We report a facile hydrothermal method for the synthesis of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) under two different temperatures, 120 °C (Nb2O5-120) and 150 °C (Nb2O5-150). The obtained materials were characterized by structural, optical and morphological techniques. Also, the photocatalytic properties of the Nb2O5 samples were evaluated in two reactions under ultraviolet (UVC) irradiation: degradation of methylene blue (MB) and indigo carmine (IC) dyes; and esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) present in waste cooking oil (WCO). The Nb2O5 was formed at different temperatures of synthesis, and the increase in temperature did not cause significant changes in the structural and optical characteristics, but resulted in an increased surface area of the synthesized materials. Both synthesized materials showed excellent efficiency for dye photodegradation. The sample Nb2O5-150 presented the best performance for the MB photodegradation, with almost 85% of the removal efficiency. In this case, the adsorption of MB molecules on the surface of the material was high due to the favorable electrostatic interaction and also because of its high surface area. For the IC photodegradation, the adsorption was insignificant, and both samples presented approximately 100% of the removal efficiency. Gender equity still needs to be fostered in society, and education can help change this scenario. This research aimed to investigate the impact of a didactic sequence involving inquiry-based science education and actions aimed at gender equity and deconstructing stereotypes in promoting more equitable participation among adolescent girls and boys. This is an action research in an extension activity, which analysed evaluative data from video recordings and questionnaires. The analysis involved immersion in the data, its categorisation and coding, and the determination of counting rules. The results indicate that inquiry based science education and jointly planned actions can help avoid sexist examples, foster examples of women's participation in Science, and enable equal participation between girls and boys, enabling them to interact and engage equally. Among the challenges identified, we have the greater difficulty in stimulating argumentation and explanation from both girls and boys and stimulating verbal participation from students who are not very participative.

La equidad de género sigue siendo un tema pendiente de fomentar en la sociedad y la educación puede contribuir a cambiar este escenario. Esta investigación se propuso investigar el impacto de una secuencia didáctica que incluía educación científica basada en la indagación y acciones dirigidas a la equidad de género y a la deconstrucción de estereotipos en la promoción de una participación más equitativa entre las niñas y los niños adolescentes. Se trata de una investigación-acción en una actividad de extensión, que analizó datos evaluativos de grabaciones de vídeo y cuestionarios. El análisis implicó la inmersión en los datos, su categorización y codificación, y la determinación de reglas de conteo. Los resultados indican que la educación científica basada en la indagación y las acciones planificadas conjuntamente pueden ayudar a evitar ejemplos sexistas, fomentar ejemplos de participación de mujeres en la Ciencia y permitir la participación igualitaria entre niñas y niños, permitiéndoles interactuar y participar en igualdad de condiciones. Entre los retos identificados, tenemos la mayor dificultad para estimular la argumentación y la explicación tanto de las niñas como de los niños y estimular la participación verbal de los/as estudiantes poco participativos/as.

ABSTRACT Bartonella spp. are bacteria responsible for neglected diseases worldwide. Bartonella henselae is the species most associated with human infections. It is associated with a large spectrum of clinical manifestations and is potentially fatal. The identification of Bartonella spp. is considered a challenge in clinical routine. These bacteria are fastidious, and the time required to isolate them varies from one to six weeks. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry has emerged as an application for research on Bartonella spp. , and has still been little explored. ABSTRACT In Brazil, the COVID-19 burden was substantial, and risk factors associated with higher in-hospital mortality rates have been extensively studied. However, information on short-term all-cause mortality and the factors associated with death in patients who survived the hospitalization period of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection is limited. We analyzed the six-month post-hospitalization mortality rate and possible risk factors of COVID-19 patients in a single center in Brazil. This is a retrospective cohort study focused on a six-month follow-up. The exclusion criteria were death during hospitalization, transference to another hospital, and age under 18. We collected data from the charts of all hospitalized patients from March 2020 to December 2020 with a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2, resulting in a sample size of 106 patients. The main outcome was death after hospitalization, whereas comorbidities and demographics were evaluated as risk factors. The crude post-hospitalization death rate was 16%. The first 30 days of follow-up had the highest mortality rate. In a Cox regression model for post-hospitalization mortality, previous chronic kidney disease (HR, 4.06, 95%CI 1.46 – 11.30) and longer hospital stay (HR 1.01, 95%CI 1.00 – 1.02) were the only factors statistically associated with death. In conclusion, a high six-month all-cause mortality was observed. Within the six-month follow-up, a higher risk of death was observed for patients who had prior CKD and longer hospital stay. These findings highlight the importance of more intensive medical surveillance during this period. Abstract This article presents the incorporation of information and communication technologies on the teaching-learning process of geotechnical engineering to improve the quality of education and provide practical knowledge to civil engineering students. The content of this paper is divided into three main modules, which are: Treatment of laboratory tests results, Slope stability and Rock mass stability. For this, some software were used, including 2D limit equilibrium stability analysis, stability analysis of rock wedges and a dynamic mathematics, to obtain and analyze soil shear strength parameters, among others. Furthermore, a digital tool was developed to analyze the results gathered in compaction, one-dimensional consolidation, and direct soil shear tests, in order to clarify the relationship between theoretical concepts and practical results of the tests and analyses and to help students on doubts, in addition to increase their interest and motivation to perform the complete interpretation of the collected data. The activities were conducted in classes of geotechnical disciplines of the undergraduate course in Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa, aiming to promote active learning and improve teaching quality. ABSTRACT Brazil has made notable advances in soil mapping compared to other Latin American countries, driven by collaborative efforts from federal agencies, research institutions, and universities. However, detailed soil maps remain limited, particularly at local scales. This study explored soil spatial variability in a coffee plantation located in the Brazilian Cerrado, assessing the effectiveness of integrating proximal and remote sensing data to create detailed soil maps that support precision agriculture. Soil samples were collected from multiple depths across the study area and analyzed for texture, fertility, and elemental composition using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF). Additionally, terrain attributes derived from a digital elevation model were examined to understand their relationship with soil properties. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the association of TSH, free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4), and conversion (FT3:FT4) ratio values with incident hypertension. Materials and methods: The study included data from participants of the ELSA-Brasil study without baseline hypertension. Serum TSH, FT4 and FT3 levels, and FT3:FT4 ratio values were assessed at baseline, and incident hypertension (defined by blood pressure levels ≥ 140/90 mmHg) was estimated over a median of 8.2 years of follow-up. The risk of incident hypertension was evaluated considering a 1-unit increase in TSH, FT4, FT3, and conversion ratio values and after dividing these variables into quintiles for further analysis using Poisson regression with robust variance. The results are presented as relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) before and after adjustment for multiple variables. Results: The primary analysis incorporated data from 5,915 euthyroid individuals, and the secondary analysis combined data from all euthyroid individuals, 587 individuals with subclinical hypothyroidism, and 31 individuals with subclinical hyperthyroidism. The rate of incident hypertension was 28% (95% CI: 27%-29.3%). The FT4 levels in the first quintile (0.18-1.06 ng/dL) were significantly associated with incident hypertension (RR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01-1.06) at follow-up. The association between FT4 levels in the first quintile and incident hypertension was also observed in the analysis of combined data from euthyroid individuals and participants with subclinical thyroid dysfunction (RR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.07). ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Embolization is a promising treatment strategy for cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). However, consensus regarding the main complications or long-term outcomes of embolization in AVMs remains lacking. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the most prevalent complications and long-term outcomes in patients with AVM undergoing therapeutic embolization. DESIGN AND SETTING: This systematic review was conducted at the Federal University of Alagoas, Arapiraca, Brazil. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria. Data were obtained from MEDLINE, PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO databases, which included the epidemiological profile of the population, characteristics of the proposed therapy, complications (hemorrhagic events and neurological deficits), and long-term outcomes (modified Rankin scale pre- and post-treatment, AVM recanalization, complete obliteration, and deaths). RESULTS: Overall, the analysis included 34 articles (2,799 patients). Grade III Spetzler–Martin AVMs were observed in 34.2% of cases. Notably, 39.3% of patients underwent embolization combined with radiosurgery. The most frequently reported long-term complication was hemorrhage, which occurred in 8.7% of patients at a mean follow-up period of 58.6 months. Further, 6.3% of patients exhibited neurological deficits after an average of 34.7 months. Complete obliteration was achieved in 51.4% of the cases after a mean period of 36 months. Recanalization of AVMs was observed in 3.5% of patients. Long-term death occurred in 4.0% of patients. CONCLUSION: Embolization of AVMs is an increasingly safe strategy with low long-term complications and satisfactory outcomes, especially in patients who have undergone combination therapies. Abstract Background During aging, physiological and behavioral changes occur that lead to the development of diabesity (diabetes + obesity). Hence, the hypothesis that behavioral and health aspects can increase the probability of this outcome is plausible. In this framework, it is essential to carry out health surveys to investigate the factors that increase the probability of diabesity, as this information could be used to help monitor this outcome in the older population more accurately. Objective To verify the factors associated with diabesity in older adults. Methods This is an epidemiological survey, with a cross-sectional design, conducted with 211 older adults (58.80% women) from Aiquara, Bahia, Brazil. To assess the outcome, body mass index (BMI > 27 kg/m2) and the concomitant presence of diabetes mellitus were used. In the inferential analyses, crude models and, subsequently, a multiple hierarchical explanatory model were constructed (level 1: socioeconomic variables; level 2: behavioral aspects; level 3: health conditions). This was performed using Poisson regression, with a robust estimator, calculations of prevalence ratios (PR) and their relevant 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results The prevalence of diabesity observed was around 9.50%. ABSTRACT The magnetic torquer rod, also called a magnetorquer, is the most popular actuator for attitude control of satellites in low Earth orbit. In the case of nano and picosatellites, the available inner space is quite limited, as is the maximum power value. An optimal design solution is highly desirable to produce adequate torque while minimizing energy consumption and mass. Based on the axiomatic design theory, a solution was developed by establishing the requirements – wire diameter, magnetic dipole moment, voltage, and solenoid length – and the physical domain variables – number of turns, current, resistance, and wire length. As a result of the modelling, the design system is decoupled. The choice of core material can also contribute to the actuator’s improvement. Two options are proposed in this work: the FINEMET, a nanocrystal composed of various metals and other elements, and the FeNi50 alloy, for comparative performance. To assess solubility, the root canals of acrylic teeth (N = 10) were filled with the previously mentioned pastes and scanned by using micro–computed tomography before (initial) and after 7 days of immersion in ultrapure water. The solubility of each specimen was the difference between the initial and final volume. Flow properties were analysed according to the ISO 6876/2012 standard. Radiopacity was radiographically analysed by using Image J software. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey’s test (alpha 5%). Results CH/ZnO/CHX and Calplus presented similar values regarding radiopacity. The group composed of Calen paste showed higher flow values. As for solubility, CH/ZnO/CHX showed lower volume loss, but there was no statistical difference compared to other medications. Conclusion The medication composed of calcium hydroxide, zinc oxide and 2% chlorhexidine is a suitable alternative for use in traumatized teeth. ABSTRACT The patient was referred to the Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo for resection of the lesion by a head and neck surgeon. Resection was performed in January 2008 and the final diagnosis was low-grade osteoblastic osteosarcoma. He was referred to the prosthetic clinic at the Institute of Science and Technology-UNESP in São José dos Campos, presenting loss of the right hemi-maxilla. The patient was rehabilitated in 2012 with a removable partial palate obturator prosthesis and then distanced himself from treatment, which caused deleterious consequences due to the inherent wear of the material and the maladaptation of the prosthesis, causing him difficulties in speaking and swallowing. RESUMO O paciente foi encaminhado ao Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo para ressecção da lesão por um cirurgião de cabeça e pescoço. A ressecção foi realizada em janeiro de 2008 e o diagnóstico final foi osteossarcoma osteoblástico de baixo grau. Ele foi encaminhado à clínica de próteses do Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia-UNESP em São José dos Campos, apresentando perda da hemi-maxila direita. O paciente foi reabilitado em 2012 com uma prótese de obturador palatino parcial removível e, posteriormente, se distanciou do tratamento, o que causou consequências deletérias devido ao desgaste inerente do material e à má adaptação da prótese, causando-lhe dificuldades na fala e deglutição. ABSTRACT: This trial evaluated the production performance, gastrointestinal nematode infection (GIN), and selected blood analytes, in Corriedale lambs during the finishing phase in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS) with 2 stocking rates. Fifty-two Corriedale lambs were divided into 4 groups: a semi confinement system with a low stocking rate (T1) for 70 days; a semi confinement system with a high stocking rate (T2) for 70 days; confinement for 28 days, followed by semi confinement with a low stocking rate (T3) for 42 days; and confinement for 28 days, followed by semi confinement with a high stocking rate (T4) for 42 days. Body weight, dry matter intake, blood collection, and faecal analysis of nematode eggs were performed for each animal. The stocking rates did not influence body weight gain for the semiconfined lambs (T1 and T2) or for the confined/semiconfined lambs (T3 and T4). All treatments had lower EPG counts at the end of the experimental period. The nematode genera identified during the experiment trial were Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) for packed cell volume, total plasma protein, and eosinophil means between treatments. These results suggested that the confinement followed by semi confinement in an ICLS, was an option for lamb production during the finishing phase which could be useful in reducing GIN without affecting the production performance. RESUMO: O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo, infecção por nematódeos gastrointestinais (GIN) e variáveis sanguíneas selecionadas, em cordeiras Corriedale durante a fase de terminação em sistema integrado lavoura-pecuária (ICLS) com duas taxas de lotação. O experimento utilizou 52 cordeiras Corriedale divididas em quatro grupos: sistema de semiconfinamento com baixa taxa de lotação por área (T1) por 70 dias; sistema de semiconfinamento com alta lotação por área (T2) por 70 dias; confinamento por 28 dias, seguido de semiconfinamento com baixa lotação por área (T3) por 42 dias; e confinamento por 28 dias, seguido de semiconfinamento com alta lotação por área (T4) por 42 dias. Peso corporal, ingestão de matéria seca, coleta de sangue e análise fecal para ovos de nematódeos foram avaliados para cada animal. As taxas de lotação não influenciaram no ganho de peso dos cordeiros semiconfinados (T1 e T2) ou nos confinados/semiconfinados (T3 e T4). Todos os tratamentos apresentaram contagens menores de EPG no final do período experimental. Os gêneros de nematódeos identificados durante o experimento foram Haemonchus e Trichostrongylus.
