Devido à anisotropia e complexidade do material, suas propriedades variam em função de suas características anatômicas intrínsecas e de fatores externos, como a espécie, teor de umidade, solicitações atuantes, dentre outros. A norma brasileira traz modelos lineares para a estimativa e correção de todas as propriedades de resistência e de rigidez em função do teor de umidade da madeira. Porém, devido às suas características, pode não haver variação linear das propriedades físicas e mecânicas em relação ao teor de umidade. Assim, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar e analisar a influência do teor de umidade em 15 propriedades da madeira Calophyllum sp. Foi avaliada a confiabilidade da equação da norma brasileira para corrigir os valores de resistência e rigidez em função da umidade (U% para 12%), além de analisar, por meio de ANOVA, se há alteração nas propriedades quando estão no ponto de saturação da fibra e 12% de umidade. ABSTRACT Due to its excellent resistance to traction and compression, wood is regularly used in furniture, window frames and in structures and sealing of homes and buildings. Due to the anisotropy and complexity of the material, its properties vary depending on its intrinsic anatomical characteristics and external factors, such as species, moisture content, acting requests, among others. Resumo O painel MDF pode sofrer mudanças dimensionais, o que compromete seu desempenho. Uma forma de melhorar o desempenho do painel é incorporar nanopartículas. A presente pesquisa estudou o efeito do uso de nanopartículas de óxido de zinco em diferentes teores (0%, 0,5% e 1,0%) em painéis MDF fabricados com resina ureia-formaldeído (UF), resina melamina-formaldeído (MF) e fibras de Eucalyptusgrandis. Também avaliou o uso de modelos de regressão para estimar propriedades físicas e mecânicas em função do adesivo utilizado e do teor de ZnO incorporado. Os tratamentos com resina MF apresentaram melhor desempenho quando comparados com os tratamentos que utilizaram adesivo UF. O teor ótimo para adição de nanopartículas foi o de 0,5%. O teor de 1,0% levou ao aumento no teor de umidade, ao inchamento e à diminuição dos valores de MOR e MOE, o que pode ser justificado pela cura acelerada e pelo superaquecimento das camadas externas, prejudicando a cura das camadas interiores. O modelo com maior precisão foi o estimador da densidade aparente, sendo os fatores resina, ZnO e interação significativos.

Abstract MDF panels can undergo dimensional changes, compromising their performance. One way to improve the performance of the panel is to incorporate nanoparticles. This study analysed the effect of using zinc oxide nanoparticles at different levels (0%, 0.5% and 1.0%) in MDF panels manufactured with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) and Eucalyptus grandis fibres. It also evaluated the use of regression models to estimate physical and mechanical properties as a function of the adhesive used and the content of incorporated ZnO. Treatments using MF resin presented a better performance than treatments using UF adhesive. The optimal content of nanoparticles addition was 0.5%. The 1.0% content led to an increase in moisture content, swelling and a decrease in MOR and MOE values, possibly caused by an accelerated curing and overheating of the outer layers, affecting the curing of the inner layers. The most accurate model was the bulk density estimator, with resin, ZnO and interaction factors being the most significant.

RESUMO O Brasil possui grande cobertura vegetal e o melhor aproveitamento desses materiais requer procedimentos de caracterização física e mecânica. Equações encontradas na literatura facilitam a determinação das propriedades da madeira. Nesse contexto, autores conhecidos desenvolveram a equação βl = βt/23, sendo βl e βt as porcentagens de retração longitudinal e tangencial, para estimativa de βl com base no valor de βl especialmente para espécies de madeira do hemisfério Norte. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a precisão desta equação para quinze espécies de madeiras tropicais brasileiras cobrindo toda a faixa de classes de resistência da madeira de lei de acordo com o Norma Brasileira ABNT NBR 7190. Os valores experimentais médios de βl e βt foram 7,71% (CV = 26,71 %) e 0,73% (CV = 38,76%), respectivamente. ABSTRACT Brazil owns a large vegetal covering and the best utilization of these materials requires physical and mechanical characterization procedures. Equations found in the literature make easier the wood properties determination. At this context, well known authors developed the equation βl = βt/23, being βl and βt the longitudinal and tangential shrinkage percentages, for βl estimation based on the βt value specially for wood species from the Northern hemisphere. This paper aims to investigate the accuracy of this equation for fifteen tropical Brazilian wood species covering the entire range of hardwood strength classes according to the Brazilian Normative ABNT NBR7190. The average experimental values of βl and βt were 7.71% (CV = 26,71%) and 0.73% (CV = 38,76%), respectively. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA refuted the hypothesis of equivalence between theoretical and experimental βl values (p-value = 0.0000). A linear regression model fitted to experimental values provided βl = βt/9,84 as optimal solution (p-value = 0.0000, R2 = 47,23%). RESUMO: O Brasil é o segundo maior país em área de florestas no mundo, o que torna propícia a exploração e uso de espécies variadas na construção civil. Um dos usos tradicionais da madeira se dá nos telhados das edificações para as mais diferentes finalidades. Tendo em vista que as patologias mais recorrentes nas estruturas de cobertura estão relacionadas às deformações excessivas verificadas nos elementos estruturais, principalmente nos sujeitos à flexão, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a efetiva representatividade do valor médio do módulo de elasticidade na compressão paralela estabelecido pela norma brasileira para madeiras da Classe C40. Foram considerados lotes de oito diferentes espécies de madeira tropicais, cujo enquadramento se deu na referida Classe. Os resultados obtidos dos intervalos de confiança para cada espécie avaliada possibilitaram concluir que o valor de 19500 MPa para o módulo de elasticidade não é representativo para a Classe C40, pois o valor encontrado nessa pesquisa foi 14467 MPa, resultado esse 26% inferior à referência normativa. Essa constatação é um indicativo inicial de que a adoção do valor de 19500 MPa pela norma é desfavorável à segurança da estrutura, justificando as patologias observadas no desempenho em serviço das estruturas de cobertura.

ABSTRACT: Brazil has the world’s second largest forest area, which makes the exploitation and use of varied species in civil construction conducive. One of the traditional uses of wood is to build roofs for different purposes. Considering that the most recurrent pathologies in the roof structures are related to the excessive deformations observed in the structural elements, particularly in those subjected to bending. This study verified the effective representativeness of the stiffness value established by the Brazilian Class wood standard, C40. Batches of eight different tropical wood species were considered, whose framing occurred in the referred Class. Results obtained from the confidence intervals for each evaluated species led to the conclusion that the value of 19500 MPa for the modulus of elasticity is not representative for Class C40 because the value observed in this study was 14467 MPa, which is 26% lower than the normative reference. This observation is an initial indication that the adoption of the value of 19500 MPa by the standard is unfavorable to the safety of the structure, justifying the pathologies observed in the service performance of the roof structures.

Resumo Para o dimensionamento correto de estruturas de madeira, as premissas da norma brasileira são de extrema valia como norte para os engenheiros estruturais, pois exibem valores padrão de resistência. Dessa forma, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar se o valor do módulo de elasticidade da classe C60 exibido na norma brasileira confere com os valores obtidos em ensaio de 23 espécies brasileiras, utilizando a metodologia Bootstrap com 1 milhão de simulações. Além disso, analisa-se, com modelos de regressão, se é possível estimar a propriedade de rigidez (E c0 ) dessas 23 espécies em função da densidade aparente. É possível concluir que a norma brasileira superestima o módulo de elasticidade das madeiras brasileiras, apresentado um valor quase 35% superior ao que realmente elas resistem, evidenciando que a norma necessita passar por revisão. Outro ponto é que os modelos de regressão não mostram significância, ou seja, com a densidade aparente não é possível estimar a propriedade de rigidez analisada.

Abstract For correct dimensioningof wood structures, the premises of the Brazilian standard are extremely valuable as a guide for structural engineers, as it exhibits standard values of resistance. Thus, this study aims to analyze whether the value of the class C60 elasticity module shown in the Brazilian standard matches the values obtained in the test of 23 Brazilian species, using the Bootstrap methodology with 1 million simulations. In addition, it sought to analyze, with regression models, whether it is possible to estimate this rigidity property (E c0 ) of these 23 species as a function of apparent density. Finally, it was possible to conclude that the Brazilian standard overestimates the modulus of elasticity of Brazilian woods, presenting a value almost 35% higher than what actually resists, showing that the standard needs to be revised. Another point was that the regression models do not show significance, in other words, with the apparent density it was not possible to estimate the analyzed rigidity property.

Resumo A madeira de mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King) é uma das mais valiosas encontradas no Continente Americano. Esse trabalho visou avaliar a produção de painéis de partículas de resíduos dos galhos e troncos dessa espécie. Foram avaliados a viabilidade de produção, as propriedades físicas e mecânicas e, além disso, foi realizada a comparação dos resultados com estudos similares e requisitos de normas. Os painéis foram fabricados a partir dos resíduos do tronco e dos galhos, de forma separada e misturados em diferentes proporções para testar sua influência no produto final. Foram aglomerados usando resina de poliuretano e prensados a 90°C e 3,5 MPa por 10 minutos. As amostras foram testadas para flexão estática, aderência interna, rigidez e inchamento (24 h), de acordo com as recomendações da NBR 14810. Os resultados indicaram que não houve correlação significativa entre a proporção tronco-galhos e os valores de módulo de elasticidade/ruptura. A produção dos painéis foi considerada viável e os resultados da maioria dos testes atenderam aos requisitos normativos.

Abstract Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is one of the most valuable wood species found in the American Continent. This study is an evaluation of the production of particleboards using wood residues from the branches and trunk of a mahogany tree. It was designed to test the feasibility of production and the mechanical and physical characteristics of the finished particleboards, as well as to compare the results with similar studies and the requirements of normative documents. The particles were generated from the trunk and branches of a mahogany tree separately and mixed in different proportions to test their influence on the final product. They were bonded using 12% polyurethane resin from renewable resources and pressed under 90º C and 3.5 MPa for 10 minutes. The specimens were prepared and tested according to the guidelines established by the NBR 14810 regarding the static bending, internal bond, stiffness and thickness swelling (24h) tests. The results indicated that there is no significant correlation between the trunk-branches proportion and the Modulus of Elasticity/Rupture values. The production of the particleboards using the residues is feasible and the results of most of the tests fitted the normative requirements, which means that with the refinement of the production process it is possible to have a good product that fully complies with the technical standards.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi criar um modelo teórico que permitisse com segurança e confiabilidade obter, valores de resistência e rigidez aos quais o elemento estrutural será submetido ao longo de sua vida útil. O efeito foi estudado para as propriedades de resistência e rigidez, e o módulo de elasticidade (E M ) e a resistência à flexão (f M ) no teste de flexão estática foram avaliados de acordo com o número crescente de ciclos do teste de fadiga para as cinco classes de madeiras duras, recomendado por norma NBR 7190. Uma redução nas propriedades de resistência e rigidez foi observada com o aumento dos ciclos de carregamento N aplicados em todas as frequências. A partir dos modelos de regressão multivariada e dos respectivos coeficientes de determinação, obteve-se um modelo genérico para o conjunto envolvendo as cinco espécies de madeira, enfatizando a inserção da densidade aparente como variável independente, o que permitiu uma maior generalização do uso dos ajustes no estimativa das propriedades E M e f M , apresentando coeficientes de determinação significativos, variando entre 69,89% e 70,58%.

Abstract The aim of present study was to create a theoretical model that allowed, with security and reliability, to obtain values of strength and stiffness to which the structural element will be submitted throughout its useful life. The effect was studied for strength and stiffness properties, and the modulus of elasticity (EM) and bending strength (fM) on static bending test were evaluated according to the increasing number of cycles of the fatigue test for the five classes of hardwoods, recommended by NBR 7190 Standard Code. A reduction in strength and stiffness properties was observed with increasing loading Ncycles applied at two frequency levels. From the multivariate regression models and the respective determination coefficients, a generic model was obtained for the set involving the five wood species, emphasizing the insertion of the apparent density as an independent variable, which allowed a greater generalization of the use of the adjustments in the estimation of the EM and fM properties, presenting significant determination coefficients, ranging between 67.89% and 70.58%.

Resumo O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi estabelecer uma correlação entre o envelhecimento natural com o envelhecimento artificial em painéis aglomerados de média densidade produzidos com resina de poliuretano de mamona e Pinus sp. Para tal correlação, foram utilizados os parâmetros climatológicos da cidade de São Carlos, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A correlação estabelecida foi que 20 ciclos seriam proporcionais à mesma degradação de dois meses de exposição ao envelhecimento natural. A relação entre as propriedades físicas e mecânicas com os efeitos proporcionados pelo número de meses (M) sobre o envelhecimento natural com número de ciclos (Nc) sobre o envelhecimento artificial foi obtida com modelos de regressão polinomial cúbica. Em geral, para propriedades físicas, 20 Nc representa de 7 a 8 meses e para propriedades mecânicas, de 11 a 12 meses, com exceção da tração perpendicular, de 8 meses de envelhecimento natural. As equações que melhor representam a relação entre Nc e M foram o inchamento em espessura às 2h e a absorção de água às 2h e 24h, com R² acima de 93%.

Abstract The main objective of this work was to establish a correlation between natural aging with artificial aging in medium density particleboards produced with polyurethane resin of castor oil and Pinus sp. For such correlation, climatological parameters at São Carlos city, São Paulo state Brazil were used. The established correlation was that 20 cycles would be proportional to the same degradation of two months of exposure under natural aging. The relation between physical and mechanical properties with the effects provided by number of months (M) on the natural aging with number of cycles (Nc) on the artificial aging was obtained with cubical polynomial regression models. In general, for physical properties, 20 Nc represents 7 to 8 months and for mechanical properties, 11 to 12 months, with exception to internal bonding, with 8 months of natural aging. The equations which best represent the relation between Nc and M were thickness swelling at 2h and water absorption at 2 h and 24 h, with R² above 93%.

Abstract In order to evaluate the influence of moisture content on wood physical and mechanical properties, the present research analyzed the influence of moisture content variation on Cedrella sp. on 12 strength and stiffness properties, considering 12% moisture content up to Fiber Saturation Point (FSP) were considered. Brazilian Standard consider a correction on wood properties obtained on moisture content different of 12%, reducing the properties. Eight properties from these twelve were significantly influenced by moisture content according to statistical analysis (5% significance level). ANOVA, Anderson Darling and Multiple Comparison tests were used at 5% significance level. Considering that most of properties were affected by moisture content, the equations to estimate wood properties according to moisture decrease are quite precise, but most of estimations were higher than the experimental values at 12% moisture content, indicating the need of a standard review for such estimators, which may lead to an unsafe timber structure design. For a conclusive consideration of moisture content variation influence on wood products, further researches with other tropical wood species are required.

RESUMO O Brasil possui um vasto território florestal que privilegia a disseminação de inúmeras espécies arbóreas. Para que uma espécie de madeira seja utilizada em um sistema estrutural, são necessárias uma série de caracterizações de suas propriedades físico-mecânicas. Neste contexto, uma das variáveis a ser estudada é o teor de umidade, cuja variabilidade pode interferir de forma significativa em suas propriedades. A norma brasileira vigente estabelece modelos de correção das resistências e rigidezes para a umidade de equilíbrio, admitindo um aumento linear inversamente proporcional ao teor de umidade. Todavia, em algumas espécies, este fenômeno pode não ocorrer, conduzindo a valores constantes ou mesmo menores. Portanto, esta pesquisa objetivou, com o auxílio da análise de variância, investigar a influência da variação do teor de umidade (de 12% ao ponto de saturação das fibras) em doze propriedades mecânicas da espécie Dipteryx odorata. Dentre tais, quatro não apresentaram variações significativas entre a umidade de 12% e o ponto de saturação, concluindo que a formulação normativa não abrange todas as propriedades, para todas as espécies. Ademais, verificou-se que os modelos de correção da norma conduzem a valores de resistência superiores àqueles obtidos experimentalmente, subestimando as estruturas e desfavorecendo a segurança.

ABSTRACT Brazil has a large forest territory that favors the incidence of numerous tree species. For a wood species to be used in a structural system, a series of characterizations of its physical-mechanical properties are necessary. In this context, one of the variables to be studied is the moisture content, whose variability can significantly interfere with its properties. The current Brazilian standard establishes models for correcting strength and stiffness for equilibrium moisture, admitting a linear increase inversely proportional to the moisture content. However, in some species, this phenomenon may not occur, leading to constant or even smaller values. Therefore, this research aimed, with the aid of analysis of variance, to investigate the influence of variation in moisture content (from 12% to fiber saturation point) on twelve mechanical properties of the species Dipteryx odorata. Among these, four did not show significant variations between 12% moisture and saturation point, concluding that the standard formulation does not cover all properties for all species. Furthermore, it was found that the standard correction models lead to strength values higher than those obtained experimentally, underestimating the structures and disfavoring safety.

ABSTRACT The present research intended to propose and evaluate regression models which estimate toughness property as a function of physical, chemical properties of thermally modified hardwood and thermal treatment temperature, using linear, quadratic, cubic, exponential, logarithmic, geometric and multiple linear models. RESUMO O recente interesse pela construção de estruturas altas e robustas em madeira tem estimulado a investigação de propriedades físicas e mecânicas, assim como a correlação delas com outros parâmetros importantes do material de espécies tropicais como o angelim-amargoso (Vatairea sp.) utilizada especialmente em estruturas de telhados de grandes vãos. No Brasil, a norma de projetos de madeira recomenda a utilização de modelos lineares para a correção ou estimativa da resistência e/ou rigidez da madeira correlacionada ao teor de umidade, bem como traz a classificação das folhosas segundo sua resistência característica. Entretanto, por ser um material natural, heterogêneo e anisotrópico, certas propriedades podem não ser afetadas por diferenças no teor de umidade. Portanto, nesse trabalho, investigou-se a influência do teor de umidade em 15 propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de Vatairea sp., através da sua caracterização. Os ensaios foram realizados em 12 corpos-de-prova para cada propriedade e para dois grupos: com teor de umidade de 12% e no ponto de saturação das fibras. O teste de Anderson-Darling foi empregado para verificar a normalidade dos resultados e a análise de variância (ANOVA) para analisar a influência do teor de umidade nessas propriedades. Além disso, classificou-se a madeira segundo as classes de resistência da norma brasileira e estimou-se a resistência e rigidez segundo os modelos lineares propostos pela mesma norma. Os resultados estimados foram comparados com os experimentais através do cálculo da diferença e o erro percentual dos valores. Concluiu-se que a maioria das propriedades não foram afetadas pelo teor de umidade e que os maiores erros obtidos nas estimativas foram para as propriedades que foram influenciadas significativamente pelo teor de umidade.

ABSTRACT The recent interest in constructing high and robust wooden structures has stimulated the investigation of physical and mechanical properties as well as their correlation with other important parameters of the material of tropical species like the Vatairea sp., whose popular name is angelim-amargoso, used especially in roof structures with large spans. The Brazilian Standard for wood constructions recommends using linear models to correct or estimate the strength and/or stiffness of wood correlated with moisture content and also provides the classification of hardwoods according to their characteristic strength. However, because wood is a natural, heterogeneous, and anisotropic material, certain properties may not be affected by significant differences in moisture content. Therefore, in this study, the influence of moisture content on fifteen physical and mechanical properties of Vatairea sp. wood was investigated through its characterization. The tests were carried out on 12 specimens for each property and two groups: with the moisture content of 12% and at the fiber saturation point. The Anderson-Darling test was performed to verify the results’ normality and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) to analyze the influence of moisture content on these properties. In addition, the wood was classified according to the strength classes of the Brazilian Standard, and the strength and stiffness were estimated according to the linear models proposed by the same norm. The estimated results were compared with the experimental ones through the difference calculation and percentual error of the values. It was concluded that most properties were not affected by the moisture content, and the most significant errors obtained in the estimates were for properties that were significantly influenced by the moisture content.

Dessa forma, esse estudo tem como objetivo analisar se o valor de resistência ao cisalhamento característico paralelo às fibras da classe C60 exibido na norma brasileira confere com os valores obtidos em ensaio de 23 espécies brasileiras, utilizando a metodologia Bootstrap com 1 milhão de simulações. Além disso, buscou analisar, com modelos de regressão, se é possível estimar a propriedade de resistência (fν0) dessas 23 espécies em função da densidade aparente, buscando assim uma obtenção rápida das propriedades dessas espécies com apenas a densidade aparente. Por final, foi possível concluir que a norma brasileira subestima a resistência ao cisalhamento das madeiras brasileiras, apresentado um valor 26% menor ao que realmente resiste, evidenciando que a norma necessita passar por revisão. Outro ponto foi que os modelos de regressão não mostram significância, ou seja, com a densidade aparente não foi possível estimar a propriedade de resistência.

ABSTRACT Wood is an excellent structural material, in addition to having excellent resistance in traction and compression. For correct dimensioning, the premises of the Brazilian standard are extremely valuable as a guide for structural engineers, as it exhibits standard values of resistance. Thus, this study aims to analyze whether the characteristic shear strength value parallel to class C60 fibers shown in the Brazilian standard matches the values obtained in the test of 23 Brazilian species, using the Bootstrap methodology with 1 million simulations. In addition, it sought to analyze, with regression models, whether it is possible to estimate the resistance property (fν0) of these 23 species as a function of apparent density, thus seeking to obtain quickly the properties of these species with only apparent density. Finally, it was possible to conclude that the Brazilian standard underestimates the shear strength of Brazilian woods, presenting a value 26% smaller to what actually resists, showing that the standard needs to be revised. Another point was that the regression models do not show significance, in other words, with the apparent density it was not possible to estimate the resistance property.

Abstract The present study aimed to characterize medium density particleboard manufactured with CCB treated particles of Pinus sp. wood specie and alternative mixed vegetal oil-base bicomponent polyurethane resin. For this, three different resin concentrations (10 %, 12 % and 15 %) were used in combination with the presence or absence of the CCB preservative, resulting in six distinct treatments. The particleboards were produced according the Brazilian Standard - NBR and evaluated according European standards - EN. The results met the requirements of NBR and EN. The technical feasibility of making panels with those materials used were proved and the quality of the product according to its performance were verified, indicating the possibility to use alternative bicomponent polyurethane resin from mix vegetal oil. Statistical analysis demonstrated that adhesive and preservative factors and the interaction between them were significant on physical and mechanical properties.

Abstract According to the Brazilian standard for wooden structures, strength and stiffness increase linearly with decreasing moisture; however, as wood is a natural, heterogeneous and anisotropic material, certain strength and stiffness properties may not be affected even by large differences in moisture. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the reliability of the resistance and rigidity transformation equations as a function of moisture, used to correct the properties when the test was not performed at 12% moisture. Furthermore, it was checked whether the humidity affects the properties of the studied species. Of the 15 properties analyzed, 2 did not show changes when analyzed at the fiber saturation point and at 12% moisture. Additionally, the correction equations of the Brazilian standard showed errors of up to 24% in the estimation of properties at 12% moisture. Thus, the need to correct the Brazilian standard for wooden structures is evident.
