In this study, we investigated the influence of two SNPs (rs846910 and rs12086634) of the HSD11B1 gene that encodes 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1(11β-HSD1), the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cortisol to cortisone, on variables associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome in 215 individuals of both sexes from southern Brazil. The HSD11B1 gene variants were genotyped using the TaqMan SNP genotyping assay. Glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were measured by standard automated methods. Significant results were found in women, with carriers of the G allele of SNP rs12086634 having higher glucose levels than non-carriers. Carriers of the A allele of SNP rs846910 had higher levels of HDL-cholesterol. The involvement of both polymorphisms as independent factors in determining the levels of glucose and HDL-cholesterol was confirmed by multiple regression analysis (β = 0.19 ± 0.09, p = 0.03 and β = 0.22 ± 0.10, p = 0.03, respectively). Our findings suggest that the HSD11B1SNPs studied may indirectly influence glucose and HDL-cholesterol metabolism in women, possibly through down-regulation of the HSD11B1 gene by estrogen.

O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a PSE no limiar ventilatório (LV) entre homens e mulheres. Participaram 17 homens (24,0 ± 3,3 anos) e 17 mulheres (22,5 ± 2,6 anos), submetidos a duas sessões experimentais com intervalo mínimo de 48 horas: (I) avaliação antropométrica e instruções referentes aos procedimentos e (II) teste máximo em esteira. Na análise estatística empregou-se teste t Student para verificar possíveis diferenças entre gêneros (p < 0,05). Não foram verificadas diferenças significativas entre homens e mulheres para a PSE LV (11,1 ± 1,8 e 12,1 ± 1,5, respectivamente). Apesar de as mulheres demonstrarem PSE superior em intensidade de exercício baseada em níveis absolutos, estas diferenças desaparecem quando homens e mulheres são testados em intensidade relativa de exercício. Conclui-se que homens e mulheres apresentam valores de PSE LV entre 12 e 13 ("leve" e "algo difícil") durante teste de esforço máximo.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) at ventilatory threshold (VT) during graded treadmill exercise between men and women. Participated 17 men (24.0 ± 3.3 years) and 17 women (22.5 ± 2.6 years) were submitted to two experimental sessions with a minimum interval of 48 hours: (I) anthropometric evaluation and instructions regarding the procedures, and (II) graded treadmill exercise. For statistical analysis, was employed used t Student test to verify possible differences between genders (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences between genders to RPE VT (11.7 ± 1.8 and 12.2 ± 1.5, respectively). Although women had a higher RPE to exercise intensity based on absolute levels, these differences were minimized or disappeared when men and women were compared at similar relative exercise intensity. The result of present study showed that men and women had a similar RPE VT between 12 and 13 ("light" and "something hard") during graded treadmill exercise.

A Fibromialgia (FM) pode limitar a execução das atividades da vida diária (AVD's) e causar impacto negativo na qualidade de vida (QV) destes pacientes. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar associações entre métodos diretos e indiretos para avaliar a capacidade funcional e a relação destes com algumas características da FM. Participaram do estudo 38 mulheres com diagnóstico de FM. A capacidade funcional foi avaliada através do Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), distância no teste de caminhada de 6 minutos (DTC6) e força de preensão manual (FPM). Aplicou-se o Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) para avaliar o impacto na qualidade de vida, a escala visual analógica para mensurar a dor, além da avaliação do índice de massa corporal e circunferência abdominal. Utilizou-se correlação de Pearson para dados paramétricos e de Spearman para não-paramétricos. Além disso, algumas regressões múltiplas foram realizadas. As pacientes apresentaram alta intensidade dolorosa (mediana de 9,5). As correlações encontradas foram: DTC6 versus HAQ (r=-0,55 p<0,01), DTC6 versus FPM (r=0,34 p<0,01), dor versus FPM (r=-0,41 p<0,01), dor versus HAQ (r=0,62 p<0,01) e dor versus FIQ (r=0,66 p<0,01). A intensidade dolorosa explicou uma variação de 40% na pontuação do HAQ e após a inclusão da DTC6, essa variação aumentou para 60%. Em conclusão, a dor parece comprometer a FPM, as AVD's e a QV destas pacientes. O menor desempenho na DTC6 foi explicado pelo aumento do índice de massa corporal. Em relação à interferência da dor, o HAQ parece ser um instrumento adequado para mensurar a capacidade funcional de mulheres com fibromialgia.

Fibromyalgia can limit activities of daily living (ADLs) performance and has a negative impact on the quality of life of these patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between direct and indirect methods for the assessment of functional capacity and their relationship with some features of fibromyalgia. Thirty-eight women with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia participated in the study. Functional capacity was assessed by the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), distance in the six-minute walk test (6MWT), and handgrip strength (HGS). Pain was rated on a visual analog scale. The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) was applied to assess the impact on quality of life. Body mass index and waist circumference were also evaluated. Pearson's correlation test was used for parametric data and Spearman's correlation test for nonparametric data. Multiple regressions were also performed. Pain intensity was high in the patients (median: 9.5). The 6MWT distance was correlated with HAQ score (r=-0.55, p<0.01) and HGS (r=0.34, p<0.01). Pain was correlated with HGS (r=-0.41, p<0.01), HAQ score (r=0.62, p<0.01), and FIQ (r =0.66, p<0.01). Pain intensity explained 40% of the variation in HAQ scores. This variation increased to 60% after inclusion of 6MWT distance. In conclusion, pain seems to compromise HGS, ADLs and quality of life in women with fibromyalgia. The lower performance in the 6MWT might be explained by high body mass index. Taking into account pain, the HAQ seems to be an appropriate tool for the assessment of functional capacity in women with fibromyalgia.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a qualidade de vida no trabalho (QVT) de colaboradores com diferentes níveis de instrução, utilizando-se de técnicas estatísticas uni e multivariada para a análise dos dados. Foi realizado por meio da aplicação do modelo de QVT proposto por Walton (1973) em 154 indivíduos - 84 homens e 70 mulheres - com diferentes níveis de instrução. Os resultados gerais indicaram que o critério ''compensação justa e adequada'' (53) apresentou o menor índice de satisfação adotado e ''relevância social'', o maior escore (69,1). Na análise de variância com α = 0,05; valor calculado de F = 1,96; P = 0,056, e valor crítico de F = 2,37, pode-se afirmar que não existe diferença significativa entre as médias de QVT dos nove níveis de instrução analisados. Quanto à primeira análise de correlação, esta obteve coeficiente de correlação igual a -0,128, não tendo sido verificada uma correlação significativa entre o valor geral da QVT dos indivíduos e o nível de instrução. Na segunda análise de correlação multivariada, foi verificado que o nível de instrução apresentou correlação significativa apenas com os critérios 1 e 7 de QVT, com valores respectivos de 0,2480 e 0,2849. Conclui-se que os colaboradores podem apresentar melhor ou pior QVT, independentemente de seu grau de instrução, indicando que todos os colaboradores são sensíveis às modificações e melhorias promovidas pela empresa no ambiente laboral.

The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of working life (QWL) in workers with different levels of education, through the use of uni- and multivariate statistical techniques to analyze the data. This study was carried out through the application of a QWL model proposed by Walton (1975) on 154 individuals (84 men and 70 women), with different educational levels. The general results indicated that the criterion ''fair and adjusted compensation'' (3.1) showed a lower dissatisfaction index and the criterion ''social relevance'' the lowest (3.74). In the analysis of variance with P = 0,05; calculated value of F = 1,96; P = 0,056 and critical value of F = 2,37, it is possible to affirm that there is no significant difference in the QWL mean among the 9 analyzed levels of instruction. Concerning the correlation analysis, the first analysis obtained a correlation value equal to -0.128, where a significant correlation between the QWL and the educational level of the individuals was not found. In the second correlation analysis, it was confirmed that the instruction level showed significant correlation only with criteria 1 and 7 of QWL with respective values of 0.2480 and 0.2849. It is possible to conclude that the collaborators may manifest a better or worse QWL, independently of their level of education. This also indicates that all the collaborators are sensitive to the modifications and innovations and improvements promoted by the company in the labor environment.
