ABSTRACT Ferruginous Rocky Outcrops have high levels of species richness and endemism, but have been threatened by several anthropic actions, especially mining. Eragrostis polytricha, a common grass species in the vegetation of these outcrops, has shown promising features for use in the recovery of mining areas. However, in order to fully understand the species’ potential for such use, its requirements for germination, seed dormancy break and seedling development must be determined. Thus, we aimed to: (1) assess the temperature conditions needed for seeds of E. polytricha to germinate; (2) evaluate the effects of KNO₃ in breaking seed dormancy; and (3) analyze the germination efficiency of seeds that are still in spikelets. The experiment included seven treatments: 15-35 ºC with KNO₃, 20-30 ºC with KNO₃, 15 ºC with KNO₃, 25 ºC with KNO₃, 35 ºC with KNO₃, 20-30 ºC with water, and 20-30 ºC with KNO₃ using spikelets. The treatments with alternating temperatures associated with KNO3 yielded the highest germination rates, suggesting that these two factors combined can break seed dormancy. Seeds inside spikelets exhibited a high germination percentage, and thus represent an interesting alternative for seedling production.

RESUMO Uma das alternativas para se obter espécies potenciais para a revegetação de áreas degradadas é utilizar as que se desenvolvem a partir do banco de sementes de topsoil e nesse contexto, as gramíneas são as mais indicadas por possuírem características associadas à estabilização do solo. Este estudo objetivou avaliar as espécies nativas desenvolvidas em banco de sementes de topsoil ferruginoso e selecionar as gramíneas de maior índice de valor de importância (IVI), considerando-as espécies em potencial para utilização em programas de revegetação. O topsoil foi depositado na Unidade de Pesquisa e Inovação em Campos Rupestres Ferruginosos da Gerdau, Ouro Branco, MG, Brasil e após a germinação e estabelecimento das plantas, realizou-se estudos fitossociológicos. Eragrostis polytricha Nees apresentou maiores valores não apenas de IVI, mas também de Frequência Relativa e Cobertura Relativa, adicionalmente apresentou o segundo maior valor de Densidade Relativa. Portanto, recomendamos E. polytricha para a utilização em programas de revegetação.

ABSTRACT An alternative to find adequate species to revegetate mined sites is surveying the species that develop from the local topsoil seed bank. In that sense, grass species are usually the most indicated ones, as they contribute to stabilizing soil. We aimed to evaluate the native species that would develop from the seed bank of a ferruginous topsoil and select the grass species with highest importance value indexes (IVI’s) for their potential of use in revegetation programs. The evaluated topsoil was deposited in the Gerdau’s Unit for Research and Innovation on Ferruginous Rocky Outcrops at Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, where phytosociological studies were conducted upon seed bank development. Eragrostis polytricha Nees showed highest values not only of IVI but also of relative frequency and relative cover, in addition to the second highest value of relative density. Thus, we recommend E. polytricha as a potential species for being used in revegetation programs.

ABSTRACT (Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae (Poaceae) in the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais State, Brazil). We aimed to study floristic and morphologically the species of the basal subfamilies Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae (Poaceae) occurring in the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), the largest remnant of the Atlantic Rainforest in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Monthly expeditions to collect botanical material were carried out over 15 months (February to June 1998, and March 1999 to February 2000) along previously established trails. After the identification, voucher specimens were deposited in the PERD and VIC Herbaria. Analytical keys and diagnostic descriptions for all collected genera and species are presented, as well as data about the geographical distribution of the species. In addition, major diagnostic characters are illustrated. As a result, two genera and five species were collected. The Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae species collected from PERD correspond to 50% of all species described for these subfamilies, which highlights the importance of the PERD as a refuge.

RESUMO Este trabalho consiste em um estudo florístico das espécies de Merostachys Spreng. (Bambusoideae: Arthrostylidiinae) ocorrentes na Mata Atlântica do Estado de Minas Gerais, e foi realizado com base em coletas de material botânico em Unidades de Conservação e propriedades particulares, além da análise de espécimes depositados em herbários nacionais e estrangeiros. Foram catalogados 22 táxons. Merostachys leptophylla e M. calderoniana foram registradas no Estado pela primeira vez no presente estudo; M. tatianae, M. espessa, M. fimbriolaminata, M. ramosa e M. ximenae são, até agora, registradas apenas para o Estado de Minas Gerais. São apresentadas chave de identificação, descrições e ilustrações, bem como comentários sobre morfologia, ciclo reprodutivo, habitat e distribuição geográfica das espécies.

ABSTRACT This work consists of a floristic survey of the Merostachys species (Bambusoideae: Arthrostylidiinae) from the Atlantic Forest of Minas Gerais State. It is based on collections of botanical material in Conservation Units and private properties, and on the analysis of specimens from national and foreign herbaria. Twenty-two taxa were cataloged. Merostachys leptophylla and M. calderoniana were recorded for the first time in the state; M. tatianae, M. espessa, M. fimbriolaminata, M. ramosa and M. ximenae are, to date, registered only for Minas Gerais. An identification key to the cataloged taxa, illustrations and comments about morphology, reproductive cycle, habitat and geographic distribution are presented.

RESUMO Polinizadores são extremamente importantes em cultivos agrícolas, pois o seu déficit pode afetar a produção de alimentos no mundo. Sendo assim, estudos têm enfatizado a importância do conhecimento sobre a biologia desses agentes. Dentre as espécies olerícolas mais importantes economicamente, destaca-se o tomate. Assim, este estudo objetivou identificar os potenciais polinizadores de Solanum lycopersicum em uma área de cultivo convencional no sudeste do Estado de Minas Gerais; identificar quais destes são mais representativos, verificar a importância da sua ação na qualidade dos frutos produzidos e discutir práticas para a conservação desses agentes. Foram encontrados 15 visitantes florais, sendo Exomalopsis analis o mais representativo. Apis mellifera e Trigona spinipes, mesmo não sendo abelhas vibradoras, também atuaram como polinizadores de Solanum lycopersicum.

ABSTRACT Pollinators are extremely important in agricultural crops because their deficit can affect food production in the world. Consequently, a lot of studies have been emphasizing the importance of the knowledge about the biology of these agents. The tomato stands out among the economically most important crops. Therefore, the objectives of this work were: to identify the pollinators of Solanum lycopersicum in a conventional area of cultivation in the southeast of Minas Gerais State and detect which of these are more representative; to assess the importance of the pollinators' action for the quality of the fruits produced; and discuss practices for conservation to these agents. Fifteen floral visitors were found, with Exomalopsis analis being the most representative. Apis mellifera and Trigona spinipes, although not vibrating bees, also acted as pollinators of Solanum lycopersicum.

RESUMO O presente estudo consiste em um levantamento florístico dos bambus lenhosos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Bambuseae) ocorrentes no Município de Viçosa, Zona da Mata mineira. Foram realizadas expedições a fragmentos florestais no Município, no período de fevereiro/2011 a março/2015. São reconhecidos nove táxons pertencentes a dois gêneros Chusquea (duas spp.) e Merostachys (sete spp.). São apresentadas chaves de identificação, descrições, comentários sobre os táxons levantados e o estado de conservação de cada espécie é examinado. É registrada, pela primeira vez, a ocorrência de Merostachys skvortzovii para o Estado de Minas Gerais. Merostachys tatianae, espécie até agora considerada endêmica para o Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, é registrada como ocorrente em outra localidade no Estado. O presente estudo evidencia uma alta diversidade de espécies de Bambuseae na área estudada.

ABSTRACT This study is a floristic survey of the woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Bambuseae) in Viçosa, Zona da Mata Mineira. Field research was conducted from February/2011 to March/2015. Nine taxa were recognized belonging to two genera Chusquea (two spp.) and Merostachys (seven spp.). Identification keys, descriptions and comments on the studied taxa are provided and the conservation status of each species is examined. Merostachys skvortzovii is recorded for Minas Gerais State for the first time. Merostachys tatianae, previously considered endemic to Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, is here recorded for another locality in Minas Gerais State. This study recorded a high diversity of Bambuseae in the studied area.
