Abstract Introduction: Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) are high-flow anomalous connections between the arterial and venous systems composed of dysplastic vessels resulting from aberrant angiogenesis. They are congenital and when symptomatic they rarely manifest before adolescence. Depending on the location, size, stage and severity of the symptoms, treatment options vary from conservative management to surgical resection. We report a case of a giant arteriovenous malformation of abdominal wall (tipe IIIb of Yakes Classification) treated with surgical resection after prior attempts of scleroembolization. Clinical case: 54-year-old woman with known history of osteoarticular pathology and dyspepsia presented a mass on the left side of the abdominal wall with hard consistency, warm, slightly pulsating and tenderness to touch with several years of evolution. The mass showed infiltration of the internal and external oblique muscles sparing the transverse muscle. Clinically she presented easy fatigue with efforts. Due to the risk of abdominal wall herniation after excision of the AVM, scleroembolization was considered first-line treatment in this case. This strategy resulted in regression of the mass and symptoms improvement. Four years after the last intervention, the patient presented lesion growth, recurrence and worsening of symptoms with severe interference in the quality of life (QoL). After multidisciplinary discussion, she was proposed for complete resection of the AVM. She was first submitted to scleroembolization with Onyx of identified arterial afferents and sclerosis of the lesion nidus with 2% polidocanol. One month after she underwent successfully total resection of the AVM with the collaboration of General Surgery. Conclusion: No unified agreement exists on the best treatment of these complex high flow lesions and it is difficult to establish a comprehensive strategy given the pathology’s clinical variability, complex stratification and the risk of relapse. A case-by-case approach is needed in managing these types of lesions.

Resumo O presente artigo trata dos principais desafios para o adequado funcionamento das audiências de custódia no Distrito Federal (DF). Adotou-se como metodologia a análise de conteúdo de publicações institucionais e acadêmicas sobre audiências de custódia no DF entre 2017 e 2022. Foram identificadas as seguintes categorias, representando os principais desafios das audiências de custódia no DF: (i) manutenção do uso de algemas nos custodiados durante a audiência; (ii) uso desmedido (e presumido) de medidas cautelares; (iii) violências no ato de prisão e durante a detenção; (iv) silenciamento do custodiado; e (v) o perfil dos custodiados. Conclui-se que, embora a própria existência e o funcionamento deste instituto processual fortaleçam o acesso à justiça das pessoas investigadas, bem como prevaleçam decisões pela liberdade provisória no DF, ainda assim existem obstáculos jurídicos, político-criminais e institucionais que desafiam a consecução dos objetivos das audiências de custódia. Abstract This article addressed the main challenges for the proper functioning of pre-trial detention hearings in the Federal District (DF). The methodology adopted was a content analysis of publications onl custody hearings in the Federal District between 2017 and 2022. The following categories were identified, representing the main challenges of pre-trial detention hearings in the Federal District: (i) maintaining the use of handcuffs during the hearing; (ii) the excessive (and presumed) use of precautionary measures; (iii) violence in the act of arrest and during detention; (iv) silencing of the custodian; and (v) the profile of the custodians. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To assess regional and national mortality and years of life lost (YLL) related to adverse drug events in Brazil. METHODS This is an ecological study in which death records from 2009 to 2018 from the Mortality Information System were analyzed. Codes from the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision (ICD-10) that indicated drugs as the cause of death were identified. The number of deaths and the YLL due to adverse drug events were obtained. Crude, age- and gender-specific, and age-adjusted mortality rates and YLL rates per 100,000 inhabitants were formed by year, age group, gender, and Brazilian Federative Unit. Rate ratios were calculated by comparing rates from 2009 to 2018. A joinpoint regression model was applied for temporal analysis. RESULTS For the selected ICD-10 codes, a total of 95,231 deaths and 2,843,413 YLL were recorded. Mortality rates from adverse drug events increased by a mean of 2.5% per year, and YLL rates increased by 3.7%. Increases in rates were observed in almost all age groups for both genders. Variations in rates were found between Federative Units, with the highest age-adjusted mortality and YLL rates occurring in the Distrito Federal. CONCLUSIONS The numbers and rates of deaths and YLL increased during the study period, and variations in rates of deaths and YLL were observed between Brazilian Federative Units. Information on multiple causes of death from death certificates can be useful for quantifying adverse drug events and analyzing them geographically, by age and by gender.

Abstract We hypothesized that the hCG modulates the expression of IFNT-pathway and ISGs in bovine endometrium during early pregnancy. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effect of hCG on IFNT-pathway signals and ISGs expression in endometrial cells. For this, 29 non-lactating cross-bread cows were used in the study and submitted to a 9-day fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocol. The day of the AI was considered Day 0 (D0), and five days (D5) after the FTAI, the cows were allocated into two groups: Control and hCG group, when a hCG group received a single dose of 2.500UI of hCG. On day 18 after FTAI (D18) cows were slaughtered and endometrial tissue samples were collected. There was no difference between the embryo recovery rate of the cows in C compared to the hCG. The hCG group increased the accessory corpus luteum formation rate. The hCG resulted in greater serum progesterone concentration in the hCG group compared to the C on Day 14. Only the expression of IFNAR2 and STAT1 were upregulated on pregnant cows of the hCG group compared to the C group. The pathway genes (JAK1, STAT2, and IRF9) were not regulated. The mRNA abundance of ISG15, MX1, MX2, and OAS1 was upregulated in pregnant cows for hCG group, compared to C group. The results show that the administration of hCG, 5 days after AI, in addition to increasing the serum progesterone, modulates the expression of IFNT-pathway and ISGs on bovine endometrium on Day 18 of pregnancy. Abstract Objectives The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and social distancing measures adopted worldwide raised questions about the possible health effects of human social isolation. Methods We conducted a systematic review on PubMed, Scopus, and Embase electronic databases using terms related to human social isolation – defined as the isolation of an individual from regular routines and usual social contact – and psychological stress, searching for simulated or naturalistic isolation environments. We present the main results, as well as the validity and limitations of each model. PROSPERO registry number: CRD42021241880. Results Despite the diversity of contexts reviewed, some outcomes almost ubiquitously relate to psychological stress, i.e., longer periods, expectation of a longer period, confinement, lack of social interaction, and support. Based on the results, and considering that most studies were not designed for the purpose of understanding isolation itself, we propose a group of recommendations for future experimental or naturalistic research on the topic. Conclusion Evidence on the impact of different situations in which individuals are subjected to social isolation can assist in development of directed preventive strategies to support people under similar circumstances. RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a sensação de dor e amplitude dos movimentos mandibulares de indivíduos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, antes e após aplicação da bandagem elástica por 24 horas. Método Trata-se de um ensaio clínico randomizado duplo-cego, do qual participaram 22 sujeitos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, alocados aleatoriamente em dois grupos, sendo grupo A composto por 10 mulheres e um homem (média de idade de 28,2±8,3 anos) e grupo B por nove mulheres e dois homens (média de idade de 26,2±3,9 anos). Todos os participantes foram submetidos à aplicação do Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Foi realizada a avaliação do limiar da dor, com uso de um algômetro, para aplicação da pressão no masseter e temporal e medição dos movimentos mandibulares, com paquímetro. O grupo A foi submetido à aplicação da bandagem sobre o músculo masseter com estiramento de 40% e o grupo B sem estiramento. A colagem da bandagem foi realizada, com corte em “I”, com ponto fixo sobre a inserção e ponto móvel sobre a origem do músculo masseter. Os participantes permaneceram com a bandagem por 24 horas e foram reavaliados. Resultados Houve alívio da dor no grupo A na articulação temporomandibular à direita e na origem do masseter à esquerda. O grupo B apresentou redução da dor em região de temporal anterior à esquerda. Não foram encontradas diferenças nos movimentos mandibulares após intervenção, bem como não houve diferença na comparação entre os grupos. Conclusão O uso da bandagem sobre o masseter, por 24 horas, com estiramento, produziu alívio da dor na origem do masseter direito e na região da articulação temporomandibular direita e, sem estiramento, no temporal anterior esquerdo. ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the sensation of pain and the range of mandibular movements of adult individuals with temporomandibular disorder, before and after the application of the athletic tape. Method This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial, in which 22 adults with temporomandibular disorder participated, randomly allocated into two groups, with group A comprising 10 women and one man (mean age 28.2±8.3 years) and group B comprising nine women and two men (mean age 26.2±3.9 years). Group A was submitted to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter with 40% stretch and the group B to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter without stretching. All participants underwent the application of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Pain threshold assessment was performed using an algometer to apply pressure to measurement points. The measurement of mandibular movements was performed using a caliper. The athletic tape was glued using the I technique, with a fixed point over the insertion and a movable point over the origin of the masseter muscle. Participants remained with the athletic tape for 24 hours and were re-evaluated. Results There was pain relief in the group A in the temporomandibular joint on the right and at the origin of the masseter on the left. The group B showed a reduction in pain in the left anterior temporal region. No differences were found in mandibular movements after intervention, as well as no difference was found in the comparison by groups. Conclusion The use of the athletic tape over the masseter muscle, with stretching, for 24 hours produced relief from the sensation of pain, on the origin of the right masseter and in the right temporomandibular joint, and, without stretching, in the left anterior temporal muscle. Resumo O aumento da modificação dos habitats e da perda de espécies demanda esforços consistentes para descrever e compreender os padrões de biodiversidade. O programa BIOTA/FAPESP foi criado nesse contexto e é uma iniciativa de sucesso para promover estudos em biodiversidade e conservação no Brasil. O BIOTA/Araçá é um projeto interdisciplinar que promoveu uma avaliação detalhada da biodiversidade da Baía do Araçá, um ecossistema costeiro localizado ao Norte do estado de São Paulo, Sudeste do Brasil. A baía engloba múltiplos habitats, tais como praias, manguezais, costões rochosos, e uma planície de maré, e também fornece importantes serviços ecossistêmicos. Infelizmente, a baía está sujeita à conflitos sócio-ambientais complexos que contrastam demandas econômicas, sociais e ambientais (i.e. a expansão das atividades do porto vizinho vs. a pesca artesanal de pequena escala e a proteção da biodiversidade). O presente estudo apresenta um levantamento das espécies bentônicas que ocorrem nos diferentes habitats da Baía do Araçá, incluindo dados obtidos durante o projeto BIOTA/Araçá e de investigações realizadas anteriormente na área. As espécies bentônicas desempenham um papel importante no ambiente marinho, e estudar a diversidade desses organismos que vivem associados ao fundo é indispensável para compreender o funcionamento do meio ambiente. A macrofauna, meiofauna, e microorganismos associados aos fundos consolidado e inconsolidado foram listados, e informações adicionais foram fornecidas para cada espécie, tais como a distribuição geográfica e nos habitats. Abstract Increasing habitat modification and species loss demand consistent efforts to describe and understand biodiversity patterns. The BIOTA/FAPESP Program was created in this context and it has been a successful initiative to promote studies on biodiversity and conservation in Brazil. The BIOTA/Araçá is an interdisciplinary project that provided a detailed evaluation of the biodiversity of Araçá Bay, a coastal seascape located on the North coast of the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil. The bay encompasses multiple habitats, such as beaches, mangroves, rocky shores, and a tidal flat, and provides important ecosystem services. Unfortunately, the bay is the subject of complex social-environmental conflicts that oppose economic, social, and environmental demands (i.e., the expansion of neighboring harbor activities vs. small-scale artisanal fisheries and protection of biodiversity). The present study presents a survey of the benthic species occurring in the different habitats of Araçá Bay, including data obtained during the BIOTA/Araçá project and previous assessments of the area. The benthic species play an important role in marine environments and studying the diversity of these organisms that live associated with the bottom is indispensable for comprehending the environment’s functioning. The macrofauna, meiofauna, and microorganisms associated with soft and hard bottom were listed, and additional information, such as the habitat and geographical distribution, were provided for each species. The checklist includes 826 species, almost 70% recorded during the BIOTA/Araçá project. The most speciose taxa were the annelids (225 spp.), mollusks (194 spp.), and crustaceans (177 spp.). Seven benthic species are endemic to Araçá Bay, 14 are considered threatened, and seven are economically exploited. Furthermore, the bay is the type locality of many taxa, and 11 new benthic species were described based on specimens sampled during the project. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre balanço energético e concentração sanguínea de alguns metabólitos relevantes durante o início da lactação em vacas leiteiras primíparas com diferentes desempenhos reprodutivos. Vinte vacas leiteiras holandesas primíparas foram agrupadas de acordo com o intervalo parto-concepção em precoce (<100 dias), intermediário (100 - 150 dias) e tardio (> 150 dias); e foram avaliados no dia -7 pré-parto, e nos dias 28, 56 e 90 dias pós-parto. Todos os grupos apresentaram balanço energético positivo, concentrações séricas de HDL, N-uréia e progesterona sem diferença nos dias 28 e 56 de lactação. Aos 90 dias de lactação todas vacas apresentaram o balanço energético negativo, porém o grupo de vacas precoce foi menos intenso (P < 0.05) (-1.09 versus -2.15 e -1.86 Mcal/dia), menor concentração sérica de N-uréia (3.28 versus 4.22 e 4.88 mg/dL) e colesterol-HDL (0.84 versus 1.59 e 1.46 mmol/L) e maior concentração sérica de progesterona (8.13 versus 4.54 e 1.83 ng/mL), que vacas dos grupos intermediário e tardio, respectivamente. Em conclusão, diferente do observado usualmente em vacas multíparas, o balanço energético durante as primeiras semanas de lactação não foi um fator determinante do intervalo parto concepção das vacas primíparas do presente estudo. De fato, a condição nutricional e as concentrações séricas de N-ureia e progesterona após 56 dias de lactação sugere ter impacto no atraso da concepção destas vacas. ABSTRACT: This study identified the relationship between energy balance and some blood metabolites in primiparous dairy cows with different calving conception interval. Twenty primiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were grouped according to the interval (days) from calving to conception into early-conception (early-c; <100 days), mid-conception group (mid-c; 100 - 150 days) or late-conception (late-c; >150 days) group; and evaluated on day -7 prior to parturition, and days 28, 56 and 90 postpartum. All groups presented positive energy balance, serum concentrations of HDL, urea-N and progesterone with no difference on days 28 and 56 of lactation. On day 90 of lactation all the cows presented negative energy balance; however, the early-c group presented a less intense (P < 0.05) net energy balance (-1.09 versus -2.15 and -1.86 Mcal/day), lower concentrations of serum urea-N (3.28 versus 4.22 and 4.88 mg/dL) and HDL cholesterol (0.84 versus 1.59 and 1.46 mmol/L) and greater serum concentration of progesterone (8.13 versus 4.54 and 1.83 ng/mL) than cows of mid-c and late-c groups, respectively. In conclusion, different from those usually observed for multiparous dairy cows, the energy balance during the first weeks of lactation was not a determining factor affecting the calving conception interval of primiparous dairy cows in the present study. Instead, the nutritional status and the serum concentration of urea-N and progesterone at a later stage, after 56 days of lactation, suggest having a role in delaying these cows’ pregnant status. ABSTRACT Objective: Gastric adenocarcinoma remains an aggressive disease with a poor prognosis, as evidenced by a 5-year survival rate of approximately 31%. The histological classifications already proposed do not accurately reflect the high biological heterogeneity of this neoplasm, particularly in diverse populations, and new classification systems using genetic markers have recently been proposed. Following these newly proposed models, we aimed to assess the cluster distribution in a Brazilian cohort. Furthermore, we evaluated whether the inclusion of other clinical and histological parameters could enhance the predictive value. Methods: We used a previously described four-immunohistochemistry/EBER-ISH marker to classify a cohort of 30 Brazilian patients with gastric adenocarcinoma into five different clusters and compared the distribution with other genetically diverse populations. Furthermore, we used artificial intelligence methods to evaluate whether other clinical and pathological parameters could improve the results of the methodology. Results: Disclosing the genetic variability between populations, we observed a more balanced distribution of the aberrant/normal p53 ratio (0.6) between patients negative for the other markers tested, unlike previous studies with Asian and North American populations. In addition, decision tree analysis reinforced the efficiency of these new classifications, as the stratification accuracy was not altered with or without additional data. Conclusion: Our study underscores the importance of local research in characterizing diverse populations and highlights the complementary role of molecular biomarkers in personalized medicine for gastric adenocarcinoma, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and potentially improving survival rates. Abstract This article provides the first records of courtship behavior and a mating event of free-ranging whitespotted eagle rays ( Aetobatus narinari ) in Brazilian waters. These observations shed light on utilizing the marine no-take zone surrounding the Anchieta Island State Park as a mating site in the South Atlantic region. Sightings of the species in shallower areas notably increased throughout summer months (from January to March, 2023 and from January to February, 2024), which aligns with its known reproductive period. Specifically, the mating event occurred in March 2023, followed by observations of courtship behavior in January 2024. While the population dynamics and impact of fisheries remain poorly understood, the species is frequently captured by traditional fishing fleets and traded locally. Method: A methodological study, carried out in June 2023 in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. RESUMO: A dessecação interrompe a aquisição da qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja, que atinge seu máximo em R9. Contudo, isto pode ser mitigado pelo estádio de aplicação e o herbicida utilizado. Objetivou-se caracterizar a aquisição da qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja de plantas dessecadas por herbicidas em estádios distintos. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3X6, sendo três estádios fenológicos (R6, R7.1, R7.3) e seis aplicações de dessecantes (Diquat 1,5 L.ha-1; Glufosinato 1,5 L.ha-1 e 2 L.ha-1; Diquat 1,0 L.ha-1 + Glufosinato 1,0 L.ha-1; Saflufenacil 140 g.ha-1 + Glufosinato 1,0 L.ha-1; e Saflufenacil 140 g.ha-1 + Diquat 1,0 L.ha-1), com quatro repetições. Avaliaram-se: taxa de dessecação, germinação, tolerância à dessecação (DT), longevidade (P50), viabilidade após um ano de armazenamento e peso de mil sementes. A aquisição da germinação e DT de sementes de plantas dessecadas por Diquat, Diquat+Glufosinato, Saflufenacil+Diquat e Saflufenacil+Glufosinato ocorre quando a aplicação é feita em R6, e para Glufosinato, em R7.1. O uso de de Diquat + Glufosinato e a combinação destes com Saflufenacil apresentou menor impacto na aquisição da longevidade de sementes de soja, sendo maior quando aplicados em R7.3. ABSTRACT: Desiccation interrupts the acquisition of physiological quality in soybean seeds, as this quality peaks at R9. However, this interruption can be mitigated by the stage in which herbicide is applied and which herbicide is used. The aim of this study was to characterize the acquisition of physiological quality in soybean seeds from plants desiccated by herbicides at different stages. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 3×6 factorial arrangement, consisting of three phenological stages (R6, R7.1, R7.3) and six different desiccant treatments (Diquat 1.5 L.ha-1; Glufosinate 1.5 L.ha-1 and 2.0 L.ha-1; Diquat 1.0 L.ha-1 + Glufosinate 1.0 L.ha-1; Saflufenacil 140 g.ha1 + Glufosinate 1.0 L.ha-1; and Saflufenacil 140 g.ha-1 + Diquat 1.0 L.ha-1), with four replications. The following evaluations were made: desiccation rate, germination, desiccation tolerance (DT), longevity (P50), viability after one year of storage, and thousand seed weight. Seeds are able to germinate and have DT when plant desiccation through application of Diquat, Diquat + Glufosinate, Saflufenacil + Diquat, and Saflufenacil + Glufosinate occurs at R6, and for Glufosinate, at R7.1. The use of Diquat + Glufosinate and their combination with Saflufenacil showed less impact on acquisition of soybean seed longevity, which was better when application was made at R7.3.
