unilateral ou bilateral, de ambos os sexos, com média de idade de 13,3 anos. O exame foi realizado nos dentes incisivos e caninos superiores, por dois examinadores previamente treinados (kappa= 0,89). Os pacientes incluídos foram todos que estavam em atendimento no período de janeiro a junho de 2011 em que as faces vestibulares dos dentes a serem examinados permitissem a avaliação clínica. Foram excluídos os que apresentavam outras deformidades associadas e que não tivessem sido submetidos às cirurgias primárias. Os dados foram submetidos à estatística descritiva e ao teste estatístico qui-quadrado, sendo significativo ao nível de 5 %. Houve predominância do gênero masculino (57,9 %) e da fissura transforame incisiva unilateral esquerda (40,8 %). Em relação ao defeito de esmalte, o dente mais acometido foi o incisivo central, a maioria dos examinados apresentou opacidade difusa (14,9 %), seguida pela presença de opacidade demarcada (13,15 %) e opacidade mais hipoplasia (10,9 %) e houve diferença estatística significativa (p< 0,00001) entre o lado fissurado e o contralateral. Os resultados mostram elevada frequência de defeitos de esmalte nos pacientes estudados, particularmente nos casos bilaterais e nos dentes adjacentes à fissura.

The enamel defects are some of the changes affecting persons with palatoschisis. The aim or present paper was to describe the prevalence of enamel defects with labial and palatine fissure, as well as its distribution by type of fissure in patients came to Orthodontics service of Paraíba, Brazil. A cross-sectional and observational study was conducted to collect data from the postmortem physical examination of 76 patients with palatoschisis through the unilateral and bilateral incisor foramen, of both sexes and a mean age of 13.3 years. The examination was performed in the upper incisor and canines by two examiners previously trained (kappa= 0.89). Patients included were those came to service from January to June, 2011, where the vestibular surfaces of teeth allowed a clinical assessment. Those with malformations and no primary surgery were excluded. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Chi² test with a significance of 5 %. The male sex accounted for 57.9 % and the left unilateral fissure was of 40.8 %. In relation to enamel defects, the more involved tooth was the central incisor and a diffuse opacity for a 14.9 % followed by the presence of limited opacity for a 13.15 % and hypoplasia for a 10.9 %. There were statistically significant differences (p< 0.00001) between fissure and the contralateral side. Results showed the high frequency of enamel defects in the study patients, mainly in bilateral cases and in teeth adjacent to fissure side.

Los defectos en el esmalte son algunos de los cambios que afectan a las personas con labio y paladar fisurados. El propósito de este estudio fue describir la prevalencia de defectos del esmalte con fisura labial y palatina, así como su distribución por tipo de fisura, en los pacientes que asistieron al servicio de ortodoncia de Paraíba, Brasil. Se realizó un estudio transversal y observacional donde se recolectaron datos del examen clínico en 76 pacientes con fisura post foramen, trans foramen incisivo unilateral o bilateral, de ambos sexos y con una edad media de 13,3 años. El examen fue realizado en los dientes incisivos y caninos superiores, por dos examinadores previamente capacitados (kappa= 0,89). Los pacientes incluidos fueron los que asistieron al servicio durante el periodo de enero a junio de 2011, en los que las superficies vestibulares de los dientes que se examinaron permitieron una evaluación clínica. Se excluyeron aquellos con malformaciones y que no habían sido sometidos a cirugía primaria. Los datos fueron sometidos a estadística descriptiva y chi-cuadrado con una significación de 5 %. El sexo masculino representó el 57,9 % y la fisura unilateral izquierda fue de un 40,8 %. En relación con defectos en el esmalte, el diente más afectado fue el incisivo central, mostraron opacidad difusa para un 14,9 %, seguido por la presencia de opacidad limitada para un 13,15 % e hipoplasia con un 10,9 %. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p< 0,00001) entre la fisura y el lado contralateral. Los resultados mostraron la alta frecuencia de defectos del esmalte en los pacientes estudiados, principalmente en los casos bilaterales y en los dientes adyacentes al lado de la fisura.
