Selenium-containing compounds exhibit diverse biological activities, such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cancer preventive effects. Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism, we assessed the toxicity, neuroprotective, antioxidant properties, and impact on longevity of 11 selenoacetylenes. Their toxicity and bioactivities varied based on molecular structure. Selenoacetylenes with butyl substituents were toxic to Galleria mellonella larvae. The presence of but-3-in-2-ol radical increased antiprotozoal activity against Tetrahymena pyriformis. Compared to the positive control (Nimitz® EC), selenoacetylenes were less toxic to nematode worms and eggs. Selenoacetylenes significantly reduced amyloid beta (Aβ) paralysis in C. elegans CL4176 worms, increased longevity by 18 to 22%, along with improving survival after oxidative or thermal stress. Galantamine, showed inferior results. These findings enhance our understanding of selenoacetylenes on neuroprotection, antioxidant activity, and longevity in C. elegans. Future mammalian studies will further elucidate mechanisms and explore the potential therapeutic use of selenoacetylenes in treating Alzheimer’s disease and longevity. The microwave-assisted interesterification of babassu oil with methyl, ethyl and butyl acetates was carried out via acid catalysis, using sulfuric, phosphoric, methanesulfonic and acetic acids for the production of biodiesel with triacetin as an additive. Dielectric measurements in the range of 0.3 to 13 GHz of pure reactants and reactions media lead to a clear understanding of the interaction between the medium and microwave irradiation, allowing achieving optimal conditions in terms of microwave power, kind and catalyst concentration, reactant molar ratios, and temperatures. Using ethyl acetate, reactions were carried out at various oil to acetate molar ratio (1:12 to 1:72) using sulfuric acid (0.5% m/mT) as a catalyst. For 1:60 molar ratio, the experiments were carried out with 0.5 to 2% m/mT sulfuric acid. The aim of this work was to identify and quantify the metabolites present in the roots of Combretum lanceolatum inoculated with its endophytic fungi. The metabolomics was accomplished using the 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral data and evaluated via rNMR software and Madison Metabolomics Consortium Database (MMCD). The principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed that plants inoculated with Trichoderma spirale (Ts) present differentiation and discrimination over the time compared to control. Seven days after Ts fungal inoculation, 15 metabolites were identified at different concentrations comparing to the control plants. The plants inoculated with Ts fungus present the metabolites spermidine and pantothenate in higher concentrations and 3-hydroxybutyric acid and b-alanine in lower concentrations compared to control plants, indicating any response to biotic stress. These metabolites are involved in various plant processes, including secondary metabolites biosynthesis, energy metabolism and self-defense. This study investigated the chemical composition, immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities, and histopathological analysis of mice tissues treated with methanolic extract from R. marina poison. Marinobufagin, telecinobufagin and bufalin were identified in the chemical profile. The biochemical results demonstrated an effect between doses in the period of 7 days, an immunomodulatory effect was observed regarding the production capacity of interleukin (IL)-12p70 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α at 7 and 30 days, respectively. The lower dose suggests better bioactivity to the treated animal than the higher dose. Histopathological analyses of the lung, heart, kidney and liver showed tissue damage in all organs, mainly in the lung, and were proportional to the dose and the treatment period. We observed that the treatment modulated cytokine production, and therefore this effect may be related to the tissue damage observed. This study demonstrates a positive effect in the antioxidant and immune system, indicating that the molecules found in the extract have biotechnological potential.

The aim of this study was to develop and characterize a Brazil nut oil microemulsion system and determine the effect of this microemulsion on the superoxide release in human phagocytes. The microemulsion was formulated using distilled water, Brazil nut as the oily phase, Sorbitan monooleate, Polysorbate 80, and butan-1-ol. Hydrophile-lipophile balance of Brazil nut oil was determined, pseudoternary diagrams were prepared, and microemulsion diagram regions were preselected. Preliminary and accelerated stability tests, rheological characterization and dynamic light scattering were performed. The immunomodulatory effect of the microemulsion on the interactions with leukocytes was determined by superoxide release. The developed formulations were classified as oil-in-water, showed a Newtonian profile, with linear viscosity and droplet sizes of 46.9; 66.5 and 34.3 nm. When we assessed the interaction of the microemulsion of Brazil nut oil with phagocytes, we observed an increase in superoxide release. Our findings indicate that the developed formulation improved the immunomodulatory activity of the Brazil nut oil, proving to be a natural product option for future applications, in particular for infectious diseases.
