RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar o potencial de perda de solo por meio da equação universal de perda de solo e identificar os fatores que controlam o processo erosivo em uma bacia hidrográfica de encosta. O fator erosividade da chuva (R) foi calculado por meio de dados normais de precipitação, obtendo-se, assim, índices mensais de erosão. O fator erodibilidade do solo (K) foi obtido a partir de uma amostragem de solo realizada por meio de uma malha de 340 pontos, na qual os valores foram interpolados pelo método da krigagem ordinária. O fator topográfico (LS) foi gerado a partir do Modelo Digital de Elevação (MDE), já os fatores uso e manejo e práticas conservacionistas (CP) foram obtidos por meio de observações de campo e valores tabelados. As maiores taxas de perdas abrangem 27% da área e se concentram em locais de maiores declividades nos quais predominam solos rasos, como Neossolos Litólicos e Neossolos Regolíticos. O fator LS determinou a magnitude do processo erosivo e o fator CP apresentou a maior relação com o controle das perdas de solo. Os resultados encontrados mostram a importância do fator cobertura do solo, em que medidas de manutenção da vegetação e práticas conservacionistas devem ser adotadas e consideradas pelos gestores ambientais em regiões de encosta com predomínio de solos rasos associados a relevo declivoso.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to estimate the soil loss potential through the universal soil loss equation and to identify the factors that control the erosive process in a hillside watershed. Rainfall erosivity factor (R) was calculated through normal precipitation data, thus obtaining monthly erosion indexes. The soil erodibility factor (K) was obtained from a soil sampling in an irregular grid of 340 points, in which the values were interpolated by the ordinary kriging method. The topographic factor (LS) was generated from the Digital Elevation Model (MDE) and the use and management and conservationist practices factors (CP) through field observations and tabulated values. The highest loss rates cover around 27% of the area, and are concentrated in places with higher slopes where shallow soils such as Litolics Neosols and Regolithic Neosols predominate. The LS factor determined the magnitude of the erosive process and the CP factor showed the highest relation with the soil loss control. The results found show the importance of the cover-management factor, in which measures of vegetation maintenance and conservation practices should be adopted and considered by the environmental managers in hillside regions with predominance of shallow soils associated to slope relief.

Resumo O monitoramento da qualidade da água consiste num dos principais instrumentos para gestão de recursos hídricos. O presente trabalho teve como objetivos: (i) avaliar a qualidade da água na bacia de contribuição da estação de tratamento de água de Sinnott bem como a relação entre os parâmetros fisioquímicos da água; e (ii) analisar a variação sazonal dos parâmetros de qualidade da água em função das chuvas. A área de estudo abrangeu a bacia de contribuição da estação de tratamento de água de Sinnott, formada principalmente pelas áreas de drenagem do córrego Pelotas e seu afluente, o córrego Quilombo, localizado na cidade de Pelotas. Um conjunto de 118.368 pontos de dados foi analisado entre 2007 e 2012. Os seguintes parâmetros de qualidade da água foram avaliados foram: turbidez, temperatura, cor, pH, dureza, oxigênio dissolvido, matéria orgânica e alcalinidade. Os resultados mostraram que os valores de oxigênio dissolvido e pH da água estavam de acordo com a legislação brasileira nos 6 anos avaliados. Entretanto, a cor da água foi o parâmetro que permaneceu o maior número de dias acima dos limites estabelecidos, ocorrendo principalmente no córrego Pelotas. Esse resultado indica a necessidade de ações de conservação na bacia hidrográfica, principalmente considerando a importância da cor na avaliação da qualidade da água para abastecimento público, tanto em termos de custos de tratamento quanto de saúde pública. Os maiores valores de cor da água, turbidez e matéria orgânica coincidiram com a ocorrência dos maiores valores de precipitação. As atividades agrícolas podem potencializar a sedimentação na bacia de contribuição da estação de tratamento de água de Sinnott.

Abstract Water-quality monitoring is one of the main instruments for water-resource management. This work therefore evaluated the water quality of the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant as well as the relationship between physicochemical water parameters, and analyzed the seasonal variation of water quality parameters as a function of rainfall. The study area encompassed the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant, formed mainly by the drainage areas of the Pelotas stream and its tributary, the Quilombo Stream, located in the city of Pelotas - Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A set of 118,368 data points for each stream was analyzed between 2007 and 2012. The following water quality parameters were evaluated: turbidity, temperature, color, pH, hardness, dissolved oxygen, organic matter, and alkalinity. Results showed that dissolved oxygen and water pH values conformed with Brazilian legislation in the 6 years evaluated. However, water color was the parameter that remained the greatest number of days above the set limits, mainly in the Pelotas Stream. Result indicates the need for conservation actions in the catchment, especially considering the importance of color for the assessment of water quality for public supply, in terms of both treatment costs and of public health. Highest values for water color, turbidity, and organic matter coincided with the occurrence of the highest rainfall values. Agricultural activities may potentiate sedimentation in the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a condição física e a potencialidade de uso agrícola de um solo construído após mineração com carvão, além do desenvolvimento radicular de gramíneas tropicais nesse solo, tendo-se considerado diferentes períodos de revegetação. O solo foi construído no início de 2003, e o experimento instalado em novembro/dezembro de 2007. A condição física do solo construído foi avaliada nas parcelas ocupadas por gramíneas perenes, como Urochloa humidicola, Panicum maximum e U. brizantha. Em julho de 2012, foram coletadas amostras de solo com estrutura preservada e não preservada para a determinação dos atributos físico-químicos, nas camadas de 0,00-0,10, 0,10-0,20 e 0,20-0,30 m. Monólitos de solo foram coletados para caracterização do sistema radicular das diferentes gramíneas. Após 58 meses de revegetação, a condição física do solo construído ainda é inadequada ao uso agrícola que envolva práticas mais intensivas de manejo de solo. Entre as camadas avaliadas, somente a de 0,00-0,10 m fornece condições para que o solo cumpra suas funções no ecossistema. Urochloa brizantha mostra-se mais promissora para a recuperação da estrutura do solo na camada de 0,00-0,10 m, e a densidade radicular foi o atributo mais sensível para a diferenciação do desenvolvimento potencial das diferentes espécies nesta camada.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the root development of the physical condition and the potential of agricultural use of a constructed minesoil after coal mining, besides the root development of tropical grasses in this soil, considering different revegetation periods. The soil was constructed in early 2003, and the experiment was installed in November/December 2007. Soil physical condition was evaluated in plots vegetated with perennial grasses such as Urochloa humidicola, Panicum maximum, and U. brizantha. In July 2012, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were taken for determining physical and chemical attributes in the 0.00-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30-m soil layers. Soil monoliths were collected for characterizing the root system. After 58 months of revegetation, the physical condition of the constructed minesoil is still inadequate to an agricultural use that requires intensive soil management. Among the evaluated layers, only the 0.00-0.10-m layer provides conditions for the soil to function properly in the ecosystem. Urochloa brizantha was more promising for the recovery of soil structure in the 0.00-0.10-m soil layer, and root density was the most sensitive attribute to distinguish the potential development of the different species in this layer.

ABSTRACT: Studies addressing the potential of grass roots in improving the structural quality of constructed minesoils are not frequent in the literature, although they are essential for understanding the re-establishment of soil functions in the environment. The objective of this study was to quantify the root attributes of the species Urochloa humidicola, Panicum maximum, and Urochloa brizantha and relate them to the physical properties of a constructed minesoil in reclamation of an area degraded by coal mining. The study was performed in a field experiment in a coal mining area located in southern Brazil. Soil samples were collected, five years after experiment installation, to determine bulk density, macroporosity, distribution of water stable aggregates expressed in different size classes, mean weight diameter of water stable aggregates, and organic carbon content, as well as for chemical characterization. Root sampling was performed by the monolith method to a depth of 0.30 m. Results confirm the hypothesis that the root system of the perennial grasses studied positively contributes to recovery of the constructed minesoil in the 0.00-0.10 m layer after 58 months of revegetation. The higher percentage of large aggregates, higher bulk density, and lower macroporosity in the subsurface indicate the presence of degraded layers, negatively influencing the development of the grass root system. Urochloa brizantha exhibited the largest root matter in the surface layer, influencing the breakdown of the large and cohesive aggregates, transforming them into smaller crumbly aggregates. In the 0.10-0.20 m layer, Urochloa humidicola showed greater volume and root length in relation to other species; nevertheless, changes in soil physical properties were not observed, showing that the time span of the root growth of the species was not sufficient to provide improvements in the subsurface layers.

Na mineração de carvão a céu aberto, a superfície é completamente suprimida de vegetação e as camadas de solo e rochas que recobrem os bancos de carvão são removidas, causando drásticas alterações no perfil do solo original. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência de diferentes espécies de poáceas na recuperação da estrutura de um solo construído, como parte da estratégia de recuperação de áreas degradadas por mineração de carvão. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: T1 - Hemarthria altissima, T2 - Paspalum notatum, T3 - Cynodon dactilon, T4 - Urochloa brizantha. Como testemunha, utilizou-se o solo construído sem cobertura vegetal, denominada T5. Foram coletadas amostras de solo não preservadas e preservadas nas camadas de 0,00-0,10m e 0,10-0,20m, para as determinações da porcentagem de macroagregados e microagregados, diâmetro médio ponderado, carbono orgânico, densidade e macroporosidade do solo construído. Os resultados obtidos foram analisados aos 05, 41 e 78 meses após o estabelecimento do experimento. Aos 78 meses de condução do experimento, observa-se ação positiva das quatro espécies vegetais na recuperação da agregação do solo construído, com destaque para a Urochloa brizantha que proporcionou a menor densidade do solo e um dos maiores valores de macroporosidade. As poáceas proporcionaram uma melhoria na estruturação do solo construído, principalmente a partir dos 41 meses de condução do experimento, quando houve um incremento nos valores de DMP, principalmente na camada de 0,00-0,10m. Os teores de carbono orgânico foram incrementados ao longo do tempo, entretanto, isso não se refletiu em aumento do DMP aos 78 meses

In surface coal mining the vegetation is completely suppressed and layers of soil and rocks that cover the coal seams are removed, causing drastic changes in the original soil profile. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different species of grasses in the recovery of a constructed soil structure as part of the strategy of reclamation for coal mining. The treatments were: T1 - Hemarthria altissima, T2 - Paspalum notatum, T3 - Cynodon dactilon, T4 - Urochloa brizantha. As a control, a bare constructed soil was used, called T5. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in 0.00-0.10m and 0.10-0.20m layers for the determination of the percentage of macroaggregates and microaggregates, mean weight diameter, organic carbon, bulk density and macroporosity. The results were evaluated at 05, 41 and 78 months after the establishment of the experiment. After 78 months of conducting the experiment, positive action of the four plant species in the reclamation of soil aggregation was observed, especially for Urochloa brizantha that showed the lowest bulk density and the highest values of macroporosity. The species provided a structural improvement in the constructed soil, mainly after 41 months of conducting the experiment when there was an increase in the values of MWD, mainly in the 0.00 to 0.1 m layer. The organic carbon contents were increased over time, however, did not result in increased of MWD at 78 months

Surface coal mining causes an intense topographic and hydrologic change in the area with suppression of local vegetation, degrading the environment. One main problem presented by the rehabilitated soil refers to physical disruption of the soil, which delays the regrowth of plant species in the mining area. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of four grass species in the retrieval of the rehabilitated soil's physical properties at a recovered coal mine area in Candiota, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. With the data an ANOVA was performed and treatments means were compared using Tukey test (p ≤0.05). The treatments were: T1-Hemarthria altissima; T2-Paspalum notatum; T3-Cynodon dactylon; T4-Urochloa brizantha; a rehabilitated soil without vegetation cover was used as control. Preserved soil samples after 78 months were collected in the 0.00-0.10 m and 0.10-0.20 m layers to determine bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity and available water capacity. The process of rehabilitation of coal mined areas was slow due to the high degree of degradation that occurs during the extraction of coal and the topographic recovery of the area, adversely affecting the structural quality of the soils. The assessed grasses showed potential to reclaim these areas, since improvements were observed in the values of the soil attributes over time, especially in the 0.00-0.10 m layer. After 78 months of evaluation, U. brizantha showed the higher potential to recover the physical properties of the compacted rehabilitated mine soils.

La minería del carbón en superficie provoca un intenso cambio topográfico e hidrológico en la zona por la supresión de la vegetación local, degradando el ambiente. Un problema principal presentado por el suelo rehabilitado es la perturbación física del suelo, lo que retrasa el rebrote de las especies vegetales en el área minera. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia de cuatro especies de gramíneas en la recuperación de las propiedades físicas del suelo en un área minera de carbón rehabilitada en Candiota, Rio Grande do Sul, sur de Brasil. Con los datos se realizó un ANDEVA y las medias de los tratamientos se compararon con la prueba de Tukey (p≤ 0.05). Los tratamientos fueron: T1-Hemarthria altissima; T2- Paspalum notatum; T3-Cynodon dactylon; T4-Urochloa brizantha; un suelo rehabilitado sin cubierta vegetal se usó como testigo. Muestras de suelo protegido se recolectaron después de 78 meses en capas de 0.00-0.10 m and 0.10-0.20 m para determinar densidad aparente, porosidad total, macroporosidad, microporosidad y capacidad de agua disponible. El proceso de rehabilitación de las zonas de minas de carbón fue lento debido al grado alto de degradación producido durante la extracción de carbón y la recuperación topográfica de la zona, lo que afecta negativamente la calidad estructural de los suelos. Las gramíneas evaluadas mostraron potencial para recuperar estas áreas, ya que se observaron mejoras en los valores de los atributos del suelo en el tiempo, especialmente en la capa de 0.00 a 0.10 m. Después de 78 meses de evaluación, U. brizantha mostró el potencial mayor para recuperar las propiedades físicas de los suelos rehabilitados de las minas.

A construção do solo após a mineração de carvão a céu aberto envolve intenso tráfego de máquinas durante a recomposição topográfica da área, acarretando a compactação das suas camadas repostas, o que gera problemas de infiltração e redistribuição da água ao longo do novo perfil, facilita a erosão hídrica e, consequentemente, dificulta a revegetação do solo construído. O uso de plantas que auxiliam no processo de descompactação do solo constitui-se em importante estratégia na recuperação da qualidade estrutural do solo. Este trabalho analisou a influência de diferentes gramíneas perenes na recuperação da agregação de um solo construído na área de mineração de carvão da Companhia Riograndense de Mineração, localizado em Candiota, RS, implantadas em setembro/outubro de 2007. Os tratamentos estudados foram: T1 - Cynodon dactylon cv vaquero; T2 - Urochloa brizantha; T3 - Panicum maximun; T4 - Urochloa humidicola; T5 - Hemarthria altissima; e T6 - Cynodon dactylon cv tifton 85. Como testemunha, foi utilizada uma área com solo construído sem plantas de cobertura, adjacente à área experimental, denominado T7; e, como referência, uma área com solo natural à frente da mineração, denominada T8. Amostras de solo não preservadas e preservadas foram coletadas em outubro/2009, nas camadas de 0,00-0,05 e 0,10-0,15 m, determinando-se porcentagem de macro e microagregados, diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados (DMP), teor de matéria orgânica, densidade do solo, macro e microporosidade. Os menores valores de macroagregados e do DMP da camada de 0,00-0,05 m do solo construído em relação à camada subsuperficial resultaram do alto grau de compactação dessa, ocasionada pelo tráfego de máquinas pesadas sobre o material argiloso. Após 24 meses de condução do experimento, todos os tratamentos apresentaram melhorias na agregação do solo, quando comparados ao solo construído sem plantas de cobertura (testemunha), principalmente na camada de 0,00-0,05 m, com destaque para as duas espécies de Urochloa (T2 e T4) e a Hermathria altissima (T5). No entanto, as grandes diferenças entre os tratamentos com gramíneas e o solo natural (referência) sugeriram um tempo muito longo para a recuperação das condições estruturais do solo anteriores à mineração.

The construction of a soil after surface coal mining involves heavy machinery traffic during the topographic regeneration of the area, resulting in compaction of the relocated soil layers. This leads to problems with water infiltration and redistribution along the new profile, causing water erosion and consequently hampering the revegetation of the reconstructed soil. The planting of species useful in the process of soil decompaction is a promising strategy for the recovery of the soil structural quality. This study investigated the influence of different perennial grasses on the recovery of reconstructed soil aggregation in a coal mining area of the Companhia Riograndense de Mineração, located in Candiota-RS, which were planted in September/October 2007. The treatments consisted of planting: T1- Cynodon dactylon cv vaquero; T2 - Urochloa brizantha; T3 - Panicum maximun; T4 - Urochloa humidicola; T5 - Hemarthria altissima; T6 - Cynodon dactylon cv tifton 85. Bare reconstructed soil, adjacent to the experimental area, was used as control treatment (T7) and natural soil adjacent to the mining area covered with native vegetation was used as reference area (T8). Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in October/2009 (layers 0.00-0.05 and 0.10-0.15 m) to determine the percentage of macro- and microaggregates, mean weight diameter (MWD) of aggregates, organic matter content, bulk density, and macro- and microporosity. The lower values of macroaggregates and MWD in the surface than in the subsurface layer of the reconstructed soil resulted from the high degree of compaction caused by the traffic of heavy machinery on the clay material. After 24 months, all experimental grass treatments showed improvements in soil aggregation compared to the bare reconstructed soil (control), mainly in the 0.00-0.05 m layer, particularly in the two Urochloa treatments (T2 and T4) and Hemarthria altissima (T5). However, the great differences between the treatments with grasses and natural soil (reference) indicate that the recovery of the pre-mining soil structure could take decades.
