RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Moenkhausia é descrita nos afluentes do rio Sepotuba, bacia do Paraguai, no Brasil. A nova espécie se distingue dos seus congêneres por uma combinação de caracteres, incluindo uma mancha umeral discreta de forma oval, alongada verticalmente, que se estende horizontalmente da terceira a quinta escamas da linha lateral e, verticalmente, da terceira fila de escamas acima da linha lateral até a primeira fila abaixo da linha lateral; seguida por escassos cromatóforos no flanco, combinado com uma linha escura bem definida na base da nadadeira anal. Além disso, a posição filogenética da nova espécie é apresentada com base em dados moleculares, mostrando um relacionamento próximo entre as espécies de Moenkhausia e Hemigrammus que possuem uma linha escura bem definida na base da nadadeira anal. Até o momento, essa espécie é conhecida apenas da bacia do Alto Sepotuba.

ABSTRACT A new species of Moenkhausia is described from tributaries of the upper rio Sepotuba, Paraguay basin, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters, including an inconspicuous oval-shaped vertically elongated humeral blotch, extending horizontally from third through five lateral-line scales, and vertically from third row above lateral line to first row below it, followed by a diffuse field of dark chromatophores in the flank, combined with a well-defined dark line at the base of the anal fin. Furthermore, the phylogenetic position of the new species is presented based on molecular data, showing a close relationship among species of Moenkhausia and Hemigrammus that have a well-defined dark line at the base of the anal fin. Until this moment, this species is only known from in the upper rio Sepotuba basin.

RESUMO A estruturação das assembleias de peixes em riachos de cabeceira sofre forte influência dos modelos de uso e ocupação do solo. O avanço da fronteira agrícola tem se mostrado uma das principais ameaças às comunidades desses ambientes. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência das formas de uso e ocupação do solo sobre a estrutura da comunidade de peixes em riachos de cabeceira, localizados na bacia do Alto Paraguai, Mato Grosso, Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas nos riachos Ararão, Queima Pé e Russo, no município de Tangará da Serra, MT, usando rede de arrasto e peneira, entre os meses de julho e dezembro de 2013. Foram coletados 4.192 indivíduos pertencentes a 35 espécies, sendo que Moenkhausia lopesi (Britski & de Silimon, 2001) e Knodus moenkhausii (Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903) mostraram-se dominantes, representando 68,5% dos indivíduos amostrados. A riqueza e abundância não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os três riachos, porém o índice de diversidade de Shannon foi maior no riacho Russo (H´ = 2,33). Os altos percentuais de conversão da vegetação nativa em campos de agricultura (49,20%) e pecuária (30,69%), revelaram forte relação negativa da agricultura com a riqueza, indicando que quanto menor a área de agricultura maior é a riqueza.

ABSTRACT The advance of the agricultural frontier is one of the biggest threats to the communities' structure of the fish assemblages in headwaters streams. The influence of land use and occupation on the fish assemblages structure in headwater streams was evaluated in three stream reaches in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Samples were collected from July to December 2013 using dragging net and sieve in Ararão, Queima Pé e Russo streams, municipality of Tangará da Serra. Totals of 35 species encompassing 4,192 individuals were collected, and the dominant species within were Moenkhausia lopesi (Britski & de Silimon, 2001) e Knodus moenkhausii (Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903), accounting for 68.5% of the individuals. There were no significant differences in richness or abundance among the three streams, but Shannon diversity index was higher in the Russo stream (H´ = 2,33). The high percentage of native vegetation converted into agriculture crops (49.20%) and cattle raising (30.69%), disclosed a strong negative relationship between agriculture and richness, showing that as the agriculture fields become smaller the species richness becomes larger.
