Argumentos científicos favoráveis à aplicação do exercício físico como intervenção sobre “envelhecimento” insistem em se apoiar num conceito de saúde biológico. Considerando a hegemonia desse discurso na Educação Física, questiona-se em que medida deve-se aceitar que a relação saúde/envelhecimento permaneça resumida à mera busca pela manutenção de capacidades fisiológicas? O objetivo foi analisar as problematizações produzidas sobre a relação saúde e exercício físico por um grupo de mulheres fisicamente ativas da cidade do Recife, Pernambuco-Brasil, tendo como cenário suas opiniões sobre o processo de envelhecimento. Quarenta e cinco fisiculturistas amadoras foram selecionadas a partir da técnica snowball sample. Elas responderam individualmente um roteiro de entrevista com imagens seguindo a técnica photo elicitation. Utilizou-se a análise de discurso proposta por Foucault. Verificou-se que o grupo compreende a relação saúde/envelhecimento como forma de construir identidades, ultrapassando a visão negativa da velhice como processo negativo vital. O medo de envelhecer denota a presença de autocontrole centrado nas práticas de saúde ao longo da vida. O exercício físico exerce um papel que transcende o mero controle de variáveis biológicas, sendo um recurso para fortalecer a experiência de se ver e se sentir mais jovem.

Scientific arguments in favour of applying physical exercise as an intervention on "aging" insists on relying on the biological concept of health. Considering the hegemony of this concept in physical education, the present study questions in what extent it must be accepted that the relationship between health/aging remains summarized in the mere search for maintaining physiological capabilities? The aim was to analyse the problematizations on the relationship between health and exercise in a group of physically active women from the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, in the context of aging process. Forty-five amateur bodybuilders were selected utilizing the sample snowball technique. They answered an interview guide with pictures according to the photo elicitation technique, individually. It was utilized the speech analysis proposed by Foucault. The group understands the relationship health/aging as a way to build identities, overcoming the negative perception of old age as vital and negative process. The fear of aging denotes the presence of self-centred healthcare practices carried over the years. Physical exercise plays a role that transcends the mere control of biological variables, being a resource to strengthen the experience to look and feel younger.

Procuramos desvelar os sentidos bioascéticos na construção da beleza corporal feminina e as compreensões de poder inerentes a eles. A pesquisa foi realizada em seis academias de ginástica da cidade do Recife com 30 mulheres praticantes de exercício físico. As entrevistas foram realizadas individualmente através de um roteiro composto por imagens. A técnica de análise de discurso seguiu a linha arqueológica foucaultiana. Identificamos três principais sentidos bioascéticos: beleza como segurança ontológica, como distinção social e como forma de anabolizar a vida. Para as entrevistadas a produção da beleza representa dominação nas relações sociais e construção de sentido de vida autônoma. Conclui-se que "anabolizar a vida" representa uma configuração existencial peculiar da cultura somática.

We seek to discover women's understandings on construction of physical beauty and the concepts of power inherent in this process. The survey was conducted in six gym clubs in the city of Recife with 30 exercising women. The interviews were conducted individually using a script composed by images. We identified three bioascetic main senses: beauty as ontological security, as social distinction and as autonomy of the self. The production of beauty represents domination in social relations and a way of building a sense of autonomous life. It is concluded that to live "life in steroids" is setting a new peculiar way of existence in somatic culture.

Tratamos de descubrir los significados bioascéticos en la construcción de la belleza física y la comprensión femenina de poder inherente a ellos. La encuesta fue realizada en seis gimnasios de la ciudad de Recife con 30 mujeres. Las entrevistas fueron realizadas individualmente por un guión compuesto por imágenes. La técnica de análisis ha seguido la línea arqueológica foucaultiana. La producción de la belleza representa la dominación en las relaciones sociales y la construcción de un sentido de la vida autónoma. Se concluye que "la vida anabolizada" representa una configuración existencial peculiar de la cultura somática.

Atualmente a valorização da magreza tem contribuído para a formação de sujeitos lipofóbicos pautados num regime de verdade sobre o corpo que expressa ideais biopolíticos de maximização econômica. Recorremos à teoria de Foucault para analisar as formas de problematização produzidas e reproduzidas pelos sujeitos lipofóbicos acerca do corpo gordo, a partir das falas de 30 mulheres praticantes de exercício físico em academias de ginástica da cidade do Recife. Para coletar os discursos utilizamos um roteiro de entrevista composto por imagens (photo elicitation). A análise seguiu a proposta arqueológica foucaultiana. Os pensamentos sobre o corpo gordo revelaram três manifestações da lipofobia (medo da gordura, medo de engordar e medo de ser improdutivo). O discurso médico, a mídia e a moda produzem discursos e práticas que desencadeiam efeitos sociais de lipofobia. Os resultados demonstram a necessidade de expandir as investigações sobre a produção de verdades acerca do corpo e seus possíveis regimes de existência.

Currently, the valuation of thinness has contributed to the formation of lipophobic subjects oriented in a regimen of truth that expresses biopolitical ideals. In this study we used Foucault's theory to analyze how lipophobic subjects produced and reproduced thoughts about body fat, from the speech of 30 women-exercising in gym clubs of the city of Recife. To collect the discourses we used an interview guide composed of images (photo elicitation). The analysis followed Foucault's archaeological proposal. Thoughts on the fat body showed three manifestations of lipophobic attitudes (fear of fat, fear of fat and fear of being unproductive). The medical discourse, media and fashion produces discourses and practices that triggers social lipophobic effects. The results demonstrate the need to expand investigations into the production of truths about the body and their possible systems of existence.
