ABSTRACT: With advancements in coffee cultivation, several traits may be considered in selection of plants, which must exhibit a set of favorable characteristics. The outturn index, defined as the relationship between the mass of mature fruit and processed beans, emerges as a key factor influencing productivity. This study characterized the outturn over two harvests of 57 clones marketed in the public domain and 10 registered cultivars. The analysis considers the effects of genotypes, measurements, and genetic progress achieved through plant selection. According to the maturation cycle of each clone, washed samples of cherry coffee were collected considering a completely randomized factorial design for characterization of the effects of genotypes, years, and the genotype × years (GY) interaction. The drying, peeling, and the outturn index were individually assessed. Despite the significant effects of the GY interaction, genotypes demonstrated minimal alterations in their ranking across measurements. Clones with higher outturn, including LB30, BRS1216, LB12, N7, LB10, LB20, BRS3220, and AS5, exhibited an average outturn of 25.51%, reflecting a gain of 12.17%. Conversely, clones with lower outturn, such as BG180, GJ30, GJ20, AS7, AS10, P42, N1, and P60, had an average of 19.15%, indicating a reduction of 14.02% compared to the general mean. Analyzing the distribution of the outturn values, 19.4%, 62.7%, and 17.9% of genotypes were classified as high, medium, and low outturn, respectively, providing valuable insights for optimal cultivation strategies. RESUMO: Com o avanço da cafeicultura, múltiplas características devem ser consideradas na seleção de plantas, que devem apresentar um conjunto de atributos favoráveis. O rendimento, definido como a relação de massas entre os frutos maduros e os grãos processados, é um importante componente da produtividade. Este estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar o rendimento ao longo de duas colheitas de 57 clones comercializados em domínio público e 10 cultivares registradas. A análise considera efeitos de genótipos, medições e estimativas de ganhos com a seleção. De acordo com o ciclo de maturação de cada clone, amostras de café cereja foram colhidas considerando um delineamento fatorial inteiramente ao acaso para a caracterização dos efeitos de genótipos, anos e interação genótipo × anos (GA). A secagem, o descascamento e o rendimento foram avaliados individualmente. Apesar dos efeitos significativos da interação GA, os genótipos apresentaram pequenas mudanças no ordenamento de uma medição para a outra. Clones com maior rendimento, entre eles, LB30, BRS1216, LB12, N7, LB10, LB20, BRS3220 e AS5 apresentaram rendimento médio de 25,51% associado a estimativas de ganho de 12,17%. Por outro lado, clones de menor rendimento, como BG180, GJ30, GJ20, AS7, AS10, P42, N1 e P60 tiveram uma média de 19,15% associada a uma redução de 14,02%. A partir da distribuição dos valores, 19,4, 62,7 e 17,9% dos genótipos apresentaram rendimento classificados como alto, médio e baixo, subsidiando o melhor cultivo dos genótipos avaliados. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a expressão de autoincom-patibilidade gametofítica em uma população de melhoramento do cafeeiro Coffea canephora, para fornecer subsídios ao manejo e ao desenvolvimento de novas cultivares. Para tanto, foram realizadas 550 polinizações in vitro entre 62 plantas matrizes, das quais 27 foram da variedade botânica conilon e 35 da robusta. Foram identificados 32 genótipos compatíveis com todos os testadores previamente conhecidos, o que indica a existência de novos grupos de compatibilidade. A partir desses resultados, foram realizadas hibridações em delineamento em dialelo completo com cruzamentos recíprocos para caracterizar novas plantas testadoras. Com base na resposta de compatibilidade com as plantas testadoras, os genótipos foram agrupados nos seguintes seis grupos: grupo I, 11 (17,74%) genótipos; grupo II, 13 (20,97%); grupo III, 6 (9,68%); grupo IV, 9 (14,52%); grupo V, 8 (12,90%); e grupo VI, 15 (24,19%). Os genótipos da variedade botânica robusta apresentam maior frequência de plantas no grupo de compatibilidade VI e maior variabilidade genética, enquanto os da variedade conilon mostram maior frequência de plantas no grupo de compatibilidade II. A identificação de novos grupos de compatibilidade fornece subsídios para novas práticas de manejo que buscam aumentar a eficiência da polinização pelo favorecimento natural de cruzamentos totalmente compatíveis.

Abstract The objective of this work was to characterize the expression of gametophytic self-incompatibility in a Coffea canephora breeding population, to assist in the management and development of new cultivars. For that purpose, 550 in vitro pollinations were carried out among 62 parent plants, of which 27 were from the conilon botanical variety and 35 from the robusta. Thirty-two genotypes compatible with all previously known testers were identified, suggesting the existence of new compatibility groups. From these results, hybridizations were carried out in a complete diallel design with reciprocal crosses to characterize new test plants. Based on the compatibility response with the test plants, the genotypes were clustered into the six following groups: group I, 11 (17.74%) genotypes; group II, 13 (20.97%); group III, 6 (9.68%); group IV, 9 (14.52%); group V, 8 (12.90%); and group VI, 15 (24.19%). The genotypes of the botanical variety robusta show a higher frequency of plants in compatibility group VI and a greater genetic variability, whereas those of the conilon variety have a higher frequency of plants in compatibility group II. The identification of new compatibility groups assists in new management practices that seek to increase the efficiency of pollination by favoring, through natural means, fully compatible crosses.

RESUMO: O ganho com a seleção é um dos critérios mais importantes para avaliar a eficiência de programas de melhoramento de plantas. O objetivo desse trabalho é quantificar a associação entre o ganho de seleção estimado em condições experimentais e o ganho de seleção realizado em campo, buscando quantificar a eficiência do melhoramento do Coffea canephora. Para isso, foram considerados experimentos iniciados com a hibridação direcionada para obtenção de progênies no ano de 2004, a avaliação de testes de progênies em condições experimentais no período de 2005 a 2012, e avaliações em diferentes ambientes da Amazônia Ocidental no período de 2012 a 2018. De uma população composta por 288 indivíduos estruturados em nove progênies de irmãos completos foram selecionados 12 genótipos com amplitude de 127,70 a -19,19% em suas estimativas de ganho com a seleção, para serem avaliados em quatro ambientes da Amazônia Ocidental. O ambiente que apresentou maior correlação entre os valores genéticos preditos e o ganho realizado foi Ouro Preto do Oeste - RO (0,67), local em que as plantas foram selecionadas, seguido pelos ambientes de Alta Floresta D´Oeste - RO (0,44), Rio Branco - AC (0,43) e Porto Velho - RO (0,37). Avaliações em condições experimentais mostraram que os efeitos devido aos desvios de dominância foram aproximadamente três vezes maiores do que os efeitos aditivos. Nove clones apresentaram maiores estimativas de ganho em condições experimentais e nos ensaios de campo, e dois clones apresentaram menores estimativas em ambas condições. O clone G17-P7 apresentou altas estimativas de ganho em condições experimentais e baixo desempenho em campo. A seleção em único ambiente esteve positivamente correlacionada com o desempenho dos cafeeiros em campo (r=0,55), permitindo reduzir a população de melhoramento original em um conjunto de clones de maior potencial agronômico.

ABSTRACT: Gain from selection is an important criterion in quantifying the efficiency of breeding programs. This study quantified the selection gain estimated under experimental conditions and realized gain achieved in the field, seeking to interpret the efficiency of the Coffea canephora selection. For that purpose, we considered experiments that began in 2004 with directed hybridizations to obtain new hybrid progenies. From a breeding population composed of 288 hybrid individuals, 12 genotypes were selected in experimental conditions from 2005 to 2012, with amplitude in the estimated gains from 127.70 to−19.19%. Those genotypes were evaluated from 2012 to 2018 in clonal tests in four environments of the Western Amazon. The environment that exhibited the greatest correlation between the predicted genetic values and the realized genetic gain observed in the field was the environment of Ouro Preto do Oeste, RO (0.67), the location in which the plants were selected, followed by the environments of Alta FlorestaD´Oeste, RO (0.44), Rio Branco, AC (0.43), and Porto Velho, RO (0.37).Experimental conditions showed that the effect due to dominance deviations was approximately three times greater than the additive effect. Nine clones exhibited higher genetic gains in the experimental conditions and at field, and two clones exhibited lower estimated gains and lower field performance.The clone G17-P7 exhibited high genetic gain under experimental conditions and low field performance. The selection in experimental conditions was positively correlated with plant performance in the field (r=0.55), which allows reduction of the original breeding population to a set of more promising clones to be grown in multiple environments, optimizing time and resources.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the beverage quality of Coffea canephora genotypes in different environments of the western Amazon to assist plant selection and new cultivar development. To analyze beverage quality, samples of cherry coffee beans were collected separately for each genotype from clonal competition trials installed in the municipalities of Ouro Preto do Oeste, Alta Floresta do Oeste, Porto Velho, and Ariquemes in Rondônia State and Rio Branco in Acre State (Brazil). The beverage quality was assessed using the Robusta Cupping Protocol, which attribute to each genotype a score in a range from 0 to 100, highlighting nuances. Analysis of variance and principal components using reference points were used to quantify genotype x environment interaction (G x E). The analysis of variance indicated that genotypic and G x E interaction effects were significant (p < 0.01). By using a centroid dispersion method, we could identify four clones of low, eight of specific (to favorable or unfavorable environments), and seven of broad adaptability to the environments. The clones BRS 2314, 11, and 17 had average quality scores above 80 in all environments, with potential for specialty coffee production. The clones BRS 1216, BRS 3220, and BRS 3193 presented unstable behavior, with beans of higher quality in some of the evaluated environments. Such inconsistency in clone behavior is caused by unpredictable changes in plant performance in different environments. Our results indicate that both genotypic (clones) and G x E interaction effects are important for the expression of coffee beverage quality. However, the clones BRS 3213, BRS 3210, and BRS 2299 had less prominent nuances, with lower potential for specialty coffee production.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to optimize in vitro pollination and fluorescence microscopy procedures to characterize the gametophytic self-incompatibility of Coffea canephora genotypes. For that purpose, 115 in vitro pollinations were carried out among 30 parent plants of the Conilon (17) and Robusta (13) botanical varieties. Tester plants of compatibility groups I, II, and III were used as pollen grain donors. On the day of anthesis, pollen grains of the donor genotypes were transferred in vitro to one of the sides of the bifid stigma of each receptor flower. After 30 hours, the development of the pollen tubes was evaluated in fluorescence microscopy. Eleven genotypes (37%) were classified in compatibility Group I, thirteen (43%) in Group II, and six (20%) in Group III. In vitro pollination allowed reduction in the time necessary to diagnose compatibility, without exhibiting contamination caused by the presence of pollen grains of non-donor plants.

RESUMO: O desenvolvimento de novas cultivares de Coffea canephora fundamenta-se na caracterização do comportamento diferenciado dos clones em diferentes locais de cultivo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a interação genótipo x ambientes visando selecionar clones de adaptação ampla e específica à diferentes ambientes da Amazônia Ocidental. Doze clones com características híbridas das variedades botânicas Conilon e Robusta e quatro clones provenientes de polinização aberta tiveram seu desempenho avaliado em comparação com quatro testemunhas. Os métodos utilizados para quantificar a interação genótipo x ambientes foram o estimador não paramétrico de Lin & Binns e a dispersão do método centroide. A análise de variância indicou que os efeitos de genótipos, de ambiente e da interação G x A foram significativos (p<0,01). O índice de qualidade ambiental (Ij) permitiu classificar três ambientes favoráveis em relação a sua contribuição para o desempenho das plantas. Os genótipos híbridos 16, 10, 13, 9 e 14 apresentaram menores índices de Pi, tendo sido ranqueados como mais estáveis, apresentando produtividade média superior ao desempenho das testemunhas. Cinco clones de baixa adaptabilidade, sete clones de adaptabilidade específica a ambientes favoráveis ou desfavoráveis e dois clones de ampla adaptabilidade foram identificados interpretando a dispersão no plano do método centroide.

ABSTRACT: The development of Coffea canephora cultivars is based on the characterization of genotype × environment interaction, which is interpreted to quantify the differential behavior of clones at different cultivation sites. The objective of this research was to study the genotype x environment interaction aiming to select clones of broad and specific adaptation to different environments of the Western Amazon. Twelve clones with hybrid characteristics of the botanical varieties Conilon and Robusta and four open pollinated clones, had their performance evaluated in comparison with four controls. The genotype × environment interaction was interpreted based on the environmental quality index, the non-parametric estimator of Lin and Binns, 1988 and on the dispersion of the centroid method. Effects of the genotypes, environment, and genotype × environment interaction were all significant (p<0.01). The environmental quality index (Ij) classified three environments as favorable for coffee production. In terms of the Lin and Binn’s estimator (Pi), hybrid genotypes 16, 10, 13, 09 and 14 presented lower Pi indices than others, and were classified as being more stable. Five clones of low adaptability, seven clones of specific adaptability to favorable or unfavorable environments and two clones of broad adaptability to all environments were identified interpreting the dispersion of the centroid method.

Abstract Amazonian Robustas are ten new clones of high yield potential with characteristics typical of the botanical varieties conilon and robusta. With individual registration, the new cultivars were developed to be grown together with other clones, with flexibility of composition of the crops according to the preference of the producer.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a divergência genética entre matrizes de C. canephora visando desenvolver progênies que associem características das variedades botânicas Conilon e Robusta à expressão do vigor do híbrido. Para isso, foram avaliadas dez características morfológicas e produtivas de 130 clones das variedades botânicas Conilon, Robusta e de híbridos intervarietais, ao longo de dois anos, em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições de quatro plantas por parcela. Para seleção de genitores foi utilizada a técnica de componentes principais associada a pontos referenciais obtidos a partir da média de cada variedade botânica. Os dois primeiros componentes principais permitiram a separação das variedades botânicas e dos híbridos intervarietais com uma representação da variabilidade contida nos dados originais de 76% no primeiro ano e 69% no segundo ano. Apesar da significância da interação genótipos x anos, observou-se pouca diferença no agrupamento ao longo do tempo, o que está associado às maiores estimativas de repetibilidade observadas nesse estudo. Observou-se que as matrizes 16-1-81I, 9-1-82L e 13-1-61I da variedade botânica Robusta e as matrizes 167I, 890E e 130I da variedade botânica Conilon apresentaram maior potencial para a obtenção de ganhos com a seleção.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to quantify the genetic divergence of potential Coffea canephora parents, with the goal of developing progenies that associate the best traits of the Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties for hybrid vigor expression. Thus, 10 morphological and productive characteristics of 130 clones of Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties and their intervarietal hybrids were evaluated over 2 years. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates of four plants per plot. For selection of parents, the main component analysis was used to associate values with reference points obtained from the average of each botanical variety. The first two principal components allowed for the separation of the botanical varieties representing the variability contained in the original data with 76% for the first year and 69% for the second year. Although, the genotype × years interaction had significant effects, there were minor differences in the grouping from one year to the next, which is associated with the higher repeatability estimates observed in this study. It was observed that crosses with the 16-1-81I, 9-1-82L, and 13-1-61I parents of the botanical variety Robusta and the 167I, 890E, and 130I parents of the Conilon botanical variety presented greater potential for obtaining selection gains.

RESUMO A espécie Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner possui ampla distribuição geográfica, com ocorrência em regiões tropicais de diversos continentes. Aproximadamente 30% da produção brasileira de café é proveniente do cultivo dessa espécie, sendo que o Estado de Rondónia se destaca como seu segundo maior produtor. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estimar os parâmetros genéticos com a seleção de clones de C. canephora, da variedade botânica 'Conilon', visando caracterizar a variabilidade genética e estimar o progresso genético da produtividade de café beneficiado. A análise de variância da produção de café beneficiado evidenciou que a fonte de variação "clones" foi significativa nas safras avaliadas, de acordo com o teste F a 1% de significância. A predominância do componente genético na expressão dessa característica, associado a uma boa precisão experimental, indica a possibilidade de obtenção de ganhos com a seleção de plantas. O progresso genético da produção de café beneficiado com o plantio dos clones selecionados foi de 57,85%, que equivale a um aumento na média em quatro anos de 44,75 sacas ha-1, para 70,64 sacas ha-1. Além do incremento na produtividade de grãos, os clones de ciclo intermediário selecionados favorecem a concentração da colheita e a redução dos custos operacionais.

ABSTRACT The species Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner is geographically widely distributed, occurring in the tropical regions of several continents. Cultivation of the species accounts for approximately 30% of coffee production in Brazil, with the state of Rondonia being the second largest producer. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters in the selection of clones of the 'Conilon' variety of C. canephora, seeking to characterise genetic variability and estimate genetic gain in the productivity of processed coffee. Analysis of variance of the production of processed coffee demonstrated that, according to F-test at a level of 1%, the source of variation, clones, was significant in the crops being evaluated. A predominance of the genetic component in the expression of this characteristic, together with good experimental precision, indicates the possibility of obtaining gains from plant selection. Genetic gain in the production of processed coffee from the planting of selected clones was 57.85%, which is equal to an average increase over four years of from 44.75 bags ha-1 to 70.64 bags ha-1. Aside from the increase in grain productivity, selecting clones with an intermediate cycle contributes to concentrating the harvest and reducing operating costs.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a capacidade discriminatória de métodos para seleção e recomendação de clones de cafeeiros da espécie Coffea canephora, considerando a interação genótipos x anos na distribuição da produtividade de café beneficiado, nos períodos de 2000 a 2004 e de 2007 a 2011. O efeito significativo da interação genótipos x anos indicou que existem clones que apresentaram desempenho não consistente ao longo do tempo. Os métodos de LIN & BINNS (1988) e ANNICCHIARICO (1992) apresentaram resultados similares, de modo que um deles pode ser utilizado em substituição ao outro. O método de EBERHART & RUSSEL (1966) identificou parte dos clones de adaptação específica, enquanto que os métodos, MHPRVG e centroide permitiram caracterizar os clones de maior adaptabilidade e estabilidade, apresentando resultados complementares. A seleção de plantas baseada na distribuição da produtividade de café beneficiado ao longo do tempo permitiu selecionar clones de desempenho superior sem acentuar a bienalidade.

This research aimed to compare methods of selecting Coffea canephoraclones, considering the genotypes x years interaction, based on data of processed coffee yield obtained from 2000 to 2004 and 2007 to 2011. The significant clones x seasons (CS) interaction, indicates that the genotypes showed no consistent performance over the years. The LIN & BINNS (1988) and ANNICCHIARICO (1992) methods showed similar results indicating that one method may be used to replace the other. The EBERHART & RUSSEL (1966) identified some of the specific adaptability clones. The MHPRVG and centroid methods allowed to select clones of higher adaptability and stability. The plant selection based on the distribution of coffee productivity over time allowed the selection of superior clones without accentuate biannuality.

Devido às temperaturas elevadas, basicamente, todas as lavouras de café no estado de Rondônia são da espécie C. canephora. Desse modo, a importação de café arábica de outros estados faz-se necessária para a composição dos blends, além do mercado de cafés especiais ou gourmets. O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar genótipos de café arábica que apresentam desempenho agronômico satisfatório sob condições de temperaturas elevadas. O experimento foi instalado em Ouro Preto do Oeste-RO, com temperaturas médias anuais de 25,8°C e precipitação pluvial média de 2.300mm ano-1. O experimento foi composto por 114 genótipos de café arábica, sendo 103 progênies e onze cultivares testemunhas, fornecidas pela EPAMIG. O delineamento foi blocos casualizados com três repetições, espaçamento de 3,0 x 1,0 metros, com cinco plantas por parcela. Todas as safras demonstraram diferença significativa para a característica produtividade de café beneficiado. Na análise conjunta, foram detectadas diferenças significativas entre progênies e entre cultivares testemunhas. Na média das quatro colheitas, a produtividade de café beneficiado foi de 32,38 sacas ha-1. Destaques para as cultivares 'Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' e 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' que alcançaram produtividades acima de 40 sacas ha-1. O ganho de seleção obtido foi de 14,33 sacas ha-1, que equivale a um aumento de 44,04% na produção de café beneficiado. Destaque para a progênie H514-7-10-6-2-3-9, com produtividade média de 51,20 sacas ha-1. Quanto ao ciclo de maturação, 56% das progênies foram classificadas como ciclo precoce e 44% de ciclo intermediário. Não foi observado genótipo de ciclo tardio

Due to high temperatures, practically all coffee farms in the state of Rondonia are of the C. canephora species. Thus, importing arabica coffee from other states becomes necessary for composition of blends, as well as for the specialty or gourmet coffee market. The purpose of this study was to select arabica coffee genotypes that exhibit satisfactory agronomic performance under high temperature conditions. The experiment was conducted in OuroPreto do Oeste, RO, Brazil, with mean annual temperature of 25.8°C and mean annual rainfall of 2300mm year-1. The experiment was composed of 114 arabica coffee genotypes, with 103 progenies and eleven control cultivars, provided by EPAMIG. A randomized block experimental design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0x1.0 meters and five plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed significant difference for the green coffee yield trait. In joint analysis, significant differences were detected among progenies and control cultivars. In the average of the four harvests, green coffee yield was 32.38 bags ha-1. The cultivars 'CatuaíVermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' and 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' stood out, achieving yields greater than 40 bags ha-1. The gain obtained from selection was 14.33 bags ha-1, which is equivalent to an increase of 44.04% in production of green coffee. The progeny H514-7-10-6-2-3-9 stood out with an average yield of 51.20 bags ha-1. In regard to maturation cycle, 56% of the progenies were classified as early maturity and 44% as medium maturity. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade da seleção precoce em café arábica, por meio do emprego de correlações entre caracteres morfológicos e de produção de grãos. Foram avaliados 269 acessos de Coffea arabica, entre cultivares, híbridos e genótipos selvagens, oriundos do banco de germoplasma de café da Epamig, em Patrocínio, MG. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições, no espaçamento 3,5x0,8 m, com parcelas de dez plantas. Os caracteres morfológicos foram avaliados em 2006, 12 meses após a implantação da cultura, com as plantas ainda na fase juvenil. Os dados de produção de grãos foram referentes às safras de 2008/2009 e 2009/2010. O comprimento do primeiro ramo plagiotrópico, aos 12 meses de idade, apresentou alta correlação e alto efeito direto, em sentido favorável à produção de grãos, tendo sido o principal caráter morfológico responsável pela variação na produção de grãos. O vigor vegetativo, aos 12 meses de idade, foi a variável secundária de maior importância para explicar variações na produção de grãos. Esses caracteres podem ser utilizados efetivamente na seleção precoce para produção de grãos em café arábica.

The objective of this work was to assess the viability of early selection in Arabica coffee using the correlation between morphological traits and grain yield. Two hundred and sixty‑nine accessions of Coffea arabica, among cultivars, hybrids, and wild genotypes, from Epamig's coffee germplasm bank, Patrocínio, MG, Brazil, were evaluated. A randomized complete block design was used, with two replicates, at a spacing of 3.5x0.8 m, with ten plants per plot. Morphological traits were evaluated in 2006, 12 months after planting, when plants were still at the juvenile phase. Grain yield data are from the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 crop seasons. The length of the first plagiotropic stem, at 12 months of age, was highly correlated and showed a high direct effect in a favorable direction toward grain yield, being the main morphological trait responsible for variations in grain yield. The vegetative vigor at 12 months of age was the most important secondary variable in explaining the variations in grain yield. These traits can be used effectively in the early selection for grain yield in Arabica coffee.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros genéticos de características de qualidade de grãos de pinhão-manso (Jatropha curcas) e quantificar o progresso genético da seleção. O teor de óleo dos grãos e os pesos de grãos, amêndoas e casca de 120 plantas, selecionadas ao acaso em plantio comercial, foram avaliados aos 36 e 48 meses de cultivo. O progresso genético foi quantificado por meio da avaliação dos ganhos diretos e da utilização de índices de seleção. O efeito da interação genótipos x medição foi significativo para todas as características avaliadas; portanto, há genótipos com comportamento diferenciado nas duas colheitas. Os parâmetros genéticos indicaram predominância da variação genotípica na expressão das características avaliadas, e observou-se tendência de manutenção da superioridade dos genótipos ao longo do tempo. O índice de seleção genótipo-ideótipo resultou em maior ganho total e promoveu alteração mais equilibrada na média das características. A seleção direta para peso de amêndoa resulta em ganhos totais semelhantes aos obtidos com a utilização dos índices de seleção.

The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters of physic nut (Jatropha curcas) grain quality traits and to quantify the genetic progress with selection. Seed oil content, and seed, kernel, and shell weights of 120 plants, randomly selected in a commercial planting, were evaluated at 36 and 48 months. Genetic progress was quantified by the evaluation of direct gains and by the use of selection indexes. The genotype x measurement interaction was significant for all evaluated traits; therefore, there are genotypes with different behavior in the two cropping seasons. The genetic parameters indicated a higher proportion of genotypic variation in the expression of the evaluated traits, and a trend of the genotypes to maintain their genetic superiority over time was observed. The genotype-ideotype selection index resulted in higher genetic gains and promoted a more balanced alteration in the trait means. The direct selection for kernel weight results in genetic gains similar to those obtained with the use of the selection indexes.
