ABSTRACT. We investigated aggregation patterns in three fruit fly species economically important in Brazil, namely Ceratitis capitata, Anastrepha fraterculus, and A. obliqua. The study was carried out in a buffer zone and two neighbourhoods by comparing two-time series associated with the management strategy of fruit flies (systems approach). The abundance of these three species significantly decreased over the years with a negative binomial regression model describing the relationship between abundance and time in the entire area, buffer zone, and their neighbourhoods. In addition, the negative binomial model was also well fitted to the frequency distribution data of fruit flies in all analyzed scenarios. Anastrepha obliqua showed the highest aggregation degree, considering both the entire area and time series. A. fraterculus exhibited the lowest aggregation level, and C. capitata showed an intermediate degree. The buffer zone exhibited the highest aggregation degree for all species, and neighbourhood 2 exhibited the lowest aggregation degree. The aggregation degree was higher in the time series impacted by the systems approach than the series in the first years of its implementation.

RESUMO: Ocorrências de Anastrepha barbiellinii Lima, Anastrepha connexa Lima, Anastrepha consobrina (Loew), Anastrepha kuhlmanni Lima, Anastrepha leptozona Hendel e Anastrepha xanthochaeta Hendel são registradas pela primeira vez no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. As espécies foram capturadas em armadilhas do tipo McPhail com um atrativo alimentar de proteína hidrolisada (5%) em três pomares de espécies cultivadas e um remanescente de Mata Atlântica no município de Viçosa, Minas Gerais, ou obtidas por meio de levantamento de espécies de Tephritidae depositadas no Museu Regional de Entomologia (UFVB) da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Campus Viçosa, estado de Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT: Occurrences of Anastrepha barbiellinii Lima, Anastrepha connexa Lima, Anastrepha consobrina (Loew), Anastrepha kuhlmanni Lima, Anastrepha leptozona Hendel, and Anastrepha xanthochaeta Hendel are recorded for the first time in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species were captured in McPhail traps baited with hydrolyzed protein (5%) in orchards of cultivated species and in a remnant of the Atlantic Forest in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, or obtained from the collection of species deposited in the Regional Museum of Entomology (UFVB) of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Campus Viçosa, in the state of Minas Gerais.

RESUMO:Os estudos foram conduzidos em pomares de goiaba, em dois municípios do estado de Sáo Paulo. Em Monte Alegre do Sul, o levantamento foi realizado em uma estação experimental da Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios, na qual foram cole tadas 13 espécies de Anastrepha, desde janeiro de 2002 a dezembro de 2003. Em Monte Alto, em pomar comercial, foram coletadas oito espécies, desde janeiro a dezembro de 2004. Anastrepha fraterculus foi a espécie mais frequente nos dois municípios. Os parâmetros cli máticos exerceram baixa influência sobre a flutuação populacional das espécies de Anastrepha, nos dois pomares. Os picos populacio nais das espécies de Anastrepha mais abundantes variaram entre os pomares. A disponibilidade de frutos no pomar e nos entornos é o fator que determina o tamanho das populações de moscas-das-frutas.

ABSTRACT:Studies were carried out in guava orchards, in two municipalities of the State of Sâo Paulo, Brazil. In Monte Alegre do Sul, the survey was done in an experimental station of Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios, in which 13 Anastrepha species were collected from January 2002 to December 2003. In Monte Alto, in a commercial orchard, eight species were captured, from January to December 2004. Anastrepha fraterculus was the most frequent species in both municipalities. The climatic parameters had low influence on the population fluctuation of the Anastrepha species in both orchards. The most common population peaks of Anastrephaspecies varied between the orchards. The availability of fruits in the orchard and nearby them is the factor that determines the size of the fruit fly populations.

Este trabalho objetivou caracterizar as populações de moscas-das-frutas de quatro municípios da Região Noroeste do estado do Rio de Janeiro (Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, Italva, Itaperuna e Natividade), desenvolvendo-se uma análise faunística dos espécimes coletados em armadilhas plásticas tipo McPhail, em pomares comerciais de goiaba (Psidium guajava L.) e laranja doce (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) e em pomares caseiros diversificados, durante dois anos. Foram coletadas 29.909 fêmeas de Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) e 27.621 fêmeas de 16 espécies Anastrepha Schiner. O maior valor do índice de Shannon foi registrado para Bom Jesus do Itabapoana (H = 0,96), confirmando o maior número de espécies capturadas nesse município (S = 14). As populações de moscas-das-frutas apresentaram baixos índices de diversidade (alfa = 1,1 - 1,5). As espécies predominantes (mais freqüente, mais abundante, constante e dominante) foram C. capitata em Natividade e Bom Jesus do Itabapoana e A. fraterculus em Italva e Itaperuna. Quanto à composição de espécies de moscas-das-frutas, as populações de Natividade e Bom Jesus do Itabapoana foram mais semelhantes entre si, formando um grupo distinto das populações de moscas-das-frutas de Italva e Itaperuna, que formaram um outro grupo.

This paper aimed to characterize the fruit fly populations in four municipalities of the Northwest region of Rio de Janeiro State (Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, Italva, Itaperuna and Natividade), performing a faunistic analysis of the specimens of fruit fly collected with plastic McPhail traps in commercial orchards of guava (Psidium guajava L.) and orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck), and backyard gardens during a two year period. The total of 29,909 females of Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and 27,621 females belong to 16 species of Anastrepha Schiner was collected. The highest value of the Shannon index was reported in Bom Jesus do Itabapoana (H = 0.96), as well as highest species richness (S = 14). Fruit fly populations had low diversity indexes (alpha = 1.1 - 1.5). The predominant species (more frequent, more abundant, constant and dominant) were C. capitata in Natividade and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, and A. fraterculus (Wied.) in Italva and Itaperuna. Regarding fruit fly species composition, the population in Natividade and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana were more similar between each other, composing a distinct group of the fruit fly populations from Italva and Itaperuna, which composed another group.

A distribuição das fêmeas das espécies de Anastrepha por armadilha foi fortemente agregada, com cinco armadilhas (6%) capturando 50% do total de fêmeas. Apenas Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) e A. obliqua (Macquart) foram dominantes. A. fraterculus foi a espécie mais freqüente (80,2% das fêmeas) e a mais constante, ocorrendo em 98,0% das amostras. Em ordem decrescente de freqüência, seguiram-se A. obliqua (12,6%), A. pseudoparallela (Loew) (3,1%) e A. bistrigata Bezzi (2,1%). As demais espécies apresentaram freqüência menor que 1%. O valor elevado do índice de Simpson (0,660) e os valores baixos do índice de Shannon (0,7518) e de eqüitatividade (0,4597) resultaram da alta freqüência de A. fraterculus.

The distribution of females of Anastrepha species per trap was strongly clustered, with five traps (6%) capturing 50% of the total of females. Only Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) and A. obliqua (Macquart) were dominant species. A. fraterculus was by far the most frequent species (80.2% of the females), and the most constant, occurring in 98.0% of the samples. In decreasing order of frequency, A. obliqua (12.6%), A. pseudoparallela (Loew) (3.1%), and A. bistrigata Bezzi (2.1%) comprised the other major species. The remaining species showed frequency lower than 1%. The high value of the Simpson's index (0.660) as well as the low values of Shannon's index (0.7518) and the equitability index (0.4597) resulted from the high frequency of A. fraterculus.

Este trabalho constitui o primeiro registro de Anastrepha barbiellinii Lima, A. bistrigata Bezzi, A. manihoti Lima, A. minensis Lima e A. zenildae Zucchi no estado do Rio de Janeiro, totalizando 26 espécies de Anastrepha registradas no estado.

This paper reports the first record of the following Anastrepha species in the state of Rio de Janeiro: A. barbiellinii Lima, A. bistrigata Bezzi, A. manihoti Lima, A. minensis Lima and A. zenildae Zucchi. The number of Anastrepha species recorded in this state increased to 26.

Este trabalho foi conduzido na área abrangida pelo campus da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz da Universidade de São Paulo, no município de Piracicaba, Estado de São Paulo. Teve como objetivos, determinar a composição do gênero Anastrepha Schiner e verificar a associação das espécies de plantas hospedeiras, estabelecidas na área, com as espécies de Anastrepha. Foram examinadas 23.277 fêmeas de Anastrepha coletadas por meio de armadilhas McPhail e 18 espécies pertencentes a nove grupos de espécies foram registradas. Um total de 563 amostras de frutos pertencentes a nove famílias e, pelo menos, 23 espécies de plantas foi coletado em 47 estações de capturas. Foram identificadas 10.243 fêmeas e das 18 espécies de Anastrepha capturadas em armadilhas somente seis emergiram das amostras de frutos: A. bistrigata Bezzi, A. fraterculus (Wied.), A. obliqua (Macquart), A. pseudoparallela (Loew), A. serpentina (Wied.) e A. sororcula Zucchi. A. fraterculus infestou maior diversidade de frutos. Os hospedeiros preferidos de A. obliqua foram as espécies da família Anacardiaceae. A. pseudoparallela e A. serpentina infestaram exclusivamente Passifloraceae e Sapotaceae, respectivamente. A. fraterculus é registrada pela primeira vez em sapoti (Manilkara zapota L.) no Brasil.

Biodiversity of fruit flies of the genus Anastrepha (Diptera, Tephritidae) at the ESALQ-USP campus, Piracicaba, São Paulo. The aim of this study was to determine the number of species of Anastrepha Schiner at the campus and to verify the association between host plant species and Anastrepha species in this area. A total of 23,277 females of Anastrepha collected in McPhail traps was examined, and 18 species belonging to nine species groups were recorded. A total of 563 fruit samples representing at least 23 plant species from nine families was collected in 47 capture sites. A total of 10,243 females was identified. Of the 18 Anastrepha species captured in traps, only six emerged from fruit samples: A. bistrigata Bezzi, A. fraterculus (Wied.), A. obliqua (Macquart), A. pseudoparallela (Loew), A. serpentina (Wied.) and A. sororcula Zucchi. A. fraterculus infested the greatest diversity of hosts. The preferred hosts of A. obliqua were plant species of the family Anacardiaceae. A. pseudoparallela, and A. serpentina only infested species of Passifloraceae and Sapotaceae, respectively. A. fraterculus is recorded for the first time in sapodilla (Manilkara zapota L.) in Brazil.

Anastrepha morvasi n. sp. é descrita com base em exemplares fêmeas coletados em armadilhas tipo McPhail em levantamentos das espécies de moscas-das-frutas conduzidos em Vacaria, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Descrição, diagnose e ilustrações dessa nova espécie são elaboradas, e uma chave de identificação para as espécies do grupo punctata, incluindo A. morvasi n. sp., é apresentada.

Anastrepha morvasi n. sp. is described based on female specimens collected in McPhail traps in a fruit fly survey conducted in Vacaria, State of Rio Grande do Sul. Description, diagnosis and illustrations are provided and a diagnostic key to the species of the punctata group, including A. morvasi n. sp., is also presented.

Aedes (Ochlerotatus) rhyacophilus Costa Lima é retida da sinonímia con Aedes (Ochlerotatus) scapularis (Rondani). São designados lectótipo e paralectótipos. As formas larval, pupal e adulta de ambos os sexos são redescritas e acompanhadas de ilustrações representativas desses estádios, além do aspecto de um criadouro natural. Apresentam-se caracteres diagnósticos que permitem separar rhyacophilus das outras espécies do Grupo Scapularis, e alguns dados sobre a distribuição geográfica até agora conhecida.

Aedes (Ochlerotatu) rhyacophilus Costa Lima i resurrected from the synonymy with Aedes (Ochlerotatus) scapularis (Rondani). Lectotype and paralectotypes are designated Larval, pupal and both sexes of adult stages are redescribed and illustrated. Bionomics include a picture of a brreding place. Diagnostic characters for distinguishing rhyacophilus from other species of the Scapularis Group are provided. Some data about known distribution are presented.
