Abstract Increasing habitat modification and species loss demand consistent efforts to describe and understand biodiversity patterns. The BIOTA/FAPESP Program was created in this context and it has been a successful initiative to promote studies on biodiversity and conservation in Brazil. The BIOTA/Araçá is an interdisciplinary project that provided a detailed evaluation of the biodiversity of Araçá Bay, a coastal seascape located on the North coast of the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil. The bay encompasses multiple habitats, such as beaches, mangroves, rocky shores, and a tidal flat, and provides important ecosystem services. Unfortunately, the bay is the subject of complex social-environmental conflicts that oppose economic, social, and environmental demands (i.e., the expansion of neighboring harbor activities vs. small-scale artisanal fisheries and protection of biodiversity). The present study presents a survey of the benthic species occurring in the different habitats of Araçá Bay, including data obtained during the BIOTA/Araçá project and previous assessments of the area. The benthic species play an important role in marine environments and studying the diversity of these organisms that live associated with the bottom is indispensable for comprehending the environment’s functioning. The macrofauna, meiofauna, and microorganisms associated with soft and hard bottom were listed, and additional information, such as the habitat and geographical distribution, were provided for each species. The checklist includes 826 species, almost 70% recorded during the BIOTA/Araçá project. The most speciose taxa were the annelids (225 spp.), mollusks (194 spp.), and crustaceans (177 spp.). Seven benthic species are endemic to Araçá Bay, 14 are considered threatened, and seven are economically exploited. Furthermore, the bay is the type locality of many taxa, and 11 new benthic species were described based on specimens sampled during the project. Resumo O aumento da modificação dos habitats e da perda de espécies demanda esforços consistentes para descrever e compreender os padrões de biodiversidade. O programa BIOTA/FAPESP foi criado nesse contexto e é uma iniciativa de sucesso para promover estudos em biodiversidade e conservação no Brasil. O BIOTA/Araçá é um projeto interdisciplinar que promoveu uma avaliação detalhada da biodiversidade da Baía do Araçá, um ecossistema costeiro localizado ao Norte do estado de São Paulo, Sudeste do Brasil. A baía engloba múltiplos habitats, tais como praias, manguezais, costões rochosos, e uma planície de maré, e também fornece importantes serviços ecossistêmicos. Infelizmente, a baía está sujeita à conflitos sócio-ambientais complexos que contrastam demandas econômicas, sociais e ambientais (i.e. a expansão das atividades do porto vizinho vs. a pesca artesanal de pequena escala e a proteção da biodiversidade). O presente estudo apresenta um levantamento das espécies bentônicas que ocorrem nos diferentes habitats da Baía do Araçá, incluindo dados obtidos durante o projeto BIOTA/Araçá e de investigações realizadas anteriormente na área. As espécies bentônicas desempenham um papel importante no ambiente marinho, e estudar a diversidade desses organismos que vivem associados ao fundo é indispensável para compreender o funcionamento do meio ambiente. A macrofauna, meiofauna, e microorganismos associados aos fundos consolidado e inconsolidado foram listados, e informações adicionais foram fornecidas para cada espécie, tais como a distribuição geográfica e nos habitats. O checklist inclui 826 espécies, quase 70% registradas durante o projeto BIOTA/Araçá. Os taxa mais especiosos foram os anelídeos (225 spp.), moluscos (194 spp.), e crustáceos (177 spp.). Abstract Femtoplankton and picophytoplankton organisms exert a major role in the balance between producers and consumers and are responsible for a large part of net primary production in the ocean. However, despite their ecological importance, the magnitude and drivers of their temporal dynamics remain largely unexplored. To address this significant knowledge gap, we performed weekly sampling over ten months in a wind-driven coastal upwelling area in the subtropical South Atlantic Ocean. We combined this intensive feldwork with multi-color fow cytometry and statistical modeling to investigate the temporal changes of both femto- and picophytoplankton at multiple temporal scales. We found that femtoplanktonic organisms (including virus-like particles) responded faster (i.e., without a temporal lag) to environmental changes, mainly related to chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and phaeopigment variations. On the other hand, picophytoplanktonic organisms showed a slower response to environmental changes, with positive responses to variation in pH and NH4 concentrations after a one-week lag. Overall, our results demonstrate that the speed of response of planktonic organisms to environmental changes may be dependent on their size, which highlights the importance of environmental variables and biological interactions as drivers of their temporal dynamics.

Resumo A complexidade das interações homem-ambiente em zonas costeiras são desafios à gestão, especialmente no ambiente praial, importante por seus serviços ecossistêmicos e contribuição ao bem-estar humano. Para superar tais desafios, a gestão baseada em ecossistemas propõem uma abordagem mais holística e integrada, com grande contribuição do conhecimento científico. Apresentamos aqui uma revisão da produção científica brasileira relacionada à gestão de praias, com foco na Macrometrópole Paulista. A revisão mostrou que as pesquisas sobre gestão de praias estão em estágio embrionário, sendo focadas em informações biofísicas e sem apresentar indicações para a aplicação do conhecimento gerado em processos de tomada de decisão. Concluímos que é imperativo investir em estudos com uma abordagem interdisciplinar, integrada e aplicada a fim de promover a abordagem ecossistêmica. Tal desafio é mundial, e vem sendo combatido por iniciativas internacionais como a que institui a Década das Nações Unidas da Ciência Oceânica para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável.

Abstract The complexity of human-environment interactions in coastal areas represent management challenges, especially in the beach environment, important for its ecosystem services and contribution to human well-being. To overcome these challenges, ecosystem-based management proposes a more holistic and integrated approach, with a great contribution from scientific knowledge. We present here a review of Brazilian scientific production related to beach management, focusing on the Macrometrópole Paulista. The review showed that research on beach management is in an embryonic stage, being focused on biophysical information and without presenting indications for the application of the knowledge generated in decision-making processes. We conclude that it is imperative to invest in studies with an interdisciplinary, integrated and applied approach in order to promote the ecosystem approach. This is a worldwide challenge, and has been tackled by international initiatives such as the promotion of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Resumen Las interacciones complejas hombre-medio ambiente en las zonas costeras son desafíos de gestión, especialmente para la playa, importante por sus servicios ecosistémicos y contribución al bienestar humano. Para superar-los, la gestión basada en el ecosistema propone un enfoque más holístico e integrado, con una gran contribución del conocimiento científico. Presentamos aquí una revisión de la producción científica brasileña relacionada con la gestión de playas, centrada en la Macrometrópole Paulista. La revisión mostró que la investigación sobre el manejo de playas se encuentra en una etapa embrionaria, centrada en información biofísica y sin presentar indicaciones para la aplicación del conocimiento generado en procesos de toma de decisiones. Concluimos que es imperativo invertir en estudios con un enfoque interdisciplinario, integrado y aplicado para promover el enfoque por ecosistemas. Este desafío es mundial y ha sido abordado por iniciativas internacionales como la Década de las Naciones Unidas de la Ciencia del Océano para el Desarrollo Sostenible.

RESUMO Introdução: Lesões extensas em membros inferiores sempre foram desafiadoras devido a sua difícil resolução. Retalhos livres microcirúrgicos se mostraram como excelente opção cirúrgica, todavia, por carecer de equipe capacitada e serviços estruturados, têm seu uso restrito. Os retalhos fasciocutâneos, especificamente os de fluxo reverso, têm se mostrado excelente opção na abordagem de lesões de membros inferiores, numa alternativa aos complexos retalhos livres microcirúrgicos. Métodos: De janeiro de 2012 a junho de 2015, nove pacientes foram submetidos à reconstrução de membros inferiores com retalhos reversos fasciocutâneos. Todos eram portadores de lesões extensas nos referidos membros. Resultados: Em oito pacientes o resultado foi satisfatório, sem complicações maiores. Em um paciente houve necrose total do retalho. Conclusão: Pela sua relativa simplicidade técnica, os retalhos fasciocutâneos de fluxo reverso vêm se consolidando como opção bastante viável na reconstrução de feridas complexas dos membros inferiores, sendo mais uma opção terapêutica para os pacientes portadores destas lesões. ABSTRACT Introduction: Complex lesions on the lower limbs have always been challenging because of their difficult resolution. Microsurgical free flaps have been an excellent surgical option; however, they have limited use because there are an insufficient number of clinicians trained in such structured services. Fasciocutaneous flaps, specifically reverse flow, have been shown to be an excellent option in treating lower limb injuries as an alternative to complex microsurgical free flaps. Methods: From January 2012 to June 2015, nine patients underwent reconstruction of the lower limbs with reverse fasciocutaneous flaps. All had extensive lesions on these limbs. Results: In eight patients, the results were satisfactory, and there were no major complications. In one patient, there was total necrosis of the flap. Conclusion: Because of the relative technical simplicity of performing such a technique, fasciocutaneous flaps are a viable option for the reconstruction of complex wounds of the lower limbs and are an additional therapeutic option for patients with these lesions. RESUMO As praias brasileiras fornecem bens e serviços ecossistêmicos fundamentais, desempenhando papel importante para a manutenção de populações humanas e para a conservação da biodiversidade. Entretanto, apesar da sua importância ecológica e social, essas praias são amplamente impactadas por alterações humanas, turismo, poluição química e orgânica e mudanças climáticas globais. Esses fatores tornam urgente a melhor percepção e compreensão das mudanças ambientais nas praias brasileiras, assim como de suas consequências na biota. Com o objetivo de promover estudos integrados que possam detectar variações nas características das praias e de outros habitats bentônicos do litoral do Brasil, foi estabelecida a Rede de Monitoramento de Habitats Bentônicos Costeiros (ReBentos). Para fornecer subsídios para o planejamento amostral da ReBentos, realizamos um intenso levantamento sobre os estudos conduzidos nas praias brasileiras e sintetizamos o atual conhecimento relativo a esse ambiente. Os resultados do levantamento são apresentados no presente trabalho e demonstram as principais características físicas, biológicas e socioeconômicas dessas praias. A partir das informações, assim como de nossa experiência e de pesquisas realizadas em diversos países, apontamos estudos e medidas que devem ser considerados prioritários para a avaliação dos efeitos das mudanças regionais e globais sobre as praias brasileiras. Esperamos que esse trabalho possa fornecer subsídios para futuros estudos e que constitua um importante passo em direção à conservação das praias do Brasil e de sua biodiversidade.

ABSTRACT Sandy beaches constitute a key ecosystem and provide socioeconomic goods and services, thereby playing an important role in the maintenance of human populations and in biodiversity conservation. Despite the ecological and social importance of these ecosytems, Brazilian sandy beaches are significantly impacted by human interference, chemical and organic pollution and tourism, as well as global climate change. These factors drive the need to better understand the environmental change and its consequences for biota. To promote the implementation of integrated studies to detect the effects of regional and global environmental change on beaches and on other benthic habitats of the Brazilian coast, Brazilian marine researchers have established The Coastal Benthic Habitats Monitoring Network (ReBentos). In order to provide input for sample planning by ReBentos, we have conducted an intensive review of the studies conducted on Brazilian beaches and summarized the current knowledge about this environment. In this paper, we present the results of this review and describe the physical, biological and socioeconomics features of Brazilian beaches. We have used these results, our personal experience and worldwide literature to identify research projects that should be prioritized in the assessment of regional and global change on Brazilian sandy beaches. We trust that this paper will provide insights for future studies and represent a significant step towards the conservation of Brazilian beaches and their biodiversity.

RESUMO Introdução: Os tumores avançados de cabeça e pescoço ainda têm elevada prevalência no Brasil. A reconstrução de um defeito resultante de ressecção craniofacial é um desafio para o cirurgião plástico. Os retalhos livres são a primeira escolha para essas reconstruções e os retalhos locorregionais têm sido utilizados em casos selecionados. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar uma série de reconstruções com retalhos locorregionais em pacientes submetidos a ressecções oncológicas craniofaciais, demonstrando a aplicabilidade desses retalhos e o resultado final das reconstruções. Métodos: Foram avaliadas, retrospectivamente, quatro reconstruções craniofaciais com retalhos locorregionais de fronte e couro cabeludo. Os pacientes foram operados no Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (HC-UFPE) e assinaram termo de consentimento permitindo a publicação científica de suas fotos e casos clínicos. Resultados: Todas as reconstruções foram bem sucedidas. Não ocorreram casos de infecção local ou meningite, necrose do retalho, fístulas liquóricas ou deiscências. As reconstruções com retalhos locorregionais apresentadas foram seguras e simples para reconstruir defeitos extensos em região craniofacial. Conclusões: Os cirurgiões plásticos podem realizar reconstruções complexas com estes retalhos, demonstrando que ainda há espaço para este tipo de reconstrução. ABSTRACT Introduction: Advanced tumors of the head and neck still have a high prevalence in Brazil. Reconstructing a defect resulting from a craniofacial resection is a challenge for the plastic surgeon. Free flaps are the first choice for these reconstructions, and locoregional flaps have been used in selected cases. The objective of this study was to evaluate a number of reconstructions with locoregional flaps in patients undergoing craniofacial oncologic resection, to demonstrate the applicability of these flaps and the end result of the reconstructions. Methods: We retrospectively studied four craniofacial reconstructions with locoregional flaps on the forehead and scalp. The patients were operated at the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Pernambuco. They signed a consent form allowing the scientific publication of their photographs and clinical case records. Results: All reconstructions were successful. There were no cases of local infection or meningitis, flap necrosis, liquor fistula, or dehiscence. Reconstructions with locoregional flaps were safe and simple to perform for extensive defects in the craniofacial region. Conclusions: Plastic surgeons can perform complex reconstructions with locoregional flaps, demonstrating that there is still room for this type of reconstruction. Homem de 41 anos, com tuberculose disseminada sob terapêutica antibacilar há 3 meses, foi submetido a endoscopia digestiva alta que revelou fistula esofagomediastínica secundária a tuberculose. Foi feito o encerramento com sucesso utilizando endoclips. Está descrita a utilizac¸ão de endoclips em perfurações esofágicas e encerramento de fístulas após complicações cirúrgicas mas, até à data, não foram descritos casos de fístulas sofagomediastinicas secundárias a tuberculose encerradas com endoclips. Esta terapêutica teve um papel adjuvante importante na abordagem deste doente, possibilitando o rápido encerramento e controlo sintomático.

A 41-year-old man, on tuberculostatic treatment for three months for disseminated tuberculosis, developed a tuberculous esophagomediastinal fistula, which was successfully closed with endoscopic clips. Use of endoscopic clips in esophageal perforations and closure of fistulas following surgical complications has been described, but to our knowledge there are no previous reported cases of tuberculous esophagomediastinal fistulas managed with clipping. In this case, endoscopic clips associated with tuberculostatic treatment were crucial allowing fistula closure in a symptomatic patient.

Perenifólias de clima temperado são dominantes em solos pouco férteis. Essa característica é atribuída a mecanismos mais eficientes de economia de nutrientes. O cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale - Anacardiaceae), uma espécie decídua, é nativo de região do Brasil com solos arenosos, enquanto que o urucuzeiro (Bixa orellana - Bixaceae), uma perenifólia, nativa da América tropical, é espontâneo em regiões com solo mais úmido e fértil. As perenifólias apresentam folhas robustas, adaptadas a resistir a adversidades por mais tempo. Compararam-se aspectos físicos das folhas e mecanismos de economia de nutrientes entre as duas espécies, a fim de verificar se a espécie decídua apresenta mecanismos mais eficientes, que expliquem sua ocorrência em locais pouco férteis. Foram também comparados os mecanismos de economia de nitrogênio sob disponibilidades diferentes deste nutriente. Foram avaliados: (i) longevidade foliar, (ii) características físicas das folhas (massa por área e tensão de ruptura), (iii) concentração de compostos nitrogenados nas folhas (nitrogênio, clorofila e proteínas), (iv) mecanismos de conservação de nitrogênio (eficiência de reaproveitamento, proficiência de reaproveitamento e eficiência do uso), (v) mecanismos de conservação de nitrogênio sob disponibilidades diferentes deste elemento. A maior longevidade foliar de A. occidentale foi relacionada a valores maiores de massa foliar específica e tensão de ruptura foliar. A. occidentale apresentou menores concentrações de nitrogênio e proteínas. Sob menor disponibilidade de nitrogênio A. occidentale apresentou maiores valores de proficiência de reaproveitamento e eficiência do uso de nitrogênio e maior longevidade foliar. Essas características podem ter contribuído para a adaptação dessa espécie a locais com solos arenosos mais pobres em nitrogênio.

Evergreen species of temperate regions are dominant in low-nutrient soils. This feature is attributed to more efficient mechanisms of nutrient economy. Nevertheless, the cashew (Anacardium occidentale- Anacardiaceae), a deciduous species, is native to regions in Brazil with sandy soil, whilst the annatto (Bixa orellana- Bixaceae), classified as an evergreen species native to tropical America, grows spontaneously in regions with more humid soils. Evergreens contain robust leaves that can resist adverse conditions for longer. The physical aspects of the leaves and mechanisms of nutrient economy between the two species were compared, in order to verify whether the deciduous species had more efficient mechanisms that might explain its occurrence in regions of low soil fertility. The mechanisms of nitrogen economy were also compared for the two species at available concentrations of this nutrient. The following were analysed: (i) leaf life span, (ii) physical leaf characteristics (leaf mass per area, and rupture strain), (iii) nitrogenous compounds (nitrogen, chlorophyll, and protein), (iv) nitrogen conservation mechanisms (nitrogen resorption efficiency, resorption proficiency, and use efficiency), and (v) nitrogen conservation mechanisms under different availability of this mineral. The higher values of leaf mass per area and leaf rupture strain found in A. occidentale were related to its longer leaf life span. A. occidentale showed lower concentrations of nitrogen and protein in the leaves than B. orellana. Under lower nitrogen availability, A. occidentale had higher nitrogen resorption proficiency, nitrogen use efficiency and leaf life span than B. orellana. These characteristics may contribute to the adaptation of this species to sandy soils with low nitrogen content.
