ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate development in the following tree species: Acacia mangium Willd, Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschu, Casuarina equisetifolia L. ex J. R. Forst. & G. Forst, Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. Ex DC.) Mattos, and Colubrina glandulosa subsp. reitzii (M.C.Johnst.) Borhidi under two water regimes in the Irrigated Perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, in the state of Ceará. The experiment was conducted over seven years, with the factors represented by water regimes, species and periods in an arrangement of split-split plots in a completely randomised design repeated over time with four replications of two plants each. The response variables were total height, diameter at breast height, volume, absolute growth rate in height and diameter, and current and average annual increase in volume. After seven years, the species Acacia mangium, Casuarina equisetifolia, Handroanthus impetiginosus, Anadenanthera colubrina and Colubrina glandulosa presented the following respective mean volumes: 0.62, 0.47, 0.45, 0.31 and 0.29 m3 irrespective of the water regime. Despite a reduction in the growth rates of the species during each period, they remained positive, and growth did not stop. The mean values for volume confirm that the species showed similar growth for the water regimes under study. An irrigated regime of up to one year is therefore suggested for cultivating these species in the Irrigated Perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. Willd var Griseb. Griseb (Griseb. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterise the lignocellulosic fractions of pruning waste from tree species showing potential for furniture production in Acaraú, Ceará. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomised, split-plot design, with the plots corresponding to two water regimes (irrigated for one year and irrigated for three years) and the sub-plots to eight tree species, with three replications. The chemical attributes were determined after seven years. Except for the insoluble lignin content, there was a significant effect from the different species in terms of the chemical properties of the wood. The results for the lignocellulosic fractions show the possibility of developing technological ways of adding value to these waste products, especially considering their lignin content. The different species also showed potential for use in producing cellulose pulp, with the exception of Handroanthus impetiginosus due to its high ash content. The results of this study offer new perspectives for future research into the use of forestry waste. Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento inicial em diferentes condições de sombreamento das espécies Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita e Copernicia macroglossa. Inicialmente, as sementes foram embebidas em água para uma pré-germinação, em seguida foram semeadas em tubetes (288 ml) preenchidos com substrato (arisco + composto orgânico + vermiculita) na proporção de 2:1:1 e mantidas a pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. Adotou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 5 repetições (4 plantas/repetição) e cinco períodos de avaliação 45, 90, 135, 180 e 225 dias após a semeadura, com fatores dispostos em arranjo de parcelas subdivididas no tempo (4 níveis de sombreamento x 5 épocas de avaliação). A cada época de avaliação, foram mensuradas as seguintes variáveis respostas: número de folhas, altura, diâmetro do coleto, área foliar, massa seca das partes aéreas e das raízes e índice de qualidade de Dickson. As mudas de Copernicia cultivadas em pleno sol e 30% de sombreamento expressam efeitos positivos no crescimento inicial com boa qualidade. Abstract This work was carried out in order to evaluate the initial growth in different conditions of shadings of the species Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita and Copernicia macroglossa. Initially the seed were soaked in water to a pre-germination, afterward were sowed in tubes (288 ml) filled with substrate (sandy loam + organic compost + vermiculite) in proportion 2:1:1 and kept in full sun, 30%, 50% e 70% shading. It was adopted the completely randomized design, with five repetitions (4 plants/repetition) and five periods of evaluation: 45, 90, 135, 180 and 225 days after sowing, with the factors disposed in a spli-splot measured over time (4 shading levels x 5 evaluation times). RESUMO O uso de estratégias de manejo ou alterações no ambiente de cultivo podem reduzir os impactos da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre o desenvolvimento vegetal. Assim, nessa pesquisa foram avaliadas respostas fisiológicas, crescimento inicial e qualidade de plantas de Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan (Angico Branco) sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento e condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação, buscando-se identificar as condições mais favoráveis para o desenvolvimento dessa espécie utilizando-se águas salobras. O experimento foi realizado em blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. As parcelas foram formadas por quatro ambientes com diferentes níveis de sombreamento: 0 (pleno sol), 30, 50 e 70%, e as subparcelas, formadas por cinco níveis crescentes de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação: 0,4, 1,6, 2,8, 4,0 e 5,2 dS.m−1. Foram avaliadas as variáveis: condutividade elétrica do substrato, trocas gasosas foliares, altura de plantas, produção de biomassa e índice de qualidade de Dickson aos 40 dias em viveiro. O uso do sombreamento artificial favoreceu o desenvolvimento das plantas e a taxa de fotossíntese, mesmo quando irrigadas com água de moderada e elevada salinidade. O IQD mostrou que as plantas de A. colubrina apresentaram maior índice de qualidade quando produzidas sob sombreamento intermediário (30% e 50%), com perdas no rendimento inferiores a 20% quando irrigadas com água com condutividade elétrica de até 2,8 dS.m−1.

ABSTRACT The use of management strategies or changes in the cultivation environment can reduce the impacts of irrigation water salinity on plant development. Therefore, in this research, physiological responses, initial growth, and plant quality of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan (Angico Branco) were evaluated under different levels of shading and electrical conductivity of the irrigation water, seeking to identify the most favorable conditions for the development of this species using brackish water. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks with split plots and four replications. The plots were formed by four environments with different shading levels: 0 (full sun), 30, 50, and 70%, and the subplots, formed by five increasing levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water: 0.4, 1.6, 2.8, 4.0, and 5.2 dS.m−1. The following variables were evaluated: substrate electrical conductivity, leaf gas exchange, plant height, biomass production, and Dickson quality index at 40 days in a nursery. The use of artificial shading favored plant development and photosynthesis rate, even when irrigated with moderate and high salinity water. The DQI showed that A. colubrina plants presented higher quality index when produced under intermediate shading (30% and 50%), with yield losses below 20% when irrigated with water with electrical conductivity up to 2.8 dS.m−1.

RESUMO A região Nordeste brasileira apresenta condições climáticas favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da floricultura; contudo, a escassez hídrica e a salinização de parte de suas fontes hídricas atuam como entrave a essa atividade. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se testar os efeitos de níveis crescentes de salinidade da água de irrigação sobre as respostas quantitativas e qualitativas das espécies ornamentais Euphorbia milii e Zamioculcas zamiifolia, sob diferentes condições de luminosidade. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com cinco repetições. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 7 L, passando por um período inicial de aclimatação durante 15 dias com água não salina para que o seu estabelecimento não fosse comprometido; após esse período, as plantas foram submetidas a níveis crescentes de salinidade na água de irrigação (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; e 5,0 dS m-1) sob quatro intensidades luminosas (pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento), durante 60 dias. As variáveis analisadas foram altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, biomassa da parte subterrânea e das partes aéreas, tolerância à salinidade e análise qualitativa. O sombreamento teve maior impacto nas variáveis qualitativas das plantas do que na tolerância à salinidade baseada em variáveis quantitativas. O ambiente com 30% de sombreamento é o mais propício para o cultivo da E. milii quando se utiliza água de baixa a moderada salinidade. O sombreamento reduz os danos diretos da radiação nas folhas de Z. zamiifolia e melhora a qualidade visual dessa espécie sob elevada salinidade.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Northeast region has favorable climatic conditions for the development of floriculture; however, water scarcity and salinization of part of its water sources act as an obstacle to this activity. In this context, the objective was to test the effects of increasing levels of salinity in irrigation water on the quantitative and qualitative responses of ornamental species Euphorbia milii and Zamioculcas zamiifolia, under different light conditions. The study was carried out using an experimental design in randomized blocks, in a split-split-plot scheme, with five replications. The plants were grown in 7 L pots, undergoing an initial period of acclimatization for 15 days with non-saline water so that their establishment would not be compromised; after this period, the plants were subjected to increasing levels of salinity in the irrigation water (0.5; 2.0; 3.5; and 5.0 dS m-1) under four light intensities (full sun, 30%, 50% and 70% shading) for 60 days. The variables analyzed were plant height, stem diameter, belowground and shoot biomass, salinity tolerance and qualitative analysis. Shading had a greater impact on the qualitative variables of the plants than on the salinity tolerance based on quantitative variables. The environment with 30% shading is the most favorable for the cultivation of E. milii when using water with low to moderate salinity. Shading reduces direct radiation damage to Z. zamiifolia leaves and improves the visual quality of this species under high salinity.

RESUMO A redução da disponibilidade hídrica causa efeitos na fisiologia e morfologia das plantas, sendo responsável por alterações no metabolismo, com implicações no desenvolvimento de plantas arbóreas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do estresse hídrico no crescimento foliar e estado nutricional em plantas adultas de gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos.), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) e mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.), cultivadas em condições de sequeiro e irrigadas, no perímetro irrigado do Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de medidas repetidas no tempo, num esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas (6 x 2 x 2), sendo a parcela principal composta por seis espécies, a subparcela por dois regimes hídricos (irrigado e sequeiro) e a subsubparcela pelas épocas de avaliação. Foram determinadas concentrações foliares de N, P e K, além de área foliar específica (AFE), grau de suculência (GS), índice relativo de clorofila (IRC) e eficiência fotossintética no uso de N (A/N) e P (A/P), nas estações seca e chuvosa. Os resultados mostraram que o ipê-amarelo foi a espécie mais sensível quanto à variação das concentrações de N, P e K nas folhas em resposta à disponibilidade de água no solo. Quanto à AFE, ipê-amarelo, ipê-rosa e mogno foram mais sensíveis às condições de déficit hídrico extremo. A restrição hídrica no solo ocasiona a diminuição da suculência foliar no gonçalo-alves e no mogno. O IRC é diretamente afetado pelo déficit hídrico e está relacionado ao maior GS e à menor AFE. Quanto a A/N e A/P, o gonçalo-alves foi a espécie mais eficiente, não sendo afetado pelas condições de disponibilidade hídrica do solo.

ABSTRACT The reduction in water availability effects plant physiology and morphology and accounts for changes in metabolism with implications for the development of tree species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of water stress on morphophysiological leaf characteristics and nutritional status of adult plant of gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos.), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) and mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.) cultivated under rainfed and irrigated conditions, in the irrigation perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. The experimental design was a repeated measures, a scheme of sub-divided plots (6 x 2 x 2), the main plot consists of six species, the sub-plot of two water availability (irrigated and rainfed) and the sub-subplots were the evaluation time. The following evaluations were performed during the dry and rainy seasons: foliar concentrations of N, P, K and Na, specific leaf area (AFE), leaf succulence (GS), and relative index of chlorophyll (IRC). The results showed that ipê-amarelo was the most sensitive species in terms of variation of N, P and K concentrations in leaves in response to soil water availability. Regarding AFE, ipê-amarelo, ipê-rosa and mogno were more sensitive to extreme water deficit conditions. The water restriction in the soil causes the decrease of the leaf succulence in the gonçalo alves and mogno. The chlorophyll is directly affected by drought and is related to the higher GS and the lower AFE. As for A/N and A/P, gonçalo-alves was more efficient species, not affected by soil water availability conditions.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of light availability and salt stress on the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. The experiment was conducted with two light conditions – full sun (L1), and 50% shading (L2) – and five salinity levels in the irrigation water – 1.0 (S1), 2.2 (S2), 3.2 (S3), 4.2 (S4), and 5.1 (S5) dS m-1. The environment with 50% shading was the most suitable to produce hazel sterculia seedlings, even under high salinity (5.1 dS m-1). Increasing salinity negatively affects the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. Therefore, controlling sunlight availability and irrigation water saline conditions increases rooting potential and seedling survival in the field.

RESUMO Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa fazer a caracterização biométrica das sementes, morfologia das plântulas de Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don. e avaliar o crescimento inicial das mudas em dois ambientes distintos com diferentes níveis de luminosidade. Para a biometria de sementes, utilizou-se 100 sementes sem as partes aladas para a mensuração do comprimento, largura e espessura. Para a morfologia das plântulas, semeou-se 100 sementes em tubetes de 300 cm3, registrando-se os eventos do processo germinativo através de fotos digitais e dispondo-as de forma sequenciada de acordo com a idade das plântulas. A análise de crescimento inicial foi realizada em sol pleno e estufa agrícola durante nove épocas num esquema de parcelas subdivididas, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As variáveis respostas foram: número de folhas, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, comprimento da raiz, massa seca da parte aérea e raiz, bem como, o índice de qualidade de Dickson (IQD). O comprimento das sementes variou de 7,09 a 9,26 mm, a largura de 6,74 a 9,39 mm e a espessura de 1,11 a 1,89 mm. A germinação é do tipo fanerocotiledonar hipógea, com o surgimento da raiz primária ao sexto dia após a semeadura. O jacarandá-mimoso apresentou maiores valores de diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da raiz e IQD no transcorrer do tempo em sol pleno. Conclui-se que a caracterização biométrica de sementes e morfológica de plântulas de jacarandá-mimoso possibilita o reconhecimento da espécie em campo. As plantas produzidas em sol pleno apresentam melhor desenvolvimento. Após 36 semanas de desenvolvimento as mudas mantidas em sol pleno podem ser destinadas a recomposição vegetal e recuperação de áreas degradadas.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to characterize the biometry of seeds, the morphology of seedlings and to evaluate the initial growth of blue jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don.) in two environments with distinct luminosity. The biometry of 100 de-winged seeds was measured by their length, width and thickness. One hundred seeds were sown into 300 cm3 tubes and seedlings morphology was registered throughout the germination process using digital photographs disposed sequentially according to seedlings age. The initial growth analysis was performed in two environments, full sun and greenhouse, during nine periods, and arranged in a complete randomized design with subplots. The response variables were: number of leaves, plant height, collar diameter, root length, aerial and roots dry weight, and Dickson’s Quality Index (DQI). Biometry results showed seeds 7.09 - 9.26 mm long, 6.74 -9.39 mm wide, and 1.11 -1.89 mm thick. Germination is of hypogealphanerocotylar type, with first root arising six days after sown. Plants at full sun presented larger collar diameters, greater root dry weight and higher DQI as evaluation periods passed by. In conclusion, the biometry of seeds and the morphology of seedlings of blue jacaranda can be used to recognize this species in the field. Plants at full sun presented better development. Seedlings cultivated at full sun can be destined to recuperate forests and degraded areas just 36 weeks after sowed.

RESUMO No presente trabalho buscou-se avaliar o grau de tolerância à salinidade e os mecanismos fisiológicos de mudas de seis espécies lenhosas nativas da caatinga, sob um gradiente de salinidade do solo, em casa de vegetação. Utilizou-se um delineamento em bloco ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas, com cinco repetições, sendo as parcelas formadas pelas seis espécies e as subparcelas pelos níveis de salinidade do solo (1,2; 2,7; 4,7; 6,7; e 8,4 dS m-1). Os resultados demonstram que as espécies da Caatinga exibem uma elevada capacidade de adaptação em solos de salinidade baixa e moderada. Entretanto, considerando-se os graus de redução na produção de matéria seca total, no maior nível de salinidade, observou-se que apenas a espécie M. urundeuva mostrou-se tolerante à salinidade; H. impetiginosus e E. velutina se comportaram como moderadamente tolerantes. No presente estudo, também não foi possível estabelecer uma relação clara entre as trocas gasosas e o acúmulo de solutos orgânicos nas folhas com os graus de tolerância ao sal. Por outro lado, uma forte relação foi observada entre a razão Na+/K+ e o grau de tolerância das espécies em estudo, com as espécies mais tolerantes apresentando menos variação e valores mais baixos com o aumento da salinidade do solo. Estas espécies, contudo, mostraram uma baixa capacidade de retenção de Na+ nos caules, que pode ser um fator limitante na sua utilização em projetos de revegetação em áreas degradadas por salinização secundária.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance and physiological responses of six woody native species of the Caatinga ecosystem, on a soil salinity gradient in a greenhouse. The experimental design was of randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme; six plant species native of the Caatinga in the plots, and five levels of soil salinity in the sub-plots (1.2, 2.7, 4.7, 6.7 and 8.4 dS m-1), with five replications. The results demonstrate that species of the Caatinga ecosystem display a high capacity for adaptation in soils of low and moderate salinity. However, considering the reduction in total dry matter production at the highest salinity level, it was seen that only the species M. urundeuva was tolerant to salinity, and H. impetiginosus and E. velutina behaved as moderately tolerant. In the present study, it was also not possible to establish a clear relationship between the leaf gas exchange or the accumulation of organic solutes in the leaves with the degrees of salt tolerance. On the other hand, a strong relationship was seen between the Na+/K+ ratio and the degree of tolerance of the species under study, with the more tolerant species displaying less variation and lower values with the increases in soil salinity. These species, however, showed a low capacity for retaining Na+ in the stems, which may be a limiting factor on their use in revegetation projects of those areas degraded by secondary salinization.

RESUMO A propagação de Acnistus arborescens (fruto-do-sabiá) usualmente é feita através de estacas, devido a baixa taxa de germinação de suas sementes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito da temperatura e do estimulante nitrato de potássio (KNO3) na germinação do fruto-do-sabiá. O experimento foi realizado utilizando quatro regimes de temperatura (20, 25, 30 e 20-30 °C), com e sem nitrato de potássio, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições de 50 sementes cada. Foram avaliados a porcentagem, o índice de velocidade e o tempo médio de germinação. Nas temperaturas constantes, o KNO3 favoreceu a germinação, sendo as maiores porcentagens (>68%) obtidas nas temperaturas de 20 °C e 25 °C. A temperatura alternada de 20-30 °C aumentou a porcentagem de germinação, sem a adição de KNO3, portanto além da propagação vegetativa. A produção de mudas a partir de sementes é viável.

ABSTRACT The propagation of Acnistus arborescens (fruto-do-sabiá) is usually made using cuttings, because the germination percentage of this species is low. The objective of this work was to study the effect of temperature and potassium nitrate (KNO3) stimulant on the germination of fruto-do-sabiá. The experiment was conducted under four temperature regimes (20, 25, 30 and 20-30 °C), with and without potassium nitrate, in a completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds each. The percentage, speed index, and average time of germination were evaluated. Under constant temperatures, KNO3 improved germination, with the highest percentages (>68%) obtained at the temperatures of 20 and 25 °C. The alternating temperature of 20-30 °C was effective in overcoming seed dormancy without addition of KNO3; therefore, besides the vegetative propagation, the production of seedlings from seeds is viable.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as trocas gasosas e a eficiência fotoquímica do fotossistema II em plantas adultas de gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium Schott.), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) e mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.) cultivadas em condições de sequeiro e irrigadas, no Perímetro Irrigado do Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de medidas repetidas no tempo, num esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas (6 x 2 x 3), sendo a parcela principal composta por seis espécies, a subparcela por dois regimes hídricos (irrigado e sequeiro) e a subsubparcela pelas épocas de avaliação. As análises das trocas gasosas foram realizadas em 22/11/2012 (estação seca), 07/02/2013 (data que antecedeu o período chuvoso) e 17/05/2013 (estação chuvosa). As espécies mogno, guanandi e ipê-amarelo mostraram-se mais sensíveis ao déficit hídrico, em comparação com as outras espécies, o que foi evidenciado pelas maiores reduções nas trocas gasosas e na eficiência fotoquímica do fotossistema II. O ipê-rosa, o marupá e o gonçalo-alves mostraram-se mais adaptados às condições de baixa disponibilidade hídrica do solo.

Matos.), marupá (Sima roubaamara Aubl.) andmogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.) cultivated in non-irrigated and irrigated conditions, in the Irrigation Perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, Ceará, Brazil. The experimental design was a repeated measures, a scheme of split-plots (6 x 2 x 3), with the plot composed by six plant species, the subplot by two water regimes (irrigated and non-irrigated) and the sub-subplots by evaluation dates. The measurements of leaf gas exchange were made in 11/22/2012 (dry season), 02/ 07/2013 (date that preceded the rainy season) and 05/17/2013 (rainy season). The species mogno, guanandi and ipê-amarelo were more sensitive to drought compared to other species, evidenced by greater reductions in leaf gas exchange and photochemical efficiency ofphotosystem II. The ipê-rosa, marupá and gonçalo-alves were more adapted to conditions of low soil water availability.

O conhecimento do comportamento germinativo de uma espécie vegetal é de significativa importância para a adoção de técnicas que visam sua propagação. O trabalho avaliou o processo germinativo de sementes de Dalbergia cearensis Ducke na presença e ausência de luz, submetidas a temperaturas constantes de 20, 25, 30, 35 e 40 ºC e alternada de 20-45 ºC, sob fotoperíodo de 12 horas e escuro contínuo. As variáveis avaliadas foram: a porcentagem, a velocidade e o tempo médio de germinação. As sementes germinaram na presença e na ausência de luz, com as maiores porcentagens de germinação alcançadas nas temperaturas de 25, 30 e 35ºC. Desse modo, para desencadear o processo germinativo dessa espécie, não há necessidade da incidência ou ausência de luz, podendo-se caracterizar suas sementes como fotoblásticas neutras. A germinação foi nula no regime de temperatura alternada. A faixa ótima de temperatura entre 25 a 35ºC aumenta a velocidade e reduz o tempo médio de germinação de sementes de Dalbergia cearensis, tanto para o escuro quanto para luz.

The knowledge about the germination behavior of a plant species is major important to the adoption of the techniques that aim its spreading. The work analyzed the seed germination process of Dalbergia cearensis Ducke in the presence and absence of light, that was subjected to constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 ºC and alternating temperatures of 20 - 45 ºC, all under a photoperiod of 12 hours and continuous darkness. The variables evaluated were: the percentage, the speed and the medium time of the germination. The seeds germinated in the presence and absence of light and the higher percentages of germination were 25, 30 and 35 ºC. Thus, to trigger the germination process of this species, there is no need of exposure or absence of light. So they can be characterized as neutral photoblastic seeds. No germination was observed at alternating temperatures of 20 ºC to 45 ºC. The optimum temperature range between 25 to 35 ºC increases speed and reduces the average time of germination of Dalbergia cearensis for both the dark and for light.

Objetivou-se nessa pesquisa avaliar a influência da maturação dos frutos na qualidade fisiológica das sementes e crescimento inicial de Copernicia hospita. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em um fatorial 2 x 3 x 2 com quatro repetições, os fatores foram constituídos por duas colorações de frutos (verde-amarelados e escuros), três tipos de propágulos (fruto íntegro, fruto despolpado e semente), e embebição (sem e com) por cinco dias, dispostos em um delineamento inteiramente casualisado. As variáveis de observação foram: porcentagem, velocidade e tempo médio de emergência, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular. Frutos de coloração escura, independentemente do tipo de propágulo, e frutos verdes amarelados despolpados, com ou sem embebição, mostram-se superiores com uma maior porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade e menor tempo médio de emergência. A embebição dos propágulos proporciona incrementos na massa seca da parte aérea, das raízes e no diâmetro do coleto.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of fruit maturation on the physiological quality of seeds and on initial growth of Copernicia hospita. Treatments were arranged into a 2 x 3 x 2 factorial, with four replications. The factors were made up of two fruit colourings (yellow-green and dark), three types of propagules (whole fruits, pulped fruits and seeds), and with and without soaking for five days and arranged in a completely randomized design. The observation variables were: percentage, speed and average emergence time; plant height; stem diameter; dry mass of the aerial part and root system. Dark colored fruits, regardless of the propagule type, and pulped yellow-green fruit, with or without soaking, are superior, having a higher percentage for emergence and speed index, and a lower average emergence time. Soaking the propagules increases the stem diameter and dry mass of the aerial part and the roots.

Objetivou-se analisar o efeito da maturação dos frutos na qualidade fisiológica das sementes e no crescimento inicial de Copernicia prunifera. Os propágulos foram coletados de exemplares da arborização urbana de Fortaleza, CE, Brasil. Os tratamentos foram arranjados com quatro repetições em um fatorial 2x3+1; os fatores foram constituídos por duas colorações de frutos (verde-amarelados e escuros), três tipos de propágulos (fruto íntegro, fruto despolpado e semente) e uma testemunha adicional (semente pré-germinada extraída de frutos de coloração escura) dispostos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As variáveis avalidas foram: porcentagem de emergência, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular, e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os frutos verde-amarelados podem ser usados na propagação da carnaúba desde que se proceda à retirada da polpa e da película que envolve a semente. As plantas provenientes dos frutos escuros apresentam maiores valores de altura, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes. Pelo índice de qualidade de Dickson plantas provenientes de frutos de coloração escura possuem melhor padrão de qualidade do que as dos frutos verde amarelados.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of fruit maturation on the physiological quality of seeds and on the initial growth of carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera). Propagules were collected from specimens of urban tree growth in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil. The treatments were set up with four replications in a 2x3+1 factorial arrangement; the factors consisted of two color tones of fruit (yellowish-green and dark colored fruit), three types of propagules (whole fruit, pulped fruit and seeds) and an additional control (pre-germinated seed extracted from dark colored fruits) in a completely randomized design. The variables assessed were: percentage of emergence, plant height, stem diameter, dry weight of the shoots and of the root system, and the Dickson quality index. The yellowish-green fruits may be used in carnauba palm propagation if the pulp and the pellicle around the seed are removed. Plants derived from dark colored fruits exhibit greater values for height, stem diameter, dry weight of the above ground part and of the roots. From the Dickson quality index, plants derived from dark colored fruits have a better standard of quality than those from yellowish-green fruits.

Para avaliar a influência da luz e da temperatura na germinação de sementes de Cochlospermum vitifolium, frutos maduros foram coletados de 12 plantas matrizes. Os tratamentos foram mantidos em câmaras de germinação equipadas com lâmpadas fluorescentes brancas, num arranjo fatorial 2 × 4, constituídos por duas condições de luminosidade, com fotoperíodo de 8 h de luz e 16 h de escuro, e escuro completo, distribuídos em quatro regimes de temperatura, sendo três temperaturas constantes (20, 25 e 30 ºC) e uma temperatura alternada (20-30ºC), utilizando-se um modelo inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes. Efetuaram-se contagens diárias até o 14.º dia após a semeadura, para avaliação da porcentagem de germinação, do índice de velocidade e do tempo médio de germinação. Conclui-se que as sementes de Cochlospermum vitifolium são fotoblásticas neutras e a temperatura constante de 20 ºC é a condição mais adequada para a germinação da espécie.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the influence of light and temperature on the germination of Cochlospermum vitifolium seeds. To this end, ripe fruits were picked from twelve mother plants and the treatments were kept in a germination chamber equipped with white fluorescent lamps in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement consisting of two light conditions, with a photoperiod of 8 h of light and 16 h of darkness and total darkness, divided in four temperature regimes: three constant temperatures (20, 25 and 30 ºC) and an alternating temperature (20-30 ºC), using a completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds. Daily counts were performed until the 14th day after planting to evaluate the percentage of germination, speed rate, and average time of germination. We concluded that the seeds of Cochlospermum vitifolium are neutral photoblastic and the constant temperature of 20 ºC is the best condition for the germination of this species.
