ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the peritoneal histopathological changes and culture after the use of intravenous meropenem and intra-abdominal inoculation of 10% aqueous extract of anacardiaceae, in elderly rat model after autogenous fecal peritonitis induced. Methods: Thirty 18-month-old Wistar rats received induction of autogenous fecal peritonitis and then were stratified into two groups: study I, treated with meropenem (40 mg/kg); and study II, treated with meropenem (40 mg/kg) and intraperitoneal 10% aqueous extract of anacardiaceae. Animals were monitored for 15 days until euthanasia. Peritoneal fragments were collected for histopathological and culture. The study was approved by Ethics Committee. Results: None study-II animals died, while in study I, one died before euthanasia. In study II, 20% of the animals showed histopathological changes, none positive peritoneal culture, but one blood culture was positive (10%). In study I, 50% of the animals presented histopathological changes, 40% positive peritoneal cultures, and 50% positive blood cultures. All results when evaluated in the morbidity score showed better outcome for study-II group (p = 0,175). Conclusion: The use of meropenem associated with intraperitoneal 10% aqueous anacardiaceae extract after induction of autogenous fecal peritonitis in elderly rats showed better outcome in the set of histopathological changes, negative peritoneal and blood cultures, when compared with the use of meropenem isolated. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores clínicos associados à mortalidade em pacientes idosos submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico para correção de fraturas do quadril. Métodos: Estudo observacional e retrospectivo de análise de prontuários de 67 pacientes (idade superior a 60 anos). Foram incluídos indivíduos de ambos os sexos, submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico para correção de fraturas do quadril, entre 2019 e 2020, no Hospital São Paulo. Foram analisadas as variáveis: idade, sexo, presença de comorbidades, região do quadril acometido e mecanismo de trauma. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas pelo software SPSS. Resultados: A idade média dos participantes foi de 78,12 ± 9,80 anos, e 80,6% da amostra era constituída por mulheres. Houve maior prevalência de fraturas do quadril no lado direito (52,2%), na região transtrocantérica (53,7%) e causada por queda sem desnível (88,1%). Hipertensão arterial sistêmica (77,6%), diabetes mellitus (37,3%) e demência (16,4%) foram frequentes. A prevalência de óbito após a fratura foi de 17,9%, sendo associada a maior tempo de internação hospitalar após a cirurgia (p = 0,028). Conclusão: A prevalência de mortalidade dos pacientes com fratura do quadril submetidos à cirurgia foi de 17,9%. ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluating clinical factors associated with mortality in older patients who underwent surgical correction of hip fractures. Methods: This observational and retrospective study analyzed the medical records of 67 patients (aged older than 60 years), both men and women, who underwent surgical correction of hip fractures from 2019 to 2020 at Hospital São Paulo. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, presence of comorbidities, affected hip region, and trauma mechanism. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software. Results: The mean age of patients was 78.12 ± 9.80 years and 80.6% of the sample were women. The prevalence of hip fractures on the right side (52.2%), in the transtrochanteric region (53.7%), and due to fall on the same level (88.1%) was higher. Systemic arterial hypertension (77.6%), diabetes mellitus (37.3%), and dementia (16.4%) were frequent comorbidities. The prevalence of death after fracture was 17.9% and it was associated with longer hospital stay after surgery (p = 0.028). Conclusion: The prevalence of mortality of patients with hip fractures who underwent surgery was 17.9%. Abstract Purpose: To investigate cardiac changes in young rats, whose mothers underwent autogenic fecal peritonitis, during organogenesis phase and to evaluate the role of intravenous administration of moxifloxacin and dexamethasone in preventing infection-related cardiac changes. Methods: A prospective histomorphometric study was performed on 29 hearts of Wistar four-month old rats. Animals were divided into three groups: Negative Control Group (NCG) included 9 subjects from healthy mothers; Positive Control Group (PCG) included 10 subjects from mothers with fecal peritonitis (intra-abdominal injection of 10% autogenic fecal suspension in the gestational period) and did not receive any treatment; and Intervention Group (IG), with 10 animals whose infected mothers received moxifloxacin and dexamethasone treatment 24 hours after induction of fecal peritonitis. Results: Nuclear count was higher in the IG group as compared to PCG (p = 0.0016) and in NCG as compared to PCG (p = 0.0380). There was no significant difference in nuclear counts between NCG and IG. Conclusion: Induced autogenic fecal peritonitis in pregnant Wistar rats determined myocardial changes in young rats that could be avoided by the early administration of intravenous moxifloxacin and dexamethasone.

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the response of aging rats with sepsis to two different antibiotic regimens. Methods: The study was conducted with 30 aging rats (18 month-old) with autologous feces peritonitis. The animals were divided into three groups: Group 0 received no therapeutic intervention (control), while Group 1 received a single dose of 40 mg/kg meropenem and Group 2 received a single dose of 20 mg/kg moxifloxacin. The intervention in both Groups was made 6 hours after induction of peritonitis. The animals were followed up to 15 days for evaluating morbidity and mortality. The weights at baseline were similar in all groups. Results: At the end of follow-up, weight loss was significantly greater (p=0.0045) in Group 0 (non-intervention controls). Culture from a blood sample at the end of follow-up was positive in all the animals in Group 0, in two animals in Group 1 and in four animals in Group 2. Morbidity/mortality was significantly higher in Group 0 compared to both Groups 1 and 2 (p=0.003) but the scores were not significantly different between Groups 1 and 2 (p=0.6967). Conclusion: Both antibiotic regimens rendered promising results for the treatment of fecal peritonitis.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o impacto das doenças oculares sobre a qualidade de vida de uma população idosa do sertão de Pernambuco, localizado na região nordeste do Brasil. MÉTODOS: Foram entrevistados 580 indivíduos acima de 59 anos, por meio do questionário de avaliação de qualidade de vida "Visual Functioning Questionnaire" (VFQ). Todos os indivíduos foram submetidos a exame oftalmológico completo. Os resultados das variáveis quantitativas foram expressos por suas médias e desvios- padrão. Os resultados das variáveis qualitativas foram expressos por suas frequências absolutas e relativas. RESULTADOS: A média de idade foi de 70 ± 8,1 anos. Cerca de 86,0% dos entrevistados declararam ser analfabetos ou ter o ensino fundamental incompleto. As principais queixas foram: baixa visual (71,1%) e ardor/prurido (69,0%). A acuidade visual não era normal em 37,4% dos idosos. Por volta de 75,0% dos entrevistados relataram ter saúde regular ou ruim, e 77,0% diziam ter uma visão regular ou ruim. A qualidade de vida foi considerada pior conforme a piora da condição visual do idoso. CONCLUSÃO: O déficit visual representou um impacto negativo sobre a qualidade de vida dos idosos do sertão Pernambucano.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of visual impairment on the quality of life of the elderly population living in the western countryside of Pernambuco State, located in northeast of Brazil. METHODS: Five hundred and eighty subjects over 59 years of age were interviewed using the Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VFQ). All subjects underwent complete eye examination. The results of the quantitative parameters were expressed by mean ± SD. The results of categorical parameters were expressed by their frequencies. RESULTS: Mean age was of 70 ± 8.1 years. About 86% of the interviewed elderly were illiterate or had incomplete education. The mean complaints were low visual acuity (71.1%) and itching/burning (69.0%). The visual acuity was not normal in 37.4% of the elderly. About 75.0% of the subjects reported to have regular or bad health, and 77.0% reported to have regular or bad vision. The reported quality of life decreased according to the worsening of the visual acuity. CONCLUSION: Visual impairment had a negative impact on the quality of life of the elderly population from the western countryside of Pernambuco State.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar as repercussões da esquistossomose mansônica na forma hepatoesplênica na retina de camundongos. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo com dois grupos de camundongos, sendo um infectado com 40 cercárias do Schistosoma mansoni. Decorridos 120 dias da infecção, os olhos foram submetidos à análise microscópica da retina com descrição dos achados histológicos e realizada análise histomorfométrica com mensuração da espessura de segmento retiniano e do número de células da camada ganglionar. RESULTADOS: Em um caso foi encontrado um granuloma retiniano. Já a análise dos demais cortes histológicos demonstrou uma arquitetura normal da retina. A média da espessura dos segmentos retinianos entre os grupos de camundongos, controle e infectado, foi similar (41,81±6,09µm versus 38,48±8,58µm - p=0,279) assim como a média do número de células da camada ganglionar (20,93±4,88 versus 20,64±4,10 - p=0,864). : A estrutura da retina encontrava-se íntegra e a análise histomorfométrica não revelava diferença significante entre os dois grupos. CONCLUSÃO: A ausência de alterações, neste estudo, não afasta a possibilidade de que desequilíbrios hemodinâmicos e no mecanismo de autoregulação, em portadores da forma hepatoesplênica da esquistossomose, possam acarretar dano retiniano. Demanda, entretanto, que outras metodologias com indução da infecção com uma maior carga parasitária sejam realizadas.

PURPOSE: To evaluate retinal manifestations of Schistosomiasis mansoni in its hepatosplenic form in mice. METHODS: It was performed a study with two groups of mice; one of them was infected with 40 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni. After 120 days of the infection, the eyes underwent a retinal microscopy study. The histology findings were reported. Histomorphometric analysis was also performed, including: thickness measurement of the retinal layer and the number of the ganglion layer cells. RESULTS: In one case a retinal granuloma was found. The analysis of the other histological sections demonstrated normal architecture of the retina. The mean thickness of the retinal layer between the two groups were similar (41.81±6.09µm versus 38.48±8.58µm - p=0.279); as well as the mean number of the ganglion layer cells (20.93±4.88 versus 20.64±4.10 - p=0.864). Disorganization of the retinal layers was not identified and the histomorphometric analysis revealed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The absence of findings in this study does not exclude that hemodynamic and autoregulation changes associated with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis could be correlated to retinal manifestations. It is necessary that other methods with a high parasite infection should be performed.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a repercussão da hipertensão porta nos índices de resistência arterial ovariano, uterino e na periferia do corpo lúteo, na fase lútea média do ciclo menstrual. MÉTODOS: em estudo observacional com corte transversal, 28 portadoras de esquistossomose mansônica na forma hepatoesplênica submetidas à esplenectomia e ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda (EHEO), um grupo similar de 28 pacientes não operadas (EHENO) e 29 voluntárias sadias (VS) foram submetidas à doplerfluxometria na fase lútea média do ciclo menstrual. O índice de resistência (RI) de Pourcelot foi usado como referência RI=[(S-D)/S], em que S significa o pico de velocidade sistólica, e D, o fim da diástole. Escolhia-se o melhor traçado no ramo ascendente da artéria uterina, na artéria ovariana, quando acessível, ou na artéria intraovárica. Quando da existência de corpo lúteo, o RI era medido na periferia do mesmo. Os dados obtidos foram analisados pelos testes de Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS: não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos no que diz respeito às médias dos índices de resistência das artérias ovarianas (Kruskal-Wallis-p=0,50). Foi observada a tendência de que a média dos índices de resistência da artéria uterina direita fosse maior no grupo de EHENO (Kruskal-Wallis-p<0,07); todavia, foi similar no que diz respeito à artéria uterina esquerda (Kruskal-Wallis-p=0,14). Índices de resistência arterial significativamente mais baixos foram observados na periferia do corpo lúteo, quando comparados com os índices das artérias ovarianas contra laterais em todos os grupos (Mann-Whitney-p<0,0001). CONCLUSÕES: não se demonstrou diferença entre os grupos no que diz respeito aos índices de resistência das artérias ovarianas e uterinas. A hipertensão porta em portadoras de doença esquistossomótica na forma hepatoesplênica não altera o fenômeno natural de diminuição do índice de resistência arterial no ovário no qual ocorre a ovulação.

PURPOSE: to evaluate the repercussion of portal hypertension in the indexes of the ovarian, uterine and luteus body periphery arterial resistance, at the medium luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. METHODS: in an observational study with transversal cohort, 28 patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni, submitted to splenectomy and ligation of the left gastric vein (HESO), a similar group of 28 patients who had not had the surgery (HESNO) and 29 healthy volunteers (HV) were submitted to Doppler fluxmetry in the medium luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Pourcelot's resistance index has been used as RI=[(S-D)/S], in which S means the highest systolic speed, and D, the end of diastole. The best record in the ascendant branch of the uterine artery, in the ovarian artery, when accessible, or in the intraovarian artery, was chosen. When the luteus body was present, the RI was measured in its periphery. The data obtained were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: there was no significant difference among the groups, concerning the mean RI of the ovarian arteries (Kruskal-Wallis, p=0.50). There was a tendency for higher right uterine artery RI in the HESNO group (Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.07), but it was similar in the left uterine artery (Kruskal-Wallis, p=0.14). Arterial RIs significantly lower have been observed in the luteus body periphery, when compared to the contralateral ovarian arteries in all the groups (Mann-Whitney, p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: there was no difference among the groups, regarding the ovarian and uterine RIs. The portal hypertension in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis does not affect the natural phenomenon of arterial RI decrease in the ovary where ovulation occurs.

Investigou-se, através da análise digital de imagens, as repercussões do tratamento cirúrgico para controle da hipertensão porta e seus efeitos na vasculatura gástrica de pacientes jovens portadores de esquistossomose mansônica. Foram incluídos no estudo pacientes no pré-operatório (n=5) e grupos de pacientes submetidos à intervenção cirúrgica, em diferentes períodos (0-2 anos, n=04; 2-6 anos, n=13; acima de 6 anos, n=10). Foram obtidas biópsias endoscópicas da mucosa do antro e corpo gástrico, submetidas à rotina histológica e montadas em blocos de parafina. Confeccionaram-se lâminas histológicas que foram usadas para a análise histomorfométrica dos seguintes parâmetros: número médio de vasos por campo, diâmetro médio e espessura da parede dos vasos. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram uma diminuição significativa da densidade e do diâmetro dos vasos a partir dos dois anos de pós-operatório até o período superior a 6 anos. Os dados dão suporte ao conceito de que a técnica cirúrgica ministrada ameniza, em longo prazo, as alterações histopatológicas específicas, como a hemorragia e a ectasia.

The repercussions from surgical treatment for controlling portal hypertension and its effects on the gastric vasculature of young patients with mansonic schistosomiasis were investigated by digital image analysis. The study included five patients at the preoperative stage and 27 patients who had undergone surgical intervention at different times in the past: 0-2 years ago, n=4; 2-6 years ago, n=13, and more than 6 years ago, n=10. Endoscopic biopsies were taken from the mucosa of the gastric antrum and body endoscopic mucosa and the samples underwent routine histological tests after embedding in paraffin blocks. Histological thin sections were used for histomorphometric analysis of the following parameters: mean number of vessels per field, and mean diameter and thickness of the vessel walls. The results showed that, between the patients whose operation was not more than two years ago and those whose operation was more than six years ago, there was a significant decrease in the density and diameter of the vessels. These findings give support to the concept that the surgical treatment administered decreases specific histological alterations like hemorrhage and ectasia, over the long term.

Investigamos em portadores de esquistossomose hepatoesplênica após esplenectomia com ou sem auto-implante esplênico: índice de aderência, produção de superóxido (SP) e de TNF-alfa em monócitos, tratados ou não com tuftsina. Avaliamos três grupos: voluntários sadios CG (grupo controle) (n=12); esplenectomizados com auto-implante AG (n=18) e esplenectomizados sem auto-implante WAG (n=9). Índice de aderência e TNF-alfa não diferiram entre os grupos. SP foi semelhante em CG e AG na 1ª hora após estimulação celular. SP foi maior em todos intervalos de tempo nos grupos CG e AG, comparados ao WAG. O tratamento com tuftsina recuperou o padrão de normalidade de SP em AG, com aumento da 1ª para a 2ª hora nos níveis do CG. O tratamento com tuftsina não alterou SP em WAG, permanecendo reduzida em todos intervalos. O auto-implante esplênico parece recuperar e manter os parâmetros imunológicos avaliados, que têm participação importante na resposta do hospedeiro às infecções.

Adherence index, superoxide and TNF-alpha production in monocytes, with or without tuftsin treatment, were investigated in hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni bearers with splenectomy with or without autologous implantation of spleen tissue. Three groups were evaluated: Healthy volunteers control group (CG) (n=12); Splenectomy with seft auto-transplant AG (n=18) and Splenectomy without auto-transplant WAG (n=9). Adherence index and TNF-alpha did not differ among the groups. Superoxide production was similar in CG and AG, in the 1st hour after cell stimulation. SP was larger in each hour time in CG and AG groups as compared WAS group. TT recovered normal pattern of SP in AG comparable with levels found in CG, with increase from the 1st to 2nd hour. However, TT did not alter SP in WAG, which remained reduced in all time points. Autologous implantation of spleen tissue seems to contribute for recovery and maintenance of the evaluated immunological reactions, which might be important in response to infections.

OBJETIVO: Investigar os níveis de liberação de TNF-alfa?em cultura de monócitos em portadores humanos da forma hepatoesplênica de esquistossomose mansônica. MÉTODO: Foram incluídos aleatoriamente, no estudo, 39 voluntários de idades variando entre 15 e 31 anos, 19 homens e 20 mulheres, divididos em três grupos. Grupo 1 (GC) 12 indivíduos sadios, sem esquistossomose. Grupo 2 (AI) 18 indivíduos portadores de esquistossomose mansônica na forma hepatoesplênica, que tinham se submetido a esplenectomia, ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda e auto-implante de tecido esplênico no omento maior, quando tinham idades entre 7 e 16 anos. Esses pacientes receberam oxaminiquine na dose de 20mg/kg 30 dias antes do procedimento cirúrgico. O seguimento médio atual é de cerca de 8 anos. Grupo 3 - pacientes esplenectomizados sem auto-implante esplênico (ESAI) constituído de nove adultos jovens que tinham se submetido à esplenectomia sem auto-implante esplênico e desconexão ázigo-porta. Os pacientes esquistossomóticos dos grupos 2 e 3 tiveram confirmação dessa doença pela presença de fibrose de Symmers nas biópsias hepáticas realizadas durante o ato cirúrgico. Foram colhidos 6 ml de sangue periférico de cada um dos voluntários incluídos no presente estudo, cujos monócitos foram separados por centrifugação e cultivados no meio de cultura CultilabÒ). Amostras de 100ml do sobrenadante da cultura de monócitos (10(6) células/ml), de cada indivíduo dos três grupos, eram colhidos para determinação das concentrações de TNF-alfa. Essa concentração era mensurada pelo estudo colorimétrico de ELISA para citocinas (QuanticininasTM - Sistema R&D), após 4 horas de estimulação com PMA e incubação, em uma atmosfera úmida com 5% de CO² a 37ºC. RESULTADOS: As concentrações de TNF-alfa? não diferiram significantemente nos três grupos estudados [(GC 135,0 ± 51,6 pg/ml; AI 97,0 ± 25,4 pg/ml e ESAI 107,0 ±. 52,1 pg/ml) - ANOVA, F = 0,210; p = 0,813]. CONCLUSÃO: Os achados contribuem para hipótese de que após esplenectomia com ou sem auto-implante esplênico a função dos monócitos, com relação a produção de TNF-alfa, mantém-se preservada.

BACKGROUND: To investigate TNF-alpha levels released by monocyte culture in bearers of human hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni. METHODS: In this study we randomly included 39 volunteers with ages from 15 to 31 years, 19 men and 20 women, divided into three groups. Control Group 1 (CG) 12 healthy people without schistosomiasis. Auto implanted spleen group 2 (AIS) 18 young adults with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni who underwent splenectomy, ligature of the left gastric vein and auto implantation of spleen tissue into the major omentum, when the age varied between 7 and 16 years. These patients received oxaminiquine in a single dose of 20mg/kg 30 days before the surgical treatment. The mean follow-up was about 8 years. Group 3 - splenectomyzed patients without auto implantation of spleen tissue (SP). Nine young adults were included and underwent total splenectomy without auto implantation of spleen tissue and azigo portal disconnection. The patients with schistosomiasis from groups I and III had the confirmation of their disease by the presence of Symmers fibrosis in the wedge liver biopsies during the surgical procedure. Six 6ml of blood from all volunteers we collected.. The monocytes were separated by centrifugation and cultivated in CultilabÒ medium. Supernatant samples of 100ml from the monocyte culture (10(6)cells/ml), of each person were taken for the measure of TNF-alpha concentrations. This measure was performed by colorimetric ELISA (QuantikineTM - R&D systems), after 4 hours of stimulation with PMA and incubation with 37ºC humid atmosphere of 5% CO2. RESULTS: The TNF-alpha concentrations did not differ significantly among the three groups [(GC 135.0 ± 51.6 pg/ml; AIS 97.0 ± 25.4 pg/ml and SP 107.0 ±. 52.1 pg/ml) - ANOVA F = 0.210; p = 0.813]. CONCLUSIONS: These findings give support to the hypothesis that after splenectomy with or without auto implantation of spleen tissue the monocyte function, as far as the production of TNF-alpha is concerned, it is still preserved.

A cirurgia nas crianças portadoras de esquistossomose mansônica inclui esplenectomia, ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda e o auto-implante de tecido esplênico no omento maior. A eficácia desse procedimento pode ser responsável pelo desaparecimento da sepse fulminante pós-esplenectomia (SFPE) neste tipo de paciente. Esta condição é atribuída à diminuição de IgM, de linfócitos circulantes, de properdina e ausência de tuftsina, o que conduz a deficiência da atividade das células macrófágicas, que são responsáveis pela aderência à bactéria, fagocitose e destruição das mesmas. OBJETIVO: Analisar os aspectos funcionais dos monócitos destes pacientes, operados quando crianças, no Serviço de Cirurgia Geral da Criança do Hospital das Clínicas da UFPE, entre 1991 a 2000. MÉTODOS: Foram analisados os índices de aderência in vitro dos monócitos e a geração do ânion superóxido (O2-), em três grupos. O 1º, auto-implante (AI), constituído por 18 portadores de esquistossomose mansônica na forma hepatoesplênica, submetidos a esplenectomia, ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda e auto-implante de tecido esplênico no omento maior; o 2º, (ESP), formado por nove pacientes similares, submetidos a esplenectomia e desconexão ázigo-portal, e o 3º,(CT), constituído por 12 adolescentes sadios, oriundos da mesma condição sócio-econômica-geográfica. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferença no índice de aderência entre os três grupos. Os monócitos dos pacientes do grupo AI tiveram a geração de O2- semelhante à dos indivíduos do grupo CT, e significantemente maior do que os pacientes do grupo ESP. CONCLUSÕES: Os monócitos dos portadores de esquistossomose hepatoesplênica submetidos a esplenectomia, ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda e auto-implante de tecido esplênico no omento maior se mostram funcionalmente similares aos de indivíduos normais da mesma condição sócio-econômica-geográfica.

Surgical treatment in children suffering from schistosomissis mansoni includes splenectomy; ligature of left gastric vein and auto-implantation of spleen morsels into the greater omentum. The efficacy of this procedure may be responsible for the disappearance of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI), in this kind of patients. This condition may be assigned to the lowering of IgM, circulating lymphocytes, properdin and to the absence of tutfsin, which may lead to the deficiency of mono-macrophage activity cells, responsible for bacteria adherence, phagocytosis and its destruction. PURPOSE: To analyze the functional features of the monocytes from young patients, who underwent splenectomy, ligature of left gastric vein and auto-implantation of morsels of spleen tissue on the major omentum. These patients were cared for at - University Hospital - "Serviço de Cirurgia Geral da Criança, Hospital das Clínicas, UFPE", from 1991 to 2000. METHODS: It was analyzed the rates of monocytes in vitro adherence to the solid surface and the generation of O2- radical by the monocytes, stimulated with acetate miristate of phorbol (PMA) and PMA + tuftsin, in 3 groups. The 1st group (AI), constituted by 18 patients with schistosomiasis mansoni in the hepatosplenic form and treated with splenectomy, ligature of left gastric vein and auto-implantation of fragments of spleen tissue on the major omentum; the 2nd group (ESP), formed by 09 patients with schistosomiasis mansoni in the hepatosplenic form who underwent azigo-portal disconnection with splenectomy and the 3rd one (CT) constituted by 12 voluntary teenagers from the same geographic area and with the same socio-economical conditions. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the monocyte adherence rate among the 3 groups. With regard to the generation of O2- release, the monocytes of patients from AI group had a super oxide generation similar to that of individuals from CT group, and higher than the patients from ESP group. The monocyte treatment with tuftsin did not change the kinetic of the superoxide generation on the 3 groups. CONCLUSIONS: The monocytes of the surgical hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni bearers who underwent splenectomy, ligature of the left gastric vein and auto-implantation of spleen tissue into the major omentum showed functional similar features as comparared to normal people from the same social-economical-geographical conditions.
