ABSTRACT. Brazil has high soil loss rates due to its tropical and subtropical climate characteristics. In this sense, soil use and management practices may minimize such losses. In this study, experimental plots were monitored for eight years in southern Brazil during natural rainfall events. Treatments were as follows: I) bare soil under conventional tillage, II) barley-oat/ soybeans succession under conventional tillage, III) oat-lupine-vetch/ maize succession under conventional tillage, IV) barley-oat/ soybeans succession under no-tillage, and V) oat-lupine-vetch/ maize succession under no-tillage. Data on rainfall amount and erosivity indices (EI30, EI20, and EI10) were subjected to regression analyses, evaluating the effects of climatic variables on soil and water losses. We could also analyze crop species, conventional and no-tillage systems, and winter and summer seasons. The highest soil and water losses occurred in treatments under conventional tillage. In addition, soybeans treatments increased soil and water losses. Maize under no-tillage was the most efficient practice, as it had soil losses (3.4 times) and water losses (1.5 times) lower than soybeans under conventional tillage. Rainfall amounts and EI30 were better correlated with soil and water losses in conventional tillage treatments. However, EI10 could better explain the soil losses from the conservationist treatment. Abstract Henrik and Torsten Sjögren (/'ogrƏn/ or SHOH–grƏn) were two Swedish physicians living in the same period, but completely unrelated, except for their notable contributions to Medicine. The first one described keratoconjunctivitis sicca, afterward called Sjögren's syndrome, and a fishing net aspect retinal pigmentation affecting visual acuity, nowadays known as Sjögren reticular dystrophy. The last one contributed to the understanding of Spielmeyer-Sjögren disease, Marinesco-Sjögren, and Sjögren-Larsson syndromes, all related to genetic disorders and neurological symptoms. ABSTRACT Agriculture intensification in Southern Brazil’s subtropical regions combined with the frequent occurrence of erosive rainfall has rendered the area a global water erosion hotspot. In this scenario, understanding and regulating erosion processes at the river catchment scale is critical for mitigating soil and water resource degradation. Traditional methods for tracing sediment sources are expensive and time-consuming and justify the development of alternative approaches. Therefore, in this study, we employed diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analyses in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS), near-infrared (NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR) ranges, combined with multivariate models and spectral pre-processing techniques to estimate sediment source contributions in a homogeneous subtropical catchment (Conceição River, 804 km²). Soil samples (n = 181) were collected to characterize the four potential sediment sources, including: cropland (n = 78), stream bank (n = 36), unpaved road (n = 40) and pasture (n = 27). Moreover, 44 sediment samples were collected, including suspended sediment (n = 8), fine sediment deposited on the riverbed (n = 15), and suspended sediment samples collected in the water column during storm events (n = 21). Vector machine (SVM) model outperformed the others, with better accuracy and reliability. While UV-VIS spectra proved less effective due to soil homogeneity across the catchment, NIR and MIR spectra provided valuable information for discriminating sediment sources. Furthermore, reducing the number of potential sources (from four to three or two) improved model predictions, especially when distinguishing between surface sources (cropland and pasture) and subsurface sources (unpaved roads and stream banks). The study’s findings shed light on the power of efficient and cost-effective alternative methods for assessing sediment sources, which are vital for promoting effective erosion control and sustainable land management in similar regions. N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a serotonergic psychedelic that, when combined with monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors in the hallucinogenic beverage commonly known as ayahuasca, surpasses most common orally administered psychoactive drugs. There is a growing interest in the therapeutic potential of DMT due to recent clinical data showing the improvement of cognitive deficits associated with depression and Alzheimer’s disease. The development of analytical methodology for the monitoring of concentrations of DMT molecules to control the appropriate dosage for their use is essential for the treatment of patients. For this, we propose a novel flexible inkjet-printed paper substrate based on Au nanostars as proof of concept for DMT detection by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The substrate was applied to detect DMT in water as a first approach to more complex matrices like ayahuasca beverages or blood samples. The optimization and performance of SERS substrates with different print cycles indicate that one print is enough to achieve the great performance of the flexible paper substrates. Abstract Objectives: The objective of this study is to describe the rehabilitation of individuals with Congenital Malformations (CMF) during the use of an External Fixator (EF) in Aquatic Therapy (AT) and to analyze the association between diagnosis, EF type and location with rehabilitation process outcomes, surgical intervention, and adverse effects. Methods: This retrospective study included 29 medical records from which the personal and rehabilitation data of the patient were collected. The AT used was described and the outcome variables were associated. The medical records were selected by screening the database of the CMF clinic at the AACD. The inclusion criteria were participants with CMF who used EF treated between 2011 and 2019 of both genders and without age restriction. The exclusion criteria were incomplete medical record data or not undergoing AT while using EF. The extracted data included diagnosis, gender, age, EF type and location, objective of the surgery, adverse events, surgical interventions, time of rehabilitation in AT, physiotherapeutic objectives, and rehabilitation process outcomes in AT. Results: The mean age of the participants was 12.1 ± 3.99 years, with male predominance (55 %) and hemimelia cases (37 %). The most used EF was circular (51 %), located in the femur (37 %), and the main objective of surgery was bone lengthening (52 %). The most recurrent adverse effect was infection (62 %) and 76 % completed AT. There was no association between the variables analyzed. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar parâmetros periodontais em transplantados renais comparados a um grupo controle, devido às possíveis interferências ocasionadas após uso de medicações imunossupressoras. Métodos: Estudo epidemiológico observacional transversal, composto por 80 pacientes. Os transplantados renais, composto por 40 pacientes, nos quais analisou-se o índice de placa, a profundidade clínica de sondagem, o nível de inserção clínica, sangramento à sondagem e a presença de hiperplasia gengival. E o grupo controle, composto por 40 pacientes, avaliados de acordo com os mesmos índices. Resultados: Não foi encontrada diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos quanto à presença de placa (p=0,279), sangramento (p=0,262), severidade (p=0,707) e localização (p=0,949) da periodontite, somente em relação ao grau (p=0,041), onde o grau C foi mais presente em transplantados renais, sendo o tempo de transplante um fator contribuinte. ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate periodontal parameters in renal transplant patients compared to a control group, due to the possible interference caused by the use of immunosuppressive medication. Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational epidemiological study of 80 patients. The transplant patients consisted of 40 patients, in whom the plaque index, clinical probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing and the presence of gingival hyperplasia were analyzed. The control group, made up of 40 patients, was assessed according to the same indices. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the groups with regard to the presence of plaque (p = 0.279), bleeding (p = 0.262), severity (p = 0.707) and location (p = 0.949) of periodontitis, only in relation to the grade (p = 0.041), where grade C was more present in transplant patients, with transplant time being a contributing factor. RESUMO: O uso contínuo de inseticidas sintéticos para o controle do mosquito vetor de arbovírus, Aedes aegypti, tem levado à seleção natural de populações resistentes a diferentes grupos químicos. Assim, compostos derivados de plantas surgiram como uma alternativa viável para o controle desses vetores. Desse modo, este estudo foi realizado para determinar se o extrato metanólico bruto (CME) das folhas de Clibadium surinamense possui atividade larvicida contra Ae. aegypti. Para isso, Larvas de terceiro e quarto instar de Ae. aegypti foram mantidas em recipientes contendo 99 mL de água e 1 mL de CME diluído em etanol nas concentrações de 250, 500, 750 e 1000 ppm. O grupo controle continha 99 mL de água e 1 mL de etanol. Três ensaios foram realizados em triplicata para cada grupo. Após 24 horas de observação, de acordo com a análise de variância de uma via,os valores de CL50 e CL90 foram de 283 e 430 ppm, respectivamente. Em conclusão, demonstramos pela primeira vez que o CME das folhas de C. surinamense apresenta atividade larvicida contra Ae. aegypti em condições de laboratório.

ABSTRACT: The continuous use of synthetic insecticides for controlling the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti has led to the natural selection of mosquito populations resistant to different chemical groups. Thus, plant-derived compounds have emerged as a viable alternative for vectorcontrol. This study determined whether the crude methanolic extract (CME) from leaves of Clibadium surinamense has larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti. Third- and fourth-instar Ae. Aegyptilarvae were kept in recipients containing 99 mL of water and 1mL of ethanol-diluted CMEat concentrations of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 ppm. The control group contained 99 mL of water and 1 mL of ethanol. Three trials were performed in triplicate for each group.After 24 hours of treatment, the LC50 and LC90 values were determined to be 283 and 430 ppm, respectively, according to one-way analysis of variance. In conclusion, we have demonstrated for the first time that the CME from leaves of C. surinamense show larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti under laboratory conditions.

Estudio transversal realizado entre julio y diciembre de 2019, con estudiantes de los dos cursos de Farmacia de la Universidad Federal de Sergipe. Se recopilaron los siguientes datos: 1) datos sociodemográficos; 2) Factores relacionados con la intencionalidad de la evasión, preguntas sobre bloqueo y retención en módulos/disciplinas. Participaron del estudio 335 estudiantes, 132 del campus de Lagarto y 203 de São Cristóvão. De ellos, 69,30% (n=232) eran mujeres, la mayoría (81,20%) entre 18 y 24 años, 60,90% (n=204) se declararon pardas, 96,70% eran solteras y 5,10% (n=17) tenían hijos. Sobre la retención y la intencionalidad de la evasión, 176 (52,50%) afirmaron que ya habían reprobado y 62,10% (n=208) tenían la intención de evasión. RESUMO: O estudo objetivou avaliar possíveis fatores associados à retenção e à intencionalidade de evasão do curso de Farmácia de uma universidade pública do Nordeste. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado entre julho e dezembro de 2019 com estudantes dos dois cursos de graduação em Farmácia, da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Para coleta de dados, utilizou-se um instrumento que contemplava: 1) Dados Sociodemográficos; e 2) Fatores ligados à intencionalidade de evasão, questões sobre trancamento e reprovação em módulos/disciplinas. Participaram da pesquisa 335 estudantes, sendo 132 do Campus Lagarto e 203 estudantes de São Cristóvão. Desses, 69,30% (n=232) eram mulheres; a maioria (81,20%) apresentou idade entre 18 e 24 anos; 60,90% (n=204) se autodeclaram pardos; 96,70% eram solteiros; e 5,10% (n= 17) possuíam filhos. Quanto à reprovação e intencionalidade de evasão, 176 (52,50%) afirmaram já terem reprovado, e 62,10% (n=208) apresentaram a intenção de desistir do curso. ABSTRACT: The study aimed to evaluate possible factors associated with retention and dropout at the Pharmacy degree of a public university in the Brazilian Northeast. This cross-sectional study was conducted between July and December 2019 with students of two Pharmacy undergraduate degrees at the Federal University of Sergipe. To collect data, we used an instrument that included: 1) socio-demographic data and 2) factors related to dropout intentions, questions about leave of absence, and failure in modules/disciplines. Three hundred thirty-five students participated, 132 from the Lagarto campus and 203 from São Cristóvão. Out of those, 69.30% (n = 232) were women, the majority (81.20%) between 18 and 24 years old, 60.90% (n = 204) declared themselves mixed race, 96.70% were single, and 5.10% (n = 17) had children. Regarding failure and intention to drop out, 176 (52.50%) stated that they had already failed, and 62.10% (n = 208) intended to drop out of the course. Among the factors that lead to dropout intentions are: “schedule of the disciplines offered,” “curriculum matrix,” “teaching methodology,” “form of evaluation,” “relationship between student and teacher/coordinator,” “interpersonal relationships,” “student assistance,” “low remuneration of the professional,” “financial difficulties,” “lack of study skills,” “difficulties of adaptation to the university,” “discontent or demotivation with the course,” “learning difficulties, translated into disapproval and low frequency,” “non-adaptation to the course,” and “mental health problem.” The results reinforce the need for strategies that support students during undergraduate studies to reduce the impact of retention and dropout in higher education. ABSTRACT Children have an increased likelihood of becoming carriers of the chronic hepatitis B virus. A total of 1,381 children and adolescents were assessed in five municipalities of Maranhao State, Brazil, for detection of anti-HBc, HBsAg and anti-HBs serologic markers and sociodemographic and behavioral features. Among those who were HBsAg negative and anti-HBc negative, the proportion of anti-HBs positives was calculated after the individuals had completed the vaccination schedule. The robust variance of the Poisson’s regression model was used in order to have adjusted tables and calculate the prevalence ratio. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with the prevalence of anti-HBc with or without HBsAg and the vaccine response. It was observed that 163 children were anti-HBc positive and nine individuals were HBsAg positive. The factors associated with the infection were: municipality of residence (residing in Morros municipality or Humberto de Campos municipality), residence in a rural area, aged between 13 and 15 years old, and illicit drug use. The percentage of individuals who were anti-HBc negative and received all three doses of the vaccine was 48.5%. Among these, only 276 (38.9%) had antibodies at protective concentrations. In an adjusted analysis, Morros municipality presented an increased positivity of vaccine response (p < 0.001), and the age ranging between 6 and 10 years old presented a reduced frequency of response. Resumo O parasita filarial canino, Dirofilaria immitis, causa doença zoonótica, mas não tem sido registrado em Manaus, capital do estado do Amazonas, há mais de um século. Neste trabalho, foi relatado uma infecção por D. immitis alóctone e 27 autóctones de um levantamento de microfilárias em 766 amostras de sangue em cães domésticos, coletados entre 2017 e 2021 em Manaus. A prevalência de 15,44% (23/149) foi estabelecida em áreas rurais, 1,22% (4/328) para áreas periurbanas e de 0,35% (1/289) para duas clínicas veterinárias localizadas na zona urbana da cidade. Abstract The canine filarial parasite Dirofilaria immitis has not been reported in Brazil´s Amazonas state capital, Manaus, for over a century. Here, we report one imported and 27 autochthonous D. immitis infections from a microfilarial survey of 766 domestic dog blood samples collected between 2017 and 2021 in Manaus. An Overall prevalence estimate of 15.44% (23/149) was calculated from our two rural collection sites; a prevalence of 1.22% (4/328) was estimated at our periurban collection site, and an overall prevalence of 0.35% (1/289) was calculated from our two urban clinic collections. RESUMO Para se obter um cultivo eficiente de sorgo granífero em sistemas de produção que utilizam água salina, torna-se necessário um manejo hídrico adequado para maximizar sua produção. Com isto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação de frações de lixiviação no manejo da irrigação com água salina na produção de variedades de sorgo granífero e na distribuição de água e sais no perfil do solo, em condições semiáridas. O estudo foi realizado no município de Petrolina, região semiárida do Brasil. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em parcelas subdivididas; sendo as parcelas quatro frações de lixiviação (FL): 0; 5; 10 e 15% com água salina proveniente de poço artesiano, as subparcelas três variedades de sorgo granífero: 1011-IPA, 2502-IPA e Ponta Negra e as subsubparcelas dois ciclos de cultivo (1º e 2º corte). As variáveis avaliadas foram: distribuição de água e sais no perfil do solo, variáveis biométricas, biomassa fresca, biomassa seca e produtividade de grãos. A aplicação de frações de lixiviação na irrigação com água salina promove melhor distribuição de sais no perfil do solo, com incrementos de até 60% no rendimento de grãos das variedades de sorgo avaliadas. A produção das variedades 1011-IPA e Ponta Negra é uma alternativa viável em sistemas irrigados com água salina com condutividade elétrica média de 4,19 dS m-1, em Argissolo Vermelho Amarelo, sob condições semiáridas.

ABSTRACT In order to obtain an efficient cultivation of grain sorghum in production systems that use saline water, an adequate management becomes necessary for maximizing its production. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of leaching fractions in the saline water irrigation management on the production of sorghum varieties and on the distribution of water and salts in the soil profile, under semiarid conditions. The study was carried out in the municipality of Petrolina, semiarid region of Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replicates, in split-split plots; four leaching fractions (LF): 0, 5, 10, and 15% with saline water from artesian well in the plots, three varieties of grain sorghum: 1011-IPA, 2502-IPA and Ponta Negra in the subplots, and two crop cycles (1st and 2nd cut) in the sub-subplots. The evaluated variables were distribution of water and salts in the soil profile, biometric variables, fresh biomass, dry biomass, and grain yield. Application of leaching fractions of up 15% in saline water irrigation promotes better distribution of salts in the soil profile, with increments of up to 60% in the grain yield of the sorghum varieties evaluated. The production of the varieties 1011-IPA and Ponta Negra is a feasible alternative in systems irrigated with saline water with average electrical conductivity of 4.19 dS m-1, in Ultisol, under semiarid conditions.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to measure the intra- and inter-rater reliability of the quantitative sensory testing for measuring the thermal pain threshold on myofascial trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle of individuals with chronic neck pain. METHODS: Thirty female participants were included, aged between 18 and 45 years and with bilateral myofascial trigger points, active and centrally located in the upper trapezius muscle. Two measurements with quantitative sensory testing were performed by each examiner at an interval of 1 week between them. RESULTS: We observed substantial reliability for the intra-rater analysis (intraclass correlation coefficient ranging between 0.876 and 0.896) and excellent reliability for the inter-rater analysis (intraclass correlation coefficient ranging between 0.917 and 0.954). CONCLUSION: The measurement of the thermal pain threshold on myofascial trigger points in individuals with chronic neck pain has acceptable reliability values, supporting the use of the quantitative sensory testing in the research setting and the clinical environment.

Abstract Since the first reported case of COVID-19 in Brazil, the public and private educational system started to close. Up to November 2020, scientific discussions about the return of schooling activities have been rarely performed by the national scientific community and police-makers. The great delay of school returning in Brazil contrasts with successful international strategies of school reopening worldwide and seems counterintuitive with the reopening of non-essential activities. Here, important issues to be considered before and during school reopening are reviewed and discussed. COVID-19 testing is essential to avoid disease spreading, but high cost of individual RT-qPCRs impairs an extensive testing strategy for school returning. To reduce costs and increase the speed of diagnosis, we tested the efficiency of a pooled-sample PCR strategy in a cohort of the educational staff in the city of Macaé/RJ, finding five asymptomatic individuals (0,66%) among the 754 people tested. Thus, a polled-sample PCR testing strategy of the educational staff might prevent infection spreading in schools at a reasonable cost. We discuss how our test strategy could be coupled with internationally recognized safety rules to allow for a safe school return and how countries from different world regions are dealing with educational activities during COVID-19 pandemic.
