ABSTRACT Objective: To assess dentists' knowledge from Minas Gerais, Brazil, about dentoalveolar trauma (DT) and their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: An online questionnaire with 34 questions was applied to collect personal data, professional training, self-assessment of experience/knowledge about DT, experience in care provided during the social distancing, and knowledge/conduct. The specific responses were evaluated based on the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT). Descriptive analysis and Pearson's chi-square test were performed. The level of significance was set at p≤0.05. Results: Most professionals (97.7%) had received information on DT, and only 4.6% of the participants considered their knowledge poor or very poor. However, 92.7% felt the need for more information on the subject. Regarding experiences during the pandemic, 55.7% provided trauma care during that period. Forty percent of the consultations were performed in person, and 33.3% of the professionals noted an increase in cases during the pandemic; 56.6% reported that the frequency did not change. The overall mean number of correct answers about DT was 5.29±2.11, indicating an acceptable level of knowledge. The mean percentage of hits for the specific questions was 44.1%. Conclusion: Although the level of knowledge of the dentists evaluated was acceptable, some aspects were deficient, with the need for more information about the IADT guidelines. RESUMO Introdução: O uso de alinhadores transparentes como alternativa aos aparelhos ortodônticos fixos tem se tornado popular, devido às demandas estéticas dos pacientes adultos em busca de tratamento ortodôntico. No entanto, a falta de conhecimento dos ortodontistas sobre as consequências jurídicas de suas atividades, e a falta de evidências científicas sólidas levantam preocupações em relação à responsabilidade civil nesse tipo de tratamento. Muitas vezes, as campanhas de marketing das empresas fabricantes exageram nas promessas de resultados e desconsideram a falta de evidências científicas. O paciente, como consumidor, é protegido pelo Código de Defesa do Consumidor, e o ortodontista é considerado um fornecedor de tratamento. Portanto, ele pode ser responsabilizado por danos causados ao paciente, seja por culpa subjetiva ou objetiva. Objetivo: Identificar, por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, as responsabilidades civis dos ortodontistas e das empresas fabricantes de alinhadores, fornecendo orientações jurídicas básicas para ajudar os profissionais a se protegerem de possíveis demandas judiciais relacionadas ao tratamento com alinhadores ortodônticos. Conclusões: O estudo destaca a importância do conhecimento de noções jurídicas em tratamentos com alinhadores ortodônticos, devendo o profissional resguardar-se juridicamente por meio de contratos individuais por escrito, prevenindo-se de assumir uma obrigação de resultado com o paciente. Além disso, em casos de demandas judiciais, é possível que as empresas fabricantes respondam solidariamente a possíveis danos reclamados pelo paciente. ABSTRACT Introduction: The use of clear aligners as an alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances has become popular due to the aesthetic demands of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment. However, orthodontists’ lack of knowledge about the legal consequences of their activities, and the lack of solid scientific evidence raise concerns regarding civil liability in this type of treatment. Marketing campaigns of manufacturing companies often exaggerate promises of results, and ignore the lack of scientific evidence. Patients, as consumers, are protected by the Consumer Protection Code, whereas orthodontists are considered treatment providers. Therefore, they can be held liable for damage caused to patients, whether by subjective or objective fault. Objective: This article aims to identify the civil responsibilities of orthodontists and aligner manufacturing companies, by means of a literature review, providing basic legal guidance to help professionals protect themselves from possible lawsuits related to treatment with orthodontic aligners. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of knowledge of legal notions in treatments with orthodontic aligners by orthodontists, who should legally safeguard themselves through individual written contracts, avoiding obligation of results. RESUMO Introdução: A remoção de resinas residuais é um procedimento rotineiro na clínica ortodôntica e de grande importância para o resultado final do tratamento. Objetivo: Avaliar os principais métodos para remoção de resinas residuais utilizados por ortodontistas e os principais motivos para a escolha desses métodos. Métodos: Um questionário composto por 21 perguntas: 6 relativas aos dados demográficos e 15 relativas aos métodos de remoção de resinas residuais (brocas ou alicates) foi enviado por e-mail para ortodontistas dos conselhos regionais de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro entre os meses de abril e junho de 2023, com o total de 153 respostas. Resultados: A remoção de resinas residuais é realizada sempre com brocas em alta rotação para 44,7% da amostra e em baixa rotação para 28,7%; 61,3% utilizam irrigação. A broca carbide multilaminada é utilizada por 82,5% dos ortodontistas. Os alicates são sempre utilizados por 12,4%. O alicate removedor de resina com Wídea é utilizado em 39% dos casos. O uso da alta rotação foi justificado pelo menor tempo de trabalho e a escolha por alicates, justificada pelos menores danos ao esmalte. Conclusão: O método de remoção de resinas residual mais utilizado foi a broca carbide multilaminada em alta rotação com irrigação, justificado pelo menor tempo de trabalho. ABSTRACT Introduction: The removal of residual resins is a routine procedure in orthodontic clinics and of great importance to the final result of the treatment. Objective: To evaluate the main methods of residual resin removal used by orthodontists, and the main reasons for choosing these methods. Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions: 6 relating to demographic data and the other 15 relating to two methods used to remove residual resins (drills or pliers) was sent by e-mail to orthodontists registered with the Regional Councils of Dentistry of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) within April and June, 2023. Questionnaires were sent back by 153 professionals. Results: Residual resin removal is always carried out with high speed drill for 44.7% of the sample, and with low speed drill for 28.7%; 61.3% use irrigation. The multi-laminate carbide bur is used by 82.5% of orthodontists. Pliers are always used by 12.4%. Resin-removing pliers with Widia are used in 39% of cases. The use of high speed was justified by the shorter working time, and the choice of pliers was justified by the smaller damage to the tooth enamel. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. RESUMO Introdução: O uso de modelos ortodônticos é essencial no diagnóstico e planejamento em Ortodontia. A demanda por modelos digitais e impressos aumentou entre os profissionais. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a concordância das medições lineares horizontais e verticais feitas em modelos digitais, modelos impressos e medições diretas. Material e Métodos: Foram obtidos escaneamentos intrabucais de trinta indivíduos. As medições digitais foram realizadas usando os arquivos STL; as medições nos modelos impressos foram feitas usando um paquímetro digital, e as medições reais foram feitas diretamente na boca dos respectivos pacientes. Resultados: O teste t de uma amostra mostrou que não houve discrepância entre os conjuntos pareados de medições, com valor de 0 (p>0,05). A avaliação das medições foi feita com análise de Bland-Altman em pares. Os três métodos mostraram concordância nas medições horizontais e verticais. As análises de regressão linear mostraram que não houve viés proporcional nos dados (p>0,05). Conclusão: As medições horizontais e verticais avaliadas mostraram concordância quando feitas em modelos digitais, modelos impressos e diretamente na boca dos pacientes. ABSTRACT Introduction: The use of arch models is essential in diagnosis and planning in orthodontics. The demand for digital and printed models has increased among professionals. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the agreement of horizontal and vertical linear measurements obtained from digital models, printed models, and direct measurements. Materials and Methods: Intraoral scans of 30 individuals were obtained. Digital measurements were performed using the STL files. From printed models, the measurements were done using a digital caliper, and the real measurements were done directly to the mouth of respective patients. Results: The one-sample t test showed no discrepancy between the paired sets of measurements, with the value of 0 (p>0.05). The evaluation of the measurements was done using Bland-Altman analysis in pairs. The three methods showed agreement in horizontal and vertical measurements. Linear regression analyses showed no proportional bias in the data (p>0.05). Abstract Objective: To evaluate the ability of the variables Muscle Mass percentage (%MM), Body Fat percentage (%BF), Phase Angle (PhA), and Standardized Phase Angle (SPhA) to predict overall survival rates in individuals with surgically treated HNC. Methods: A prospective cohort study of surgically treated HNC patients was carried out between 2017 and 2022 at a cancer referral center in Feira de Santana, Bahia. All subjects were seen by an experienced dietitian the week before surgery. During this visit, patients had their sociodemographic and clinical data collected, as well as anthropometric measurements (weight and height) and BIA variables. In this study, postoperative overall 5-year survival was defined as the time in months between the date of surgery and the date of death, regardless of the cause of death. Patients were followed up after surgery until death. Results: Seventy-eight older adult patients were consecutively included. Patients had a median age of 65.5-years, were mostly men (83.3%), and most had low education levels (62.3%) and low household income, ranging from zero (19.2%) to the minimum wage (60.2%). They were mostly alcohol drinkers (91%) and tobacco smokers (87.2%). Glottic cancer was diagnosed in 48.7% of patients, with 44.8% of cases with stage-IV disease. Forty (51.2%) deaths were recorded in the follow-up period, with a median survival time of 39 months. Variables %MM, %BF, and SPhA were not significantly different between groups (alive vs. dead patients). PhA was considered an independent predictor of overall survival, with an accuracy of 69% (95% CI 0.57 - 0.80). When comparing survival curves, patients with a preoperative PhA < 6.8° were more than twice as likely to die during follow-up (HR = 2.38; p = 0.02; 95% CI 1.14 - 4.97). Abstract The social isolation measures adopted during the critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic led children to spend most of their time at home. Isolation may alter the pattern of traumatic dental injury occurrences, inasmuch as studies point out that most traumatic accidents occur at home. Considering this scenario and the influence of emergency management on the prognosis of the injury, the aim of this study was to evaluate the experience of traumatic dental injuries in children before and during the pandemic, and the knowledge of this topic by the children’s guardians. This cross-sectional study was conducted with guardians of children aged 0 to 6 years, residing in Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil. The guardians answered an online questionnaire addressing personal information, traumatic dental injury experience before and during the pandemic, and knowledge of this topic. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed using Pearson’s chi-square test at a 5% significance level. The total sample consisted of 343 volunteers. A total of 95 and 92 injuries were reported before and during the pandemic, respectively; the home was the place of greatest occurrence. Most volunteers (88.1%) agreed that traumatic dental injuries are emergency situations, and were aware that the tooth/fragment had to be taken to the dentist after a fracture or avulsion (97.4%). This study revealed that the traumatic dental injury experience was similar before and during the pandemic, and that the volunteers had satisfactory knowledge, especially in recognizing the importance of immediate attention for a more favorable prognosis of these injuries. Abstract The consequences of traumatic dental injuries can be even more serious when their emergency management procedures are inadequate. Since traumatic accidents frequently occur at school, it is crucial that teachers be knowledgeable enough to assist an injured child. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of the elementary school teachers of a Brazilian city toward dental trauma in permanent teeth, and its emergency practices. A combination of convenience and snowball sampling methods was used. An online questionnaire was distributed through social media, consisting of three parts: demographic characteristics and professional information; previous experiences and attitudes toward dental trauma; teachers’ knowledge of this subject. Descriptive and statistical analyses were carried out. Pearson chi-squared test (p < 0.05) was used. A total of 217 teachers participated in the study. The power of the sample was 95%. Half of the teachers had already witnessed a dental trauma incident involving students, and 70.5% never received any information on the subject. The teachers who were provided previous information were the ones who opted to search for the tooth fragment (p=0.036) in cases of crown fracture, and for the lost tooth (p = 0.025) in cases of avulsion. They were also the ones who chose to wash the tooth in running water (p = 0.018), and look for a dentist in the first 30 or 60 minutes after the trauma (p = 0.026). Resumo Antecedentes Migrânea afeta um bilhão de pessoas em todo o mundo e mais de 30 milhões de brasileiros; além disso, é um distúrbio subdiagnosticado e subtratado. Objetivo Sabe-se sobre a necessidade de difundir o conhecimento sobre o tratamento profilático da migrânea; por isso, a Sociedade Brasileira de Cefaleias (SBCe) nomeou um comitê de autores com o objetivo de estabelecer um consenso com recomendações sobre o tratamento profilático da migrânea episódica com base em artigos da literatura mundial, assim como da experiência pessoal. Métodos As reuniões foram realizadas inteiramente online, com a participação de 12 grupos que revisaram e escreveram sobre as categorias farmacológicas dos medicamentos e, ao final, reuniram-se para a leitura e conclusão do documento. As classes de medicamentos estudadas na parte II deste Consenso foram: anti-hipertensivos, inibidores seletivos de recaptação de serotonina, inibidores de recaptação de serotonina e noradrenalina, bloqueadores dos canais de cálcio, outros medicamentos e politerapia racional. Resultados Desta lista de medicamentos, apenas o candesartan foi estabelecido como eficaz no controle da migrânea episódica. Flunarizina, venlafaxina, duloxetina e pizotifeno foram definidos como provavelmente eficazes, enquanto lisinopril, enalapril, escitalopram, fluvoxamina, quetiapina, atorvastatina, sinvastatina, ciproheptadina e melatonina foram possivelmente eficazes na profilaxia da doença. Abstract Background Migraine affects 1 billion people worldwide and > 30 million Brazilians; besides, it is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disorder. Objective The need to disseminate knowledge about the prophylactic treatment of migraine is known, so the Brazilian Headache Society (SBCe, in the Portuguese acronym) appointed a committee of authors with the objective of establishing a consensus with recommendations on the prophylactic treatment of episodic migraine based on articles from the world literature as well as from personal experience. Methods Meetings were held entirely online, with the participation of 12 groups that reviewed and wrote about the pharmacological categories of drugs and, at the end, met to read and finish the document. The drug classes studied in part II of this Consensus were: antihypertensives, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, other drugs, and rational polytherapy. Results From this list of drugs, only candesartan has been established as effective in controlling episodic migraine. Flunarizine, venlafaxine, duloxetine, and pizotifen were defined as likely to be effective, while lisinopril, enalapril, escitalopram, fluvoxamine, quetiapine, atorvastatin, simvastatin, cyproheptadine, and melatonin were possibly effective in prophylaxis of the disease. Resumo A extração de dentes para obtenção de espaço nos arcos dentários é uma estratégia rotineiramente utilizada em Ortodontia, porém a movimentação de dentes para os locais de extrações pode estar associada à falhas na estabilidade dos dentes e abertura do ponto de contato, gerando prejuízo aos tecidos periodontais. Objetivo: Avaliar a condição periodontal de caninos e segundos pré-molares superiores com e sem ponto de contato entre si de indivíduos submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico associado à extração dos primeiros pré-molares superiores. Foram selecionados caninos, primeiros e segundos pré-molares superiores de indivíduos submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico sem extração (30 hemiarcos - grupo controle) ou com extração dos primeiros pré-molares superiores cujos caninos e os segundos pré-molares apresentavam contato interproximal (16 hemiarcos - grupo 1) ou diastema (17 hemiarcos - grupo 2). Nas superfícies distal dos caninos e mesial dos pré-molares foram avaliados parâmetros clínicos e radiográficos para determinar o efeito da movimentação dos dentes para o local de extração e da ausência de ponto de contato interproximal nos tecidos periodontais. Os grupos não apresentaram diferença significativa para a idade e o tempo de pós-tratamento. O grupo 1 apresentou valores mais desfavoráveis em relação ao grupo controle para o índice de placa em caninos e pré-molares e para a profundidade de sondagem em caninos (distal e média) e em pré-molares (lingual e média), além de uma tendência de maior perda de inserção clínica (lingual e média) nos pré-molares. O índice de placa nos caninos do grupo 1 também foi significativamente maior do que no grupo 2. Os grupos 2 e controle não apresentaram diferença significativa. A ausência de ponto de contato entre os caninos e os segundos pré-molares superiores não afetou significativamente a situação periodontal desses dentes.
Abstract The aim of study was to evaluate periodontal conditions of upper canines and second premolars with and without proximal contact of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment associated to extractions of the upper first premolars. The study selected upper canines and premolars of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment without extractions (30 hemiarches - control group), or with extraction of the upper first premolars and whose canines and second premolars had interproximal contact (16 hemiarches - group 1) or diastema (17 hemiarches - group 2). Clinical (plaque index, probing depth, gingival bleeding index, height of the gingival margin, clinical attachment loss and gingival clefts) and radiographic (crest height, bone height and bone-crest discrepancy) parameters of the distal surfaces of canines and mesial surfaces of premolars were evaluated. Group 1 had worse results when compared to the control group for the levels of plaque in canines and premolars and for probing depth in canines (distal and mean) and in premolars (lingual and mean), as well as increasing tendency of clinical attachment loss (lingual and mean) in premolars. Plaque level in canines in group 1 was also significantly higher than in group 2. There was no difference between group 2 and the control group. The lack of proximal contact between canines and second premolars did not significantly affect their periodontal characteristics.

Abstract Objective: To develop and validate a questionnaire to measure the vulnerability of orthodontists, measuring the risks of being involved in civil liability lawsuits. Material and Methods: In-depth interviews were performed with three groups: G1- law professionals, G2 – orthodontists, and G3 – orthodontic patients. From the analysis of the content of Bardin, domains for the construction of the first version of the 53-question questionnaire were identified. The questionnaire was submitted to experts for validation, inclusion and exclusion of questions, but maintaining the 53-question format. It was submitted to the test-retest phases and verification of internal consistency. Results: 247 professionals answered the final version of the questionnaire. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 88.8%. Cronbach's alpha was 0.946, with high internal consistency. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett’s tests confirmed internal consistency showing the values of 0.909 and significance of <0.001, respectively. From the total score and factorial analysis, the sample was divided into three groups of judicial vulnerability. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the questionnaire is a valid tool to measure the risks of involvement in civil liability lawsuits by orthodontists. It presented a multidimensional character and might be applied as well as face to face or online, without prejudice to quality.

Resumo Introdução A cirurgia é uma das opções mais usadas no tratamento do carcinoma epidermoide de cabeça e pescoço. Nos pacientes cirúrgicos, o uso do lactato arterial para avaliação de hipoxemia e de quadros inflamatórios graves é bem fundamentado. Entretanto, existem poucos estudos sobre o seu uso em pacientes com carcinoma epidermoide de cabeça e pescoço. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar se o lactato arterial sérico no 1° dia de pós‐operatório seria um preditor de complicações pós‐operatórias nas cirurgias do carcinoma epidermoide de cabeça e pescoço. Método Trata‐se de uma coorte prospectiva, que avaliou 44 pacientes adultos, de ambos os gêneros, com carcinoma epidermoide de cabeça e pescoço, submetidos a cirurgia associada ao esvaziamento cervical em monobloco como tratamento inicial. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos, segundo a presença ou não de complicações pós‐operatórias: complicados (Clavien‐Dindo II a V) e sem complicações (Clavien‐Dindo 0-I). Na comparação dos dados contínuos, foi usado o teste t de Student e as suas variantes. Na correlação dos dados, usou‐se o teste de Pearson ou Spearman. Valores de p inferiores a 0,05 (p < 0,05) foram considerados estatisticamente significativos. Resultados Dos pacientes, 59% (n = 26/44) desenvolveram complicações pós‐operatórias. O lactato sérico foi significantemente maior no grupo com complicações em relação aos pacientes sem complicações, respectivamente 2,15 mmoL/L (1,10-3,90) e 1,59 mmoL/L (0,70-3,44); p = 0,03. A acurácia prognóstica do lactato arterial foi de 69% (95% IC 54%-82%; p = 0,03), estimada pela curva ROC. Foi identificado um cut‐off> 1,7 mmoL/L, com sensibilidade de 65,38% e especificidade de 66,67%. Abstract Introduction Surgery is one of the most frequently used options in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. In surgical patients, the use of arterial lactate to assess hypoxemia and severe inflammatory states is well-founded. However, there are few studies on its use in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the serum arterial lactate level on the 1st postoperative day would be a predictor of postoperative complications in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma surgeries. Methods This is a prospective cohort, which evaluated 44 adult patients of both genders, with HNSCC, who underwent surgery associated with monobloc neck dissection as an initial treatment. Patients were divided into two groups, according to the presence or absence of postoperative complications: with complication (Clavien-Dindo II-V) and without complications (Clavien-Dindo 0-I). Student’s t-test and its variants were used to compare continuous data. Pearson’s or Spearman’s test was used to correlate the data and p values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results A total of 59% of the patients (n = 26/44) developed postoperative complications. Serum lactate was significantly higher in the group with complications when compared to patients without complications, respectively 2.15 mmoL/L (1.10-3.90) and 1.59 mmoL/L (0.70-3.44); p = 0.03. The prognostic accuracy of arterial lactate was 69% (95% CI: 54%-82%; p = 0.03), estimated by the ROC curve. A cut-off >1.7 mmoL/L was identified, with a sensitivity of 65.38% and specificity of 66.67%. Abstract Napier grass is a perennial tropical forage that is used in beef and dairy production systems. Despite its significance in animal nutrition, molecular information available, such as microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, is limited. Using an assembled transcriptome, 50 novel SSR markers were developed, of which 21 were found to be polymorphic. These polymorphic markers were tested for DNA fingerprinting of Embrapa cultivars, five of which revealed distinct allele patterns for cultivar identification. SSR markers 05, 17, and 44 identified a unique pattern in the BRS Kurumi cultivar. The BRS Capiaçu cultivar was identified using SSR markers 17, 43, and 44. The Pioneiro cultivar exhibited a rare fragment amplification pattern using SSR marker 46, while SSR marker 44 revealed a distinct allele in the BRS Canará cultivar. SSR marker panels could be utilized as DNA fingerprinting tools to assist in cultivar identification.
