RESUMO A enfermidade ectima contagioso está difundida em todo o estado de São Paulo. Foram amostrados 42 (8,64%) cuidadores de animais e 444 (91,36%) ovinos (n=486). A prevalência de reagentes para vírus-neutralização foi de 67% (IC95%=62-71%) nos ovinos, e em seus cuidadores de 76% (IC95%=63-89%), sendo P=0,22, ou seja, não houve diferença estatística significativa entre as espécies. A distribuição dos títulos teve diferença estatística significativa entre as espécies, com P=0,0048. As variações de titulação foram de 0,6 a 2,1 tanto nos ovinos quanto nos seus cuidadores. Dentre os 42 cuidadores de ovinos participantes do estudo, 32 apresentaram títulos de anticorpos expressos por log10 acima de 0,6.

ABSTRACT These diseases are all widespread in the State of São Paulo. 42 (8.64%) animal caregivers and 444 (91.36%) sheep (n=486) were sampled. The reagents Prevalence paragraph virus neutralization was 67% (95% CI = 62-71%) in sheep and 76% (95% CI = 63-89%) for caregivers, with P=0.22 not being a statistically significant difference between the species. One of the distribution titles had significant difference between statistics as species with P=0.0048. The titration variations were 0.6 to 2.1, both in sheep and their caregivers. Among the 42 sheep caregivers participating in the study, 32 had antibody securities denominated in log10 above 0.6.

INTRODUCTION Globally, older adults are a population group that often suffers abuse by their caregivers. Along with women and children, they are among those most often reported as victims of abuse of any kind in Cuba. OBJECTIVES Characterize presence of domestic abuse of older adults in family doctor-and-nurse office No. 28 of the Carlos Manuel Portuondo University Polyclinic in Havana, Cuba, determining the main manifestations of abuse and help-seeking behavior by the older adults identified as victims. METHODS This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of adults aged ≥60 years; all those not diagnosed with dementia and who agreed to participate were interviewed. In a universe of 268 older adults, 29 were living outside the area, 24 declined to participate, and 18 had a diagnosis of dementia, leaving a study population of 197 individuals. Variables included: personal experience of abuse, type of abuse, perpetrator, help sought, and reasons for not seeking help. Statistical analysis was based on percentages. RESULTS Of 197 older adults interviewed, 88 (44.7%) reported that they were victims of domestic abuse; 50 of these were women. The most common types of abuse were psychological abuse and disrespect for personal space, reported by 69 (78.4%) and 54 (61.4%) individuals, respectively. Sons- and daughters-in-law were identified as the abusers by 68 participants and grandchildren by 65. Of the 88 victims, 67 (76.1%) stated that they did not seek help. CONCLUSIONS The finding that substantial numbers of older adults are victims of domestic abuse brings to light a hitherto insufficiently addressed issue in the community studied. More research is needed to deepen understanding of the scope and causes of the problem to inform prevention and management strategies, not only at the level of the polyclinic catchment area, but in the health system in general.

Tephra fall deposits and one large ignimbrite close to Chaitén and Michinmahuida Volcanoes were analyzed for chemistry and radiocarbon dated to correlate the eruptive units and establish the timing of eruptions. These data suggest that both volcanoes were the source of large (VEI ≥5) and small to moderate (VEI <5) explosive eruptions throughout the Holocene. Four deposits are associated with volcanic activity from Chaitén Volcano, with two from Plinian eruptions at 9.9-9.5 and 5.3-4.9 (cal) ka BP that also generated pyroclastic density currents. The last event recognized from Chaitén (prior 2008) occurred a few hundred years ago, producing deposits that are similar to those of the 2008 eruption. All products from Chaitén are high-silica rhyolites; whole-rock compositions are indistinguishable but glass compositions are subtly different for some of the units. Seven deposits are related to eruptions of Michinmahuida Volcano, including a Plinian fall deposit at 7.6-7.3 ka BP and a large ignimbrite deposit at 10.5-10.2 ka BP. The chemical compositions of these products range from andesite to dacite. The last substantial explosive eruption event from Michinmahuida Volcano appears to have been a 0.5-0.3 ka BP sub-Plinian eruption, although younger scoria fall deposits likely derived from local pyroclastic cones are also found. Both volcanoes pose a wide variety of potential hazards to the region ranging from those derived from ignimbrite-forming eruptions to pyroclastic-cone formation. Valleys adjacent to the volcanoes were the areas most heavily affected by volcanic activity, because they were inundated by pyroclastic density currents and lahars. However, even regions located tens of kilometers east and north of the volcanoes experienced accumulations of tephra, which could harm both agriculture and infrastructure if similar events occurred today.

En las cercanías de los volcanes Chaitén y Michinmahuida se han estudiado un conjunto de depósitos piroclásticos de caída y un depósito ignimbrítico. Estos se han caracterizado mediante análisis químico (de roca total y microsonda en vidrio volcánico) y datados por medio de isótopos de radiocarbono. De esta forma, se ha establecido una nueva cronología eruptiva para estos centros. Los datos obtenidos sugieren que ambos volcanes presentan conspicua actividad explosiva durante el Holoceno de variada magnitud. En particular, se han identificado depósitos de al menos cuatro erupciones asociadas al volcán Chaitén, incluyendo dos Plinianos ocurridas entre 9.9-9.5 y 5.3-4.9 ka antes del presente, que generaron, además, corrientes piroclásticas en los valles adyacentes. El evento más reciente identificado para este volcán, corresponde a una erupción de similar magnitud a la del 2008 y habría ocurrido unos tres siglos antes del presente. Para este volcán, todos sus productos piroclásticos corresponden a riolitas, cuyas composiciones de roca total resultan prácticamente indistinguibles, aunque análisis del vidrio volcánico muestra diferencias. Por otra parte, siete erupciones han sido identificadas para el volcán Michinmahuida, incluyendo un depósito ignimbrítico emplazado en el Holoceno temprano entre 10.5-10.2 ka antes del presente y una erupción Pliniana ocurrida entre de 7.6-7.3 ka antes del presente. Las composiciones de los piroclastos de este volcán varían desde andesitas a dacitas, y la últma erupción habría correspondido a una del tipo subpliniana ocurrida hace unos 500 años; no obstante, se han identificado depósitos más recientes probablemente derivados de la actividad de conos piroclásticos. En suma, ambos volcanes representan potencial peligro en la región, cuyas zonas más afectadas corresponderían a los valles adyacentes a los volcanes, ya sea por corrientes piroclásticas o lahares. Sin embargo, regiones distantes decenas de kilómetros, particularmente hacia el norte y este de los volcanes, han experimentado acumulaciones importantes de tefra, cuyos efectos serían devastadores si eventos de similar magnitud ocurrieran en el futuro.

Conjunction errors were studied in two types of prediction tasks that implied different notions of probability: fictional and realistic (Teigen, Martinussen & Lund, 1996). In the present study, 83 students of Psychology of the University of Buenos Aires were asked to evaluate the probability of Argentina winning the first three matches of the World Soccer Cup 2006 (realistic) and Linda's problem (Tversky & Kahneman, 1983). The differences found in the amount of errors between the two tasks were highly significant. Conjunction errors were reduced by judgments that involve realistic contents. Such findings indicate the relevance of considering socio ecological factors in probabilistic reasoning (Hertwig & Gigerenzer, 1999) as well as in didactic strategies.

El error de conjunción (Tversky & Kahneman, 1983) se estudió en dos escenarios de probabilidad que suponen distintos contenidos en las tareas a resolver: ficcional y realista (Teigen, Martinussen & Lund, 1996). Participaron voluntariamente 83 sujetos de ambos sexos, alumnos de Psicología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, quienes resolvieron ambas tareas. Las diferencias halladas en las cantidades de errores de conjunción al comparar las ejecuciones en los dos escenarios fueron altamente significativas. Los resultados reflejan una disminución de los errores cuando se presentan tareas realistas en lugar de ficcionales. Tales hallazgos indican la relevancia de considerar elementos socioecológicos tanto en razonamientos probabilísticos (Hertwig & Gigerenzer, 1999) como en las estrategias didácticas de enseñanza de probabilidad.

Realizou-se estudo transversal com 60 pacientes (9,9 ± 1,8 anos) com hipotireoidismo congênito (HC) (grupo A): 40 meninas (23 pré-púberes) e 20 meninos (18 pré-púberes), com grupo controle (grupo B) constituído por 28 indivíduos (10,4 ± 2,1 anos): 18 meninas (8 pré-púberes) e 10 meninos (9 pré-púberes). OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a densidade (DMO) e o conteúdo mineral ósseo (CMO) e correlacioná-los com idade cronológica e óssea (IO), sexo, maturação sexual, dose de l-T4, TSH, TT4, FT4, e etiologia do HC. IO, DMO e CMO de corpo total (DXA) foram obtidos dos 2 grupos; TSH, TT4 e FT4, apenas dos pacientes. DMO foi menor no grupo A (0,795 ± 0,075 g/cm² vs. 0,832 ± 0,092; p = 0,04) e maior nas meninas púberes do que nas pré-púberes (p = 0,004). Não houve diferença significativa de DMO e CMO quanto ao sexo e etiologia do HC. Nosso estudo mostra que a DMO foi significativamente menor no grupo com HC, diferente dos dados da literatura.

A cross sectional study was made on 60 patients (9.9 ± 1.8 yr-old) with congenital hypothyroidism (CH) (group A): 40 girls (23 prepubertal) and 20 boys (18 prepubertal). Control group (group B) was constituted of 28 healthy children (10.4 ± 2.1 yr-old): 18 girls (8 prepubertal) and 10 boys (9 prepubertal). AIMS: To evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) and content (BMC) and to correlate them with chronological and bone age (BA), sex, sexual maturation, l-T4 dose, TSH, TT4, FT4, and CH etiology. BA, total body BMD, and BMC (DXA) were obtained of both groups. TSH, TT4, and FT4 were measured in patients only. BMD was lower in group A (0.795 ± 0.075 g/cm² vs. 0.832 ± 0.092; p = 0.04) and higher in pubertal than in prepubertal girls (p = 0.004). There was no significant difference between BMD and BMC related to sex and CH etiology. Our data demonstrated that BMD was significantly lower in children with CH, different from what has been published in the literature.
