Resumo Procurou-se estabelecer a relação entre o Índice de área foliar no campo (IAFc) de plantios clonais de Eucalyptus saligna Smith e três diferentes Índices de Vegetação (IV) obtidos de uma imagem Landsat 8/OLI: Índice de Vegetação da Diferença Normalizada (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, em inglês - NDVI), Índice da Razão Simples (Simple Ratio Index - SRI) e Índice de Vegetação Ajustado para o Solo (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index - SAVI), com o objetivo de selecionar o melhor estimador do IAF por sensoriamento remoto (IAFSR), obtendo assim a espacialização IAF nos talhões. O IAFc foi obtido utilizando o equipamento LAI-2000 e seu comportamento foi analisado em diferentes idades. Os índices de vegetação foram obtidos por meio de aritmética das bandas 4 e 5 do sensor. A análise de regressão linear simples foi utilizada para ajustar o modelo de estimativa de IAFSR (IAFSRi= β0 + β1 . IVi + εi), sendo os critérios de escolha as estatísticas de R2aj%, Syx% e análise de resíduos. Os resultados mostraram que o índice que melhor estimou o IAFSR foi o SRI (IAFSR=-5,6159 + 0,9716 . SRI), com R2aj%=67,0 e Syx%=12,5. Todos os modelos ajustados mostraram tendência em sobrestimar o IAF em valores inferiores a dois e subestimar o IAF a partir de valores superiores a 3,5 (NDVI e SRI) e superiores a três para SAVI. As equações obtidas para as diferentes idades não produziram melhora nas estimativas de IAFSR.

Abstract The relationship between the ground Leaf area index (LAIg) from clonal plantations of Eucalyptus saligna Smith and three different vegetation indices (VI): Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Simple Ratio Index (SRI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) was evaluated in order to select the best IV to estimate the IAF by remote sensing (LAIRS), and obtaining the spatial distribution of LAI in the stands. LAIg was measured using LAI-2000 and its behavior was examined at different ages. The vegetation indices were obtained from a Landsat 8/OLI through the arithmetic of the bands 4 and 5. The linear regression analysis was used to adjust the model LAIRS (LAIRSi= β0 + β1 . IVi + εi), and the criteria for selecting the best equation were the statistics R2aj%, Syx% and residual analysis. The results showed that the best vegetation index to estimate IAFSR was SRI (LAIRS =-5.6159 + 0.9716 . SRI ), resulting R2adj%=67.0 and Syx=12.5%. The results of all adjusted models tended towards overestimation of LAI in values lower than two and underestimation in values above 3.5 (NDVI e SRI) and above three for SAVI. The equations for different ages produced no improvement in LAIRS.

RESUMO O experimento foi conduzido para testar o uso da semeadura direta a campo como método de implantação de povoamentos de Pinus elliottii Engelm. O preparo do solo resumiu-se a uma roçada mecânica, seguida de coroamento de 40 cm de diâmetro. Em cada ponto de semeadura, foram depositadas quatro sementes de Pinus elliottii Engelm, previamente embebidas em água por 24 horas e protegidas por um copo plástico sem fundo fixado por pequenas estacas de taquara. Os tratamentos testados foram o plantio de mudas produzidas em viveiro como tratamento testemunha, sementes envolvidas por envelope de papel e semeadura direta no solo. Os resultados obtidos não foram satisfatórios, sendo observados no máximo 38,5 % dos pontos de semeadura com mudas no 84o dia após a semeadura. O principal fator que contribuiu para o insucesso do método foi a mortalidade das plantas causada por déficit hídrico e temperaturas elevadas.

ABSTRACT This experiment was undertaken to test the possibility of use of direct field sowing as a method of forest formation. The soil preparation consisted of mechanic mowing followed by cleaning of small circles of 40 cm of diameter, where four seeds of Pinus elliottii Engelm were sowed, previously stratified, and protected by a bottomless plastic glass fastened to the sowing point. The treatments tested were direct sowing, sowing of seeds involved by paper envelop and seedling plantation as testify treatment. The results were not satisfactory, however, being observed at the most 38.46% of the sowing places with seedlings after 84 days of sowing. The main factor that contribuited to the failure of the method was seedling mortality caused by water deficit and high temperatures.

RESUMO O crescimento em volume de árvores de pau-ferro (Astronium balansae) de uma floresta nativa e de um reflorestamento com doze anos de idade foi estudado pela técnica de análise de tronco. O exame das fatias transversais permitiu somente quantificar o crescimento das árvores oriundas de reflorestamento, por causa da inexistência de cerne nas secções transversais. Os dados de crescimento foram modelados por meio do procedimento "Stepwise" de regressão, fornecendo equações de alta precisão e ajuste para descrever o crescimento e incremento médio e corrente anual para uma árvore do estrato dominante e outra do estrato dominado. No período observado, não foi possível identificar o ponto de máximo incremento em razão da pouca idade das árvores.

ABSTRACT Volume growth of pau-ferro trees (Astronium balansae) of a native forest and a twelve-years old plantation was studied using stem analysis technique. Analysis of cross-sectional discs allowed only to quantify the growth of the plantation trees because it was not possible to identify the tree rings in the native forest cross-sections. Growth data was modeled with a stepwise regression procedure which resulted in equations of high precision and good fit to describe the mean and current annual increment of a tree from the dominant and another from the dominated stratum. It was not possible to detect the point of maximum increment because of the little age of the trees.

RESUMO O efeito do espaçamento (3 x 2, 3 x 3 e 3 x 4 m) e da adubação (400 e 800 kg/ha) sobre o crescimento de um clone de Eucalyptus saligna Smith foi avaliado neste trabalho. O crescimento em diâmetro (DAP), altura e volume comercial sem casca por árvore foi estudado dos três aos dez anos de idade, sendo os dados ajustados pela função de Backman. Mediante de aná lise de covariância foi possível verificar que os tratamentos de mesmo espaçamento apresentaram tendências de crescimento estatisticamente iguais para todas as variáveis estudadas. O fator adubação não mostrou influência significativa para a maioria dos tratamentos das variáveis estudadas, em todo o período observado. O fator espaçamento teve influência marcante no crescimento em diâmetro e volume comercial sem casca por árvore. Para a variável altura, apenas as árvores pertencentes ao menor espaçamento mostraram tendência de diminuição do crescimento em altura mé dia no tempo. A produção em volume comercial sem casca por hectare foi menor para os tratamentos que constituíam o maior espaçamento, sendo que, praticamente, não diferiu entre os dois menores.

ABSTRACT In this research, the spacing (3 x 2, 3 x 3 and 3 x 4 m) and fertilization (400 and 800 kg/ha) effects on growth of Eucalyptus saligna clone were studied. The growth in diameter at breast height (Dbh), height (h) and volume per tree were studied from ages between three and ten years, using the Backman ’s function. By covariance analysis it was possible to verify that the treatments with the same spacing showed same growth pattern, for all variables. During all observed period, the fertilization treatment had no effect on mostly of the studied characteristics. The factor spacing had outstanding influence in the growth in diameter and commercial volume without bark per tree. Only the trees under the smallest spacing showed a trend of growing slowly in height over time. The volume yield per ha without bark was smaller for the treatments with larger spacing. No differences in volumetric production were found between the two smaller spacings.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, foram investigadas as propriedades de flexão está tica da madeira de um clone de Eucalyptus saligna Smith. A madeira foi retirada da primeira tora de árvores procedentes de unidades experimentais da Klabin-Riocell com idade de, aproximadamente, 10 anos. As unidades foram estabelecidas com três diferentes espaçamentos (3 x 2, 3 x 3 e 3 x 4 m) e duas doses de adubação (400 ou 800 kg/ha). Trinta árvores (cinco por parcela) foram utilizadas nos ensaios. Os corpos de prova, confeccionados segundo a ASTM D143-93 (1995), foram testados após condicionados em câmara climatizada a 200C e 65% de umidade relativa ou após armazenamento em água. Os resultados indicaram valores 1,296 e 1,4 vezes maiores da madeira seca em relação à verde, para o módulo de elasticidade (MOE) e módulo de ruptura (MOR) respectivamente. Houve aumento da massa específica (ME), do MOR e do MOE com o espaçamento e com a adubação.

ABSTRACT The bending properties of a Eucalyptus saligna Smith clone were studied. Thirty trees, with age of approximately ten years, coming from Klabin-Riocell forests were used in the tests. The specimens, manufactured following ASTM D143-94 (1995), were tested in two series: after conditioning in standard room (200C and 65% relative humidity) or after water soaking. The results indicated values 1,296 and 1,4 times larger for air-dried when compared to moist wood, for bending stiffness and strength, respectively. Wood density, modulus of rupture and elasticity increased with fertilization and tree spacing.

RESUMO Com uma abordagem retrospectiva, foi estudado o crescimento da caúna-da-serra (Ilex brevicuspis Reissek.), cocão (Erythroxilum deciduum), tarumã-de-espinho (Cytharexylum montevidense Sprenger) e capororoca (Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz & Pavon) Mez), nativas da Floresta Estacional Decidual/Floresta Ombrófila Mista de Santa Maria - RS. Foi feita a análise de tronco e a medição de anéis anuais de cada espécie estudada. Com esses dados foi avaliada a tendência de crescimento em volume comercial, o incremento do volume comercial em porcentagem e o fator de forma comercial em função do diâmetro à altura de 1,3 m (DAP). Para o ajuste dos dados obtidos, foram testados cinco modelos diferentes. Revelou-se que, com todas espécies, um polinômio de segundo grau mostrou o melhor ajuste no caso do volume comercial e do fator de forma comercial. O incremento em volume comercial anual percentual foi melhor ajustado por um modelo exponencial, também para cada espécie analisada. Observou-se uma acumulação significativamente diferente do volume sobre o diâmetro das espécies. O tarumã e o cocão mostram uma acumulação rápida em volume, enquanto que a caúna e a capororoca crescem menos rapidamente. Isso é correlacionado com os fatores de forma, nos troncos mais cilíndricos, no caso do tarumã e do cocão. O incremento em volume comercial anual percentual varia entre a faixa de mais de 100% no início do processo de crescimento e abaixo de 10% no final do crescimento estudado.

ABSTRACT The tree species caúna-da-serra (Ilex brevicuspis Reissek.), cocão (Erythroxilum deciduum), tarumã-de-espinho (Cytharexylum montevidense Sprenger) e capororoca (Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz & Pavon) Mez), native in the deciduous seasonal forest / dense tropical forest of Santa Maria were studied using a retrospective analysis. A stem analysis was performed of each species, measuring annual growth rings. Volume growth, commercial form factor and the annual percentual increment of commercial volume were analyzed according to growth at diameter at breast height. For modelling purposes 5 different equations were tested. It could be shown that a polynome of second degree was best adjusted to the growth of commercial volume and commercial form factor while annual percentual increment of commercial volume showed best fit with an exponential function. A significantly different accumulation of volume could be found concerning the different species which were studied. While tarumã and cocão show a rapid accumulation in growth, caúna and capororoca grow more slowly. This is correlated with more cylindric stems in the case of tarumã and cocão. The annual percentual increment of commercial volume moves between the range of more than 100% at the beginning of the growth process and below 10% at the end of the studied growth period.

RESUMO Foram testados em flexão estática sete tipos de painéis aglomerados comercializados no RS. De cada tipo, foram retirados ao acaso cinco painéis e de cada um destes cortados três corpos de prova para os ensaios de flexão segundo a norma ASTM D1037-93 (1995). Os resultados indicam que os painéis enquadram-se nos critérios das normas norte-americanas de padronização. Para alguns tipos de painéis foi possível estabelecer modelos matemáticos relacionando módulos de elasticidade e de ruptura à massa específica.

ABSTRACT Seven types of particleboard, sold in RS, were tested in static bending. From each type, five panels were taken randomly and three pieces were cut from each panel, according to the ASTM D1037-93 (1995) standards. The results indicate that the panels are in accordance with the US commerce standards. For a few type of panels it was possible to establish mathematical models relating modulus of elasticity and rupture to board density.

Foi avaliado, através da técnica de análise de tronco, o crescimento em altura do pau-ferro (Astronium balansae), em reflorestamento com doze anos de idade, no município de São Sepé - RS, permitindo quantificar e descrever o crescimento cumulativo e em forma de taxas anuais médias e correntes em função da idade. Os dados de uma árvore do estrato dominante e uma do estrato dominado foram modelados através do procedimento "Stepwise" de regressão, sendo obtidas equações de alta precisão e ajuste para descrever o crescimento, o incremento médio e corrente anual da espécie. No período de tempo coberto pelos dados, o culmínio do incremento corrente em altura ocorreu aos seis anos e do incremento médio entre o oitavo e nono ano. na árvore dominante, não devendo entretanto, esta constatação ser tomada como definitiva antes da medição do crescimento em árvores mais velhas, o que permitirá verificar ou não a continuidade da queda das taxas de incremento. Não foi possível determinar as idades de culmínio do incrementos na árvore dominada.

The growth in height of Astronium balansae, in a twelve years old plantation stand, in the county of São Sepé-RS, was evaluated by a trunk analyses, allowing to quantify and describe lhe cumulative growth and the average annual and the current rates as a function of the tree age. The data from one dominant tree and from one dominated were modeled by a stepwise regression procedure. High precision equations were fitted to describe the height growth of the specie. During the time period observed, culminating of the current increment in height happened at six years and the respective average increment between the eighty and ninety years age, in the dominant tree. However. this observation should not be taken as final; only after determinatios in older trees are made, which will verify or not the decline in the growth rates. It was no possible to determine the ages at which the incremements will culminate in the dominated tree.

RESUMO A técnica de análise de tronco foi testada para avaliar o crescimento de pau-ferro, Astronium balansae, em povoamento implantado no município de São Sepé, RS e, atualmente, com 12 anos de idade, bem como descrever através de modelos matemáticos o crescimento diamétrico e os incrementos médio e corrente anual para árvores do estrato dominante e dominado. Os resultados demonstraram a pertinência da técnica de análise de tronco para descrever o crescimento passado da espécie, e permitiram desenvolver modelos de alta precisão e bom ajuste para descrever o incremento corrente e médio anual. No período de observação os dados indicam que o culmínio do incremento corrente anual ocorreu aos seis anos e do incremento médio anual aos dez anos para a árvore do estrato dominante, não devendo, entretanto, esta constatação ser tomada como definitiva antes da medição do crescimento em árvores de maior idade, o que permitirá verificar ou não a continuidade da queda das taxas de incremento. Não foi possível determinar na árvore dominada as idades de culmínio de incremento.

SUMMARY In the present work, the feasibility of the trunk analysis technique to describe the growth process of Astronium balansae has been determined in a twelve-year old planted stand. Using this well-know technique, it is possible to describe the diameter growth as well as the average and yearly current the validity of using such a technique to describe the specimen past growth. Moreover the results have allowed the development of high precision and well-fitted patterns to describe the current and yearly average increase. The maximium yearly current increase occurred at six years old, and the maximum yearly average was observed at ten years old for the dominant tree. Nevertheless it was not possible to determine these value for the dominated tree, because of this constant annual growth rate.
