ABSTRACT Hepatic injuries in COVID-19 are not yet fully understood and indirect pathways (without viral replication in the liver) have been associated with the activation of vascular mechanisms of liver injury in humans infected with SARS-CoV-2. Golden Syrian hamsters are an effective model for experimental reproduction of moderate and self-limiting lung disease during SARS-CoV-2 infection. As observed in humans, this experimental model reproduces lesions of bronchointerstitial pneumonia and pulmonary vascular lesions, including endotheliitis (attachment of lymphoid cells to the luminal surface of endothelium). Extrapulmonary vascular lesions are well documented in COVID-19, but such extrapulmonary vascular lesions have not yet been described in the Golden Syrian hamster model of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study aimed to evaluate microscopic liver lesions in Golden Syrian hamsters experimentally infected with SARS-CoV-2. In total, 38 conventional Golden Syrian hamsters, divided into infected group (n=24) and mock-infected group (n=14), were euthanized at 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 7-, 14-, and 15-days post infection with SARS-CoV-2. Liver fragments were evaluated by histopathology and immunohistochemical detection of SARS-CoV-2 Spike S2 antigens. The frequencies of portal vein endotheliitis, lobular activity, hepatocellular degeneration, and lobular vascular changes were higher among SARS-CoV-2-infected animals. Spike S2 antigen was not detected in liver. The main results indicate that SARS-CoV-2 infection exacerbated vascular and inflammatory lesions in the liver of hamsters with pre-existing hepatitis of unknown origin. A potential application of this animal model in studies of the pathogenesis and evolution of liver lesions associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection still needs further evaluation. Our work presents a comparative study of morphological characteristics and the osteogenic potential of MC3T3-E1 cells on different modified surfaces of titanium: nanostructured TiO2 with 20 and 100 nm nanotube diameter, and sandblasting and acid etching, commercially known as SLA. Nanostructured TiO2surface was prepared by anodizing of titanium plates, while SLA surface was provided by commercial supplier. Surfaces were characterized by SEM, EDS, AFM, and water contact angle measurements. In order to evaluate cell response,in vitrotests of MTT, alkaline phosphatase and staining with alizarin red were performed. From the results ofin vitro tests, 100 nm nanotubular surface showed lower levels of cell mineralization, differentiation and adhesion. In general, 20 nm TiO2nanotubular and SLA surfaces promoted similar response from osteoblasts. As a result, 20 nm nanotubular surface proved to be a possible alternative to SLA surface with potential for use in oral implantology market.

RESUMO A educação médica tem mudado bastante nos últimos anos, principalmente pelo surgimento de novos conceitos relacionados aos processos de ensino-aprendizagem que preconizam o emprego de métodos ativos, tais como a Aprendizagem Baseada em Equipes (ABE), do inglês Team-Based Learning (TBL). A monitoria é uma estratégia bem estabelecida para atividades de ensino que tem sido utilizada em vários cursos de graduação. Esse artigo descreve o teste piloto de um novo modelo de monitoria desenvolvido por meio da adaptação do ABE, então denominado método “PAL-TBL”. O método foi aplicado durante as aulas de Fisiologia Humana com os estudantes do primeiro ano do curso de Medicina da Universidade de Pernambuco – campus Garanhuns, Brasil. O método PAL-TBL foi delineado como uma modalidade de ensino-aprendizagem para contribuir para a formação acadêmica dos estudantes de Medicina. Nesse sentido, a dinâmica organizacional e o desenvolvimento das atividades deram-se durante os anos de 2016 e 2017. A metodologia utilizada foi a seguinte: (i) momento I ou de preparação de material (contexto/cenário) e estudo/análise desse material pelos participantes; (ii) momento II de verificação do conhecimento prévio (teste individual e em equipe), levantamento de dúvidas e feedback e (iii) momento III de aplicação dos conceitos. Vale ressaltar que o momento II contou com momento avaliativo do trabalho das equipes e do material preparado. A produção do material, contexto, questões e devolutiva, foi realizada por meio da interação entre os estudantes monitores e o professor, com o intuito de inserir as experiências vividas previamente, bem como elucidar a importância do uso de métodos ativos durante a formação acadêmica para o desenvolvimento de competências úteis para a prática médica. O desenvolvimento da metodologia proposta levou os estudantes a refletirem mais sobre os problemas apresentados durante as discussões em sala de aula, permitindo uma rica experiência de aprendizagem. Aplicações futuras do PAL-TBL com estudantes de anos mais avançados do curso serão realizadas para ampliar os benefícios da estratégia desenvolvida para a formação médica.

ABSTRACT Medical education has been significantly changing in the last years, mainly due to new conceptions of the teaching-learning processes that advocate the employment of active methods of learning, such as Team-Based Learning (TBL). Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) is a long-established strategy that has been used in several undergraduate courses. This study describes a pilot test of a new model of PAL developed with an adapted TBL strategy, that was called “PAL-TBL method”. The test occurred during Human Physiology classes with first-year Medical undergraduate students from Universidade de Pernambuco - Garanhuns Campus, Brazil. The PAL-TBL was designed as a teaching-learning methodology to improve academic education. Here, the organizational dynamics and the design of the activities carried out from 2016 to 2017 are reported. The resulting PAL-TBL methodology is characterized as the following: (i) timing I or material preparation (context/scenario) and study/analysis of the material by the participants; (ii) timing II or verification of prior knowledge (individual and team test), questioning and feedback and (iii) timing III or applying the concepts learned. It is worth mentioning that the end of timing II consisted of a moment for evaluating the team’s work and the materials used. Material production happened through the interaction between student-tutors and the (supervising) professor, aiming to share experiences as well as to elucidate the importance of using active methods during the academic development of useful competencies for medical practice. The methodology developed allowed students to reflect extensively on the problems presented in the class discussions, allowing for a richer learning experience. Further applications of PAL-TBL in advanced years of the course will be done to confirm the benefits of this hybrid strategy for medical education.

Este texto se dedica a apresentar uma discussão acerca das mudanças de concepção dos anteprojetos da Enciclopédia Brasileira do Instituto Nacional do Livro durante a década de 1950. Para tanto, realizo uma comparação entre os dois mais importantes anteprojetos da obra - as versões de 1937 e a de 1957. Apresento aqui também a análise e as discussões em torno da concepção de modernização que circularam na década de 1950, que se distanciaram das antigas percepções a respeito do significado de “nacional”. O que antes era compreendido como o destaque dado aos particularismos nacionais, tal como aconteceu nos anos de 1930, a partir dos anos 50 passou a tratar da exteriorização do Brasil através da produção de uma obra de caráter universalista e que contemplava os currículos universitários.

Ce texte se consacre à présenter un débat à propos des changements de conception des avant-projets de l'Encyclopédie Brésilienne de l'Instituto Nacional do Livro [Institut National du Livre] durant la décennie 1950. Pour ce faire, nous établissons une comparaison entre les deux avant-projets les plus importants de l'œuvre - les versions de 1937 et celle de 1957. De plus, dans ce texte, nous présentons aussi l'analyse et les débats à propos de la conception de modernisation qui circulèrent durant la décennie 1950 et qui se différencièrent des anciennes perceptions quant à la signification de “national”. Ce qui était entendu auparavant comme la mise en relief donnée aux particularismes nationaux, comme c'était le cas dans les années 1930, se convertit, à partir des années 1950, à l'extériorisation du Brésil par le truchement d'une œuvre au caractère universaliste et qui tenait compte des curricula universitaires.

This article discusses conceptual changes in the provisional plans for the Instituto Nacional do Livro Enciclopédia Brasileira in the 1950s. It compares the two most important preliminary plans - the 1937 and 1957 versions - and presents the analysis and debates surrounding the concept of modernization current in the 1950s, which distanced themselves from earlier perceptions of the meaning of “national”. What had been previously understood, in the 1930s, as an emphasis on specific national features began, in the 1950s, to address the exteriorization of Brazil through the production of a universalist work which had implications for university curricula.

Overview and aims: The incidence of adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) of the cervix is increasing, particularly in reproductive-age. Conservative treatment with cervical conization is an alternative to hysterectomy. However, concern persists regarding the risk of residual and recurrence of AIS. The purpose of this study was to determine the residual disease and outcome of patients treated for AIS. Study design: Retrospective and descriptive analysis. Population and methods: The medical records of 10 women with cervical AIS followed at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil do Porto between 1999 and 2012 were reviewed. Demographic characteristics, treatment, pathologic findings and outcomes were analyzed. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 41.1 years (range 31-63). All patients had conization performed as the initial treatment. Negative margins after conization were noted in 30% (3/10) and one (1/3) of these had residual disease in the surgical specimen following hysterectomy. In those with positive margins, 43% (3/7) had no residual disease in the surgical specimen after histerectomy. Considering conservative treatment (2/10), a second conization was performed in one patient and showed no residual disease and the other one had no subsequent treatment. None of the patients with conservative or definitive treatment had developed recurrence or invasive disease at 33 months (range 12 to 60) of follow-up. Conclusion: Our study reinforced the evidence that conservative treatment can be performed in patients with clear margins after conization given the low persistence of disease found in surgical specimen after hysterectomy. In global, these patients had favorable outcomes without recurrence or invasive disease.

A isotretinoína apresenta restrições relacionadas a efeitos no perfil lipídico. Revisaram-se 90 pacientes tratados, em busca de fatores predisponentes a essas alterações. Houve elevação significativa do colesterol e triglicerídeos. Os pacientes em que estes últimos mostraram essa alteração foram, em sua maioria, do sexo feminino, predileção que não ocorria com as alterações iniciais. Mulheres com acne persistente talvez representem população de risco para tais efeitos colaterais

There are restrictions associated with the use of isotretinoin because of its effects on the lipid profile. The records of ninety patients treated with this medication were reviewed to identify factors that would predispose patients to these abnormalities. A significant increase in cholesterol and triglyceride levels occurred. Patients in whom triglyceride levels increased were more likely to be female, although this difference was not present at baseline. Women with persistent acne may constitute a risk population for these side effects
