Abstract This work presents the first results obtained from developing an experimental program that aims to generate a local frame of reference for the fatty acid profiles of the main resources available in the lower basin of the Colorado river (Buenos Aires district). In this case, the purpose was to identify the fatty acid composition of fish resources and evaluate the main transformations they underwent during cooking. Replicas of archaeological vessels were made, marine fish of different species (sea catfish, whitemouth croaker, narrownose smooth-hound, conger eel, and whiting) were boiled, and the fatty acids of the raw and cooked meat, the cooking liquid, and those of the contents on the internal walls of the vessels were measured. The results obtained showed that fatty acids could be detected in all samples. However, if those identified in the raw meat of each species are compared with those detected after boiling, it is observed that the cooking event generated the loss and/or degradation of some fatty acids, mainly unsaturated ones. Fatty acids (e.g., stearic, palmitic, and oleic acid) present in most food resources (e.g., herbivores and vegetables) were preserved in the vessels. However, fatty acids detected in the vessels such as the polyunsaturated belonging to the C20 group of sea catfish and whitemouth croaker, the eicosenoic acid of sea catfish, and the monounsaturated of the C22 group identified for the conger eel could be considered diagnostic fatty acids of marine fish.

ABSTRACT Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a public health problem and is a relevant cause of death in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the 20-year survival and predictors of worse prognosis in patients with VL admitted to a reference hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases between 1995 and 2016 in northern Minas Gerais, an area of high endemicity for VL. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a hospital in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. All patients with VL were evaluated over a 20-year period. The medical records were thoroughly analyzed. Cox regression analysis was performed to estimate factors associated with the probability of survival. Results: The cohort included 972 individuals, mostly male children <10 years old, from urban areas who presented at admission with the classic triad of fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and skin pallor. The mean hemoglobin level was 7.53 mg/dl. The mean interval between symptom onset and hospital admission was 40 days. The instituted therapies ranged from pentavalent antimonates to amphotericin, or both. The probability of survival was reduced to 78% one year after symptom onset. Hemoglobin levels and age were strongly associated with the probability of survival. Conclusions: Regardless of the mechanism underlying the reduction in hemoglobin and the non-modifiable factors of age, early initiation of drug treatment is the most appropriate strategy for increasing survival in patients with VL, which challenges health systems to reduce the interval between the onset of symptoms and hospital admission. ABSTRACT Objective To estimate vaccination coverage and analyze sociodemographic factors associated with non-vaccination in children born in 2017 and 2018 in the state capitals of Northeast Brazil. Methods A household survey using cluster sampling was conducted from 2020-2022 to estimate vaccination coverage and hesitancy. Factors associated with non-vaccination were analyzed using logistic regression to calculate Odds Ratios (OR) and their Confidence Intervals (95%CI). Results Natal was the capital with the lowest vaccination coverage, below 75.0% for most immunizers. Teresina had rates equal to or greater than 90.0% for all vaccines. Among those interviewed, 99.1% (95%CI 98.9;99.3) believe that vaccines are important for health; 95.4% (95%CI 95.0;95.8) trust immunobiologicals and 79.6% (95%CI% 78.8;80.3) are not afraid of reactions. Belonging to the highest socioeconomic stratum (adjusted OR: 1.34 – 95%CI 1.20;1.50) was as a factor associated with non-vaccination. Conclusion Low coverage highlights the need for a better understanding of regional specificities and social inequalities.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of hydroxyapatite (HA), Alginate (Alg), and Gelatine (Gel) composite in a critical-size defect model in rats. Twenty-four male rats were divided into three groups: a negative control with no treatment (Control group), a positive control treated with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM group), and the experimental group treated with the new HA-Alg-Gel composite (HA-Alg-Gel group). A critical size defect (8.5mm) was made in the rat's calvaria, and the bone formation was evaluated by in vivo microcomputed tomography analysis (µCT) after 1, 15, 45, and 90 days. After 90 days, the animals were euthanized and histological and histomorphometric analyses were performed. A higher proportion of mineralized tissue/biomaterial was observed in the DBBM group when compared to the HA-Alg-Gel and Control groups in the µCT analysis during all analysis periods. However, no differences were observed in the mineralized tissue/biomaterial proportion observed on day 1 (immediate postoperative) in comparison to later periods of analysis in all groups. In the histomorphometric analysis, the HA-Alg-Gel and Control groups showed higher bone formation than the DBBM group. Moreover, in histological analysis, five samples of the HA-Alg-Gal group exhibited formed bone spicules adjacent to the graft granules against only two of eight samples in the DBBM group. Both graft materials ensured the maintenance of defect bone thickness, while a tissue thickness reduction was observed in the control group. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the osteoconductive potential of HA-Alg-Gel bone graft by supporting new bone formation around its particles. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Some maternal characteristics are related to alcohol intake during pregnancy, which irreversibly compromises the maternal-fetal binomial integrity. OBJECTIVES: To identify the frequency, impact, and factors associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was performed at the Hospital Materno Infantil Presidente Vargas (HMIPV) in Porto Alegre/RS between March and December 2016. METHODS: A structured questionnaire was administered along with a medical records review. They refer to the maternal sociodemographic and gestational status, alcohol consumption patterns, and characteristics of the fetus/newborn. In the statistical analysis, P values < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: The frequency of alcohol intake was 37.3%; this was characterized by the consumption of fermented beverages (89.3%), especially during the first trimester (79.6%). Risky consumption (high and/or early) occurred for 30.2% of participants. Risk factors associated with maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy were tobacco use (P < 0.001) and abortion attempt (P = 0.023). Living with a partner (P = 0.002) and planning pregnancy (P = 0.009) were protective factors. Risky consumption was related to all of the aforementioned variables as well as threatened abortion (P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol intake during pregnancy is common and affects nearly one-third of pregnant women. Knowledge of the population at risk and protective factors is essential for the development of campaigns that seek to reduce consumption and, therefore, its consequences for the mother and fetus. Abstract Background Population aging and the consequences of social distancing after the COVID-19 pandemic make it relevant to investigate the feasibility of remote interventions and their potential effects on averting functional decline. Objective (1) To investigate the feasibility, safety, and adherence of a remote protocol involving physical and cognitive exercises for older women with normal cognition; (2) to examine its effects on cognitive and well-being variables. Methods Twenty-nine women (age ≥ 60 years old) were randomized into experimental group (EG; n= 15) and control group (CG; n= 14). The EG performed a 40-minute session of cognitive and physical exercises, and CG performed a 20-minute stretching session. Both groups performed 20 sessions via videoconference and 20 on YouTube twice a week. The Mini-Mental State Examination, Verbal Fluency Test, Digit Span (direct an inverse order), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and Well-being Index (WHO-5) were applied in pre- and post-interventions by phone. Results Overall adherence was 82.25% in EG and 74.29% in CG. The occurrence of adverse events (mild muscle pain) was 33.3% in EG and 21.4% in CG. The EG improved verbal fluency and attention (p ≤ 0.05); both groups had improved depressive symptoms. Conclusion The present study met the pre-established criteria for feasibility, safety, and adherence to the remote exercise protocol among older women. The results suggest that a combined protocol has more significant potential to improve cognitive function. Both interventions were beneficial in improving the subjective perception of well-being. ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze, through literary research, the relation between oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV), as well as associated epidemiological data and prognosis. Methods: This is a narrative review of literature, with investigation on PubMed, LiLACS, Scielo and BVS bases, as well as free search, from June/2021 to February/2022. The DeCS/MeSH descriptors used in Portuguese and English were: “HPV”, “Papillomavirus humano”, “Human Papillomavirus”, “Carcinoma de Células Escamosas Orofaríngeo”, “Oropharyngeal squamous cell Carcinoma” and “Carcinoma Escamocelular”. After all the refinement steps through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 26 studies were selected. Results: Oropharyngeal cancer is related to HPV-positive patients, and its incidence is higher in men. It presents a growing increase in young adults. However, the prognosis and survival rates are favorable. Conclusion: There is a growing relation between oropharynx SCC and HPV in young and adult males, which emphasizes the importance and need for efforts to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of new cases. Further studies are needed to determine the epidemiological impact and this relation in the long term. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. . Abstract Objective The present study aims to analyze histomorphometrically the repair of a non-critical bone defect after implantation of hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres substituted by magnesium (Mg). Methods Thirty rats were distributed into 3 experimental groups, evaluated at 15 and 45 days postoperatively: HAG (bone defect filled with HA microspheres); HAMgG (bone defect filled with HA microspheres replaced with 1 mol% Mg), and CG (bone defect without implantation of biomaterials). Results After 15 days, the biomaterials filled the entire defect extent, forming a new osteoid matrix between the microspheres. In the CG, this neoformation was restricted to the edges with the deposition of loose connective tissue with reduced thickness. At 45 days, new bone formation filled almost the entire extension of the bone defect in the 3 groups, with statistically significant osteoid deposition in the CG despite the reduced thickness compared with the HAG and HAMgG. The groups with biomaterial implantation displayed a more abundant osteoid matrix than at 15 days. Conclusion The biomaterials studied showed biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and bioactivity. The Mg concentration in the substituted HA did not stimulate more significant bone formation than HA without this ion. noncritical non critical (HA Mg. . 201 brasileiro Realizouse Realizou se conglomerados 202 2022 usandose usando OR IC95%. ABSTRACT Introduction: Human aortic tissues in vitro are tools to clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms of the cardiovascular system, cell culture, and transplants. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and compare the preservation of human aneurysmatic aortic tissues in three different solutions. Methods: Six human abdominal aortic aneurysms were obtained from patients after surgical ablation. The aorta samples were incubated in different solutions - 0.9% normal physiological saline solution, Ringer’s lactate solution, and histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution (Custodiol®). Segments were collected at 0, 6, 24, and 48 hours. Creatine kinase and nitrate/nitrite were quantified for each incubation time. The tissue’s alpha-smooth muscle actin was analyzed by immunofluorescence. Results: There was a significant increase in creatine kinase formation in the normal saline group at 0 and 48 hours and in the Ringer’s lactate group at 0 and 48 hours (P=0.018 and P=0.028). The lower levels of creatine kinase and nitrate/nitrite and the aortic tissues’ morphological integrity show that histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate has better tissue protection. These data suggest that histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate induces a protective effect on smooth muscle cells, with less tissue depletion in the aortic aneurysm. Conclusion: This study compared three preservation solutions with the potential for human abdominal aortic aneurysm tissue preservation. The histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution reduced tissue injury and improved tissue preservation in human abdominal aortic aneurysm tissue samples. 20172018, 20172018 2017 2018, 2018 2017-2018 brasileiro 2 meses 202 2022 Estimaramse Estimaram se odds ratio OR 95 IC95%. The use of conducting polymers as coating layers for the protection of surfaces against corrosion represents an important topic for investigation, as reported in the literature. In this work, polypyrrole/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4_NPs/PPy) hybrid nanocomposites (HN) were incorporated as anticorrosive additives in an epoxy paint to protect SAE 1010 carbon steel from corrosion. The HN particles were obtained by chemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution in the presence of Fe3O4_NPs and were characterized by infrared absorption spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used in the analysis of the electrochemical response of the coated surface with and without HN. DLS data showed that the Fe3O4_NPs and Fe3O4_NPs/PPy obtained in solution present average diameters of (19.7 ± 9.6) nm and (63.5 ± 27.7) nm, respectively. TEM images showed Fe3O4_NPs with smaller sizes (10 nm - 30 nm), and that the HN had diameters smaller than 100 nm, consisting of Fe3O4 cores coated with polypyrrole. EIS measurements have shown that the addition of HN to the epoxy paint could improve the efficiency of the anticorrosive coating when compared to the original epoxy paint prepared without any corrosion inhibitor. investigation literature work polypyrroleFe3O4 polypyrroleFeO polypyrrole Fe O polypyrrole/Fe3O Fe3O4NPsPPy FeONPsPPy NPs PPy (Fe3O4_NPs/PPy (HN 101 Fe3O4NPs FeONPs spectrophotometry DLS, , (DLS) Xray X ray XRD, XRD (XRD) TEM. .
