Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a general applicability equation to represent the hypsometric relationship of Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden et Cambage stands in Irani, Santa Catarina. The data came from a continuous forest inventory, with a simple random sampling design and the Bitterlich method. The functions to represent the hypsometric relationship were adjusted with their parameters linear function of stands variables, based on the Gauss-Newton algorithm. The models were evaluated according to the criteria of adjustment and precision, accuracy and validation. In general, the Harrison model, adjusted with the coefficient “c” linear function of age, dominant diameter and basal area, presented the best statistical performance to represent the hypsometric relationship of Eucalyptus benthamii.

ABSTRACT To quantify the surviving trees in a forest stand and estimate the probability of an individual tree to survival are a fundamental task in forest management planning. Therefore, the main goal of this paper was to estimate the tree survival probability in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations based on generalized linear models (GLM). The data set was obtained from forest inventories carried out in the Midwest of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The data analysis combined strategies for selecting covariates and different specifications of link functions in a Bernoulli GLM. We performed strategies for covariate selection at plot-level along with the standard stepwise procedure, where we considered the elastic net approach, as well as its special cases the lasso and ridge penalization. Our analyses showed that the stepwise procedure combined with the complementary log-log link function provide the best fit. The variables that most contributed to assess tree survival were basal area, number of individuals, maximum diameter, diameter of the average cross-sectional area and the diameter coefficient of variation per plots. This model presents 81.5% of accuracy given by ROC curve. Finally, we evaluated the fitted model by means of the half-Normal plots and randomized quantile residuals, whose results showed evidence of a suitable fit. We suggest the stepwise procedure for selecting covariates for a tree survival probability model, besides a complementary log-log link function.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver uma equação com atributos biológicos e aplicabilidade geral, para representar a relação hipsométrica de povoamentos de Pinus taeda L., com e sem desbaste, na região Meio Oeste do estado de Santa Catarina. Os dados são provenientes de 652 parcelas permanentes, de 428 a 740 m2, localizadas em povoamentos florestais com idades variando de 4,6 a 35,2 anos, em que foram medidas as alturas totais de cerca de 20% das árvores, além das árvores dominantes. As funções de Harrison, Michailoff, Prodan e Stoffels e Van Soest foram ajustadas com seus parâmetros função linear de variáveis do povoamento, baseado no algoritmo Gauss-Newton. De maneira geral, o modelo de Harrison, ajustado com o coeficiente função linear da idade (t), índice de sítio (S), coeficiente de variação dos diâmetros das árvores da parcela (CV d ) e área basal da parcela (G), mostrou o melhor desempenho estatístico para representar a relação hipsométrica, consistência biológica e aplicabilidade geral para povoamentos de Pinus taeda.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to develop an equation with biological attributes and general applicability, to represent the height-diameter relationship for Pinus taeda L. stands, with and without thinning, in the Middle West region of Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The data came from 652 permanent plots, with 428 to 740 m2, located in forest stands with ages ranging from 4.6 to 35.2 years, in which the total heights of about 20% of the trees were measured, in addition to the dominant trees. The functions developed by Harrison, Michailoff, Prodan and Stoffels & Van Soest were fitted with their parameters linear function of stand variables, based on the Gauss-Newton algorithm. In general, the Harrison model, fitted with the parameter linear function of age (t), site index (S), coefficient of variation of the tree diameters in the plot (CV d ) and basal area of the plot (G), showed the best statistical performance to represent the height-diameter relationship, biological consistency and general applicability for stands of Pinus taeda.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar o efeito da pecuária extensiva sobre a composição e a diversidade florística da regeneração natural em áreas de preservação permanente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Caçador, SC. Os dados são provenientes de 32 parcelas de área fixa temporária (4 × 17 m), distribuídas de maneira aleatória, em áreas de preservação permanente. Foi mensurado o diâmetro do colo (10 cm) e a altura total de todos os indivíduos que apresentaram altura superior a 30 cm e circunferência à altura do peito igual ou menor que 15,7 cm (diâmetro ≤ 5 cm). Na análise florística foram encontradas 61 espécies, 52 gêneros e 30 famílias botânicas. As áreas sem a presença de gado apresentaram uma diversidade ligeiramente superior às áreas com gado. De modo geral, a composição, diversidade e a equabilidade florística entre as áreas com e sem gado foram semelhantes.

The objective of this research was to analyze the effect of extensive cattle raising on floristic composition and diversity of natural regeneration in permanent preservation areas of Ombrophilous Mixed Forest in the municipality of Caçador, Santa Catarina state, Brazil. Data were collected in 32 temporary fixed area plots (4×17 m) distributed randomly in permanent preservation areas. We measured the collar diameter (10 cm) and total height of all individuals taller than 30 cm, with circumference at breast height smaller than or equal to 15.7 cm (diameter ≤ 5 cm). The floristic analysis showed 61 species, 52 genera and 30 botanical families. The areas without cattle presented diversity slightly higher than the areas with cattle. In general, the floristic composition, diversity and equability between areas with and without cattle were similar.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se ajustar e testar diversos modelos estatísticos para estimativa do conteúdo de macronutrientes da biomassa aérea de bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella Bentham). Os dados desta pesquisa provieram de 25 árvores de bracatingais nativos da porção norte da região metropolitana de Curitiba, no estado do Paraná. As árvores foram separadas nos compartimentos folhas, galhos < 4 cm, galhos > 4 cm, madeira e casca do fuste, para a determinação da biomassa e macronutrientes. Diversos modelos estatísticos foram ajustados, visando a estimar os conteúdos de N, P, K, Ca e Mg para os diferentes compartimentos da árvore, utilizando variáveis dendrométricas como variáveis independentes dos modelos. Conforme os resultados encontrados, é possível afirmar que as equações desenvolvidas para a estimativa do conteúdo de macronutrientes foram, de maneira geral, satisfatórias. As equações estimam melhor os macronutrientes para os compartimentos da biomassa do fuste e para os compartimentos da biomassa somados. Em alguns casos, foram observadas melhoras no desempenho das equações quando dimensões da copa, do fuste, idade e altura dominante foram inseridas como variáveis independentes.

The aim of this work was to adjust and test different statistical models for estimating macronutrient content in the above-ground biomass of bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella Bentham). The data were collected from 25 bracatinga trees, all native to the north of the metropolitan region of Curitiba, Paraná state, Brazil. To determine the biomass and macronutrient content, the trees were separated into the compartments leaves, branches < 4 cm, branches > 4 cm, wood and stem barks. Different statistical models were adjusted to estimate N, P, K, Ca and Mg contents in the tree compartments, using dendrometric variables as the model independent variables. Based on the results, the equations developed for estimating macronutrient contents were, in general, satisfactory. The most accurate estimates were obtained for the stem biomass compartments and the sum of the biomass compartments. In some cases, the equations had a better performance when crown and stem dimensions, age and dominant height were included as independent variables.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo testar funções densidade de probabilidade para a distribuição das variáveis altura total, área transversal e volume individual, para três diferentes intervalos de classe. Os dados provieram da medição dos diâmetros (DAP), alturas totais e estimativas dos volumes individuais de 338 pinheiros de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista, com 15,24 ha, situado no Campus Jardim Botânico da UFPR, Curitiba-PR. Foram ajustadas dez funções, incluindo modelos comumente utilizados na distribuição diamétrica e outros desenvolvidos recentemente e aplicadas na ciência florestal. Os critérios de seleção foram o teste de aderência de Kolmogorov - Smirnov, erro padrão da estimativa em porcentagem e o coeficiente de determinação ajustado. Foram usados três intervalos de classe determinados pelas regras de Sturges, Dixon & Kronmal e Velleman. A função Normal, para a variável altura, e Weber, para a distribuição da área transversal e volume individual, propiciaram os melhores ajustes, considerando os três intervalos de classe adotados. Os modelos se ajustaram melhor para intervalos de classe de maior tamanho, obtidos pela regra de Sturges.

This study aimed to test probability density functions for the distribution of variables total height, transverse area and individual volume, considering three different class intervals. Data were obtained from the measurement of diameter (DBH) and total height and from estimation of the individual volume of 338 pine trees in a fragment of Mixed Ombrophylous Forest with an area of 15.24 ha, which is located in Jardim Botânico campus of UFPR, Curitiba-PR. Ten functions were fitted, including commonly used models for diameter distribution as well as other recently developed models applied to forest science. Selection criteria included Kolmogorov-Smirnov adherence test, standard error of estimate in percentage and adjusted coefficient of determination. Three class intervals were used as obtained by Sturges, Dixon & Kronmal, and Velleman criteria. The Normal function for variable height, and the Weber function for distribution of transverse area and individual volume, provided the best fit, considering the three class intervals adopted. The models fitted better for larger size class intervals as obtained by Sturges rule.

Os objetivos deste estudo foram ajustar e selecionar funções de densidade probabilística que caracterizem a estrutura diamétrica desse fragmento e das espécies: Cedrela fissilis (Cedro), Luehea divaricata (Açoita Cavalo), Gochnatia polymorpha (Cambará), Sebastiania commersoniana (Branquilho) e Casearia sylvestris (Cafezeiro) de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista com 15,24ha, localizado em Curitiba, Paraná. Para avaliar a distribuição diamétrica dessa floresta e das cinco espécies selecionadas, foram ajustadas sete funções probabilísticas para intervalos de classe de 5cm. Segundo os critérios de seleção adotados, o modelo que melhor representou a distribuição diamétrica para toda a floresta, o cedro, o cambará e o branquilho foi o de Weber; para o cafezeiro, a função Gamma (Adaptada) foi a mais eficiente e para o açoita cavalo nenhuma dessas funções foi aderente. O branquilho, o açoita cavalo, o cafezeiro e a floresta como um todo apresentaram distribuição em "J" invertido ou decrescente. Entretanto, o cedro e o cambará apresentaram distribuição tendendo à unimodalidade com forte assimetria à direita.

The objective of this study was to adjust and select probability density functions that characterize the diametric structure of this forest fragment and for the species: Cedrela fissilis, Luehea divaricata, Gochnatia polymorpha, Sebastiania commersoniana and Casearia sylvestris for a 15.24 hectare fragment of Mixed Ombrophylous Forest, located in Curitiba, State of Paraná. In order to evaluate the diametric distributions of this forest and the five selected species, seven probability functions were adjusted for 5cm class intervals. According to the criteria of selection adopted, the model that best represented the diametric distributions for the whole forest, Cedrela fissilis, Gochnatia polymorpha and Sebastiania commersoniana was the Weber model; for Casearia sylvestris, the Gamma function (adapted) was the most efficient, and for Luehea divaricata, none of these functions showed adherence. The Sebastiania commersoniana, Luehea divaricata, Casearia sylvestris and the forest as a whole showed inverted "J" or decreasing distribution, while, Cedrela fissilis and Gochnatia polymorpha showed an almost unimodal distribution with a strong asymmetry to the right.
