Abstract Materials produced by additive manufacturing (AM) have been extremely related to literature. However, there is still unconsolidated knowledge about the fatigue life and respective mechanisms of initiation of cracks predominant in the VHCF regime for these materials. What has been observed in materials produced by conventional routes is that fatigue cracks tend to nucleate from intrinsic defects of the material located internally or in subsurface regions. The change in the evolution process of fatigue cracks leads to the formation of a characteristic morphology on the fracture surface, known as “fish-eye”. Another widespread aspect observed on the fracture surfaces is the formation of a fine granular area (FGA) nearby the initiation sites. This work aims to investigate the mechanisms of crack nucleation in VHCF of two distinct materials: conventional steel, DIN 34CrNiMo6 and AISI 316L stainless steel produced by L-DED. The ultrasonic tests were carried out at a frequency of 20±0,5 kHz and R= -1. The S-N curves were obtained and fracture surfaces were analyzed, fish-eye and FGA formation was verified. Resumo O estudo da relação entre fungos e insetos traz importantes contribuições para o conhecimento da biodiversidade fúngica e para o entendimento das interações ecológicas mutualísticas. Este estudo relata a ocorrência de uma comunidade de fungos filamentosos no trato digestivo (TD) de larvas minadoras de insetos do gênero Stenochironomus em riachos de dois biomas brasileiros. Os fungos foram obtidos do trato digestivo de larvas encontradas em troncos e folhas de riachos de baixa ordem na Floresta Amazônica e Cerrado no norte do Brasil. A comunidade fúngica foi triada para atividades xilanolíticas e celulolíticas. A diversidade de espécies fúngicas no TD de larvas possivelmente está relacionada à diversidade de dietas das espécies desse gênero e à diversidade de substratos nos ecossistemas. A diversidade e riqueza de espécies fúngicas foram influenciadas mais pelas diferenças ecológicas entre os locais do que pelos tipos de substratos em que foram coletados (tronco e folha). A maioria dos fungos no TD de larvas de Stenochironomus amostradas em folhas exibiu atividade enzimática celulolítica. Tais resultados reforçam que os micobiomas do DT de larvas de Stenochiromonus produzem enzimas que contribuem para o processo de decomposição de restos vegetais em seus hospedeiros.

Abstract The study of the relationship between fungi and insects brings important contributions to the knowledge of fungal biodiversity and to the understanding of mutualistic ecological interactions. This study reports the occurrence of a community of filamentous fungi in the digestive tract (DT) of mining insect larvae belonging to genus Stenochironomus in streams of two Brazilian biomes. Fungi were obtained from the digestive tract of larvae found on trunks and leaves of low-order streams in the Amazon Forest and Cerrado in the north of Brazil. The fungal community was screened for xylanolytic and cellulolytic activities. The diversity of fungal species in the DT of larvae is possibly related to the diversity of diets of species of that genus and the diversity of substrates in the ecosystems. The diversity and richness of fungal species were influenced by ecological differences between locations more than by the types of substrates in which they were collected (trunk and leaf). Most fungi in the DT of Stenochironomus larvae sampled in leaves exhibited cellulolytic enzyme activity. Such results stress that the mycobiomes of the DT of Stenochiromonus larvae produce enzymes that contribute to the process of breaking down plant remains in their hosts.

Resumo Biomas tropicais como o Cerrado brasileiro e a Floresta Amazônica apresentam uma grande diversidade de fungos e insetos. As interações entre esses organismos podem ser benéficas para ambos os parceiros. Em riachos, essas interações contribuem para a decomposição da serapilheira. O estudo do trato digestório (TD) de insetos como um habitat para microrganismos fúngicos é uma oportunidade para obtenção de linhagens fúngicas com potencial biotecnológico, podendo trazer luz para o entendimento das relações simbióticas entre esses organismos em florestas tropicais. Esse estudo investigou a comunidade fúngica do TD de larvas de Triplectides (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae) coletados em riachos de baixa ordem nos biomas Cerrado e Floresta Amazônica no Brasil. Foram obtidos 49 isolados fúngicos e identificados entre 32 espécies de 12 gêneros. O gênero Roussoella foi encontrado apenas no DT de insetos em riachos da Floresta Amazônica, enquanto sete gêneros ocorreram apenas no DT de insetos em riachos do Cerrado. O gênero Penicillium (40%) foi o mais frequente. No Cerrado, 78% foram produtoras de CMCase, mais que o dobro da Floresta Amazônica (35%). E 62% foram produtoras de xilanase, no Cerrado, e 71% na Floresta Amazônica. Nesse contexto, a comunidade fúngica do TD de larvas Triplectides pode desempenhar um papel importante na dieta de insetos por quebrar o material lignocelulósico.

Abstract Tropical biomes such as Brazilian Cerrado and Amazon Forest have a great diversity of fungi and insects. Interactions between these organisms can be beneficial to both partners. In streams, these interactions contribute to litter decomposition. Studying the digestive tract (DT) of shredder insects as a habitat for fungal microorganisms is an opportunity to obtain fungal strains with biotechnological potential, which may help to understand the symbiotic relationships between these organisms in tropical forests. This study investigated the fungal community in the DT of larvae of Triplectides (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae) collected in low-order streams in the Cerrado and Amazon Forest biomes in Brazil. Forty-nine fungal isolates were obtained and identified among 32 species and 12 genera. The genus Roussoella was only found in the DT of insects in Amazon Forest streams, while 7 genera only occurred in the DT of insects in Cerrado streams. The genus Penicillium (40%) was the most frequent. In the Cerrado, 78% were producers of CMCase, more than two-fold that in the Amazon Forest (35%). And 62% were producers of xylanase, in the Cerrado and 71% in the Amazon Forest. In this context, the fungal community in the DT of Triplectides larvae may play an important role in the insect diet by breaking down lignocellulosic material.

ABSTRACT The motion of a body can be expressed relative to the present configuration of the body, known as the relative motion description, besides the classical Lagrangian and the Eulerian descriptions. When the time increment from the present state is small enough, the nonlinear constitutive equations can be linearized relative to the present state so that the resulting system of boundary value problems becomes linear. This formulation is based on the well-known “small-on-large” idea, and can be implemented for solving problems with large deformation in successive incremental manner. In fact, the proposed method is a process of repeated applications of the well-known “small deformation superposed on finite deformation” in the literature. This article presents these ideas applied to thermoelastic materials with a brief comment on the exploitation of entropy principle in general. Some applications of such a formulation in numerical simulations are briefly reviewed and a numerical result is shown.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer as características físicas, químicas e nutricionais de frutos de Rubus sellowii (Rosáceas), conhecida como amora-preta, planta nativa principalmente do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. Para isso, foram selecionadas três populações diferentes desta planta e frutas foram analisadas por meio de umidade, cinza, acidez titulável, pH, lipídios, fibras, carboidratos, proteínas, carotenóides, licopeno, ácido ascórbico, aminograma e digestibilidade in vitro. As frutas apresentaram alta acidez (3,28 g por cento), cinzas e proteínas (1,02 e 0,93 g por cento) e maior ácido ascórbico (38,43 mg por 100 g) em comparação com as cultivares Rubus. Devido às propriedades nutricionais de Rubus sellowii , elas proporcionam benefícios para a saúde humana.

Abstract The aim of this study was to know the physical, chemical and nutritional characteristics of Rubus sellowii (Rosaceae) fruits, known as blackberry, native plant mainly to Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil. For this, three different populations of this plant were selected and the fruits were analyzed through moisture, ash, titratable acidity, pH, lipids, fibers, carbohydrates, proteins, carotenoids, lycopene, ascorbic acid, aminogram and in vitro digestibility. Fruits showed high acidity (3.28 percent), ash and protein (1.02 and 0.93 percent) and higher ascorbic acid (38.43 mg per 100 g) if compared to Rubus cultivars. Due to Rubus sellowii nutritional properties, they provide benefits to human health.

ABSTRACT Duguetia furfuracea (Annonaceae) is a shrub found in the Brazilian Cerrado that is used in popular medicine as an antirheumatic, for wound healing, treatment of kidney pain and against pediculosis. The aim of this study was to analyze the extraction of leaves of Duguetia furfuracea, using supercritical CO2, ethanol and hexane as solvents. For the supercritical extraction, an experimental planning 23 with triplicates of the central point was used to evaluate the effects of temperature (313-333 K), pressure (15-23 MPa) and volumetric flow rate (3-6 mL min-1) on the extraction yield, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared with extracts obtained by Soxhlet extraction. The effects of the variables on the extraction yield were positive and the pressure had greater influence. However, the highest performances, total phenolic content and antioxidant activities were obtained by the Soxhlet method. The mathematical model based on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory of adsorption correlated satisfactorily the experimental values of the supercritical extraction.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta os resultados de um estudo paramétrico realizado com o objetivo de quantificar o tanto que erros na etapa de projeto relacionados com a consideração da ação do vento podem comprometer a resposta em serviço e a segurança de edifícios de concreto armado. Usando-se um modelo arquitetônico como referência e variando-se o número de pavimentos do edifício, a segurança estrutural foi avaliada como uma função da intensidade da ação do vento. Os resultados mostraram que mesmo para edifícios baixos, com 10 pavimentos, a desconsideração da ação do vento pode comprometer significativamente o comportamento e a segurança e que no caso de edifícios mais esbeltos, com até 30 pavimentos, pode levar a resultados catastróficos, como a ruína da estrutura através de colapso progressivo.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results from a parametric study carried in order to quantify how far errors in the design stage related to the consideration of the wind action may put at risk the response and safety of reinforced concrete buildings. Using an architectural model as reference and varying the number of floors of the building, the structural safety was evaluated as a function of the wind action intensity. Results showed that even for low-rise buildings, with 10 floors, ignoring the wind action can significantly jeopardize their behaviour and safety. Yet, for slenderer buildings, up to 30 floors, it can lead to catastrophic results, as the ruin of the structure by progressive collapse.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the association between physical activity levels of children and adolescents and the perception of their parents or guardians regarding physical activity of their children. Method: A total of 306 subjects, aged eight to eighteen years, living in a city in southern Brazil, participated in the study. The physical activity of schoolchildren was measured using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children. The Chi-squared test examined possible associations between the independent and dependent variables. Poisson regression was used to calculate the prevalence ratio and confidence intervals of 95%. Results: The prevalence of schoolchildren who were insufficiently physically active was 86.6%. The incidence of physically active schoolchildren was lower in females. Both the children who perceived themselves as more physically active than their peers and those with guardians who perceived them as active, were more active. Conclusions: Intervention programs to promote physical activity in schoolchildren should consider the perception of the schoolchildren and their parents.

Introdução: Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a associação entre níveis de atividade física de crianças e adolescentes e a percepção de seus pais ou responsáveis quanto à atividade física dos seus filhos. Método: Participaram do estudo um total de 306 indivíduos, com idades entre 8 e 18 anos, de uma cidade do sul do Brasil. A atividade física dos escolares foi mensurada por meio do Questionário de Atividade Física para Crianças. O teste do qui-quadrado analisou as possíveis associações entre as variáveis independentes e dependentes. A regressão de Poisson foi utilizada para calcular a razão de prevalência com um intervalo de confiança de 95%. Resultados: A prevalência de escolares insuficientemente ativos fisicamente foi de 86.6%. A ocorrência de escolares fisicamente ativos foi menor em garotas. Tanto as crianças que se perceberam como mais ativas fisicamente do que os seus colegas, quanto aquelas com pais que as perceberam como ativas, eram mais ativas. Conclusão: Programas de intervenção para promover a atividade física em escolares devem considerar a percepção dos alunos e seus pais.

Introducción: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar la asociación entre los niveles de actividad física de niños y adolescentes y la percepción de sus padres o tutores sobre la actividad física de sus hijos. Método: Un total de 306 sujetos, entre ocho y dieciocho años, del sur de Brasil, participaron en el estudio. La actividad física de los escolares se midió a través del Cuestionario de Actividad Física para Niños. La prueba de Chi-cuadrado examinó las posibles asociaciones entre las variables independientes y dependientes. La regresión de Poisson fue utilizada para calcular la razón de prevalencia e intervalos de confianza de 95%. Resultados: La prevalencia de los escolares que estaban insuficientemente físicamente activos fue del 86.6%. La incidencia en de los escolares físicamente activos fue menor en las mujeres. Tanto los niños que perciben a sí mismos como más activos físicamente que sus compañeros y los que tienen los padres que los perciben como activos, fueron más activos. Conclusiones: Los programas de intervención para promover la actividad física en escolares deben considerar la percepción de los alumnos y sus padres.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a promising medical imaging technique that uses light to capture real-time cross-sectional images from biological tissues in micrometer resolution. Commercially available optical coherence tomography systems are employed in diverse applications, including art conservation and diagnostic medicine, notably in cardiology and ophthalmology. Application of this technology in the brain may enable distinction between white matter and gray matter, and obtainment of detailed images from within the encephalon. We present, herein, the in vivo implementation of OCT imaging in the rat brain striatum. For this, two male 60-day-old rats (Rattus norvegicus, Albinus variation, Wistar) were stereotactically implanted with guide cannulas into the striatum to guide a 2.7-French diameter high-definition OCT imaging catheter (Dragonfly™, St. Jude Medical, USA). Obtained images were compared with corresponding histologically stained sections to collect imaging samples. A brief analysis of OCT technology and its current applications is also reported, as well as intra-cerebral OCT feasibility on brain mapping during neurosurgical procedures.

RESUMOAplicações de herbicidas de forma inadequada podem resultar em falhas no controle das plantas daninhas e/ou intoxicação da cultura, ocasionando em perda de produtividade. Nesta pesquisa foram avaliados os efeitos da altura da barra porta-bicos na distribuição da calda para o controle de plantas daninhas, influenciando a intoxicação do feijoeiro e a produtividade da cultura. Foram realizados experimentos em condições de laboratório e de campo. Em laboratório, avaliou-se o desempenho das pontas de pulverização TT 11002 de jato plano nas alturas de 0,20, 0,30, 0,40 e 0,50 m, em relação à superfície do alvo. No campo, as mesmas alturas foram avaliadas nas aplicações dos herbicidas fomesafen, fluazifop-p-butil e fomesafen + fluazifop-p-butil. Observou-se relação inversa entre a altura da barra e o coeficiente de variação dos perfis. Melhor eficiência da mistura em tanque de fluazifop-p-butil + fomesafen foi obtida com altura de 0,50 m do alvo. Este tratamento resultou em melhor controle das plantas daninhas, menor intoxicação do feijoeiro e melhores índices produtivos da cultura.

ABSTRACTInadequate herbicide application can result in failures in weed control and/or poisoning of the crops, resulting in yield losses. In this research were assessed the effects of the sprayer nozzle boom height in the distribution of the spray solution for weed control, influencing intoxication of beans and crop yield. Experiments were conducted in laboratory and field conditions. In laboratory, the performance of flat spray tip TT 11002 was assessed at heights 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50 meters with respect to the target surface. In the field the same heights were assessed in applications of herbicides fomesafen, fluazifop-P-butyl and fomesafen + fluazifop-P-butyl. There was an inverse relationship between the height of the spray boom and the coefficients of variation of the patterns. The mixture better efficiency in a tank of fluazifop-P-butyl + fomesafen was obtained with the height of 0.50 m from the target. This treatment resulted in better weed control, lower poisoning of the bean plants and better crop yield rates.

Evidências experimentais indicam que tanto o índice de retangularidade dos pilares quanto as condições de contorno da ligação podem afetar a resistência última à punção. Este artigo apresenta aspectos gerais sobre estas situações e, através da análise de resultados experimentais de ensaios em 131 lajes, avalia a precisão e a adequabilidade das recomendações apresentadas pelas normas ABNT NBR 6118, Eurocode 2, ACI 318 e fib Model Code 2010. Os resultados experimentais mostraram uma tendência de redução do nível de segurança das estimativas normativas, à medida que o índice de retangularidade aumenta, chegando-se em alguns casos a superestimar a resistência à punção. Por fim, são sugeridas adaptações nas equações da norma brasileira e do MC2010 buscando eliminar esta tendência de resultados inseguros.

Experimental evidence indicates that both the column rectangularity index and the boundary conditions of the connection may affect the ultimate punching resistance. This paper presents general aspects of these topics and, through the analysis of experimental results of tests on 131 slabs, evaluates the accuracy and suitability of recommendations presented by ABNT NBR 6118, Eurocode 2, ACI 318 and fib Model Code 2010. Experimental results showed that the security level of normative estimates trend to reduce as the column rectangularity increases, and in some cases, the punching resistance was overestimated. Finally, adjustments are suggested in equations presented by NBR 6118 and MC2010 in order to eliminate this trend of unsafe results.

El síndrome de Williams-Beuren (SWB), también conocido como síndrome de Williams, es un síndrome de deleción de genes contiguos de la región 7q.11.23. Se caracteriza por dimorfismo facial típico asociado a anomalías cardiovasculares, personalidad amigable, hiperacusia y deficiencia intelectual. El diagnóstico del SWB es confirmado por la detección de microdeleción a partir de las diferentes técnicas de citogenética molecular: FISH, marcadores polimórficos o MLPA. Este estudio evaluó el cociente intelectual verbal y manipulativo, así como las habilidades visuoespaciales en niños y adultos con SWB. El grupo estuvo formado por 31 pacientes con SWB (19 de sexo masculino y 12 de sexo femenino), cuyas edades variaron entre 9 y 26 años (media 14.45 años). Todos los pacientes tenían el diagnóstico confirmado molecularmente. Los test utilizados fueron las escalas WISC-III, WAIS-III y el Test Figuras Complejas Rey-Osterrieth. Los resultados indicaron un cociente intelectual que osciló de 51 a 86 (media 63), distribuido así: 22 con deficiencia intelectual leve, 4 con deficiencia intelectual moderada, 4 limítrofes, 1 en la media inferior. Todos los pacientes presentaron déficit visuoespacial. Los resultados sugieren que el razonamiento no verbal, la percepción visuoespacial, la representación espacial, la memoria de trabajo, la planificación motora y las funciones ejecutivas están muy comprometidos en el grupo estudiado.

The Williams-Beuren syndrome (SWB), also known as Williams syndrome, is a contiguous gene deletion of the region 7q.11.23. The main clinical characteristics are typical faces, supravalvular aortic stenosis, failure to thrive, short stature, transient neonatal hypercalcemia, delayed language, friendly personality, hyperacusis and intellectual disability. The diagnosis of SWB is confirmed by the detection of micro deletion by different techniques of molecular cytogenetics, FISH, MLPA or polymorphic markers. This study assessed the verbal intelligence quotient (IQ) and performance and visuo-spatial skills in children and adults with WBS. The composed group was of 31 WBS patients (19 M and 12 F), whose ages ranged from 9 to 26 years (M 14.45 y). All patients had the diagnosis confirmed molecularly. The tests used were the WISC-III, WAIS-III and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test. The results indicated a total IQ ranged from 51 to 86 (M 63): 22 with mild intellectual disability, 4 with moderate intellectual disability, 4 borderlines and 1 below the normal media. All patients had marked visual-spatial deficits. The results suggest nonverbal reasoning, visuo-spatial perception, spatial representation, working memory, motor planning and executive functions are very affected in this group.

Toxoplasmose é uma das mais comuns zoonoses parasitárias do mundo. Infecções em seres humanos e em animais variam nas diferentes áreas geográficas influenciadas pelas condições ambientais. A soroprevalência da infecção por Toxoplasma gondii em bovinos no Brasil varia de 1,03 a 71,0%. O estudo transversal foi realizado em 58 de um total de 453 propriedades na região Sul Fluminense do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Vacas leiteiras acima de 3 anos de idade (n=589) foram selecionadas para coleta de sangue e a detecção de anticorpos anti-T. gondii foi feita pelo teste de imunofluorescência indireta (IFI) com titulação inicial de 1:16 e títulos > 64 foram considerados positivos. Após análise univariada dos fatores de risco, gatos em contato com bovinos, em contato com a água de beber dos animais e o número de gatos foram associados com a soroprevalência de T. gondii. A regressão logística demonstrou que o número maior de gatos (>3) teve um risco duas vezes maior (p=0,0138) que propriedades que tinham um número menor de gatos (1-2). Em contraste, a presença de galinhas foi considerada um fator de proteção (p=0,025).

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic zoonoses throughout the world. Infection in man and animals varies in different geographical areas influenced by many environmental conditions. Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in cattle in Brazil ranges from 1.03 to 71%. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 58 out of 453 farms in the South Fluminense Paraiba Valley, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over 3-year-old cattle (n=589) from dairy herds were selected for blood collection and detection of anti-T. gondii antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFA) with initial titration of 1:16; titers > 64 were considered positive. Univariate analysis of risk factors showed that cats in contact with cattle, cats in contact with drinking water, and number of cats were associated with T. gondii seroprevalence. Logistic regression revealed a two-fold increased risk for infection of cattle (p=0.0138) through larger number of cats (>3) compared with low numbers of cats (1-2) on the farm. In contrast, the presence of chickens was considered a protective factor (p=0.025).

Dor persistente é um problema de saúde frequente no idoso e sua prevalência varia de 45 a 80%. Doenças crônicas, como depressão, distúrbios cardiovasculares, câncer e osteoporose tem alta prevalência em indivíduos idosos e aumentam o risco de desenvolver dor crônica. Nestes indivíduos, a presença de dor está associada a distúrbios do sono, prejuízo funcional, diminuição da sociabilidade e maior procura dos serviços de saúde, com o consequente aumento dos custos de saúde. Pacientes com Alzheimer têm uma capacidade discriminativa dolorosa normal e uma experiência afetiva e emocional da dor mais atenuada quando comparados com outros tipos de demência. Muitos pacientes têm déficits de linguagem e não podem descrever adequadamente as características de sua dor. Em casos avançados, torna-se difícil determinar se a dor está realmente presente ou não. Desta forma, a avaliação destes doentes deve ser realizada de forma sistemática. Há três formas de se avaliar a dor: questionários diretos, observação direta do comportamento ou entrevistas diretas com os cuidadores ou informantes. Nos últimos anos muitas escalas e questionários para dor foram publicados e validados especificamente para a população idosa. Alguns são específicos para pacientes com declínio cognitivo, permitindo que a evolução da dor possa ser conduzida de uma forma estruturada e reprodutível. O passo seguinte é se determinar o tipo de síndrome dolorosa e se discutir as bases do manejo farmacológico. O uso de múltiplas medicações e a presença de comorbidades exige o uso de pequenas doses e impõem contra-indicações para algumas classes de drogas. A abordagem multidisciplinar é a regra no seguimento a longo prazo destes doentes.

Persistent pain is a frequent health problem in the elderly. Its prevalence ranges from 45% to 80%. Chronic diseases, such as depression, cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis have a higher prevalence in aged individuals and increase the risk of developing chronic pain. The presence of pain is known to be associated with sleep disorders in these patients, as well as functional impairment, decreased sociability and greater use of the health system, with consequent increase in costs. Alzheimer's disease patients seem to have a normal pain discriminative capacity and they may probably have weaker emotional and affective experience of pain when compared to other types of dementia. Many patients have language deficits and thus cannot properly describe its characteristics. In more advanced cases, it becomes even difficult to determine whether pain is present or not. Therefore, the evaluation of these patients should be performed in a systematic way. There are three ways to measure the presence of pain: by direct questioning (self-report), by direct behavioral observation and by interviews with caregivers or informants. In recent years, many pain scales and questionnaires have been published and validated specifically for the elderly population. Some are specific to patients with cognitive decline, allowing pain evaluation to be conducted in a structured and reproducible way.
