ABSTRACT Biofloc technology is a culture system that intensively uses microbial communities. Most bacteria can form aggregates around organic or inorganic surfaces. The high adsorption capacity, surface area, and flocculant properties of clay minerals make these compounds good candidates to stimulate biofloc formation, increase bacterial biomass, and improve nitrification. The objective of this study was to evaluate the addition of clay minerals to biofloc formation and its influence on the microbial community, nitrification, and zootechnical performance of Penaeus vannamei cultivated in a biofloc technology system. Experiment 1 involved the following treatments: control (without adding clay minerals), 10, 50, and 100 mg L−1, applied daily in the water. The treatments in experiment 2 were: control without product and inoculum, control without product and with inoculum, 50 mg L−1 clay mineral without inoculum and 50 mg L−1 clay mineral with inoculum. Both experiments with a density of 400 ind m−3. NO2 levels, total suspended solids, turbidity, differed significantly (P < 0.05) between treatments in experiment 1 and zootechnical performance parameters, where higher flocculant concentrations negatively affected these indices. In experiment 2, statistical differences were verified for NH3 and NO2 concentrations and the proximate composition of the bioflocs (P < 0.05), the addition of the inoculum of bioflocs influenced these results. In summary, the addition of clay minerals influenced biofloc formation, proximal composition, and the zootechnical performance of the cultivated shrimp but did not affect the abundance of microorganisms and nitrification.

A piscicultura marinha é um setor pouco desenvolvido na maricultura brasileira. Por vários anos foi avaliado o potencial de cultivo de algumas espécies como o robalo-peva Centropomus parallelus e o linguado Paralichtys orbignyanus. Entretanto, somente a partir do investimento sobre o bijupirá Rachycentron canadum é que empresas privadas passaram a demonstrar maior interesse na atividade. Além dos sistemas tradicionais de piscicultura, o bijupirá pode ser criado em tanques-rede oceânicos. Esta espécie apresenta crescimento rápido, atingindo entre 4 e 8 kg em um ano de vida, e carne de excelente qualidade. A carcinocultura tem sido questionada por questões ambientais, uso de insumos como farinha e óleo de peixe e disseminação de doenças. A criação de camarões em sistemas sem renovação de água "ZEAH" (Zero Exchange, Aerobic, Heterotrophic Culture Systems) ou cultivo em meio aos Bioflocos (BFT) aplica métodos que minimizam estes problemas, contribuindo para uma maricultura mais saudável.

Marine fish culture is still in its infancy in Brazil. For several years the snook Centropomus parallelus and the flounder Paralicithys orbignyanus were considered for aquaculture, but their commercial application has not yet been achieved. However, once technology for culture of cobia Rachycentron canadum became available, several private companies showed interest for marine fish culture. Besides traditional rearing technologes, cobia is suitable for open ocean culture in cages. This species shows fast growth rates, fish can achieve 4 or 8 kg within one year of age and its flesh is highly appreciated. Shrimp farming has been questioned for environmental issues, use of fish oil and fish meal, and spreading diseases. Rearing shrimp in systems without water exchange, know as ZEAH (Zero Exchange Aerobic Heterotrophic Culture systems) or bioflocs applies methods that minimize these problems, contributing for the development of sustainable shrimp farming.

Foi avaliada a substituição da farinha de peixe (FP) por farelo de soja (FS) em dietas práticas na sobrevivência e crescimento do camarão-rosa Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Seis dietas isoprotéicas e isoenergéticas, contendo diferentes proporções de FP e FS, foram fornecidas aos camarões durante 28 dias. Os níveis de substituição da FP por FS foram 0 (controle), 12, 24, 36, 48 e 60%. Pós-larvas com peso inicial de 1,22mg (± 0,44) foram distribuídas ao acaso em tanques com 40L de água. A sobrevivência variou entre 70 e 80%, não apresentando diferenças (P>0,05). O peso final variou (P<0,05) de 20,84 a 27,37mg, e a taxa de crescimento específico (TCE) ficou entre 9,1 e 10,7% dia-1. A dieta com 60% de substituição da FP resultou no maior ganho de peso, enquanto a dieta controle resultou em menor ganho de peso. De forma similar, a TCE também foi maior para a dieta 60% e menor para a dieta 0%. A substituição de 60% da FP por FS é recomendada por proporcionar um maior crescimento em pós-larvas do camarão-rosa F. paulensis.

A feeding trial evaluated the replacement of fishmeal by soybean meal in practical diets on the survival and growth of the shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Six iso-energetic and iso-proteic diets were fed to shrimp for 28 days. Replacement levels of fishmeal were 0 (control), 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60%. Post-larvae with mean initial weight of 1.22mg (±0.44) were stocked at random in 40-L tanks. Survival ranged between 70 and 80% and were not different (P>0.05) between treatments. Feeding the diet with 60% of fishmeal replacement resulted in the highest weight gain (P<0.05), while the control diet (no replacement) had the lowest weight gain among all treatments. Similarly, specific growth rate (SGR) was also higher for the 60% diet and lower for the control. Mean final weight ranged from 20.84 to 27.37mg, while SGR varied between 9.1 and 10.7% day-1. The replacement of 60% of fishmeal by soybean meal is recommended in practical diets for F. paulensis as it results in higher weight gain and growth rates, with no effect on survival.

A produção brasileira de camarões vem apresentando um crescimento significativo nos últimos anos, concentrando-se na região nordeste, principal pólo produtor do país. Muito embora as condições climáticas da região Sul não permitam a produção durante todo o ano, uma quantidade considerável de investimentos vem sendo aplicada. No estuário da Lagoa dos Patos, RS, os cultivos da espécie nativa Farfantepenaeus paulensis em cercados e gaiolas e de Litopenaeus vannamei em viveiros estão sendo desenvolvidos como novas atividades, as quais certamente poderão favorecer o desenvolvimento social e econômico da região. Entretanto, a implantação desordenada da carcinicultura pode gerar sérios problemas ambientais. O presente trabalho apresenta uma visão das características ambientais da região em questão e descreve os sistemas de cultivo atualmente utilizados. Além disso, as principais dificuldades enfrentadas por esta nova atividade, assim como a discussão de uma legislação adequada às condições locais e a definição de áreas apropriadas para o cultivo, são apresentadas. Finalmente, o desenvolvimento sustentável da carcinicultura na região é discutido sob as perspectivas social, econômica e ambiental.

Shrimp production in Brazil has presented a significant increase in the last few years, especially in the northeastern region. Although climatic conditions in southern Brazil do not allow year-round production, considerable investments have been made in the region. In the estuarine area of Patos Lagoon, the culture of the native Farfantepenaeus paulensis in cages and pen enclosures, and of Litopenaeus vannamei in earthen ponds are being developed as new activities that will certainly produce social and economical development to the region. Nevertheless, the implantation of shrimp farming without proper ordination and control may generate serious environmental problems. The present paper presents an overview of the environmental characteristics of the area and describes the farming systems currently adopted. Furthermore, the main challenges faced by this new activity, such as the discussion of a legislation adapted to local conditions, and the definition of areas appropriate for farming are presented. Finally, the sustainable development of shrimp farming is discussed under social, economical and environmental perspectives.

Neste trabalho, foi estudada a possibilidade de cultivar o camarão-rosa Farfantepenaeus paulensis em gaiolas com diferentes densidades de estocagem durante o outono (abril a junho) no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos, RS. Juvenis com peso médio de 4,95g (± 1,69 dp foram estocados em gaiolas nas densidades de 20, 40, 80, 100 e 120 ind/m². Os camarões foram alimentados diariamente ad libitum com pedaços de Corvina (Micropogonias furnieri). As sobrevivências e os pesos foram observados nos tempos 20, 40 e 60 dias de experimento. Durante o período de cultivo a temperatura da água decresceu de 24 para 11°C (média = 17,1°C) e a salinidade oscilou entre 3 e 26 (média = 17,5). As taxas de sobrevivência nas densidades de 20, 40, 80, 100 e 120 ind/m² foram 65%, 68%, 46%, 52% e 43,3% respectivamente, sendo significativamente maiores nas densidades de 20 e 40 ind/m². Após 60 dias, os camarões estocados em 20 e 40 ind/m² atingiram peso superior a 8,0g, sendo significativamente maiores (P<0,05) que nos demais tratamentos. A maior biomassa (356g) foi obtida na densidade de 120 ind/m². Foram produzidos de 250 a 350g de camarões com peso médio de 6,5 a 8,0g por m², mesmo em altas densidades de estocagem (40 a 120 ind/m²). As taxas de sobrevivência dos camarões mantidos em 20 e 40 ind/m² podem ser consideradas satisfatórias, contudo, após a temperatura ficar abaixo de 18°C, as taxas de crescimento foram reduzidas. Os resultados confirmam o efeito negativo da densidade de estocagem sobre o crescimento dos camarões, sendo recomendada a estocagem de 40 a 120 juvenis/m². Foi, contudo, comprovada a possibilidade de cultivar F. paulensis durante o outono no sul do Brasil.

In this study, we assessed the feasibility of culturing Farfantepenaeus paulensis in cages at different stocking densities during autumn (from April to June) in the Patos Lagoon estuary. Juveniles with mean weight of 4.95g (± 1.69 SD) were stocked in cages at densities of 20, 40, 80, 100 and 120 ind/m² of bottom. Shrimp were fed daily by-catch items (Micropogonias furnieri) ad libitum. Survival and wet weight were estimated at 20, 40 and 60 days after the beginning of the trial. Water temperature varied from 11 to 24°C (mean = 17.1°C), whiles salinity ranged from 3 to 26 (mean = 17.5). Survival rates at densities of 20, 40, 80, 100 and 120 ind/m² were 65%, 68%, 46%, 52% and 43,3%, respectively, being significantly higher at 20 and 40 ind/m². After 60 days, shrimp stocked at 20 and 40 ind/m² reached over 8.0g, which were significantly higher than those reared at 80, 100 and 120ind/m². The highest biomass (356g/m²) was obtained at 120 shrimp per m². Up to 250 to 350 g of shrimp with mean weight of 6.5 to 8.0g were produced per m² even at the highest stocking densities (40 to 120 ind/m²). Survival rates of shrimp reared at 20 and 40 ind/m² may be considered satisfactory, whereas growth rates where negligible after temperature dropped below 18°C. The present results confirmed the negative effect of stocking density on shrimp growth, being recommended the stocking of at the most 40 to 120 ind/m². Although the feasibility of culturing F. paulensis in cages during autumn in southern Brazil was demonstrated.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência da densidade de estocagem na sobrevivência e no crescimento de pós-larvas de F. paulensis cultivadas em gaiolas durante a fase de berçário. Além disso, foram identificados e quantificados os principais microrganismos presentes no biofilme formado nos substratos artificiais colocados dentro das gaiolas. Foram usadas gaiolas com 4 m² de fundo e com substratos artificiais, nas densidades de 100, 200, 300, 400 e 500PL25 m-2. O experimento durou 35 dias. Observou-se uma relação negativa entre o aumento da densidade de estocagem de camarões e a sobrevivência e o crescimento destes. Foi observada uma preferência pelo consumo de diatomáceas cêntricas. A viabilidade técnica do cultivo de F. paulensis em gaiolas foi confirmada. O cultivo de F. paulensis em gaiolas na fase de berçário pode ser feito em densidades de até 400PL m-2, sem maiores perdas em sua sobrevivência e seu crescimento.

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the stocking density in the survival and growth of FarfantePenaeus paulensis postlarvae reared in cages during the nursery phase. Additionally, we identified and quantified the main microorganisms present on the biofilm formed on artificial substrates placed inside the cages. We used 4 m² bottom surface cages with artificial substrates and shrimp stocking densities of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500PL25 m-2. The experiment lasted for 35 days. A negative relationship was observed between the increase of shrimp stocking density and their survival/growth rates. A preference for centric diatoms was also observed. The technical feasibility of culturing F. paulensis in cages was confirmed. The rearing of F. paulensis in nursery cages may be conduced in densities at also 400PL m-2, without more loss in survival and growth.
