The Effect of Soil Management on Pore Size Distribution and Water Infiltration

Abstract Water infiltration into soil varies significantly with soil type and management practices. Management practices alter soil physical properties, such as porosity and pore size distribution, which play an important role in infiltration. This study was conducted to assess the effect of the long-term use of two different soil tillage systems (conventional, CT, and no-tillage, NT) on soil structure and water infiltration to understanding of the relationship between physical conditions induced by tillage and water infiltration. The experiments were carried out on a Humic Cambisol in southern Brazil from 1995 to 2016. Soil density, porosity, aggregate diameter and soil water infiltration were evaluated under conventional tillage right after one plowing and two subsequent discings (CT0), and six months after these tillage operations (CT6). The results show that different management systems affect differently soil physical properties and, thus, water infiltration. By mechanical mobilization CT brings about modifications in soil structure which promote an increase in total porosity and mesopority, and a decrease in soil microporosity. This in turn results in an increase in the proportion of larger pores in the plow layer and a decrease in soil density, but also in a decrease in aggregate stability. The CT0 measurements showed the highest infiltration rates which were up to 15 times greater than in the NT treatment. The higher infiltration rate in CT0 wears off with time, but in the CT6 measurements six months after tillage it was still 2 times higher than under NT. Tillage, at least initially, increases total porosity and mesoporosity, while at the same time decreasing microporosity. This results in a larger saturated hydraulic conductivity (K). An increase in total porosity alone does not necessarily increase K, if there is an increase in small pores at the cost of decreasing the number of larger pores.

OBJECTIVES: To compare demographic/clinical/laboratory/treatments and outcomes among children and adolescents with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that included patients diagnosed with pediatric COVID-19 (aged <18 years) between April 11, 2020 and April 22, 2021. During this period, 102/5,951 (1.7%) of all admissions occurred in neonates, children, and adolescents. Furthermore, 3,962 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection samples were processed in patients aged <18 years, and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 occurred in 155 (4%) inpatients and outpatients. Six/155 pediatric patients were excluded from the study. Therefore, the final group included 149 children and adolescents (n=97 inpatients and 52 outpatients) with positive SARS-CoV-2 results. RESULTS: The frequencies of sore throat, anosmia, dysgeusia, headache, myalgia, nausea, lymphopenia, pre-existing chronic conditions, immunosuppressive conditions, and autoimmune diseases were significantly reduced in children and adolescents (p<0.05). Likewise, the frequencies of enoxaparin use (p=0.037), current immunosuppressant use (p=0.008), vasoactive agents (p=0.045), arterial hypotension (p<0.001), and shock (p=0.024) were significantly lower in children than in adolescents. Logistic regression analysis showed that adolescents with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 had increased odds ratios (ORs) for sore throat (OR 13.054; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.750-61.977; p=0.001), nausea (OR 8.875; 95% CI 1.660-47.446; p=0.011), and lymphopenia (OR 3.575; 95% CI 1.355-9.430; p=0.010), but also had less hospitalizations (OR 0.355; 95% CI 0.138-0.916; p=0.032). The additional logistic regression analysis on patients with preexisting chronic conditions (n=108) showed that death as an outcome was significantly associated with pediatric severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) (OR 22.300; 95% CI 2.341-212.421; p=0.007) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) (OR 11.261; 95% CI 1.189-106. 581; p=0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Half of the laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases occurred in adolescents. Individuals belonging to this age group had an acute systemic involvement of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Pediatric SARS and MIS-C were the most important factors associated with the mortality rate in pediatric chronic conditions with COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the outcomes of pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with or without multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 471 samples collected from 371 patients (age<18 years) suspected of having severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The study group comprised 66/371 (18%) laboratory-confirmed pediatric COVID-19 patients: 61 (92.5%) patients tested positive on real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction tests for SARS-CoV-2, and 5 (7.5%) patients tested positive on serological tests. MIS-C was diagnosed according to the criteria of the Center for Disease Control. RESULTS: MIS-C was diagnosed in 6/66 (9%) patients. The frequencies of diarrhea, vomiting, and/or abdominal pain (67% vs. 22%, p=0.034); pediatric SARS (67% vs. 13%, p=0.008); hypoxemia (83% vs. 23%, p=0.006); and arterial hypotension (50% vs. 3%, p=0.004) were significantly higher in patients with MIS-C than in those without MIS-C. The frequencies of C-reactive protein levels >50 mg/L (83% vs. 25%, p=0.008) and D-dimer levels >1000 ng/mL (100% vs. 40%, p=0.007) and the median D-dimer, troponin T, and ferritin levels (p<0.05) were significantly higher in patients with MIS-C. The frequencies of pediatric intensive care unit admission (100% vs. 60%, p=0.003), mechanical ventilation (83% vs. 7%, p<0.001), vasoactive agent use (83% vs. 3%, p<0.001), shock (83% vs. 5%, p<0.001), cardiac abnormalities (100% vs. 2%, p<0.001), and death (67% vs. 3%, p<0.001) were also significantly higher in patients with MIS-C. Similarly, the frequencies of oxygen therapy (100% vs. 33%, p=0.003), intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (67% vs. 2%, p<0.001), aspirin therapy (50% vs. 0%, p<0.001), and current acute renal replacement therapy (50% vs. 2%, p=0.002) were also significantly higher in patients with MIS-C. Logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of MIS-C was significantly associated with gastrointestinal manifestations [odds ratio (OR)=10.98; 95%CI (95% confidence interval)=1.20-100.86; p=0.034] and hypoxemia [OR=16.85; 95%CI=1.34-211.80; p=0.029]. Further univariate analysis showed a positive association between MIS-C and death [OR=58.00; 95%CI=6.39-526.79; p<0.0001]. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 with MIS-C had a severe clinical spectrum with a high mortality rate. Our study emphasizes the importance of investigating MIS-C in pediatric patients with COVID-19 presenting with gastrointestinal involvement and hypoxemia.

Soil physical indicators of management systems in traditional agricultural areas under manure application

ABSTRACT Studies of the successive application of manure as fertilizer and its combined effect with long-term soil management systems are important to the identification of the interdependence of physical attributes. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the physical properties of a Rhodic Kandiudox under management systems employing successive applications of pig slurry and poultry litter, and select physical indicators that distinguish these systems using canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). The systems consisting of treatments including land use, management and the application time of organic fertilizers are described as follows: silage maize under no-tillage (NT-M7 years); silage maize under conventional tillage (CT-M20 years); annual pasture with chisel plowing (CP-P3 years); annual pasture with chisel plowing (CP-P15 years); perennial pasture without tillage (NT-PP20 years); and no-tillage yerba mate (NT-YM20 years) and were compared with native forest (NF) and native pasture (NP). Soil samples were collected from the layers at the following depths: 0.0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.20 m, and were analyzed for bulk density, porosity, aggregation, flocculation, penetration resistance, water availability and total clay content. Canonical discriminant analysis was an important tool in the study of physical indicators of soil quality. Organic fertilization, along with soil management, influences soil structure and its porosity. Total porosity was the most important physical property in the distinction of areas with management systems and application times of manure for the 0.0-0.05 and 0.10-0.20 m layers. Soil aeration and micropores differentiated areas in the 0.05-0.10 m layer. Animal trampling and machinery traffic were the main factors inducing compaction of this clayey soil.

RESUMO A injeção de fontes de nitrogênio no solo e o uso de inibidor de nitrificação podem melhorar a eficiência do nitrogênio aplicado e minimizar perdas para o ambiente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do DLS e da ureia em dois modos de aplicação no solo (injetado e superficial), e o uso de inibidor de nitrificação sobre a volatilização de NH3 em ambiente controlado, com condições variadas de textura e pH do solo. O experimento foi conduzido em condições controladas, em um Nitossolo e um Argissolo, com delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 x 2 x 2 com três repetições. Avaliou-se quatro fertilizantes (ureia, dejeto líquido suíno, dejeto líquido suíno+inibidor de nitrificação (dicianodiamida-DCD) e testemunha), duas condições de pH (natural e corrigido), duas formas de aplicação dos fertilizantes (injetado e superficial), e dois solos. A dose de dejeto suíno foi de 21 m3 ha-1, e a do inibidor foi de 10 kg ha-1. As avaliações consistiram em mensuração da volatilização de amônia diária e acumulada até o 14º dia, e da porcentagem de N perdido em relação ao aplicado. A injeção reduziu as emissões de amônia em ambos os solos, e a correção do pH favoreceu as perdas de N por volatilização. O inibidor não aumentou a emissão acumulada de amônia em ambos os solos.
ABSTRACT The injection of nitrogen sources into the soil and use of nitrification inhibitor can improve the efficiency of applied nitrogen and minimize losses to the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of swine slurry (SS) and urea in two modes of application in the soil (injected and surface), and the use of nitrification inhibitor on NH3 volatilization in a controlled environment, upon varying soil texture and soil pH conditions. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions, or a Rhodic Kandiudox and Typic Hapludult soil in a completely randomized design in a 4 x 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design with three replications. The study evaluated four fertilizers (urea, SS, SS +nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide-DCD) and control), two pH conditions (natural and limed) and two forms of fertilizer application (injected and surface), and two soils. The SS rate used was 21 m3 ha-1, and the rate of the inhibitor was 10 kg ha-1. The evaluations consisted in daily accumulated ammonia volatilization up to 14 days, and the percentage of soil nitrogen loss. The injection of fertilizers reduced emissions of ammonia in both soils and, limed soil had higher N losses by volatilization. The inhibitor did not increase the emission of ammonia in both soils.

RESUMO: Aplicações sucessivas de dejeto líquido de suínos e cama de aviário podem melhorar a estrutura do solo conforme as condições de uso do solo e quantidades adicionadas. Neste estudo, avaliou-se o efeito da aplicação desses fertilizantes sobre os atributos físicos e teores de carbono orgânico de um Nitossolo Vermelho. Os tratamentos contemplam sistemas de uso e manejo do solo e tempo de aplicação de dejeto líquido de suínos e cama de aviário, a saber: mata nativa (MN), erva mate com 20 anos de aplicação de dejetos animais (EM20), pastagem com 15 anos de aplicação (P15), pastagem com 20 anos de aplicação (PP20), pastagem com 3 anos de aplicação (P3), pastagem sem aplicação (P0), milho com 20 anos de aplicação (M20) e milho com 7 anos de aplicação (M7). As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20cm, nas quais foram analisadas: densidade, porosidade, estabilidade de agregados, grau de floculação, resistência à penetração, água disponível, argila total e os teores de carbono orgânico total e particulado e relação C:N. O carbono orgânico total é sensível ao manejo e não teve relação com a adição de dejetos, exceto na camada de 10-20cm na pastagem de azevém 3 anos. A densidade do solo e a resistência à penetração foram as variáveis que tiveram relação com a adição de dejetos e sistemas de uso e manejo do solo.
ABSTRACT: Successive applications of pig slurry and poultry manure can improve the soil structure, according to the land use conditions and amounts applied. This study evaluated the effect of manure fertilization on the physical properties and organic carbon of a Rhodic Kandiudox. Treatments included land use and management and time of pig slurry and poultry litter application, namely: native forest (NF); yerba mate after 20 years of animal waste application (YM20); pasture after 15 years of application (P15); grassland after 20 years of manuring (PP20); grassland after 3 years of manuring (P3); pasture without application (P0), maize after 20 years of application (M20); and maize after 7 years of application (M7). Soil samples were collected in the 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20cm layers, in which density, porosity, aggregate stability, flocculation, penetration resistance, available water, and total clay content, total and particulate organic carbon, and C:N ratio were analyzed. The total organic carbon is sensitive to management and was not related to waste application, except in the 10-20cm layer of ryegrass pasture after three years of manuring. Reponses to waste application and land use and management systems were observed in the variables soil density and penetration resistance.

O uso de dejeto suíno (DS) como fertilizante pode interferir na qualidade do solo e aumentar os estoques de carbono orgânico total do solo (COT). Entretanto, os efeitos do DS na quantidade e formas de COT acumulados no solo não são totalmente conhecidos, em especial em áreas em sistema plantio direto (SPD). O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar os teores e estoques de COT e de C nas frações particulada (COP) e associada aos minerais (CAM) em Latossolo Vermelho cultivado com a sucessão milho e aveia-preta, sob SPD após nove anos com aplicações anuais de DS, de adubo solúvel e fertilização combinada (DS + adubo solúvel). O experimento foi iniciado em 2001, no município de Campos Novos, SC, e compreendeu os seguintes tratamentos: DS nas doses zero (sem adubação), 25, 50, 100 e 200 m3 ha-1 ano-1; adubação com adubo solúvel (AS); e adubação mista (25 m3 ha-1ano-1 de DS + AS). O teor de COT foi determinado em seis camadas de solo até a profundidade de 40 cm, enquanto os teores de COP e CAM foram determinados em quatro camadas até a profundidade de 20 cm. O teor e estoque de COT no solo aumentaram em razão da dose de DS aplicada nas camadas até 10 cm de profundidade, com doses a partir de 50 m3 ha-1ano-1. Os teores e estoques de COP e CAM foram maiores nas camadas superficiais, com expressiva predominância da segunda fração, porém com maior amplitude relativa nos teores da primeira fração.
The use of pig slurry (PS) as fertilizer can affect the soil quality and increase total stocks of soil organic carbon (TOC). However, the effects of PS on TOC amount and forms in the soil are not fully understood, particularly in areas under no-tillage (NT). The purpose of this study was to determine TOC contents and stocks in the particulate (POC) and mineral-associated C fractions (MAC) of an Oxisol after nine years of maize-oat rotation under NT, with annual applications of PS, soluble fertilizer and combined fertilization (pig slurry + soluble fertilizer). The experiment was initiated in 2001 in Campos Novos, Santa Catarina, with the following treatments: PS at rates of 0 (without fertilization - PS0); 25 (PS25); 50 (PS50); 100 (PS100); and 200 m3 ha-1yr-1 (PS200); fertilization with soluble fertilizer (SF); and mixed fertilization (PS + SF). The TOC content was determined in samples of six soil layers to a depth of 40 cm, and the POC and MAC contents in four layers to a depth of 20 cm. From the rate of 50 m3 ha-1yr-1 and upwards, the soil TOC content and stock increased according to the PS rates in the layers to a depth of 10 cm. The POC and MAC contents and stocks were higher in the surface layers, with a clear predominance of the second fraction, but a greater relative amplitude in the contents of the first fraction.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Objetivo. Describir el empleo del término andragogía en el contenido de las publicaciones en enfermería. Metodología. Estudio bibliográfico. Se hizo búsqueda en las bases de datos MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, EMBASE y ERIC de artículos publicados entre 1999 y 2011 que incluyeran el término 'andragogía'' o de alguno de sus derivados en el idioma inglés. Resultados. Se encontraron 51 publicaciones. Las principales categorías de estudio fueron: bases ideológicas y teóricas (71%), antecedentes históricos (37%), operacionalización de la andragogía (43%) y aplicación en Enfermería (86%). La educación permanente fue el tema tratado más frecuentemente (45%). Los Estados Unidos publicaron la mayor parte de los artículos (41%). En Brasil, el Invest Educ Enferm. 2013;31(1) . 87 uso de la andragogía es más reciente que en otros países. Los estudios indicaron que la andragogía tuvo una influencia positiva en la vida laboral de los alumnos. Conclusión. Aunque el empleo de la andragogía en la educación en Enfermería es poco frecuente, su uso en la formación de enfermeros muestra que es importante para el futuro desempeño profesional.
Objective. To describe the use of the term andragogy in the contents of nursing publications. Methodology. Bibliographic study. A search was undertaken in the databases MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, EMBASE and ERIC, for articles published between 1999 and 2011 which included the term 'andragogy' or derived terms in the English language. Results. 51 publications were found. The study's main categories were: ideological and theoretical bases (71%), historical antecedents (37%), andragogy's operationalization (43%) and application in Nursing (86%). The most-frequently treated issue was continuing education (45%). Most articles were published in the United States (41%). In Brazil, the use of andragogy is more recent than in other countries. The studies indicate that andragogy has a positive influence in the students' work lives. Conclusion. Although the use of andragogy in nursing education is less frequent, its use in nurse training shows it to be important for future professional performance.

Influence of Tunisian Ficus carica fruit variability in phenolic profiles and in vitro radical scavenging potential

Ficus carica L., Moraceae, is one of the first plants that were cultivated by humans, being the fruit an important crop worldwide for dry and fresh consumption. In this work, phenolics and antioxidant potential of dried fruits of seventeen Tunisian F. carica varieties, from green, red and black phenotypes, were assessed for the first time. HPLC-DAD analysis was performed. All samples presented a similar qualitative profile. The phenolics content ranged between 29.18 and 55.56 mg/kg (in black and red phenotypes, respectively) and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside was always the major compound. The antioxidant potential against DPPH•, superoxide and nitric oxide radicals of three varieties representing each phenotype was checked. All samples exhibited activity against the first two radicals in a concentration-dependent way, "Bayoudi" variety being the most effective one (IC25 values of 10.32 and 2.89 µg/ mL, respectively). Nevertheless, only "Hammouri" variety presented some capacity to scavenge nitric oxide radical. Our results reveal nice perspectives for these typical fruits, as they present an interesting phenolic composition and good antiradical activity and may encourage their consumption for health protection.

O impacto do uso de dejetos de suínos e cama de aves sobre o solo depende das condições de uso e das quantidades adicionadas. Neste estudo, avaliou-se o efeito da aplicação de fertilizantes orgânicos em diferentes áreas e tempos de aplicação sobre atributos físicos e teores de carbono orgânico de um Nitossolo Vermelho eutroférrico, em Concórdia, SC. Os tratamentos abrangeram diferentes usos do solo com aplicação de dejetos de suínos e cama de aves, a saber: milho para silagem (M7 anos), milho para silagem (M20 anos), pastagem de azevém (P3 anos), pastagem de azevém (P15anos), pastagem perene (PP20 anos), erva-mate (Mt20 anos), mata nativa (NF) e pastagem nativa sem aplicação de dejetos (P0 anos). As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm e analisadas em relação aos teores de carbono orgânico total e nitrogênio total e às propriedades físicas do solo, como densidade, porosidade, agregação, grau de floculação e resistência à penetração. Os sistemas agrícolas avaliados, mesmo recebendo aplicação de fertilizantes orgânicos, apresentaram menor teor de carbono orgânico em relação ao solo sob mata nativa. O uso de fertilizantes orgânicos e os sistemas de manejo adotados reduziram o grau de floculação das argilas e foi observada baixa macroporosidade em algumas áreas. Apesar disso, observaram-se boas condições físicas ligadas à estrutura do solo, como densidade do solo e resistência à penetração abaixo dos valores críticos e alta estabilidade de agregados, o que é importante para reduzir a erosão hídrica nessas áreas de cultivo associadas à criação de suínos e aves em regiões de relevo acidentado do oeste catarinense.
The impact of pig slurry and poultry litter fertilization on soils depends on the conditions of use and the amounts applied. This study evaluated the effect of organic fertilizers after different application periods in different areas on the physical properties and organic carbon contents of a Rhodic Kandiudox, in Concordia, Santa Catarina, in Southern Brazil. The treatments consisted of different land uses and periods of pig and poultry litter fertilization: silage maize (M7 years), silage maize (M20 years), annual ryegrass pasture (P3 years), annual ryegrass pasture (P15 years), perennial pasture (PP20 years), yerba mate tea (Mt20 years), native forest (NF), and native pasture without manure application (P0). The 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm soil layers were sampled and analyzed for total organic carbon, total nitrogen and soil physical properties such as density, porosity, aggregation, degree of flocculation, and penetration resistance. The organic carbon levels in the cultivated areas treated with organic fertilizer were even lower than in native forest soil. The organic fertilizers and studied management systems reduced the flocculation degree of the clay particles, and low macroporosity was observed in some areas. Despite these changes, a good soil physical structure was maintained, e.g., soil density and resistance to penetration were below the critical limits, whereas aggregate stability was high, which is important to reduce water erosion in these areas with rugged terrain in western Santa Catarina, used for pig and poultry farming.

MÉTODOS: Foram incluídas, neste estudo de coorte reconstituída, 152 mulheres com carcinoma de ovário, atendidas entre 1993 e 2008 e seguidas até 2010, nas quais o tipo histológico foi claramente estabelecido: 81 pacientes com carcinoma seroso e 71 pacientes com tumores não serosos (17 com carcinoma endometrioide, 44 com carcinoma mucinoso e 10 com carcinoma de células claras). Foram calculados os odds ratios (OR) brutos e os OR ajustados com os respectivos intervalos de confiança (IC95%) para as características clínicas e patológicas, comparando tumores serosos e não serosos. Foram calculados os Hazard Ratios (HR) com os respectivos IC95% em relação à sobrevida geral, para as variáveis clínicas e patológicas. RESULTADOS: Comparando os tipos seroso e não seroso, na análise univariada, os tumores serosos foram mais frequentes na pós-menopausa e eram preponderantemente carcinomas de alto grau histológico (G2 e G3), em estádios avançados, com CA125>250 U/mL e citologia peritoneal positiva. Após regressão múltipla, apenas o alto grau histológico se manteve associado com tumores serosos (OR ajustado 15,1; IC95% 2,9-77,9). Observamos 58 óbitos pela doença. O tipo histológico (seroso ou não seroso) não esteve associado com a sobrevida (HR 0,4; IC95% 0,1-1,1). Mulheres com idade de 50 anos ou menos (HR 0,4; IC95% 0,1-0,9) e aquelas que estavam em menacme (HR 0,3; IC95% 0,1-0,9) tiveram maior sobrevida quando comparadas, respectivamente, àquelas com idade acima de 50 anos e na menopausa. Carcinomas de alto grau histológico (G2 e G3) (p<0,01), estádio II a IV (p<0,008) e citologia peritoneal positiva (p<0,001) estiveram significativamente relacionados com pior prognóstico. O nível sérico de CA125 e a presença de ascite não se relacionaram com a sobrevida. A sobrevida foi menor quando a doença foi diagnosticada em estágios II a IV em comparação àquela das mulheres diagnosticadas no estádio I (log-rank p<0,01) independentemente do tipo histológico (seroso ou não seroso). CONCLUSÕES: A proporção de carcinomas de alto grau histológico (G2 ou G3) foi significativamente maior entre os carcinomas serosos comparados com não serosos. O tipo histológico seroso ou não seroso não esteve associado à sobrevida total.
PURPOSE: To compare the clinical-pathological features of women with serous and non-serous ovarian tumors and to identify the factors associated with survival. METHODS: In this reconstructed cohort study, 152 women with ovarian carcinoma, who attended medical consultations between 1993 and 2008 and who were followed-up until 2010 were included. The histological type was clearly established for all women: 81 serous carcinomas and 71 non-serous tumors (17 endometrioid, 44 mucinous and 10 clear cell carcinomas). The crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR), with the respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI), were calculated for the clinical and pathological features, comparing serous and non-serous histological types. The Hazard Ratios (HR) with 95%CI was calculated for overall survival, considering the clinical and pathological features. RESULTS: Comparison of serous to non-serous tumor types by univariate analysis revealed that serous tumors were more frequently found in postmenopausal women, and were predominantly high histological grade (G2 and G3), advanced stage, with CA125>250 U/mL, and with positive peritoneal cytology. After multivariate regression, the only association remaining was that of high histological grade with serous tumors (adjusted OR 15.1; 95%CI 2.9-77.9). We observed 58 deaths from the disease. There was no difference in overall survival between women with serous carcinoma and women with non-serous carcinoma (HR 0.4; 95%CI 0.1 - 1.1). It was observed that women aged 50 years or less (HR 0.4; 95%CI 0.1-0.9) and those who were in menacne (HR 0.3; 95%CI 0.1-0.9) had a longer survival compared respectively to those above 50 years of age and menopaused. High histological grade (G2 and G3) (p<0.01), stages II-IV (p<0.008) and positive cytology (p<0.001) were significantly associated with worse prognosis. CA125 and the presence of ascites did not correlate with survival. Survival was poor when the disease was diagnosed in stages II to IV and compared to stage I (log-rank p<0.01) regardless of histological type (serous and non-serous). CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of high histological grade (G2 and G3) was significantly higher among serous than non-serous carcinomas. Serous and non-serous histological types were not related to overall survival.

O manejo adequado do solo é uma das bases para a sustentabilidade do sistema agrícola. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar atributos químicos de um Cambissolo Húmico Alumínico após 12 anos em dois sistemas de preparo do solo, com rotação e sucessão de culturas. O experimento foi conduzido em Lages, SC, utilizando preparo convencional (PC) e semeadura direta (SD), sob rotação (r) e sucessão (s) de culturas. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. As sequências de cultivo foram: feijão-pousio-milho-pousio-soja-pousio no PCr; milho-pousio no PCs; feijão-aveia-milho-nabo-soja-ervilhaca na SDr; e milho-ervilhaca na SDs. As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas 0-2,5; 2,5-5; 5-10; e 10-20cm. Avaliou-se carbono orgânico total (COT), cálcio, magnésio, alumínio trocável, fósforo, potássio, nitrogênio total (NT) e pH em água. A SD aumentou os teores de COT e nutrientes em comparação ao PC, especialmente na camada superficial do solo. O cultivo de milho e ervilhaca em sucessão aumentou os teores de COT e NT na camada superficial do solo em comparação com a rotação sob semeadura direta.
Suitable soil management is one of the bases for sustainability in agricultural systems. The study aimed to evaluate chemical properties of a Humic Dystrudept for 12 years under two tillage systems, with crops rotation and succession. The experiment was carried out in Lages, SC, under conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT), with rotation (r) and succession (s) cropping systems, using crop sequences of beans-fallow-maize-fallow-soybean in CTr; maize-fallow in CTs; beans-oats-maize-fodder radish-soybean-vetch in NTr; and maize-vetch in NTs. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replicates. The soil samples were collected in the layers 0-2.5, 2.5-5, 5-10 and 10-20cm. The variables assessed were total organic carbon (TOC), calcium, magnesium, exchangeable aluminum, phosphorus, potassium, total nitrogen (TN) and water pH. The no-tillage system increased TOC and nutrient levels in comparison with conventional tillage, especially in the surface soil layer. Maize and vetch crop succession had higher TOC and TN contents in the surface soil layer compared to crop rotation under no-tillage.

Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt., Asteraceae, flowering tops infusion has been traditionally used in many countries to control hyperglycaemia. In this work we report for the first time fatty acids and volatile compounds in this species. Fifteen fatty acids and sixteen volatile compounds were determined by GC-ITMS, being saturated fatty acids and monoterpenes the main compounds. The antioxidant and antibacterial potential of this matrix was checked for the first time by several in vitro assays. A concentration-dependent activity was noticed against DPPH, nitric oxide and superoxide radicals. Antibacterial capacity was assessed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, being more effective against the first. Additionally, acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity was also evaluated, but no effect was found. Our results provide evidence of a wide diversity of compounds with several biological properties, improving the knowledge on this poorly studied matrix, which can lead to an increment of the use of C. tinctoria flowering tops, namely in food and pharmaceutical applications.

O solo é a base da cadeia produtiva de alimentos, por isso tornam-se necessárias a conservação e manutenção de sua capacidade produtiva. Muitas áreas exploradas de forma incorreta podem apresentar degradação física, química e biológica. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar alguns atributos físicos e suas relações com os teores de carbono orgânico de um Cambissolo Húmico alumínico nos sistemas de preparo convencional (PC) e semeadura direta (SD), após 12 anos com rotação (r) e sucessão (s) de culturas. O experimento foi conduzido em Lages - SC, situado a 27 º 49 ' de latitude sul e 50 º 20 ' de longitude oeste, com altitude média de 937 m. As sequências de cultivo foram: feijão-pousio-milho-pousio-soja no preparo convencional rotação; milho-pousio no preparo convencional sucessão; feijão-aveia-milho-nabo-soja-ervilhaca na semeadura direta rotação; e milho-ervilhaca na semeadura direta sucessão. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas 0-2,5, 2,5-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm. As variáveis avaliadas foram densidade do solo, porosidade, agregação, grau de floculação, retenção de água, infiltração, resistência mecânica à penetração e teor de carbono orgânico total. A semeadura direta apresentou melhor agregação do solo na camada surface (0-5 cm) em relação ao preparo convencional, o que está associado à maior microporosidade, teor de carbono orgânico total e retenção de água, não havendo necessidade de revolvimento do solo. A infiltração foi maior na semeadura direta com sucessão de culturas.
Soil is the basis underlying the food production chain and it is fundamental to improve and conserve its productive capacity. Imbalanced exploitation can degrade agricultural areas physical, chemical and biologically. The objective of this study was to evaluate some soil physical properties and their relation with organic carbon contents of a Humic Dystrudept under conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT), for 12 years in rotation (r) and succession (s) cropping systems. The experiment was carried out in Lages, SC (latitude 27 º 49 ' S and longitude 50 º 20 ' W, 937 m asl), using crop sequences of bean-fallow-maize-fallow-soybean in conventional tillage rotation; maize-fallow in conventional tillage succession; bean-oat-maize-turnip-soybean-vetch in no-tillage rotation; and maize-vetch in no-tillage succession. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications. The soil samples were collected in the layers 0-2.5, 2.5-5, 5-10, and 10-20 cm. The following properties were analyzed: soil density, porosity, aggregate stability, degree of flocculation, water retention, infiltration, mechanical strength, and total organic carbon. Soil aggregation in the surface layer (0-5 cm) was better in the no-tillage than the conventional system, related to higher microporosity, organic carbon contents and water retention capacity, indicating that a periodical tillage of this soil is unnecessary. Infiltration was highest in no-tillage with crop succession.
