Abstract The current pandemic has rocked the lives of human beings everywhere in ways never imagined, forcing us to question where our civilization is headed. In this article, we explore and discuss scientific evidence that helps explain recent events in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a zoonotic-origin novel virus, SARS-CoV-2, that is genetically close to two coronavirus types isolated in bats. The transmission dynamics to humans from the original and intermediary hosts remain poorly understood, but it is highly likely that the SARS-CoV-2 virus infected humans after undergoing an interspecies transfer from bats to an intermediate species, and from there to human beings. Crossing the species barrier is largely fostered by industrial-scale agricultural practices that simplify original ecosystem connections by reducing biodiversity, facilitating the emergence of new infectious diseases. The scientific community has played an exemplary role in responding to this global emergency, working to find timely, relevant solutions for governments and society as a whole. We need to take this opportunity to promote a global and open science that delves into the interrelationships of the biological, environmental, social and economic dimensions of this and other diseases while questioning current modes of production and their impact on the environment, and thus on human health worldwide.

Abstract: Evolutionary biology is largely concerned with the patterns of heritable phenotypic variation within populations and its dynamics during long transgenerational time periods. Historically, population-level models in evolution have been developed under certain simplifying assumptions. Two salient assumptions are: 1) the idea of genetic change as a direct indicator of phenotypic variation, and 2) the additivity of genetic effects on the phenotype. A more faithful model of biological evolution should explicitly consider a genotype-phenotype map and back mediated by a developmental mechanism, which specifies how phenotypic variation is generated in different environments, in an analogous way to that in which positional information emerges as a result of the feedback between internal and external restrictions. A dynamic non-linear perspective is thus mandatory to understand how phenotypic variation is generated given a genetic background; or in other words, to study the mechanistic basis of the genotype-phenotype map within an ecological and evolutionary context. The field that focuses on this is Ecological Evolutionary Developmental Biology (Eco-Evo-Devo) with a systemic approach and, in Mexico, it is an emergent field. In this paper we summarize the main Eco-Evo-Devo contributions with such approach from Mexican laboratories using plants and animals. We also discuss the biomedical implications of such an approach.

Resumen: La biología evolutiva se enfoca al estudio de los patrones de variación fenotípica heredables dentro de las poblaciones y su dinámica en tiempos transgeneracionales. Históricamente, los modelos evolutivos a nivel de las poblaciones se han desarrollado bajo supuestos simples. Dos de ellos particularmente importantes son: 1) el cambio genético es un indicador directo de la variación fenotípica y 2) existe aditividad de los impactos genéticos sobre el fenotipo. Un modelo más certero de evolución biológica debería de considerar explícitamente el mapeo entre genotipo y fenotipo y viceversa, ya que los mecanismos que median el desarrollo de los organismos y su interacción con el ambiente son los que generan la variación fenotípica. Una perspectiva dinámica no lineal es imprescindible para entender cómo se genera la variación fenotípica dado un fondo genético particular. Dicho de otra manera, es necesario entender los mecanismos sistémicos del mapeo entre genotipo y fenotipo en un contexto ecológico y evolutivo. El campo que comprende este enfoque es el de la Ecología Evolutiva del Desarrollo (Eco-Evo-Devo), el cual tiene además un enfoque sistémico. En México este campo ha crecido de manera incipiente a través del análisis de los mecanismos de desarrollo con enfoques de biología de sistemas, principalmente. En este artículo resumimos avances de este campo de estudio en México y cuáles son los principales grupos de investigación en el país, tanto en plantas como en animales. También evaluamos los impactos biomédicos de tomar esta perspectiva.

Auxins are hormones involved during the life cycle of plants and they are especially interesting because they participate in multiple morphogenetic processes. One important question is, how the same molecule can induce proliferation, elongation and differentiation at different moments and tissues during development. In this respect, auxin gradients are established within the tissues mainly by polar transport and both synthesis and inactivation of the bioactive forms. Auxin function however, is the result of a complex regulation that includes: 1) Differential expression of genes encoding the enzymes involved in the thaliana, synthesis of auxin, signalling proteins and transporters of this hormone; 2) Proteins that are involved in the signal transduction pathway; these proteins are capable of forming both homo and heterodimers which increases combinatorial formation and, therefore, the regulation of gene expression in response to auxin; 3) Some auxin carriers have dynamic and polar localization within the plasma membrane which allows flow of auxins to fit different growth conditions; 4) Finally, free auxin amount is modified by conjugation and compartmentalization. Understanding how these processes are coupled to give a differential response in cells and tissues, is one of the main challenges in the development of plants.

Las auxinas son hormonas que participan durante todo el ciclo de vida de las plantas y son particularmente interesantes ya que se distribuyen diferencialmente dentro de los tejidos lo que da lugar a diferentes procesos morfogenéticos. Una pregunta relevante acerca de las mismas es: ¿cómo es que la misma molécula puede inducir proliferación, alargamiento y diferenciación en distintos momentos y tejidos durante el desarrollo? Los gradientes de auxinas se establecen, principlamente, por medio del transporte polar, la síntesis y la inactivación de formas bioactivas y la función de las mismas es el resultado de una regulación compleja que incluye: 1) La cantidad de auxina biológicamente activa dentro de los tejidos que esta dada por la expresión diferencial de los genes, tanto en tiempo como en espacio, que codifican para receptores, transportadores y aquellos que participan en la síntesis de las auxinas; 2) La capacidad de formar tanto homo como heterodímeros de las proteínas que participan en la vía de transducción de señales lo cual aumenta la combinatoria de las mismas y, por lo tanto, la regulación de la expresión genética en respuesta a auxinas; 3) La localización dinámica y polar dentro de la membrana plasmática de algunos de los transportadores de auxinas lo cual permite que el flujo de las mismas se ajuste a diferentes condiciones de crecimiento; 4) Finalmente, la cantidad libre de auxinas que se modifica por conjugación y por compartamentalización. La comprensión de como estos procesos se acoplan para dar una respuesta diferencial de células y tejidos es uno de los principales retos actuales en el desarrollo de las plantas.
