The UV irradiation causes the generation of reactive oxygen species in the skin that mediate oxidative damage, favoring photoaging and skin cancer. Photoaging can be mitigated with the use of plants with antioxidant capacity. This study sought to evaluate the photoprotection capacity of two extracts of Guazuma ulmifolia Lam., aqueous (G1) and acetonic (G2), on UV-A and UV-B irradiated L-929 cells, besides the wound healing capacity. In the antioxidant evaluation, it was found that the extracts have great antioxidant potential. In the irradiation tests, G2 increased cell viability by 19.99%. Furthermore, both extracts have shown wound healing capacity. There was a signifcant restoration of the superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymatic activity by G2 and through ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS/MS), two antioxidant compounds were identifed: (epi)catechin and procyanidin. Resumo O sistema de desinfecção solar, conhecido como SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection), é um método que envolve a exposição da água à radiação solar (luz UVA e calor) para eliminar microrganismos patogênicos. Coagulantes orgânicos extraídos da Moringa oleifera (T1) e Salvia hispanica (T2) foram usados em conjunto com o processo de filtração como auxiliares. Abstract Solar Water Disinfection, known as SODIS, is a treatment method involving the exposure of water to solar radiation (UVA light and heat) to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms. Organic coagulants extracted from Moringa oleifera (T1) and Salvia hispanica (T2) were used in conjunction with the filtration process as auxiliaries. This process included sand filters with particle sizes ranging from 0.25 mm to 0.850 mm and a non-woven geotextile placed at its base. After undergoing the coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation/filtration process, the samples were exposed to sunlight in a solar concentrator using bottles painted on half of their surface (PR) and unpainted bottles (BR). The analyzed parameters included physicochemical properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, and apparent color, as well as microbiological parameters, including E. coli and total coliforms. The results of physicochemical analyses demonstrated the superiority of T1 in terms of turbidity and apparent color. Regarding microbiological analyses, they showed the effective removal of E. coli and total coliforms, with 100% inactivation observed in the samples. It was observed that the applied treatment sequence significantly reduced the microbiological load of the samples; however, it cannot be stated with certainty whether the coagulants exerted any influence on this result. RESUMO A produção de biodiesel tem-se intensificado nos últimos anos e o método tradicionalmente aplicado para sua produção é a transesterificação alcalina homogênea, com a formação de ésteres e glicerol, que precisam ser separados. Além disso, o biodiesel bruto precisa ser purificado no final da reação para remover o catalisador, glicerol, sabão, óleo e álcool restantes, que podem prejudicar o desempenho do motor. Esse processo gera grandes quantidades de águas residuais que precisam ser descartadas de forma adequada para evitar a poluição do meio ambiente. Este artigo apresenta uma revisão do processo de produção de biodiesel e a necessidade de uma etapa de purificação, com foco na geração de efluentes. Métodos tradicionais e avançados para o tratamento de águas residuais provenientes da produção de biodiesel são descritos e discutidos. Detalhes sobre patentes publicadas nos últimos cinco anos, relacionadas a técnicas de tratamento dessas águas residuais, também estão incluídos.

ABSTRACT Biodiesel production has intensified in recent years and the traditionally applied method for its production is homogeneous alkaline transesterification, with the formation of esters and glycerol, which need to be separated. Also, the crude biodiesel needs to be purified at the end of the reaction to remove the remaining catalyst, glycerol, soap, oil, and alcohol, which can impair engine performance. This process generates large quantities of wastewater that need to be properly disposed of to avoid polluting the environment. This article provides a review of the biodiesel production process and the need for a purification step, focusing on wastewater generation. Traditional and advanced methods for treating wastewater originating from biodiesel production are described and discussed. Details regarding patents published in the past 5 years, related to techniques for the treatment of these wastewaters, are also included.

Resumo O principal objetivo do presente estudo foi sintetizar um nanocompósito usando grafeno e nanopartículas de ferrita de manganês (MnFe2O4-G) e avaliar sua atividade antibacteriana para aplicações em processos de tratamento de água. Suas características morfológicas foram avaliadas por técnicas instrumentais tais como microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Os resultados de caracterização indicaram que o nanocompósito apresentou nanopartículas de aproximadamente 25 nm bem dispersas em nanofolhas de grafeno grandes (14 μm) e transparentes. A atividade antibacteriana foi avaliada em um experimento batelada usando uma concentração de 40 μg mL-1 de nanocompósito (MnFe2O4-G, nanopartículas de MnFe2O4 ou óxido de grafeno), 1x105 CFU mL-1 de Escherichia coli e 8 h de tempo de contato à temperatura ambiente. A maior capacidade antibacteriana foi observada para o nanocompósito híbrido (91,91%), decorrente do efeito sinérgico do grafeno e as nanopartículas de ferrita de manganês. Vários mecanismos foram propostos para explicar atividade antibacteriana efetiva do MnFe2O4-G, tais como aprisionamento, stress oxidativo, efeito de corte afiado, entre outros. Portanto, os resultados mostraram que MnFe2O4-G é uma alternativa em potencial para processes de tratamento de água como agente antibacteriano.

Abstract The main objective of this study was to synthesize a nanocomposite using graphene and manganese ferrite nanoparticles (MnFe2O4-G) and to evaluate its antibacterial activity for water treatment purposes. Its morphological characteristics were evaluated by instrumental techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The characterization results indicated that the nanocomposite presented nanoparticles of approximately 25 nm well dispersed in transparent and large (14 μm) graphene nanosheets. The antibacterial activity was evaluated in a batch experiment using a concentration of 40 μg mL-1 of nanocomposite (MnFe2O4-G, bare MnFe2O4 nanoparticles or graphene oxide), 1x105 CFU mL-1 of Escherichia coli, and 8 h of contact time at room temperature. The highest antibacterial capacity was observed for the hybrid nanocomposite (91.91%), due to the synergic effect of graphene and MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. Various mechanisms were proposed to explain the effective antibacterial activity of MnFe2O4-G, such as wrapping, oxidative stress, sharp-edge cutting effect, among others. The results showed that MnFe2O4-G is a potential alternative in water treatment processes as an antibacterial agent.

Resumo O principal objetivo do presente estudo foi modificar a superfície de uma membrana de poliamida comercial com a deposição de nanopartículas de TiO2 pelo método self-assembly sob pressão com alta permeabilidade e atividade fotocatalítica. Mudanças nas características da membrana e seu desempenho nas propriedades fotocatalíticas foram avaliados. Os resultados experimentais indicaram que tanto a hidrofilia da membrana quanto o desempenho fotocatalítico foram significativamente melhorados pela presença de nanopartículas de TiO2 aplicadas sob uma pressão de 1 bar. A deposição das partículas de TiO2 sob pressão foi capaz de manter as partículas na superfície das membranas e sua capacidade fotocatalítica por três ciclos de uso. A membrana fotocatalítica de TiO2 preparada apresentou um grande potencial no tratamento de efluentes e sistemas de reuso devido à sua capacidade de remover o corante azul de metileno por decomposição fotocatalítica e separação física.

Abstract This study modified the surface of a commercial polyamide membrane with the deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles by the self-assembly method under pressure with high permeability and photocatalytic activity. Changes in membrane characteristics and its performance for photocatalytic properties were evaluated. The results indicated that both membrane hydrophilicity and photocatalytic performance were significantly improved by the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles applied under a pressure of 1 bar. The deposition of the TiO2 particles under pressure was able to maintain the particles on the surface of the membranes and their photocatalytic capacity for three cycles of use. The prepared TiO2 photocatalytic membrane presented a great potential for wastewater treatment and for reuse wastewater systems due its ability to remove methylene blue (MB) dye solution by photocatalytic decomposition and physical separation.

Resumo Carvão ativado granular foi impregnado com 1% de ferro e 0,5% de manganês (m/m) para remoção de glifosato em soluções aquosas. O adsorvente foi caracterizado por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, espectroscopia de energia dispersiva, técnicas de adsorção de nitrogênio e análises de potencial zeta. Estudos em batelada foram realizados para investigar os mecanismos de equilíbrio, cinética de adsorção e informações termodinâmicas. Com relação ao tempo de contato e capacidade máxima de adsorção, a adsorção de glifosato aumentou com o tempo de contato e alcançou o equilíbrio em 24 h, com uma capacidade máxima de adsorção de 9,19 mg g-1 a 45°C. Os dados experimentais cinéticos em batelada foram ajustados ao modelo de pseudo-segunda ordem com R2>0,99. Experimentos de equilíbrio foram realizados a 5, 15, 25, 35 e 45°C. As isotermas de adsorção ajustaram-se melhor usando o modelo de Freundlich (R2>0,98), indicando uma adsorção multicamadas do glifosato. Estudos termodinâmicos mostraram que a adsorção de glifosato sobre carvão ativado granular impregnado com manganês e o ferro foi espontânea e viável (ΔG°<0), endotérmica (ΔH°= 20.924 kJ mol-1) e com ΔS° de -73,250 J mol-1 K-1, indicando uma diminuição da entropia do sistema na interface sólido-líquido durante o processo de adsorção do glifosato ao adsorvente.. Assim, o adsorvente desenvolvido neste trabalho mostrou-se uma alternativa para a remoção do glifosato em processos de tratamento e purificação de água.

Abstract Granular activated carbon was loaded with 0.5% manganese and 1.0% iron (m/m) for glyphosate removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, dispersive energy spectrometry, nitrogen adsorption techniques and zeta potential analyses. Batch studies were performed to investigate the adsorption equilibrium, kinetics mechanisms and to obtain thermodynamic information. Glyphosate adsorption increased with the contact time and achieved equilibrium within 24 h, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 9.19 mg g-1 at 45°C. Batch kinetic experimental data obeyed the pseudo-second-order model with R2>0.99. Adsorption isotherm experiments were carried out at 5, 15, 25, 35 and 45°C. The adsorption isotherms presented a better fitting using the Freundlich model (R2>0.98), indicating a multilayer adsorption of glyphosate. Thermodynamics studies showed that the adsorption of glyphosate onto granular activated carbon loaded with manganese and iron was spontaneous and feasible with negative values of ΔG°, endothermic with ΔH° of 20.924 kJ mol-1 and ΔS° of -73.250 J mol-1 K-1, suggesting a decrease in randomness at the solid-liquid interface between glyphosate and the adsorbent. The experimental results demonstrated that activated carbon loaded with manganese and iron may be an alternative for glyphosate removal in water, wastewater treatment and purification processes.

In this article was developed a green synthesis of CuO nanoparticles on vegetal activated carbon (VAC), using pomegranate leaf extract as reducing and stabilizing agent in the removal of multiple pollutants. The impregnated carbons with CuO nanoparticles were characterized morphologically and structurally. The SEM and XRD analysis, after carbons modification, showed that the surface structure remained porous with CuO nanoparticles sizes between 40 and 78 nm. As concern to the contaminants atrazine, caffeine and diclofenac, it is observed that the maximum adsorption capacities practically did not suffer interference by the presence of 1.5% Cu nanoparticles, keeping their values very close to those obtained with pure carbon. The nitrate removal was favored by the impregnation of CuO nanoparticles, from 0.93 mg g-1 to 4.09 mg g-1. The results are promising and demonstrate that it is possible to obtain VAC impregnated whit nanoparticles of CuO by a non-polluting and low cost method.

Resumo O presente estudo consistiu em avaliar a eficiência dos processos de coagulação/floculação, sedimentação e filtração, utilizando a associação do coagulante natural obtido de Moringa oleifera Lam (MO) e do coagulante sintético policloreto de alumínio (PAC) para tratamento de água. Foi utilizada água bruta proveniente da bacia do Rio Pirapó, Maringá, PR, Brasil. Os ensaios de coagulação/floculação e sedimentação foram realizados em Jar Test. Na etapa de filtração utilizou-se um filtro rápido de camada dupla de areia e antracito. A qualidade da água e a eficácia do processo foram avaliadas por meio da análise de parâmetros físicos, químicos e bacteriológicos, além da determinação do tamanho dos flocos e potencial zeta. A utilização da MO contribuiu para a redução da demanda requerida do coagulante sintético PAC. A associação dos coagulantes com 80%/20% ou 60%/40% de MO/PAC garantiram a melhoria dos parâmetros de qualidade, tais como cor aparente, turbidez e UV254nm, assim como a possibilidade de produção de água com o padrão de potabilidade adequado.

Abstract This study evaluated the efficiency of coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation and filtration processes using the combination of natural coagulant from Moringa oleifera Lam (MO) and synthetic coagulant aluminum polychloride (PAC) for water treatment. Raw water was obtained from the Pirapó River Basin, Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil. Coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation assays were carried out in a Jar Test. A two-layer rapid filter filled with sand and anthracite was used in the filtration stage. Water quality and therefore the efficiency of the process were determined by means of the analysis of physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters, including the determination of floc size and zeta potential. The utilization of MO contributed to the reduction of the required demand of synthetic coagulant PAC. The association of coagulants, with 80%/20% or 60%/40% of MO/PAC, ensured an improvement of water quality parameters, such as apparent color, turbidity and UV254nm, as well as the possibility of water production with adequate potability standard.

Resumo Neste estudo, uma membrana polimérica combinada com carvão ativado granular (CAG) impregnado com nanopartículas de óxido de cobre foi avaliada em um processo híbrido com membrana. A avaliação do sistema gravitacional proposto visando a melhoria da qualidade da água destinada ao consumo humano em países em desenvolvimento foi realizada avaliando-se o fluxo permeado, pH, remoção de Escherichia coli, cor, turbidez e a remoção de cloro livre. Técnicas instrumentais tais como adsorção de N2 a 77 K, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET) e análises de espectroscopia de raios-x por dispersão em energia (EDX) foram utilizadas para caracterizar o sistema proposto de membrana e adsorvente. O CAG garantiu maiores remoções de cloro, e também maior fluxo permeado. Além disso, o CAG impregnado com nanopartículas de óxido de cobre exibiu maior remoção de E. coli. Portanto, o sistema de membrana gravitacional híbrido utilizando CAG impregnado com óxido de cobre pode ser considerado como um tratamento potencial alternativo pontual para melhorar a qualidade da água destinada ao consumo humano.

Abstract This study evaluates the application of a polymeric microfiltration membrane in a gravitational filtration module and its combination with granular activated carbon (GAC) impregnated with copper, resulting in a hybrid process. The proposed system would be used to improve the quality of water for human consumption in developing countries. Permeate flux, pH, Escherichia coli removal, color, turbidity and free chlorine removals were evaluated in the applied process. Instrumental techniques, such as N2 adsorption at 77 K, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses were used to characterize the proposed membrane and adsorbent. The GAC ensured higher chlorine removals, as well as higher permeate flux. Furthermore, the GAC impregnated with copper oxide nanoparticles exhibited higher Escherichia coli removal. Therefore, the hybrid gravitational membrane system applying GAC impregnated with copper oxide could be considered as a potential alternative point-of-use treatment to improve the quality of water for human consumption.

Inorganic nanoparticles incorporation in polymer membranes for filtration processes has attracted the attention of researchers in order to improve in some ways their performance. In this work, AgNPs were synthesized "in situ" in cellulose acetate (CA) membrane by chemical reduction of a silver salt. The membranes were prepared by the nonsolvent induced phase inversion method. Asymmetric membranes without (CA-M) and with adsorbed AgNPs (CA-Ag-M) were obtained. Ultrafiltration properties were confirmed for both membranes (16 nm of average pore diameter) and average crystallite size of 21 nm for the adsorbed AgNPs was computed. Contact angle measured with Milli-Q water and dry CA-Ag-M is near zero while for the CA-M is around 80°. The CA-M showed water permeability of 214 Lh-1m-2, while the CA-Ag-M permeability was 1651 Lh-1m-2.

New techniques for treating wastewater, particularly the removal or degradation of organic pollutants and heavy metals, among other pollutants, have been extensively studied. The use of nanostructured iron oxides as adsorbent and photocatalyst for the removal of these contaminants has proved a promising approach, not only because of their high treatment efficiency, but also for their cost-effectiveness, having the flexibility for in situ and ex situ applications. In this review, we briefly introduced the most used kinds of iron oxide nanoparticles, some synthesis techniques for iron oxide nanostructure formation, their potential benefits in environmental clean-up, and their recent advances and applications in wastewater treatment. These advances range from the direct applications of synthesized nanoparticles as adsorbents for removing toxic contaminants or as catalysts to oxidize and break down noxious contaminants (including bacteria and viruses) in wastewater, to integrating nanoparticles into conventional treatment technologies, such as composite photocatalytic filters (membranes, sand and ceramic) that combine separation technology with photocatalytic activity. Finally, the impact of nanoparticles on the environment and human health is briefly discussed.

Este estudo compara o desempenho de duas argamassas para revestimento. A primeira, produzida no traço 1:6 de cal virgem e areia (em volume), maturada. A segunda com a mesma argamassa da primeira, mas que passou pelo processo de retirada de água em estufa. As argamassas receberam o mesmo teor de cimento, compondo o traço 1: 1,5: 9 (em volume) e adições de pó de borracha de pneus inservíveis, nas proporções (6%, 8% ,10% e 12%) em volume de agregado. Determinaram-se: as resistências à compressão axial e resistência à tração na flexão, a energia de deformação, o índice de vazios, a absorção de água por capilaridade, a retração restringida e a resistência de aderência à tração. Os resultados mostraram melhor desempenho para a argamassa seca em estufa com resíduos de borracha, em relação à argamassa maturada. Com redução na absorção de água por capilaridade, na retração restringida, no índice de vazios, manteve a resistência de aderência à tração. Embora tenha reduzido a resistência à compressão, apresentou uma maior energia de deformação.

This study compares the performance of two plastering mortars. The first one was produced at a 1:6 proportion of quicklime powder and sand (by volume) and ripened. The second had the same proportion but underwent a water withdrawal process in the oven. The mortars were given the same content of cement, making the proportion 1:1.5:9 (by volume), and the addition of rubber powder from worn tires at the proportions of 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% by aggregate volume. Axial compressive strength, flexural strength, deformation energy, void content, water absorption by capillarity, restrained shrinkage, and tensile bond strength were measured. The results showed that the second mortar, with rubber waste, performed better than the ripened mortar. With a reduction in the absorption of water by capillarity in the restrained shrinkage and in the void content, it maintained the tensile bond strength. The energy of deformation rose, although the compressive strength dropped.

Neste trabalho avaliou-se a eficiência de diferentes agentes coagulantes no processo de coagulação/floculação no tratamento de efluente de uma indústria de galvanoplastia. Foram avaliados coagulantes do tipo inorgânico (cloreto férrico e sulfato de alumínio) e orgânico (quitosana e sementes de moringa, Tanfloc SG e Acquapol C1). Os parâmetros avaliados foram cor e turbidez. Os testes foram realizados em Jar-Test, utilizando uma velocidade de 120 rpm e um tempo de 1,5 min para a mistura rápida e 20 rpm e 15 min para a mistura lenta. O agente coagulante quitosana apresentou-se como mais promissor para a remoção de cor e turbidez em efluentes de galvanoplastia, removendo 97,76% de cor e 98,06% de turbidez, para a concentração de 7 ppm e tempo de sedimentação de 20 min.

In this work it was evaluated the efficiency of different coagulants agents in the process of coagulation/flocculation in the treatment of effluent from an electroplating industry. The following coagulants were evaluated: inorganic (ferric chloride and aluminum sulfate) and organic (chitosan and seeds of moringa, Tanfloc SG and Acquapol C1). The parameters evaluated were color and turbidity. The experiments were carried out in Jar-Test using a speed of 120 rpm and a time of 1.5 min for fast mixture and 20 rpm and 15 min for the slow mixture. The chitosan coagulant agent presented as more promising for the removal of color and turbidity in effluents from electroplating, removing 97.76% to 98.06% of color and turbidity, respectively for the concentration of 7 ppm and the sedimentation time of 20 min.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma avaliação do perfil sensorial de cinco amostras de doce de leite pastoso formuladas com diferentes concentrações de soro de queijo em pó ou in natura. Os atributos sensoriais avaliados foram aparência, aspecto geral, cor, sabor, textura e intenção de compra. Os resultados foram analisados através de ANOVA e pelo teste de Tukey e mostraram que não houve diferença significativa entre as amostras, sendo assim, a utilização de soro de queijo na fabricação do doce de leite pastoso é uma ótima alternativa para a indústria de laticínios, pois possibilita a obtenção de um produto com qualidade nutricional, de baixo custo e infere ao soro não só caráter de efluente das indústrias alimentícias, mas complemento da alimentação humana.

This study aimed to carry out an evaluation of the sensory profile of five samples of creamy dulce de leche made with different concentrations of whey powder or raw whey. The sensory attributes evaluated were appearance, general aspect, color, texture, and intention to purchase. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test and showed no significant difference between samples, and thus the use of whey powder or raw whey in the manufacture of creamy dulce de leche is a great alternative to the dairy industry since it enables the achievement of a product with nutritional quality, low cost evidencing the serum use in the food industry and as a nutritional supplement.

This paper describes the synthesis of asymmetric polymer membranes used for the production of drinking water. Filtration of water through the membranes is an alternative method for water treatment, where the membrane acts as a selective barrier which blocks the passage of some components. Water samples for this study were inoculated with 10(7) to 10(8) colony forming units (CFU) of Escherichia coli per ml. The process used was phase inversion, and the membranes were prepared beginning with polymer solutions, including polysulfone and polyvinylidene fluoride. In both cases polymethyl methacrylate was added to the polymeric solutions, using N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent. Some of the membranes prepared achieved bacterial removal of 99 to 100%, at a flow of 300 L/h m²

En este trabajo se presenta un estudio sobre la síntesis de membranas poliméricas asimétricas para la producción de agua potable. La filtración usando membranas es un proceso alternativo para el tratamiento de aguas, donde la membrana actúa como una barrera selectiva que bloquea el pasaje de algunos componentes. En este trabajo algunas muestras de agua fueron infectadas con 10(7) a 10(8) unidades formadoras de colonias (UFC) por ml con la bacteria Escherichia coli. El proceso utilizado fue la inversión de fases y las membranas fueron preparadas a partir de soluciones poliméricas, con polisulfona y con fluoruro de polivinilideno. En ambos casos, se agregó poli metacrilato de metilo a las soluciones poliméricas, usando N,N-dimetilformamida como solvente. Algunas membranas removieron entre 99 y 100% de las colonias bacterianas, con un flujo de 300 L/h m²
