Abstract Objective To describe the scenario of child undernutrition in Brazil and its determinants. Data source Narrative review of the literature with inclusion of data from population surveys, surveillance and monitoring systems, and active search in favelas and underserved communities carried out by CREN. Data synthesis Household surveys carried out from 1974 to 2019 indicate that undernutrition (<5 years) decreased until 2006. Underweight (W/A ≤-2 Z) and stunting (H/A ≤-2 Z) showed a decrease of 17% to 3% and 37% to 7%, respectively. After 2006, there was an increase in underweight of 53% and 76% for wasting (BMI/A ≤-2 Z), with the prevalence of stunting being stagnant at around 7%. Active search data in favelas and underserved communities show that the prevalence of stunting is 11% in those <5 years. In 2021, 30% of the population lived in poverty, 73% of which were black or brown. Stunting in black and brown children <5 years old is, respectively, 9% and 12% higher when compared to white children. Poverty decreased between 2012 and 2015 (27 to 25%), but increased again (2016=26% to 2021=30%), in parallel with food insecurity, which decreased between 2004 and 2013 (12% to 6%), but reached its worst level in the historical series (2022:15%). Conclusion Despite advances, Brazil's social protection system was not able to reduce inequalities and the reversal of the trend towards decreasing child undernutrition could be observed from 2006 onwards. determinants systems CREN 197 201 5 (< W/A WA W A ≤2 2 ≤ ≤- Z H/A HA H 17 3 37 7 7% respectively 53 76 BMI/A BMIA BMI Z, , 11 < 2021 30 poverty 73 9 12 27 (2 25%, 25 25% 25%) 2016=26% 201626 2016 26 (2016=26 2021=30%, 202130 2021=30% 2021=30%) insecurity 200 (12 6%, 6 6% 6%) 202215%. 202215 2022 15% . 15 (2022:15%) advances Brazils s onwards 19 20 ( 1 202 2016=26 20162 (2016=2 20213 2021=30 (1 202215% 20221 (2022:15% 2016=2 (2016= 2021=3 (2022:15 2016= (2016 2021= (2022:1 (201 (2022: (20 (2022 (202

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate smartphone addiction and postural alterations in the cervical region in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 281 adolescents (15 to 19 years old), attending the 1st to the 3rd grades of High School, carried out between September and October 2019 in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data collection took place in two stages. In the first, they answered four self-administered questionnaires: sociodemographic questionnaire, health conditions and smartphone use, Nordic Musculoskeletal Symptom Questionnaire (NMQ), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI-BR). In the second stage, they were submitted to photogrammetry using the Postural Assessment Software (SAPO) and anthropometric assessment (weight and height). The software SPSS Statistics version 23.0 was used for data analysis. Results: Of the total number of adolescents, 63.3% (n=178) showed smartphone addiction, using it for 5.8 hours (±3.5) during the week and 8.7 (±4.0) hours on the weekend. When analyzing postural alignment in the anterior view, a significant reduction in the lateral head tilt was observed when typing on the smartphone (p=0.002) compared to the anatomical position (baseline). In the lateral view, an increase in head anteriorization was observed during smartphone use (p<0.05). There was an association between smartphone addiction and head anteriorization (p<0.05). Conclusions: The use of the smartphone in the typing position causes postural alterations in the cervical region, especially in adolescents with smartphone addiction. Therefore, health promotion measures that alert adolescents to the adverse effects caused by prolonged smartphone use are necessary.
Abstract The study aimed to understand families’ expectations regarding the care needs of children eligible for palliative care (PC). This is a qualitative multiple case study research, carried out in two stages: 1) identification of children eligible for palliative care; and 2) study of case units, through semi-structured interviews with 18 family members directly linked to monitoring the children. Bardin's thematic analysis was used, from which three categories emerged: 1) waiting for a miracle; 2) between acceptance and miracle; and 3) accepting and seeking strategies for care. Experiences of denial and acceptance of the disease were observed, with impacts on expectations regarding outcomes. Religion emerged as an essential element for coping and searching for meaning in the lived experience. Acceptance of the disease in some cases encouraged the search for care strategies, without excluding hope. There were non-explicit expressions of grief and no signs of an approach by the team. It is concluded that there is a need for welcoming, qualified listening, guidance and support from health teams regarding the hopes and needs of family members of children eligible for PC, as family expectations have a direct impact on the possibilities of less traumatic coping.

Abstract Studies regarding serum Progesterone (P4) concentration and Clinical Pregnancy Rates (CPR) in fresh Embryo Transfer (ET) after Controlled Ovarian Stimulation Cycles (COS) remain inconclusive. To find a P4 cutoff point on fresh ET day associated with higher CPR, and to identify predictive factors of CPR and P4, the authors conducted a prospective cohort of 106 patients who underwent COS at a public IVF center. The luteal phase was supported with vaginal micronized progesterone (200 mg, 8/8h), beginning on oocyte retrieval day. The primary outcome was CPR beyond the 8th week of pregnancy. A ROC curve was constructed to identify the best cutoff point correlated with higher CPR. Multivariate analysis evaluated predictive variables of CPR and P4 concentration. P4 levels showed no significant differences between pregnant and non-pregnant patients (67.12 ± 31.1 ng/mL vs. 64.17 ± 61.76, p = 0.7465). The cutoff point correlated with higher CPR was P4 ≥ 28.9 ng/mL (AUC 0.5654). Women's age (OR = 0.878; 95 % CI 0.774-0.995) and top-quality embryo transfer (OR = 2.89; 95 % CI 1.148-7.316) were associated with CPR. Women's age ≥ 40 years (OR = 0.0956; 95 % CI 0.0156-0.5851), poor response to COS (OR = 0.0964; 95 % CI 0.0155-0.5966), and follicles ≥ 10 mm (OR = 1.465; 95 % CI 1.013-2.117) were associated with the cutoff point. As the ROC curve was unsatisfactory, P4 ≥ 28.9 ng/mL should not be used to infer gestational success. In fresh ET, P4 concentration may merely reflect a woman's age and individual response to COS rather than being a reliable CPR predictor. ABSTRACT Asbestos was largely used in Brazil. It is a mineral that induces pleural and pulmonary fibrosis, and it is a potent carcinogen. Our objective was to develop recommendations for the performance of adequate imaging tests for screening asbestos-related diseases. We searched peer-reviewed publications, national and international technical documents, and specialists’ opinions on the theme. Based on that, the major recommendations are: Individuals exposed to asbestos at the workplace for ≥ 1 year or those with a history of environmental exposure for at least 5 years, all of those with a latency period > 20 years from the date of initial exposure, should initially undego HRCT of the chest for investigation. Individuals with pleural disease and/or asbestosis should be considered for regular lung cancer monitoring. Risk calculators should be adopted for lung cancer screening, with a risk estimate of 1.5%. Abstract Background Increased malignancy frequency is well documented in adult-systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but with limited reports in childhood-onset SLE (cSLE) series. We explored the frequency of malignancy associated with cSLE, describing clinical and demographic characteristics, disease activity and cumulative damage, by the time of malignancy diagnosis. Method A retrospective case-notes review, in a nationwide cohort from 27 Pediatric Rheumatology centres, with descriptive biopsy-proven malignancy, disease activity/damage accrual, and immunosuppressive treatment were compiled in each participating centre, using a standard protocol. Results Of the 1757 cSLE cases in the updated cohort, 12 (0.7%) developed malignancy with median time 10 years after cSLE diagnosis. It is concluded that there is a need for welcoming, qualified listening, guidance and support from health teams regarding the hopes and needs of family members of children eligible for PC, as family expectations have a direct impact on the possibilities of less traumatic coping. families PC. Ainda, os pacientes com LP apresentaram maior dimensão do átrio (37,3 ± 4,4 vs. 32,1 ± 4,3 mm, p= 0,001) e maior volume atrial (30,2 ± 7,2 vs. 24,9 ± 9,0 mL/m2, p=0,02), massa do Ventrículo Esquerdo (VE) (79,3 ± 17,4 vs. 67,1 ± 19,4; p=0,02), e parâmetros sistólicos reduzidos do VE (E’ lateral, p= 0,001) (E’ septal, p= 0,001), (razão E/E’, p= 0,02). Fundamento (LP descrita Objetivo Métodos speckletracking speckle tracking Strain Global SLG. . Abstract Background: Cardiomyopathy associated with partial lipodystrophy (PL) has not been well described yet. Objective: To characterize cardiac morphology and function in PL. Methods: Patients with familial PL and controls were prospectively assessed by transthoracic echocardiography and with speckle-tracking echocardiography (global longitudinal strain, GLS). The relationship between echocardiographic variables and PL diagnosis was tested with regression models, considering the effect of systolic blood pressure (SBP). Significance level of 5% was adopted. Results: Twenty-nine patients with PL were compared to 17 controls. They did not differ in age (p=0.94), gender or body mass index (p= 0.05). Patients with PL had statistically higher SBP (p=0.02) than controls. Also, PL patients had higher left atrial dimension (37.3 ± 4.4 vs. 32.1 ± 4.3 mm, p= 0.001) and left atrial (30.2 ± 7.2 vs. 24.9 ± 9.0 mL/m2,p=0.02), left ventricular (LV) mass (79.3 ± 17.4 vs. 67.1 ± 19.4, p=0.02), and reduced diastolic LV parameters (E’ lateral, p= 0.001) (E’ septal, p= 0.001), (E/E’ ratio, p= 0.02). LV ejection fraction (64.7 ± 4.6 vs. 62.2 ± 4.4 %, p= 0.08) and GLS were not statistically different between groups (-17.1 ± 2.7 vs. -18.0 ± 2.0 %, p= 0.25). There was a positive relationship of left atrium (β 5.6, p<0.001), posterior wall thickness, (β 1.3, p=0.011), E’ lateral (β -3.5, p=0.002) and E’ septal (β -3.2, p<0.001) with PL diagnosis, even after adjusted for SBP. Conclusion: LP patients have LV hypertrophy, left atrial enlargement, and LV diastolic dysfunction although preserved LVEF and GLS. Echocardiographic parameters are related to PL diagnosis independent of SBP. Background (PL yet Objective Methods speckletracking speckle tracking global strain . Abstract Porcine source attracts the biotechnological development of natural xenogeneic materials, due to the availability of collagen in soft tissues, but the use of the demineralized organic matrix of cortical bone remains little explored. This study developed a demineralized porcine cortical bone matrix and analyzed the interference of peroxidation on the composition, thermostability, porosity and swelling of the material. Fresh ribs were processed with 3%-30% hydrogen peroxide under single treatment (G1-G4) or double treatment (G5-G8), using native bone (NB) as a control. Physicochemical characterization, porosity histomorphometry and swelling evaluation were performed. There were infrared bands indicative of the prevalence of collagen and residual phosphate groups even after demineralization, mass loss events by thermogravimetry ranging from 94 to 590 °C, being more accelerated in G7 and G8, with all groups below the thermal stability of the NB, as well as similar endothermic events between treatments in differential calorimetry. Changes in lamellar bone morphology occurred in all tested groups, being more conservative in G1 and G2 and more aggressive in G7 and G8. The single treatment dilated pores and kept the matrix closer to the original, while the double treatment significantly enlarged and fused the bone canals mimicking a mesh. The permeable areas in the bone matrix were larger and the hydrophilicity was greater and more persistent for G5-G8 compared to G1-G4 and NB. Single exposure and at lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide suggest a better modulation of the tested determinants, for the generation of collagen biomaterial applied to bone regeneration. materials tissues explored composition thermostability material 3%30% 330 3% 30% 3 30 3%-30 G1G4 GG G4 G (G1-G4 G5G8, G5G8 G5 G8 , (G5-G8) NB (NB control characterization performed demineralization 9 59 C °C calorimetry original mesh G5-G G1-G determinants regeneration 3%30 33 3%-3 G1G (G1-G G5G (G5-G8 5 3%3 3%- (G5-G

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82.
ABSTRACT Retinal detachment related to retinopathy of prematurity is a surgical challenge, and vitrectomy can directly release transvitreal traction resulting from fibrous proliferation. The presence of iatrogenic breaks is a poor prognostic factor and has been considered a dismal prognosis. We report a case of premature female baby that underwent a 3-port 23-Gauge pars plana vitrectomy for stage 4A retinopathy of prematurity, with intraoperative progressive rhegmatogenous detachment complication. Lensectomy, extensive membrane dissection and vitreous shaving, followed by a posterior retinotomy, fluid air exchange, extensive peripheral photocoagulation and C3F8 15% injection were performed. Abstract Oviduct fluid extracellular vesicles (oEV) are essential for periconceptional events. The presence of EV has already been identified in the oviduct fluid (OF) from mammalian species, except in caprine. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and characterize the caprine oEV (coEV). Initially, in Experiment 1, coEV were isolated from the OF of either each animal individually or from a pool of three animals. In experiment 2, coEV were isolated during the follicular or luteal phases of the estrous cycle. The coEV were characterized by size distribution, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential using dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, as well as, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dot blotting (DB). Our results indicated that the physicochemical characteristics of the coEV were similar (P > 0.05), regardless of the isolation method (individual or pool). However, coEV collected during the luteal phase were larger (P < 0.05) than those during the follicular phase. The TEM showed spherical and cup-shaped particles, characteristic of exosomes. The DB revealed the presence of exosomal proteins involved in the biogenesis of coEV. In conclusion, it is possible to isolate and characterize coEV from a single caprine female and the estrous cycle phase influences the vesicles average size and PDI. Abstract This research aimed to characterize the syrup from Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp.) H. Rob.) roots as a rich source of prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and, thus, to formulate and characterize a gelatin-based coating enriched with Yacon syrup and to apply this coating on minimally processed melons. Then, the minimally processed melons were stored for 6 days at 10 °C and they were evaluated regarding their storage potential through quality, sensory and microbiological attributes, and bioavailability of FOS. Yacon syrup presents 17.22% of FOS, high antioxidant ferric reducing oxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) activities, 60.88% of sugars, 66.25% of carbohydrates, 2,148.1 µg kg−1 of chlorogenic acid, and 13,897.2 µg gallic acid kg−1 of phenolic contents. The incorporation of 10% Yacon syrup in the gelatin matrix increased coating thickness, accentuated the yellow color, increased the hydrophilic character, and lowered moisture. Yacon syrup-enriched gelatin matrix coating preserved the postharvest quality of minimally processed melon for 5 days at 10 °C with increased functional properties due to FOS bioavailability and higher total phenolic and carotenoid contents.
