RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar a dinâmica de fluidos computacional (DFC) para avaliar as condições de higiene e conforto, em função dos níveis de temperatura e concentração de amônia (NH3) durante a noite, em galpões avícolas comerciais no Brasil e em países com climas tropicais e subtropicais. Para isto, foram utilizados quatro modelos com diferentes posições de altura, cortina com entrada e saída de ar adotando a tipologia de instalação aberta, sem isolamento térmico. O modelo em DFC validado não apresentou diferenças estatísticas com os dados experimentais, o que torna possível usá-lo para prever o comportamento dos quatro casos propostos. Este modelo pode ser usado para a melhoria da condição interna das instalações de aves durante a noite podendo, também, ser uma ferramenta importante para reduzir o consumo de energia e criar melhores condições para a produção de aves com idade superior a 21 dias de idade.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to use computational fluids dynamics (CFD) to evaluate hygiene and comfort conditions in function of temperature level and ammonia (NH3) concentration during the night in commercial poultry houses used in Brazil and countries with tropical and subtropical climates. Four models with different curtain heights and different air inlet and outlet positions were used, adopting the open building typology without thermal insulation. The validated CFD model did not present statistical differences from the experimental data, making it possible to use this model to predict the behavior in the four proposed cases. This model can be used to improve the internal conditions of the poultry facilities during the night and could be an important tool to reduce energy consumption and generate better conditions for animal production of chicks over 21 days old.

ABSTRACT Broilers during the first phase should be protected from cold stress, especially in the winter, cold nights and early mornings. To protect animals, poultry producers have used different strategies, including the use of multilayer of curtain, to increase the thermal insulation and reduce heat losses, also decreasing the permeability to the external air. In this context it is important to give special attention to the indoor air quality of poultry sheds as part of a production under animal welfare parameters. This study was conducted in the municipality of Barbacena, MG, in Brazil, and aimed to assess air quality at the level of the chickens and workers, specifically concentrations of ammonia, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, in a poultry house naturally ventilated during the first phase of life of broilers in the winter period, and the influence of insulation level with side curtains on concentrations of ammonia. During the first experimental week, ammonia levels exceed acceptable values, and statistical difference was found between the concentrations of ammonia for different insulation levels with side curtains.

RESUMEN Los pollos de engorde durante la primera fase deben estar protegidos del estrés por frio, especialmente en el inverno, noches y madrugadas frías. Para proteger a los animales, los avicultores han utilizado diferentes estrategias, entre ellas está el uso de varias capas de cortinas para aumentar el nivel de aislamiento térmico y disminuir las pérdidas de calor, disminuyendo también la permeabilidad con el aire externo. En este contexto, es importante dar especial atención a la calidad del aire interno de los galpones avícolas como parte de una producción bajo parámetros de bienestar animal. El presente estudio fue realizado en el municipio de Barbacena, MG, en Brasil, y tuvo como objetivo evaluar la calidad del aire al nivel de los pollos y los trabajadores, específicamente de las concentraciones de amoniaco, dióxido de carbono y monóxido de carbono, en un galpón avícola naturalmente ventilado durante la primera fase de vida de pollos de engorde en el período de inverno, y la influencia del nivel de aislamiento con cortinas laterales sobre las concentraciones de amoniaco. Durante la primera semana experimental, los niveles de amoniaco sobrepasaron los valores aceptables, y se encontró diferencia estadística entre las concentraciones de amoniaco para los diferentes niveles de aislamiento con cortinas laterales.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, nesta pesquisa, avaliar o ambiente térmico interno de dois galpões de frangos de corte com diferentes sistemas de ventilação representativos da indústria de produção de aves de corte brasileira e sul-americana: (a) um com pressão negativa tipo túnel e (b) outro com ventilação lateral e pressão positiva. Parâmetros ambientais do conforto térmico, tais como temperatura de bulbo seco, umidade relativa e índice de temperatura e umidade, foram avaliados; mapas de temperaturas médias para as condições de dia e noite foram determinadas nas três primeiras semanas de vida das aves. Melhor uniformidade ambiental e condições de conforto térmico no interior do galpão com pressão negativa foram observadas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the internal thermal environment of two broiler barns featuring different ventilation systems representative of Brazilian and South American poultry production industry: (a) a negative-pressure tunnel and (b) a positive-pressure lateral ventilation system. Environmental parameters such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index were assessed; temperature maps for day and night average conditions were determined for the first three weeks of life. Better uniformity of the thermal environment and comfort conditions inside the negative-pressure tunnel were found.

Este estudo foi conduzido com o propósito de monitorar a emissão de amônia (NH3) de um galpão de frango de corte com ventilação mecânica e outro com ventilação natural (GVM e GVN, respectivamente) e, por fim, calcular seus fatores de emissão de NH3 (fNH3). A densidade de alojamento das aves foi 13.5 e 11.1 aves m-2 para o GVM e GVN, respectivamente. As aves foram removidas para o abate aos 43 dias e a cama consistiu de casca de café, em primeiro uso. As taxas de ventilação nos galpões foram calculadas com base no método do balanço de dióxido de carbono. Os valores de fNH3 obtidos foram 0.32 ± 0.10 e 0.27 ± 0.07 g ave-1 d-1 para o GVM e GVN, respectivamente, e estão de acordo com o que foi apresentado em outros estudos independentes, realizados em condições similares. O valor estimado de fNH3 em base anual foi 58 g ave-alocada-1 ano-1. Concluiu-se que o tipo de sistema de ventilação adotado em cada galpão não afetou, de modo significativo, a parametrização da equação de emissão no processo de modelagem. Os resultados validam a acurácia da metodologia de determinação da emissão de amônia para galpões nas condições brasileiras e contribuem para a formação de base de dados confiável de fatores de emissão em climas tropicais, quando aplicada em um número suficiente de galpões que seja representativo do cenário brasileiro.

This study was conducted with the aim of monitoring NH3 emissions from a mechanically and a naturally ventilated broiler house (MVB and NVB, respectively) and calculate their ammonia emission factors (fNH3). Bird stocking density was 13.5 and 11.1 birds m-2 for the MVB and NVB, respectively. The marketing age was 43 days and bedding consisted of dried coffee husks in its first time of use. Ventilation rates were calculated with the metabolic carbon dioxide mass balance method. Values of fNH3 were 0.32 ± 0.10 and 0.27 ± 0.07 g bird-1 d-1 for the MVB and NVB, respectively, and are in agreement to what was presented in other studies performed under similar conditions. The fNH3 estimated on yearly basis was 58 g bird-place-1 year-1. It was concluded that the different types of ventilation system between the studied broiler barns did not significantly affect emissions in the modeling process. The results obtained help providing reliable methodology for the determination of a solid database on NH3 emission factors for tropical conditions that can be used for future inventories, when performed in a sufficient number of barns that is representative for the Brazilian scenario.

Durante o processo de criação de frangos de corte a fase inicial ou fase de aquecimento se caracteriza por ser este o período mais delicado devido à imaturidade fisiológica das aves. Desta forma, os fatores ambientais se destacam por inferir, de forma direta, no crescimento, no desempenho zootécnico e na mantança da vida desses animais. Objetivou-se, com base nessas considerações estudar, com este trabalho, o efeito de três diferentes sistemas de ventilação mínima (por pressão positiva, negativa e natural) sobre as variáveis ambientais (temperatura do ar, umidade relativa e velocidade do ar) de galpões de frangos de corte, durante a fase de aquecimento. De acordo com os resultados verificou-se que o sistema de aquecimento utilizado não foi satisfatório para manter a temperatura do ar e a umidade relativa dentro de padrões considerados adequados, expondo as aves, assim, a períodos de estresse térmico por frio. Em contrapartida, não ocorreram influências negativas em relação às taxas de ventilação aplicadas para os dois sistemas de ventilação positiva e negativa. A velocidade do ar também se manteve em níveis considerados não estressores para as aves, no período de aquecimento.

During the creation process of poultry, the initial or heating phase, is characterized as the most delicate period due to physiological immaturity of the birds. Thus, environmental factors stand out to infer, directly, in the growth, on the performance and maintenance of life of these animals. Based on these considerations, the aim of this study was to study the effect of three different systems of minimum ventilation (positive pressure, negative and natural) on environmental variables (air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity) of broiler sheds during the heating phase. According to results obtained, it was verified that the heating system used was inadequate to maintain the air temperature and relative humidity within the standards deemed appropriate, thus exposing the birds to periods of heat stress by cold. In contrast, there were negative influences regarding ventilation rates applied to the two ventilation systems positive and negative. Wind velocity also remained at levels considered non-stressful for young chickens.

Nos últimos anos, as instalações destinadas à produção avícola no Brasil têm-se destacado pelo aumento da densidade de criação que visa a otimizar mão-de-obra, equipamentos, transporte, assistência técnica e, sobretudo, instalações. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar pesquisa sobre as principais características tipológicas dos aviários existentes na mesorregião do Agreste do Estado da Paraíba. Observou-se que os aviários são predominantemente concebidos em pequenas dimensões de largura e comprimento, com baixa densidade de alojamento. A grande maioria dos galpões está localizada na direção leste-oeste, com pequena distância entre os aviários, apresentando piso de concreto, cobertura em formato de duas águas, estrutura do telhado em madeira, telhas de barro, ausência de lanternim, pé-direito baixo, beirais pequenos e muretas altas, além de disporem de cobertura vegetal ou outros elementos adequados ao correto paisagismo circundante. Quanto aos equipamentos, observou-se que a principal fonte de aquecimento é de campânulas à lenha, além de bebedouros automáticos pendulares e comedouros manuais. Cerca de 50% dos galpões possuíam ventiladores, mas pequena percentagem desses estava associada a nebulizadores.

In the recent years, the installations destined for poultry production in Brazil have been remarkable due to increased bird density which aim to optimize man power, equipment, transport, technical assistance and over all installations. The objective of the present study was to conduct research on principal typological characteristics of poultry houses in the "Agreste" region of Paraiba State, Brazil. It was observed that the poultry houses are conceived in small dimensions of length and width with low housing density. The great majority of the sheds are located in the east-west direction, with short distances between poultry houses with concrete floor, roof tap with two slopes, wood covering structure, clay tiles, absence of the opening in the superior part of the roof, low height, small edges and tall wall, besides vegetal cover and other adequate elements of surrounding view. About the equipments, it was observed that the principal source of heating is firewood besides the automatic drinking fountains facilities and manual feeders. Approximately 50% of the sheds have ventilators, but a small percentage of them were associated with nebulization.
