ABSTRACT The greater round-eared bat, Tonatia bidens (Spix, 1823), is a medium-sized phyllostomid bat distributed in the north of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The diet and foraging patterns of this species are poorly known. We analyzed the composition of the diet of a population of T. bidens and how the temperature influences the consumption of vertebrates and invertebrates. To describe diet composition, we conducted weekly collections of food scrap from two monospecific night-perches. Data of temperature for the study period were taken from the meteorological station installed 300 m from the collection perches. The influence of temperature was evaluated using generalized linear models (GLMs) with negative binomial distribution. Tonatia bidens consumed 28 taxons (204 records), being at least 17 Artropods and 11 Passeriformes birds. Temperature explained a greater proportion of vertebrate abundance (R2 = 0.23) than invertebrate (R2 = 0.16) or to both pooled (R2 = 0.11). The relation with temperature was positive with invertebrates and negative with the vertebrates. The diet of the population of T. bidens comprised mainly invertebrates, which were the most frequent and diverse taxa. Data suggests that T. bidens has a diverse diet, with proportion of the item’s consumption varying temporally. Environmental factors, such as the temperature presented on this work, seems to be good proxies for the dietary traits of this species.

Phyllostomidae possui a maior diversidade morfológica e ecológica dentre os morcegos neotropicais desempenhando importantes papéis em ambientes florestais, tal como a dispersão de sementes. O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar a dieta de Artibeus lituratus e Sturnira lilium em três regiões fitogeográficas do bioma Mata Atlântica - Floresta Ombrófila Densa (FOD), Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) e Formação Pioneira com Influência Marinha (FPIM) - na Região Sul do Brasil. Os morcegos foram amostrados mensalmente com redes de neblina, seguindo o protocolo padrão para análise de dieta. Analisamos os dados de composição da dieta conforme atributos de riqueza, abundância e similaridade entre as três regiões amostradas (escalonamento multidimensional não métrico - NMDS e Índice de Bray-Curtis). Para A. lituratus e S. lilium o maior número de amostras provém da FES. Em todas as três regiões fitogeográficas, Ficus e Cecropia foram os gêneros mais consumidos por A. lituratus e Solanum por S. lilium. A abundância dos itens alimentares de A. lituratus e S. lilium foi influenciada pelas regiões fitogeográficas com a presença de agrupamentos distintos entre as amostras de FES, FOD e FPIM. A diferenciação da composição das dietas de A. lituratus e S. lilium entre as três fitofisionomias analisadas corrobora a hipótese de que a estrutura da vegetação influencia a composição da dieta dos morcegos. Essa diferença pode ser detectada apenas quando os itens alimentares são identificados em nível de espécie ou morfo-espécie.

The family Phyllostomidae has the greatest morphological and ecological diversity among Neotropical bats, playing important roles in forest environments. This study aimed to compare the diet of Artibeus lituratus and Sturnira lilium in three phytophysiognomies in the Atlantic Forest biome in Southern Brazil - Ombrophilous Dense Forest (FOD), Semideciduous Seasonal Forest (FES) and Restinga (FPIM). Bats were sampled monthly along a year using mist nets. Bat's diet was analyzed in feces following a standardized protocol. We analyzed data on diet composition by richness, abundance and similarity among the three sampled regions (Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling and Bray-Curtis Index). Samples from FES were the most abundant for both A. lituratus and S. lilium, with Ficus and Cecropia being the most consumed genera for the first species and Solanum for the second one in all sampled sites. The abundance of feeding items varied across phytogeographic regions.

Eumops patagonicus possui como limite leste de distribuição a província de Missiones na Argentina. Essa nota reporta a ampliação do limite leste de distribuição desta espécie e descreve o primeiro registro em Santa Catarina. Os indivíduos foram capturados no litoral norte do Estado, em ecossistema de Restinga. O registro amplia em 610 km o limite leste de distribuição e corresponde ao primeiro registro confirmado em Santa Catarina e na costa brasileira.

Eumops patagonicus has its eastern range limit in Misiones, Argentina. We report the extension of the easternmost range limit of E. patagonicus and describe the first record for this species from Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. The individuals were captured in the northern coast of the state, in a Restinga ecosystem. Records described herein extend the species’ range 610 km east and are the first from the state of Santa Catarina and along the Brazilian coast.

ABSTRACT We assessed elemental composition of the liver in mice subjected to one-time or chronic consumption of the juice of vegetables cultivated in a vegetable garden built over deposits of coal waste. Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce), Beta vulgaris L. (beet), Brassica oleracea L. var. italica (broccoli) and Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala (kale) were collected from the coal-mining area and from a certified organic farm (control). Elemental composition was analyzed by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. Concentrations of Mg, S, and Ca of mice subjected to one-time consumption of broccoli and concentrations of these same elements plus Si of mice receiving kale were higher in the coal-mining area. Concentrations of P, K, and Cu were increase after chronic consumption of lettuce from the coal-mining area, whereas the levels of Si, P, K, Fe, and Zn were higher in the group consuming kale from the coal-mining area. Our data suggests that people consuming vegetables grown over coal wastes may ingest significant amounts of chemical elements that pose a risk to health, since these plants contain both essential and toxic metals in a wide range of concentrations, which can do more harm than good.
