Abstract Commercial dry food (CDF) for dogs is a whole grain ration thoroughly mixed and die-cut with heat and pressure to give it the shape of kibble. CDF is formulated with several agro-industrial ingredients and by-products of agricultural and livestock origin. Contamination by Aspergillus flavus and aflatoxins (AFs) in foods has been shown to be a global problem that causes harm to human and animal health. The objective was to evaluate the presence of fungal microbiota and contamination by AFs in CDF. A random sample (n= 77) of marketed CDF was selected in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The samples were processed and cultured by serial dilutions, obtaining monosporic isolates, which were characterized morphologically, toxigenically (HPLC), and molecularly (PCR). The concentration of AFs in CDF was quantified by HPLC. Fungal growth was observed in 53.2 % of CDF, and 7.8 % exceeded the maximum permissible limit (MPL=106 CFU/g). The genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, Mucor, Alternaria, and Fusarium were found (69.4, 12.9, 9.4, 4.7, 1.7, and 1.1 %, respectively). All CDF samples showed contamination by AFs (14.8 ± 0.3 μg/kg), and 11.8 % exceeded the MPL (20.0 μg/kg) suggested by the regulations; contamination was significantly associated (P<0.05) with some ingredients used, CDF moisture, and inclusion of fungicides and sequestrants. The results obtained suggest that the CDF manufacturing process does not wholly eliminate contamination by fungi or by the AFs present in the ingredients used for its formulation; consequently, these remain in the finished product, putting at risk the health of dogs and the efficacy of the food chain.

Resumen El alimento comercial seco (ACS) para perro es una ración integral completamente mezclada y troquelada con calor y presión para darle forma de croqueta. El ACS está formulado con diversos ingredientes y subproductos agroindustriales de origen agrícola y pecuario. La contaminación por Aspergillus flavus y por aflatoxinas (AFs) en los alimentos se ha demostrado que es un problema global que causa daños a la salud humana y animal. El objetivo fue evaluar la presencia de microbiota fúngica y contaminación por AFs en el ACS. Una muestra aleatoria (n=77) de ACS comercializado se seleccionó en Aguascalientes, México. Las muestras fueron procesadas y cultivadas por diluciones seriadas, obteniendo aislados monospóricos, los cuales se caracterizaron morfológica, toxigénica (HPLC) y molecularmente (PCR). La concentración de AFs en ACS se cuantificó por HPLC. En el 53.2 % de ACS se observó crecimiento fúngico y 7.8 % superaron el límite máximo permisible (LMP=106 UFC/g). Se encontraron los géneros Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, Mucor, Alternaria y Fusarium (69.4, 12.9, 9.4, 4.7, 1.7 y 1.1%, respectivamente). Todas las muestras de ACS mostraron contaminación por AFs (14.8 ± 0.3 µg/kg) y el 11.8 % excedió el LMP (20.0 µg/kg) sugerido por la normatividad; la contaminación se asoció significativamente (P<0.05) con algunos ingredientes empleados, humedad del ACS e inclusión de fungicidas y secuestrantes. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que el proceso de elaboración del ACS no elimina completamente la contaminación por hongos ni por las AFs presentes en los ingredientes empleados para su formulación; en consecuencia, éstos permanecen en el producto terminado poniendo en riesgo la salud de los perros y eficacia de la cadena alimenticia.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate epidemiological and pathological reports of confirmed outbreaks and cases of zoo, farm, and pet animals naturally infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Confirmed reports of outbreaks and cases of SARS-CoV-2 infected animals were obtained by systematically researching and analyzing information available in open access databases. The reports were evaluated, incorporated into a database, classified, and integrated to estimate average morbidity and mortality values and characteristic clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 in animals. Postmortem lesions and microscopic alterations are also included. Diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives to confirm or mitigate infection in animals are outlined. Finally, control methods include isolation, culling of affected populations, and the development of the first available vaccines for animals. Available information suggests that domestic and zoo animals have become accidental hosts of SARS-CoV-2, becoming infected primarily through contact with COVID-19 affected humans; although there is concern that animals could become a risk for maintaining and spreading new mutant variants of the virus, which could eventually return to human populations.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los informes epidemiológicos y patológicos de brotes y casos confirmados de la enfermedad por SARS-CoV-2 en animales de zoológico, granja y mascota infectados naturalmente. Se obtuvieron informes de brotes y casos de animales infectados por SARS-CoV-2 mediante búsqueda, análisis y clasificación sistemática de información disponible en bases de datos de libre acceso. Los informes se evaluaron e incorporaron a una base de datos, se clasificaron e integraron para identificar los valores característicos de morbilidad, mortalidad y manifestaciones clínicas del SARS-CoV-2 en animales; además de lesiones post mortem y alteraciones microscópicas. Se indican alternativas diagnósticas y terapéuticas para confirmar o mitigar la infección en animales; métodos de control como el aislamiento, sacrificio de poblaciones afectadas y las primeras vacunas disponibles para animales. La información disponible sugiere que los animales se han convertido en huéspedes accidentales del SARSCoV-2, infectándose principalmente a través del contacto con personas afectadas por COVID-19; aunque existe la preocupación de que los animales podrían convertirse en un riesgo de mantenimiento y propagación de nuevas variantes virales, que eventualmente podrían volver a las poblaciones humanas

RESUMEN: El pollo doméstico es una especie de ave que ha sido ampliamente estudiada en cuanto a su biología y como organismo modelo para la ciencia. La reproducción de la especie es por la puesta de huevos fecundados, que en un período de 21 días desarrollarán un polluelo en su interior. Se han descrito varios métodos para desarrollar embriones ex-ovo, permitiendo la observación y manipulación del organismo. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo estandarizar un método que permita el desarrollo de los embriones dentro del sistema de incubación artificial, el cual tiene un bajo costo y es fácil de realizar. En este trabajo se utilizaron 100 huevos de gallina para estudiar los efectos de la humedad, la suplementación mineral y el tiempo de preincubación del huevo sobre la incubación ex-ovo de los embriones. El desarrollo embrionario se documentó a través de los diferentes días. Se seleccionó la cáscara de huevo pulverizada como una fuente óptima para proporcionar calcio, magnesio, fósforo y otros minerales al embrión en desarrollo. Al suministrar 900-1200 mg de cáscara de huevo pulverizada, 40 mL de la solución de cloruro de benzalconio al 0.001 % y un tiempo de preincubación de aproximadamente 56 h, los embriones lograron desarrollarse hasta los 19 días, y aunque no llegaron a eclosionar, los embriones lograron desarrollarse hasta los 19 días. Se lograron condiciones de incubación que permitieron la supervivencia y desarrollo de los embriones hasta etapas tardías. Así, debido a las condiciones establecidas de calcio, humedad y tiempo de preincubación, en el presente trabajo los pollitos alcanzaron los 19 días de desarrollo.

SUMMARY: The domestic chicken is a species of bird that has been extensively studied in regard to its biology and as a model organism for science. The reproduction of the species is by the laying of fertilized eggs, which in a period of 21 days will develop a chick inside. Several methods have been described to develop embryos ex-ovo, allowing the observation and manipulation of the organism. This work has the propose to standardize a method that allows the development of the embryos inside the artificial incubation system, which has a low cost and is easy to make. In this work, 100 chicken eggs were used to study the effects of humidity, mineral supplementation, and the preincubation time of the egg on the incubation ex-ovo of the embryos. Embryo development was documented through the different days. Pulverized eggshell was selected as an optimal source to provide calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other minerals to the developing embryo. By providing 900-1200 mg of pulverized eggshell, 40 mL of the 0.001 % solution of benzalkonium chloride, and a preincubation time of approximately 56 h, the embryos were able to develop until 19 days, and even though they did not reach hatching, the incubation conditions that allowed the survival and development of embryos until late stages were achieved. Thus, due to the conditions established for calcium, humidity and preincubation time, in the present work, the chicks reached 19 days of development.

Resumo No México, a produção intensiva de rãs-touro é uma das atividades mais relevantes da aquicultura devido à sua crescente demanda. As rãs podem ser hospedeiras de vários parasitos que afetam negativamente seu desenvolvimento e sua saúde animal. O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar a presença de parasitas gastrointestinais (IPs) em rãs de boi em unidades de produção aquícola. Foram selecionadas 18 unidades de produção aquícola de rãs-touro, e de cada unidade 20 animais (n=360). Amostras fecais foram obtidas por raspagem de mucosas e processadas pelo método de concentração. A prevalência geral de IPs foi de 70,5%, todas as fazendas foram infectadas com algum parasita. Duas espécies de parasitas Eimeria sp. e Strongyloides sp. foram identificadas; encontrando-se diferenças significativas na prevalência entre machos e fêmeas (73,8% vs 58,8%), comprimento da tíbia (5,5 vs 6,1 cm) e peso (168 vs 187 g) entre rãs parasitadas e não parasitadas. Em conclusão, o presente estudo mostrou uma alta prevalência e alterações morfométricas (peso, comprimento do ronco-cloaca, comprimento do rádio-ulna, comprimento da tíbia e distância entre as glândulas parótidas) todas identificadas nos animais parasitados. Esses resultados mostram informações relevantes que permitirão o estabelecimento de medidas de controle adequadas para ajudar a minimizar os efeitos adversos desses parasitas. Abstract In Mexico, intensive production of bullfrogs is one of the most important aquaculture activities, due to growing demand for their meat. Frogs can be hosts for several parasites that negatively affect their development and health. The objective of this study was to identify the presence of intestinal parasites in bullfrogs in aquaculture production units. Eighteen bullfrogs aquaculture production units were selected, and 20 animals (n=360) from each farm. Fecal samples were obtained by mucosal scraping and processed using the concentration method. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 70.5%, and all farms had frogs infected by some species of parasite. Two species of parasites were identified: Eimeria sp. and Strongyloides sp. Significant differences were found regarding parasite prevalence between males and females (73.8% vs 58.8%) and regarding tibia length (5.5 vs 6.1 cm) and weight (168 vs 187 g) between parasitized and non-parasitized frogs. In conclusion, the present study showed a high prevalence of intestinal parasites, and morphometric alterations (weight, snout-cloaca length, radio-ulna length, tibia length and distance between parotid glands) were identified in the parasitized animals. These results provided useful information that will enable establishment of adequate control measures to help minimize the adverse effects of these parasites. Resumen El objetivo fue evaluar la productividad, el precio de venta de leche, el tamaño y las percepciones de sus propietarios sobre su entorno, calidad y permanencia en explotaciones de producción de leche del estado de Aguascalientes. Se evaluaron 40 unidades de producción de leche, con condiciones semejantes de antigüedad (30 años), manejo zootécnico, disponibilidad de insumos y clientes. A través de un MANOVA se compararon las características productivas de las explotaciones con relación al factor del tamaño del hato. Se formuló un modelo estructural para evaluar el efecto de los factores del entorno sobre la calidad de la leche y la intención de los granjeros en dar continuidad a las unidades de producción en la actividad lechera. Se encontró influencia positiva en la escala productiva de las explotaciones lecheras, la obtención de mayor productividad diaria por vaca, mejor percepción de calidad y el precio de venta de la leche. En el modelo, los factores del entorno se asociaron significativamente con la valoración de la calidad de la leche por los productores y su permanencia de la actividad lechera (14.2 y 22.7 %, respectivamente). Lo anterior confirma que la percepción de factores del entorno pudiera ser considerado como variable crucial para incrementar la calidad de la leche, la productividad y para el encuentro entre los intereses de los productores y de la agroindustria, así como para favorecer el desempeño e integración de los diferentes eslabones de la cadena productiva lechera e impulsar la competitividad global del sector agroalimentario mexicano.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the productivity, the sale price of milk, the size and the perceptions of their owners about their environment, quality and permanence in milk production farms in the state of Aguascalientes. Forty milk production units, with similar conditions of age (30 years), zootechnical management, availability of inputs and customers, were evaluated. The productive characteristics of the farms in relation to the herd size factor were compared through a MANOVA. A structural model was formulated to evaluate the effect of environmental factors on milk quality and farmers’ intention to continue production units in the dairy activity. A positive influence was found on the productive scale of dairy farms, the obtaining of higher daily productivity per cow, better perception of quality and the sale price of milk. In the model, environmental factors were significantly associated with the assessment of milk quality by producers and their permanence in the dairy activity (14.2 and 22.7 %, respectively). This confirms that the perception of environmental factors could be considered as a crucial variable to increase milk quality, productivity and for the meeting between the interests of producers and the agribusiness, as well as to favor the performance and integration of the different links in the dairy production chain and boost the global competitiveness of the Mexican agri-food sector.

Abstract Contamination of agricultural and livestock products with aflatoxins (AF) is distributed worldwide. AFs are toxic, carcinogenic, and immunosuppressive; however, in Mexico, there is little information about Aspergillus flavus, the main fungus that produces them. The objective was to characterize the molecular and morphological, aflatoxigenic isolates of A. flavus and quantify the AFs in the feed and in the milk of Holstein cows in Aguascalientes (Mexico). A dairy production unit (2,749 cows) was selected for reasons of convenience, and monthly samples of food ingredients and total mixed ration (n= 267), raw milk (n= 288), and agricultural soil (n =40) were collected during 24 months and were cultivated (in PDA) using the pour plate technique with serial dilutions. The fungi were characterized using SEM, TLC and vapors of ammonium in coconut agar; the genes of calmodulin and a regulator of the biosynthetic pathway of AF, as well as the region of the internal spacer of the transcript, were sequenced. AFs were quantified in feed with HPLC and in milk, using ELISA. A total of 283 fungal isolates were characterized molecularly; of which 88 proved to be Aspergillus spp. Five of these were A. flavus with an aflatoxigenic capacity, and one was non-aflatoxigenic. 99.3 % of the samples of feed and 39.9 % of the milk samples exhibited detectable levels of AF (14.8 and 0,021 µg/kg). The cows ate daily 621 µg of AF and eliminated 0.09 % as AFM1 in milk. This suggests that the occurrence of aflatoxigenic A. flavus in the feed of dairy cows leads to a widespread contamination of the diets and food chain with AF.

Resumen La contaminación de productos agrícolas y pecuarios con aflatoxinas (AF) está distribuida mundialmente. Las AF son tóxicas, inmunodepresoras y carcinogénicas, pero en México es escasa la información sobre Aspergillus flavus, principal hongo que las produce. El objetivo fue caracterizar morfológica, molecular y aflatoxigénicamente aislados de A. flavus y cuantificar AF en pienso y en leche de vacas Holstein en Aguascalientes (México). Se seleccionó por conveniencia una unidad de producción lechera (2,749 vacas) y se recolectaron muestras mensuales (24 meses) de ingredientes alimenticios y ración total mezclada (n= 267), leche cruda (n= 288) y suelo agrícola (n= 40), las cuales se cultivaron (PDA) mediante vaciado en placa con diluciones seriadas. Los hongos se caracterizaron mediante MEB, TLC y vapores de amonio en agar coco; se secuenciaron los genes de calmodulina y regulador de la ruta biosintética de AF, así como la región de los espaciadores internos de la transcripción. Se cuantificaron AF en pienso con HPLC y en leche con ELISA. Se caracterizaron molecularmente 283 aislados fúngicos; 88 resultaron ser Aspergillus spp, de los que 5 fueron A. flavus con capacidad aflatoxigénica y uno no aflatoxigénico. El 99.3 % de las muestras de alimento y 39.9 % de las muestras de leche presentaron niveles detectables de AF (14.8 y 0.021 µg/kg). Las vacas ingirieron diariamente 621 µg de AF y eliminaron el 0.09 % como aflatoxina M1 en leche. Lo anterior sugiere que la ocurrencia A. flavus aflatoxigénico en el alimento de vacas lecheras conduce a una amplia contaminación por AF de las dietas y de la cadena alimenticia.

Abstract: Poultry farming is common in rural Mexico in part because it provides extra household income. Alternative protein sources for poultry feed are needed for these systems. An evaluation was done of how 10% inclusion of Moringa oleifera leaf in diets for broilers affected productive and blood parameters. A proximal analysis, and Fe, Ca and tannins contents were quantified for moringa leaf flour. Four productive and six blood parameters (two proteins and four enzymes) were evaluated in Ross-308 broilers. Histopathological analyses were done of liver and kidney tissue. The moringa leaf flour contained 33.4% protein, and had high iron (19.7 mg/100 g) and calcium (2593.3 mg/100 g) contents, as well as low tannins content (24.4 mg CE/100 g). Compared to a control, daily weight gain decreased 12 % in the moringa leaf treatment while productivity index values decreased 20%. No differences were observed between the control and treatment in terms of protein content, and alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities. However, differences in albumin, alkaline phosphatase and the glutamyl transpeptidase levels suggest possible liver and renal damage in the moringa leaf treatment. These results were not confirmed in the histological analysis. Further research is needed using lower moringa leaf flour inclusion levels to compare to the present results and better define possible inclusion levels in poultry diets.

Resumen Es necesario explorar fuentes de proteína alterna para adicionar a la alimentación de aves en regiones rurales. Son contados los estudios realizados en moringa para este propósito. Se determinó el análisis proximal, el contenido de Fe, Ca y taninos a la harina de hoja de moringa. Se evaluó el efecto del consumo de una dieta con 10 % de harina sobre cuatro parámetros productivos y seis serológicos (dos proteínas y cuatro enzimas) en pollos de engorda Ross-308. También se realizaron estudios histopatológicos del hígado y riñón de los pollos. La hoja de moringa presentó 33.4 % de proteína y un alto contenido de hierro (19.7 mg/100 g) y calcio (2593.3 mg/100 g) así como bajo contenido de taninos (24.4 mg EC/100 g). Se observó una reducción del 12 y 20 % en la ganancia en peso y en el índice de productividad, respectivamente, en los pollos a los que se les adicionó moringa. No se observaron diferencias entre el grupo control y el adicionado con moringa en el contenido de proteínas y la actividad de la alanino aminotransferasa y la aspartato aminotransferasa, pero si en la albúmina, la fosfatasa alcalina y la gama galutamil transpeptidasa, que sugiere cierto daño hepático y renal. Estos resultados no se observaron en los estudios histológicos. Se sugiere seguir realizando estudios con niveles de complementación menor con la harina de moringa para comparar los efectos encontrados en el presente estudio y así poder definir su uso potencial.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of and certain risk factors associated with infection by Cryptosporidium spp. in suckling calves that were maintained in confinement in three dairy farms in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Over a period of 12 months, 1658 fecal samples were taken from 0- to 28 day-old calves. These samples were processed by a Kinyoun stain of the fecal smears to identify the presence of parasite oocysts. A survey was conducted to identify the different management factors present in the dairy farms, and a risk analysis was performed using logistic regression. The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. infection was 40%; the 8- to 14-day-old age group of calves had the highest prevalence of infection (81%), while the lowest prevalence of infection (21%) was observed in the 22- to 28-day-old age group. The identified risk factors for infection by Cryptosporidium spp. included the 8- to 14-day-old group (OR = 15.2; 95% CI 11.2 - 20.6; P < 0.000) and the 15- to 21-day-old group (OR = 2.5; 95% CI 1.9 - 3.2, P < 0.000); the use of sawdust bedding (OR= 1.8; 95% Cl 1.1 - 2.8, P < 0.011); the plastic container from which calves drink milk (OR =1.4; 95% Cl 1.1-1.7, P < 0.000); the low level of immunoglobulins (OR = 1.8; 95% Cl 1.1 - 2.9, P < 0.009); and calving care by non-specialized personnel (night watchman: OR = 2.5; 95% Cl 1.6 - 3.9, P < 0.000; nursing area worker: OR 1.7; 95% Cl 1.2 - 2.5, P < 0.001).

Resumen El objetivo fue identificar la prevalencia y algunos factores de riesgo asociados a la infección por Cryptosporidium spp. en becerras lactantes mantenidas en confinamiento en tres establos lecheros de Aguascalientes, México. Durante 12 meses se recolectaron 1658 muestras fecales de becerras de 0 a 28 días de edad, que se procesaron mediante frotis fecal teñido con Kinyoun para identificar la presencia de ooquistes del parásito. Se aplicó una encuesta para identificar diferentes características de manejo en los establos y se desarrolló el análisis de riesgos mediante regresión logística. La prevalencia general a la infección por Cryptosporidium spp. fue de 40%. El grupo de becerras de 8 a 14 días de edad presentó la prevalencia a la infección más elevada (81%), mientras que la más baja (21%) se observó en el grupo de 22 a 28 días de edad. Se identificaron como factores de riesgo a la infección por Cryptosporidium spp., al grupo de 8 a 14 días de edad (OR = 2.5; 95% Cl 1.9 - 3.2, p < 0.000); el uso de cama de aserrín (OR = 1.8; 95% Cl 1.1 - 2.8, p < 0.011); el recipiente de plástico de donde beben leche las becerras (OR = 1.4; 95% Cl 1.1 - 1.7, p < 0.000); el bajo nivel de inmunoglobulinas (OR = 1.8; 95% Cl 1.1 - 2.9, p < 0.009), y la atención de partos por parte de personal no especializado (velador: OR = 2.5; 95% Cl 1.6 - 3.9, p < 0.000; trabajador del área de recría: OR = 1.7; 95% Cl 1.2 - 2.5, p < 0.001).

Between large and small-scale dairy farms (SSDF) there are gaps in economic profitability (EP) due to significant scale economies, but also can be found within the small-scale stratum, hindering the technological advancement and milk production sustainability. The aim was to identify the presence of EP gaps and relate them to productive factors in SSDF. Eighty nine owners were interviewed (2011) in SSDF located in the Mexican Highland Plateau (Valley of Aguascalientes), recorded in the SAGARPA Program for Technical Training and Assistance (sample: 95% confidence and 10% accuracy; SSDF with <50 cows and <10 employed persons, E; 162 variables). The net cost-benefit ratio (NCB), value-added (VA) and factors that influenced the existence of surplus (NCB >1.0) were calculated on annual basis. Only one of five SSDF had surplus results (17/89=19.1%; CI95%: 14.9, 23.3 %), directly associated (P<0.05) with higher total income, VA, E, salaries for family members, cows by E, sales prices and feed cost; and inversely with lower cost of inputs, proportion of milk for family use and total value of assets and livestock. Other variables were not significant or correlated and were considered collinear. The family labor (2.2 E/SSDF) predominated (85.4 %) but did not significantly influence the NCB (P=0.787). In addition, farmers who were organized had better outcomes (P<0.05) than those who remained isolated (NCB>1.0: 7/20 vs 10/69). These results suggest that public and private policies could focus their efforts to bridging the PE gaps between SSDF, improving the reach of technical potential for milk production, trading strategies, employment, and natural resources preservation.

Entre las grandes y pequeñas unidades de producción lechera (PUPL) existen brechas en la rentabilidad económica (RE) debido a economías de escala significativas; aunque también pueden hallarse al interior del estrato de pequeña escala, dificultando el avance tecnológico y sustentabilidad de la producción lechera. El objetivo fue identificar la presencia de brechas de RE y relacionarlas con los factores productivos de PUPL. Se entrevistaron 89 propietarios de PUPL del Altiplano Central Mexicano (Valle de Aguascalientes) registrados en el Programa de Capacitación y Asistencia Técnica de SAGARPA (2011; muestra con 95 % de confiabilidad y 10% de precisión; 162 variables; PUPL con <50 vacas <10 personas ocupadas, PO). Se calculó anualizada la relación beneficio costo neto (BCN), valor agregado (VA) y factores que influyeron en la existencia de BCN>1.0. Sólo una de cinco PUPL tuvo resultados superavitarios (17/89=19.1 %; IC95%: 14.9, 23.3 %), asociados directamente (P<0.05) con mayor ingreso total, VA, PO, familiares con salario, vacas atendidas/ PO, precio de venta y costo de alimentación; e inversamente con menor costo de insumos, proporción de autoconsumo familiar y valor de activos y ganado. La mano de obra familiar (2.2 PO/PUPL) predominó (85.4 %) pero no influyó significativamente en BCN (P=0.787). Los ganaderos que estuvieron organizados tuvieron mejores resultados (P<0.05) que aquellos que permanecieron aislados (BCN>1.0: 7/20 vs 10/69). Estos resultados sugieren que las políticas públicas y privadas pudieran enfocar sus esfuerzos a cerrar las brechas de RE entre PUPL, mejorando el alcance del potencial técnico de producción, las estrategias de intercambio comercial, la preservación del empleo y recursos naturales.

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of risk factors on the occurrence of abortion and their impact on select reproductive efficiency parameters in dairy herds in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Three hundred and fifty three (353) serum samples from aborted or non-aborted cows in 23 dairies with records were collected. Herd/animal information was collected through interviews. In addition to herd condition-related factors, the influence of positive serology to bovine infectious rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), neosporosis (Nc), and brucellosis (Br) was explored. ELISA tests were used for all diseases, with the exception of Br. Serology of the latter was analyzed using the Bengal pink, rivanol, and radial immunodiffusion tests. Results were subjected to chi2 analysis and significantly-different (P<0.10) variables were subjected to logistic regression analysis. Reproductive efficiency-related variables were evaluated using analysis of variance. Negative IBR serology was the only factor increasing the risk of abortion (odds ratio, OR=1.71). Abortion resulted in increased number of services per conception (3.09 ± 0.25 vs 2.36 ± 0.12, P<0.05), days open (149.8 ± 9.7 vs 262.3 ± 18.7, P<0.01), and average number of days in lactation (192.4 ± 9.1 vs 285.9 ± 19.2, P<0.01). Results were not enough to associate herd/ animal abortion risk factors, but there is no doubt that abortion has a detrimental effect on herd reproductive efficiency.

Los objetivos del estudio fueron determinar el efecto de factores de riesgo sobre la ocurrencia del aborto, y su impacto sobre algunas medidas de eficiencia reproductiva en hatos de Aguascalientes. Se obtuvieron 353 sueros de vacas que abortaron y que no abortaron de 23 hatos con registros. La información de los hatos y animales se obtuvo por entrevistas. Además de factores relacionados con las condiciones de los hatos, se exploró la influencia de la seropositividad a rinotraqueitis infecciosa, diarrea viral bovina, neosporosis y brucelosis, determinada por pruebas comerciales de ELISA, y la última mediante las pruebas de rosa de bengala, rivanol e inmunodifusión radial. Se realizaron análisis de Ji-cuadrada, y posteriormente con las variables significativas (P<0.10) se realizaron análisis de de regresión logística. Las variables relativas a la eficiencia reproductiva de los animales se evaluaron mediante análisis de varianza. La seronegatividad a rinotraqueitis infecciosa fue el único factor que incrementó el riesgo de aborto (RM = 1.71). El aborto incrementó el número de servicios por concepción (3.09 ± 0.25 vs 2.36 + 0.12, P<0.05), los días abiertos (149.8 ± 9.7 vs 262.3 ± 18.7, P<0.01) y el promedio de días en lactancia (192.4 ± 9.1 vs 285.9 ± 19.2, P<0.01). Con los resultados encontrados no se logró determinar asociación entre los factores de riesgo relativos al hato e individuales relacionados con el aborto, pero es indudable que ocasiona un efecto detrimental sobre la eficiencia reproductiva de los hatos.

Abstract: The milk productive chain (MPC) in Aguascalientes contributes to diminish the national dependence on the imports of this product. The objective of this study was to discern the level of competitiveness and exchange relations of the different links of the MPC. Through systematic sampling (2004-2005), questionnaires were applied to 171 economic units (EU) in order to estimate benefit-cost relation (BCR), aggregate value (AV), and competitiveness criteria (CC). The MPC presented a heterogeneous mixture of coexisting economic units, organized as specialized system (modernized, integrated, large (AV), and positive BCR) or semi-specialized system (incipient technology, family labor, scarce AV, and negative BCR). Micro and small EU were partially incorporated horizontally (43.1%), maintaining links with intermediaries called routers (37.9%). Agribusiness (AB) was vertically coordinated backwards with primary producers. The MPC of EU dedicated to trade was close to the break-even point and unlike (AB), their CC is price-oriented rather than oriented towards milk product quality. The results suggest that EU competitiveness is directly related to their size, therefore, incorporation and coordination could be a useful alternative for small companies.

Resumen: La cadena productiva de leche (MPC) en Aguascalientes contribuye a disminuir la dependencia nacional de importación de este producto. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar el nivel de competitividad y las relaciones de intercambio de los diferentes eslabones de la CPL. Mediante un muestreo sistemático (20042005), se aplicaron cuestionarios a 171 unidades económicas (UE) para estimar: relación beneficio costo (RBC), valor agregado (VA) y criterios de competitividad (CC). La CPL presentó una mezcla heterogénea de UE coexistentes; organizadas como sistema especializado (tecnificado, integrado, VA grande y RBC positiva) o como sistema semiespecializado (tecnología incipiente, mano de obra familiar, VA escaso y RBC negativa). Las UE micro y pequeñas estaban integradas horizontalmente de manera parcial (43.1%), conservaban vínculos con los intermediarios llamados ruteros (37.9%). La agroindustria (AI) se coordinó verticalmente hacia atrás con los productores primarios. La RBC de las UE dedicadas al comercio fue cercana al punto de equilibrio y, a diferencia de la AI, sus CC se orientan al precio más que a la calidad de los productos lácteos. Los resultados sugieren que la competitividad de las UE se relaciona directamente con su tamaño, por lo que la integración y coordinación pudieran ser una alternativa útil para las pequeñas empresas.
