RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da utilização da radiação infravermelha na secagem convectiva de grãos de Moringa oleifera sobre a temperatura no secador e no grão, consumo de energia e qualidade dos grãos. Um experimento no esquema fatorial foi conduzido em 2013 para determinar os valores ótimos da temperatura do ar (30 a 58 ºC) e do tempo de radiação infravermelha (2,0 a 4,8 min) sobre as respostas: teor de água, tempo e taxa de secagem, temperatura no secador e no grão, consumo de energia, e qualidade dos grãos usados como coagulante no tratamento de água. Os resultados obtidos foram: teor de água (4,40 a 4,76% b.u.), tempo de secagem (0,50 a 2,00 h), taxa de secagem (0,70 x 10-3 a 2,05 x 10-3 kgágua kg-1 matéria seca min-1), temperatura dentro do secador (42,24 a 61,82 ºC), temperatura do grão (56,32 a 76,19 ºC), consumo de energia do ventilador (0,05 a 0,20 kWh), resistências elétricas (1,41 a 4,49 kWh), resistências do aquecedor (0,48 a 1,56 kWh), turbidez da água (1,36 a 5,76 NTU), teor de proteína dos grãos (34,93 a 37,93%), e índice de peróxido dos grãos (0,009 a 0,052 meq kg-1). Ambos os fatores avaliados aumentaram a temperatura no secador e nos grãos. O maior consumo de energia foi devido às resistências elétricas. Por outro lado, a radiação infravermelha diminuiu esse consumo. A secagem realizada com temperatura do ar de 44 ºC e tempo de radiação infravermelha de 3,4 min proporcionou maior teor de proteína nos grãos e maior remoção da turbidez no tratamento de água.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of using infrared radiation in the hot-air drying of Moringa oleifera grains on the inner dryer and grain temperatures, energy consumption, and grain quality. An experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme in 2013 to identify the optimum values of the air temperature (30 to 58 ºC) and infrared radiation application time (2.0 to 4.8 min) on moisture content, drying time, drying rate, inner dryer air temperature, grain temperature, energy consumption and quality of grains used as a natural coagulant for water treatment. The results obtained were moisture content from 4.40 to 4.76% wet basis; drying time from 0.50 to 2.00 h; drying rates from 0.70 × 10-3 to 2.05 × 10-3 kgwater kg-1 dry matter min-1; inner dryer air temperatures from 42.24 to 61.82 ºC; grain temperatures from 56.32 to 76.19 ºC; energy consumptions of the fan from 0.05 to 0.20 kWh, electrical resistances from 1.41 to 4.49 kWh; resistances of the infrared heaters from 0.48 to 1.56 kWh; water turbidities from 1.36 to 5.76 NTU; grain protein contents from 34.93 to 37.93%; and peroxide value of grains from 0.009 to 0.052 meq kg-1. Both evaluated factors increased the inner dryer air temperature and grain temperature. The electrical resistances contributed the most to the energy consumption. However, the infrared radiation reduced this consumption. The drying performed with air temperature of 44 °C and infrared radiation time of 3.4 min resulted in the highest protein concentration in the Moringa oleifera L. grains and in greater removal of the water turbidity in the water treatment.

Abstract The aim of this study was to characterize the pattern of gastropod shell occupation in the field and selection of shell size and type under laboratory conditions by the hermit crab Pagurus criniticornis (Dana, 1852), inhabiting the infralittoral area of Anchieta Island, São Paulo, Brazil. Hermit crabs were obtained monthly during 1999 by SCUBA diving. For experiments under laboratory conditions, samplings were performed in 2002. The hermit crabs occupied 16 species of gastropods shells. Cerithium atratum (Born, 1778) was the most occupied shell (89.31%), followed by Morula nodulosa (4.73%) (Adams, 1845). No difference was observed in the pattern of occupation between males and females. The equations that best demonstrated the relationship between hermit crabs and their shells were those that involved Shell Wet Weight (SWW) and Shell Internal Volume (SIV). The laboratory experiments were in accordance to the pattern of occupation observed in the field; the mean value of SAI (Shell Adequacy Index) recorded to the population studied was 1.13 with a trend to increase this value in the last size classes. The results obtained corroborate with the hypothesis of the occupation process of shells governed not only by availability of shells, but also by its architecture. In addition, the shell stock in the area is one another important condition related to the exhibited pattern of shell occupation by P. criniticornis, and allows the stable coexistence among the island assemblage. The pattern of occupation observed promotes a high reproductive profile for the population studied, maximizing the populational growth.

RESUMO A modelagem matemática permite o dimensionamento de secadores, otimização das condições de secagem e avaliação do desempenho do processo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever o comportamento da secagem de bagaço de laranja utilizando-se os modelos de Page e a segunda lei de Fick, avaliar a energia de ativação (equação de Arrhenius), o teor de água, a atividade de água e a massa específica aparente do produto ao final do processo. Realizou-se a secagem de bagaço de laranja com temperatura do ar convectivo entre 36 e 64 ºC e tempo de aplicação da radiação infravermelha na faixa de 23 a 277 s de acordo com planejamento experimental central composto rotacional. Análise de variância e teste F foram aplicados aos resultados. Ao final dos ensaios de secagem foram observados o teor de água entre 0,09 a 0,87 bs e a atividade de água entre 0,25 e 0,87. A massa específica aparente não variou nas condições estudadas. O modelo empírico de Page demonstrou melhor representação dos dados experimentais do que o modelo de Fick para esfera. A energia de ativação obtida nos tempos de infravermelho de 60; 150 e 244 s foi, respectivamente, 18,491; 14,975 e 11,421 kJ mol-1.

ABSTRACT Mathematical modeling enables dimensioning of dryers, optimization of drying conditions and the evaluation of process performance. The aim of this research was to describe the behavior of orange bagasse drying using Page's and Fick's second law models, and to assess activation energy (using Arrhenius equation), moisture content, water activity and bulk density of product at the end of the process. The drying experimental assays were performed in 2011 with convective air temperature between 36 and 64 ºC and infrared radiation application time in the range from 23 to 277 s in accordance with the experimental central composite rotatable design. Analysis of variance and F-test were applied to results. At the end of the drying process, moisture content was about 0.09 to 0.87 db and water activity was between 0.25 and 0.87. Bulk density did not vary under studied conditions. Empirical Page's model demonstrated better representation of experimental data than the Fick's model for spheres. Activation energy values were about 18.491; 14.975 and 11.421 kJ mol-1 for infrared application times of 60; 150 e 244 s, respectively.

Os modelos matemáticos aplicados à secagem auxiliam no dimensionamento de secadores, na previsão da taxa de secagem, melhoram as condições de secagem e avaliam a qualidade do processo; assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o ajuste dos modelos de Page, Midilli, Newton e da segunda lei de Fick aos dados experimentais da secagem convectiva com aplicação de radiação infravermelha de grãos de Moringa oleifera L. Avaliaram-se, também, o efeito dos fatores temperatura do ar (30-60 ºC), a velocidade do ar (0,55-1,05 m s-1), o tempo de aplicação da radiação infravermelha (120-300 s) e a intensidade da radiação infravermelha (1500-4500 W) sobre a difusividade efetiva, teor de água, atividade de água e tempo de secagem. Os modelos explicaram mais de 98% do comportamento da secagem destacando-se que o modelo de Midilli apresentou o melhor ajuste aos dados experimentais. A difusividade efetiva foi calculada com equação proposta pela Segunda Lei de Fick, solução para formato esférico e os valores obtidos variaram entre 6,44x10-10 e 9,89x10-10 m2 s-1. Os fatores temperatura do ar e tempo de aplicação da radiação infravermelha foram significativos sobre todas as respostas estudadas considerando-se 90% de confiança.

Mathematical models applied to drying assists in sizing dryers, predicting drying rate, improvement of drying conditions and assessment of process quality. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the fitting of Page, Midilli, Newton and second law of Fick models to the experimental data of convective drying with application of infrared radiation of Moringa oleifera L. grains. The effects of factors - air temperature (30-60 °C), air velocity (0.55 to 1.05 m s-1), infrared radiation application time (120-300 s) and infrared radiation intensity (1500-4500 W) on the effective diffusivity, moisture content, water activity and drying time was also evaluated. The models explained more than 98% of the drying behavior and the Midilli model showed the best fit for the experimental data. The effective diffusivity was calculated using the equation proposed by the solution of second law of Fick, for spherical shape, and the values ranged from 6.44x10-10 to 9.89x10-10 m2 s-1. The factors air temperature and infrared radiation application time were significant for all studied variables, considering 90% of confidence.

O presente estudo caracterizou o padrão de ocupação de conchas de Isocheles sawayai Forest and Saint-Laurent, 1968, na região de Caraguatatuba. A porcentagem dos diferentes tipos de conchas ocupadas e as relações morfométricas entre os ermitões e as conchas ocupadas foram analisadas a partir de material de amostragem sistematizada, mensalmente, de julho/2001 a junho/2003. Foram capturados 373 indivíduos (297 machos, 41 fêmeas não-ovígeras, 25 fêmeas ovígeras e 10 indivíduos intersexo), ocupando 17 espécies de conchas de moluscos gastrópodes. Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767) (49,87%) foi a espécie significativamente mais ocupada (χ2 = 89,30; p < 0,05) seguida, porém sem diferença significativa, por Phalium granulatum (Born, 1778) (11,53%), Polinices hepaticus (Roding, 1798) (8,31%) e Cymatium parthenopeum (von Salis, 1793) (6,97%). Todas as relações morfométricas entre os ermitões e as conchas ocupadas apresentaram valores de coeficientes de correlação elevados (r > 0,68) e significativos (p < 0,05), o que é um importante indício de que, nessa população de I. sawayai, os animais ocupavam conchas adequadas. O elevado número de espécies de conchas ocupadas e a relativa plasticidade indicaram que, para a população estudada, a ocupação é influenciada pela disponibilidade de conchas.

The aim of this study was to characterize the pattern of shell occupation by the hermit crab Isocheles sawayai Forest and Saint-Laurent, 1968, from the Caraguatatuba region. The percentage of shell types that were occupied and the morphometric relationships between hermit crabs and occupied shells were analyzed from systematized collections that were conducted monthly from July 2001 to June 2003. A total of 373 individuals were captured (297 males, 41 non-ovigerous females, 25 ovigerous females and 10 intersexes), occupying 17 species of gastropod shells. Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767) (49.87%) was the significantly most occupied species (χ2 = 89.30; P < 0.05) followed, with no significant difference, by Phalium granulatum (Born, 1778) (11.53%), Polinices hepaticus (Roding, 1798) (8.31%) and Cymatium parthenopeum (von Salis, 1793) (6.97%). All the morphometric relationships between hermit crabs and occupied shells showed high (r > 0.68) and significant (P < 0.05) correlation values, which is an important indication that in this I. sawayai population the animals occupied adequate shells. The high number of occupied shell species and relative plasticity indicated that, for the studied population, occupation is influenced by the shell availability.

A população do ermitão Pagurus criniticornis (Dana, 1872) foi avaliada com base na abundância sazonal, distribuição da freqüência de tamanho, razão sexual, período reprodutivo, fecundidade e relação com a concha ocupada. Os espécimes foram coletados mensalmente por meio de mergulho autônomo no infralitoral da Ilha Anchieta, Ubatuba. Um total de 1.017 indivíduos foi analisado. O tamanho dos animais (comprimento mínimo e máximo do escudo cefalotorácico, respectivamente) foi de 0,7 e 2,9 mm para os machos, 0,6 e 2,8 mm para as fêmeas não ovígeras e 1,0 e 2,5 mm para as fêmeas ovígeras. A razão sexual foi de 1:1,29. Foi observado dimorfismo sexual em função da presença de machos nas maiores classes de tamanho. Fêmeas ovígeras foram capturadas em todos os meses do ano, com a porcentagem variando de 8% (Julho) a 84,3% (Fevereiro) em relação ao total de fêmeas coletadas. A fecundidade média foi de 168 ± 125 ovos e tendeu a ser maior com o aumento do tamanho do ermitão. Fêmeas ovígeras de P. criniticornis foram encontradas ocupando quatro espécies de conchas de gastrópodes [Cerithium atratum (Born, 1778), Morula nodulosa (Adams, 1845), Anachis lyrata (Sowerby, 1832) e Modulus modulus (Linnaeus, 1758)] no entanto, a fecundidade não foi significativamente diferente em relação aos diferentes tipos de conchas. A população de P. criniticornis apresentou um perfil reprodutivo contínuo e intenso, possivelmente relacionado a estratégias de desenvolvimento que compensam a competição interespecífica existente na área de estudo.

The population of the hermit crab Pagurus criniticornis (Dana, 1852) was studied based on seasonal abundance, size frequency distribution, sex ratio, reproductive period, fecundity and shell relationship. Specimens were collected monthly by SCUBA diving in the infralittoral area of Anchieta Island, Ubatuba. A total of 1,017 individuals was analyzed. Animal size (minimum and maximum shield length, respectively) was 0.7 and 2.9 mm for males, 0.6 and 2.8 mm for non-ovigerous females, and 1.0 and 2.5 mm for ovigerous females. The sex ratio was 1:1.29. Sexual dimorphism was recorded by the presence of males in the largest size classes. Ovigerous females were captured during all months along the year, with percentages varying from 8% (July) to 84.3% (February) in relation to the total females collected. Mean ± SD fecundity was 168 ± 125 eggs and tended to increase with increasing hermit size. Shells of four gastropod species [Cerithium atratum (Born, 1778), Morula nodulosa (Adams, 1845), Anachis lyrata (Sowerby, 1832) and Modulus modulus (Linnaeus, 1758)] were occupied by ovigerous females of P. criniticornis but fecundity was not significantly different in relation to the different shell types. The profile showed continuous and intense reproduction of P. criniticornis probably related to strategies developed to compensate for interspecific competition in the studied insular area.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar a composição dos caranguejos Majoidea habitantes do infralitoral rochoso/arenoso da Ilha Anchieta (Ubatuba), litoral norte do Estado de São Paulo. Os caranguejos foram coletados mensalmente durante 1999 e 2000, por mergulho autônomo e armadilhas. Foi registrada a ocorrência de oito espécies de caranguejos majóideos (Epialtus brasiliensis, Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax braziliensis, Mithrax hispidus, Mithrax tortugae, Pelia rotunda, Pitho lherminieri e Stenorhynchus seticornis) o que corresponde a 24,2% do total de majóideos registrados para o litoral do Estado de São Paulo. Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax tortugae e Stenorhynchus seticornis constituem populações frequentes na comunidade da área de estudo. A taxoeconose da área foi dominada por M. foreceps (57,62%). A ocorrência de Mithrax braziliensis no presente estudo amplia sua distribuição sul para o Estado de São Paulo.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the composition of Majoidea crabs inhabiting the infralittoral rocky/sandy bottom of Anchieta Island (Ubatuba), from north coast of São Paulo State. Crabs were collected monthly during 1999 and 2000 by using SCUBA and cages. The occurrence of eight species of majoids (Epialtus brasiliensis, Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax braziliensis, Mithrax hispidus, Mithrax tortugae, Pelia rotunda, Pitho lherminieri and Stenorhynchus seticornis) was registered and corresponded to 24.2% of total of majid crabs recorded in the coast of São Paulo State. Mithraculus forceps, Mithrax tortugae and Stenorhynchus seticornis were most abundant in samples and constituted populations that belonged to the brachyuran community of the studied area. The taxocoenosis of the area was dominated by M. forceps (57.62%). The occurrence of Mithrax braziliensis in the present study enlarged its south distribution to the São Paulo State.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar parâmetros do látex e da borracha natural de quatro clones de seringueira [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.] cultivados em larga escala na Fazenda Cambuhy no Município de Matão, Estado de São Paulo. Foram utilizados látex de 20 árvores do estande de cada um dos clones, GT 1, PB 235, IAN 873 e RRIM 600, com 12 anos de idade, no quarto ano de sangria sob o sistema 1/2S d/3 6d/7. 11m/y. ET 5,0%. Pa 12/y. Foram analisados o conteúdo de borracha seca, porcentagem de cinzas, porcentagem de nitrogênio, plasticidade Wallace (P O), índice de retenção de plasticidade e viscosidade Mooney (V R). O conteúdo de borracha seca apresentou tendência de queda com o decréscimo da temperatura ao longo do ano (r = 0,75). Contrário ao conteúdo de borracha seca, as propriedades porcentagem de nitrogênio e porcentagem de cinzas apresentaram tendência de aumento com a redução da temperatura ao longo do período das coletas. A correlação entre P O e V R foi linear e elevada (r = 0,93). Os altos valores de P O e V R indicam que as borrachas dos clones estudados são consideradas como borrachas duras. Os valores do índice de retenção de plasticidade foram baixos, indicando baixa resistência à degradação térmica. Os resultados mostram influência marcante dos fatores climáticos em algumas propriedades dos látices e da borracha natural dos clones estudados, sugerindo condição importante para se entender o comportamento dos mesmos.

The objective of the present paper was to evaluate the parameters of latex and natural rubber from four clones of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.Arg.] planted in large scale in Cambuhy plantations in São Paulo State, Brazil. Latex from 20 trees of each 12-year-old clones viz. GT 1, PB 235, IAN 873 and RRIM 600 following the 1/2S d/3 6d/7. 11m/y. ET 5.0%. Pa 12/y tapping system in the fourth year of yielding. The studied parameters were percentages of dry rubber content (DRC), ashes and nitrogen, Wallace plasticity (P O), plasticity retention index (PRI) and Mooney viscosity (V R). Results indicated a trend of reduction in DRC with decreasing temperatures (r = 0.75). Results of ashes percentages and N percentages indicated a behavior opposite to DRC, increasing with the decreasing temperature along the year. A high correlation value (r = 0.93) was obtained between P O and V R. The high values obtained for P O and V R indicate that the rubber studied should be considered as hard rubbers. The PRI values for these clones were considered low and are associated with a low resistance to thermal degradation. The results obtained indicate a strong influence of climatic conditions on some properties of the lattices and natural rubber for the studied clones. Such parameters suggest an important condition to understand the behavior of these clones.
