ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the use of the product of thermal efficiency and photosynthetically active radiation (TEP) to model the growth of tomato seedlings across different growing seasons. The work was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates in two seasons (summer/autumn and winter/spring). Height, diameter, the Dickson’s Quality Index (DQI), and total plant mass (TPM) were measured at 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 days after sowing (DAS). The logistic model was fitted for each measured variable as a function of TEP, and the partial derivatives of the fitted function estimated the critical points. The results demonstrated that the logistic function effectively explained the nonlinear relationships of seedling growth. The fit quality parameters showed high fitted coefficients of determination and low values for the standard error of fit, residual standard deviation, and intrinsic and parametric nonlinearity. It was possible to characterize the growth process of tomato seedlings in both growth periods investigated. The logistic model fitted for the studied variables as a function of TEP becomes an accurate model capable of describing growth aspects of tomato seedlings, such as growth estimation, growth speed, and growth rate, essential parameters for decision-making in tomato cultivation. RESUMO: A cultura da cenoura se destaca no cenário mundial por suas características nutricionais e importância econômica, aspecto que demanda o constante desenvolvimento de pesquisas visando maior produtividade. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi propor um plano experimental, determinando as estimativas de tamanho de parcela, tamanho de amostra e número de repetições, com a finalidade de aumentar a precisão e confiabilidade dos resultados dos experimentos com a cultura da cenoura. Foram conduzidos seis ensaios de uniformidade, utilizando três cultivares em duas safras (Safra: 2019 e 2021). Cada planta foi considerada uma unidade experimental básica e em cada BEU foram medidas as variáveis altura da parte aérea, comprimento da raiz, massa fresca da parte aérea, massa fresca da raiz e diâmetro da raiz. O tamanho da parcela, da amostra e o número de repetições foram estimados pelo método da máxima curvatura do coeficiente de variação. Os resultados recomendam que para experimentos com a cultura da cenoura sejam utilizadas parcelas com doze plantas. Para amostragem de plantas de cenoura na parcela, devem ser utilizadas amostras de onze plantas no sentido da linha, considerando uma semi-amplitude do intervalo de confiança (D%) igual a 20% da média, com nível de confiança de 95%. ABSTRACT: The carrotculture stands out on the world stage due to its nutritional characteristics and economic importance, an aspect that demands the constant development of research aiming greater productivity. Thus, this study proposed an experimental plan, determining the estimates of plot size, sample size, and number of repetitions, with the purpose of increasing the precision and reliability of the results of the experiments with the carrot crop. Six uniformity trials were conducted, using three cultivars in two growing seasons (Season: 2019 and 2021).Each plant was considered a basic experimental unit and in each BEU, the variables shoot height, root length, shoot fresh mass, root fresh mass, and root diameter were measured. The size of the plot, sample, and the number of repetitions was estimated by the method of maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation. The results recommend that for experiments with the carrot crop, plots with twelve plants should be used. For a sampling of carrot plants in the plot, samples of eleven plants must be used in the direction of the row, considering a semi-amplitude of the confidence interval (D%) equal to 20% of the mean, with a confidence level of 95%. For a minimum significant difference in the Tukey test expressed as a percentage of the 50% mean, plots of twelve plants per crop row, with eight replicates, are recommended. RESUMO Pisum sativum L. é uma cultura multiuso, cuja duração de seu período vegetativo e reprodutivo é determinada pela combinação de temperatura, umidade e resposta do genótipo a essas condições. Diante do exposto, visando minimizar as perdas de produtividade por condições adversas em períodos sensíveis da cultura, o objetivo foi avaliar o desenvolvimento fenológico e a produção de Pisum sativum L. em diferentes épocas de cultivo. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados, com cinco estações de cultivo, quatro repetições e oito plantas por unidade experimental. As variáveis analisadas foram: plastocrono, número de dias para início da floração, plena floração e início da colheita, soma térmica acumulada para início da floração, plena floração e início da colheita, número de vagens, massa de vagens e produtividade total por unidade de área. A análise de variância foi realizada e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Scott Knott. Também foi realizada a análise de componentes principais da matriz de correlação de Pearson’s das variáveis fenológicas e de produção. Nas estações 1, 4 e 5, as plantas atingiram a plena floração mais cedo e a massa de vagens foi consideravelmente menor, resultando em menores rendimentos. ABSTRACT Pisum sativum L. is a multi-purpose crop. The duration of its vegetative and reproductive periods is determined by a combination of temperature and humidity and genotype response to these conditions. To minimize the loss of productivity due to adverse conditions in sensitive periods of the crop, we evaluated the phenological development and production of Pisum sativum L. in different growing seasons. We used a randomized block design, and the experiments were conducted across five growing seasons, with four replications and eight plants per experimental unit. The variables analyzed were as follows: plastochron, number of days to start flowering, full flowering, and beginning of harvest, the accumulated thermal sum to start flowering, full flowering, and beginning of harvest, and the number of pods, pod mass, and total productivity per unit area. The analysis of variance was performed, and the mean values of the data were compared using the Scott-Knott test. Principal component analysis was also performed from Pearson’s correlation matrix of phenological and production variables. In seasons 1, 4, and 5, the plants reached full flowering earlier, and the pod mass was considerably lower, resulting in lower yields. Seasons 2 and 3 were the most productive and showed lower results for plastochron, less thermal sum until full flowering, and a shorter photoperiod, which, combined with low temperatures during the growing season, resulted in a longer cultivation cycle. RESUMO Uma das formas de otimizar a avaliação do experimento e obter elevada precisão dos resultados é com o uso de quantidade adequada de mensurações para cada variável observada no experimento. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi estimar coeficiente de repetibilidade e o número de mensurações necessárias para análise de caracteres de produção de abobrinha, pepino, pimenta biquinho e ervilha. Os experimentos foram realizados no Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Para abobrinha e pepino avaliaram-se as variáveis número, massa e comprimento de frutos, maior e menor diâmetro dos frutos. Para ervilha avaliou-se o número, massa e comprimento de vagens, número e massa de grãos, e para pimenta biquinho avaliou-se número, massa, maior diâmetro e o comprimento dos frutos. O coeficiente de repetibilidade (r) foi estimado pelo método dos componentes principais usando a matriz de correlação e a matriz de covariâncias. Determinou-se ainda, o número de mensurações para cada variável com base nos coeficientes de determinação de 0.80, 0.85, 0.90, 0.95 e 1.00. O coeficiente de repetibilidade estimado obteve as maiores estimativas com o uso da matriz de covariâncias, variando de 0,67 a 0,84 para abobrinha, de 0,66 a 0,97 para pepino, de 0,47 a 0,70 para ervilha e de 0,57 a 0,71 para pimenta biquinho. Para avaliar a massa de frutos em abobrinha, pepino, ervilha e pimenta biquinho, são necessárias, respectivamente 7, 4, 8 e 8 mensurações para um coeficiente de determinação de 95%.

ABSTRACT One of the ways to optimize the evaluation of the experiment and obtain high precision of the results is with the use of an adequate number of measurements for each variable observed in the experiment. In this sense, the objective of this study was to estimate the repeatability coefficient and the number of measurements necessary for the analysis of characters of production of zucchini, cucumber, pout pepper and pea. In the experiments carried out with zucchini and cucumber the variables number of fruits, fruit mass, fruit length, largest fruit diameter and smallest fruit diameter were evaluated. For pea the number, length and mass of pods, number and mass of grains per pod and for pout pepper number and mass of fruits, largest fruit diameter and length were evaluated. The repeatability coefficient (r) was estimated by the principal component method using the correlation matrix and the covariance matrix. The number of measurements for each variable was also determined based on the coefficients of determination of 0.80, 0.85, 0.90, 0.95 and 1.00. The estimated repeatability coefficient obtained the highest estimates using the covariance matrix, ranging from 0.67 to 0.84 for zucchini, from 0.66 to 0.97 for cucumber, from 0.47 to 0.70 for pea and from 0.57 to 0.71 for pout pepper. To evaluate the fruit mass in zucchini, cucumber, pea and pout pepper, are exactly, respectively, 7, 4, 8 and 8 measurements for a coefficient of determination of 95%.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as relações entre os caracteres biométricos de mudas de tomate com os caracteres de produção obtidos ao final do ciclo da cultura, para determinar como a qualidade das mudas interfere na produtividade do tomate. O experimento foi conduzido em duas épocas de cultivo, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições e a unidade experimental composta por cinco plantas. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por mudas com diferentes idades, diferenciadas pelos dias após a semeadura (DAS): (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 e 40 DAS). Após cada avaliação das mudas, eram transplantadas para o local de produção definitivo, sendo avaliadas até o final do ciclo. Avaliaram-se os caracteres biométricos das mudas e os caracteres da produção de frutos. Análise de correlação de Pearson e componentes principais (PCA) foram realizados para determinar as relações entre os caracteres, análise de trilha para determinar os efeitos diretos e indiretos e análise de correlações canônicas entre os grupos de caracteres. Em todas as análises realizadas, foi identificada correlação fraca entre os caracteres biométricos das mudas (que avaliam a qualidade) com os caracteres da produção de frutos de tomate em cultivo em substrato.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the relationships between the biometric characters of tomato seedlings with the production characters obtained at the end of the crop cycle, to determine how the quality of seedlings interferes with tomato productivity. An experiment was carried out in two growing seasons, in a completely randomized design, with four replications and the experimental unit consisting of five plants. The treatments consisted of seedlings with different ages, differentiated by the days after sowing (DAS): (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 DAS). After each evaluation of the seedlings, they were transplanted to the definitive production site, being evaluated until the end of the cycle. Biometric characters of seedlings and characters of fruit production were evaluated. Pearson correlation analysis and principal components (PCA) were performed to determine the relationships between the characters, path analysis to determine the direct and indirect effects, and analysis of canonical correlations between the groups of characters. In all analyses performed, weak correlation between the biometric characters of the seedlings (which evaluate the quality) with the characters of tomato fruit production in substrate cultivation was identified.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a época ideal de colheita de dez genótipos de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum) para o processamento e a qualidade de açúcar mascavo. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 3x10, em parcelas subdivididas, com três épocas de colheita e dez genótipos de cana-de-açúcar, no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Os parâmetros qualitativos de açúcar mascavo foram avaliados pelo teste de Scott-Knott, a 5% de probabilidade. A época de colheita em setembro, conhecida como meio de safra, é a mais adequada para a produção de açúcar mascavo, em razão dos maiores valores de ºBrix da cana, ºBrix do caldo, valor pol do mascavo e açúcares totais redutores nesse período. A colheita dos genótipos de cana-de-açúcar em junho-julho é a mais favorável para a produção de açúcar mascavo quanto às características de coloração a*, b*, L* e croma; no entanto, é também o período de produção de açúcar mascavo com menores teores de açúcar. A terceira época de colheita (novembro) é a menos recomenda para a produção de açúcar mascavo, em razão dos maiores valores de fibra e pureza. O genótipo mais adequado para a produção e a qualidade de açúcar mascavo é o 'IACSP04-704'.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the optimal harvest time of ten genotypes of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) for the processing and quality of brown sugar. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design in a 3x10 factorial arrangement in split plots, with three harvest times and ten sugarcane genotypes, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The qualitative parameters of brown sugar were evaluated by Scott-Knott’s test, at 5% probability. The harvest season in September, known as the middle of the harvest, is the most suitable for the production of brown sugar due to the higher of ºBrix values of cane, ºBrix of the broth, pol of brown sugar, and total reducing sugars in this period. The harvesting of the sugarcane genotypes in June-July is the most favorable for the production of brown sugar for the color characteristics a*, b*, L*, and chroma; however, it is also the period of production of brown sugar with a lower sugar content. The third harvest season (November) is the least recommended for brown sugar production due to the higher fiber and purity values. The most suitable genotype for brown sugar production and quality is 'IACSP04-704'.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto do tamanho da amostra sobre o diagnóstico da multicolinearidade em análise de trilha. A partir das análises de variáveis produtivas do tomate-cereja, foram obtidas duas matrizes de correlação de Pearson, uma com multicolinearidade severa e outra com multicolinearidade fraca. Sessenta e seis tamanhos de amostra foram delineados e, a partir da amplitude do intervalo de confiança “bootstrap”, verificou-se a existência de interferência do tamanho da amostra na multicolinearidade. Quando o tamanho da amostra foi pequeno, a imprecisão das estimativas dos critérios de diagnóstico interferiu na conclusão quanto à multicolinearidade da matriz com multicolinearidade fraca.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the interference of sample size on multicollinearity diagnosis in path analysis. From the analyses of productive traits of cherry tomato, two Pearson correlation matrices were obtained, one with severe multicollinearity and the other with weak multicollinearity. Sixty-six sample sizes were designed, and from the amplitude of the bootstrap confidence interval, it was observed that sample size interfered on multicollinearity diagnosis. When sample size was small, the imprecision of the diagnostic criteria estimates interfered with multicollinearity diagnosis in the matrix with weak multicollinearity.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho de amostra necessário para estimar o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre variáveis do tomate cereja. Foram instalados dois ensaios de uniformidade em ambiente protegido na primavera/verão de 2014. As variáveis observadas em cada planta foram comprimento médio de fruto, largura média de fruto, peso médio de fruto, número de cachos, número de frutos por cacho, número de frutos e peso total de frutos, sendo calculada a matriz de correlação de Pearson entre elas. Foram planejados 68 tamanhos de amostra em uma estufa e 48 em outra, com tamanho inicial composto de 10 plantas e os demais obtidos acrescentando cinco plantas. Para cada tamanho de amostra planejado foram obtidas 3000 estimativas do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson através de reamostragens “bootstrap” com reposição. O tamanho de amostra de cada coeficiente de correlação foi determinado quando o valor da amplitude do intervalo de confiança de 95% foi menor ou igual a 0,4. A obtenção das estimativas do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson com elevada precisão é difícil para caracteres com relação linear fraca e, consequentemente, maior é o tamanho amostra necessário para estima-los. As relações lineares envolvendo as variáveis relacionadas com o tamanho e o número de frutos por planta tem menor precisão. Para estimar o coeficiente de correlação entre variáveis produtivas do tomate cereja, com intervalo de confiança de 95% igual a 0,4, é necessário amostrar 275 plantas na estufa de 250m², e 200 plantas na estufa de 200m².

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the required sample size for estimation of the Pearson coefficient of correlation between cherry tomato variables. Two uniformity tests were set up in a protected environment in the spring/summer of 2014. The observed variables in each plant were mean fruit length, mean fruit width, mean fruit weight, number of bunches, number of fruits per bunch, number of fruits, and total weight of fruits, with calculation of the Pearson correlation matrix between them. Sixty eight sample sizes were planned for one greenhouse and 48 for another, with the initial sample size of 10 plants, and the others were obtained by adding five plants. For each planned sample size, 3000 estimates of the Pearson correlation coefficient were obtained through bootstrap re-samplings with replacement. The sample size for each correlation coefficient was determined when the 95% confidence interval amplitude value was less than or equal to 0.4. Obtaining estimates of the Pearson correlation coefficient with high precision is difficult for parameters with a weak linear relation. Accordingly, a larger sample size is necessary to estimate them. Linear relations involving variables dealing with size and number of fruits per plant have less precision. To estimate the coefficient of correlation between productivity variables of cherry tomato, with a confidence interval of 95% equal to 0.4, it is necessary to sample 275 plants in a 250m² greenhouse, and 200 plants in a 200m² greenhouse.
