ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of serological and molecular tests in the detection of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) in laying and broiler flocks. For this analysis, 344 blood serum samples, 220 tracheal swab samples, and 66 trachea samples were collected. The serum samples were subjected to a rapid agglutination (RSA) test, a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay, and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), nPCR, and vaccine strain PCR were performed on the trachea and tracheal swab samples. RSA was conducted at 1:10 dilution, and resulted in 14.8% (51/344) of samples positive for MG and 28.5% (98/344) for MS. Regarding the results of the HI test, 8.7% (30/344) and 20.3% (70/344) were positive for MG and MS, respectively. Based on the ELISA, 45.6% (177/344) of the samples showed seropositivity for MG, and 57.3% (189/344) for MS. Out of all tracheal swab and trachea samples subjected to PCR, 25.9% (57/220) and 42.8% (31/66) were positive for MG, while 10.0% (22/220) and 18.2% (12/66) were positive for MS, respectively. As determined by the vaccine strain PCR, 56.1% (32/57) of the tracheal swab samples that were positive for MG originated from the MG-F strain, whereas, of the positive trachea samples, 40.6% (13/32) were positive for that vaccine strain. The importance of using different serological and molecular tools in the diagnosis of MG and MS is clear, considering the great variation of results between the techniques, in addition to the possibility that DNA of the agent detected in flocks not having presented seroconversion. Resumo Antecedentes Bandas oligoclonais (BOCs) e cadeias leves de imunoglobulina (free light chains, FLCs, em inglês) Kappa no líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) são marcadores sensíveis da síntese intratecal de imunoglobulina (Ig)G em pacientes com esclerose múltipla (EM). Objetivo Avaliar a taxa de concordância entre BOCs e o índice Kappa (IK) em pacientes com suspeita de EM. Métodos Pacientes com suspeita de EM foram encaminhados a um laboratório especializado em LCR como parte de sua investigação diagnóstica. Amostras pareadas de LCR e soro foram coletadas e investigadas quanto à presença de BOCs e submetidas à determinação do IK. Resultados positivos e negativos foram determinados com ambos os métodos, e estabeleceu-se o percentual de concordância entre eles. Resultados Ao todo, 171 amostras de soro e LCR de 171 pacientes foram incluídas na análise. A média de idade dos pacientes foi de 40 ± 14,2 anos; 18,9% deles eram do sexo masculino, e 81,1%, do sexo feminino. Resultados concordantes entre as BOCs e o IK foram observados em 161 (94,2%) amostras: em 74 (43,3%), ambos foram positivos, e em 87 (50,9%), ambos foram negativos. Em 10 casos, os resultados foram discrepantes: IK positivo/BOC negativo em 8, e BOC positivo/IK negativo em 2. Conclusão Observou-se alto nível de concordância entre o IK e as BOCs. Abstract Background Oligoclonal bands (OCBs) and Kappa free light chains (FLCs) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are sensitive markers of intrathecal immunoglobulin (Ig)G synthesis in patients with multiple sclerosis. Objective To evaluate the concordance rate between OCBCs and the Kappa index (KI) in patients with suspected multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods Patients with suspected MS were referred to a specialized CSF laboratory as part of their diagnostic investigation. Paired CSF and serum samples were collected and submitted to detection of OCBs and determination of the KI. Positive and negative results were determined with both methods, and the percentage of agreement between them was established. Results In total, 171 serum and CSF samples from 171 patients were included in the analysis. The mean age of the patients was of 40 ± 14.2 years; 18.9% of them were male, and 81.1% were female. The OCBs and KI presented concordant results in 161 (94.2%) samples: in 74 (43.3%), both were positive, and in 87 (50.9%), both were negative. In 10 cases, the results were discrepant: KI positive/OCB negative in 8 and OCB positive/KI negative in 2 cases. Conclusion The KI and OCBs presented high concordance level. Currently, the detection of OCBs in the CSF is the standard method for MS diagnosis, but it is time-consuming, and its visual interpretation can be difficult. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar os teores de carbono orgânico total (COT), carbono das substâncias húmicas (SH), e seus estoques, assim como avaliar a estabilidade estrutural do solo de áreas com diferentes formas de uso sob solo de textura franco arenosa. Amostras de solo foram coletadas em três áreas e uma área de referência: Pastagem permanente (PP), plantio direto (PD), Reserva Particular de Patrimônio Natural em processo de regeneração natural (RPPN) e área de Mata nativa (MN). Foram realizadas análises de massa da serapilheira (MS), densidade do solo (Ds), teores de COT, e estoque de C (EstC), variação do EstC (ΔEstC) e índice de estratificação (IE), fracionamento químico da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) e determinações dos teores de C dos ácido fúlvico (C-AF), ácido húmico (C-AH) e humina (C-HUM), e seus respectivos estoques (EstC-AF, EstC-AH e EstC-HUM), ΔEstC de cada fração, extrato alcalino (EA=AF+AH), relação C-AF/C-AH e relação EA/C-HUM, além da análise de agregação, sendo determinado o diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP), diâmetro médio geométrico (DMG), índice de sensibilidade (IS) e nível de ordem (NOrd). A área de MN apresentou maior deposição de MS. As áreas de PP e PD tiveram maior Ds. Teores de COT e EstC foram superiores em RPPN, seguido de MN, sendo o IE também foi superior na área em regeneração, e a ΔEstC positiva apenas nesta área. Áreas de PD, RPPN e MN obtiveram maior proporção de C-AF comparado ao C-AH, porém a fração com maior representatividade em todas as áreas foi o C-HUM. As áreas de PP, RPPN e MN obtiveram os melhores indicadores de estabilidade de agregados, como DMP, DMG, IS e NOrd, assim como maior proporção de macroagregados, sendo a área de PD com baixa estabilidade de agregados. De maneira geral foi observada recuperação nos teores de C nos últimos anos na área de RPPN, acarretando maior estocagem de C, o que demonstra recuperação quantitativa de C no solo nesta área após quatro anos de regeneração natural. Abstract This study aimed to quantify total organic carbon (TOC), carbon of humic substances (HS), and their stocks and evaluate the soil structural stability of areas with different uses under sandy loam soil texture. Soil samples were collected from managed areas and a reference area: Permanent Pasture (PP), No-Till (NT), Private Natural Heritage Reserve in the process of natural regeneration (PNHR) and Native Forest (FN). Dry mass analysis, carbon stock quantification, chemical fractionation of soil organic matter and soil aggregation were carried out. The NF area had the highest deposition of litter mass (ML). The PP and NT areas had the highest bulk density (Bd). TOC and Stock-C contents were higher in PNHR, followed by NF, and stratification index (STRATI) was also higher in the regeneration area. The NT, PNHR, and NF areas had a higher proportion of carbon fulvic acid fraction (C-FA) than carbon humic acid fraction (C-HA), but the fraction with the highest representation in all areas was carbon humin fraction (C-HUM). The PP, PNHR, and NF areas obtained the best aggregate stability indicators, as well as a higher proportion of macroaggregates, with the NT area having low aggregate stability. Recovery of C contents was observed in recent years in the area of PNHR, leading to a greater storage of C, which shows a quantitative recovery of C in the soil in this area after four years of natural regeneration. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the quality of Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum) haylage with varying contents of dry matter (DM) and stored for 90 days. The quality of this grass was evaluated through the lens of a variety of physiochemical properties (e.g., chemical composition, aerobic stability, pH, microbial profile, etc.). A completely randomized design was used with four treatments (in natura, 400, 500, and 600 g kg-1 DM) and five replicates. Treatment with 600 g kg-1 DM yielded the highest DM haylage (p < 0.01) and soluble carbohydrate content (p < 0.01). Treatment in natura resulted in the highest O2 concentration inside the bales (p < 0.01), whereas treatments with 500 and 600 g kg-1 DM resulted in the highest CO2 values. The highest acetic acid concentrations of 36.4 ± 1.6, 38.2±1.6, and 48.9 ± 1.6 g kg-1 DM (p < 0.01) were observed post the in natura, 500 g kg-1 DM, and 600 g kg-1 DM treatments, respectively. Treatment with 600 g kg-1 DM yielded the highest pH value at hour zero (p < 0.01). Tanzania grass with 500 and 600 g kg-1 DM produced the highest quality haylage.

Resumen El objetivo fue evaluar la calidad del henolaje del pasto Tanzania (Panicum maximum) con diferentes contenidos de materia seca y un almacenamiento de 90 días, a través de la composición química, cuantificación de gases, ácidos grasos volátiles, perfil microbiológico, estabilidad aeróbica, pH y nitrógeno amoniacal. El diseño experimental utilizado fue completamente al azar con cuatro tratamientos y cinco repeticiones. Los tratamientos consistían de cuatro contenidos de materia seca (MS) de la planta en el momento de la producción del henolaje del pasto Tanzania siendo: en materia fresca (sin deshidratación), 400, 500 y 600 g kg-1 de MS (deshidratados en pleno sol). El tratamiento con 600 g kg-1 de MS de la planta proporcionó la mayor estimación (p < 0,01) de MS en el henolaje con 581,6 ± 15,4 g/kg, y el mayor (p < 0,01) contenido de carbohidratos solubles con 45,4 ± 1,24 g/kg MS. Después de 90 días de almace namiento, el tratamiento en materia fresca presentó mayores (p < 0,01) cantidades de O2 en el interior de los fardos. En relación al CO2 los mayores índices fueron observados para los tratamientos con 500 y 600 g kg-1 de MS. También se observó el mayor (p < 0,01) contenido de ácido acético en los tratamientos materia fresca y con 500 y 600 g kg-1 de MS de la planta, con 36,4 ± 1,6, 38,2 ± 1,6 y 48,9 ± 1,6 g kg-1 de MS, respectivamente. Para el ácido butírico se obtuvo la mejor (p < 0,01) valoración de 27,0 ± 0,5 g kg-1 de MS en el tratamiento en materia fresca. El tratamiento con 600 g kg-1 de MS mostró mayor (p < 0,01) valor de pH en la hora cero con 6,36 ± 0,03. El tratamiento en materia fresca presentó mayor valor de N-NH3 en la hora cero de exposición al aire con 4,65 ± 0,12. El pasto Tanzania con 500 y 600 g kg-1 de MS, presenta el henolaje de mejor calidad.

Resumo Introdujo: O estresse percebido foi sugerido como um fator de risco para o desenvolvimento da Síndrome Metabólica (SM). No entanto, pouco se sabe desta associaáo entre mulheres. Objetivo: Avaliar o estresse percebido em mulheres com SM. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo transversal, a partir do recorte de um ensaio clínico náo- randomizado, com pacientes de um centro de saúde público (RBR- 43K52N). A variável de desfecho foi a SM, utilizando os critérios do NCEP/ ATPIII. Foram coletados dados sociodemográficos, antropométricos, bioquímicos, hemodinamicos e aplicado da PSS. Resultados: A amostra constituiu-se de 75 mulheres acometidas por SM (47,69±8,15 anos de idade; 155,65±0,07 cm; 82,43±17,79 kg; IMC de 33,54±7,28). Encontrou-se valores elevados de RCQ entre as mulheres estressadas e náo-estressadas. A pontuaáo média da PSS foi de 27,73±9,17. Nos agrupamentos, verificou-se diferena significativa para PSS entre as mulheres estressadas e náo-estressadas (35,24±5,22 e 20,42±5,53, respectivamente; p=0,001). Observou-se também que mulheres estressadas tinham níveis mais elevados de triglicerídeos e níveis mais baixos de HDL-c quando comparadas com mulheres náo estressadas, embora sem diferena estatística. Discussoes: Os achados sugerem que as mulheres categorizadas como estressadas tinham maior pontuaáo da PSS, níveis mais elevados de triglicerídeos e níveis mais baixos de HDL-c quando comparadas com mulheres náo estressadas. Conclusoes: A pontuaáo da PSS foi significativamente maior entre mulheres com parametros lipídicos da SM alterados, com menores níveis de HDL- e aumento de triglicerídeos.

Abstract Introduction: Perceived stress has been suggested as a risk factor for the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MS). However, little is known about this association among women. Objective: To evaluate perceived stress in women with Metabolic Syndrome (MS). Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study, based on a non-randomized clinical trial, with patients from a public health center (RBR-43K52N). The outcome variable was MS, using the NCEP/ATPIII criteria. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical, hemodynamic data and PSS application were collected. Results: The sample consisted of 75 women affected by MetS (47.69± 8.15 years old; 155.65±0.07 cm; 82.43±17.79 kg; BMI of 33.96±6 ,42). High WHR values were found among stressed and non-stressed women. The average PSS score was 27.73±9.17. In the groups, there was a significant difference for PSS between stressed and non-stressed women (35.24±5.22 and 20.42±5.53, respectively; p=0.001). It was also observed that stressed women had higher levels of triglycerides and lower levels of HDL-c when compared to non-stressed women, although without statistical difference. Discussions: The findings suggest that women categorized as stressed had higher PSS scores, higher levels of triglycerides and lower levels of HDL-c when compared to non-stressed women. Conclusions: the PSS score was significantly higher among women with altered MS lipid parameters, with lower levels of HDL- and increased triglycerides.

Materiales y Métodos: estudio transversal, basado en un ensayo clínico no aleatorizado, con pacientes de un centro de salud pública (RBR-43K52N). La variable resultada fue SM, utilizando los criterios NCEP/ ATPIII. Se recogieron datos sociodemográficos, antropométricos, bioquímicos, hemodinámicos y aplicación de PSS. Resultados: La muestra estuvo compuesta por 75 mujeres afectadas por SMet (47,69± 8,15 años; 155,65±0,07 cm; 82,43±17,79 kg; IMC de 33,96±6,42). Se encontraron valores altos de WHR entre mujeres estresadas y no estresadas. La puntuación media de PSS fue de 27,73±9,17. En los grupos, hubo una diferencia significativa para PSS entre mujeres estresadas y no estresadas (35,24±5,22 y 20,42±5,53, respectivamente; p=0,001). También se observó que las mujeres estresadas tenían niveles más altos de triglicéridos y niveles más bajos de HDL-c en comparación con las mujeres no estresadas, aunque sin diferencia estadística. Discusiones: Los hallazgos sugieren que las mujeres categorizadas como estresadas tenían puntajes PSS más altos, niveles más altos de triglicéridos y niveles más bajos de HDL-c en comparación con mujeres no estresadas. Abstract Musculoskeletal symptoms (MS) can derive from injuries or dysfunctions that affect biological tissues such as muscles, bones, and nerves, among others. Military Firefighters (MF) exercise their activities exposed to varied and complex biological conditions, in which the physical demands are intense. Shift work is another remarkable characteristic of the career, which is associated with sleep disorders. Our objective was to estimate the association between the risk of chronification of MS and sleep quality in MF with MS. Our study is a Cross-Sectional Observational Study, whose sample was composed of 753 BM from the Federal District. The analysis was performed with a Sample Characterization Questionnaire, Örebro Musculoskeletal Symptoms Screening Questionnaire (OMPSQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), answered remotely. Statistical analysis used the Spearman Correlation test, p<0.05. The correlation between OMPSQ and PSQI was rated moderate, demonstrating that sleep quality has an influence on the chronification process. The average of the evaluation of Sleep Quality through the PSQI is 8.79, indicating that military personnel present a deficient quality of sleep. There was a correlation between the PSQI score and the OMPSQ of 0.542 (p<0.001), a moderate correlation between the variables. We conclude that MF show correlation between SM and sleep quality, indicating a moderate relationship between the variables, where sleep quality explains 25% of SM. We found that most MF were classified as Low Risk for chronification of SM.

Resumo Os sintomas musculoesqueléticos (SM) podem derivar de lesões ou disfunções que afetam tecidos biológicos como músculos, ossos, nervos, entre outros. Os Bombeiros Militares (BM) exercem suas atividades expostos a condições biológicas variadas e complexas, nas quais as demandas físicas são intensas. O trabalho em turno é outra característica marcante na carreira, o qual está associado a distúrbios do sono. Nosso objetivo foi estimar a associação entre o risco de cronificação de SM e a qualidade do sono em BM com SM. Nosso estudo é um Estudo Observacional Transversal, cuja amostra foi composta por 753 BM do Distrito Federal. A análise foi realizada com um Questionário de Caracterização Amostral, Questionário Örebro de Triagem de Sintomas Musculoesqueléticos (OMPSQ) e com o Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh (PSQI), respondidos remotamente. A análise estatística utilizou o teste de Correlação Spearman, p<0,05. A correlação entre OMPSQ e PSQI foi classificada em moderada, demonstrando que a qualidade do sono apresenta influência no processo de cronificação. A média da avaliação da Qualidade do Sono através do PSQI é de 8,79, indicando que militares apresentam uma qualidade do sono deficitária. Houve correlação entre a pontuação no PSQI e o OMPSQ de 0,542 (p<0.001), correlação moderada entre as variáveis. Concluímos que os BM apresentam correlação entre os SM e a qualidade do sono, indicando uma relação moderada entre as variáveis, onde a qualidade de sono explica 25% dos SM. Verificamos que a maioria dos BM foram classificados como Baixo Risco de cronificação de SM.

Resumo Objetivou-se identificar dentre os componentes da síndrome metabólica (SM) o que mais interfere na forma da face em idosos. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico, transversal, realizado com idosos residentes de Aiquara-BA. Foram obtidas imagens faciais da vista frontal e a SM foi classificada segundo o National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment PanelIII, revisado. A partir da função discriminante, validação cruzada e a distância D2 Mahalanobis, foram extraídas as variações da forma em função da SM. Para avaliar a influência dos componentes da SM na forma da face, utilizou-se a Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP). Participaram 193 idosos e foram identificadas diferenças significativas na forma da face em relação a SM (p<0,01) em ambos os sexos. Para os homens, o ACP 1 foi o HDL-C, este explicou 37% da variação total. Pelo biplot, o HDL-C está associado aos indivíduos que não possuem SM e em idosos com SM, houve uma correlação entre a circunferência da cintura e os triglicerídeos. Para as mulheres, o ACP 1 representou 33,2% da variação total, explicado pelos triglicerídeos. Pelobiplot, houve uma relação entre glicose e circunferência da cintura. Nas mulheres, o HDL-C está relacionado com quem não tem SM. As variações faciais acometidas pela SM, não foram decorrentes da ação de um dos componentes da mesma, mas das relações entre eles. Assim, a morfometria geométrica se mostra como método promissor e possibilita identificar a partir da forma da face fatores de risco cardiovascular e metabólico.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify the metabolic syndrome (MS) components mostly influencing face shape in elderly individuals. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with elderly individuals living in Aiquara County, Bahia State. Facial images at frontal view and MS were classified according to the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (revised version). Discriminant function, cross validation and distance Mahalanobis D2 were used to extract face shape variations due to MS. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate MS components’ influence on face shape. The total of 193 elderly individuals were selected; there were significant differences in face shape due to MS (p <0.01) in both sexes. PCA 1 showed HDL-C in men, which accounted for 37% of the total variation. HDL-C in biplot is associated with individuals who do not have MS and with elderly individuals with MS - there was correlation between waist circumference and triglycerides. PCA 1 represented 33.2% of the total variation in women; this outcome is explained by triglycerides. There was association between blood glucose and waist circumference in biplot. HDL-C is related to women who do not have MS. Facial variations affected by MS did not derive from the action of any of the MS components, but from the association between them. Thus, geometric morphometrics emerges as a promising method that makes it possible identifying heart disease and metabolic risk factors according to face shape features.

RESUMO A esclerose múltipla (EM) é uma doença autoimune, inflamatória e degenerativa do sistema nervoso central. A degeneração axonal é deflagrada pelo processo inflamatório e é o substrato patológico da incapacidade na EM. As intervenções terapêuticas reduzem a inflamação retardando a neurodegeneração e a progressão da incapacidade. A neurodegeneração é avaliada pelo quadro clínico e pela ressonância magnética. Estas mensurações não suficientemente acuradas, havendo necessidade de novos biomarcadores. Diversos biomarcadores têm sido estudados e, até o presente, o mais promissor é o neurofilamento de cadeia leve (NfL). O mesmo é um componente do citoesqueleto que é liberado no líquido cefalorraquidiano após injúria axonal. No presente estudo nós revisamos o conhecimento atual acerca do NfL na EM, síndrome clinica isolada e síndrome radiológica isolada, discutindo criticamente como a determinação deste biomarcador pode contribuir na tomada de decisões clínicas.

ABSTRACT Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, inflammatory, and degenerative disease of the central nervous system. Axonal degeneration is triggered by inflammation and is the pathological substrate of progressive disability in patients with MS. Therapeutic interventions can reduce inflammatory activity, thus delaying neurodegeneration and the progression of disability. Disease activity and neurodegeneration are assessed mainly through clinical evaluation and magnetic resonance imaging. These measures lack sensitivity and accuracy, so new biomarkers are necessary. Several markers have been studied and to date the most promising is neurofilament light (NfL), a component of the axonal cytoskeleton, which is released into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) following axonal damage. In the present study, we review the current knowledge about CSF NfL determination in MS, clinically isolated syndrome, and radiologically isolated syndrome, and critically discuss how CSF NfL measurement may contribute to therapeutic decision-making in these patients.

ABSTRACT Objective The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components among pre- and postmenopausal women, as well as the association between menopausal status and MS. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted at a reference cardiology outpatient clinic in a city located in Northwestern Paraná State, Brazil. A total of 958 medical records of symptomatic climacteric women evaluated between 2010 and 2014 were analyzed. The study consisted of two groups: pre- and post-menopausal women. MS was characterized according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III – NCEP-ATP III-2005. Results MS was observed in 18.5% of the total study population; 9.4% of the premenopausal women and 22.2% of the postmenopausal women displayed MS, corresponding to a relative risk of 2.75. In addition, the frequency of MS increased with age. Regarding the components of MS, postmenopausal women were more likely to have high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) levels < 50 mg/dL; systolic blood pressure (SBP) values ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values ≥ 85 mmHg; and fasting glucose levels ≥ 100 mg/dL. Conclusion MS was more prevalent among postmenopausal women than among premenopausal women.

Background: during recent years consistent studies have characterized the relationship between moderate and severe protein-calorie malnutrition and the appearance of non-communicable diseases in adulthood like metabolic syndrome (MS). Aim: to analyze the relationship between moderate and severe protein-calorie malnutrition during the first 1 000 days of life and the MS in a cohort of adults from Curicó, Chile. Material and methods: we studied 49 young adults who had suffered moderate to severe protein-calorie malnutrition during their first two years of life. Anthropometry, blood pressure measurement and laboratory tests were performed, and the burden of MS attributes was determined. Results: the prevalence of MS was 14.3% with no significant differences by gender, showing a direct and significant association between burden of MS and body mass index, waist / height index, blood pressure, plasma levels of glucose and triglyceride, and an inverse association with HDL. Conclusion: systolic blood pressure and plasma level of triglyceride represented the most important risk factors for SM in this cohort. We found no association between the presence of protein-calorie malnutrition and MS.

Introducción: estudios consistentes durante los últimos años han caracterizado la relación entre la desnutrición calórico-proteica (DCP) y el desarrollo de enfermedades no transmisibles en la adultez, como el Síndrome Metabólico (SM). Objetivo: analizar la relación entre SM en la adultez y la DCP durante los primeros 1.000 días de vida en una cohorte de adultos recientemente generada en Curicó, Chile. Material y métodos: se analizaron 49 sujetos adultos jóvenes que durante sus primeros dos años de vida sufrieron desnutrición calórico-proteica moderada a severa mediante la realización de antropometría, medición de la presión arterial y exámenes de laboratorio. Se determinó la prevalencia del SM y la carga de sus atributos. Resultados: se obtuvo una prevalencia de SM del 14,3% sin diferencias significativas por género, con una asociación directa y notable entre la carga de SM, el índice de masa corporal (IMC), el índice cintura/talla, presión arterial y niveles plasmáticos de glicemia y triglicéridos (TG), y una asociación inversa con colesterol HDL. Conclusión: la presión arterial sistólica y el valor plasmático de TG representaron los factores de riesgo más importantes del SM en esta cohorte. No se encontró asociación entre la DCP en los 1.000 primeros días de vida y el SM en la adultez.

Esclerose múltipla (EM) com início na infância e adolescência constitui um desafio para o diagnóstico e manejo da doença. A proposta do presente estudo foi avaliar as características da EM de início precoce em pacientes brasileiros. Métodos Coleta de dados retrospectiva de arquivos de unidades especializadas em atendimento da EM. Resultados A partir de 20 unidades de EM de nove estados brasileiros, foram coletados 117 casos de EM com início antes dos 18 anos de idade. Estes pacientes tinham uma média de 10 anos de duração da doença, de maneira geral apresentavam pouca incapacidade , com um surto a cada dois anos e meio. A média de idade no início da doença era 13,7 anos. Conclusão O presente estudo apresenta uma grande série de casos brasileiros de EM pediátrica. Embora alguns pacientes tenham apresentado forma grave de EM, de maneira geral o grupo de pacientes cuja EM iniciou-se na infância ou adolescência apresentou uma forma relativamente leve da doença no Brasil.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) starting in childhood and adolescence poses a challenge for diagnosis and management of the disease. The aim of the present study was to assess the characteristics of early onset MS in Brazilian patients. Methods Retrospective data collection from specialized MS units. Results From 20 MS units in 11 Brazilian states, 117 cases of MS starting before the age of 18 years were collected. These patients had an average of 10 years of disease duration, still typically with low disability and one relapse every 2.5 years. The mean age for disease onset was 13.7 years. Conclusion The present study introduces a large series of Brazilian cases of pediatric MS. Although some patients presented a very severe form of MS, on the whole the group of patients with MS starting in childhood or adolescence presented a relatively mild form of this disease in Brazil.

A variação sazonal é um fator chave na regulação do metabolismo energético e da reprodução em vários mamíferos, incluindo os morcegos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as reservas energéticas do morcego insetívoro Molossus molossus ao longo das estações anuais associadas ao seu ciclo reprodutivo. Foram coletados machos adultos durante as quatro estações anuais na cidade de Viçosa - MG, Brasil. Para as análises metabólicas foram coletados tecidos e sangue, e os testículos foram removidos para análises histológicas e morfométricas. Os resultados mostram que as concentrações de glicogênio no fígado e músculo peitoral foram significativamente menores no inverno. O índice adiposo foi significativamente maior no outono em relação ao inverno e primavera. Os túbulos seminíferos apresentaram maiores diâmetros nos animais coletados no outono e inverno, indicando um maior investimento na produção espermática durante estas estações. A porcentagem de células de Leydig foi maior no verão em comparação com outono e inverno. Sugere-se que M. molossus apresenta um tipo de reprodução sazonal com dois picos de atividade testicular: uma no outono, com maior produção de espermatozóides (espermatogênese), e outra no verão, com maior produção de hormônio (esteroidogênese). O padrão metabólico pode estar associado a eventos reprodutivos, especialmente devido ao maior armazenamento de gordura observado no outono, que coincide com o desenvolvimento dos túbulos seminíferos.

Seasonal variation is a key factor regulating energy metabolism and reproduction in several mammals, including bats. This study aimed to track seasonal changes in the energy reserves of the insectivorous bat Molossus molossus associated with its reproductive cycle. Adult males were collected during the four neotropical annual seasons in Viçosa - MG, Brazil. Blood and tissues were collected for metabolic analysis and testes were removed for histology and morphometry. Our results show that liver and breast muscle glycogen concentrations were significantly lower in winter. The adiposity index was significantly higher in the fall compared to winter and spring. Seminiferous tubules were greater in diameter in animals captured in fall and winter, indicating a higher investment in spermatic production during these seasons. The percentage of Leydig cells was higher in summer compared to fall and winter. We suggest that M. molossus presents a type of seasonal reproduction with two peaks of testicular activity: one in fall, with higher sperm production (spermatogenesis), and another in summer, with higher hormone production (steroidogenesis). The metabolic pattern may be associated with reproductive events, especially due to the highest fat storage observed in the fall, which coincides with the further development of the seminiferous tubules.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a correlação de três critérios de síndrome metabólica (SM) para adolescentes e identificar fatores associados. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com 65 pacientes obesos entre 10 e 18 anos do Ambulatório de Crianças e Adolescentes Obesos do HC-Unicamp. SM foi definida de acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), International Diabetes Federation (IDF) e Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Buscaram-se fatores associados a SM em dados clínicos, antropométricos e laboratoriais. RESULTADOS: Dos 65 pacientes, nenhum foi diagnosticado como SM pela OMS, sendo 18 (27.6%) pelo IDF e 19 (29.2%) pelo ATP III. A correlação entre IDF e ATP III foi excelente (kappa 81%). Neste estudo, a puberdade e os triglicérides apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significativa entre pacientes com e sem SM, sendo a primeira para o ATP III (p = 0.03) e o segundo para IDF (p = 0.005) e ATPIII (p = 0.001). CONCLUSÃO: O critério da OMS não parece ser adequado para adolescentes. Há correlação excelente entre os critérios do IDF e ATP III. Puberdade e triglicérides foram fatores associados à SM.

OBJECTIVE: To study the agreement among three distinct criteria for metabolic syndrome (MS) adapted to adolescents, and to identify associated factors for MS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 65 obese subjects aged 10 to 18 years, attended to at the Outpatient Clinic for Obese Children and Adolescents at the Clinical Hospital of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). MS was defined using the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Clinical, anthropometrical, and laboratorial data were associated to MS. RESULTS: From the 65 subjects, none had MS according to the WHO criteria, while 18 were diagnosed with MS (27.6%) according to the IDF, and 19 (29.2%) according to the ATP III. Agreement between IDF and ATP III was excellent (kappa 81%). In this study, puberty and triglycerides levels showed significant statistical difference when comparing subjects with and without MS, the first for ATP III (p = 0.03), and the second for IDF (p = 0.005) and ATP III (p = 0.001) criteria. CONCLUSION: The WHO criteria does not seem to be adequate for adolescents. IDF and ATP III criteria had an excellent agreement. Puberty and triglycerides were associated with MS.

As epífitas têm papel fundamental como indicadores ambientais e podem refletir o grau de preservação local. Esta pesquisa foi desenvolvida na Floresta Nacional de Ipanema, São Paulo, Brasil e objetivou caracterizar a comunidade epifítica vascular, analisando sua abundância e distribuição nos sítios de borda e de interior da floresta. Foram encontradas 16 espécies, pertencentes a 12 gêneros e seis famílias. Houve predominância dos holoepífitos característicos. Na borda foram amostradas sete espécies, com diversidade de Shannon de H' = 1,282 e equabilidade de Pielou de J = 0,658. No interior foram amostradas 13 espécies, com diversidade de Shannon de H' = 1,587 e equabilidade de Pielou de J = 0,619. Os resultados indicaram que a baixa diversidade da área pode estar relacionada a perturbação da floresta e a fitofisionomia pesquisada, e que há ação do efeito de borda sobre as epifíticas vasculares da borda e do interior da floresta, alterando a composição específica e a distribuição vertical da comunidade.

Epiphytes have a key role as environmental indicators and may reflect the degree of local preservation. This research was performed at the Ipanema National Forest, São Paulo State, Brazil, and aimed to characterize the vascular epiphytic community, taking into consideration its abundance and distribution at forest-interior and edge site. In the survey, 16 species belonging to 12 genera in six families were found. Characteristic holoepiphytes were the dominant type of epiphytes. At the forest edge, seven epiphytic species were found, with H' = 1.282 and J = 0.658. At the inner forest site, 13 species were sampled, with H' = 1.587 and J = 0.619. The results indicated that the low diversity of the area may be related to forest disturbance and vegetation types studied, and an edge effect was noted in the vascular epiphytes, both at forest edge and forest-interior sites, leading to changes in species composition and vertical distribution of the community.

INTRODUÇÃO: O papel da aldosterona na fisiopatologia da disfunção endotelial relacionada à síndrome metabólica (SM) tem sido objeto de estudos. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o bloqueio da aldosterona sobre a vasodilatação fluxo mediada (VDFM) e sobre parâmetros renais e metabólicos em indivíduos com SM. MÉTODOS: Dezenove indivíduos com SM foram submetidos a exame clínico; exames complementares: glicose, insulina, lipidograma, depuração da creatinina, microalbuminúria e a monitorização ambulatorial da pressão arterial (MAPA) e análise da VDFM antes e após 16 semanas do uso de espironolactona. RESULTADOS: Após o tratamento, observou-se aumento da VDFM, de 7,6 ± 5,63% para 15,0 ± 6,10% (p < 0,001), com redução não significante da pressão sistólica e diastólica (142,2 ± 16,37 mmHg para 138,8 ± 16,67 mmHg e 84,3 ± 10,91 mmHg para 82,7 ± 9,90 mmHg, respectivamente). O colesterol HDL (High-density lipoprotein - lipoproteína de alta densidade) aumento de modo significante, a microalbuminúria apresentou tendência à redução, enquanto a depuração da creatinina não variou significativamente com o tratamento. CONCLUSÃO: O bloqueio da aldosterona em pacientes com SM melhorou a VDFM, sem induzir alterações no perfil metabólico e em parâmetros renais.

INTRODUCTION: The role of aldosterone in the pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome (MS)-related endothelial dysfunction has been the subject of recent research. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of aldosterone blockade on flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and on renal and metabolic parameters of patients with the MS. METHODS: 19 MS subjects underwent clinical examination, laboratory work-up (serum lipid profile, glucose and insulin; creatinine clearance; microalbuminuria investigation), ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), and FMD analysis before and after 16 weeks of aldosterone blockade with spironolactone. RESULTS: After the treatment period, FMD increased from 7.6 ± 5.63% to 15.0 ± 6.10% (p < 0.001), associated with a non-significant decrease of blood pressure (from 142.2 ± 16.37 mmHg to 138.8 ± 16.67 mmHg, and from 84.3 ± 10.91 mmHg to 82.7 ± 9.90 mmHg, respectively). HDL-cholesterol significantly increased, microalbuminuria showed a decreasing trend and creatinine clearance did not change after treatment. CONCLUSION: Aldosterone blockade in patients with the MS improved FMD without interfering with metabolic and renal parameters.
