Recessões são eventos recorrentes nos quais a maioria das empresas sofre impactos severos enquanto outras são menos afetadas ou até prosperam. A gestão estratégica tem feito pouco progresso para entender tais diferenças de desempenho. Em um cenário de demanda reduzida, competição aumentada e muitas incertezas, a maioria das empresas tenta sobreviver cortando custos e investimentos, de maneira pró-cíclica. Mas as empresas poderiam aproveitar os recursos subestimados no mercado para investir, contra-ciclicamente, em novas oportunidades de negócios para superar a concorrência. Pesquisamos empresas brasileiras em várias indústrias sobre a recessão de 2008-2009 e analisamos dados usando PLS-SEM. Descobrimos que enquanto a maioria das empresas reduzem custos e investimento pró-ciclicamente durante as recessões, uma estratégia contra-cíclica de investir em oportunidades criadas pelas mudanças no mercado possibilitam desempenho superior. Firmas com propensão a reconhecer oportunidades, com orientação empresarial para investir e com flexibilidade para implementar os investimentos de modo eficiente são as mais bem sucedidas.

Recessions are recurring events in which most firms suffer severe impacts while others are less affected or may even prosper. Strategic management has made little progress in understanding such performance differences. In a scenario of decreased demand, intensified competition, and higher uncertainty, most firms try to survive by pro-cyclically cutting costs and investments. But firms could take advantage of undervalued resources in the market to counter-cyclically invest in new business opportunities to overtake competitors. We survey Brazilian firms in various industries about the 2008-2009 recession and analyze data using PLS-SEM. We find that while most firms pro-cyclically reduce costs and investments in recessions, a counter-cyclical strategy of investing in opportunities created by changes in the market enables superior performance. Most successful are firms with a propensity to recognize opportunities, an entrepreneurial orientation to invest, and the flexibility to efficiently implement investments.

Las recesiones son eventos recurrentes en los cuales la mayoría de las empresas sufre impactos severos mientras que otras son menos afectadas o incluso, hasta prosperan. La gestión estratégica ha tenido poco progreso para entender tales diferencias de desempeño. En un escenario de demanda reducida, mayor competencia y muchas incertidumbres, la mayoría de las empresas intenta sobrevivir recortando costos e inversiones, de manera procíclica. Pero las empresas podrían aprovechar los recursos subestimados en el mercado para invertir, contra cíclicamente, en nuevas oportunidades de negocios para superar a la competencia. Estudiamos empresas brasileñas en varias industrias sobre la recesión de 2008-2009 y analizamos datos usando PLS-SEM. Descubrimos que mientras que la mayoría de las empresas reducen costos e inversiones procíclicamente durante las recesions, una estrategia contra cíclica de inversor en oportunidades creadas por los cambios en el mercado hacen posible un desempeño mayor. Firmas con propensión a reconocer oportunidades, con orientación empresarial para invertir y con flexibilidad para implementar las inversiones de modo eficiente son las más exitosas.

Este estudo parte da premissa teórica de que firmas obtêm lucros extraordinários quando exploram imperfeições de mercado. Imperfeições são tratadas como variáveis causais para identificar configurações de empresas de alto desempenho listadas na BM&FBovespa entre 2005 e 2009. O estudo, qualitativo comparativo, adota uma metodologia replicável, a saber: (a) análise categorial de conteúdo semântico de relatórios emitidos por Corretoras de Valores sobre as empresas selecionadas; e (b) análise dos dados através da abordagem MDSO (Most Different Similar Outcome) da Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). A metodologia permite tratar causalidade complexa com pouco número de casos. Neste estudo, possibilitou reduzir dezenove variáveis a poucas causas comuns e conjuntamente necessárias ao desempenho de quinze empresas. Os resultados mostram três configurações alternativas ao alto desempenho. A primeira é formada por poucas imperfeições exploradas por concessões de serviços públicos. A segunda, por sua vez, é formada por empresas exclusivas, que fabricam bens com demanda crescente, heterogêneos e diferenciáveis. A terceira configuração faz-se por empresas gigantes, que fabricam e comercializam produtos com demanda inelástica e generalizada. Acumulam ativos que raramente se tornam obsoletos, formando poderosos monopólios ou oligopólios mundiais.

The objective of this work was to explore the theoretical premise that companies are able to obtain extraordinary profit levels by exploiting market imperfections. To this end, market imperfections are treated as causal variables in order to identify organizational configurations of high-performing companies listed on the Brazilian BM&FBovespa securities, commodities and futures exchange between 2005 and 2009. The research methodology combines (a) MDSO (Most Different Similar Outcome) approach of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to find organizational configurations with (b) Semantic and Categorical Content Analysis for exploring reports produced by stock broking firms about the companies of interest. This approach allows for analysis of complex causality even with a small number of cases. Nineteen variables responsible for the high performance of fifteen companies were able to be attributed to only a few common causalities. Results show three alternative configurations of market imperfections for attaining high performance. The first configuration combines few market imperfections exploited by government regulated companies. The second configuration is composed of exclusive companies producing differentiated, heterogeneous products for high demand markets. The third configuration contains oversize companies producing commodities characterized by their almost inelastic demand. Their low obsolescence rate of assets generates powerful local monopolies and global oligopolies.

Este trabalho, de cunho teórico, tem como principal objetivo analisar a relação entre sustentabilidade e inovação, tendo como referencial a teoria institucional. Para tanto, o artigo inicialmente analisa a questão do desenvolvimento sustentável, a partir de uma dimensão histórica da evolução do tema. A seguir, é explorada a temática da institucionalização do desenvolvimento sustentável, sugerindo-se que a proeminência do desenvolvimento sustentável pode ser explicado pela teoria institucional, mais especificamente pelo conceito de eficiência simbólica de Meyer e Rowan (1991). O artigo então discute o conceito de organizações inovadoras sustentáveis. Por fim, é abordada a relação entre sustentabilidade e inovação, destacando a importância de a empresa inovar considerando as três dimensões da sustentabilidade - social, ambiental e econômica.

This theoretical paper has as main objective to analyze the relation between sustainability and innovation, taking as reference the institutional theory. Thus, the paper initially examines the issue of sustainable development, from a historical dimension of evolution of the topic. After that, we explored the theme of institutionalization of sustainable development, suggesting that the prominence of sustainable development can be explained by institutional theory, more specifically by the concept of symbolic efficiency of Meyer and Rowan (1991). The paper then analyzes the concept of sustainable innovative organizations. Finally, the relationship between sustainability and innovation is analyzed, highlighting the importance that the company innovates considering the three dimensions of sustainability - social, environmental and economic.

Este trabajo de carácter teórico tiene como principal objetivo analizar la relación entre la sostenibilidad y la innovación, tomando como referencia la teoría institucional. Para ello, el artículo inicialmente analiza la cuestión del desarrollo sostenible, desde una dimensión histórica de la evolución del tema. A continuación, es explorada la temática de la institucionalización del desarrollo sostenible, lo que sugiere que la importancia del desarrollo sostenible puede ser explicada por la teoría institucional, más específicamente por el concepto de eficiencia simbólica de Meyer y Rowan (1991). Luego, el artículo discute el concepto de organizaciones innovadoras sostenibles. Por último, se aborda la relación entre sostenibilidad e innovación, destacando la importancia de que la empresa innove considerando las tres dimensiones de la sostenibilidad - social, ambiental y económica.

Firms exhibit a wide variability in growth rates. This can be seen as another manifestation of the fact that firms are different from one another in several respects. This study investigated this variability using the variance components technique previously used to decompose the variance of financial performance. The main source of variation in growth rates, responsible for more than 40% of total variance, corresponds to individual, idiosyncratic firm aspects and not to industry, country, or macroeconomic conditions prevailing in specific years. Firm growth, similar to financial performance, is mostly unique to specific firms and not an industry or country related phenomenon. This finding also justifies using growth as an alternative outcome of superior firm resources and as a complementary dimension of competitive advantage. This also links this research with the resource-based view of strategy. Country was the second source of variation with around 10% of total variance. The analysis was done using the Compustat Global database with 80,320 observations, comprising 13,221 companies in 47 countries, covering the years of 1994 to 2002. It also compared the variance structure of growth to the variance structure of financial performance in the same sample

Sometimes organizations described as benevolent, focusing on stable procedures and cordial relations are regarded as examples of collective indolence and likely to be out-competed by aggressive, merciless and stress-prone organizations. In this paper we suggest that some managers and organizations follow a requisite stress principle, according to which stress inside organizations is treated as a variable to be equated to the stress level perceived to prevail in the institutionalized environment the organization operates. We thus predict the relationship between stress-inducing practices, individual responses and performance to be recursively explained. When organizations induce stress at levels that are different from those admitted institutionally as normal levels, there will be a negative response to this induction. When induced stress levels are considered excessive, activities will be inhibited because fear will control the capacity of people to deal with situations and act in an appropriate manner. The validity of this principle implies that control of stress in organizations is as complex as the level of stress in society: it will depend on the control of stress levels coming from society. The principle consequently puts an end to any management aspirations to use stress as a managing mechanism and for inducing behavior.

Are sources of economic rent, as defined by the prevalent business strategy paradigm, sufficient to attain and maintain superior returns? The perspective developed within the conceptual framework of the Institutional Theory may offer managers a contribution towards understanding the strategy process and its potentialities, particularly by stressing the leading role played by legitimacy, the influence of many institutional spheres, the isomorphic pressures, ceremonial behavior and decoupling, among other elements, that mainstream business strategy fails to address directly, but which may have a significant effect on firm performance. We advance that these elements must be accounted for in the pursuit and acquisition of economic rents, even if the ability to articulate them purposefully is constrained by rationality, agency conditions and the manager's social embeddedness.

As fontes de rendas econômicas, tais como definidas no referencial predominante em estratégia empresarial, são suficientes para a obtenção e manutenção de retornos superiores pelas empresas? O referencial desenvolvido no arcabouço conceitual da Teoria Institucional pode contribuir com os gestores na compreensão do processo da estratégia e suas possibilidades, especialmente por destacar o papel central da legitimidade, a influência de múltiplas esferas institucionais, as pressões por isomorfismo, o comportamento cerimonial e o decoupling, dentre outros elementos, que não são diretamente endereçados pelo mainstream de Estratégia Empresarial, mas que podem afetar significativamente o desempenho das firmas. Propõe-se que esses elementos precisam ser considerados na busca e obtenção de rendas econômicas, ainda que a capacidade de articulá-los intencionalmente esteja limitada pela racionalidade, condição de agência e imersão social do gestor.

Este artigo contribui para as discussões sobre o papel da gestão de pessoas nos processos de mudança organizacional, mostrando como a adoção de determinadas orientações podem diminuir os efeitos da polarização perceptiva entre o passado e o futuro que é uma das causas dos fenômenos de resistência à mudança e estresse nos processos de mudança organizacional. Para isso, associam-se as temáticas da administração das mudanças organizacionais e da gestão de pessoas, analisadas em uma perspectiva dialética da evolução. Discute-se o paradoxo entre as dimensões "passado" e "futuro" nas organizações e os seus efeitos no que se refere à gestão das mudanças. Analisa-se um estudo de caso com o objetivo de avançar a discussão do modelo transformacional de gestão de pessoas, mostrando como os efeitos do paradoxo "passado versus futuro" foram evitados em uma organização que implementou mudanças por meio de estratégias adaptativas por meio das quais os indivíduos puderam utilizar os meios de ação e cognição desenvolvidos na estrutura organizacional anterior para se identificar e se engajar em um novo projeto de organização.

We intend to contribute to the discussions of the role of people management in the processes of organizational changes, showing that the adoption of certain premises of people management has the potential for decreasing the effects of "past versus future paradox", one of the causes of resistance to change and stress in change processes. For that, we associate in this article the themes of change management and people management, analyzed in a dialectical perspective of social evolution. We discuss the paradox constituted by the "past" and "future" dimensions of reality and its effects related to the management of changes. Through a case study, we advance the discussions of the Transformational Model of Human Resources Management, showing how an organization managed to avoid the effects of the paradox discussed implementing changes through adaptive strategies, through which the individual used the means of action and cognition developed in the previous organizational structure to be identified and engaged with the building of a new organization.
