Organophosphates are prevalent in agrochemicals and chemical warfare agents, posing significant health and safety concerns. These compounds are known for their high chemical stability and to address this issue, nucleophilic catalysts have emerged as a promising solution for their degradation. Herein, we focus on a novel material created through the combined effects of imidazole and crumpled graphene (CG) to develop a nanocatalyst for the neutralization (i.e., degradation) of organophosphates (OPs). The strategy involves the covalent functionalization of CG with imidazole groups without disrupting the three-dimensional structure of CG. This unique combination results in a synergistic effect between neighboring imidazole groups within CG, significantly enhancing the catalytic performance. The catalytic increment (kCAT/kH2O) achieved is in the order of 104, demonstrating the remarkable efficiency of this catalyst. In this paper, we report the characterization of Brazilian red propolis from two origins. The commercial value of this product is due to its composition and bioactivity, which depend on geographical factors. Total and individual phenolic, antioxidant, and medium infrared spectroscopic (MIR) characterization of 72 red propolis samples from two origins (Bahia (BA) and Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil) were performed. Samples from RN showed higher concentrations of biomarkers. The BA samples showed higher antioxidant capacity despite having lower concentrations of the red propolis biomarker molecules when compared to the RN samples. The MIRS showed differences regarding the origin. The principal component analysis confirmed the differences, generating well-defined groups. Linear discriminant analysis or discriminant analysis and and partial least squares discriminant analysis showed excellent model performance. The models with MIRS data from raw propolis have a high correct classification rate and require no sample preparation. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Resumen: El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue establecer normas preliminares para la Batería Multidimensional de Autorregulación para la Comprensión Lectora (BAMA-Lectora), compuesta por nueve escalas. La muestra del estudio estuvo compuesta por 910 estudiantes de la Enseñanza Fundamental de escuelas públicas brasileñas. Las normas para las escalas BAMA-Lectura que tienen formato de respuesta tipo Likert se establecieron con base en cuatro subgrupos clasificados con base en percentiles, divididos en grupos de género, historial de repetición y año escolar. Para la EAC-CL, cuyo formato de respuesta difiere del resto de básculas de la batería, se establecieron estándares separados. Se encontró que no todas las escalas de la batería tienen invariancia de medición para género, historial de repetición y año escolar. Se identificaron diferenciaciones en la EAC-CL en estas variables. Los resultados sugieren parsimonia para la aplicación de análisis de comparación de grupos en BAMA-Lectora. Futuros estudios con la batería deberían realizarse con nuevas muestras y aplicando otras técnicas estadísticas para establecer normas.
Abstract: The main aim of this research was to establish preliminary standards for the Self-Regulation for Reading Comprehension Multidimensional Battery (BAMA-Reading), consisting of nine scales. The study sample comprised 910 Middle School students from Brazilian public schools. Norms for the BAMA-Reading scales, which have a Likert-type response format, were established based on percentiles, with the sample classified into four subgroups divided by gender, repetition history, and school year. For the EAC-CL (Educational Assessment Battery for Reading Comprehension and Learning), whose response format differs from the other scales in the battery, separate standards were established. It was found that not all scales in the battery demonstrated measurement invariance for gender, repetition history, and school year. Variances were identified in the EAC-CL concerning these variables. The results suggest caution when applying group comparison analyses in BAMA-Reading. Future studies on the battery should involve new samples and employ advanced statistical techniques to establish more definitive standards.
Resumo: O principal objetivo desta pesquisa foi estabelecer normas preliminares para a Bateria Multidimensional da Autorregulação para a Compreensão de Leitura (BAMA-Leitura), composta por nove escalas. A amostra de estudo foi composta por 910 estudantes de escolas públicas brasileiras. As normas para as escalas da BAMA-Leitura que possuem formato de resposta tipo Likert foram estabelecidas a partir de quatro subgrupos classificados com base em percentis, divididas em grupos de sexo, histórico de repetência e ano escolar. Para a EAC-CL, cujo formato de resposta difere das demais escalas da bateria foram estabelecidas normas à parte. Os resultados sugerem parcimônia para a aplicação de análises de comparação de grupos na BAMA-Leitura. Estudos futuros com a bateria devem ser conduzidos com novas amostras e aplicando outras técnicas estatísticas para o estabelecimento de normas.

Abstract Dropout from higher education is a worldwide phenomenon with negative consequences for students, families, institutions, and society. As student numbers increase, students become more heterogeneous in terms of academic competencies, motivation, and trajectories, creating new challenges for promoting student persistence. Higher education can pose difficulties for students, increasing their vulnerability and risk of underachievement or dropout. This study involved 2843 first-year students of a Portuguese public university. The aim was to identify the variables that predict the decision to persist or drop out, using the regression tree method. The results show a good model that classifies students into four groups and reveals that the decision to drop out is different for traditional and non-traditional students, suggesting higher vulnerability of older students. Some reflections are offered about institutional practices.
Resumen La deserción en la educación superior es un fenómeno mundial que genera consecuencias adversas para los estudiantes, las familias, las instituciones y la sociedad. Con el incremento de la matrícula, los estudiantes se vuelven más heterogéneos en términos de competencias académicas, motivación y trayectorias, lo cual supone nuevos retos para la promoción de la permanencia estudiantil. La educación superior puede plantear ciertas dificultades para los estudiantes, las cuales aumentan su vulnerabilidad y su riesgo de bajo rendimiento o deserción. El estudio, en el que participaron 2843 estudiantes de primer año de una universidad pública portuguesa, tiene por objetivo identificar las variables que predicen la decisión de permanecer o desertar, por medio del método del árbol de regresión. Los resultados muestran un buen modelo que clasifica a los estudiantes en cuatro grupos y revela que la decisión de desertar es diferente para los estudiantes tradicionales y no tradicionales, apuntando así a una mayor vulnerabilidad de estudiantes mayores. Se ofrecen algunas reflexiones en torno a las prácticas institucionales.

Abstract Since the first reported case of COVID-19 in Brazil, the public and private educational system started to close. Up to November 2020, scientific discussions about the return of schooling activities have been rarely performed by the national scientific community and police-makers. The great delay of school returning in Brazil contrasts with successful international strategies of school reopening worldwide and seems counterintuitive with the reopening of non-essential activities. Here, important issues to be considered before and during school reopening are reviewed and discussed. COVID-19 testing is essential to avoid disease spreading, but high cost of individual RT-qPCRs impairs an extensive testing strategy for school returning. To reduce costs and increase the speed of diagnosis, we tested the efficiency of a pooled-sample PCR strategy in a cohort of the educational staff in the city of Macaé/RJ, finding five asymptomatic individuals (0,66%) among the 754 people tested. Thus, a polled-sample PCR testing strategy of the educational staff might prevent infection spreading in schools at a reasonable cost. We discuss how our test strategy could be coupled with internationally recognized safety rules to allow for a safe school return and how countries from different world regions are dealing with educational activities during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Resumen El análisis del desempeño matemático de los alumnos favorece el ajuste y la individualización de los procesos educativos para esta área de aprendizaje. Por su relevancia en la vida cotidiana, el docente deberá de tener presente la funcionalidad y transferencia que tienen los aprendizajes matemáticos. La generalización de investigaciones que aún en teoría y práctica se conforman como imprescindibles. En este sentido, son escasos los estudios en el plano curricular para la Matemáticas relativos a la educación de los escolares superdotados y/o matemáticamente talentosos. De esta forma, se torna pertinente analizar tales competencias matemáticas y en qué factores estos alumnos sobresalen. El presente estudio tiene como propósito analizar los tipos de raciocinio y representaciones matemáticas a partir de tareas de resolución de problemas desarrolladas por escolares superdotados diagnosticados en comparación con alumnado escolarizado en su mismo nivel educativo con un buen rendimiento en el área de Matemáticas. Se han considerado 42 escolares evaluados como superdotados, y se equiparan con 52 alumnos de rendimiento alto considerando su edad y año de escolaridad (escolares entre los 10 y los 15 años de edad). Los resultados sugieren la existencia de diferencias estadísticamente significativas en determinadas tareas y representaciones, mostrando los escolares con mayor potencialidad representaciones más complejas y raciocinios más elaborados en general. Estudios con estos alumnos permiten conocer la naturaleza de sus potencialidades y favorecer la individualización de los procesos educativos.
Abstract The analysis of the mathematical performance of the students favors the adjustment and individualization of the educational processes for this area of learning. Due to its relevance in daily life, the teacher must bear in mind the functionality and transfer of mathematical learning. The generalization of research that combines theory and practice is essential. In this sense, there are few studies at the curriculum level for mathematics related to the education of gifted and/or mathematically talented students. Thus, it becomes pertinent to analyze such mathematical skills and the factors in which these students stand out. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of mathematical reasoning and representations based on problem-solving tasks expressed by gifted students on an educational level with a good performance in the area of Mathematics. Forty-two students were evaluated as gifted, and were compared with 52 high-performance students in terms of age and school year (10-15 years old). The existence of statistically significant differences in certain tasks and representations was verified, with the schoolchildren with the greatest potential showing more complex representations and more elaborate reasoning. Knowing the nature of the potentialities favors the individualization of the educational processes.
Résumé L’analyse des performances mathématiques des élèves favorise l’ajustement et l’individualisation des processus éducatifs pour ce domaine d’apprentissage. En raison de son importance dans la vie quotidienne, l’enseignant envisager la fonctionnalité et le transfert de l’apprentissage mathématique. La généralisation des investigations combinant théorie et pratique est considérée comme essentielle. À cet égard, les études sur des programmes pour les mathématiques liées à l’éducation des écoliers surdoués et / ou talentueux sont rares. Ceci permet de réfléchir sur ces compétences mathématiques et oú des facteurs ces élèves sont excellents. Cette étude vise à analyser les types de raisonnement et de représentations mathématiques à partir de la résolution de problèmes par des étudiants surdoués diagnostiqués par rapport aux élèves au même niveau d’instruction avec de bons résultats dans le domaine des mathématiques. Quarante-deux élèves ont été évalués comme surdoués et ils sont assimilés à 52 élèves très performants tenant compte de leur âge et de leur année de scolarité (écoliers âgés de 10 à 15 ans). Les résultats semblent indiquer l’existence de différences statistiquement significatives dans certaines tâches et représentations, montrant aux écoliers avec une plus grande potentialité des représentations, plus complexes et avec un raisonnement plus élaboré en général. Les études avec ces étudiants nous permettent de connaître la nature de leurs potentialités et favorisent l’individualisation de l’apprentissage.
Resumo A análise do desempenho matemático dos alunos favorece o ajustamento e a individualização dos processos educativos para esta área de aprendizagem. Devido à sua relevância na vida quotidiana, o docente deve ter em conta a funcionalidade e transferência das aprendizagens matemáticas. A generalização de investigações que combinam teoria e prática é considerada essencial. Neste sentido, são escassos os estudos no plano curricular para a Matemática relativos à formação de alunos sobredotados e/ou matematicamente talentosos. Deste modo, torna-se pertinente analisar essas competências matemáticas e em que fatores esses alunos se destacam. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar os tipos de raciocínio e de representações matemáticas a partir de tarefas de resolução de problemas desenvolvidas por alunos com diagnóstico de sobredotação em comparação com alunos matriculados no mesmo nível de escolaridade com bom desempenho na área da Matemática. Foram considerados 42 alunos avaliados como sobredotados e comparados com 52 alunos de alto rendimento considerando a sua idade e a etapa de escolaridade (alunos entre os 10 e os 15 anos). Os resultados sugerem a existência de diferenças estatisticamente significativas em determinadas tarefas e representações, evidenciando os alunos com maior potencial representações mais complexas e raciocínios mais elaborados em geral. Os estudos com estes alunos permitem conhecer a natureza das suas potencialidades e favorecem a individualização dos processos educativos.

Esta versão resumida consiste em 2 fatores, com 3 itens cada. Um fator avalia a argumentação geral e o outro as formas de raciocínio mais utilizadas no dia a dia. Além disso, ambos os fatores avaliam indiretamente a tomada de decisão e a resolução de problemas, graças à natureza dos itens, nos quais se levantam problemas diários que devem ser resolvidos e para os quais, às vezes, devem ser tomadas decisões. A análise fatorial confirmatória nos oferece índices adequados de ajustamento que sustentam a estrutura da versão resumida do teste apresentado. Os coeficientes de confiabilidade e validade são razoavelmente robustos, o que faz com que este teste sirva para os objetivos de investigação declarados.
Abstract The aim of our study was to validate a short version of the PENCRISAL complete critical thinking test, in Spanish and Portuguese. Here we present the first. This short version consists of 2 factors, with 3 items each. One factor assesses general argumentation, and the other the forms of reasoning most used on a daily basis. In addition, both factors indirectly evaluate decision-making and problem solving, thanks to the nature of the items, in which daily problems are raised that must be solved and for which decisions must sometimes be made. The confirmatory factor analysis offers us solid and consistent indices that support the structure of the short version of the test presented. The reliability and validity coefficients are reasonably robust, as to make this test serve very well for the stated objectives.
Resumen El objetivo de la investigación ha sido validar una versión breve de la prueba completa de pensamiento crítico (PC) PENCRISAL, en español y portugués. Aquí se presenta la primera. Esta versión breve consta de 2 factores, con 3 ítems cada uno. Un factor evalúa argumentación general, y el otro las formas de razonamiento más empleadas a diario. Además, ambos factores evalúan indirectamente la toma de decisiones y la solución de problemas, gracias a la naturaleza de los ítems, en los que se plantean problemas cotidianos que se deben resolver y, en ocasiones, hay que tomar decisiones. El análisis factorial confirmatorio nos ofrece índices de ajuste adecuados que avalan la estructura de la versión breve del test presentado. Los coeficientes de fiabilidad y validez son razonablemente robustos, lo que hace que esta prueba sirva a los objetivos de investigación establecidos.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is the largest pandemic in modern history with very high infection rates and considerable mortality. The disease, which emerged in China’s Wuhan province, had its first reported case on December 29, 2019, and spread rapidly worldwide. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic and global health emergency. Since the outbreak, efforts to develop COVID-19 vaccines, engineer new drugs, and evaluate existing ones for drug repurposing have been intensively undertaken to find ways to control this pandemic. COVID-19 therapeutic strategies aim to impair molecular pathways involved in the virus entrance and replication or interfere in the patients’ overreaction and immunopathology. Moreover, nanotechnology could be an approach to boost the activity of new drugs. Several COVID-19 vaccine candidates have received emergency-use or full authorization in one or more countries, and others are being developed and tested. This review assesses the different strategies currently proposed to control COVID-19 and the issues or limitations imposed on some approaches by the human and viral genetic variability.

La atención a los estudiantes superdotados y con altas capacidades en la Región Autónoma de Madeira (RAM) se ha mencionado como pionera en el contexto portugués. En este estudio se pretende trazar la evolución de los mecanismos de atención de los niños y adolescentes con altas capacidades en la RAM, con su respectivo marco legal, de lo que viene sucediendo desde los años 90. Los datos fueron recogidos a partir de entrevistas a algunos de los participantes en este proceso y a través de la consulta de documentos disponibles. Así, fue posible organizar el recorrido histórico de la superdotación en Madeira, presentando un breve encuadre del surgimiento del apoyo a la sobredotación y describiendo tres fases secuenciales del mismo: (a) implementación de servicios de atención; (b) consolidación de la prestación de servicios; y (c) servicios prestados en la actualidad. En general, a pesar de la evolución y la modificación de los servicios, la inversión se ha centrado en el proceso de identificación y de intervención, en la formación y en la práctica basada en evidencia, buscando hacer converger las actuaciones con las orientaciones internacionales en el área. Se apuntan algunas reflexiones sobre las políticas públicas en el área de la superdotación, teniendo como premisa la escuela inclusiva y una posible mejora de servicios que pueda facilitar la igualdad de oportunidades y la diferenciación de las prácticas educativas en función de las características y necesidades de cada alumno.
A atenção à sobredotação e a alunos com altas capacidades, na Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM), tem sido referenciada pelo seu pioneirismo no contexto português. Neste artigo descreve-se a evolução, desde os anos 90, dos mecanismos de atendimento das crianças e adolescentes com elevadas capacidades, e respetivo enquadramento legal. Os dados foram recolhidos a partir de entrevistas a alguns dos intervenientes neste processo e através da consulta de documentos disponíveis. Assim, foi possível organizar o percurso histórico da sobredotação na Madeira, apresentando um breve enquadramento da emergência do apoio à sobredotação e descrevendo três fases sequenciais do mesmo: (a) implementação de serviços de atendimento; (b) consolidação da prestação de serviços; e (c) serviços prestados na atualidade. De uma forma geral, apesar da evolução e modificação dos serviços, o investimento tem-se centrado no processo de identificação e de intervenção, na formação e na prática baseada em evidência, procurando fazer convergir as atuações com as orientações internacionais na área. Apontam-se algumas reflexões sobre as políticas públicas na área da sobredotação, tendo como premissa a escola inclusiva e uma melhoria de serviços que promovam a igualdade de oportunidades e a diferenciação das práticas educativas, em função das características e necessidades de cada aluno.
Attention to giftedness and high ability students, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), has been acknowledged for being pioneer in Portugal. The main purpose of this paper is to outline the evolution of practices for high abilities students, and their legal framework, since the 90s, in RAM. Data were collected from interviews with some of the actors in this process and through analysis of available documents. Thus, it was possible to organise the historical path of giftedness in Madeira. So, it is presented a brief framework of the emergence of giftedness educational support and three sequential phases are also described: (a) implementation of support services; (b) consolidation of the provision of services; and (c) current services provided. In general, despite the evolution and modification of the organisation of the services, the investment has been centered on the identification and intervention process, on training and on evidence-based practice, seeking convergence of intervention with international guidelines. Some reflections on public policies about giftedness are pointed out, based on the premise of an inclusive school and a possible improvement of practices that might facilitate equal opportunities and differentiation of educational practices, according to the characteristics and needs of each student.

Investigation of Mycoplasma spp. in birds of the Rio de Janeiro Zoo by isolation and PCR

RESUMO: O Brasil é um dos países com maior avifauna do mundo. O confinamento de aves associado ao contato próximo a outros animais e seres humanos favorece a disseminação de agentes etiológicos causadores de doenças respiratórias. Dentre eles, os micoplasmas podem causar doença assintomática ou aparente que se manifesta em aves por espirros, estertores, conjuntivite, corrimentos oculares e nasais. São diversos os micoplasmas descritos causadores de doença em aves, com destaque para Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) e Mycoplasma synoviae (MS). O diagnóstico de Mycoplasma spp. pode ser feito pela observação clínica e análises laboratoriais. O diagnóstico molecular pela Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) ganhou impulso por sua rapidez, sensibilidade e baixo custo em relação às técnicas de isolamento do agente que levam até 21 dias para conclusão do gênero Mycoplasma. Objetivou-se verificar a ocorrência da infecção por Mycoplasma spp. em aves no Zoológico do Rio de Janeiro (Rio Zoo), por isolamento e PCR. Do plantel de 635 aves do Rio Zoo, foram estudadas 81 para detecção de Mycoplasma spp., quando contidas para exames rotineiros de avaliação da condição de saúde. Essas aves eram pertencentes às ordens Psittaciformes (45), Accipitriformes (18), Galliformes (7), Piciformes (5), Strigiformes (4), Falconiformes (1) e Cariamiformes (1), todas já identificadas por microchip ou por anilha. Não houve isolamento de micoplasmas em nenhuma das amostras testadas, enquanto na PCR, 62,96% (51/81) foram positivas, sendo 1,96% (1/51) identificadas como MG e 19,61% (10/51) como MS, representando 1,23% (1/81) e 12,34% (10/81) da população total estudada. A PCR demonstrou ser uma técnica mais efetiva que o isolamento na detecção de Mycoplasma spp. em aves. Foi possível detectar micoplasmas nas aves do Riozoo sem sinal clínico respiratório, tendo MS maior prevalência do que MG. As positividades para Mycoplasma spp., MG e MS foram diferentes entre as ordens de aves estudadas, sendo a maior ocorrência nas aves de rapina, seguida dos Galliformes e dos Piciformes. A presença de MG e MS nas aves do Rio de Janeiro Zoo confirma a circulação destes agentes e a necessidade de mais estudos sobre a disseminação de micoplasmas em zoológicos para análise epidemiológica dessas bactérias nesse local.
ABSTRACT: Brazil is one of the countries with the most abundant avifauna in the world. The confinement of birds associated with close contact with other animals and humans favor the spread of agents of respiratory diseases. Among them, mycoplasmas can cause asymptomatic or apparent disease that manifests in birds by coughing, sneezing, rales, conjunctivitis, ocular and nasal discharge. Several described mycoplasmas cause disease in birds, especially Mycoplasma gallisepticum(MG) andMycoplasma synoviae(MS). The diagnosis ofMycoplasmaspp. can be done by clinical observation and laboratory analysis. Molecular diagnosis by PCR was boosted by its speed, sensitivity, and low cost of agent isolation techniques that take up to 21 days to complete. This study aimed to verify the occurrence ofMycoplasmaspp. in birds of the Rio de Janeiro Zoo (Rio Zoo), by isolation and PCR. Of the total 635 birds from the Rio Zoo, 81 were studied for detection ofMycoplasmaspp., when taken for routine health assessment exams. These birds belonged to the following orders: Psittaciformes (45), Accipitriformes (18), Galliformes (7), Piciformes (5), Strigiformes (4), Falconiformes (1) and Cariamiformes (1), all individuals already identified by microchip or leg-ring. There was no isolation of mycoplasmas in any of the samples tested, whereas, in the PCR, 62.96% (51/81) were positive, with 1.96% (1/51) identified as MG and 19.61% (10/51) as MS, representing 1.23% (1/81) and 12.34% (10/81) of the total population studied. PCR was shown to be a more effective technique than isolation in the detection ofMycoplasmaspp. in birds. It was possible to detect mycoplasmas in birds from Riozoo with no clinical respiratory signs, with higher MS prevalence than MG. The positivities forMycoplasmaspp., MS, and MG were different among the orders studied, being the highest occurrence in birds of prey, followed by Galliformes and Piciformes. The presence of MG and MS in birds of Rio de Janeiro Zoo confirms the circulation of these agents and the need for further studies on the dissemination of mycoplasmas in zoos for the epidemiological analysis of these bacteria in these places.
