RESUMO Objetivo: examinar os desafios contemporâneos enfrentados pelo método survey no campo da administração, em especial no marketing, devido ao surgimento de novas tecnologias e mudanças nos comportamentos dos respondentes. Provocações: com a ascensão da inteligência artificial, o método survey tradicional começa a ser questionado. Questões como a validade das respostas, a fadiga dos respondentes e a proliferação de dados comportamentais obtidos por meios automatizados questionam a eficácia do survey na captura de comportamentos reais dos consumidores. Além disso, novas legislações podem trazer restrições capazes de afetar a coleta de dados via survey. Conclusões: apesar de não estar obsoleto, o método survey deve se reinventar para permanecer relevante. A integração com novas tecnologias, como a inteligência artificial, e a combinação com métodos qualitativos são caminhos sugeridos para melhorar a eficácia das pesquisas em um ambiente com forte avanço tecnológico. ABSTRACT Objective: to examine the contemporary challenges faced by the survey method in the administration field, particularly in marketing, due to the emergence of new technologies and changes in respondent behavior. Provocations: with the rise of artificial intelligence, the traditional survey method is increasingly being questioned. Issues such as response validity, respondent fatigue, and proliferation of behavioral data obtained through automated means cast doubt on the survey’s effectiveness in capturing actual consumer behavior. Additionally, new legislation may introduce restrictions that could impact data collection via surveys. Conclusions: although not obsolete, the survey method must reinvent itself to remain relevant. ABSTRACT Past research on product upgrades has focused either on understanding who and when will upgrade or on figuring out why consumers will upgrade, but seldom on all. It has also neglected the interplay between these matters with decision context and timing. This manuscript depicts a comprehensive approach where, for the first time, product characteristics, individual differences, process, and contextual variables are analyzed on a predictive model of real product upgrades, identified through the systematic collection of primary data from a panel of smartphone consumers. We tested one traditional linear logistic regression model and two types of non-linear, state-of-the-art machine-learning models (extreme gradient boosting and deep learning) to explain upgrading behavior. Results provide an integrative, yet parsimonious, product-upgrade model showing the importance of resources; news about the smartphone brand; sentimental value; predicted, current, and remembered enjoyment; update capacity; and how much the smartphone meets the user’s current needs as the most relevant variables to determine which consumers are more prone to upgrade their smartphones. Our findings advance upgrade decision theory by taking a holistic approach to the phenomenon and bridging different theoretical accounts of the replacement decision literature.

Resumo Este artigo analisa se a interação com amigos, em situações de compra e consumo, é capaz de influenciar o nível de prazer que prevemos que vamos sentir e o prazer que efetivamente sentimos com um produto após a compra. Ou seja, estuda-se o efeito da sociabilização do consumidor no processo de previsão da adaptação e na adaptação hedônica real subsequente. Foram realizados três experimentos (um deles dividido em duas partes) independentes e complementares em ambiente online (Mechanical Turk) e em laboratório. Os resultados confirmaram a hipótese de que a previsão da adaptação é menor nas situações de consumo que envolvem a interação social, quando comparadas àquelas sem interação social. A sociabilização do consumidor exerceu influência, também, sobre a adaptação hedônica real, confirmando a hipótese de que a adaptação é menor nas situações de consumo envolvendo sociabilização. Em conjunto, evidenciou-se que, quando há interação social, os consumidores preveem e vivenciam mais prazer do que quando não há interação social. Esta pesquisa estende a teoria na área de comportamento do consumidor, especialmente sobre a adaptação hedônica, além de trazer implicações para empresas e consumidores, apontando uma forma prática de redução da adaptação hedônica em situações de consumo: a interação social.

Abstract This article analyzes if social interaction during shopping and consumption situations influences the level of pleasure a person both anticipates during and actually feels after shopping. Specifically, the paper analyzes the effect of consumer socialization on the hedonic adaptation process and in the actual subsequent hedonic adaptation. Three independent and complementary experiments (one divided in two parts) were carried out in an online environment (Mechanical Turk) and in a laboratory. The results confirmed the hypotheses that the hedonic adaptation forecast is weaker in consumption situations when there is social interaction, when compared to those without social interaction. Consumer socialization also effects actual hedonic adaptation, confirming the hypothesis that adaptation is weaker when there is social interaction. Overall, this research shows that, consumers forecast and actually feel stronger pleasure when there is social interaction, as compared to when there is no social contact in consumption situations. This research extends consumer behavior theory associated with hedonic adaptation, bringing new insights to companies and consumers by showing a practical way of reducing hedonic adaptation in consumption situations: social interaction.

Through this article we examine ways through which consumers can take advantage of marketers' priming attempts and make better decisions. Specifically, we investigate what happens when individuals are made aware of primes that may potentially improve their performance. Using an Embedded Figures Test, we demonstrate that individuals can be consciously primed into an analytic thinking mindset and perform better when they believe that the prime will enhance performance. Individuals are able to successfully ignore the prime when they believe that the prime hinders performance. Utilizing both holistic and analytic primes and by alternating the valence of the prime's potential outcome, we are able to disentangle the conscious effects of primes from demand effects. We discuss how these findings may lead to and suggest avenues for future research.

Este trabalho analisa, a partir do enfoque oferecido pela Teoria de Consumo de Status (TCS), como são formados os hábitos de consumo de crianças de classes altas e baixas brasileiras, critica o Global Trickle-down Model (GTDM), e analisa a precisão das recentes mudanças teóricas sugeridas por Üstüner e Holt (2010), quanto às inadequações da TCS aos países em desenvolvimento. Para isso, realizamos uma pesquisa teórico-empírica, por meio de 36 entrevistas em profundidade, com crianças entre 9 e 12 anos incompletos, pertencentes às camadas baixas e altas da população. Após análise de conteúdo, apresentamos e discutimos os resultados através de categorias analíticas que os sintetizam: Agentes de Influência; Relação com o Universo de Possibilidades e Impossibilidades de cada Classe; e Diferenciação Social. Para concluir, comparamos os conceitos apresentados pela TCS com os resultados encontrados no contexto de classes altas e baixas brasileiras, além de avaliarmos a adequação do GTDM a esse contexto. As principais conclusões da pesquisa são que os pares exercem mais influência na formação dos hábitos de consumo das crianças de classes mais altas; a mídia tem impacto diferente de acordo com a posição socioeconômica da criança; e, ao contrário do que preconizava a teoria sobre o tema, não há um aprisionamento dos desejos de consumo das crianças das classes baixas às suas condições de existência.

Grounded on Status Consumption Theory (SCT) approach, this article analyzes how the consumption habits of children of high and low Brazilian social classes are constituted, it also criticizes the Global Trickle-down Model (GTDM) and analyzes the precision of the recent theoretical modifications suggested by Üstüner and Holt (2010) concerning the inadequacy of SCT to the developing countries. We carried on a theoretical-empirical research based on 36 in-depth interviews with children between 9 and 12 years old, of high or low classes. Based on a content analysis, we present and discuss the results through the following analytical categories: influence agents, relation with the universe of possibilities and impossibilities of each class, and social distinction. To conclude, we compare the TCS concepts with the results found in the context of high and low Brazilian classes and evaluate the adequacy of GTDM to this context. The research's main finding are that peers have greater influence on the habits of children of higher classes; the media has a different impact depending of the child socioeconomic position; and, against previous theory, consumer desires of lower class children are not prisoned by their existence conditions.

This article analyzes the relationship between strategies of standardization and adaptation of the marketing mix and performance in an international context. We carried out a meta-analysis on a sample of 23 studies published between 1992 and 2010. The sample was analyzed based on measures of the effect size (ES) - or the strength of the relation (Wolf, 1986) - between standardization/adaptation and performance. The results suggest the existence of a medium strength (ES ranging from .133 to .209) for the relationship considered. The results support the existence of a positive impact of both marketing mix adaptation and standardization on performance. However, our results suggest that companies should slightly emphasize the marketing mix adaptation (ES mean = .168) instead of standardizing it (ES mean = .134) when entering in a new international market. Results also indicate that, among the adaptation choices, price (ES = .209) should be the first element of the marketing mix to be adapted, followed by promotion (ES = .155), product (ES = .154), and distribution (ES = .141). Finally, we suggest some new research paths, such as the use of quantitative methods to compare degrees of adaptation to be applied to different segments, regions, and sectors, among other suggestions.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar criticamente as representações sobre a infância desenvolvidas nas ações de marketing de uma empresa de vestuário infantil, avaliando se estas podem contribuir para a "adultização" do consumidor infantil. O objeto de estudo foram as duas últimas campanhas de comunicação (outono/inverno 2008 e primavera/verão 2008/2009) da Lilica Ripilica, uma conhecida marca no Brasil no segmento infantil feminino. Utilizamos a metodologia de análise crítica de discurso (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), em três etapas: a análise textual (uma "descrição" dos textos), a análise processual (análise conjunta dos textos e da prática discursiva) e a análise social (compreensão dos efeitos socioculturais da prática discursiva). Os resultados de tal análise demonstram que o discurso da marca procura "ensinar" às crianças padrões de beleza e de comportamentos associados ao mundo adulto, o que reforça a indissociação criança/adulto. Esse fenômeno já foi identificado em literatura acerca da Idade Média (ARIÈS, 1981). A contribuição deste trabalho se refere à observação dessa mesma indissociação, porém, a partir de outra perspectiva: a "adultização" de crianças como forma de sociabilização destas para o mercado de consumo. A pesquisa mostra que um novo modelo de adulto em miniatura parece se construir mediado pelas ações de marketing.

The main purpose of this paper is to critically analyze childhood representations that appear in a children clothes company's marketing actions, to reach an understanding of this actions' contribution to the "premature adulthood" of the child consumer. We analyze two communication campaigns (Autumn/Winter 2008 and Spring/Summer 2008/2009) of Lilica Ripilica, a well-known brand in the Brazilian children market. To do this we use the method of critical discourse analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), in three stages: textual analysis (a "discription" of the texts); processual analysis (analyzing texts and the discourse practice); and social analysis (understanding the social and cultural effects of the discourse practice). As a result, our analyzes reveal that the brand's discourse aims to "teach" children beauty standards and behaviours that are related to the adult world, something which reinforces the indissociation between child/adult. A similar reality was indentified in the Middle Age literature (ARIÈS, 1981). This paper's contribution involves the observation of this same indissociation, but in a diferent perspective: the "premature adulthood" of children as a way of socialization in the consumer market. The research shows that a new model of miniature adult seems to be constructed by the actions of marketing.

Neste artigo realizamos uma análise crítica da gênese histórica da área de marketing até sua constituição atual, com um foco principal: verificar se as necessidades e os desejos dos clientes são base consistente da formação histórica, discursiva, do marketing ou, apenas, retórica legitimadora para a atuação da área. Adotamos uma orientação filosófico-epistemológica baseada na teoria do discurso proposta por Michel Foucault, que nos permitiu constatar que a centralidade das necessidades e dos desejos dos clientes no discurso contemporâneo do marketing é resultado de uma série de transformações e disputas históricas pela hegemonia de uma determinada idéia ou ponto de vista, mas sempre ancorada em condições socioeconômicas, ambientais, favoráveis às transformações ocorridas. Em outras palavras, concluímos que as transformações discursivas, constituintes da área, foram o resultado de um processo produzido social e historicamente, tendo ocorrido muito mais como um resultado de mudanças na economia e no mundo empresarial do que como uma espécie de "vocação" natural do marketing.

In this paper we do a critical analysis of marketing field since its beginning until today aimed at analysing if customers' needs and desires are a consistent marketing base on marketing historical discourse or just a legitimating rhetoric. We have adopted an philosophical-epistemological orientation based on Michel Foucault's discourse theory that allowed us to verify the core role of needs and desires concepts on marketing is a result of a series of transformations and disputes towards hegemony of ideas or ways of seeing but always anchored on favorable socioeconomic scenario. Marketing discourse transformation happened more as a result of social and historical process than as a natural 'vocation' of the field.

Este artigo realiza uma avaliação crítica da aplicação de Modelagem em Equações Estruturais no Brasil, a partir de um estudo comparativo entre os trabalhos publicados na sub-área de marketing do ENANPAD e nas seções de marketing de três dos principais periódicos de administração do Brasil: RAE, RAUSP e RAC, de 1994 a 2003. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados às estatísticas que resumem a utilização de SEM em artigos publicados nos principais journals internacionais de marketing, tabulados e apresentados por Baumgartner e Homburg (1996). O texto se inicia por uma breve visão geral de SEM - surgimento, funções e características, etapas principais, aplicações, aspectos essenciais e alguns aspectos problemáticos da sua utilização. Após a discussão sobre os critérios utilizados para tabular os artigos, o panorama do uso de SEM no Brasil é apresentado e comparado com as estatísticas dos trabalhos publicados em âmbito internacional. O texto é encerrado com uma avaliação geral da qualidade da utilização desta abordagem no Brasil e apresentação de sugestões para futuras aplicações da modelagem de equações estruturais em marketing.

This article investigates the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in the published articles on the main brazilian business administration conference (ENANPAD) marketing track and also on the marketing section of the most important brazilian business administration journals (RAE, RAUSP and RAC) in the last ten years: 1994 to 2003. In addition to the analysis of the published articles, the authors present a comparison with Baumgartner and Homburg's (1996) findings in their investigation on SEM usage, which explored the papers published at main international marketing journals. The text begins with a brief overview of SEM - its origins, functions and characteristics, main steps, some applications, its essentials and some problematic aspects of the method. Then the criteria used to analyze the papers are presented. The results are shown in detail, including a comparison with Baumgartner and Homnburg's findings. This article ends with an overall evaluation about the quality of the use of SEM in Brazil, along with some suggestions for future applications of SEM in marketing.

O presente trabalho desenvolve e testa um modelo teórico baseado em hipóteses que analisam a relação entre a confiança, o valor percebido e a lealdade de usuários de Internet Banking em situações de trocas relacionais de serviço no Brasil. Uma pesquisa em todo o País com 611 usuários de Internet Banking de um grande banco de varejo e as análises através da técnica de Modelagem em Equações Estruturais validam, de forma geral, o modelo testado. As relações testadas no modelo levam à conclusão de que a confiança tem forte impacto no valor percebido pelos clientes que, por sua vez, também têm forte impacto na lealdade desses clientes à empresa. Valor foi identificado como uma variável mediadora parcial da relação entre confiança e lealdade. São apresentadas, ainda, conclusões acerca da atuação das empresas e sugestões para pesquisas futuras.

This paper is aimed on the development and test of a theoretical model based on hypotheses that analyze end-customers' trust, perceived value and loyalty on Internet Banking services relational exchanges in Brazil. Tested model is validated using structural equation modeling based on survey results with 611 Internet Banking end-customers of a major brazilian retail bank. Tested hypotheses show that trust has a strong impact on customers' perceived value which also has a strong impact on customers' loyalty. Perceived value was identified as a partial mediator variable on the trust-loyalty relationship. Managerial and future research suggestions are also presented.
