ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract It is known that several animals are sensitive to magnetic fields. Magnetoreception in animals is the ability to sense the geomagnetic field of the Earth and to use their vectorial properties for navigation and terrestrial location. Animals can also show magneto-sensitivity, unrelated to navigation and show changes in behavior during the application of magnetic fields. The aim of the present study was to analyze the behavior of the shrimp Litopennaeus vannamei under the presence of artificial magnetic fields of different intensities under laboratory conditions. Shrimps were chosen because of their economic importance and because they have been neglected in the study of magneto-sensitivity in animals. The laboratory experiments were performed with the use of a pair of circular coils and four aquariums (three treatments and a control, with 20 shrimps each). Our results show for the first time that L. vannamei shrimps are magneto-sensitive, showing a preference to swim against the magnetic field lines direction as is done by magnetotactic bacteria from the Southern Hemisphere. Also, it was observed that the shrimps remain still after the application of magnetic field intensities from 44 to 237 µT, which could be useful for maintaining shrimps in their captive areas. location magnetosensitivity, magnetosensitivity magneto sensitivity, sensitivity conditions three control 2 each. each . each) L magnetosensitive, magnetosensitive sensitive, magneto-sensitive Hemisphere Also 4 23 µT areas

Abstract The search for new therapeutic strategies for leishmaniasis treatment is essential due to the side effects of available drugs and the increasing incidence of resistance to them. Marine sponges use chemical compounds as a defense mechanism, and several of them present interesting pharmacological properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of the aqueous extract of the marine sponge Dercitus (Stoeba) latex against Leishmania amazonensis. MIC and toxicity against mammal cells were evaluated through broth microdilution assays. Transmission electron microscopy analysis was performed to assess possible effects on L. amazonensis ultrastructure. Arginase and proteolytic activities were measured by spectrometric methodologies. The extract of Dercitus (Stoeba) latex displayed antileishmanial activity and moderate toxicity against peritonial macrophages. Ultrastructural changes were observed after the growth of L. amazonensis promastigotes in the presence of the extract at 150 µg.ml-1 (IC50), mainly on acidocalcysomes. The extract was able to inhibit the activity of arginase and serine proteases. This study shows that Dercitus (Stoeba) latex aqueous extract may be a novel potential source of protozoa protease inhibitors and drugs that are less toxic to be used in the treatment of L. amazonensis infections.

Abstract Colonoscopy is the method of choice for diagnosis, and treatment of most colon diseases, being possibly the most effective tool in the prevention and timely detection of colorectal cancer (CRC), influencing its incidence and mortality. Efficacy and diagnostic and therapeutic quality depend on the ability of the endoscopist, percentage of colonic mucosa examined, the examination time, complications, among others. In such a way that even though there are indicators applicable to all colonoscopy, there are other specific ones for each indication. The Mexican Association of Gastroenterology (AMG) and the Mexican Association of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Professional College AC (AMEG) held a face-to-face meeting in June 2019, which was attended by gastroenterologists and endoscopists to review and evaluate the current evidence on the quality of CRC screening colonoscopy and develop recommendations that favor the performance of a high-quality colonoscopy.

Seed treatment using silicon in good quality seeds is a practice for increasing productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of coating rice seeds with two sources of silicon ontheir physiological, enzymatic and sanitary traits. This experiment used two rice cultivars, Irga 424 and Puitá Inta CL, and two sources of silicon, aluminum silicate and carbonized rice husk at doses of 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120g 100 kg-1 (of each applied product) of seed plus polymer and water, totaling a spray volume of 1L 100 kg-1 of seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications. The physiological quality of seeds was evaluated (LAS-FAEM \ UFPel) by germination, first count, length of shoot and root, cold test and field emergence. For isoenzyme differentiation, the following isoenzymes were analyzed: esterase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and peroxidase, for all treatments. The sanitary quality of seeds was evaluated using the filter paper method or "Blotter Test". Increasing doses of carbonized rice husk and aluminum silicate up to g 100 to 120 kg-1 seed incrementedrice seed vigor assessed by the root length and field emergence. The sources of carbonized rice husk and kaolin control the incidence of soil fungi in rice seeds.

Poor growth and intestinal parasitic infections are widespread in disadvantaged urban children. This cross-sectional study assessed factors influencing poor growth and intestinal parasites in 376 children aged three to six years in daycare centers in Salvador, in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Data was obtained from seven daycare centers on child weight, height, socio-economic status, health and intestinal parasites in stool samples. Prevalence of moderate underweight (< -1SD > -2SD), wasting and stunting was 12%, 16% and 6% respectively. Socioeconomic status, birth order, and maternal weight were predictors of poor anthropometric status. Almost 30% of children were infected with more than one intestinal parasite. Helminths (17.8%), notably Trichuris trichiura (12%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (10.5%), and protozoan Giardia duodenalis (13%) were the most common types of parasites detected. One percent of children had hookworm and Cryptosporidium sp. and 25% had non-pathogenic protozoan cysts. Boys from families with very low socio-economic status had lower linear growth and presented a greater risk of helminth infection. Deworming is considered an alternative for reducing the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in this age group.

Mauritia vinifera (buriti) is a palm tree that grows wild in different areas of Brazil, particularly in the Amazonian region. The buriti oil is rich in carotenoids, especially in β-carotene. The growing interest in other natural sources of β-carotene has stimulated the industrial use of buriti as a raw material for pulp oil extraction. Most processes are based on the conventional technologies, involving drying and pressing the pulp for oil recovery and further separation of carotenoids in a liquid phase using organics solvents. In the present work, the ethanol-based process was evaluated for simultaneous carotenoids recovering and fractionating from buriti pulp. The raw material and ethanol, 1:4 ratio, were placed in an erlenmeyer flask and maintained at 30rpm for 1 hour in a temperature-controlled bath at 65ºC. The mixture was filtered under vacuum and cooling at 10ºC to allow for the separation of the solvent in two phases. Carotenoids composition, determined by HPLC, has indicated a β-carotene concentration about 12 times greater in the lower phase than in the upper phase. The profile of the carotenoids in the denser phase is quite similar to that of raw buriti oil, and the concentration of total carotenoids is 40% higher than that of the original raw oil, making the ethanol-based process particularly attractive for industrial applications.

The use of ensiled sugarcane has been increased lately in Brazil due to the benefits that this technique represents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemical additives on the nutritive value of sugarcane silages. The trial was carried out in a completely randomized experimental design with four replicates per treatment. The following additives were applied onto the fresh forage before ensiling: L. buchneri, lime or limestone, 1.0 and 1.5% (wet basis) each, and gypsum 1.0% (wet basis), all of them diluted into 40 L of water per ton of fresh weight of forage. The analyzed variables were: ash, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and organic and dry matter digestibility. The addition of lime or limestone before ensiling produced silages with higher nutritive value compared to all other treatments, due to the increase of the ash content and dry matter and organic digestibility, and also by reducing the fiber content. The crude protein content range was similar to the values observed in the fresh forage. The treatments containing L. buchneri or gypsum were ineffective in improving the nutritive value of sugarcane silages and became similar to the control silages. Treatment containing lime or limestone improved the nutritive value of the sugarcane silage.

Despite the availability of alternative methods for drying tetrahydrofuran (THF), the use of the still apparatus, wherein a THF solution containing Na-bezophenone ketyl is heated to reflux, remains widespread. We herein propose a set of procedures to solve the problems usually faced in applying this drying technique. Moreover, a discussion is made on the chemical knowledge underlying such procedures. Safety and economy issues concerned with the operation of the THF still apparatus are also discussed.

In this work the effect of a new chemical surface treatment on the structure and surface morphology of loofah fibers (Luffa cylindrica) was analyzed, using infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The chemical treatment is aimed at increasing loofah compatibility with the polymeric matrices commonly used in composites. It was shown that the treatment used caused a reduction on the polarity of cellulose molecules, and removed the outer surface layer of loofah fibers, exposing their internal fibrillar structure. As a consequence the treatment promoted an increase on the surface area available to adhesion.
